Since ending his 18-month century drought with a classy 101 at the Gabba, the Australian star has been on a roll, reaching three figures in three of his next four matches.
Following his latest masterclass—131 runs in the second Test against Sri Lanka—Smith was asked what sparked this run of form.
“I just felt like I was batting nicely and getting some time in the middle. Once you get that one big score, you start reading the bowlers better and feel more comfortable,” Smith spoke post-match. “For me, that moment was the Gabba. From there, I’ve felt at ease, facing more balls and getting into rhythm. It’s really about trusting the process and knowing the game ebbs and flows.”

Australia cricket team could be handed a major blow in their preparations for the Champions Trophy 2025 as skipper Pat Cummins could be unfit due to an ankle injury. Speaking on Wednesday (Feb 5), head coach Andrew McDonald insisted that Cummins is “heavily unlikely to feature for Australia having missed the Sri Lanka tour as well. According to McDonald, Steve Smith and Travis Head are the leading contenders to lead the Aussies in absence of Cummins as they try to win their second CT title.

The Aussie skipper has been in brilliant form in recent weeks having led his nation to a Test series win over India and helping reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final. While he is yet to be officially ruled out, Cricket Australia (CA) is already looking at a captaincy alternative.

Steve Smith stood unbeaten on 104 after crossing 10,000 Test runs and helped Australia pummel Sri Lanka alongside fellow centurion Usman Khawaja on day one of the opening Test on Wednesday.
Australia reached 330-2 in 81.1 overs when rain stopped play for the day after the tourists elected to bat first in Galle at the start of the two-match series.
Left-handed opener Khawaja, on 147, and skipper Smith put on an unbeaten stand of 195 to thwart the opposition attack in two wicketless afternoon sessions.
Milestone man Smith got three runs off spinner Nishan Peiris to reach his third ton in four matches as he took off his baggy green and raised his bat to acknowledge the crowd's cheers.

Smith took the crease in the first session with 9,999 runs and calmly nudged his very first delivery to mid-on for a single off Prabath Jayasuriya.
He became the 15th batsman to 10,000 Test runs and only the fourth Australian to achieve the feat after Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting.
Smith got an early reprieve in his knock when Jayasuriya grassed a sharp return catch in the same over, a chance Sri Lanka would come to rue.
He made the hosts pay dearly, crafting a sublime 35th Test century to reaffirm his stature as one of Australia's rock in the middle order.
Khawaja reached his 16th Test hundred—his maiden ton on Sri Lankan soil—after a 17-match drought since his Ashes century in June 2023.
The ton came with a flick off fast bowler Asitha Fernando to the fine leg boundary, a stroke brimming with elegance and relief.
The 38-year-old had a few heart-in-mouth moments when a couple of edges fell just short of fielders and a reprieve on 74 when he nicked Jayasuriya to the keeper, but Sri Lanka chose not to review the on-field decision.
Another opportunity slipped through Sri Lanka's fingers with Smith on 90 as Kusal Mendis, slow to react behind the stumps, spilled a bat-pad chance.
Earlier, Travis Head smashed 57 off 40 balls, including 10 fours and one six, to put Sri Lanka on the back foot right away.
Head, who replaced 19-year-old Sam Konstas as an opener for the Test, put on 92 runs with fellow left-hander Khawaja.
The hosts finally found a breakthrough when Head misfired an ambitious charge against Jayasuriya only to find the long-on fielder.
Jeffrey Vandersay had Marnus Labuschagne caught at first slip for 20 with his left-arm spin.
With three specialist spinners in the Australian XI, the tourists hold all the aces, especially with the pitch expected to deteriorate as the game progresses.

