Three coaches of the Jhansi-bound Taj Express train caught fire in southeast Delhi's Sarita Vihar area on Monday, officials said.

"We received a call at 4.24 pm regarding the fire in four coaches of the Taj Express train. Eight fire tenders were pressed into service and efforts to douse the blaze are underway," a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined. According to police, the train caught fire halfway between Okhla and Tughlakabad railway stations after departing from New Delhi Railway Station around 3:30 pm.

According to the authorities, the general chair vehicle coaches D3 and D4 were completely destroyed in the fire, while D2 sustained minor damage.

As firefighters attempted to put out the fire, massive flames shot out of the carriages and billowed black smoke.DFS representatives had earlier reported that four coaches had caught fire.

The fire was reported to the police control room at around 4:40 pm. According to a senior police official, "After receiving the call, police personnel rushed to the spot near Apollo Hospital."

According to him, no one was wounded in the event since the passengers quickly transferred to other coaches and disembarked off the train.

"The train was running about 10 hours late and had started from New Delhi Railway Station at 3 pm. The train runs from New Delhi Railway Station to Jhansi," a police officer said.

"The train was stopped and the fire was doused. No one was injured as all the passengers have moved to the other adjoining coaches," officer told PTI.
