Australia skipper Pat Cummins has opened up on his ODI captaincy role as the five-time ODI World Cup champions get ready for the semifinal clash against South Africa on Thursday (Nov 15). Cummins who took over the captaincy from Aaron Finch last year has been in impeccable form for the nation. Now on a seven-match unbeaten run in the tournament, Cummins has commented on his captaincy stance while also leaving the gates open for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season before the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.

Cummins on captaincy role

"Potentially, yeah. We'll chat about it," Cummins said during an interaction with the reporters during the practice session on Monday evening.

"We've been pretty open, me and Andrew and George around different times in the year you're going to have different priorities," said Cummins.

"This is a bit of a one-off year where there's three or four big off-season events. After here the focus shifts back to Test cricket for a fair while. Probably like we've done in the past, at times white-ball cricket is going to have to shift (as a priority) so we fully focus on Test cricket."

The Aussie pacer has the age factor on his side and could be available for the 2027 showpiece in Africa if injuries and workload management are worked out. However, captaincy pressure could be a decisive factor about whether he leads the side in 2027 or not while several players like David Warner, Steven Smith, and others have already conceded this will be their last ODI World Cup.

IPL return for Cummins?

The 30-year-old also spoke on the IPL 2024 as he flagged his intentions to return to the mega-rich league before the T20 World Cup next year. IPL 2024 auctions will take place on Tuesday (December 19) in Dubai as the Aussie pacer targets a return before the World Cup.

Pat Cummins intends to stay ODI skipper post ODI World Cup for Aussies, open to IPL return as well

Australia has come to the party, and what good time they chose. After India and South Africa – the top two sides in this tournament, Australia finally peaked in this World Cup 2023, beating Bangladesh by eight wickets in their last league match in Pune. With the Oz scheduled to face the Proteas in the second semi-final on Thursday (Nov 16), captain Pat Cummins feels the team is clicking together for good.

Despite their world-class chase against Afghanistan the other night in Mumbai, where Maxwell starred with the bat, hitting his maiden ODI double ton, the Aussies made the chase against Bangladesh on Saturday look like backyard training.

Mitchell Marsh hit his highest ODI score (177*) while returning Steve Smith hit an unbeaten 63 off 64 balls as Australia chased 306 inside the 45th over. Marsh, who hit his second hundred of this campaign, having scored on his birthday against Pakistan earlier, smashed nine sixes and 17 fours.

With Marsh hitting the right notes at the right time for Australia and the Aussies having a good five days to prepare before their scheduled semis clash against South Africa, they will bring their A-game on the D-day. Cummins looked pleased with his team’s overall performance in this lead-up to the semis and this match, particularly.
“It was great. Great win leading to the semis, chasing a good total. We were not at our sharpest in the first innings. It was a really good wicket. We brought it back to a total that we could chase, not too upset with it,” Cummins said after his team’s win in their last league match.

Considering Australia has ample time to pick their best XI against Proteas, Cummins feels this is a good headache to have.

“Good problems to have,” he said. “All 15 have played this tournament now and I feel we can pick any one of them.”

Marsh was outstanding

Speaking on Marsh’s heroic knock against Bangladesh, Cummins lauded it by calling it outstanding.

“Outstanding (on Marsh's innings). I thought it was impressive the way he finished off the innings. The tempo that he played at was sustainable, and he is a scary prospect to have in the next week. Seven games in a row, even when we were not at our best in some of those games, we came away with a win. Chasing 300-plus was something we did not do earlier. Feels like everything is clicking together,” the Aussie skipper added.

World Cup 2023 - Feels like everything is clicking together: Cummins on Australia’s big win over Bangladesh

Glenn Maxwell played a stupendous knock, 201 not out off 128 balls, as Australia beat Afghanistan by three wickets in the ODI World Cup in pursuit of 292 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. In match 39, Afghanistan rode on Ibrahim Zadran's 129 not out to post 291 for 5 and had the Aussies reeling at 91 for 7 before an unbroken 202-run eighth-wicket stand between Maxwell and captain Pat Cummins (12*) took the five-time winners to a stunning win.

Maxwell was struggling with severe cramps during his entire knock, but the 35-year-old didn't give up and targetted his bowlers and cleared the ropes at regular intervals to single-handedly take the Aussies to the semi-finals. Towards the end of the game, he was on the ground due to cramps, however, the veteran refused to go back and completed the job for his side. After the encounter, an elated Cummins opined on Maxwell's availability going forward.

'I'm sure he'll be fine'

Cummins said, "Yeah, I'm sure he'll be fine. He was cramping but I think you saw out there how much he loves playing for Australia and do anything to play. So, I'm sure it'll be fine. He is happy. Just cramp. I think that's the main thing. I think his back was cramping pretty early on. Felt tight and then just hamstrings, calves. For one over he said his toe was gone."

"So, I'm sure it will be fine, plenty of hydration, he'll be in the ice bath I'm sure, but I'm sure you'll be very satisfied and it will be okay," he added.