Cricket Sports: Smith became the fourth Australian and 15th player overall to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He is the third fastest to reach the landmark in terms of innings played

Australian batter Steve Smith on Wednesday (Jan 29) joined the elite 10,000-run club in Test cricket during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Smith became the fourth Australian and 15th player overall to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Smith was dismissed at 9,999 runs in the SCG Test against India. Steve Smith is the third fastest to reach the landmark in terms of innings played. The record is held by Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, and Kumar Sangakkara, who reached the landmark in 195 innings. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting scored 10,000 runs in 196 innings, while Smith accomplished the feat in his 205 innings. Smith is only the sixth player to reach the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket while leading a team. Notably, Smith was named Australia captain for the Sri Lanka tour after Pat Cummins pulled out of the series. The other players who reached the landmark as captains of the team are Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, and Alastair Cook. Meanwhile, Australia find themselves on top in the first Test at Galle. Electing to bat, Australia came out all guns blazing and left Sri Lanka reeling. The move to promote Travis Head at the top worked wonders as the destructive southpaw slammed a fiery fifty. He was dismissed for 57 in 40 balls. Marnus Labuschagne did not get going and was dismissed for 20, however, Usman Khawaja held one end to take Australia to 145-2 at Llunchon Day 1. Australia have not won a series in Sri Lanka in 14 years. ‘Nice to tick that off': Smith after 10,000 Test runs milestone After becoming only the fourth Australian to cross the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket on day one of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, Steve Smith felt “nice to tick that off” with a flick wide of mid-on off Prabath Jayasuriya. “Nice to tick that off,” Smith told official broadcaster Channel Seven at the stroke of lunch. Allan Border, one of the players Smith now shares this milestone with, praised his determination and unique style. “He’s not the bloke where you say to your son ‘here’s a technique you’ve got to follow,’ but it’s worked for him, and that’s a good sign that you know your game. He’s done it so well. There’s prettier players, but not many who’ve got that record,” Border was quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald. Border went on to compare Smith to the greats of the game, saying, “I’m a huge fan of (Sachin) Tendulkar and (Brian) Lara – they were phenomenally good cricketers, but Steve is definitely up with that lot, for sure.” Smith has compiled his runs at an average of over 55, with Kumar Sangakkara the only batter beyond the 10,000 figure with a better return (57.40). Among active players, only Joe Root's tally of 12,972 Test runs is higher than Smith's. The right-hander came to bat at 137/2 in the opening session and hit a single to mid-on off Prabath Jayasuriya, earning applause from the crowd, before sharing a hug with his batting partner, Usman Khawaja. Australia’s Steve Smith joins 10,000 Test runs club

Australia received a massive boost in their quest to conquer Sri Lanka at their home with the left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann cleared of his right thumb injury ahead of the away two-match Test series starting later this week. Kuhnemann was among the doubtful starters for the series, with the stand-in captain Steve Smith also suffering an injury scare in the lead-up to the last series of this WTC cycle.
The left-arm spinner, who made his Test debut during the away BGT two years ago, fractured the thumb of his non-bowling hand during Brisbane Heat’s Big Bash League clash last week, undergoing surgery for the same.
This injury also forced him to miss Australia’s ICC training camp at the ICC academy in Dubai, and instead, he stayed back to allow healing to his injured thumb. The spinner will link up with the touring Australian team in Sri Lanka, with the remainder of the squad leaving from Dubai on Friday (Jan 24).
Meanwhile, Kuhnemann has since resumed bowling and was in action at the Allan Border Field, where Cricket Australia XI is hosting the England Lions side, Cricket Australia confirmed.

"I am feeling really good and very grateful how it progressed last week," Kuhnemann said in a chat with News Corp. "I stopped the painkillers a few days ago. There is not much pain at all anymore.
"If anything, I think it can make you more confident because you know the finger is covered. The surgeon has put a nail in it, and if anything (the finger) is probably more stable than it was before.
"I have had balls hit back at me a lot harder, and I have been fine. It was one of those freak things where it hit the exact spot it had to cause damage,” he continued.
Kuhnemann will have an elite company of veteran spinner Nathan Lyon, with Todd Murphy and uncapped Corner Connolly adding options on the Sri Lankan tour.

Boost for Australia as Test specialist cleared of injury for Sri Lanka Tests

Steve Smith injured his elbow in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) raising concerns in the touring Australian camp ahead of their two Tests against Sri Lanka starting January 29. Smith will be the stand-in captain, with the regular skipper Pat Cummins missing the action for personal reasons. Smith, who has a history of elbow issues, suffered an injury to his right elbow while throwing during the Sydney Sixers’ washed-out clash against the Sydney Thunder on Friday (Jan 17).
The elbow injury has delayed Smith’s departure for the team’s training camp in Dubai as he seeks advice from a specialist; however, a Cricket Australia statement confirms Smith will hopefully leave later this week.

