Chinese man inhales cockroach in sleep, insect remains lodged in airway for three days

In a shocking incident, a Chinese man recently remained for three days with a cockroach lodged in his throat after inhaling it mistakenly while asleep.
The 58-year-old man visited the Hainan Medical University after suffering from yellow phlegm, constant cough and a weird odour in his mouth for three days, reported Chinese news portalHi News.
How did the doctor detect the cockroach?
Deputy Chief Physician of the Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Department, Dr Lin Ling, was informed that the patient felt like something crawled inside his nostril while he was sleeping, after which the cough started. However, the doctor did not think much about it.

The man had earlier visited an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist who failed to find anything in the upper respiratory tract, which left Dr Ling more puzzled.

He then decided to carry out a chest CT scan of the man and found a shadow in the "posterior basal region of the right lower lobe," which indicated the lodging of a foreign item. He then suggested bronchoscopy to the patient.
How surgery to remove the cockroach was carried out?
The doctor performed a preoperative bronchoscopy to check for any “contraindications” after which the surgery was carried out the next day, during which Ling found that there was something that had wings in the bronchial tubes and was wrapped with phlegm, which was revealed it to be the cockroach.

"During the operation the next day, I clearly saw something with wings in the bronchus. The foreign body was wrapped in a lot of phlegm. After sucking out the surrounding phlegm, the foreign body was exposed. It was a cockroach. At the same time, the secretions around the cockroach were repeatedly washed until they were completely cleaned out. After the operation, the patient felt very relaxed and felt very good. The cough and yellow phlegm were reduced, and there was still a little bit of odour," said Dr Lin Ling, while speaking to Seehua.com.
After the surgery, the patient's condition improved but in a test, it was found that phlegm was infected with Clostridium perfringens, due to which he was administered targeted medication and expectorant. It took him five days to recover and get discharged from the hospital.
