Adidas drops Bella Hadid from ad campaign following major criticism, issues apology

Sportwear brand Adidas has dropped supermodel Bella Hadid, a vocal pro-Palestinian, from an advertising campaign after a major controversy erupted over the reference to the 1972 Munich Olympics.
The renowned footwear company scrapped its new ad campaign promoting a re-relaunch of classic sneakers from the 1972 Munich Olympics following a major criticism from Israel.
Adidas apology
Adidas said it would be "revising the remainder of the campaign" with immediate effect.
"We are conscious that connections have been made to tragic historical events -- though these are completely unintentional and we apologise for any upset or distress caused," the company said in a statement following major backlash.

On Monday (July15), Adidas' new adcampaign featuringBella Hadidwas released. The poster had a pro-Palestine supermodel promoting a relaunch ofshoes from the 1972 Munich Olympics. For those who don't know, in the year 1972, the MunichOlympics was marred by an attack bya Palestinian terrorist group, thatkilled 11 Israeli athletes and coachesat the Munich games.
Soon after the poster featuring Bella wearing the classic range of shoes appeared, netizens were quick to question the German sportswear company's decision to feature the supermodel in the campaign.

Adidas' new ad campaigngarnered a lot of backlash frompro-Israeli groups, whoquestioned the German shoe brand over its decision to feature the American model Bella Hadid to represent the shoe that had a connection with theMunich massacre.
The official social media account of the State of Israel wrote in a post on X, “Guess who the face of [Adidas’] campaign is? Bella Hadid, a half-Palestinian model who has a history of spreading antisemitism and calling for violence against Israelis and Jews.”
Calling the ad ''egregious error'', the pro-Israel American Jewish Committee said, "For Adidas to pick a vocal anti-Israel model to recall this dark Olympics is either a massive oversight or intentionally inflammatory. Neither is acceptable."
“We call on Adidas to address this egregious error," it added.