Meanwhile, with no Cummins around and should Smith fail to recover in time for the two Tests against Sri Lanka, Test vice-captain Travis Head will don the skipper’s hat for the first time.
Besides, Australia also pinned their hopes on left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann to play some role during the two-match series despite undergoing the knife on his fractured right thumb following the injury against Hobart Hurricanes in BBL last week.
"He will remain in Australia while the surgical wound heals further," CA said. "He is planned to resume bowling this week with a view to joining the squad in Sri Lanka if he continues to progress well."

Cummins seeks advice on ankle injury

Cummins will be away for the Sri Lanka series but will return to lead the potent 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. During the recently concluded Test series against India at home, Cummins suffered soreness in his ankle, with earlier reports suggesting that he could miss the showpiece event starting next month.
Per a CA statement, Cummins will seek specialist advice, needing some time to recover from increasing soreness in his ankle ahead of the tournament.
"He will seek specialist rehabilitation advice this week and is likely to require a period of physical preparation and recovery," CA said. "The [national selection panel] will continue to monitor Cummins' recovery leading into the Champions Trophy."

Steve Smith, stand-in captain for Sri Lanka Tests, suffers injury scare

The ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) has seen some of the best catches in cricket history. However, with each passing game, the standards just keep getting high. On Wednesday (Jan 15), Australian fielder, Lachlan Shaw pulled off an arduous effort to deny a six to the opposition.
In the contest between Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers, the team from Sydney was bowling first and Lachlan Shaw saved a six on the boundary ropes, and his effort was certainly the best in the history.
The incident took place on the first ball of the 11th over in the Adelaide Strikers' innings. Strikers’ batter, Alex Ross slog swept a tossed up delivery towards the deep square leg region. Have a look at the video below:

Smith’s form a bonus for Australia

Smith’s position in the Test team and his form remained under scrutiny in the lead-up to the home series against India. Though rain interruptions led to a draw in Brisbane, Smith’s second hundred of the series – a magnificent one in the Boxing Day Test (at the MCG), helped Australia win the match and take a 2-1 lead.
Smith scored 314 runs in nine innings, averaging 34.89.

Australia tour of Sri Lanka: Steve Smith to lead in Pat Cummins' absence; Nathan McSweeney returns

Steve Smith might take up captaincy duties for the upcoming two Tests against Sri Lanka starting January 29, per the latest reports. With regular Test skipper Pat Cummins likely to miss the last Test series of the current WTC cycle for the birth of his second child, Smith stays ahead in the race to lead the Test team.
Australia is currently involved in the ongoing fifth and final BGT Test against India at the SCG, leading the five-match series 2-1. Should they win this match, the hosts would qualify for the WTC Final 2025, playing South Africa in the summit clash at the Lord’s in June this year.

However, should they draw or lose to India, conceding the lead and the chance of winning back the coveted BGT trophy - last won ten years ago, Australia must win at least one of the two matches against Sri Lanka to ensure direct qualification.
According to a Code Sports report, Smith, who previously led Australia regularly until the infamous sandpaper gate in 2018, might wear the captain’s hat again. Though that instance saw him facing a ban for 12 months and being stripped from captaincy duties, Smith has led in the past, mostly filing up for Cummins’ absence.
Smith last led Australia during the previous BGT (in India) after Cummins missed the final two Tests following his mother’s demise.

Cummins on why he will miss Sri Lanka Tests

Cummins' mother’s death reshaped his priorities in life, as he explains what’s more important for him.
"In some ways it really makes you focus in on what I think is important. It's family, its enjoyment, it's trying to find joy in life and I think that's been a slight shift in the way I've approached playing and touring and it's just given me that real decluttering mindset,” Cummins said in a chat with the Daily Telegraph at the launch of the Pink Test against India.
"When you go out you just want to play well, and of course, there's going to be pressure, but you don't want to forget that what mum and dad used to say to us every time we went and played as kids, was to go and enjoy it. Try your best, but make sure you enjoy it. I try and remind myself of that every time I go on a tour or play.
"Whatever you choose to do there's always an opportunity cost. And I think in the last few years that's probably rung true. That is when you go away on a tour you are missing out on maybe family time or moments. That's a deliberate choice so make sure you are making the most of that tour or that game if that makes sense,” the Test captain added.
Meanwhile, Cummins was on top of India with his tactical changes on day one of the SCG Test, accounting for India’s another low first-inning score in this BGT.
He even picked two wickets of Washington Sundar and Captain Jasprit Bumrah in the first innings.

