India spinner Ravi Ashwin has revealed that playing with ace Aussie batter Steve Smith in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has helped him decode the batter. The statement comes as the two sides gear up for the Board-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) which starts in about 10 days.

Smith and Ashwin have always been a fascinating contest and the fans would hope for the same this time around as well. While Ashwin admitted that initially, Smith had him, he has been able to figure the Aussie out in recent years.

“Steve Smith is someone that’s fascinating as a player against spin especially,” Ashwin said while talking to 7Cricket ahead of the BGT.

“And sometimes as a bowler when you’re watching a batter go through his process you do identify whether you have him or not. And several times in these years of having played with Steve Smith I’ve felt that he has me. BGT 2024-25: India spinner Ravi Ashwin reveals 'IPL net sessions' helped him figure out Steve Smith

Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey has ended all speculations over Steve Smith’s batting position against India in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar series. Addressing the media ahead of the Pakistan white-ball series starting November 4, Bailey confirmed that Smith will return to his favourite number four position following his brief stint as a Test opener. He also confirmed that all-rounder Cameron Green will miss the marquee series against India.

Smith replaced David Warner at the top following his Test retirement. In his second match as an opener, Smith hit a gritty 91 against West Indies in Brisbane, although the visitors came on top in a famous win. Against New Zealand in the series after that, Smith struggled, scoring just 51 runs in four innings.

Green, who played at number four in Smith’s place, got ruled out of the summer after deciding to opt for the surgery on his back that troubled him lately.

Bailey confirmed that Captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald decided to bring Smith back to number four in Tests.

"Pat, Andrew and Steve Smith had been having ongoing conversations, separate to the untimely injury to Cameron (Green)," Bailey said as quoted by cricket.australia.au. "Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position, and Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back down the order for the summer."

While Australia has three options to choose from in Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw to replace Smith at the top, Sam Konstas’ fireworks in the Sheffield Shield with twin tons have rocketed his chances of bagging his maiden Australia call-up for the India series.

Green to miss India series

On the other hand, a bigger problem lies ahead of the decision-makers in the Australian camp, with whom to replace Green in the playing XI. The lanky all-rounder will undergo lower spine surgery, sidelining him from any on-field cricket for at least six months.

Following lengthy consultations with CA’s medical team over the fortnight after his initial scans in the UK, Green decided to get the titanium cable infused into his lower back to stabilise the stress fracture and prevent future occurrences.

"Cam has a unique defect in an adjacent area to the fracture that is believed to be contributing to the injury," the statement said. "After thorough consultation, it was determined Cameron would benefit from the surgery to stabilise the defect and reduce the risk of future recurrence."

Australia selector George Bailey confirms Steve Smith’s batting position against India; Green ruled out of BGT

Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson thinks that Steve Smith should continue to open in Tests while Cameron Green must bat at number four, keeping the future in mind. The statement comes as Australia prepares to host India for upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar series next month in November.

"Steve Smith made the call to be able to go and open, and I think he should stay there," said Watson on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Tuesday (Oct 8).

"Obviously the safety blanket for him would be moving back to No. 4, but I would love to see him continue to take on the opening spot because he's got the skill to be able to do it," he added.

Smith has scored 171 runs as opener in Tests at an average of 28 with half of those runs coming in one innings against West Indies earlier this year.

As for Cam Green, Watson opined that moving forward he's perfect for the number four position in Tests.

"Cameron Green came in and batted at No. 4 and did a brilliant job," Watson said. "His hundred that he got in New Zealand was something very special and he's the perfect No. 4 candidate now with the future, moving forward."

Australia, however, are sweating over Green's fitness who returned home mid-way from the recent ODI series against England due to soreness in lower back.

Australia are hoping to turn around their fortunes in Tests against India having lost four consecutive series including two series at home as well. The Aussie last won a Test series against India in 2014.

The upcoming series, which consists of five Tests for the first time, starts November 22 in Perth.

Ex-Australia player Shane Watson wants Steve Smith to open & Cam Green at number four in Tests | Here's Why

Australia seems to have run out of options to replace David Warner at the top, especially in Tests, and with the Border-Gavaskar series looming, they are exploring all options available, including replacing Steve Smith with Travis Head. However, the former Australia captain and batting great, Ian Chappell, feels it’s either an extremely desperate ploy or an extraordinarily adventurous move.

Following Warner’s retirement earlier this year, Test giant Steve Smith volunteered to open despite selectors looking for options like Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris. That ploy, however, didn’t pay dividends as Smith fared average against the new ball in limited outings.

With consensus building on the subject, pundits say Smith must return to bat at his usual position at number four, where he scored the bulk of the runs in his career, averaging above 60. Australia would need someone to replace him at the top, with talks of Travis Head being the right man for that position underway.

Although Head has been a star batter for Australia for the past two years, scoring heaps of runs while opening in the shorter formats, he is yet to prove his mettle at the same position in Tests – a format that Chappell calls ‘very different’ from ODIs and T20Is.

“Head opening in Test cricket is based on his unbridled success facing the new ball in both 50-over and T20 cricket. There's no doubt Head, with his ultra-aggressive style, is the ideal player to open in the two short forms of the game. However, Test cricket is an entirely different proposition.”

“Head's promotion to open in Test cricket should be seen as either an extremely desperate ploy or an extraordinarily adventurous move,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

Head might struggle against Bumrah

Head has won his battles against some top bowlers worldwide, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami, but despite that, he is unlikely to bluff their bowlers, given what they bring to the table, Chappell feels.

