No. 1 ranked&nbsp;India are set to lock horns with second-positioned&nbsp;Australia in the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, London, commencing on June 07. Ahead of the marquee finale, Indian captain Rohit Sharma revealed his top-most Test highlight in recent years. Rohit made his debut in whites in late 2013, which was Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series but has cemented his spot in the red-ball format ever since he was promoted as an opener in late 2019. He has been involved in several memorable wins for India in Tests but picked Ajinkya Rahane-led side's famous 2-1 win over Tim Paine's Australia in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

<h2>'The way we played in Australia was probably the top highlight'</h2>

At an ICC event 'Afternoon With Test Legends’, also featuring Pat Cummins, Ross Taylor, and Ian Bell, Rohit said, "The last couple of years especially, after COVID-19. You know the times weren't that great. Especially the bubble, you didn't know what to expect. Stuck indoors and the younger boys were quite upset about that. But again, you need to beat the odds and come out on top. I thought the way we played in Australia was probably the top highlight, I would say. After losing the first Test match in Adelaide and then coming back to win then shows the strength and the depth of the team as well because we had a lot of injuries on that trip."

"I wasn't part of the first two Test matches. I was part of the third and fourth one. I know as a team what we were going through. So a really tough time, but we held our nerves. Like Pat just said, we came out on top but there was a lot of groundwork that happened behind the scene as well. A lot of the young players stepped in and turned things around for us. A lot of senior players were missing on that trip and that was certainly the best we played outside India. Again, the last series we played against India was another exciting series, difficult pitches and challenging ones. But we managed to go through that,"&nbsp;Hitman added.

Talking about India's memorable 2-1 win over Australia in 2020/21, the tourists were trailing 1-0 after losing the series opener by eight wickets following a debacle with the bat in their second essay (after attaining a 53-run lead). Following that, they were without regular captain Virat Kohli for the remainder of the series as Rahane took charge. With their back against the wall, India scripted an inspiring win to claim the series 2-1 with an impressive win in the second Test, in Melbourne, by eight wickets and a three-wicket victory at The Gabba, Brisbane in what was the series finale.

The likes of Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Hanuma Vihari, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, etc. chipped in during India's series triumph.&nbsp;

It will be interesting to see who will be the players who stand&nbsp;tall for India in the upcoming WTC finale versus Pat Cummins-led Australia.

Ahead of WTC final showdown, Indian captain Rohit Sharma picks his top-most Test career highlight

No. 1 ranked India are set to face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final on June 07 at The Oval, London. The match will present India with another chance to end their ICC title drought since 2013. It won't be an easy task as&nbsp;Australia will give them a tough challenge. Ahead of Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.'s final showdown versus the Aussies, former England spinner Monty Panesar picked one X-factor player apiece from both sides.

Panesar -- best known for his 17 scalps in England's famous 2-1 series win over hosts India in 2012/13 -- feels Cheteshwar Pujara will hold the key for India in the marquee finale whereas he picked Mitchell Starc as Australia's X-factor player.

<h2>'My X-factor batter will be Pujara for India. Starc will be one to watch out for from Australia'</h2>

"The Indian top-order is in form. The conditions will be similar to the Wankhede pitch which is fast and bouncy. My x-factor batter will be Pujara because he has done so well in these English conditions for Sussex. He is the guy who binds this batting lineup together," Panesar told PTI.

"He is good with his defence and if the ball is going to do a little bit, he can negotiate the Aussie bowlers and when the pitch is flat, the others can cash in with some attacking cricket. You don't need to be an extraordinary wicketkeeper in England. He has been keeping and batting well. He should play ahead of Bharat," he further mentioned.

"For Australia, Starc will be the one to watch out for. He is going to be quick and he is going to get that late movement. He can change the game with one spell. He is the guy Australia will go to when they need a wicket," Panesar added.

India and Australia locked horns in the red-ball format recently, during the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India. Back then, Pujara returned with&nbsp;140 runs in 4 matches, with a best of 59 whereas Starc only managed two scalps from an equal number of games. Both will be raring to go big in the WTC final and help their respective sides emerge on top.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Michael Neser.

WTC Final: Former England spinner names India and Australia's X-factor for mega clash

The stage is set for a blockbuster face-off as India lock horns with Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, London on Wednesday (June 07). Ahead of the marquee finale, many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their predictions and ex-South Africa captain AB de Villiers joined the bandwagon.

De Villiers admitted that it is tough to pick a favourite between No. 1 ranked&nbsp;India and heavyweights&nbsp;Pat Cummins-led Australia but believes Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will emerge on top on Day Five.

"Very difficult to say who are the favorites. Both teams have not been playing a lot of Test cricket of late but what I can say is that India in their last Test match at the Oval, have got a win against this very strong England team. They will be taking a bit of confidence from that," said De Villiers while speaking to JioCinema.

<h2>'India will come out on top on Day 5'</h2>

"I think India will come out on top on day five of the Test match. I think it might go all the way. It's a good wicket to bat on but I think the Indian spinners will come into play in the latter stages of the Test match," he further opined.

On Jasprit Bumrah's absence, De Villiers stated, "Bumrah is a big loss for the Indian bowling attack, but I do think that Mohammed Siraj is in the form of his life. He has done well there before. He has got that extra pace. He nips it around off-stump, and I think he is the biggest asset in India's bowling attack."

India lost the inaugural WTC final to New Zealand by eight wickets in Southampton in 2021. This time around, they will like to get past the finish line and end their ten-year-long title drought in ICC events as well.

India will win on Day 5 of WTC final vs Australia: AB de Villiers makes bold prediction

Australia skipper Pat Cummins, ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India, said that he preferred the breaks between games as the international calendar is getting busier every day and with that the workload of players.

