Monsoon Updates: Mumbai schools, colleges to reopen; Raigad under red alert

Despite continuous heavy rains the last few days, The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stated that educational institutions in Mumbai will remain open on Friday, July 26. The decision comes after weather conditions in the financial capital alleviated, allowing the city to return to normal routine.
On July 25, heavy rains disrupted traffic and train services, causing inconvenience to travellers. The flight operations were also halted as incessant rains and strong winds reduced the visibility.
The BMC announced that the weather conditions in Mumbai are normal at the moment, "The weather and rainfall in Mumbai are normal at present, allowing life in the metropolitan city to proceed smoothly. As a result, all schools and colleges in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) area will remain open on a regular basis tomorrow, Friday, 26th July 2024."

An orange alert is issued for Mumbai on July 26, and for Saturday. Regarding the weather conditions in the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a press release stating, "Isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely over ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during July 25-27 and in Konkan & Goa on 25 and 26 July and Gujarat region on 25th July."
In the last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Thursday, Mumbai recorded 44 mm of rain in the city, while 89 mm was observed in the Western suburbs and 90 mm in the Eastern suburbs.

Red alert issued in Raigad
Raigad is still under red alert due to severe weather conditions. The authorities have orderedschools and colleges to remain closed in the region. An orange alert has been issued for Raigad for July 27.
According to a Times of India report, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reviewed the situation in the region on Thursday. He spoke to Raigad collector to make sure support is provided to people affected by floods.

Heavy rains lash Pune
In Pune, at least four people lost their lives due to rain-related incidents. Severe weather conditions have been causing disruptions leading to authorities declaring a school holiday on Friday in Bhor, Maval, Velha, Mulshi, Ambedgaon, Haveli, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Junnar tehsils. According to IMD data, the city recorded 114 mm of rain in 24 hours until 8:30 am on Thursday.
