Explaining the reasoning behind backing Smith for the opener's slot, Labuschagne said: “It (moving ball on a green pitch) could be one that gets him out and gets his beans going, out (to bat) straightaway, ball swinging around and nipping around, but he’s got a beautiful technique to combat any type of bowling.”

Smith has also expressed his desire to open the batting in Tests to coach Andrew McDonald who also confirmed and said at a post-match conference: "He’s mentioned it throughout the last couple of weeks. He’s put his view forward, and we will consider all options."

"I think that was the turning moment, you know when you get a wicket like Steve Smith. From there onwards it was not easy to just come in and rotate the strike for the new batter," said Jadeja. "So, I would say that wicket was the turning point,” Jadeja told media persons after the game.

Having played for India and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Jaddu, as most fans call him, is quite familiar with the conditions at Chepauk.&nbsp;His experience of playing at this venue for over a decade helped him reap rewards in the&nbsp;World Cup game against Australia.

“And yeah, it helped me, because I knew the conditions in Chennai. I've been playing here for like 10-11 years, so I know the conditions on this ground. I enjoyed it, and whatever I contribute to the team, I always feel happy,” Jadeja added.

Jadeja picked three crucial wickets of Smith, Labuschagne and keeper-batter Alex Carey and detailed how he planned to trap the Aussies in his spin web.

"When I started the first over, the ball was stopping after falling a little slow. I thought it was the afternoon, it was hot, and the wicket was dry. I thought a stump-line would be better. From here some balls would turn, and some would go straight so it won't be easy for the batsman to line up. This was my plan that I should bowl at the stumps and luckily the ball to Smith turned a little more,” Jadeja added.

Meanwhile, Kohli and KL Rahul’s heroics led India to a famous six-wicket win over Australia in Chennai. While Kohli hit a stunning 85, Rahul scored the winning runs, remaining unbeaten on 97.

The Australian team is currently facing a lot of injury concerns with latest being Travis Head who suffered a hand fracture in the ongoing series against South Africa. With Head now uncertain for the World Cup, Smith could return to his favorite number three slot in the line-up.

"I think I average 55 at three, or something like that, so it's definitely my preferred spot. But I'll do whatever the team needs," he said. "White-ball cricket, you'd love to bat as high as you can, so we'll see what they want to do."

The Aussies will expect a tough fight during the World Cup as they face competition from England, New Zealand, and India to win their sixth World Cup. Hussey also highlighted the importance of other key players like Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa as they could be vital to the team’s success.

“Marsh has been given a great role, batting in the top three now and he is playing with enormous confidence. So, if he gets his confidence up, he can be a really tough man to stop. Adam Zampa could play a big role for Australia throughout the tournament,” Hussey added.

The rookie seamer earned his maiden call-up to the senior side (in T20I) following performance-heavy outings in domestic cricket.

Smith, who also returned to the T20I team on the back of stunning shows in the BBL earlier this year and was supposed to open too, is said to be suffering from a tendon injury in his left wrist.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media, George Bailey said the management decided to rest them considering the workload but ensured the fans the pair would return in time for the India series, starting September 22 in Mohali.

"The compacted Ashes series and the World Test Championship was a heavy load for the group, and we are taking a conservative approach to the build-up to the World Cup," chief selectors George Bailey said.&nbsp;

"With the World Cup the priority of the squad, it was determined on advice that it was best for Steve and Mitchell to join the group in India by which time we expect them to be fully fit and available for the Indian ODI series, plus the World Cup warm-up fixture," he added.

Following Aaron Finch’s retirement, Australia didn’t have a T20I captain. Fast forward a few months, the selection committee named all-rounder Mitchell Marsh as the leader of the pack, indicating that he might, after the end of World Cup 2023, take up the captaincy in white-ball formats for Australia, replacing Pat Cummins.&nbsp;

Cummins, however, is set to remain the Test captain.

Meanwhile, with all eyes on the 50-over spectacle later this year, Australia rested the majority of first-team players for the T20Is but recalled a few for the ODIs.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, England bundled out Australia for 295 in their first innings to end the second day and the two teams will now engage in a one-inning shoot out to come out on top. Steve Smith takes time out ahead of 4th Ashes Test to watch Wimbledon 2023 men's singles semi-finals

Ashes 2023 is still two Tests away from a conclusion. So far, all three Test matches have gone down to the wire. The losing side in each of the three games had a chance to win but somehow finished second. Thus, the five-match series is already one of the greatest series of the 21st century.&nbsp;

Talking about the third Test, at Leeds, Headingley, the match once again saw the momentum shift from one team to the other before Ben Stokes &amp; Co. finally got off the mark in the riveting series. In the series opener, at Edgbaston, England paid the price for some silly mistakes in the end moments before Stokes held out as the&nbsp;lone warrior in&nbsp;pursuit of 371 in the second Test&nbsp;at Lord's.

Nonetheless, the addition of Mark Wood and his raw pace jolted Australia as the home side managed to narrow down the Aussies' lead to 2-1.&nbsp;The fourth and penultimate Test is more than a week away.

<h2>RECAP OF THE HEADINGLEY THRILLER</h2>

Before we dig into how England won the third Test, let us revisit the match. Opting to bowl first, England rode on Stuart Broad and Wood's early strikes with&nbsp;Australia reeling at 85 for 4. At No. 6, Mitchell Marsh came out to bat along with Travis Head as the duo stitched an impressive 155-run fifth-wicket stand. Those who watched the game can easily say that Wood's inclusion did the trick for England. Speaking on the same lines on his YouTube channel, Aakash said much like Kohli, David Warner, a veteran batter, is also going through the same patch,&nbsp;having attained a poor record against England’s Stuart Broad, getting out to him for the record 17th time.