"Yeah, they [breaks] are rare to come by," Cummins said ahead of the marquee clash at an ICC event. Notably, Australia will stay back in England&nbsp;where the WTC Final will take place, to play the five-Test Ashes series.

"So, yeah, we try and take a break when we can. I've always said that we have got six Test matches in the next two months, I'd much prefer to be slightly underdone than overdone. That's from a bowler's point of view. I always feel like it doesn't take too much to kind of get ready. And then I want to make sure I'm fresh physically for the matches," added Cummins.

While some Aussie players, including Cummins, had a break before the WTC Final, Indians, on the other hand, are coming from the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), except middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara who played some county cricket in England for preparation.

The Aussie skipper also said that his team is refreshed and ready to face India after a three-day training camp in Beckenham where Cummins spoke at the event.

"We have had some really good training at Beckenham the last week," said the fast bowler. "Obviously back home, we did a lot of training as well. So everyone's come in, we've trained really hard, everyone's rejuvenated, refreshed and pretty keen."

The WTC Final starts from June 7 at the Oval cricket ground in London where both the teams will face off each other in the first ICC Final since the 2003 ODI World Cup Final in South Africa.

Whichever team wins the trophy will be the first one to have all the ICC trophies to their name. India are in their second consecutive final of the two editions played so far while Australia is in their first WTC final.

WTC Final: Pat Cummins says 'refreshed' Australia ready to face India

Australia have two major Test series/match awaiting them - the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India and the Ashes against England. The WTC Final is scheduled to be played in England from June 7 and Aussie skipper Pat Cummins is fully focused on that.

“We’ve got India in the World Test Championship final first, which I think a lot of people forgot,” Cummins said to reporters before the WTC Final at the Oval in response to a question about Ashes.&nbsp;

Cummins also spoke about how the inaugural WTCH Final back in 2021 hit them when they actually saw New Zealand and India play the game and that every series now gave them something big to play for.

“It feels like second time around it’s got a little bit more on it. It felt like a big missed opportunity that first one. So it certainly gives a bit more context to every series now, something big to play for," Cummins said.

Further speaking on the marquee clash, Cummins opined that WTC cycle has made sure that the small series with two or three matches in them has a global context and something extra to play for.

“The big series, say Ashes or India series where you play four or five Test matches, are obviously big battles, whereas the more common series where you play two or three in a series, it [the World Test Championship] gives them a bit more global context and something a bit extra to play for,” added the Aussie skipper.

Notably, Australia are the first time finalist in WTC cycle while India are back in it second consecutive time in two editions. Both, India and Australia will be facing each in a ICC Final for the first time since 2003 ODI WC Final and whichever team wins the one-off Test, would be the first team in the world to win all ICC trophies.

WTC Final: 'Lot of people forgot...:' Aussie skipper Pat Cummins makes cheeky remark ahead of title clash

After IPL 2023, the cricketing fraternity has shifted focus to the red-ball format. While England are playing Ireland at home in a one-off contest, everyone is waiting for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia. It will be followed by Ashes 2023 as Ben Stokes &amp; Co. will host Pat Cummins-led Australia in the United Kingdom, starting on June 16.

Ahead of WTC final and Ashes 2023, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon off-spinner Nathan Lyon believes Cummins &amp; Co.'s&nbsp;preparations for the WTC summit clash will be unaffected by the Ashes. In addition, he&nbsp;referred to the upcoming WTC final&nbsp;as a "grand finale."

<h2>‘WTC final is our grand finale and then our season starts again’</h2>

The 35-year-old Lyon was quoted as saying by Australian Associated Press, "Yes, we are playing the Ashes, but we've got a big game that we're up for. This (WTC final) is our grand finale, and then our season basically starts again."

"That's probably where we're quite happy with where we're at with our planning. We are able to understand what we've got around the corner, and be OK. It's exciting to be part of the final and the fanfare and stuff around it, it's bloody special. I know every Australian fan is looking forward to the Ashes, and so they should be. But they should also be excited about this match," he added.

He concluded by saying, "It's going to be a good challenge. Both squads going at it and competing for one game, it's going to be a really good challenge. It's a fresh start. Australia's central contract for 2023-24 season: Todd Murphy makes the cut in CA's expanded list

Former Australia batter Shane Watson feels that Steve Smith shouldn't lead the national team again as the original skipper Pat Cummins is doing a great job. Cummins' mother recently passed away due to breast cancer and the key fast bowler missed the final two matches of the recently completed Border-Gavaskar Test series to remain in Australia alongside his grieving family.

Cummins’ absence from national duty will continue throughout March, with him to sit out the three ODI matches in India. Former skipper Steve Smith took the responsibility and led Australia to a heavy 10-wicket win over India in the second ODI after suffering defeat in the first match.

<h3>Watson goes harsh on Steve Smith</h3>

"No Steve shouldn't be leading the Aussie side again as Pat Cummins is doing good. He is doing a great job as a great leader. No question Steve Smith should lead the team, " Watson told ANI.

Smith has captained Australia in 34 Tests between 2014 and 2018, including Australia's most recent Test tour of India in 2017, a controversy-marred campaign in which Smith dominated with the bat, scoring three centuries.

Steve Smith was sacked from captaincy in 2018 after he and other teammates were found guilty in a ball tempering scandal during their South Africa tour. Smith, who captained the Men in Yellow across all the formats, was sacked as a leader, and a two-year leadership ban was imposed on him.

IND vs AUS 3rd ODI: 'Steve Smith shouldn't lead Australia' - Shane Watson highlights Pat Cummins' impact

Australia captain Patrick Cummins will not be returning to India to lead the side in the upcoming three-match ODI series and Steve Smith will be the stand-in captain. Notably, Cummins flew back to Australia after the second Test of Border-Gavaskar series, initially for the third Test only, to attend his ailing mother.

