Smith’s promotion to top order also means that Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris will have to wait for their turn to get into the Test team. Harris was backed by Warner to succeed him while Bancroft has been in excellent touch in Sheffield Shield.

AUS vs WI: Matthew Renshaw gets Test nod after David Warner's retirement; Steve Smith to lead in ODIs

With David Warner retiring from Tests, following Australia's home Test series versus Pakistan, the opener's slot is up for grabs. Pat Cummins & Co. have not decided on the spot but there isn't a significant gap for their next red-ball assignment, i.e. a two-match series versus West Indies Down Under from Jan 17. Ahead of Warner's farewell Test, there was a lot of talk in the Australian cricket fraternity regarding who can take over from him. Many names have cropped up, such as Cameron Green, Cameron Bancroft, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Harris, Matt Renshaw, etc.

During the final Test versus Pakistan, at the SCG, Sydney, Steve Smith also expressed his interest in being promoted as an opener. While Cummins, after the end of the series, didn't react very keenly to Smith's offer, now Usman Khawaja has also opened up on whether Smith should move up the order.

'Can't sacrifice someone who is the second-greatest ever Test batsman at No. 4'

Khawaja was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au, "I say it's a specialist position in brackets, but anyone who can bat in the top four can open. I just wouldn't want to sacrifice someone who is in my opinion the second-greatest ever Test batsman off the position that he's been batting in for so long. The beauty of Steve Smith is he's a beautiful No. 4 batsman. He can bat against pace. He's really good against spin."

Recently, former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden also reacted to the prospect of Smith becoming an opener. Speaking to Sydney Morning Herald, the veteran said, “It’s just not going to happen in my opinion. He’s commanded so much respect in the game that we should all listen to what he has to say, but I equally think that’s not the way the Australian cricket team management will go. It certainly doesn’t sound like the way Pat will go."

Hayden, a veteran of 103 Tests, further added, “I just can’t see how strategically that [Smith opening] is going to work for Cricket Australia. They will need someone more concrete than that. When you look at the success over the last two years of this Test team, it’s been based on a very solid foundation. It’s been such a key structure – that number one to four set in stone has been gold for Cricket Australia."

Smith has 9,514 runs in 105 Tests, at an average of 58.01 with 32 tons and 40 fifties. At No. 4, he averages 61.50 with 19 hundreds and 26 half-centuries with a total of 5,966 runs. He has never opened the innings in the purest format of the game.

He is a beautiful No. 4 batter: Usman Khawaja cautions against promoting Steve Smith as opener

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has heaped praise on Steve Smith as the national side searches for the successor of David Warner who recently called time on his illustrious Test and ODI career. Smith, a former Australia captain, is touted to replace Warner as the opener in the Test side with plenty of competition for the now-vacant role. Clarke has given his full backing to the 34-year-old and thinks he could be the number one Test batter in 12 months.

Clarke backs Smith to shine

"If he [Smith] wants to open the batting and they give him the chance, he'll be the No. 1 Test opener within 12 months. He's that good a player. If you can bat at three you can bat anywhere in the order. Technically he's good enough, lets the ball go well, he's got a great eye, got beautiful hands,” Clarke told ESPN's Around The Wicket show.

After 112 Matches for Australia in the red-ball format, Warner bid adieu with 26 hundreds while scoring 8786 runs. He had a best of unbeaten 335 runs which came in the Adelaide Test in November 2019. Warner’s departure has left the Australian selectors with a good headache to have as they try to find his successor.

According to Clarke, Smith could be the best alternative to have in the side despite having the likes of Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw as specialist openers. However, with Smith already present and having one of the best records for the Aussies at the moment, Clarke thinks he is the ideal candidate to succeed him.

AUS vs WI: Can’t see how Steve Smith opening is going to work, says former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne has backed Steve Smith to replace David Warner as new opener in Test cricket. There has been a long discussion going for new Australian test opener on after Warner's retirement post Test series against Pakistan. While many players are in contention to replace Warner, Labuschagne says Smith has 'beautiful technique' to face the new red ball.

“There’s probably no one you want out there more,” said Labuschagne on Smith's contention as reported in the Indian Express. “He averages 67 at four, 62 at three, 58 at five. I’m sure if we go down that path and give it to him, he’s going to average in the 60s opening," added the Aussie batter.