Chopra said Virat, in current form, is out of Fab 4; as a result, it is now just Fab 3.

Australia commenced the second day's play at 339 for 5 and soon got wrapped up for 416 with Steve Smith top-scoring with a fine 110. England started on a strong note and ended the day's play at 278 for 4, scoring at 4.56 per over, with opener Ben Duckett (98) leading the charge though he was unlucky to miss&nbsp;his century.

At 188/1, England were looking to end the day strongly but lost three wickets by the end of proceedings on Thursday (June 29) but will be satisfied with their comeback. After Day 2, former England captain Andrew Strauss opined on England's fightback. He feels the home side are now in a 'very strong position' but 'not ahead of the&nbsp;game'.

Playing his 100th consecutive Test – being the first bowler in Test history to achieve this feat, Lyon is feared to be out of action for an extended period. He said knowing what he brings to the table, Lyon would have been useful on this track in the fourth innings. "It's a huge shame, and I really hope it's not too bad for him. You never want to see anyone go down with an injury. We all wish him the best," said Ben Duckett. "He was going to play a massive part in that fourth innings, he's such a good bowler. It will be interesting to see how they go about it. "If they keep going bumpers with all four bowlers, I think they'll be quite tired by the end of it, especially with back-to-back Tests. Star batsman Steve Smith's unbeaten 85 was the centrepiece of Australia's impressive 339-5 on the opening day of the second Test against England at Lord's on Wednesday.

But off-spinner Joe Root, better known as the number one-ranked batsman in Test cricket, took two wickets in four balls late in the day to check the progress of Ashes-holders Australia, 1-0 up in the five-match series after a thrilling two-wicket win at Edgbaston last week.

Australia were in command at 316-3, despite being sent into bat by England captain Ben Stokes in overcast conditions and on a green tinged-pitch that promised to aid his five-strong pace attack.

But dashing left-hander Travis Head, scoring at better than a run-a-ball, then charged down the pitch only to be beaten by a sharply turning Root delivery with Jonny Bairstow, whose wicketkeeping had proved fallible in Birmingham, completing an excellent stumping.

Head was out for 77 following a stand of 118 with Smith where England were given a taste of their own 'Bazball' medicine.

But three balls later, Australia's 316-4 became 316-5 when all-rounder Cameron Green fell for a duck, slicing Root to James Anderson at mid-off.

At stumps Root, the only spinner in the attack after England dropped Moeen Ali, had figures of 2-19 from eight overs.&nbsp;

Fast bowler Josh Tongue, recalled in place of Moeen, removed Australia left-handed openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner, who made a valuable 66, in a return of 2-88 in 18 overs.

But the day belonged to Australia, with No 3 Marnus Labuschagne, who made a useful 47, telling Sky Sports: "You're going to take that (total) when you get sent in on a wicket that we thought had a fair bit in it."

The match was briefly halted before the second over when two Just Stop Oil protesters ran out of the Grandstand and onto the outfield, sprinkling the environmental pressure group's trademark orange powder on the square but not on the pitch.

Bairstow grabbed one of the demonstrators and carried them off the playing surface, with the other apprehended by stewards.

A third demonstrator was tackled before making it onto the outfield, with the police making three arrests.

<h2>Pope injury scare</h2>

England's aggressive approach had come under scrutiny in Birmingham, but missing several chances was a bigger factor in their defeat.

On Wednesday, Stuart Broad looked to have dismissed Warner, then on 20, yet again in an Ashes clash, only for fourth slip Ollie Pope, who later went off injured with a shoulder injury, to drop a two-handed catch.&nbsp;

Warner cashed in with a 66-ball fifty completed when he pulled Tongue, in just his second Test, for six.

But off what became the last ball before lunch Tongue bowled Khawaja, playing no shot, to end a stand of 73.

Warner also fell to Tongue, bowled between bat and pad by a ball that cut back sharply off the pitch.

England for all Australia's playing and missing, did not help themselves by giving away 36 runs in extras, including 12 no-balls.

Smith stuck Stuart Broad through the covers for two fours off successive balls then successfully overturned a caught-behind decision off the next delivery on his way to a 102-ball fifty.

Stokes, who has been troubled by a longstanding knee injury, brought himself on but only bowled three wicketless overs.

Smith and Labuschagne, until recently the world's two top-ranked Test batsmen, had managed just 35 runs between them across four innings at Edgbaston.

The former Aussie captain along with Pat Cummins was seen at his fluent best, having missed&nbsp;entertaining the crowd at Edgbaston. The hundred also saw him go level with Steve Waugh for most hundreds by an Australian. Currently, only Ricky Ponting with 41 has reached the triple-figure mark on more occasions than him.

In terms of innings, Smith is the fastest to reach 32 hundreds, having taken only 174 innings, two less than Ponting while Sachin Tendulkar needed 179 innings to reach the tally.

After the end of the opening day, former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed concern for Ben Stokes &amp; Co. as hosts trail the five-match series 1-0 after losing the series opener, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, by two wickets.

"England can get back into it but I worry about it. They are going to have to be sharper in the field, I will be intrigued to see how they cope," Vaughan said on BBC's Test Match Special.