Steve Smith to captain Australia for Sri Lanka Tests – Report

Jasprit Bumrah, remember the name!
The ace Indian quick has been on a rampage Down Under since day one of this tour, picking 29 wickets in four contested matches thus far. On day four of the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the iconic MCG, Bumrah triggered Australia’s collapse after lunch, picking three wickets in two overs, including bagging his 200th Test wicket in Travis Head on just one.
He first removed opener Sam Konstas, bowled on eight before making merry in the first over his second spell, picking up dangerous Head and under-firing Mitchell Marsh.
While Head’s wicket, caught on the square leg on one, was his 200th Test scalp - becoming the fourth quickest to reach the milestone regarding balls bowled (8484), Marsh’s dismissal was a testament to his status as perhaps the best bowler of his time.

BGT, MCG Test: Bumrah becomes quickest Indian to 200 Test wickets

Steve Smith might have broken plenty of records with his Boxing Day hundred against India in the ongoing BGT but admitted enjoying teenager Sam Konstas’ debut outing more, especially for how he remained unfazed against the world’s best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.
Konstas’ reverse ramps to the ace Indian seamer for a six and a few fours already fetched him countless praises, with Smith going one step ahead, claiming he nearly had a heart attack seeing Sam smashing Bumrah for fun.

However, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland frustrated India with a little 19-run partnership for the last wicket. Though there were a few close calls favouring the Aussies, Bumrah returned to pick his 25th wicket of the series by removing Lyon trapped in the front.

Steve Smith hit his 11th Test hundred against India, the most by any batter in Tests. His 140 is his fifth ton at the MCG and 18th in Australia.

Steve Smith completed his record 34th Test hundred against India early on day two of the Boxing Day BGT Test at the iconic MCG, powering the host to 474 in the first innings. Smith notched up his 11th three-digit plus score against India in Tests, becoming the batter with the most centuries in this format against the Indian Team, surpassing England’s Joe Root (10). 11 Test 100s for Steve Smith against India! Smith and Cummins added 112 runs for the seventh wicket before Jadeja returned to dismiss the skipper on 49. By then, Smith had completed his record hundred at the 'G', his 11th against India in Tests – the most by any batter against them in this format. Australia crossed the 400-mark at lunch with seven batters back in the hut. BGT, MCG Test: Smith’s 34th Test ton puts Australia ahead early on day 2

India’s batting coach Abhishek Nayar has made a major revelation on the team’s batting position with skipper Rohit Sharma set to return to the opening spot in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Nayar, after Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test spoke to the broadcasters and media as he confirmed the news of Rohit’s batting position in the Boxing Day Test against Australia. This will mean KL Rahul is likely to drop into the middle order.

Nayar confirms Rohit’s position

“Rohit will come up in the order and more likely than not he will open the innings for us,” Nayar said to the reporters on Thursday.
“I feel for Shubman but he understands. He’s not really dropped, just couldn’t find his way in the combination,” Nayar said.
The Indian skipper skipped the opening Test match in Perth due to paternity leave before returning to the side for the pink-ball contest in Adelaide. However, an impressive show with the bat from Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul in the opener’s position saw Rohit drop to the middle-order, a position he has been familiar with.
However, Jaiswal and Rahul have been inconsistent in their roles at the top, so the Indian team management has now decided to move the latter into the middle order.

Smith nears massive milestone

For what he brings to the table in this format with an average of over 56 (56.44), Smith is perhaps the best Test batter of the past decade. His accolades speak for himself, and even though his reflexes seem to catch up with time, he stands tall as one of the best in his country.

Having started the day at 52/4, the Indian batter made a slow start to Day 4 before the key moment arrived on the third ball of the 43rd over. Batting on 84 of 138 balls, an away-going delivery of Nathan Lyon surprised the Indian batter, taking a vital edge of his bat. Standing at first slip, Smith dived on his right to take a low catch and dismiss Rahul.