Labuschagne made the comments after Smith remarked on ABC Radio that: "I’m actually happy to go up the top."

Explaining the reasoning behind backing Smith for the opener's slot, Labuschagne said: “It (moving ball on a green pitch) could be one that gets him out and gets his beans going, out (to bat) straightaway, ball swinging around and nipping around, but he’s got a beautiful technique to combat any type of bowling.”

Smith has also expressed his desire to open the batting in Tests to coach Andrew McDonald who also confirmed and said at a post-match conference: "He’s mentioned it throughout the last couple of weeks. He’s put his view forward, and we will consider all options."

McDonald, however, is wary of tinkering the balance of the side, saying: "Steve at [number] three or four is pretty appetising also. You’ve got to make sure you’re not removing the strengths of the team in the search to fill a gap also, so there’s a balance within that."

Labuschagne made the comments after Smith remarked on ABC Radio that: "I’m actually happy to go up the top." Also Read: Former India pacer lashes out at women skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for remarks post loss in 2nd T20I vs Australia Explaining the reasoning behind backing Smith for the opener's slot, Labuschagne said: “It (moving ball on a green pitch) could be one that gets him out and gets his beans going, out (to bat) straightaway, ball swinging around and nipping around, but he’s got a beautiful technique to combat any type of bowling.” Smith has also expressed his desire to open the batting in Tests to coach Andrew McDonald who also confirmed and said at a post-match conference: "He’s mentioned it throughout the last couple of weeks. He’s put his view forward, and we will consider all options." McDonald, however, is wary of tinkering the balance of the side, saying: "Steve at [number] three or four is pretty appetising also. You’ve got to make sure you’re not removing the strengths of the team in the search to fill a gap also, so there’s a balance within that." There are a few other players who are in contention to replace Warner in Tests including Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw, Marcus Harris and Cameron Green.

Marnus Labuschagne backs Steve Smith to replace David Warner as opener in Tests for Australia

Australia skipper Pat Cummins is determined not to reshuffle his batting line-up as Australia search for a new opener in the team. Saturday’s (Jan 6) win against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was the last dance for veteran batter David Warner as he bid farewell to the red-ball format. His departure has left the side with a vacant opener’s slot as Australia look to fill the void. However, Cummins has urged not to change the batting order of Steve Smith, who has been taunted by many to play the opener’s role.

"I'm pretty happy with [Smith's] output at No. 4. Obviously Marnus [Labuschagne], Smudge [Smith], Trav [Head] and [Mitchell] Marsh have been pretty impressive at Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6. So first instinct isn't probably to disrupt that,” Cummins said in the post-match after win over Pakistan.

With the 37-year-old Warner retired, Australia have few notable options to replace the southpaw with Cameron Green and Smith urged to change their batting position. Green has been in and out of the side and is yet to cement his place in the Playing XI, however, Warner’s departure could open the gates for him.

Pat Cummins to avoid batting reshuffle after Warner’s retirement, says ‘I’m pretty happy with Smith at No 4’

Australia veteran Steve Smith is to replace opener David Warner at the top order after the conclusion of the ongoing Sydney Test. A modern-day great in the whites, Smith has batted in the middle order, averaging above 58 in 104 Tests.

However, with Warner retiring from Tests (alongside ODIs), Australia has several candidates to pick from – Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, Matthew Renshaw and even Cameron Green. With Smith showing interest, the selectors, team management and Pat Cummins (captain) have a good headache to take care of.

Speaking to ABC Grandstand after the third day’s play in Sydney, Smith confirmed he is interested in taking up the vacant spot once Warner leaves.

"I'm actually happy to go up the top," Smith said. "I'm pretty keen if that's what they want to do. I'm sure the selectors and Ron [Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Cummins] will have a chat after this game, but yeah, I'm certainly interested for sure."

While Saim Ayub was the highest scorer in the second innings for Pakistan, with 33 from 53 balls, star batter Babar Azam scored 23.

Boxing Day Test: Australia ahead of Pakistan after Mitchell Marsh-Steve Smith rescue act on day 3

Ahead of Australia's home summer, which kicks off with a three-match Test series versus Pakistan starting on Dec 14, there have been some speculations regarding Steve Smith's retirement. Smith has rubbished all such claims and stated that he remains focussed on achieving more glory for Australia. Smith was part of the Pat Cummins-led Australia team that won the ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India.