After his berserk knock, Maxwell stated at the post-match ceremony, "It was hot while fielding today, I haven't done a lot of exercise in the heat, it got a hold on me today. I wanted to stay back and get some movement (on my legs). Not too much (when asked about plans at 92/7), just stick to the batting plans as much as possible, for me, still be positive, still look to play my shots, that LBW, it was going just above (the stumps), probably that made me be more proactive. A hint of swing and nip (off the surface), as it happens here under lights, they bowled beautifully to exploit that. It would have been nice if it was a chanceless knock, but I had my chances, to make the most of it tonight was something I can be proud of. Amazing, after the first two games, people were quick to write us off. The belief was always there (as a team), after today, it would have gone a bit higher."

ODI WC: Australia captain Pat Cummins on Glenn Maxwell's availability after freak knock vs Afghanistan

Take a bow, Glenn Maxwell!

Cricket has never seen anything like that before.

The cricket world got blessed with, hands down, the greatest knock in white-ball history!

The ‘Big Show’ hammered the Afghanistan bowlers on one leg to complete the highest successful run-chase (292) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He also became the first-ever batter to notch up a double hundred (201* off 128) while chasing in ODI cricket.

From 91 for seven to 293 for seven inside the 47th over, Pat Cummins and Maxwell stitched a 200-plus stand for the eighth wicket, helping Australia revive from a dire situation to end up on the winning side.

Bowling first, Australia conceded 291 runs, with Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran hitting his maiden World Cup hundred (129* off 143).

The chase didn’t start the way Australia wanted, as they lost wickets in clusters inside the first Powerplay. With seamers and spinners tearing into the Aussie middle order, they got reduced to 91 for seven.

What unfolded next shocked the cricket world.

Cummins and Maxwell took the onus on themselves and chased down the gigantic target, with Maxwell shining throughout. The right-handed batter smashed 21 fours and 10 massive sixes to help Australia complete perhaps the most improbable chase in ODI history.

Take a bow, Glenn Maxwell! Cricket has never seen anything like that before. The cricket world got blessed with, hands down, the greatest knock in white-ball history!

ALSO READ: World Cup 2023: Maxwell's 'one leg' heroics drag Australia to a stunning victory against Afghanistan Bowling first, Australia conceded 291 runs, with Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran hitting his maiden World Cup hundred (129* off 143). Here is how X reacted to this - Maxwell's place in history just got guaranteed. Lady luck smiles on Glenn Maxwell as 'Big Show' pulls off greatest World Cup run-chase, here's how X reacted

Australia opener Travis Head might be available for the next ODI World Cup 2023 game against New Zealand on October 28. With Head's return, Steve Smith could go down at number four to which the batter expressed shock. Skipper Pat Cummins, however, is confident of Smith doing what's best for the team.

"It's a different sort of mindset I think, when you come in at 3 to 4," Smith had said after Australia's last match when told he'll be batting at number four once Head returns. "So yeah, I got told if Trav was playing that I was going to be batting 4. I'll do whatever the team wants. I've got a pretty good record at three, so I was a bit shocked in a way, but I'll do what I need to for the team."

Cummins, speaking at the press conference on eve of New Zealand match, however said that Smith didn't take much convincing to bat at number four.

ODI World Cup 2023: Australia skipper Cummins confident of SHOCKED Smith batting at four as Head returns

Australia skipper Pat Cummins gave a 'chuckling' reply when asked what he thought about arch-rival England's fourth loss in five games in ODI World Cup 2023. Defending champions England are second from bottom on the points table after losing against New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. As per the current scenario, the 2019 ODI World Cup winners are unlikely to make it to the semifinals.

Asked what is his reaction on England's loss, Pat Cummins said with a smile in his face: "Yeah, got them in a couple of games' time. So, yeah, it is sad to see."

He made the remarks during a media interaction ahead of the match against New Zealand.

While England face India on October 29 in the north Indian city of Lucknow ahead of the game against the Aussies, Pat Cummins-led Kangaroos face 2019 runners-up New Zealand in a crucial game on October 28 in Dharamsala before taking on England.

Australia also had a horrible start of their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign as they lost first two games against India and South Africa.

The five-time champions, however, bounced back in emphatic style by beating Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Netherlands in their next three games. Australia currently sit fourth on the points table with six points in five games. Apart from the Kiwis and England, their last two league games are against Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

England coach Matthew Mott, on the other hand, has accepted that the team is in a 'bit of trouble' and a lot has to go mathematically right for them in order to make it to the semis.

"As I said leading up today, we could control it from there, but it certainly hasn't done our net run-rate any help at all and, depending on others," said Mott to Sky Sports after the loss against Sri Lanka.