“One big flaw in the argument for Head to open in Test cricket is the opposition he'll face. If it were a lesser opponent, it might have some merit but a strong Indian attack will be hard to bluff.”

“Any move to open with Head that is designed to unsettle Jasprit Bumrah is asking a lot of the batter. Bumrah, and to a lesser extent, Mohammad Siraj, are unlikely to be battered into altering their attacking mentality.”

“As well as fine fast bowlers, Head is also vulnerable against good off-spin bowling. The wily R Ashwin is unlikely to be panicked by an opponent's ultra-aggressive approach. The argument could be mounted that opening with Head means he'd be more settled facing Ashwin with some runs on the board. On the other hand, a smart opposing captain can utilise the off-spinner with a newish ball,” he continued.

Should Travis Head open against India in Tests? Ian Chappell says NO, explains why

Australia great Steve Smith admits being ‘clueless’ over his batting position against India in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar series Down Under. Since David Warner’s Test retirement earlier this year, Smith volunteered to open, only for him to become the pale shadow of himself at the top of the order. With the five-match Test series against India looming, Smith and the Australian Team are seeking answers to who would open alongside Usman Khawaja.

Though Smith wanted to challenge himself by playing out of his regular position (number four), where he scored most Test runs and hundreds and averaged above 60, his numbers against the new ball suggest a different story.

Khawaja, however, feels Smith is best at batting at number four for Australia.

“I have no idea, there are conversations happening in the background,” Smith said in a chat with reporters, as quoted by Hindustan Times. “Usman, I think said that he likes me down at No.4. I think Marnus has similar thoughts. We will wait and see. I am happy anywhere, I'll bat wherever for the team, but we'll see what happens,” he continued.

With Cameron Green’s latest injury adding worries for the selectors, they have a hefty task to figure out who could open alongside Khawaja if not Smith. Though Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris were a few names discussed ahead of the past summer, the hosts could either pick any one of them or continue with Smith at the top to accommodate Green (when fit) and Mitchell Marsh in the middle order.

Smith awaits Indian challenge

Smith was the Australian captain when Australia last won the BGT (home or away) in 2014/15; having fared against them all this while, Smith knows what challenge awaits them this time. Considering Australia has lost to India twice at home (in 2018/2019 and 2020/2021), they have plenty to play for this time when the series gets underway in Perth on November 22.

Smith feels the five-match Test series gives every player a chance to show up and deliver, restricting them from hiding from anything, which makes it a mouth-watering contest.

“It's great that we are able to play a five-match series against them. You can't really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series. If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It's going to be a wonderful series,” Smith added.

While acknowledging the touring Indian Team’s mettle on the past two occasions, Smith admitted both teams are best in this format, and irrespective of the latest results, both want to qualify for the WTC Final and win it.

“We are probably the two best teams in the world at the moment in Test cricket. We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there. They have been great out here the last couple of times and played some really good cricket. Hopefully, we can turn the tables. It's been 10 years since we last won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. We need to do that this year,” Smith concluded.

‘I have no idea’ - Steve Smith ‘clueless’ over batting position against India in Border-Gavaskar series

Australia coach Andrew McDonald thinks the top six batsmen who finished the last test season are likely to start the much-anticipated five-match series against India later this year, but not necessarily in the same order. Steve Smith moved up from number four to open the batting after the retirement of David Warner midway through last season and McDonald said it was by no means certain he would stay there.

"While we've got an eye to it, we haven't made any firm decisions around that one," McDonald told SEN radio from England on Wednesday. "We've already had some chats in Sydney initially around what we're thinking for the summer, and that goes right down to depth bowling and all those hypotheticals and 'what-ifs' that we always go through.

"Clearly, if we make a shift with Steve Smith, then someone else will have to go to the top. We've seen Cameron Green be really successful at number four as well. So that adds layers to the decision-making. "But nothing is firm and fixed at the moment."

While Smith hardly set the world on fire in his outings as an opener, Green scored 174 not out against New Zealand at number four in the last series of last season.

Regardless of what the selectors decide about whether Smith opens, his place in the side alongside Green, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh looks assured.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Australia coach says top six likely to remain the same for India series

Australia batter Steve Smith says that India's Virat Kohli is 'the most Australian' player among the Indians. The comments come ahead of the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar series in November later this year. India will travel to Australia with an aim to win their third consecutive Test series.

"I believe Virat Kohli is Australian in thoughts and action. The way he gets into a battle, the way he gets into the challenge and tries to get on top of the opposition. He's probably the most Australian of the Indian players, I'd say," Smith said in a video shared by Star Sports on social media platform X.

The Aussie batter, one of the Fab Four, also spoke on his rivalry with the Indian batter and said: "There's no real, you know, I need to beat him or anything like that. 'I need to beat him...,' Aussie Steve Smith on India's Virat Kohli ahead of upcoming Border-Gavaskar series

‘Why fix something that is not broken’- a quote often used in cricket for various contexts seems to come to life in Steve Smith’s case.

A Test veteran averaging beyond 60 batting at number four opened for Australia in the last eight innings. With the India Test series looming, the former batting great Matthew Hayden expressed displeasure over this decision, preferring to watch Smith return to his favourite position in the marquee series.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai, Hayden said he understands George Bailey’s (chief selector) comments on why they preferred Smith over specialists Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw.