Speaking ahead of the Test series against Pakistan, in Perth, Smith told Foxsports.com.au, "I really just don’t like to look too far ahead. Aus vs Pak: Former captain Steve Smith opens up on retirement speculation ahead of Perth Test

Compounding Australia's selection problems, cricketer Steve Smith has revealed that he is battling another bout of vertigo ahead of the crucial World Cup encounter against Afghanistan. The Australian star said he had been experiencing the symptoms for the last couple of days.

On the eve of the match, Smith gave several media interviews despite his obvious discomfort and hoped to be fit in time for the match.

“I’ve had a bit of vertigo stuff the last day or so...not feeling great. It’s just been a bit annoying, so hopefully I can get through training today and be all good. It’s not a nice place to be," said Smith.

World Cup 2023: Selection conundrum for Australia as Steve Smith battles vertigo ahead of Afghanistan clash

Australia opener Travis Head might be available for the next ODI World Cup 2023 game against New Zealand on October 28.
Australia humbled the Netherlands by 309 runs in match 24 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Wednesday (Oct 25) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Opting to bat first, Pat Cummins & Co. rode on David Warner's 104, Glenn Maxwell's 44-ball 106 (laced with 9 fours and 8 sixes at 240.91) and fifties from Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschange (62) to post a mammoth 399 for 8. In reply, Scott Edwards & Co. only managed 90 in 21 overs (thanks to Adam Zampa's four-fer) to lose by 309 runs, the biggest-ever World Cup loss by runs. Thus, Australia are now on a roll with three back-to-back wins after defeats in their opening two encounters.

Steve Smith attended the post-win media interaction and was asked about the CWC 2023 edition's current top two teams, i.e. India and South Africa. Rohit Sharma's India and Temba Bavuma-led Proteas have 10 and eight points, respectively, and look set to seal their place in the semi-finals sooner than later. Thus, the right-hander was all praise for India and the Proteas.

While responding to WION's question on India and SA, Smith said, "I think both are playing really good cricket. SA play like we played today. They are trusting their top five batters to go out and build a platform before Klaasen and Miller to smack it at the backend. Obviously, they have played on very good batting surfaces as well, one here (in New Delhi) and two at the Wankhede. India are favourites in the tournament, they are playing very well and are playing at home. They are a very good side."

Meanwhile, Australia, now with a Net Run Rate of +1.142, are also catching up. They remain at the fourth spot, one below New Zealand.

At the post-match presentation, Aussie skipper Cummins said, "Really happy, complete game. To put 400 on board and then defend well, couldn't be happier. Crazy innings. I think we both contributed equally in that hundred partnership (chuckles). Fantastic innings, the cleanest hitting I've seen. We played the style we liked to. Pleased with Smithy getting runs. We were aiming for powerplay wickets, bowled quite well without a lot of luck. Zamps with another four-fer. They (New Zealand) are a really good side.. Big game in Dharamsala. It's the World Cup and we are in a good space, can't wait to get there. (Areas to improve) I don't think we have totally nailed the 50 overs with the bat yet."

Australia will now lock horns with Trans-Tasmanian rivals New Zealand in Dharamsala on Saturday (Oct 28).

'SA are trusting their top five, India are...': Smith lauds in-form teams after Australia thrash Netherlands

The pairing of Steve Smith at three and Marnus Labuschagne at four doesn’t seem to be working the way Australia would have wanted in this World Cup 2023. Although Smith is Australia’s best bet at three and numbers back Marnus’ spot at four, former legend Matthew Hayden feels for the Oz to find a rhythm and break loose, this pair must be separated for good. Hayden called for Cameron Green to open alongside Warner and Marsh to play at three and Smith at four against Pakistan.

With both Smith and Marnus playing the anchor roles, given their similar styles of play, Australia failed to pounce on the chances in the middle overs during the first two matches (against India and South Africa), which they lost.

Against Pakistan, another side with a potent bowling attack, Hayden wants Australia to make an unlikely change to their batting order and crack open the Pakistani attack on the batting-friendly Bengaluru pitch.

"I don't think it does," Hayden told ESPNcricinfo when asked if pairing Smith and Labuschagne together works.

"I don't think they'll change things either. To me, they have got a front anchor out and a back anchor out and the innings goes nowhere because they are both well and truly stable.”