Cummins then stayed back after his mother passed away and will continue to stay there for some more time. Steve Smith, meanwhile, led in his absence in the last two Test of the series, which India won 2-1.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald also said that Cummins is still taking care of what has happened.

"Pat won’t be coming back, he’s still taking care of what’s happened back home," he said. "Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process," added McDonald.

The Australian cricket board, however, has not named a replacement for Cummins in the squad which now has 15 players in it.

Opening batsman David Warner and spinner Ashton Agar, however, will be available for the series. David Warner had flown back to Australia due to a fractured arm after the second Test and Ashton Agar was sent back as well midway through the series.

Apart from them, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh will also be making a comeback following a long absence due to injuries. Pacers Josh Hazlewood and Jhye Richardson, however, won't be available due to injuries. Nathan Ellis has been named as as a replacement for Richardson though.&nbsp;

Coach McDonald, while talking about the balance of the team, said he has had a conversation around it and there'll be a mix of combinations leading into the ODI World Cup, scheduled to played in India later this year.

"We've got a couple of conversations around the balance of the team we want to play, we've gone in with a structure with eight batters to bat a little bit deeper, we've tried that. So there'll be a mix of combinations as we lead into the World Cup. (There is) a lot of allrounders picked in the squad and can they all play in the one team. So we've got to answer a few of those questions," he said.

The ODI series starts on March 17 in Mumbai with next two matches scheduled in Vishakhapatnam and Chennai on March 19 and 22, respectively.

Steve Smith to lead Australia in India ODIs as Pat Cummins stays home after mother's death

Kane Williamson's 27th ton propelled New Zealand to a famous two-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the Christchurch Test on Monday (March 13). With this win, the current Test world champions New Zealand helped India enter the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Thus, the result of the ongoing India-Australia Test is not out of the picture as India have already qualified for the finale. For SL to qualify, they had to whitewash hosts NZ and hope that India does not win the Ahmedabad Test. While India's victory is very much out of the picture, with a tame draw on the cards, the Islanders are now out with a close defeat.&nbsp;

Thus, India will play in the WTC final for the second time in a row. After they missed a golden opportunity to win the inaugural edition in 2021, losing to New Zealand, India will now have another go at the coveted title. Here's when and where will India square off with Pat Cummins &amp; Co. at the WTC finale:&nbsp;

India vs Australia, WTC Final

Rohit Sharma-led India will meet the Aussies in the WTC summit clash on June 07. The match will be held at The Kennington Oval, London. June 12 will be the reserve day. At the venue, India have played 14 Tests; winning only two and losing five (with seven draws). However, they triumphed over England by 157 runs in their last tie at the venue in 2021.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Australia have played 38 Tests at The Oval, winning seven and losing 17 of them along with 14 draws.

India's last ICC title came in 2013 when they lifted the Champions Trophy in England and Wales under MS Dhoni's leadership. Will Rohit &amp; Co. end their ten-year-long ICC-title drought by winning the WTC final in June? Only time will tell...

WTC final: When and where will India lock horns with Australia to end 10-year-long ICC-title drought

New Zealand's thrilling two-wicket win over Sri Lanka, in Christchurch, confirmed India a place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka had to whitewash the hosts in the two-match Test series and pray for India to not win their ongoing Ahmedabad Test versus Australia in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy to topple Rohit Shamra &amp; Co. and join Australia in the WTC summit clash. Nonetheless, Kane Williamson's unbeaten 121, his 27th Test ton, propelled the Tim Southee-led Black Caps to a thrilling two-wicket victory, in pursuit of 285, on the last ball of the first Test on Monday (March 13).

Thus, India have now officially entered the WTC final and will lock horns with Pat Cummins-led Australia for the ICC title on June 07, at The Oval, London. It is to be noted that arch-rivals India and Australia will now lock horns in an ICC men's final for the first time after 20 years. The last time both sides squared off in an ICC finale was during the 2003 ODI World Cup in Johannesburg.&nbsp;

Here's what happened in the last ICC men's final between India, Australia

The last time India faced Australia in a men's ICC final was during the 2003 ODI World Cup. Back then, the invincibles Ricky Ponting-led Aussies came into the summit clash without dropping a game. Meanwhile, India started poorly before turning the tides emphatically to reach the summit clash. During the finale, nothing clicked for India despite winning the toss. Ganguly-led India invited Australia to bat first, who rode on Ponting's 140 not out&nbsp;and Damien Martyn's 88* to post a daunting 359 for 2. In reply, India only managed 234 all-out with Virender Sehwag's 82 being the top score.

Indian fans will surely hope for the script to be in Rohit &amp; Co.'s favour this time around.&nbsp;At present, they are involved in the fourth and final Test versus Australia, in Ahmedabad, of the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. They lead the series 2-1.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, after the end of the second Test in Delhi Cummins departed for Sydney to be with his ailing mother. Though he was supposed to return for&nbsp;the following Indore Test, given his mother’s health status then, Cummins stayed home as Steve Smith captained in the third match. The same happened ahead of the ongoing fourth Test in Ahmedabad.

In Pat’s absence, Australia roped in fit-again Mitchell Starc in the XI who proved to be vital in Australia’s quest of making a comeback in the Test series. As Australia won the Indore Test by nine wickets, they booked their ticket in the finals of the World Test Championship to be held in June.

As things stand, Australia are cruising ahead with a rather brilliant start in this innings. The man-in-form, Usman Khawaja notched up his maiden hundred against India in India while all-rounder Cameron Green also looked good, having crossed his first fifty on tour.

However, Pat Cummins is slated to return to India for the three-match ODI series that starts on March 17th in Mumbai.