While Smith’s highest score batting at the top is 91, his total tally reads 171 runs from eight outings, and Hayden, who opened in Tests all his life, admitted it’s never easy to adapt against the new ball, even for the best of batters.

"The rationale that [national selector] George Bailey gave was correct in so far as that he was choosing his best top six batsmen," Hayden said.

"Now, you can't argue with Steven Smith, he is averaging 65 [57] in Test-match cricket.... 32 Test-match hundreds.

"But, the role of an opening batsman compared to a middle-order batsman is very different. And it didn't take long to discover that when you get into challenging conditions like they faced in the first series outside of Australia, which was in New Zealand, that opening the batting is very difficult," the former batting legend added.

‘Not the right message to send’

Hayden admitted not liking this idea in the first place and adding this doesn’t set a correct example for domestic players either.

"I, personally, as I said at the time, was on record saying that I didn't like changing," Hayden added. "I think it's crazy to think that you have the world's best-in-class batter in a certain position. And then you change to a completely different position. For a few reasons, I think that's crazy. Firstly, why? Such a gun in that position, such a coveted player.

"And then it also is not a great nod to the first-class set-up, which is very much in the Australian culture, been driving great results towards key roles, be that any one of the roles - wicketkeeping, batting, spinners, fast bowlers, opening batters. So the [batting positions of] one, two and three is a category, which needs to be protected, in my opinion. It sets up play."

Lacks security

Hayden didn’t mince his words in admitting how massive a void David Warner’s absence has left and if Smith, in any capacity, could fill it.

"For the first time, it doesn't feel as secure. David Warner gave a great service to Australian cricket. He gave a service that was extremely competitive and wonderfully dynamic.

"He really took that legacy that I'd created through the 2000s to a new level, strike rates in excess of 80 [70] and gave great momentum to the top order, which otherwise is quite a conservative, very good, but very conservative batting line-up. So I think he's an enormous loss in terms of how do you replace him,” Hayden continued.

Steve Smith’s Test batting position worries Matthew Hayden as India threat looms

Australia batter Steve Smith has denied any plans of retirement from international cricket and instead is hopeful of playing in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics as well. The LA 2028 games will see cricket returning to the fold in the shortest format, that is, T20s.

"I don't have any plans," said Smith, as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

"I'm just enjoying playing at the moment, I'm pretty relaxed and looking forward to this summer," he added.

The batter also hoped for wearing the Baggy Green at the next Olympics but would have to do a lot for that to happen. The 35-year-old has been ignored in the shortest format by Australia as he was excluded from the recently concluded 2024 T20 World Cup squad.

Smith, however, has signed a fresh three-year deal with Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), which will ensure he plays in the format till 2026-27 at least.

"I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know," he said. "It's a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I've signed on here for three years so it's only another year after that. It would be cool to be part of an Olympics."

Hazlewood desperate to beat India

Josh Hazlewood, who debuted during Australia's victorious 2014-15 home series win against India, recently claimed that Pat Cummins & Co. are desperate to settle scores versus the Asian giants.

In the 2014/15 series, Australia beat India 2-0. Since then, they have lost all four series (two in India, two at home). India beat Australia in a Test series on Australian soil for the first time in 2018/19 and replicated that feat, sans many key players, in 2020/21.

'Looking forward to...,' Australia batter Steve Smith offers update on retirement from international cricket

Australia Test opener Usman Khawaja likes batting with veteran batter Steve Smith but prefers to see him come in at number four in Tests, where he averages over 60. Since David Warner announced his retirement, the team management sought his replacement options, with several players, including Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw, discussed. However, Smith raised his hands, volunteering to open in Tests.

Meanwhile, Cameron Green’s name also came up as an option to open alongside Khawaja, but Smith eventually won the race.

“I don’t like waiting to bat, so I thought, why don’t I put my hand up and have a crack-up top? That way, you can get Cameron Green in, and you’re playing your best six batters,” Smith said while speaking with Fox Cricket earlier this year.

Now, with Australia approaching another home summer, considering India is touring this time for five Tests, they would want to have their best players playing at their favourite positions, and Khawaja feels for the hosts to make the most of this chance, Smith must bat at number four and not at the top.

“I’m not sure what the top six is going to be this summer. I’ve always loved Steve Smith batting at No. 4; I haven’t shied away from that. I know Steve Smith can score runs at one, two, three, four, five, or six, but the man averages 60 at four, so my preference has always been Smudge (Steve Smith) at four,” Khawaja said speaking on Fox Cricket.

“I love seeing him come in at No. 4 … you get two wickets, and who do you get walking in? The best batsman in the world. When you put him up to open, I feel like you’re kind of giving them a chance to get at him early,” the left-handed batter added.

Smith must return to number four

Following the Pakistan Tests last year – David Warner’s farewell series in whites, Smith opened with Khawaja against West Indies for the first time. Though he scored a gritty 91 in the second innings of the Adelaide Test, Smith struggled in the remaining three innings.

“Some challenging conditions with the new ball, in particular. So, I would have liked to score a few more runs,” Smith said in a recent chat with Code Sport.

“That’s the game sometimes, but I played pretty well in the second innings at the Gabba where we couldn’t get over the line, unfortunately. It’s just a position to me, so it doesn’t really faze me too much,” Smith continued.

In total, Smith has scored 171 runs in eight innings at the top, averaging 28.50, but at number, he has scored nearly 6000 Test runs, at a whopping average of 61.50.