"It's fine to have one stabiliser, I think it's really important to have a mind like Steve Smith at the top of the order when you start to set totals or chase totals, you need that computer mind, but when you have two of them in a row, I think it creates pressure through the top six, so I'd make a change there."

Green at the top, Marsh at 3 vs Pakistan – Hayden

Considering Travis Head will open once he returns to the XI, and Marsh will play at three then anyway, Hayden feels why not make such a change now and play Green at the top, giving him license to play freely and attack from the ball one.

"Give him a licence, Cam Green at the top," Hayden said.

"To me, he's a kid who hasn't necessarily found his tempo in any format of the game, but what we saw here during the IPL is that Mumbai Indians just sent him out and said, kid, just smash it.

"Mitch [Marsh] won't like to come down to three because he's had great success in his ODI career opening, but soon enough you are going to get [Travis] Head back in there, so ultimately Mitch is going to bat three, so make the change, create the initiative, do something different rather than sit and wait,” Hayden added.

Meanwhile, Australia must win this match against Pakistan to keep their hopes of qualifying for the semis alive.

Pairing of Smith and Marnus not working: Matthew Hayden calls for unlikely change in order ahead of PAK tie

Pat Cummins-led Australia were off to a disastrous start in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Facing the hosts in their tournament opener, Australia lost by six wickets and were then beaten by South Africa by 134 runs in their following game.
"The boxes aren't ticked yet, which as the Australians, aren't a good sign. We haven't been able to pounce on the chances that we should try to hold on. We have to rectify and see how things go by," he further added.

'We put ourselves in a corner': Steve Smith on Australia's horror start in CWC 2023

Well, it is true. They have been very unusual. Very unusual performance by them. It looks like they are lagging in confidence. More than a couple of players are out of form. They need to get back to doing the basics and enjoy their game. It seems they are overthinking at this point.

Well, he has got other people to help him. One of his best mates is Steve Smith. There is David Warner as well. He has got a lot of support. It is just that collectively they need to do some old-fashioned hard work when it comes it comes to the competition.

Dav Whatmore slams Australia's 'unusual' CWC '23 performance, feels 'they are lagging in confidence'

Ace Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja had a commendable outing against Australia in his side’s World Cup opener in Chennai, picking up three for 28 in ten overs, including two maidens. Although spinners accounted for six out of ten Aussie wickets, Jadeja’s twin strike in the 30th over put Australia on the mat on a dry Chepauk pitch. Jadeja, however, picked Steve Smith’s wicket, a moment that proved to be the turning point of the match.

Just when Smith and Marnus Labuschagne looked like taking the game away from India with their playing template, Jadeja bowled a Jaffa, which turned right after hitting the tight spot, cleaning Smith’s off-stump. Smith played the wrong line as he expected the ball to come in with the arm, but with little assistance from the pitch, Jadeja got the breakthrough and India the big wicket of Smith on 46.

World Cup: That wicket was turning point of the match: Ravindra Jadeja opens up on star show against Australia

India’s Ravindra Jadeja has hit the ground running in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 after he dismissed former Australia skipper Steve Smith in a stunning fashion on Sunday (Oct 8). Jadeja, one of the star performers over the years for the Indian team, did not take time to make his presence felt at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where India and Australia opened their World Cup campaigns. Smith’s dismissal came at the wrong time for the Aussies as he and Marnus Labuschagne were building a good partnership.

Smith sent packing home

On the first ball of the 28th over, Jadeja stunned Smith with an outside the leg stump ball that surprised him before his stumps were castled. Smith was left stranded after his dismissal as he did not judge the flight of the ball. For Jadeja’s credit, he played the mind games to get the former skipper out on 46. The wicket also started Australia’s downfall as they would later lose Labuschagne (27) and Alex Carey (0).

Smith’s dismissal paved the way for India to dominate the contest having already dismissed Mitchell Marsh (0). The important contest saw the Men in Blue play with three spinners that included Kuldeep Yadav, Jadeja, and home-favourite Ravichandran Ashwin. WATCH | Ravindra Jadeja sends Steve Smith packing in stunning fashion in ODI World Cup

Australian batter Steve Smith is feeling 'no pain' in his wrist after taking a cortisone injection as he gears up for the three-match ODI series against India ahead of ODI World Cup. Smith is part of both India and World Cup squad for Australia after missing out South Africa ODI series due to wrist injury. The batter had suffered a blow to his wrist during the Lord's Test in Ashes earlier this year and had subsequently missed out on South Africa's white-ball tour.