Pat Cummins' mother Maria loses battle against illness, Aussie players wear black armband in respect

Steve Smith is set to lead Australia in the fourth and final Test versus India as well, with regular skipper Pat Cummins to remain in Australia with his ailing mother. The Aussie speedster's mother Maria is ill with breast cancer and is in palliative care, as reported by Cricket Australia. Thus, Cummins had skipped the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, as well -- which the visitors won by nine wickets to keep the series alive at 2-1 -- and will now also miss the series decider in Ahmedabad, starting on March 09.

Under Smith, Australia produced a clinical performance in the third Test at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Opting to bat first, Rohit Sharma-led India folded for a paltry 109 -- thanks to&nbsp;Matthew Kuhnemann's 5 for 16 -- before Australia only managed 197 but took a vital 88-run lead. In reply, India once again fell flat in their second essay; being dismissed for 163 in 60.3 overs. Chasing 76, Smith &amp; Co. chased down the target with nine wickets in hand in the morning session of Day 3.&nbsp;

After leading Australia to an emphatic win, Smith said after the game, "My time is done. It's Pat's team now. I've obviously been able to stand in this week, obviously in tough circumstances with Patty going home. Our thoughts are still with him back home."

India vs Australia, BGT 2022/23: Steve Smith set to lead in final Test in Pat Cummins' absence

Following the third Test in Indore where Australia walked away with a nine-wicket win, stand-in captain Steve Smith said his run as the skipper ends here as Pat Cummins will now take over the reins heading into the fourth Test.

"My time is done. It's Pat's team now," Smith said after leading Australia to its second win on Indian soil under his captaincy.

Meanwhile, it was after the end of the Delhi Test when Cummins flew home to be with his ailing mother&nbsp;and was said to be returning before the start of the Indore game. That eventually didn’t happen as Smith led in his absence;&nbsp;and now as per the latest reports, he could well lead the side in the Ahmedabad Test also as Cummins is likely to stay back and spend some more time with his mother.

As reported in the Times of India (TOI), the Australian head coach Andrew McDonald is in touch with Cummins and is also keeping a tab on his status ahead of the final Test that begins in five days'&nbsp;time. McDonald said while Pat is very much invested in what’s happening here in India, for him to stay home in Sydney with his mother is what is required now.

"He's obviously dealing with what he's dealing with at home but he's still so invested in this group," McDonald told reporters on Saturday. "Our thoughts are still with him and his family at this difficult time.

"We're in constant contact with him daily, so at the moment he's not here and the test match is a few days away, so we'll discuss with Pat on a daily basis," the coach added.

Indore win seals Australia’s place in the WTC final

After winning the third Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, Australia qualified for the finals of the WTC that will take place at the Oval in London on June 7th. For India to now qualify for the finals, they must beat the touring side in the final Test, or even if they lose or the match is drawn, they then must hope for New Zealand to win their home two-match Test series against Sri Lanka to ensure India is staying ahead on the points tally.

Pat Cummins set to stay home with ailing mother as Steve Smith likely to lead side in final Test: Reports

The No. 1 ranked Australian Test side have been a pale shadow of themselves in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus hosts India. After the first two Tests, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. have already conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead to Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. and will be aiming to keep the series alive in the third and penultimate Test, which kicks off on March 01 in Indore.

Ahead of the third Test, former Australian skipper Ian Chappell has lashed out at the current Aussie line-up for their poor performances, raised questions on their preparations, shot and team selections. In his coloum for ESPNCricinfo, he wrote, "Sweeping regularly is not the answer to playing good spin bowling, and anyone who says so is talking through his hat."

<section>
Chappell further opined, "The odd player is very good at sweeping and should utilise the shot, but for the majority there are better ways. Any good spin bowler who makes the ball bounce is likely to expose the dangers in sweeping constantly. Australia prepared on special scarified pitches in Sydney and chose not to play a single tour game in India for the gruelling month-long series."

"You don't discover how to play good spin bowling later in life on a scarified Australian pitch just prior to a vital tour of India. You have to learn good footwork -- coming three paces out of your crease or retreating quickly onto the back foot -- at a young age," he mentioned.

'Australia's selection&nbsp;has been awfully inconsistent and&nbsp;irrational'

Chappell went on to blast the Australian team management for their lack of batting strategies on Indian tracks&nbsp;and raised eyebrows on the team selection for&nbsp;the first two Tests. "It should have been obvious in Australia's build-up what kinds of batting strategies needed to be used in India. The most beneficial are to watch the ball closely, more so than in Australia, and that there is a fraction more time than you think. Selectors can be fooled into thinking that playing spin bowling well in Australia automatically means success will follow on Indian pitches.

"That isn't so but if the method in Australia is a sound one, selectors should assume it could lead to success in India. Once a batter understands about the extra time on slightly slower Indian pitches, he can work the ball into a gap to collect precious runs. Those runs, especially early in an innings, when survival is treacherous, can frustrate even the best spinners, " said Chappell.

The ex-Aussie captain added, "Australia's selection on this tour has been awfully inconsistent and at times irrational. Getting selection right makes for an air of calm, which, along with effectively putting a stop to dressing-room tantrums, can aid team spirit.

"Like picking a well-balanced cricket team, good administrations should be a sensible combination of playing knowledge at the highest level along with sound business acumen so the game is well managed. The Australian cricket team is very good at many venues around the cricket world but alarm bells should have rung long ago about the trip to India."

Cummins won't lead the national side in the third Test as he remains in Australia for his ailing mother. In his absence, Steve Smith will take charge of the side and aim for a 2-1 scoreline after the end of the Indore Test to keep the series alive. Meanwhile another win for India, in Indore, will cement their spot in the ICC World Test Championship final (WTC).

