A temple in the southern Indian state of Kerala has taken a revolutionary step by introducing a robot elephant to do religious rituals. This move towards holding religious events in a "cruelty-free manner" comes after years of concerns by animal activists. As per a BBC report, the mechanical robot has been donated to the Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur district by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and actress Parvathy Thiruvothu. The robot, which is made of an iron frame, is 11 feet tall and weighs 800 kg. The initiative is reportedly part of a pledge to stop using live animals for festivities.

Animal welfare organisations have for years flagged the "cruel" treatment temple animals face. Just last week, the Centre for Research on Animal Rights wrote to Kerala's chief minister regarding the increasing mortality of captive elephants in the state.

February 10 marked the second anniversary of China's ambitious Tianwen 1 mission — which also happens to be the nation's first interplanetary mission. Amid the celebration, one voice remained silent, that of China's Zhurong Mars rover, which was sent to the surface of the red planet as part of Beijing's Tianwen 1 mission. The Chinese rover has been in "hibernation" for months. It was supposed to wake up back in December of last year. However, almost two months later, its slumber still continues. Last month, a report expressed hope that Zhurong would come out of its sleep, but recent images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show that it hasn't changed its position for five months.

A fresh survey of Japan's territory has yielded 7,000 new islands. As per Kyodo News, after the Japanese government's first official survey of its territorial waters since 1987, the official number of Japan's islands is expected to double from 6,852 to 14,125, with the addition of 7,272 new islands.

The new survey which was conducted by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan will not increase the nation's territory. Rather, it would, as per the NY Post, give officials a more accurate picture of Japan's territory.

Why did Japan conduct this survey after more than 30 years?

This, as per Kyodo News, was apparently spurred by a member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. In December 2021, the party member told the nation's Parliament that there was a need for an accurate understanding of the number of islands because the data was old and not updated. According to them, it was an "important administrative matter that is related to the national interest."

As per Lifestyle Asia, the survey actually detected over 100,000 islands. However, only those with a circumference of 100 metres or higher were taken into account.

Now, the Japanese government will soon come up with more accurate figures of the country's terrain. The latest number of islands will also have to be updated on all official documents and textbooks, etc. As per the current estimates, Japan, a country with an estimated population of around 124,840,000, has a land mass of around 146,000 square miles.

In Japan, a country regularly subjected to volcanic activity and extreme weather, the discovery of new islands isn't that surprising; previously, geographers have reported the formation of new islands and the disappearance of others.

India have been on a roll on the opening day of the second Test, in New Delhi, versus Australia. After being asked to bowl first, India accounted for three scalps in the first session. While they chipped in with regular wickets post the lunch break, opener Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb stitched a vital 59-run fifth-wicket stand. Just when Khawaja was reaching the 100-run mark, he was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja with KL Rahul taking a one-handed stunner.

Talking about the delivery, Khawaja went for a reverse sweep against Jadeja. He, however, couldn't get the desired connection and the ball went straight to square leg position, where Rahul dived towards his right and pulled off a one-handed stunner. As a result, Khawaja was on his knees and in complete disbelief as he was deprived of a hundred. Here's the video:

In recent days, ChatGPT has been everywhere. People have used it to write valentine's day poems for their beaus, used it for their assignments, scholarly papers and in a very surprising twist, even used it to come up with potential bio-weapons. But amid all the fuss around this Artificial Intelligence powered chat, a section of the internet has also pointed to a bias this alleged "woke" chatbot holds. Several users have taken to social media sites to shine the spotlight on what Daily Mail calls ChatGPT's "distinctly liberal viewpoint." Apparently, the chatbot would rather let millions die due to a nuclear attack than use a racial slur. This doesn't seem like a bad thing, but as per tech genius, Twitter CEO Elon Musk, this is concerning. Confused? Here's what happened.

A Twitter user, Aaron Sibarium, who is a reporter, and a podcaster, posed to the chatbot a moral dilemma. He painted a scenario where a person held in their hand the power to save millions from a nuclear attack but to do this; they have to use a racial slur.

Researchers develop 'male pill', an oral contraceptive that successfully stops sperm in its track

The little tuxedo-wearing penguins of today were once huge. Don't believe us? Well, a new study has revealed this amazing bit of information. The flightless bird that today, on average, weighs 22 to 45 kilogrammes, was once a whopping 154 to 159 kg; this makes it thrice the weight of the Emperor Penguin, the largest member of the species today. The now-extinct penguin species, called Kumimanu fordycei or K fordycei, inhabited New Zealand about 57 million years ago, which means they existed a few years after dinosaurs were wiped off the face of this planet. The findings by the international team of researchers have been published in the Journal of Paleontology.

The fossil of this penguin and another species were discovered a few years back, between 2016 and 2017. They were among the 57 million-year-old beach boulders in North Otago, on New Zealand's South Island.