Unsure of batting order this summer, opener Khawaja wants to see Steve Smith back to number four in Tests

India would want to kick off their T20 World Cup campaign on a winning note at the latest edition of the tournament on Wednesday (June 5). India will start their campaign against Ireland in the T20 World Cup and will look to end their 17-year drought to win the coveted tournament. One player on everyone’s radar will be Virat Kohli who is in red-hot form having won the Orange Cap for scoring most runs in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

Smith backs Virat to flourish with bat

According to former Australia skipper Steve Smith Virat will end as the highest run scorer in the tournament which will see him continue the rich form. Virat scored 741 runs in 15 matches of the IPL and helped his Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) side reach the playoffs. However, those runs could not help his side to its maiden IPL win.

"My top run-getter for this tournament will be Virat Kohli. He is coming off a terrific IPL and he is bringing in some great form and I think he will be the leading run-getter," said Smith while speaking to ICC world feed coverage.

After a 16-hour flight, Virat arrived in New York on Friday evening and rushed to the team hotel to take a rest. The former Indian captain has been in superb form in big tournaments. He was the highest run-scorer in the ODI World Cup back in November.

He was given an extra break after the IPL and was with his family before linking up with the squad. Like the T20 World Cup, Virat had earlier linked up with the Indian team late during the South Africa series in December 2023.

However, for now suspense surrounds what position Virat will play at the T20 World Cup as he is rumoured to open the batting while few have suggested he bat at No.3.

T20 World Cup 2024: Jake Fraser-McGurk, Steve Smith left out of Australia squad; Mitchell Marsh to lead

Australia batter Steve Smith has admitted that it has been challenging for him as a Test opener so far. Smith took the role after David Warner called time in whites for Australia in January earlier this year. Smith, who has nearly 10,000 Test runs, was then promoted up the order to open the batting.

"It's been challenging so far. We've played with some tricky wickets, particularly new-ball wickets that have done quite a bit. It has been challenging. I'd love to sort of turn it around and score some runs up there, that's for sure," Smith told news agency PTI in an interaction.

The Aussie has batted in four matches as an opener and has been able to score just 191 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.50 with a highest score of 91 not out. Smith, however, said that he isn't thinking much about it.

"I'm not reading too much into it. You know, I feel like I've still been batting well," he said while acknowledging that he needs to fix a few technical things.

"A few things I'd like to fix up a little bit technically, but I've had that going throughout my whole career, and it doesn't really matter where I'm at in that respect. We'll wait and see," he added.

Smith also said that the wickets he has opened on have been a bit tricky as well with opposition batters also failing to score runs on them.

"Can't sort of underplay how difficult the wickets have been. A lot of the top orders that we've played against haven't scored a great deal of runs, and it hasn't been until the 30-40 overs-mark that we've seen the wickets get a little bit better and the lower order score some runs,” he added.

Overall, Smith has played 109 matches for Australia with 9,685 runs to his name after starting his career at number nine. He is now considered Australia's one of the best batters ever with an average of 56 in Tests alongside 32 tons and 41 fifties.

Australia batter Steve Smith has admitted that it has been challenging for him as a Test opener so far. Smith took the role after David Warner called time in whites for Australia in January earlier this year.

"It's been challenging so far. We've played with some tricky wickets, particularly new-ball wickets that have done quite a bit. It has been challenging. I'd love to sort of turn it around and score some runs up there, that's for sure," Smith told news agency PTI in an interaction. Australia batter Steve Smith admits 'it has been challenging' for him as Test opener

IPL’s most expensive buy, Mitchell Starc, brought by KKR for INR 24.65 crore, has leaked 100 runs in two matches without picking a wicket thus far this season, and Kolkata Knight Riders fans are not happy with his performance. Besides, social media trolling is adding fuel to the fire.

Irfan Pathan and Steve Smith have come to his defence, saying Starc is yet to find his touch, and once he does that, he will be unbeatable on his day.

Moreover, trolling his numbers (which reads 100 off eight overs) on social media website X, Iceland Cricket wrote, “More expensive than a beer in Iceland.”

Pointing out the reasons behind this, Pathan said on Star Sports, "Starc is at his best when he is swinging the ball in. When that looping swing starts to the right-hand batter, it can be lethal. And I haven’t seen that in the last two games. The head could just be staying on the ball a bit more, or it could just be the pitches, or it could just be getting used to Indian conditions. Once he starts getting that in swing, he will be a bowler to watch out for throughout the IPL."

Starc’s Australian teammate Steve Smith also threw some weight behind him, saying Starc tried something else against the right-handers upfront but missed out on doing what he does best – delivering inswinging deliveries. Mitchell Starc receives backing from legends over horrendous start to IPL 2024

Australian batter Steve Smith heaped praise on Rajasthan Royals (RR) star batter Riyan Parag for his maturity following an impressive 45-ball 84* against Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 9 of IPL 2024, on Thursday (March 28). Being asked to bat first, at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur, RR were in a spot of bother at 36 for 3 but the 22-year-old took his side to a competitive 185 for 5 before Sanju Samson & Co. restricted DC to 173 for 5. Parag ended as the Player-of-the-Match.

Smith credited Parag for resorting to smart cricket and rebuilding the RR innings when they had lost three early wickets. The Assam batter started slowly, scoring a run-a-ball 26, before pressing the accelerator and adding 58 off the next 19 deliveries. His inning was laced with 7 fours and 6 sixes, at 186.67, and he even slammed South African pacer Anrich Nortje for 25 runs off the last over, including 3 fours and 2 sixes. Thus, the former RR captain Smith appreciated Parag's approach following RR's second win in IPL 2024.