Awfully inconsistent, irrational: Ex-Australia captain rips apart Pat Cummins & Co for poor show in India

Australian captain Pat Cummins will miss the third Test against India in Indore as he is&nbsp;staying back with his ailing mother who is currently in palliative care. In his absence, former skipper Steve Smith will leave the side in the third Test that begins on March 1st. Earlier, following the second Test in Delhi, Cummins flew home to be with his ill mother and vowed to return in time for the Indore match. However, he has now released a statement saying he’s staying back with his family in this hour and has thanked Cricket Australia for supporting him.

"I have decided against returning to India at this time as my mother is ill and in palliative care. I feel I am best being here with my family. I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding," Pat Cummins said in a statement.

Meanwhile, not only Cummins, Australia will also miss the services of injured players in opener David Warner and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, both of whom boarded the same flight back home with Pat. While David suffered concussion and an elbow fracture during the Delhi Test, Hazlewood was benched since the beginning of the tour as he continues to recover from the Achilles problem.

While Cricket Australia hasn’t named any replacement for Cummins, fit now Mitchell Starc is likely to take his place in the team for the upcoming Test. Whereas, Mitchell Swepson, who went home after the end of Nagpur match for the birth of his first child, will also be available for selection.

Struggling Australia to avoid series whitewash

To say that Aussies have struggled against the spin on this tour would be an understatement. Of the 40 wickets that have fallen across two Tests, 32 of them have gone to the spinners with Ravindra Jadeja coming out to be the biggest threat. While he contributed big time with both bat and ball in the first Test by scoring 70 and picking up a five-for in the first innings, he picked his career-best figures of seven for 42 in the second innings of the Delhi Test.

Now for Australia to avoid getting in a situation where they could be out of the race for a spot in the World Test Championship finals, they have to ensure they are at least winning one game in the remaining two Tests. Under Smith, they will fancy their chances of making a return in the Border-Gavaskar series.

IND vs AUS: Cummins to stay back in Australia with ailing mother, Steve Smith named captain for Indore Test

Rohit Sharma-led India has gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Pat Cummins-led Australia. After winning the series opener, in Nagpur, by innings and 132 runs, India defeated Australia in the second Test, in the national capital, by six wickets and are favourites to win the remaining two games as well. Ahead of the third and penultimate Test, to be held in Indore, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels the home side will whitewash the Aussies and slammed Cummins &amp; Co.

Speaking on Sports Tak, Harbhajan opined that the current Aussie team looks like a pale shadow of its former self and slammed them for creating so much confusion in their preparations. A lot was expected of the No. 1 ranked Aussie side but they are certainly on the mat with a chance to lose the series 4-0. Bhajji added that had it been a ten-match series, India would have still won 10-0.

“Australia practised against Ravichandran Ashwin’s duplicate, but I feel the Australian team itself is a duplicate one. Their mindset is such that they are only focusing on negative things," said the legendary spinner Harbhajan.

Bhajji asserted, "They created so much confusion that they lost the game even before the first ball was bowled. It doesn’t seem like they have done any preparation for this tour. Looking at their performance, I think the only thing they practised was getting out."

In the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, England’s James Anderson returned to attaining the number one spot in the bowler’s category, ending Australian Pat Cummins’ four-year run at the top of the chart. James Anderson ends Pat Cummins' four-year run as No 1 Test bowler, attains top spot in latest ICC rankings

Australian&nbsp;captain Pat Cummins will fly home mid-way into the India Test series&nbsp;due to an illness in the family but will return to lead the team for the Indore match&nbsp;that begins on March 1st. Cummins will leave for Sydney in between of the second and third Test, as first reported in the Australian media. During the second Test in Delhi that India won by six wickets, Cummins didn’t bowl in the second innings but returned with figures of one for 41 in the first innings. With the bat in hand, he scored 33 in the first innings while he got out on a first-ball duck to Ravindra Jadeja in the next innings.

Australia suffered two massive defeats in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series. First&nbsp;they lost the Nagpur Test by an innings and 132 runs, and then they got floored in the Delhi game inside three days losing&nbsp;the second Test by six wickets. Not only did they lose the chance of winning a Test series in India for the first time since 2004, but they also failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy&nbsp;for the third straight time, having lost the previous two editions at home in 2018 and 2020.

Meanwhile, two successive losses have also dent Australia’s points percentage on the World Test Championship standings as their PCT has now dropped to 66.67 from 70.83. However, they still remain on the top of the table with India inching closer - who are currently placed second, as their PCT has increased to 64.06.

While for India to directly qualify for the finals of the 2023 WTC, they either have to beat Australia by margins of 3-0, 3-1 or best whitewash them 4-0. Whereas, for Australia to remain in race for the summit clash, they have to avoid any of the above-mentioned outcome and try and win at least one of the remaining two games in addition to hoping that New Zealand doesn’t lose their home Test series against Sri Lanka.

Australian captain Pat Cummins will fly home mid-way into the India Test series due to an illness in the family but will return to lead the team for the Indore match that begins on March 1st. First they lost the Nagpur Test by an innings and 132 runs, and then they got floored in the Delhi game inside three days losing the second Test by six wickets. Not only did they lose the chance of winning a Test series in India for the first time since 2004, but they also failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy for the third straight time, having lost the previous two editions at home in 2018 and 2020. IND vs AUS: Pat Cummins to fly home mid-way into India series, Josh Hazlewood also ruled out

Australian captain Pat Cummins is clearly upset with the result of the second Test in Delhi that ended in favour of India winning it by six wickets. The match, much like the one played in Nagpur, ended inside three days but the only difference here was that Australia were ahead in the game at one point, unlike in the previous Test. Following dismal batting show across both innings in the first match, the Aussie batters showed significant improvement in Delhi as they scored 263 runs in the first innings after electing to bat first.

