<p>"We received a call at 4.24 pm regarding the fire in four coaches of the Taj Express train. Eight fire tenders were pressed into service and efforts to douse the blaze are underway," a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said.</p>

<p>The cause of the fire was not immediately determined. According to police, the train caught fire halfway between Okhla and Tughlakabad railway stations after departing from New Delhi Railway Station around 3:30 pm.</p>

<p>According to the authorities, the general chair vehicle coaches D3 and D4 were completely destroyed in the fire, while D2 sustained minor damage.</p>

<p>As firefighters attempted to put out the fire, massive flames shot out of the carriages and billowed black smoke.&nbsp;DFS representatives had earlier reported that four coaches had caught fire.</p>

<p>The fire was reported to the police control room at around 4:40 pm. According to a senior police official, "After receiving the call, police personnel rushed to the spot near Apollo Hospital."</p>

<p>"The train was running about 10 hours late and had started from New Delhi Railway Station at 3 pm. The train runs from New Delhi Railway Station to Jhansi," a police officer said.</p>

<p>"The train was stopped and the fire was doused. No one was injured as all the passengers have moved to the other adjoining coaches," officer told PTI.</p>

The fire broke out at 5.15 am on Saturday and the Fire service personnel who arrived at the spot half an hour later put down the blaze by 7.15 am,&nbsp;said the release from Southern Railway.</p>

<p>"This is a private party coach that was attached at Nagercoil Junction yesterday (Aug 25) by train no. 16730 (Punalur-Madurai Exp). Party coach was detached and kept at Madurai Stabling line. The passengers in the private party coach have....smuggled gas cylinder and this has caused the fire," the release said.</p>

<p>The railways said that the private coach had started its journey from Lucknow from August 17. It was scheduled to return to Chennai on Sunday. From there, it was to return to Lucknow.</p>

<p>"While the coach was stabled/parked, some members of the party in the private coach were using the illegally smuggled cooking gas cylinder unauthorisedly for preparing tea/snacks, which caused the fire in the stabled/parked coach. Most of the passengers could get out of the coach on noticing fire. Some passengers had already got down at platform before detachment of coach," it said railways.<br />

Madurai District Collector, MS Sangeetha, told&nbsp;media that the injured were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital in the city. Talking to ANI, she said, "Today early morning at 5:30 am there was a fire accident in the coach which was halted here at Madurai railway station...They were pilgrims and&nbsp;were travelling from Uttar Pradesh. The fire started this morning when they tried to make coffee on the gas stove. Rescue operation is underway."</p>

<p>An ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh would be paid to each of the family of those who were killed.</p>

<p>Southern Railway also announced two help line numbers for information related to the fire incident and causalities.</p>

<p>Dozens of commuters scrambled outside after the windows were destroyed because they were afraid to stay inside.</p>

<p>The Mirror was informed by one of the terrified British passengers who was stranded inside the carriage that the carriages started to fill with smoke as the doors would not open.</p>

<p>According to Jake Sharp, who spoke to the Mirror, the only reason people were able to flee was because of the presence of workers on the station who were able to break windows with their tools.</p>

<p>They claimed that the atmosphere inside the carriages was "turning into hysteria" as they filled with smoke and the driver failed to provide any information, leaving the terrified crowds in the dark as they watched other passengers exit the train from the opposite platform and leave the station.</p>

<p>"There was a smell of smoke on the train. The train went down about five carriages into the tunnel and stopped, the train on the opposite side pulled in and people were running to get off the platform," sharp said.</p>

<p>Later, British Transport Police confirmed that a faulty train was probably to blame for the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It tweeted: "We received a report of a faulty train at #ClaphamCommon shortly before 6pm this evening, and we are aware of a video showing passengers trying to leave the train.&nbsp;The issue is believed to have been caused by brake dust which can often be confused with burning."</p>

<p>There was no sign of a fire, according to the London Fire Brigade, who confirmed this to the Mirror.</p>

<p>A spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a report of smoke issuing from a train at Clapham Common Underground Station this evening (May 5).</p>