Speaking on Star Sports, Smith said, "Yeah, I think he's matured a lot, and I think just the way the innings was constructed, he took the pressure off early by just knocking it around, playing really smart cricket, building a few partnerships after the loss of 3 wickets. And then just set a really strong foundation to go hard at the back end, and when he decided to pull the trigger, he did it to effect and connected with the middle of the bat consistently, getting them up to 185."

He further added, "Just getting back to that last over (on Parag's onslaught versus Nortje), if they (DC) had only given 10 runs it would be a completely different story. The ability to chip one of the best bowlers in the world out of the park changed the whole complexion of the game."

Talking about Parag, he debuted in IPL 2019 and has been part of the RR franchise since then. While he started off positively, he has been criticised a lot for his inconsistency over the years. However, the right-hander has always been backed by the Rajasthan franchise. He has started this year's IPL with a bang, with a 29-ball 43 and unbeaten 84. Many believe this could be his breakthrough season, having also scored a plethora of runs in the domestic circuit.

Talking about Delhi's 186-run chase, Rishabh Pant & Co ended with 173 for 5 with David Warner (34-ball 49) and Tristan Stubbs (23-ball 44) to lose their second straight game.

On the other hand, RR now have two back-to-back wins and are placed second in the points table with four points.

For the first time in IPL history, two modern-day greats – Virat Kohli and Mitchell Starc, will go up against each other when RCB hosts KKR in game 10 of IPL 2024 on Friday (March 29). Having faced each other countless times since Starc’s international debut more than a decade ago, the two giants of world cricket will finally face off in this premier T20 competition. Starc’s national-side teammate, Steve Smith, feels Kohli will be aware of the challenge against his formidable opponent.

The left-arm seamer, who last took on India great during the 2023 World Cup final, where Australia won the contest for the record sixth time, failed to pick his wicket then. However, Starc’s last IPL run came in 2014 and 2015 with the RCB under Kohli's captaincy.

Speaking ahead of another blockbuster tie in IPL 2024, Smith said he is looking forward to watching this mouth-watering clash between Kohli and Starc, saying both must have their plans ready to tackle the other. However, spotting Kohli’s weakness against the incoming ball, mostly via a left-arm seamer, Smith feels Starc would like to take advantage of it.

"I quite like [Starc's] match-up to Virat, the ability to swing the ball back down the line as a lefty," Steve Smith said.

How will Starc get Kohli out?

Detailing further on Starc’s possible plan against Kohli, Smith said Starc loves bringing the new ball back and doing that upfront or getting him nicked off a wobble seam.

However, he also talked about how Virat can attack Starc by just coming down the line to him, disallowing the ball to move enough early on.

"Starcy's going to swing the ball back down the line early on, I'd imagine, and then use the wobble seam to go across him [Kohli], and potentially try and nick him off," Smith said.

"It's going to be a good game, and I'm aware Virat would know how Starc's trying to attack him as well - whether he tries to potentially come down the track [to] just take the swing out of play [we'll see]. It's going to be interesting to see how he counters it,” Smith continued.

Although both are yet to face off in this competition, Starc hasn’t dismissed Kohli in T20s (international and now-defunct Champions League), leaking 47 runs.

IPL 2024: ‘I am interested to see how Virat tackles Starc,’ says Steve Smith on blockbuster RCB v KKR clash

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has backed his bowlers following the mauling they suffered at the hands of SunRisers Hyderabad in an away clash on Wednesday (Mar 28).

SRH slammed the highest innings total in IPL history – 277/3, with three of their batters completing fifties in the blink of a second.

However, Australia legend Steve Smith was perplexed over Pandya’s decision to hold back Jasprit Bumrah during the initial overs when SRH batters were going bonkers.

Mumbai Indians bowlers had a night to forget against SRH, with none other than Bumrah able to restrict the host from thrashing everyone in this marquee clash. While the debutant Kwena Maphaka conceded 66 runs from four overs – most by an overseas bowler in his first IPL game, the spin duo of Shams Mulani and Piyush Chawla leaked 67 runs in four overs combined. Seamer Gerald Coetzee went for 57 runs but picked one wicket of Travis Head on 62 off 24 balls.

However, Pandya, who also conceded over 10 runs per over, going for 46 off his four, admitted the night was tough for bowlers but hailed the batting display on offer by SRH.

He said no matter what, scoring 277 in a T20 game is some effort and should be complemented.

The skipper also backed his bowlers to come good in games to come, admitting the attack was new and that he liked what he saw.

“The wicket was good. I think SRH batted really, really well. It was tough for the bowlers. 277, no matter how good or bad you bowl, if the opposition gets 277 that means they batted very well. We tried as a bowling unit, but couldn't get the breakthroughs. We could have tried a few things, but we have a young bowling attack. I liked what I saw,” Pandya said after MI’s 31-run defeat in Hyderabad.

Pandya’s captaincy baffles Smith

Speaking on Star Sports during SRH’s innings, Smith pointed out Pandya’s mistake, saying that not bringing on their best bowler while Head and Abhishek Sharma were tearing down the MI attack drifted the game away from Mumbai.

Smith said had he been at Pandya’s place, he wouldn’t have waited for the death overs for Bumrah to come and restrict the run flow and instead have brought him earlier to put a full stop on run leakage and pick a wicket.