"I was in a brace for a couple of weeks, just trying to limit the movement, which once I got that off it hadn't really made a big difference to be honest," said Smith to Nine newspapers at an event in Sydney. "Then I got a cortisone in it last Thursday, and that has made a big difference. So I've had a couple of sessions back batting now and it feels pretty normal."

Australia name 15-man squad for CWC '23, Pat Cummins to lead as Nathan Ellis and two others miss out

Former Australia great Michael Hussey has underlined the importance of Steve Smith and Pat Cummins in the side as they bid to win their sixth ODI World Cup in the coming months. According to Hussey, both the players will have to step up for the Aussies if they are to achieve glory at the World Cup. Australia have won the World Cup five times and their most recent achievement came in 2015 in their own backyard.

Hussey underlines importance of Smith, Cummins

“You can’t rely on just one of two key players to win you a World Cup and it’s going to take a collective effort. But I think for Australia to do really well, they need their big guns to really step up and I guess when you think of that, you think of Steve Smith and Pat Cummins,” Hussey said while speaking to the ICC Review channel.

The Aussies will expect a tough fight during the World Cup as they face competition from England, New Zealand, and India to win their sixth World Cup. Hussey also highlighted the importance of other key players like Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa as they could be vital to the team’s success.

“Marsh has been given a great role, batting in the top three now and he is playing with enormous confidence. So, if he gets his confidence up, he can be a really tough man to stop. Adam Zampa could play a big role for Australia throughout the tournament,” Hussey added.

CWC 2023: They need big guns to step up - Michael Hussey underlines Smith, Cummins' importance for Aussies

The extended away winter in England (for the Australian cricketers) was always going to have its repercussions. With six back-to-back Tests, players got worn out, and as a result, two of their star cricketers – Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc have been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa.

While Smith will miss the tour due to the wrist injury, seamer Starc continues to recover from groin soreness. Both are, however, expected to return for the India series and the World Cup 2023 that follows.

While Perth Scorchers' captain Ashton Turner will replace Smith in the T20I squad, World Cup discard Marnus Labuschagne will fill his place in the ODI side. Starc, who just got picked for the ODIs, will get replaced by left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson in the team. The rookie seamer earned his maiden call-up to the senior side (in T20I) following performance-heavy outings in domestic cricket.

Smith, who also returned to the T20I team on the back of stunning shows in the BBL earlier this year and was supposed to open too, is said to be suffering from a tendon injury in his left wrist.

"With the World Cup the priority of the squad, it was determined on advice that it was best for Steve and Mitchell to join the group in India by which time we expect them to be fully fit and available for the Indian ODI series, plus the World Cup warm-up fixture," he added.

Mitchell Marsh to lead new-look Aussie T20I team

Following Aaron Finch’s retirement, Australia didn’t have a T20I captain. Fast forward a few months, the selection committee named all-rounder Mitchell Marsh as the leader of the pack, indicating that he might, after the end of World Cup 2023, take up the captaincy in white-ball formats for Australia, replacing Pat Cummins.

Cummins, however, is set to remain the Test captain.

Meanwhile, with all eyes on the 50-over spectacle later this year, Australia rested the majority of first-team players for the T20Is but recalled a few for the ODIs.

Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc to miss South Africa series due to injuries, Aussies rope in Labuschagne as cover

Ben Stokes-led England beat Australia by 49 runs to win the fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023 on Monday (July 31), at The Oval, London. With this, they managed to end the high-voltage series at a 2-2 stalemate. Pat Cummins & Co. had already gained an unassailable 2-1 lead but had a chance to achieve their first Ashes glory in England since 2001 before Chris Woakes (4 for 50) and Moeen Ali (3 for 76) starred for the home side on the final day.

The day started with Aussie openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja resuming at 135 for no loss, in pursuit of 384. Woakes removed Warner for 60, with a jaffa, before trapping Khawaja for 72. Marnus Labuschagne also departed for 13 before Steve Smith (54) - Travis Head (43) combined and played their strokes to take Australia to lunch without any further damage.

