Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly feels replacing Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as the ODI skipper is the right call taken by the selector. The move from the BCCI has made it clear that the board is thinking about the future as Rohit as well as Virat Kohli's careers reach near completion. The duo have been in the set-up for long and play only in ODIs now after retiring from T20Is last year and Test cricket earlier this year. The upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 could be their final tournament but Ganguly feels they have to stay match-fit to make a case for selection.
Ganguly wants Rohit-Kohli to play domestic cricket
Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Ganguly said it was a 'fair call' to replace Rohit as ODI skipper. "Somewhere down the line, I feel that it’s a fair call. Rohit can keep playing and in the meantime, you keep grooming a young captain. So, I really don’t see a problem in that," he said as reported by news agency PTI.Also Read - Mandhana overtakes ODIs' 1st double centurion to break THIS W-ODIs recordOn the topic of their future in the team, Ganguly opined: "Whatever opportunity they get, they have to play domestic cricket. The Indian cricket team is all set to face the West Indies in the second Test match as they look to complete a clean sweep against the Caribbeans. However, one eye will also be on the World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27) as Shubman Gill and Co look to maintain momentum. Currently sitting third, India will have important fixtures, but where would they lie as the Delhi Test match could have a significant impact. So here are all permutations explained of what the WTC table would look like once the latest contest concludes, as the two-time runners-up occupy third spot with a win PCT of 55.56 in six matches.
Scenario 1: India win
In case India win the Delhi Test, Gill and Co will have a win percentage of 61.90 as their record will read , four wins, one draw and two defeats. Harshit Rana's stocks has risen quite a lot in the recent times. From bowling KKR to victory in IPL 2024 final against SunRisers Hyderabad to making his debut on Australia Test tour - the pacer is now somewhat an all-format bowler for India, having made his debut in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. Former India spinner Ravi Ashwin, however, isn't impressed with the pacer's selection across formats at all. Weeks after former Indian Test ace Ravichandran Ashwin confirmed his BBL 2025 participation - becoming the first high-profile player from the country to feature in this T20 league, Aussie bowling great Mitchell Starc put his name in the mix too. The left-arm quick committed to representing Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League after an 11-year hiatus, subject to his fitness following the home Ashes that concludes in the first week of January. The BBL 2025 will take place from December 14 to January 26. Like the past two seasons, Starc signed up for the Sixers as a supplementary player. However, this time around, his T20I retirement announcement opens the gate for him to feature in the latter half of the tournament. Weeks after former Indian Test ace Ravichandran Ashwin confirmed his BBL 2025 participation - becoming the first high-profile player from the country to feature in this T20 league, Aussie bowling great Mitchell Starc put his name in the mix too. The BBL 2025 will take place from December 14 to January 26. Like the past two seasons, Starc signed up for the Sixers as a supplementary player. However, this time around, his T20I retirement announcement opens the gate for him to feature in the latter half of the tournament. In BBL, each franchise has two supplementary spots to fill, allowing them to sign contracted Cricket Australia players with limited availability, without replacing anyone from the selected 18-man squad.
