"So yeah, I got told if Trav was playing that I was going to be batting 4. I'll do whatever the team wants. I've got a pretty good record at three, so I was a bit shocked in a way, but I'll do what I need to for the team."

Cummins, speaking at the press conference on eve of New Zealand match, however said that Smith didn't take much convincing to bat at number four.

"I think he said himself, do whatever is best for the team," Cummins said. "And Trav's been amazing [at the top of the order] over the last 12 months. Mitch Marsh at the top has been amazing. Davey Warner's obviously a superstar up there.

"We think that's the best way to set up the team and we're really excited with how the batting line-up looks like. No, it's been fine. We all do some roles that maybe is not your preference but it's what's best for the team so it's fine."

Australia skipper Pat Cummins gave a 'chuckling' reply when asked what he thought about arch-rival England's fourth loss in five games in ODI World Cup 2023. Defending champions England are second from bottom on the points table after losing against New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. As per the current scenario, the 2019 ODI World Cup winners are unlikely to make it to the semifinals.

Asked what is his reaction on England's loss, Pat Cummins said with a smile in his face: "Yeah, got them in a couple of games' time. So, yeah, it is sad to see."

He made the remarks during a media interaction ahead of the match against New Zealand.

"As I said leading up today, we could control it from there, but it certainly hasn't done our net run-rate any help at all and, depending on others," said Mott to Sky Sports after the loss against Sri Lanka.

Retired England Test veteran Stuart Broad recalled an incident from the second Ashes Test in Lord’s this summer, wherein he got involved in an ‘ugly verbal spat’ with Australia captain Pat Cummins over the controversial Jonny Bairstow run out on day five. Detailing everyone on how he reacted to Australia’s tactics of getting rid of well-settled Bairstow, Broad admitted saying to Cummins on his face, ‘You’re an absolute disgrace, which he later regretted.

As both teams were approaching the end of the first session on day five, Aussie keeper Alex Carey affected a run out from behind the stumps after Bairstow ducked a bouncer and left his crease to join his partner in the middle as it was the last ball of the over. Carey, cheekily, threw the ball towards the stumps, catching Bairstow out of his crease and was declared run out after multiple replays.

Speaking about the instance on the Up Front podcast lately, Broad revealed the whole scenario and what words were exchanged.

“As I’m walking out to bat at Lord’s and there’s boos going at the Aussies, the captain Pat Cummins is coming on to bowl, so he’s walking towards me at the end of his mark,” Broad said on the Up Front podcast.

“And I just looked at him and said, ‘You’re an absolute disgrace’.

“He said, ‘Oh yeah, you’re hardly an upkeep of the spirit of cricket’.

Cummins’ remarks referred to the instance from the 2013 Ashes, where Broad edged the ball to the first slip off Ashton Agar but decided against walking away. The umpire, Aleem Dar, also adjudged that not out, while replays showed Broad edged one.

That instance further put Broad in a bad light as he faced backlash from the Aussie crowd during the Ashes Down Under the same year, with Australia winning 5-0.

“So that upset me a bit,” Broad replied to that.

“Then the next 10 minutes became me being very facetious and shouting in every time, which I had huge regrets about that night,” he said.

“I was hugely embarrassed about it, but I had no real control over what I was doing,” Broad added.

Following that instance ahead of lunch on day five, Australian players were booed on their way to the dressing room, and even upon entering the Long Room, several MCC members launched a verbal attack on the players, mainly Usman Khawaja and David Warner.&nbsp;

It led to tensions all around, with players complaining about being threatened and abused during the course.&nbsp;

Upon receiving a written complaint from Cricket Australia, MCC launched an independent investigation into the matter, suspending and banning three members who were found guilty.

Although Australia won the second Test, they failed to win the Ashes, as England came back winning two out of three remaining Tests.

After Maxwell’s record-breaking 40-ball hundred, Australia bowled out the Netherlands on 90 to win by 309 runs. Australia now have three wins from five matches and look solid for a place in the semifinals before taking on arch-rivals New Zealand on Saturday.

“They (New Zealand) are a really good side. Big game in Dharamsala. It's the World Cup and we are in a good space, can't wait to get there. (Areas to improve) I don't think we have totally nailed the 50 overs with the bat yet,” Cummins added on the upcoming match against New Zealand.

Cummins’ side will next take on New Zealand on Saturday in Dharamshala before facing England in Ahmedabad. Australian captain Pat Cummins was a relieved man after his side registered its first win in the World Cup by beating Sri Lanka at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday (Oct 16). Fresh off two back-to-back losses, the five-time World Cup champions had a point to prove and according to Cummins, his players just did that.&nbsp;

After the win, Cummins said his team was not bothered by the outside noise, even after the slow start to the World Cup campaign.