The brilliant catch was applauded by everyone at Gabba as all the players rushed to the former skipper.

The wicket came after skipper Rohit Sharma once again failed with the bat. He was dismissed for 10, highlighting his poor run with the bat.

Smith clutches one-handed stunner

Rain to save Gabba Test for India?

At the time of writing, rain again played spoilsport as India were 167/6 and still trailed by 278 runs in the first innings.
India still need 78 runs to avoid follow-on while there are only a maximum of five sessions remaining in the match. As things stand, India’s chances of winning the Test match are all but over with draw being the best outcome.
The result will also have bearings on India and Australia’s World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification with a draw doing no favours to the former.

BGT 2024-25: Steve Smith equals Joe Root's record vs India and creates history for Australia with Gabba ton

Brisbane, Australia
Travis Head hit his second hundred in two innings against India on day two of the Gabba Test in Brisbane, while Steve Smith notched his first in 18 months to power Australia past the 400-run-mark in the first innings on Sunday (Dec 15). For India, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah picked a five-for, his second of this BGT. At stumps on day two, Australia's scorecard read 405 for seven.
After losing close to 80 overs on day one due to rain interruption, the action began at the usual time on day two, with the weather forecast favouring playing conditions. Team India began proceedings by removing both openers inside the first half an hour, with Jasprit Bumrah accounting for both.

Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith played out the first hour before Mohammed Siraj’s mind games helped India get another breakthrough. During the 33rd over, Siraj ran up to Marnus in his follow-through and switched the bails to break Labuschagne’s concentration, a trick that worked wonders, as he departed in the next over to Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Smith, Head crush India’s momentum

Coming off a decisive hundred in the first innings in Adelaide, Travis Head continued from where he left. He played out the first few balls before opening his arms like before.
The left-handed batter smoked each bowler for a convincing boundary, including hitting Bumrah for the overhead six. Though he never let Ravindra Jadeja settle by whacking him to all parts of the ground, Head’s approach against Siraj, with whom he shared a heated moment in the second Test, kept the crowd on its feet.

Soon after, Head completed his hundred, his second of this BGT and ninth overall in Tests, piling pressure on the Indian Team.
On the other hand, Smith ended his century drought with a fantastic hundred, his first in 18 months. His 101 off 190 balls sees him equal Joe Root’s record for most Test tons against India (10) and second-most overall (33) for Australia in this format.
However, Bumrah brought India back into the game with three quick wickets, including removing Smith (101) and Head (152) alongside Mitchell Marsh on just five.

Oh that is class from Travis Head 👏#AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/rqr2hzSCpd — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) December 15, 2024 × Soon after, Head completed his hundred, his second of this BGT and ninth overall in Tests, piling pressure on the Indian Team. Steve Smith hasn't had a good run in 2024. The right-hander has averaged 23.20 in seven Tests with only a solitary in 2024. Ahead of the third Test between India and Australia, of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), at The Gabba, Brisbane, skipper Pat Cummins has backed Smith to regain form. Smith, who has scores of 0, 17 and 2 in the ongoing series, will be desperate for a big score and help Australia take a 2-1 lead.

Cummins said in the pre-match presser, "You look at his record, stats would suggest (runs) are not far around the corner. In particular this year, he's looking fantastic in the nets, just looking really sharp, looking like he's got plenty of time. doing all the right things like he always does."

Ahead of the crucial Brisbane tie, Cummins emphasised on the need to win at home, especially to keep their hopes of playing the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final next year. "Winning in Australia is a matter of pride. These are our home conditions, and we've grown up playing here. To succeed in the World Test Championship, you need to win all your home series and capitalise on opportunities abroad. That's the standard we've set for ourselves," the pacer added.

BGT: 'Big score's around the corner', Pat Cummins backs Steve Smith to regain form in Brisbane Test vs India

Steve Smith continued with his poor form in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) after he was scalped by Jasprit Bumrah in the first session of Day 2 in the ongoing pink-ball Test in Adelaide. Playing on Saturday (Dec 7) at the Adelaide Oval, Bumrah got the better of Smith for the second time in the series, this time via a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. The former Australia skipper had earlier been dismissed for a golden duck by Bumrah in the first innings of the Perth Test.

