Virat Kohli is the leading run-getter in IPL 2024, which has so far seen 23 games getting completed till Tuesday (April 9). Kohli is at the top of the Orange Cap list with 316 runs, following his 72-ball 113 not out in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) six-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR)in match 19 at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur.
Despite his hundred, Kohli was criticised by several people for his poor strike rate, especially at the start of the innings. Being asked to bat first, RCB were 88 for no loss in 10 overs, with captain Faf du Plessis-Kohli's opening stand weathering any early storms. However, Kohli was slammed for his ordinary scoring rate.
At the halfway mark of RCB's innings, Kohli was 45 off 37 balls, striking at 121.62. While he finished at 156.94, many blamed both the RCB openers' start for them ending at 183-3.They eventually lost by six wickets courtesy of RR opener Jos Buttler's unbeaten 100 and skipper Sanju Samson's 69 (42).
Now, Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has slammed those questioning Kohli's strike rate. Rajkumar said, as quoted by India Today, "Some people who are saying this nonsense, I think they don't know the context of the match, what the situation of the match was and how the team was struggling."
He further opined, "They speak only to be in the news. Just because whenever you speak about a normal player, it does not bring you in the news headlines, but if you speak about a player like Virat Kohli, it brings you in the news headlines."
The coach further added, “Look, this is a lobby which is running an agenda. They're just pushing an agenda, and as fans or true analysts we don't care about their agenda. See, the king will always be the king. A person who knows even the 'C' of cricket would never do such nonsense."
A lot has been said and written about Kohli's calculative method of batting in T20Is, with many calling for his omission from India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad. However, that is highly unlikely as the star batter has dominated the mega event, being the leading run-getter (1,141 runs), however, his strike rate is a moderate 131.3.
At present,Kohli-starrer RCB are struggling in IPL 2024. After five games, they are languishing in the ninth spot with only a solitary win. They will next face Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in match 25 on Thursday (April 11).
