In a strange incident, a woman learnt acupuncture with the help of online videos in southeastern China, and when she tried to practice that knowledge on one of her patients, it led to his death.

The woman performed self-learnt acupuncture on the man, which led to the inducement of heart failure and killed him, reported the South China Morning Post.

The man, who has been identified with the surname Li, was not well and sought help from the woman who lived in his village in Baoying County, Yangzhou in Jiangsu province.

The woman, identified as Wang, was believed to have great acupuncture skills in the village, and hence, she was paid 500 yuan (US$70) for the treatment by Li.

What happened to the man during acupuncture sessions?

Li was attending the final session when he faced extreme discomfort, and even after attempts were made by Wang to make him stand and walk around, he died, as reported by Zhu Yuting while speaking to Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation.

Zhu Yuting is the First Prosecution Department of the People’s Procuratorate of Baoying County's assistant prosecutor.

“While he was walking, his face suddenly turned black, his legs weakened, and he collapsed on the floor," he added.

Li was taken to the hospital, but the doctors declared him dead. In the investigations, it was found that Wang had no formal acupuncture training.

The woman had learned acupuncture by watching online videos and gained “clinical experience” by practising the skill on herself and her husband.

In a forensic report, it was stated that Li diedof acute heart failure, which was triggered by the acupuncture treatment that had exacerbated the man's pre-existing health condition.

Wang faced accusations of illegal medical practice and had to compensate the family of the victim. She was also sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Reacting to the case, a social media user said, “How dare she practise acupuncture without a doctor’s licence? One dares to perform acupuncture, and the other dares to let her do it. Terrifying.”

“Her husband must truly love her to let her practise on him,” another person wrote.

“She killed him. If everyone could learn to treat patients after a few months of self-study, who would bother with exams and formal education?” stated a third user.