“I think they missed a trick in bringing Bumrah back in the 13th over. When the ball’s going around like that, you've just got to bring your best bowler back earlier than you would've liked. It's just about adapting on the go. I would've bowled Bumrah out by the 15-16th over to try to get some wickets,” Smith said on Star.

Former Australia and Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Steve Smith has made his choice of 'the complete side' of IPL 2024. While many have named Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as their top favourites, Smith believes Sanju Samson-led RR are the team to look out for in the ongoing edition. Smith, who led the one-time winners Rajasthan in IPL 2020, feels the 2022 finalists have enough firepower to claim their second title this year.

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of RR's home game versus Delhi Capitals (DC) on Thursday (March 28), Smith said, "Home teams are winning at the moment. I am not ready for them to break the trend just yet. They (RR) look the complete team this year. They have got all the bases covered. Their spinners, I'm really keen to watch again. Chahal and Ashwin are outstanding. The two guys up top are potentially the two most destructive in the IPL. If they get going and have an incredible season, they will be hard to beat."

Smith also opined on skipper Samson, who ended as the Player-of-the-Match with an impressive 52-ball 82 in RR's season-opener versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday (March 24).

Over the years, Samson has been a huge name in the IPL and a regular for RR. However, he has had a tendency to start the season with a bang, with his willow, before fading away towards the end.

Smith feels that this could be something which is on Samson's mind but stated that the RR captain looks in a good space at the moment.

The Aussie cricketer added, "He played beautifully, got them the win. He seems to be playing well, looks to be in a very good place. He looks comfortable. He is striking the ball really well. I think his captaincy was outstanding and he would want to continue that form. His seasons in the past have tapered off a bit in the end, and that will be weighing on his mind. To keep that standard up and leading from the front."

RR started IPL 2024 with a 20-run win over Lucknow and will hope to make it two wins in a row on Thursday evening, when they host Rishabh Pant-led DC.

Chahal and Ashwin are outstanding. The two guys up top are potentially the two most destructive in the IPL. If they get going and have an incredible season, they will be hard to beat." Also read: IPL 2024: 'Captain can't go at 120' - Irfan slams Hardik Pandya for his rusty knock in SRH vs MI high-scorer Smith also opined on skipper Samson, who ended as the Player-of-the-Match with an impressive 52-ball 82 in RR's season-opener versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday (March 24). To keep that standard up and leading from the front." RR started IPL 2024 with a 20-run win over Lucknow and will hope to make it two wins in a row on Thursday evening, when they host Rishabh Pant-led DC.

'They look the complete team this year': Steve Smith names THIS side to look out for in IPL 2024

It’s not the first time when the ace India seamer Jasprit Bumrah has turned heads worldwide with his bowling performance. Bumrah made an emphatic return to the Indian Premier League this season, having missed it entirely the last year due to a stress fracture, and picked up three wickets for 13 in his four overs against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Stuart Broad and Steve Smith, two Test greats, applauded Bumrah for his impeccable skill of bowling the toe-breaking yorker and picking a wicket on the same.

Having had a successful run in the lead-up to this tournament, with star performances beginning from the 2023 World Cup, away South Africa tour to the home Test series against England, Bumrah delivered on his return match for MI. He first dismissed GT opener Wriddhiman Saha, clean bowled on a yorker, before accounting for two dangerous batters in Sai Sudharsan and David Miller later in the innings.

IPL 2024: Jasprit Bumrah leaves Stuart Broad, Steve Smith speechless with ruthless spell against GT

Former Australia captain Tim Paine feels Steve Smith opening in Tests gives any opposition the best chance to remove him cheaply, something New Zealand bowlers did in the recently concluded away series. Although Paine admitted that with the ability Smith possesses, the veteran batter could succeed at the new position, he still sounded reluctant to watch Smith continue opening in the longer run.

Australia’s best Test batter since his debut, Smith found tremendous success batting in the middle order, mainly at number four, compiling 32 Test tons at an average reading of 56.97. However, after David Warner retired from Tests early this year, Smith volunteered to take up the vacant spot, with selectors also willing to give him an opportunity.

Playing ahead of the openers in contention like Bancroft, Harris and Renshaw, Smith had to score runs against the new ball in his first assignment against the Kiwis, but he failed, scoring 51 runs across four innings at 12.75. His twin LBW dismissals in the Christchurch Test against the moving ball raised questions on the selectors’ call.

However, with the India series looming (later this year), Paine feels Smith can work on his game, but he doesn’t come across as the threat at the top the way he does in the middle order.

"I look at it, that if I was playing against Australia, where would I prefer Steve Smith to bat? If I'm the opposition, I want him opening the batting," Paine said on ESPN's Around The Wicket.

"I want my best bowlers at their freshest with a brand new ball. I was in that Ashes in 2019 and went to England with him in another one, and when he was at his best batting at four, you just felt he couldn't get out.

"I would love to see him succeed as an opener, I think he can, there's no doubt about that, he's good enough to bat anywhere, but as an opposition player, I want him at the top of the order because that gives me the best chance of getting him out,” Paine added.

Smith ready for India challenge

Having failed to beat India at home on the past two occasions, Australia will be keen on turning the tables around this time. With Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Siraj leading India’s pace attack, Australian batters must be on top of their game to avoid past mistakes.

Paine feels he doesn’t see any change in the batting order for the India Tests.

"I don't think anything changes," Paine said of Australia's batting order.