So, yeah, it is sad to see." He made the remarks during a media interaction ahead of the match against New Zealand. Have a look at the reaction below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Australia are due to face England in their seventh game of the tournament on November 4 in the west Indian city of Ahmedabad. ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH | 'Sad to see,' says Australia skipper Pat Cummins with smile on England's campaign

Retired England Test veteran Stuart Broad recalled an incident from the second Ashes Test in Lord’s this summer, wherein he got involved in an ‘ugly verbal spat’ with Australia captain Pat Cummins over the controversial Jonny Bairstow run out on day five. Detailing everyone on how he reacted to Australia’s tactics of getting rid of well-settled Bairstow, Broad admitted saying to Cummins on his face, ‘You’re an absolute disgrace, which he later regretted.

As both teams were approaching the end of the first session on day five, Aussie keeper Alex Carey affected a run out from behind the stumps after Bairstow ducked a bouncer and left his crease to join his partner in the middle as it was the last ball of the over. Carey, cheekily, threw the ball towards the stumps, catching Bairstow out of his crease and was declared run out after multiple replays.

Speaking about the instance on the Up Front podcast lately, Broad revealed the whole scenario and what words were exchanged.

“As I’m walking out to bat at Lord’s and there’s boos going at the Aussies, the captain Pat Cummins is coming on to bowl, so he’s walking towards me at the end of his mark,” Broad said on the Up Front podcast.

ODI World Cup 2023: Pat Cummins pleased with team's overall show, says 'we played the style we liked to'

Match 24 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition will see five-time winners Australia lock horns with the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 25). While the Dutch are coming to this game on the back of a five-wicket loss to Sri Lanka, Australia have revamped with two back-to-back wins and will aim for their third.

Talking about Pat Cummins-led Men in Yellow, the Aussies had an indifferent start to the ten-team tournament with two successive losses. However, they have rejuvenated in style with two consecutive wins and will now be beaming in confidence. The Aussies will take the Netherlands lightly at their own peril given the fact that they defeated South Africa by 38 runs (DLS method) just last week. Can the Dutch pull off their biggest win by beating the most successful side in ODI World Cup history? Only time will tell...

Pitch conditions and result prediction: The pitch is expected to be conducive for the batters. Thus, expect a high scorer, especially if the Aussies bat first. The surface can remain the same with some dew kicking in later. Thus, chasing is certainly an option but scoreboard pressure can play a part. Despite some big upsets already happening in the tournament, expect Australia to beat the Dutch on Wednesday.

World Cup 2023, Australia vs Netherlands: Match preview and result prediction

Australia skipper Pat Cummins is wary of Pakistan’s threat ahead of their key clash in the ODI World Cup as the two nations meet on Friday (Oct 20) in Bengaluru. The contest at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in the south Indian city could be the launching pad for both sides as they gear up for a heated race for the semifinal. Australia beat Sri Lanka on Monday while Pakistan lost to India on Saturday to end their two-matching winning run.

Cummins wary of threat

"They're a side that always seems to be right up there. Pretty well structured, I think, across, you know, some really good quick bowlers who can do some damage, some spin bowlers that can bowl 20 of their overs plus. And then they've got, you know, I think Rizwan's the leading run-scorer, Babar Azam's always good, a couple of other batters that have scored a lot in ODIs lately. So, they're a really strong side pretty much in all facets," Cummins said while speaking in the pre-match press conference.

The win for Australia on Monday ended their worst run in the ODI World Cup history having lost four matches in a row. They had lost to India and South Africa in the current edition while also failing to win their last two matches in the 2019 campaign.

Pakistan on the flip side will look to bounce back from their defeat by India, having won their opening two matches against Netherlands and Sri Lanka. Despite chasing a record total against Sri Lanka, they were no match to the Indian team and were bowled out for 191 on Saturday. They will look to Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as key players to help the side on the batting side. Abdullah Shafique has also showcased his talent for the national side, having scored a ton on his World Cup debut.

ODI World Cup 2023: Australia skipper Pat Cummins wary of potential Pak threat ahead of key clash in Bengaluru

Australia spinner Adam Zampa has revealed that there is no captaincy pressure on Pat Cummins after the Men in Yellow finally got off the mark in the CWC 2023 edition with a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Monday (Oct 16) in Lucknow. In match 14, Cummins-led Australia dismissed the Lankans for 209 in 43.3 overs and chased down the score in 35.2 overs with five wickets to spare.

Zampa, who returned with 4 for 47 and was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match, stated that the Aussie players are backing each other 100 per cent and there is 'no pressure on Pat'.

Zampa stated in the post-match press conference, "We all back each other 100% in this team, so I don't really know what's been said or what people are reading, but the only thing that I saw come on the WhatsApp group was same 11 as last game. So yeah, there's no pressure on Pat there."

After the five-time winners Australia lost their opening two games, versus India and South Africa, there were talks of Cummins' inexperience as an ODI captain. However, the team management and players are backing him fully in the ongoing competition.

On Australia's poor start, Zampa admitted, "After the first two games there's definitely a flat feeling in the change rooms. We all know that I think you could probably go from 1 to 11 and say we all could do our roles a little bit better, particularly those first two games."

He added, "It's a World Cup, so get on a roll. Obviously, a really big game against Pakistan in Bangalore, and if we can put it all together and play a good game there, you go 2 and 2 and the feeling's much better.”