They even dismissed India on 262, and were ahead in the match after stumps on day two when their scorecard read 61 for one. However, things fell apart in the first session on day three when Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin picked the remaining nine wickets for 52 runs. Though India did lose four wickets in their second innings, they ended up winning the match and even retained the Border-Gavaskar series.

Cummins, who didn’t bowl a single over in the second innings rued the missed opportunity and urged everyone in the dressing room to review their performances after yet another disappointing loss.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media after the match, Cummins said, “I thought 260 was a decent score in the first innings. The guys bounced back well. But India batted well, just 1-2 partnerships and you can get to that 260 mark quite easily. In the innings break, it was all even. Disappointed, we were ahead of the game but we slipped.”

“We need a review on what could have been done different. (On batters getting out to sweeps) Everyone controls their own game; some balls just have your name. But we need a review on the shot choice, did we do things right or not,” the Aussie captain said.

Meanwhile, following Nagpur Test, Australia made some changes to their XI and brought in Travis Head – who even opened during the second innings in absence of David Warner, who got subbed off due to concussion and fracture in his arm. The visiting team also roped in left-armer Matthew Kuhnemann, who also made his debut.

Now, despite making&nbsp;several changes, Australia suffered the same fate as they&nbsp;fell prey to spin bowling on such tracks.

“Both games were disappointing, this one in particular. We were ahead in the game and that doesn't happen often in India. This loss hurts,” Cummins added.

IND vs AUS: Disappointed with Delhi Test result, Pat Cummins urges players to review their performances

It took a sheer piece of brilliance in the field by Australian skipper Pat Cummins to dismiss Indian spinner Axar Patel on day 2 of the second Test in Delhi as the left-arm spinner almost single-handedly denied the visitors a big lead in the first innings. Batting at 74 with nine fours and three maximums already to his name, Axar tried to whack a ball thorough mid-on off Todd Murphy, but only for Cummins to pull a one-handed stunner to dismiss him. Axar was the ninth Indian wicket to fall with the home team trailing by just four runs in the first innings. Have a look at the catch below:

Earlier in the day, India were in soup with seven wicket down for a score of 139 runs in reply to Australia's first innings total of 263. Axar then joined forces with fellow spinner Ravi Ashwin and the duo added 114 runs for the right wicket before Ashwin was caught off Cummins by Renshaw at an individual score of 37. Axar also fell in the next over after hitting Murphy for a six but by then India were just four shy of Australia's first innings total. The southpaw scored 74 runs before going back to the hut, his second fifty in the series. India were finally bowled out for 262 runs and conceded one run lead in the first innings.&nbsp;

India vs Australia, 2nd Test: Pat Cummins pulls blinder to send Axar Patel packing - Watch

At the start of the third session on day two of the first test against Australia, India were sitting pretty with a lead of 52 runs and skipper Rohit Sharma batting at 120, alongside Ravindra Jadeja. The pair&nbsp;had added 61 runs by then and we set for more with Australia&nbsp;looking wary of the partnership.

The last session started with the visitors taking the new ball to start off the things and it was Rohit's visiting counterpart Patrick Cummins who decided to have a go with the ball.

The over started with a no-ball as Cummins overstepped but then got back in his groove quickly to produce an edge of the third ball of the over. But alas, Steve Smith at slip had a day to forget as he dropped the chance, albeit a tad difficult one. Rohit, who was batting at 120 at the time, took a couple of the dropped chance.

Patrick Cummins, however, had a different plan as he clean-bowled Rohit the very next ball with an absolute peach off a delivery. Have a look at the dismissal:

Cummins sent down a full and straight ball on the middle-off line and the new cherry moved ever&nbsp;so slightly to go past Rohit's defence and sent his off stump rolling.

Australia looked to peg India back with the wicket of Srikar Bharat, who fell&nbsp;shortly after Rohit and India were 240/7. Axar Patel, however, stood by Ravindra Jadeja as both southpaws completed their fifties to take India to 321/7 at the end of day's play with the total lead of 144 runs.

Earlier, Todd Murphy, the 22-year-old debutant offie from Australia took three more wickets after dismissing KL Rahul on Day 1. Murphy eventually completed his five-wicket haul with the wicket of Bharat. Apart from that, he took wickets&nbsp;of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and nightwatchman Ravichandran Ashwin.

Suryakumar Yadav, the debutant from India's side, could not mirror his white-ball form in the test and was dismissed for eight runs off 20 balls by Nathan Lyon off a classic off-spinner's delivery.

Ind vs Aus, 1st Test: Pat Cummins bowls a jaffa to send Rohit's off stump cartwheeling - Watch

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja lavished huge praise on Rohit Sharma and claimed that he&nbsp;has put the seeds of fear in Pat Cummins' head with his batting in the first&nbsp;Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, in Nagpur. Rohit took&nbsp;on the Aussie skipper Cummins when India came out to bat in the fag end of Day 1 to shake his confidence and then played his trademark pull shot on Day 2 to force his Australian counterpart to go out of the attack.&nbsp;

On Cricbuzz, Jadeja was asked if Rohit had sown the seeds of fear in Cummins' head. To this, the former cricketer agreed&nbsp;and said that the&nbsp;India captain had taken Cummins out of the game on the first day of the Test, with the Aussies already on the back foot after folding for 177, and that six he hit off him on Day 2 showed his dominance.

Jadeja said, "Absolutely. He had sown the seeds of fear in Cummins yesterday and now he has come to take the fruits. He almost took Cummins out of the game yesterday. And today, with that six, he showed dominance."