"[Smith] is probably one of three or four players who has ever played for Australia who can probably do what he's doing at the moment. He's earned the right, in my opinion, to bat wherever he wants and if he wants, and is driven enough, to be Australia's Test opener, I think he'll make it work, and you'll see him come out next summer and dominate,” he added.

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has said that Steve Smith won't be in 'his playing XI' for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June later this year. Ponting made the comments on the latest ICC Review podcast. The former Aussie skipper, however, acknowledged that having Smith in the squad will have a 'calming influence' on the team.

"You love having guys like him around because of the experience and the calming influence that you can have around a team during a World Cup," said Ponting about Smith.

"But the other thing you always have to be mindful of is what role can he play?

"And I think that's probably been shown the last couple of weeks with the series they just played in New Zealand. Cameron Green's unbeaten 103 (laced with 16 fours) took Australia to 279 for 9 on a pulsating Day 1 of the first Test versus New Zealand in Wellington on Thursday (Feb 29). Australia were reeling at 156 for 5 and could have been dismissed for anything under 200-215, however, Green's resistance ensured they got near the 300-run mark.

The day started with Tim Southee-led New Zealand opting to bowl first under overcast conditions. Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja were watchful and gave Australia a good platform, at 61 for no loss. Before the lunch break, Smith departed for 31. Soon, the visitors were reduced to 89 for 4 and lost half their side for 156 before Green batted superbly with the tailenders and showed enough grit and determination to take Australia beyond the 250-run mark at the end of play.

Meanwhile, in the post-Day 1 interview, Green told the broadcasters, "Feels really good. Mainly for where we are as a team. Was a tough wicket out there. Was nice to stick it out there, and hopefully put a semi-competitive total on the board."

NZ vs Aus, 1st Test: Cameron Green's 103* takes Australia to 279 for 9 at stumps on Day 1

Pat Cummins’ Australia have announced their Playing XI for the Wellington Test starting on Thursday (Feb 29) as the visitors look to gain vital ground in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. As announced, former skipper Steve Smith will continue to play in the opener’s role while Cameron Green will be slotted in the number four spot. The Aussies have gone with an unchanged bowling unit for the sixth consecutive game in the summer as they look to win the opening contest.

Smith continues as opener

Having taken David Warner’s position as an opener, Smith will have a point to prove as he succeeds the Aussie great. Warner’s retirement after the Sydney Test against Pakistan meant that Smith was preferred as the opener despite the availability of specialist batters in that position. Smith beat off competition from Chris Harris and Matthew Renshaw to take the opener’s position. It will also be the first time away from Australia that he takes the opener’s role having previously only opened against the West Indies in the home series.

In the bowling unit, captain Cummins, Mitch Starc, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood will continue to represent an unchanged pack. The four bowlers have been in great form this summer and have helped Australia win four Test matches in five encounters. The Aussies only lost to the West Indies in Brisbane in January where Shamar Joseph was in the form of his life.

An unchanged bowling unit also means that the last time one of the four frontline bowlers missed a match was in the Ashes. The level of consistency has helped the defending WTC winners stamp their authority on the opposition batting.

For hosts New Zealand, Devon Conway will miss the Wellington contest due to a thumb injury with Will Young likely to partner Tom Latham at the top. The New Zealand management has also roped in Henry Nicholas in the squad but Young will likely make the Playing XI. Conway’s injury occurred in the second T20I against Australia last Friday and he was forced to miss the third T20I as a result.

Australia batter Steve Smith says he isn't sure of a place in Aussie squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. He recently, however, featured in two matches of the three-game series against New Zealand.

"I haven't had that consistent block of playing T20 cricket and a lot of the guys are now, so they're kind of specialists in that format."

"So I completely understand that but we'll wait and see where that all lands," he added.

The Aussie batter, ahead of the T20 WC in June, won't be playing in any form of T20 cricket including in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Smith, however, will be joining the IPL as a commentator. After that T20 World Cup though, he's expected to play in the USA's Major League Cricket (MLC).

In place of Smith, Matt Short - the BBL player for the tournament for two consecutive season - might get a chance to be in the squad. Short also played in the third and the last T20I against New Zealand, scoring 27 off 11 balls and taking a wicket as well.

With Smith occupying the opener's slot after David Warner's retirement, Short could be a direct replacement for him. Overall, Smith has played in 67 T20Is for Australia, scoring 1,094 runs at a strike rate of 125 with five fifties and a highest of 90 to his name.

"I'm easy, I'm content where everything's at in my career and what I've been able to do so if I'm part of the World Cup great, I'd love to be, but if I'm not then so be it." Also Read: India skipper Rohit Sharma equals Sunil Gavaskar and MAK Pataudi's record of most Test wins "I haven't had that consistent block of playing T20 cricket and a lot of the guys are now, so they're kind of specialists in that format." "So I completely understand that but we'll wait and see where that all lands," he added.

Steve Smith 'isn't sure of a place' in Australia squad for upcoming T20 World Cup

Australia's paceman Xavier Bartlett starred with the ball, with a splendid 4 for 21, as Steve Smith-led Aussies hammered West Indies by eight wickets after bundling them out for a paltry 86 in the third and final ODI, at Manuka Oval, Canberra on Tuesday (Feb 6). The hosts chased down the score in only 6.5 overs to also complete a clean sweep over the hapless Shai Hope-led Windies line-up.

Opting to bowl first, everything clicked for the home side as Bartlett removed Kjorn Ottley for cheap. He got rid of the lower-middle order as well, also accounting for the wickets of Roston Chase and Romario Shepherd, whereas Lance Morris and spinner Adam Zampa ended with two wickets each.