"There were a lot of people watching heading into the World Cup which is great but we're not bothered by outside noise. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up," said Cummins during the post-match chat.&nbsp;

Quizzed about what his team did differently to secure the win, Cummins said:&nbsp;&nbsp;"Probably nothing that was said. It was more on the back of two losses, our group's got pretty high standards so everyone wanted to come out."&nbsp;

"I thought we bowled decently but we were staring down the barrel at 1/130 or something like that. But the bowlers stuck to their task and to bowl them out for 209 was great. Hard to say but I think par was probably 300."

Losing captain&nbsp;Kusal Mendis attributed the loss to playing too many dot deliveries in the middle overs, which contributed to the eventual implosion.&nbsp;

"290-300 I think would have been a good total on this pitch.&nbsp;More dot balls and not rotating strike enough. It was still a good wicket. Unfortunately, we played too many risky shots," said Mendis.&nbsp;

Despite three losses, Mendis showed faith in the batting unit, adding that the bowlers were getting better as well.&nbsp;

"Last two games we have batted really well. Today, we struggled a little bit. Hopefully, in the next match, we get momentum. I think we can do better than today - I have confidence in our batting unit.&nbsp;The bowling unit is getting better and I know we'll do better in the next matches."

Sri Lanka will now face the Netherlands at the same venue in three days' time while Australia will travel to Bengaluru to square up against Pakistan.&nbsp;

Chasing 312, Australia folded out for 177 and skipper Pat Cummins acknowledged that they have 'got to try and find a way in all conditions.'

"I think if we want to be challenging, you [have] got to try and find a way in all conditions, and that's for the bowlers try and take wickets and for the batters try and score runs," Cummins told the broadcaster after the loss.

"I wouldn't say it's one thing [where Australia went wrong]," he said. "Maybe they [South Africa] got a few more than we would have liked. And obviously 177 is off the mark as well. So yeah, it's a few things we need to tidy up."

There were, however, a couple of contentious DRS calls (Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis) during the Australian innings which didn't go their way but the batters still didn't look comfortable at all.

India will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Hardik Pandya, hence, KL Rahul will take charge of the national side for the first two games. The home side will rely on Mohammed Siraj, their in-form pacer who wreaked havoc in the Asia Cup final with 6 for 21, versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co.

Ahead of the Mohali ODI, Australian skipper Cummins was asked whether the Men in Yellow have a special plan to tackle in-form Siraj. To this, the 30-year-old had an epic one-word reply. Cummins replied with a firm "No"&nbsp;in the pre-match press conference on Thursday (September 21). Australia have faced a lot of Siraj in the recent past -- the last two editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, three ODIs and WTC final early this year -- and, hence, won't be too stressed while facing him once again. However, his fine form will keep them on their toes especially during the powerplays.

"We want to strike the balance between getting used to these conditions, hopefully winning some games, but we also don't want to get to that first game [of the World Cup] and already be cooked," Cummins said. "No doubt we'll be trying a few different combinations, a few different players will get a chance but ideally we'd like to structure up pretty closely to how we'll play in the World Cup."

While Australia have been using Marcus Stoinis as a new-ball bowler, Cameroon Green and Sean Abbott are the other options. Both Green and Abbott did take part in the recently-conclude South Africa ODI series and are available again following a bit of&nbsp;fitness issues.

"You need five bowlers, so the more allrounders you have you can really bolster your batting," Cummins said. "It gives us flexibility to pick four genuine bowlers or maybe three bowlers and bat an allrounder at No. 8. Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell set to miss first ODI against India, confirms Australia skipper Pat Cummins

Australia has added Michael Neser to the squad for the remainder of South Africa ODIs to bolster the attack as star quicks continue to recover ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023. Neser, 33, has played only two ODIs before, in 2018 against England, and will join the Aussie squad in Potchefstroom before the third One-Dayer.

Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who made himself available in the absence of seasoned campaigner Mitchell Starc, is said to have picked up a minor hamstring injury. Though he is likely out of contention for this series, Spencer will travel with the squad to India for the three ODIs.

Speaking on the call to bring in the experienced Neser for this series, selector Tony Dodemaide said, "[He] is an experienced all-format cricketer who will provide us with an extra fast bowling option should that be required for the remainder of the tour."

Aussie quick Pat Cummins said he is a bowler first in the ODI team and then the captain as former five-time champions gear up for the 2023 World Cup in India later this year. Cummins added that in the lead-up to the mega event he expects leadership responsibilities to be shared among seniors as selectors don’t want to risk his workload management.

With Cummins remaining at the helm of things since the start of English summer, including the World Test Championship Final against India and the ongoing Ashes, he is likely to get an extended rest ahead of the World Cup.

Since Australia will travel to South Africa for the white-ball leg starting in late August and then to India for the three One-Dayers, Cummins will not come up for toss in every game, something even chief selector George Bailey also believes.

"In our one-day team, we do feel like we've got some strong leaders, some really experienced members of the team, and some developing leaders. So, regardless of Pat being there, I think we are moving away from this concept of a captain taking over and their leadership being all-encompassing,” Bailey said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
