
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on Monday (June 10) announced the portfolios assigned to ministers a day after their swearing-in ceremony at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Key ministries in the portfolio were allotted to senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders. For instance, Home Affairs went to Amit Shah, Defence to Rajnath Singh, External Affairs to S Jaishankar, Road Transport to Nitin Gadkari and Finance to Nirmala Sitharaman.
This time around, BJP chief JP Nadda has also been given a berth in the cabinet, as union health minister.
Before the allocation, it was speculated that the BJP would also reserve some portfolios for its allies as it requires their support to form a coalition government.
Telugu Desam Party, a key National Democratic Alliance member, managed to bag the Union Civil Aviation ministry, with its Ram Mohan Naidu in charge. Another key NDA ally Janata Dal (United) got the Panchayati Raj ministry, with Rajiv Ranjan Singh aka Lalan Singh at the helm.
In total, the government has 30 ministers in the union cabinet. Additionally, the Union Council of ministers has five miinisters of state with independent charge and 36 ministers of state.
Meanwhile, PM Modi has also been given charge of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy; Department of Space, all important policy issues and all other portfolios not allocated to any minister.
Ahead of the portfolio allocation and the official beginning of the Modi 3.0 administration,PM Modi called up former India president Pratibha Patil, former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Deve Gowda to seek their blessings.