He hailed Rohit for his stupendous 120 (212) to take India to a dominant position on Day 2 of the opening Test. "Rohit Sharma is always a cool customer. He just goes on his path like an elephant that doesn't look here and there despite the noise around it. The pitch is up and down and we saw Virat Kohli have a reaction to the nature of the pitch. We don't see that from Rohit at all. What we saw today from him was just brilliant."

"Yesterday in the evening, he was playing at a different pace. When he came in today, he went at a slow rate which means that Australia bowled well, but Rohit Sharma is in a zone which is important at this time."

But seeing Rohit Sharma it feels like there is nothing on the pitch to be worried about. When he is there, his calmness does reflect through," signed off Jadeja.

Rohit slammed his 9th Test ton on Day 2 of the Nagpur Test. While he did dominate Cummins, the latter had the last laugh by dismissing Hitman on a peach of a delivery. After Rohit fell for a sublime 120, India rode on an unbroken eighth-wicket stand between half-centurions Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel to go to stumps at 321 for 7; leading by 144 runs.

IND vs AUS, 1st Test: Rohit Sharma has sown the seeds of fear in Pat Cummins' head, feels Ajay Jadeja

Australian captain Pat Cummins on Wednesday, Friday 8th hinted that off-spinner Todd Murphy could be making his Test debut against India in Nagpur. Speaking from the team hotel on the eve of the first Border-Gavaskar Test, Cummins said several factors will come into play while deciding the best XI. Two days before the start of the marquee series, the pitch at the VCA stadium was watered but in selective patches - while the curators watered the middle of the surface and areas outside the right-handers' off stump at one end, they left it dry on good lengths outside the left-handers' off stump on the other ends. Pat said the team management hasn't talked about that in particular yet but feels it could still play a role in finalising the XI.&nbsp;

"I think it is a factor over here. With so much traffic from the right-handers bowling, at times there is a bit more out there for the left-handers. The Indian line-up is going to be packed full of right-handers, so I think it plays a small factor," Pat said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

Speaking highly of uncapped Todd Murphy, who by now was behind Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson in regards to playing as a second fiddle to Nathan Lyon, has emerged as a front-runner to play as the fourth bowler. Cummins feels with too much to offer for the off-spinners against the right-handers, keeping in mind India's expected XI too, both Murphy and Lyon could come in handy for the visitors.

"I think he'd be as prepared as he could be. He's been bowling beautifully in the nets over here. He's started really well for Victoria in first-class cricket. If he got the nod, he's got Nathan Lyon down the other end that he can work with; he's ready. Everyone in the squad here has had really good preparation. Whoever we pick is 100% ready to go," Cummins added.

While it might be too big a risk to leave out two bowlers (Agar and Swepson) who could spin it away from the right-handed batters, Cummins added saying,

"It's a factor. These conditions, they really spin, so just really good bowling is what you're after, being consistent time and time again. I don't think you need to go searching for anything more; the conditions will come to you," the fast bowler added.

Meanwhile, other than this, Australia will also have to make a choice between picking Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw for number 6th spot, both of who had played Tests in India before. In absence of all-rounder Cameron Green, Handscomb - a specialist of spin bowling, could be chosen.&nbsp;

ALSO READ: 'Dravid will be tempted to play Shubman Gill at 5 given his recent records,' says ex-national selector Speaking highly of uncapped Todd Murphy, who by now was behind Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson in regards to playing as a second fiddle to Nathan Lyon, has emerged as a front-runner to play as the fourth bowler. While it might be too big a risk to leave out two bowlers (Agar and Swepson) who could spin it away from the right-handed batters, Cummins added saying, "It's a factor. These conditions, they really spin, so just really good bowling is what you're after, being consistent time and time again. I don't think you need to go searching for anything more; the conditions will come to you," the fast bowler added. Meanwhile, other than this, Australia will also have to make a choice between picking Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw for number 6th spot, both of who had played Tests in India before. In absence of all-rounder Cameron Green, Handscomb - a specialist of spin bowling, could be chosen.

IND vs AUS: Pat Cummins hints at playing debutant Todd Murphy, keeps mum on final XI ahead of Nagpur Test

As the cricketing world gears up for the marquee Border-Gavaskar series that starts from February 9th in Nagpur, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif is looking forward to one battle – Virat Kohli vs Pat Cummins. Two of the most dominant figures, Kohli and Cummins have a history together with the Australian remaining on top in a head-to-head battle. Having dismissed Virat five out of six times in the past, Pat is expected to deliver this time as well. Latif, who runs his YouTube channel, opines that Cummins will have a psychological advantage over Kohli come the Test series.

Latif added owing to Cummins’ bowling angle, he tends to trouble the best of batters – be it Kohli or even Babar Azam. With the new ball or even with the reversing one, the Aussie captain will remain a threat to the star Indian batter.

"Pat Cummins has really troubled Kohli by dismissing him five times in six games. He may not have such domination against any other batter. The way he angles the ball in and then manages to take it away will trouble batters like Kohli and Babar Azam. So this is definitely a battle to watch out for and Cummins will be a threat whether the ball is new or reversing," said Latif on his YouTube channel.

Not only Cummins, Lyon will also come across as a potential wicket-taker against India on the rank turners. Latif feels although India has played him well over the years, they still have to be wary of him given the experience he has now on his back.

“If there are turning pitches on offer, Nathan Lyon has enough experience (to exploit them). But India’s batters play him very well. Australia’s pitches are different - there is bounce over there and the ball also skids a bit. But the Indian batters will get additional time over here, so I feel they can manage well. India, however, cannot take him lightly in the fourth innings,” the former Pakistan skipper added.

Meanwhile, other than Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmadabad will host the remaining three Tests.