Australia spinner Adam Zampa has revealed that there is no captaincy pressure on Pat Cummins after the Men in Yellow finally got off the mark in the CWC 2023 edition with a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Monday (Oct 16) in Lucknow.

So yeah, there's no pressure on Pat there." After the five-time winners Australia lost their opening two games, versus India and South Africa, there were talks of Cummins' inexperience as an ODI captain. However, the team management and players are backing him fully in the ongoing competition. Also read: Rohit Sharma turned his career around after 2011 ODI World Cup omission, says Amol Mazumdar On Australia's poor start, Zampa admitted, "After the first two games there's definitely a flat feeling in the change rooms. We all know that I think you could probably go from 1 to 11 and say we all could do our roles a little bit better, particularly those first two games." He added, "It's a World Cup, so get on a roll. Obviously, a really big game against Pakistan in Bangalore, and if we can put it all together and play a good game there, you go 2 and 2 and the feeling's much better.” Australia will feel much relieved after getting their first points in the ten-team tournament. They will now shift their focus on facing Pakistan at the M. Chinnaswammy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday (Oct 20). ODI World Cup: Pat Cummins is under no captaincy pressure, reveals Adam Zampa after Australia beat Sri Lanka

Australian captain Pat Cummins was a relieved man after his side registered its first win in the World Cup by beating Sri Lanka at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday (Oct 16). Fresh off two back-to-back losses, the five-time World Cup champions had a point to prove and according to Cummins, his players just did that.

After the win, Cummins said his team was not bothered by the outside noise, even after the slow start to the World Cup campaign.

"There were a lot of people watching heading into the World Cup which is great but we're not bothered by outside noise. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up," said Cummins during the post-match chat.

Quizzed about what his team did differently to secure the win, Cummins said: "Probably nothing that was said. It was more on the back of two losses, our group's got pretty high standards so everyone wanted to come out."

"I thought we bowled decently but we were staring down the barrel at 1/130 or something like that. But the bowlers stuck to their task and to bowl them out for 209 was great. Hard to say but I think par was probably 300."

290-300 would've been par

Losing captain Kusal Mendis attributed the loss to playing too many dot deliveries in the middle overs, which contributed to the eventual implosion.

"290-300 I think would have been a good total on this pitch. More dot balls and not rotating strike enough. It was still a good wicket. Unfortunately, we played too many risky shots," said Mendis.

Despite three losses, Mendis showed faith in the batting unit, adding that the bowlers were getting better as well.

I think we can do better than today - I have confidence in our batting unit. The bowling unit is getting better and I know we'll do better in the next matches."

World Cup 2023: 'Outside noise doesn't bother us...', Pat Cummins after Australia trounce Sri Lanka

Former Australia batter Matthew Hayden lambasted the Pat Cummins-led team after they lost their second match in a row in the ODI World Cup 2023. Australia, on October 12, lost by 134 runs against South Africa in Lucknow. They had lost their first match of the tournament as well - by seven wickets against India.

Hayden pointed out that 'Australia haven't laid out the vision for this tournament' and 'they are hoping rather than understanding' at this point of time.

"Australia have won this tournament five times and that's an enormous effort and achievement for generations. But right now, there's a great sense of how are Australia going to win a game during this World Cup. It's had a very slow start, tad selection changes already and that for me just means that the vision or the map of how Australia are going about this tournament has not been really laid out," said Hayden.

Hayden also said that it's really on Pat Cummins to change things around for Australia in the World Cup at this point of time.

"Pat cane be one of those Australian captains (World Cup winners) but at this stage it is really on him," he said.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'We're trying,' says Australia skipper Pat Cummins after horror loss against South Africa

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has opened up on his team’s tactics as they prepare for the crunch clash against India in the ODI World Cup on Sunday (Oct 8) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Cummins will look to put behind the recent disappointments against India while insisting his team has plans to counter the opposition. India are expected to play with three spinners which could be a big headache for Australia.

Cummins commits to plan vs India

“It's no doubt helpful playing a lot here, not only for Australia but IPL. I've probably played more white-ball cricket in India than I have in Australia over the last 10 years, so it's conditions we know really well. And I think the positive thing is that we've played some really good one-day cricket against India over here over the last few years so we can draw back on that,” said Cummins.

India skipper Rohit Sharma on the eve of the clash in Chennai spoke on the team’s plan where he hinted at making use of three spinners. If this is the case, the Men in Blue could make use of Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep, and Ravindra Jadeja in the same Playing XI.

“Yeah, they're a good bowling lineup, especially here in home conditions. So, they're going to be challenging. The good thing is we've played them a lot. So, our batters will have their plans. And again, we've had success against them a few times. They've bowled well against us a few times as well,” Cummins added.

