A 24-year-old Indian student from Telangana drowned while swimming with friends in a Toronto lake on his birthday. Praneeth, originally from Meerpet, Telangana, had come to Canada for his Master’s degree and was celebrating his birthday when the tragedy occurred.
On Sunday (September 15) morning, Praneeth went swimming but did not return. His father, A. Ravi, reported that local authorities were alerted, and rescue teams took over 10 hours to reach the lake. Praneeth’s body was found later that evening, according to media reports.
The family was informed of the incident on Monday through a friend of Praneeth’s brother. They are now working with local authorities and friends in Canada to arrange for the repatriation of his body.
Praneeth had moved to Canada in 2019 for his studies, followed by his elder brother in 2022. The grieving family is requesting government assistance to bring Praneeth’s body back to India.
The father said that it was atragic irony that his son’s birthday celebration became a day of mourning. “Both along with other friends visited the lake to celebrate the birthday of Praneeth on Saturday. On Sunday, they went swimming. While everyone returned, the younger one
(Praneeth) did not," the victim's father told reporters.
Earlier in July, another Indian student, Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, studying at Trine University, drowned at Barbervilley Falls in Albany, according to the Indian Consulate General in New York.