Post the lunch break, rain made its presence felt as proceedings were halted for more than a few hours. Once play resumed, it was all about Moeen's spin and Woakes' accuracy. The duo combined to break Head-Smith's 95-run fourth-wicket stand and Australia soon got reduced to 275 for 7 from 264 for 3. Alex Carey (28) had a lot on his plate to keep the Aussies' hopes alive before the visitors bundled out for 334.

Rain comes to England's rescue

The unpredictable English weather saved Australia from a possible hammering in the fourth and penultimate Test in Manchester. While it enabled them to take an unassailable 2-1 lead, this time the weather disrupted their flow twice during their 384-run chase at The Oval. First, it made its presence felt during the second half of Day Four and returned during the final day when Smith-Head had Australia ahead.

Talking about the fifth Test, England were asked to bat first as Australia dismissed them for 283. It could have been anything less than 200 but the visitors weren't at their best in terms of fielding.
With a 2-2 scoreline, Ashes 2023 ended in a riveting fashion. Every match had its ups and downs, with four of them seeing a constant shift in momentum. Australia edged past England in the series opener in Edgbaston to win by two wickets and took a 2-0 lead with a 43-run win in the second Test at Lord's. Rain comes to England's rescue The unpredictable English weather saved Australia from a possible hammering in the fourth and penultimate Test in Manchester. Cummins & Co. managed to take a slender 12-run lead, courtesy of their lower-order resistance. England beat Australia in Ashes 2023 finale to end high-voltage series at 2-2 stalemate

The ongoing Ashes between Australia and England produced yet another controversial run-out decision during the second day of the fifth Test and England's Stuart Broad is not amused by it at all. The incident involved Steve Smith who went on to add another 29 runs following the decision as Australia secured a slender 12-run lead in the first innings.

As for the play in context, Smith ran for a double in the 78th over of the innings while batting on 42. England substitute George Ealham came running from deep midwicket and fired a rocket throw which Jonny Bairstow collected and dislodged the bail. Smith appeared short of crease despite a full-length dive but the replay suggested a close call. Have a look at the video here:

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad not amused about Steve Smith's 'grey area' run out decision - WATCH

England and Australia locked horns on Day 1 of the fourth and penultimate Test, on Wednesday (July 19), at the Old Trafford, Manchester. With a 2-1 lead, Pat Cummins & Co. kicked off proceedings with an aim to take an unassailable 2-1 lead and win their first away Ashes series since 2001. Ben Stokes-led England opted to bowl first and did well to restrict Australia at 299 for 8 with many Aussie batters getting starts but failing to capitalise on them.

After the end of Day One, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting analysed the day's proceedings and stated that Cummins-led visitors would be disappointed for 'letting a very good opportunity slip'. "I think Australia will be disappointed," Ponting said on Sky Cricket. "They have let a very good opportunity slip. It has been pretty good batting conditions [with the sun out] and their top score is 51," he added.

Talking about the first day's play, England got rid of in-form opener Usman Khawaja (12) early, while the likes of David Warner (32), Marnus Labuschagne (51), Steve Smith (41), Travis Head (48), Mitchell Marsh (51), Cameron Green (16) and Alex Carey (20) got their eyes in but failed to build up. Labuschagne, Australia's No. 3, crossed the 50-run mark for the first time in the ongoing series.

"(From) where we were, and how many guys got themselves in, I think we would be slightly disappointed with no one getting a big score... The ball will be more in their court,” Labuschagne said in the post-match conference on Day One.

On Day Two, on Thursday (July 20), Australia will resume at 299 for 8 with skipper Cummins and Mitchell Starc (23 not out) in the middle. The duo will hope to take the score forward and take Australia to the 350-run mark at least. With England trailing 1-2, they will resort to an attacking style of play to take a sizeable lead and put the Aussies on the back foot.

Steve Smith takes time out ahead of 4th Ashes Test to watch Wimbledon 2023 men's singles semi-finals

Ashes 2023 is still two Tests away from a conclusion. So far, all three Test matches have gone down to the wire. The losing side in each of the three games had a chance to win but somehow finished second. Thus, the five-match series is already one of the greatest series of the 21st century.

Talking about the third Test, at Leeds, Headingley, the match once again saw the momentum shift from one team to the other before Ben Stokes & Co. finally got off the mark in the riveting series. In the series opener, at Edgbaston, England paid the price for some silly mistakes in the end moments before Stokes held out as the lone warrior in pursuit of 371 in the second Test at Lord's.