India and Australia recently squared off in a three-match ODI series, where the home side emerged victorious 2-1. India are expected to be without Shubman Gill who is suffering from dengue and has not trained with the side. His availability remains a big issue for Team India despite having notable players as back-up. It is understood, that if Gill is not available, Ishan Kishan will open with skipper Rohit while there will be room for either Suryakumar Yadav or Shreyas Iyer in the Playing XI.

IND vs AUS 1st ODI: Check date, time, venue, squads and live streaming details for India vs Australia match

India will take on Australia in the series opener of the three ODIs on Friday (September 22) at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. India will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Hardik Pandya, hence, KL Rahul will take charge of the national side for the first two games. The home side will rely on Mohammed Siraj, their in-form pacer who wreaked havoc in the Asia Cup final with 6 for 21, versus Pat Cummins & Co.

Ahead of the Mohali ODI, Australian skipper Cummins was asked whether the Men in Yellow have a special plan to tackle in-form Siraj. To this, the 30-year-old had an epic one-word reply. Cummins replied with a firm "No" in the pre-match press conference on Thursday (September 21). Australia have faced a lot of Siraj in the recent past -- the last two editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, three ODIs and WTC final early this year -- and, hence, won't be too stressed while facing him once again. However, his fine form will keep them on their toes especially during the powerplays.

Speaking of Siraj, he ended with 10 wickets in Asia Cup 2023, second overall (most by an Indian), and will look to replicate his splendid form in the Australia series, which will be followed by CWC 2023 (starting on October 05).

For the visitors, they have a lot of regulars coming back -- from injury concerns -- during the forthcoming ODIs versus Team India. Cummins has not played an ODI since November 2022 whereas Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are also returning after injury layoffs. They, however, have a well-oiled unit to challenge Rohit, Virat Kohli-less India in the first two ODIs.

Australia have already announced that they will be without pacer Starc and all-rounder Maxwell for the series opener in Mohali.

Both India and Australia will meet in their CWC 2023 openers in Chennai on October 08 after the three ODIs. The World Cup kicks off on October 05 in Ahmedabad with defending champions England taking on New Zealand.

Ind vs Aus: Cummins gives epic one-word reply when asked if visitors have special plan to tackle Siraj

Australia are aiming to get their senior players some game time in the three-match ODI series against India which starts Friday, September 22 ahead of the ODI World Cup. The Kangaroos, however, would be without pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for the series opener. Skipper Pat Cummins, however, is hopeful that the duo is available for the later games of the series.

Notably, Starc is coming back from a groin injury while Maxwell is returning from paternity leave and ankle soreness from last year's leg injury. Apart from them, Cummins himself is waiting to get some game time after a wrist injury while Steve Smith too is returning following a wrist issue.

"We want to strike the balance between getting used to these conditions, hopefully winning some games, but we also don't want to get to that first game [of the World Cup] and already be cooked," Cummins said. "No doubt we'll be trying a few different combinations, a few different players will get a chance but ideally we'd like to structure up pretty closely to how we'll play in the World Cup."

"So batters batting in similar positions, ... and as a captain I want to get used to how you use your bowlers over here, it might be a bit different to say South Africa or Australia. Does the second spinner play a part? Hopefully we get some answers over the next few games," he added.

While Australia have been using Marcus Stoinis as a new-ball bowler, Cameroon Green and Sean Abbott are the other options. Both Green and Abbott did take part in the recently-conclude South Africa ODI series and are available again following a bit of fitness issues.

"You need five bowlers, so the more allrounders you have you can really bolster your batting," Cummins said. "It gives us flexibility to pick four genuine bowlers or maybe three bowlers and bat an allrounder at No. 8. Hopefully Maxi comes back later in the series, but the other three guys have been bowling fantastically," added the Aussie skipper.

Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell set to miss first ODI against India, confirms Australia skipper Pat Cummins

Australia has added Michael Neser to the squad for the remainder of South Africa ODIs to bolster the attack as star quicks continue to recover ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023. Neser, 33, has played only two ODIs before, in 2018 against England, and will join the Aussie squad in Potchefstroom before the third One-Dayer.

Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who made himself available in the absence of seasoned campaigner Mitchell Starc, is said to have picked up a minor hamstring injury. Though he is likely out of contention for this series, Spencer will travel with the squad to India for the three ODIs.

Speaking on the call to bring in the experienced Neser for this series, selector Tony Dodemaide said, "[He] is an experienced all-format cricketer who will provide us with an extra fast bowling option should that be required for the remainder of the tour."

While Starc suffered a groin injury that ruled him out of the ODIs, regular skipper Pat Cummins skipped the series as he is recovering from the wrist injury sustained during the Ashes. Besides, the latest injury to all-rounder Cameron Green further worries the travelling side, as Australia hopes to land in India with their injury-free A-squad.

Other than the bowlers, Steve Smith is out with a wrist injury, while Glenn Maxwell, who was due to miss the ODIs to return home for the birth of his child, suffered an ankle injury.

Senior pacer Josh Hazlewood led the pace of the attack in the first game, and with rookie Aaron Hardie in the line-up, Australia can bank on the youngsters to do the job.

