Indian coffee shop worker arrested for hiding phone in bathroom to secretly record women

The police in southern India's Bengaluru city have arrested a 23-year-old employee of a Third Wave Coffee outlet for allegedly placing a mobile phone in the women’s washroom to secretly record videos.
The accused, identified as Manoj, a resident of Guttahalli in Bengaluru and originally from Shivamogga, was arrested after a female customer discovered the smartphone. The device had been hidden inside a dustbin in the restroom and was found in recording mode, positioned to capture footage of the toilet area.
The customer immediately alerted the management, who rushed to assist her. Upon investigation, it was found that the phone belonged to Manoj, who had been employed at the café for the past six months. The management terminated Manoj from his position following the incident.
The incident came to light on Saturday, (August 10, after a social media post about it began circulating online. Basundhara (@gangsofcinepur) shared details of the episode in an Instagram story.
"I was at a @thirdwavecoffeeindia outlet in Bengaluru this morning, and this is what happened: A woman found a phone in the washroom, hidden in the dustbin, with video recording on for about 2 hours, facing the toilet seat. It was on flight mode so that it makes no sound, and was carefully hidden in the dustbin bag which had a hole made in it so that only the camera is exposed," read the post.

Following the social media outcry, Third Wave Coffee's official account on X (formerly Twitter) responded to state that the accused person had been fired. "We regret the unfortunate incident at our BEL Road outlet in Bengaluru and want to emphasise that such actions are absolutely unacceptable at Third Wave Coffee. We acted swiftly to address the situation by immediately terminating the person & ensuring the safety of our customers," the company stated.
The police have detained Manoj under Section 77 (voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act. The mobile phone has been confiscated as evidence, and further investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the act, according to a police official.