On the first ball of the 41st over that was going down the leg was nicked by Smith as it made its path away from the wicketkeeper. The Aussie star also became the Indian vice-captain’s third wicket of the innings and he pushed for a comeback.

At the time of writing, Australia were 168/4 with Marnus Labuschagne top-scoring with 64. He was dismissed by Nitish Reddy with Yashasvi Jaiswal taking a superb catch at the gully. Australia trailed by 12 runs with Travis Head (32) and Mitchell March (0) in the middle.

Can India mount a comeback?

With Australia destined to take the first innings lead, India will need a healthy contribution from their batters if they are to mount a comeback. Considering India’s recent batting woes, batters like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and others will need to come good. The team will also rely heavily on the services of Jaiswal and KL Rahul who impressed in the second innings of the Perth Test.

BGT 2024/25: Jasprit Bumrah stuns Steve Smith yet again as Rishabh Pant clutches brilliant catch - WATCH

India seamer Mohammed Siraj picked up two big wickets inside the first session on day four to help India inch closer to drawing first blood in the BGT opener in Perth. Siraj first removed opener, Usman Khawaja, caught by Rishabh Pant off a mistimed pull shot and later accounted for Steve Smith caught behind on 17. Travis Head completed his fifty as Australia's scorecard at lunch read 104 for five.

India began day four needing seven wickets to win the first Test at the Optus Stadium, with Siraj, who removed Aussie captain Pat Cummins late on day three, bagged Khawaja's wicket in his first over of the day. Putting Australia on the back foot right away was the Bumrah-led Indian Team's plan, and they delivered accordingly.

The left-handed Head joined Smith in the middle, opting for a cautious approach to steady Australia’s sinking ship. After minimising the new ball threat, Head attacked the opposition, smashing the pacers all across. He completed his fifty soon after, reviving little hopes of an unlikely turnaround for the hosts.

However, when the pair looked like winning Australia’s only session with the bat in this Test, Siraj struck again with a beauty, removing dangerous batter Smith. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh and Head played out the last few overs before lunch to keep wickets in hand, with two sessions remaining in the day.

What happened in Perth?

The series opener began outstandingly for the hosts, who wrapped up India’s first innings on 150 inside the first two sessions on day one. However, the Indians made a quick turnaround in the match after dismissing Australia on a paltry 104 in their turn. With a 46-run lead, the visitors made the most of the chance, piling up runs at will.

After a colossal 201-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul for the first wicket, India lost five wickets quickly, with their scorecard reading 321 for five at one stage. In the meantime, Jaiswal notched up his fourth Test hundred, hitting a brilliant 161.

Standing at the other end, Virat Kohli returned to form, scoring his 30th Test hundred, his first in this format since July 2023.

Riding on twin tons and a quick-fire unbeaten 38 off 27 balls by Nitish Reddy, India declared their second innings on 487 for six, giving Australia a daunting target of 534.

The hosts began the chase in the worst possible way, losing three wickets inside five overs, with opener Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne departing on single digits.

BGT, Perth Test, Day 4: Mohammed Siraj strikes twice in first session as India inch closer to win

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed star batters Virat Kohli and Steve Smith to come good in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). India and Australia will face each other in a five-match Test series with the World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification on the agenda. However, it is the form of the two star batters concerning the management with Virat going over a year without an international hundred.

Ponting backs Kohli, Smith to come good

“I still think they’ve got plenty of time to find their best,” Ponting told Sydney Morning Herald in an interview. “It might be Smudge’s time actually, after that experiment up the top. He’s back down in his more comfortable spot at No.4, which I was on record saying I don’t think he should have moved, it should have been an opener who played at that stage.”

Both Smith and Kohli have endured a tough last 12 months with bat. Calls for them to be dropped from the squad IS now making rounds. Smith has not scored an international ton since the 2023 Ashes when he got one at Lord’s while Kohli has also been on the slide. All eyes will be on both the players as BGT will have a huge impact on the ratings for the WTC final in June 2025.

For Ponting, things will be difficult to manage as he will have to travel for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction on Sunday despite being part of the commentary team for the Perth Test. Ponting is the head coach of Punjab Kings and will have a big role to play as the franchise retained only two players during the retention window.