Marnus made most of ‘an unlikely’ chance

Marnus Labuschagne, the Test specialist, made the first ODI about himself without even making it into the playing XI in the first place. Coming on as a concussion substitute for injured Green, who got hit on the helmet by Kagiso Rabada, Marnus scored an unbeaten 80, helping his team chase a moderate total of 223.

With this, Marnus pressed his case for an unlikely call-up to the side for his maiden 50-over World Cup.

Australia name 15-man squad for CWC '23, Pat Cummins to lead as Nathan Ellis and two others miss out

Australia’s stand-in skipper Mitchell Marsh has opened up on his new role as he prepares to lead his side in the limited-overs series against South Africa. Marsh, 31, will be the man in charge for the T20I and ODI series in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, who is nursing a wrist injury from the Ashes 2023. According to Marsh, he wishes he could be a good captain and fulfill the task of leading the side in Cummins’ absence.

Marsh on deputising for Cummins

"Hopefully I’m a good captain. If not, I won’t be in the job for very long. That’s okay I’m just looking forward to the opportunity.

"It's certainly been a crazy year. Throw in getting married, it's been a good one.

"We’ll get through South Africa and see how we go. I’m available to captain for as long as the team needs me. We’ll see where it all ends,” Cummins said while speaking on his new role with the team.

Australia will have a few concerns going into the series in South Africa as they will miss Cummins, who is expected to return only during the India series. Australian management though has insisted, Cummins will be in South Africa, promoting an early from the wrist injury.

Injury crisis for Australia

Currently, Australia are without Cummins and Steve Smith for the South Africa series, as the latter too injured his wrist. Smith injured his wrist during the Lord’s Test but still participated in the remainder three Tests. However, with the ODI World Cup coming up in October, the management wanted not to take any risk and avoided Smith for the series.

However, he too is expected to return to the team during the India tour when they face the two-time ODI World champions in a three-match ODI series. Smith is expected to wear a splint to protect his wrist during the India series.

Australia’s South Africa tour starts on Wednesday (Aug 30) with the first T20I taking place at Kingsmead in Durban. The three-match T20I series will then be followed by a five-match ODI series starting on Thursday, September 7 at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

Marsh on deputising for Cummins "Hopefully I’m a good captain. Australia tour of South Africa: Hopefully I’m a good captain - Mitchell Marsh on deputising for Cummins

Aussie quick Pat Cummins said he is a bowler first in the ODI team and then the captain as former five-time champions gear up for the 2023 World Cup in India later this year. Cummins added that in the lead-up to the mega event he expects leadership responsibilities to be shared among seniors as selectors don’t want to risk his workload management.

"I know the selectors have been really clear that I'm a bowler first in the team," Pat said. "So, if we need to manage some of those games leading into the World Cup that takes precedence over the continuity of being captain every single game."

"We'll manage that, but there's a great team around us of players and staff so while I'm the captain and it's a bigger workload it's manageable," the right-arm seamer added.

With Cummins remaining at the helm of things since the start of English summer, including the World Test Championship Final against India and the ongoing Ashes, he is likely to get an extended rest ahead of the World Cup.

Since Australia will travel to South Africa for the white-ball leg starting in late August and then to India for the three One-Dayers, Cummins will not come up for toss in every game, something even chief selector George Bailey also believes.

"In our one-day team, we do feel like we've got some strong leaders, some really experienced members of the team, and some developing leaders. So, regardless of Pat being there, I think we are moving away from this concept of a captain taking over and their leadership being all-encompassing,” Bailey said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Pat was handed over the captaincy in this format after Aaron Finch’s retirement from white-ball cricket in October 2022.

While Pat Cummins was announced as Finch’s successor in the ODIs, Cricket Australia didn’t appoint anyone as their T20I captain, given the Aussies were not scheduled to play any T20Is for quite some time.

With South Africa’s T20Is set to commence now, CA will look to name an interim captain for the shortest format until the World Cup ends – after which they aim to announce one white-ball captain going forward.

Speaking on the same, Cummins said he doesn’t want to rush this passing-the-baton thing as he believes several senior players will put up their hand when needed.

"I certainly don't want to rush anyone out the door," he said. "I think this is about the fourth Ashes series where Jimmy Anderson says it's going to be his last one. You never know. Pat Cummins to not captain Australia in each game ahead of 2023 World Cup to manage workload

Former Australia great Michael Hussey has underlined the importance of Steve Smith and Pat Cummins in the side as they bid to win their sixth ODI World Cup in the coming months. According to Hussey, both the players will have to step up for the Aussies if they are to achieve glory at the World Cup. Australia have won the World Cup five times and their most recent achievement came in 2015 in their own backyard.

But I think for Australia to do really well, they need their big guns to really step up and I guess when you think of that, you think of Steve Smith and Pat Cummins,” Hussey said while speaking to the ICC Review channel.

The Aussies will expect a tough fight during the World Cup as they face competition from England, New Zealand, and India to win their sixth World Cup. Hussey also highlighted the importance of other key players like Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa as they could be vital to the team’s success.