Nonetheless, the addition of Mark Wood and his raw pace jolted Australia as the home side managed to narrow down the Aussies' lead to 2-1. The fourth and penultimate Test is more than a week away.

RECAP OF THE HEADINGLEY THRILLER

Before we dig into how England won the third Test, let us revisit the match. Opting to bowl first, England rode on Stuart Broad and Wood's early strikes with Australia reeling at 85 for 4. At No. 6, Mitchell Marsh came out to bat along with Travis Head as the duo stitched an impressive 155-run fifth-wicket stand. At 240 for 4, Australia were on course to surpass the 350-run mark.

However, Wood had another brilliant spell up his sleeves as he rattled the Aussies to dismiss them for 263. Wood's 5 for 34 sidelined Marsh's 118, despite it being a highly-impressive knock from a batter on a comeback trail. In reply to Australia's 263, England only managed 237. Pat Cummins' 6 for 68 led to England failing to take a sizeable lead with Stokes (80) being their top-scorer.

While Australia took the lead, they had England on the back foot at 167 for 8. But Stokes' entertaining 80 prevented the Aussies from dictating terms with a healthy lead. In their second essay, Australia never got going and were struggling at 139 for 6 before Head's 77 enabled his side to set a 251-run target.

In reply, England were nervy in their approach. The hosts were 93 for 3 and then reduced to 161 for 5, with Stokes dismissed for 13, but Harry Brook (75) and vital knocks from Chris Woakes (32 not out) and Wood (eight-ball 16 not out) took the English side past the finish line with three wickets in hand.

HOW ENGLAND MANAGED TO KEEP THE ASHES ALIVE

Those who watched the game can easily say that Wood's inclusion did the trick for England. Reeling at 2-0, Stokes-Brendon McCullum-led team management dropped James Anderson -- who only accounted for three scalps in the opening two games -- and added Wood to the setup. His addition suddenly brightened England's bowling attack as his relentless pace, bounce and energy fired up the English line-up.

Wood was a speed demon who bowled every ball with the only purpose to take a wicket and not contain runs. He was always in the hunt, setting up the batters with his disciplined line and lengths and making the Aussies dance to his chin music. He was giving it his all. Every spell pumped up the English fans and brought his side back into the contest or put them ahead.

Wood was regularly clocking over 90mph without breaking a sweat. While he is one of England's fastest, it wasn't all about his speed. The 33-year-old bowled straight and kept it full as per the conditions and brought on the short-ball ploy with ease. In addition, his bat did the talking in both innings. Wood lifted England, after lunch on Day 2, with a berserk eight-ball 24 (laced with a four and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 300). He passed on the baton to Stokes before the English captain took his side to 237 all-out courtesy of his stroke-filled 80.

Even on the fourth day, England were 230 for 7 -- chasing 251 -- and two more wickets could have once again opened the game. Nonetheless, that wasn't going to be the case with Wood going bonkers and killing the contest in a jiffy. He produced another entertaining cameo (striking at 200) to take his side home.

A lot has been said and written about England's bazball approach. It was under stern test in the third Test with them trailing 0-2. However, Wood backed the style as his positive energy and gungho approach (with both bat and ball) have eased England's issues to an extent as they now trail 1-2 with two more spicy contests in store.

At the post-match presentation, Wood stated, "Delighted to be here to stand as the Man of the Match. Tried to run in as hard as I can. Stokesy told me to bowl as fast as I could. Things still to work on going into the next game. I was pleased with my 24 off 8. Would be tough going into the next game. The support everywhere we go is amazing, but it's always better in the north, isn't it? Will see I how pull up but will do everything I can to be ready."

Going by Wood's performance and words, Headingley's heroics might have been just a sneak peek and he probably has more to offer in the remaining two Tests.

RECAP OF THE HEADINGLEY THRILLER Before we dig into how England won the third Test, let us revisit the match. Also Read: Ashes 2023: 'Over the moon' Ben Stokes hails trio of Woods, Woakes and Moeen after critical win at Headingley HOW ENGLAND MANAGED TO KEEP THE ASHES ALIVE Those who watched the game can easily say that Wood's inclusion did the trick for England.