There's nothing scarier than when fiction turns into reality. The moment an imagination born in the dark recesses of a mind turns into the hard truth, could be the biggest nightmare. What if we were to tell you that the scary nightmare shown on the hit TV show 'Last of us' could become our reality? Speaking to DailyMail, mycologists have revealed that the storyline might actually hold some truth.

For those of us who haven't seen the show, it paints a picture of an apocalyptic world, where a mind-controlling fungus, due to climate change, crosses the species' barrier; from ants to humans. What ensues is scary chaos.

The internet is abuzz with mentions of Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) a.k.a., the green comet, which on Wednesday could be seen with the naked eye. As per NASA, the comet paid our planet a visit after a good 50,000 years. It was a rare feast for stargazers and astronomers alike as people around the globe witnessed the astronomical event. Watch | WION Fineprint: Rare Green comet visible from Earth after 50,000 years It was a one-in-a-million sight — in a very literal sense — as estimates say that the next possible sighting won't happen for millions of years. The comet passed just 26 million miles (or 42 million kilometres) from Earth. Also read | James Webb Space Telescope found water ice in the rings of a distant asteroid For those of us who were otherwise occupied or plain lazy to go out and try to spot the comet, some stargazers have managed to capture videos and images of the amazing sight. These captures are all over social media. Let's take a look at a few of them: c/2022 e3 (ZTF), which has not been seen since the Homo Sapiens, will be at its highest point 58° N @ 9:46pm (EST) and will disappear 30° N @ 5:46am. How young is too young for social media exposure? Here's what a US health expert says

English singer-songwriter Harry Styles, whose musical career began in 2010 as a solo contestant on 'The X Factor', performed in Los Angeles on Thursday. And, like most of his concerts, this one too had an 'oops moment', which went viral on social media. The singer was left red-faced as he suffered a major wardrobe malfunction mid-performance in front of several celebrities, including his first crush Jennifer Aniston.

The 28-year-old's trousers split in the middle during the concert, which was also attended by Kylie Jenner, Trevor Noah and Ellen DeGeneres. The awkward incident occurred when he was singing his hit song 'Music for a Sushi Restaurant'.

In the now-viral clips, Styles can be seen going down on his knees before making a shocked face to the crowd as he realised his pants had split. He quickly covered the rip with his hands and started walking backwards before apologising to the audience sitting in the front row.

"My trousers ripped. I feel I must apologise to a certain few of you right down in the front there. I mean, this is a family show," the former One Direction member said.

Following its landing, it conducted a range of scientific and exploration activities before retreating into a so-called hibernation or dormant state to survive the barren planet’s winter, during which, as per space.com, temperatures can fall down to minus 195 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 125 degrees Celsius).

It went to sleep on May 18 of last year.

What conditions are needed for it to wake up?

Talking to reporters in September 2022, Jia Yang, a Tianwen 1 mission deputy chief designer, revealed that Zhurong would wake up by itself when two conditions are met: it can generate energy greater than 140 watts and the planet’s temperature, or rather the region where the rover is, reaches the somewhat warmer, 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius).

'Super exciting' find: Researchers discover four species of dinosaurs, including a potentially new one

Dinosaurs inhabited this planet millions of years ago and in the last 200 or so years, humanity has found much evidence of the mighty beasts. You would think that given that the very first evidence of dinosaurs was found in the early 1600s, we would know almost everything there is to know about them.

However, that's far from the truth: we are still finding surprising and fascinating discoveries that add to our knowledge. For example, a scientist recently spotted an extremely rare find that tells us more about what these beasts ate; this time it's a mammal on the menu.

In the first such find of the 21st century Hans Larsson, a professor of biology at McGill University’s Redpath Museum in Montreal while visiting a museum collection in China, spotted a mammal's foot preserved inside the fossilised guts of a Microraptor zhaoianus.

This is only the 21st known example of a fossilised dinosaur and its last meal. The fossil was discovered in the early 2000s in Liaoning in northeastern China.

The Microraptor zhaoianus was a small, up to three metres long feathered therapod, i.e. a small dinosaur that walked on two legs.

"At first, I couldn’t believe it. There was a tiny rodent-like mammal foot about a centimetre (0.4 inches) long perfectly preserved inside a Microraptor skeleton," said Larsson, as per a CNN report.

Image courtesy: Microraptor zhaoianus/Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology

What makes the discovery so amazing is that previous fossilised specimens of the species showed proof of them consuming fish, birds and lizards. However, "this new find adds a small mammal to their diet, suggesting these dinosaurs were opportunistic and not picky eaters,” says Larrson.

The research that has been published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology talks of generalist predators like foxes and crows as the stabilisers of today's ecosystems. It adds that the recently uncovered evidence may prove that Microraptor zhaoianus and other dinosaurs from the therapod family, which included the famed Tyrannosaurus rex, may have served a similar function back when the mighty beasts roamed the planet.