“Marsh has been given a great role, batting in the top three now and he is playing with enormous confidence. So, if he gets his confidence up, he can be a really tough man to stop. Adam Zampa could play a big role for Australia throughout the tournament,” Hussey added.

CWC 2023: They need big guns to step up - Michael Hussey underlines Smith, Cummins' importance for Aussies

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has targeted a return from injury during the India tour in September as his side builds for the ODI World Cup. Cummins, injured on the opening day of the final Ashes Test at the Oval, is unlikely to feature in the South Africa tour, despite him travelling for the ODI leg. According to medical reports, Cummins could be match-fit for the South Africa series, but his realistic target is the India tour before the ODI World Cup warm-up matches.

"It's not too bad. I'll head over to South Africa at the backend of that leg, but probably more those one-dayers ahead of the World Cup. Another few weeks and I'll be right,” Cummins said on Tuesday, August 15 while speaking to Australian media.

Aussie skipper Pat Cummins targets return from injury during India tour, says 'it's not too bad'

Australia could be dealt a major blow before the start of the ODI World Cup as skipper Pat Cummins could miss the upcoming series against India in September. The Aussies will be in India for a three-match ODI Series after the Asia Cup 2023 as they try to set the tone for the upcoming World Cup in October. If Cummins does miss the ODI series, it will be the second time in the year that Australia will do without their star man against India, having also sat out in March due to the death of his mother.

Cummins to miss the ODI series vs India?

According to a report published by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the India series could come early for the Aussie skipper as he nurses a broken wrist. He played the final Ashes Test at the Oval with a broken wrist, where Australia lost to England in the final session. While it was hoped, he could recover for the Pre-World Cup duties; it is now thought that the team management does not want any risk to be taken before the World Cup and could rest Cummins for the series.

"Two sources with knowledge of the matter but not authorised to speak publicly say medical staff have not ruled out a possible fracture," according to the 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

IND vs AUS: Pat Cummins in danger of missing ODI series after suffering broken wrist - Reports

Ben Stokes-led England beat Australia by 49 runs to win the fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023 on Monday (July 31), at The Oval, London. With this, they managed to end the high-voltage series at a 2-2 stalemate. Pat Cummins & Co. had already gained an unassailable 2-1 lead but had a chance to achieve their first Ashes glory in England since 2001 before Chris Woakes (4 for 50) and Moeen Ali (3 for 76) starred for the home side on the final day.

The day started with Aussie openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja resuming at 135 for no loss, in pursuit of 384. Woakes removed Warner for 60, with a jaffa, before trapping Khawaja for 72. Marnus Labuschagne also departed for 13 before Steve Smith (54) - Travis Head (43) combined and played their strokes to take Australia to lunch without any further damage.

Post the lunch break, rain made its presence felt as proceedings were halted for more than a few hours. Once play resumed, it was all about Moeen's spin and Woakes' accuracy. The duo combined to break Head-Smith's 95-run fourth-wicket stand and Australia soon got reduced to 275 for 7 from 264 for 3. Alex Carey (28) had a lot on his plate to keep the Aussies' hopes alive before the visitors bundled out for 334.

Rain comes to England's rescue

The unpredictable English weather saved Australia from a possible hammering in the fourth and penultimate Test in Manchester. While it enabled them to take an unassailable 2-1 lead, this time the weather disrupted their flow twice during their 384-run chase at The Oval. First, it made its presence felt during the second half of Day Four and returned during the final day when Smith-Head had Australia ahead.

Talking about the fifth Test, England were asked to bat first as Australia dismissed them for 283. It could have been anything less than 200 but the visitors weren't at their best in terms of fielding. Cummins & Co. managed to take a slender 12-run lead, courtesy of their lower-order resistance. England, however, rode on rapid fifties from Zak Crawley, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to set up a challenging 384-run target.

The Three Lions were made to sweat hard before Woakes-Moeen and, later, Stuart Broad did the job in what became the latter's final match. The pacer, who ended Ashes 2023 with 22 scalps (second-most), announced retirement after the end of Day Three (on Saturday) to end a remarkable career with 604 scalps (fifth overall).

ASHES CRICKET, YOU BEAUTY!

With a 2-2 scoreline, Ashes 2023 ended in a riveting fashion. Every match had its ups and downs, with four of them seeing a constant shift in momentum. Australia edged past England in the series opener in Edgbaston to win by two wickets and took a 2-0 lead with a 43-run win in the second Test at Lord's. Ben Stokes' 155 almost led to a repeat of Headingley 2019 heroics but the hosts fell short in pursuit of 371 at the Home of Cricket.

England rode on comeback duo Woakes and Mark Wood to win another tight contest in the following Test in Headingley, by three wickets, before rain helped Australia in the penultimate tie in Manchester. Stokes & Co. were made to work hard in the series finale before achieving an inspiring win.