Virat Kohli vs Pat Cummins is the battle everyone's waiting for, says former Pakistan captain

India went past Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the ongoing home leg but have their toughest opponents next in the form of Australia as both sides will lock horns in the upcoming edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which gets underway on February 09 in Nagpur. The last three Test series between India and Australia have lived up to expectations -- with a lot of drama and action on and off the 22-yard cricket strip -- and another rollicking series is on the cards between the two heavyweights with the ICC World Test Championship final tickets up for grabs.&nbsp;

Ahead of the marquee series, former Aussie stumper Ian Healy made a glaring claim. He feels if the pitches are fair, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. will win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since early 2017. It is to be noted that the last three editions have gone in favour of India, with them beating Australia twice in a row on their home soil as well.&nbsp;

"I think if they produce fair Indian wickets, that are good batting wickets, to start with, (that) probably spin and spin pretty consistently but spin a long way, late in the match we (Australia) win," Healy said on 'SENQ Breakfast'.&nbsp;

Healy further pointed out, "I'm worried about (Mitchell) Starc and (Nathan) Lyon in the first Test if they're unfair wickets which I've seen in the last series, where balls were jumping ridiculously and sliding down low from day one, I think India play those conditions better than us." Thus, he cited, "I want the players to be very aware if they are escaping that pressure (from the locals) if you're escaping that pressure and hiding in your room using the golf simulator I think you've got to do something else."

Australia will win Border Gavaskar Trophy if India produce fair pitches, claims former Aussie stumper

After beating Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the white-ball home series, India will now square off with Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the last edition comprising four Tests. The four Tests between heavyweights India and Australia is keenly awaited by the ardent cricket fans as the three few series have lived up to expectations, if not exceeded them. India have won the last three editions but will have a big task to beat Pat Cummins &amp; Co. and assure themselves a place in the ICC World Test Championship final, to be held in early June.&nbsp;

For India, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be without the services of Jasprit Bumrah -- who might join the team for the last two Tests subject to fitness -- whereas Shreyas Iyer is doubtful for the series opener, on January 09. Australia, on the other hand, have a real chance to win their first red-ball series on Indian soil after 19 years following their dominance at home, versus West Indies and South Africa. Overall, it promises to be a humdinger of a series with plenty of sledging, intense drama and action.&nbsp;

India vs Australia, Border-Gavaskar Trophy: From full schedule to streaming details - All you need to know

On Wednesday (January 11), Australia announced a strong 18-man squad for their forthcoming four-match Test series versus India, starting on February 09. The last three editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have been won by India and with them hosting it this time around, after 2017, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be confident but Pat Cummins-led Aussies have been in superb form of late and, hence, will surely pose a major threat to Team India. The series holds a lot of significance with the ICC World Test Championship final to be held in June 2023. India and Australia are expected to meet in the summit clash.

Australia have included as many as four spinners. Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Swepson and uncapped spinner&nbsp;Todd Murphy have been named in the 18-member squad&nbsp;for the matches in Nagpur, New Delhi, Dharamshala and Ahmedabad, respectively. The series will be followed by three ODIs before IPL 2023's commencement. It is to be noted that this will be the last BGT comprising four Tests as the editions to follow will comprise five matches. Here's Australia's squad for the India Tests:

Head selector George Bailey spoke at length about the retention of Ashton Agar -- who went wicketless in the rain-marred Australia-South Africa SCG Test -- the addition of Peter Handscomb and spinner Swepson. "Ashton Agar continues to impress following his comeback in Sydney and we believe left-arm finger spin will play an important role in Indian conditions,"&nbsp;Bailey said in a news release. "Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A. With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option. Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India, which will be invaluable to his development."

Bailey added, "Peter Handscomb deserves his place back in the squad. His domestic form has been strong recently and Pete has proven he can perform at test level. His experience against spin on the subcontinent is valuable and he is also an exceptionally good close-to-the-wicket catcher."

Further, Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the first Test due to a finger injury but is expected to join the team after the series opener. He remains part of the squad. The pace-bowling department comprise Cummins, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood whereas Steve Smith, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw and Travis Head will be their main batters. Cameron Green has&nbsp;also been selected in the hope that he will recover from his broken finger.

IND vs AUS: Cummins & Co. include four spinners in squad for Border-Gavaskar Trophy; Starc out of 1st Test

Pat Cummins-led Australia have dominated their ongoing home series versus South Africa. They ended 2022 with a bang, defeating Dean Elgar-led South Africa by an innings and 182 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead and beat the Proteas at home after a long gap of 17 years. With the series in the pocket, Australia will aim to kick off 2023 with a bang with a series whitewash and further consolidate their chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship final, to be held later in June.

Talking about the third and final Test, it will be held at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney. While the game is an inconsequential tie, Elgar &amp; Co. have lots to play for with a WTC final ticket at stake. The Proteas entered the series as the second-ranked side in the points table but have now lost their last four Tests and are reeling at the fourth position. All is still not over for them. A win in the SCG Test and a series whitewash over West Indies, in a two-match series at home, will keep SA alive in the race for the WTC final. Nonetheless, they have to address some serious issues in their batting order to stand any chance of going ahead in the second cycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For Australia, the likes of David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, etc. are firing on all cylinders. Hence, it seems highly unlikely that SA will challenge the hosts. However, the tourists cannot be ruled out completely after having gone through two embarrassing defeats Down Under.&nbsp;

"We gave Joshy every chance, (but) it just got to a stage where (he) more than anyone else felt like he was a little bit underdone," Cummins said.

"It's a mark of the man really; he himself said 'don't feel quite right', so he kind of pulled himself out of selection," he added.

Boland made his Test debut at the very ground last year against England during the Ashes picking up his career-best 6/7 in the second innings. In five Test matches played so far, Boland has picked 25 wickets at an astonishing average of 10.36. Other than him, Australian opener David Warner will also be playing his 100th Test match at the MCG.