The high-voltage series had plenty of moments. Rain comes to England's rescue The unpredictable English weather saved Australia from a possible hammering in the fourth and penultimate Test in Manchester. Also read: Ashes 2023: 'I want to keep going' - James Anderson to not retire post Stuart Broad's shocking announcement The Three Lions were made to sweat hard before Woakes-Moeen and, later, Stuart Broad did the job in what became the latter's final match. Moeen's Test return, Broad's dominance over Warner, his eventual retirement announcement (when many thought it would be James Anderson), the Jonny Bairstow dismissal, Mitchell Starc's controversial catch, three Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members' suspension and many more added to the endless drama. For Broad, the cricketing gods were on his side as he smacked a huge six on his last ball and ended the series with the final two wickets to wrap up an epic career. Stokes' unorthodox captaincy was matched by Cummins' go-slow approach. England entertained with their Bazball approach (starting the series with a first-ball four from Crawley's willow) whereas Australia stuck to their traditional ways as nothing separated the two heavyweights after five Tests.

England beat Australia in Ashes 2023 finale to end high-voltage series at 2-2 stalemate

Visitors Australia earned a slender 12-run lead in the first innings of the final Ashes contest at Stumps on Day 2 as the hosts made a comeback in the contest. Aussie batters Pat Cummins and Todd Murphy frustrated England bowlers in the final session as they put up a 49-run stand for the ninth wicket. England however dominated the first two sessions as Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and other pacers ran riot to break the back of Australian middle-order.

Having started the day at 61/1, Australia were trailing by 222 runs as they hoped to assert domination on Day 2. However, it was the brilliance of Joe Root that made the difference as he caught Marnus Labuschagne on 9 in the first slip. Ashes 2023: Australia earn slender 12-run lead as Cummins, Murphy frustrate England despite batting collapse

England and Australia are set to lock horns in the fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023, starting on Thursday (July 27) at The Oval, London. After Pat Cummins-led Australia had a narrow escape in the fourth Test, in Manchester, the visitors managed to retain the urn and will now gear up to win their first-ever Ashes series triumph in England since 2001.

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes-led England dominated proceedings in the fourth and penultimate Test, at Old Trafford, Manchester, from the word go. They opted to bowl first and dismissed Australia for 317 -- riding on Chris Woakes' five-for -- and made a mammoth 592 in reply with brisk contributions from Zak Crawley (189) and fifties from Jonny Bairstow (99*), Joe Root, Stokes, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali.

In their second essay, Australia did put up a fight but were still trailing by 61 runs with five wickets in hand at stumps on Day Four. With the fifth and final day's play being washed out completely due to persistent rain, England missed a chance to level the series 2-2. They will now hope to win the series decider and prevent the Aussies from claiming the five-Test series 3-1.

Ahead of The Oval Test, Brook said if the hosts win the finale, it will be 'a moral victory'. "We were dominating the game last week, weren't we? So if the game had played out, I would like to think we would have won that," Brook told reporters. "So if we can win this week, it almost can make it a moral victory," he opined.

Ashes 2023: Stern warning for Australia? England are massively up for final Test, says Zak Crawley

England had the edge over Australia in the fourth and penultimate Ashes Test, in Manchester, before rain played spoilsport on the final day with Australia trailing England by 61 runs with five wickets in hand in their second essay. Thus, with rain making no play possible on Sunday (July 23), Pat Cummins-led Australia managed to retain the urn with an unassailable 2-1 lead heading into the series decider at The Oval, London. Despite them retaining the urn, former England batter Mark Butcher feels Australia will be 'hurting' post the Manchester Test.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Butcher said, "The Oval Test, regardless of the fact the urn is not up for grabs, is going to crackle and fizz. Australia will be hurting after their performance here and their bowlers will want to show they can't be bullied and smashed for six an over."

Talking about the fourth and penultimate Test, England dominated proceedings from the start. Opting to bowl first, England rode on Chris Woakes' 5 for 62 to dismiss Australia for 317. In reply, England batters were at their attacking best from the word go and posted a mammoth 592 courtesy of Zak Crawley's 189, Joe Root's 84, Moeen Ali's 54, Harry Brook's 61, captain Ben Stokes' 51 and Jonny Bairstow's unbeaten 99. With a massive lead of 275, England had Australia reeling at 214 for 5 -- trailing by 61 runs -- at stumps on Day Four before rain washed out the entire final day's play.

At the post-match presentation, Stokes said, "It's a tough one to take, you know. The kind of cricket we played on the first three days and to be on the wrong side of the weather, it's a tough one. But it's part of the journey. I think coming into this game, it was a do-or-die game for us. Bowling them out for 320 and scoring 590, we couldn't do much. We'll have a lot of pride to play the next game."

Despite not managing a win at Old Trafford, Manchester, Stokes & Co. will push for a series-levelling win at The Oval, London in the final Test. Meanwhile, Cummins-led Australia will have to pull up their socks as they have been caught in a spot of bother in the previous two Tests. However, they have managed to retain the urn and will go for their first-ever away Ashes series win since 2001 in the forthcoming deciding Test.