From WI, only Alick Athanaze (32) settled in but could not do much and the rest of the innings never got the needed push.

In reply, Australia chased down the score in just 6.5 overs with openers Jake Fraser-McGurk (18-ball 41, striking at 227.78) and Josh Inglis 16-ball 35* (striking at 218.75) going bonkers from the word go. After a competitive two-match Test series, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate, West Indies fell flat in the three ODIs. Earlier, they lost the series opener by eight wickets and the penultimate ODI by 83 runs. Now, the focus shifts onto the three T20Is, with the T20 World Cup round the corner, and the Windies would be eager to end the tour on a high.

Steve Smith took up a new role when he became a Test opener during the recently concluded home series versus West Indies, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Smith has been very successful batting at No. 4 over the years but was promoted as a Test opener after David Warner's red-ball retirement. The right-hander recently spoke at length about his new role and how he has enjoyed batting at his new position in the first couple of weeks.

Smith said, as quoted by Cricbuzz, "There was a lot of commentary around I'd failed in two or three innings - I had a not out and two low scores. Now I'm averaging 60 as an opener. It was just another position; I've battled against the new ball numerous times, coming in early." He opined, "I've enjoyed the first couple of weeks of it ... if they see fit to move me back down, I'll do whatever the team needs."

Smith did not have a bright start as a Test opener. In his first three innings, he had scores of 12, 11* and 6. However, he found some rhythm in Australia's 216-run chase in the second and final Test versus West Indies at The Gabba, Brisbane. While Smith carried his bat with a fine 91 not out, he could not take his side past the finish line as Pat Cummins & Co. lost by eight runs. West Indies' Shamar Joseph starred with the ball, taking a brilliant 7 for 68 in the final innings.

Smith lauded Joseph -- who ended the series with the Player-of-the-Match and Player-of-the-Series awards for 57 runs and 13 scalps overall -- in the same interaction. Heaping praise on him, Smith recalled, "I overheard a conversation, I think we were seven down just before lunch and I overheard him speaking to Kraigg (Brathwaite) ... he's like, 'I'm bowling to the end, man'." He added, "He's a rare talent and I think it's great for cricket what he was able to do and see the West Indies competing like they did. He just kept coming in, and actually probably bowled faster at the end rather than the start."

'I have enjoyed the first couple of weeks': Steve Smith on his new role as Australia's Test opener

Australia Test opener Steve Smith has conceded that 'he could have retained the strike' instead of giving it to Josh Hazlewood against a firing Shamar Joseph in the second Test at the Gabba. Joseph dismissed Hazlewood instantly as West Indies registered its first Test win Down Under since 1997. With the eight-run win, West Indies also drew the two-match series 1-1. Joseph eventually finished with the figures of 7/68 in one of the greatest Test bowling spells.

"I've thought about it, whether we could do different things," Smith said. "Maybe I could have taken five balls against Shamar; he was on fire obviously. But then I run the risk of not getting a run off the last ball and 'Hoff' [Hazlewood] having to take all six from Alzarri."

Joseph didn't bowl initially on day 4 (Jan 28) but once he did, he bowled a 10-over spell, sending Australia's chase in a spiral. He started with the wicket of Cameron Green before sending back Travis Head on the very next ball. Australia, who were cruising along at 113/2, suddenly were 113/4. Joseph didn't stop there as he sent back dangerous Mitchell Marsh for his next wicket.

Australia's first innings hero Alex Carey also couldn't do much in front of the brilliance of Joseph as he was bowled on a yorker and the hosts were 136/6 in no time. Mitchell Starc then played some shots in his 21-run innings and added 35 runs for the seventh wicket with Steve Smith. Starc was finally removed by Joseph for his fifth wicket and the fire-breathing spell came to an end with the wicket of Pat Cummins. Shamar finished the game as he dismissed Hazlewood with a cracker of a delivery to take West Indies home.

Steve Smith capped off "a pretty good day" for Australia, guiding the hosts to 60-2 at stumps on the third day of the second Test against the West Indies in Brisbane on Saturday.

Australia need another 156 runs for a clean sweep of the two-Test series with eight wickets in hand.

At stumps, Smith was on 33 with a struggling Cameron Green alongside him on 9.

Australia's hopes of win, however, may be hampered by predicted heavy rain for the next two days.

Australia had wrapped up the West Indian second innings for 193 shortly after the tea break when No.11 Shamar Joseph had to retire hurt after being hit on the toe by a Mitchell Starc bouncer.

Joseph was taken for scans on Saturday night and although he hasn't fractured his toe, it is unknown whether he will bowl on Sunday.

The West Indies went into the final session six wickets down, but lost the last fours, including Joseph, for just 10 runs.

"I thought the bowling attack did exceptionally well today," Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon said.

"In pretty hot and humid conditions I thought we stuck at our job pretty well.

"We pride ourselves as a bowling unit on staying calm and building pressure. All in all, a pretty good day."

Chasing 216 for victory, Australia lost an early wicket when Usman Khawaja was caught down the leg side off Alzarri Joseph.

Marnus Labuschagne, who has had a lean summer, failed for the second time this match, edging Justin Greaves to third slip where Kevin Sinclair took a sharp catch to leave Australia 42-2.

Joseph said the West Indies were still thinking of pulling off an unlikely win.

"We still have eight wickets to get -- you never know what can happen on the fourth day," he said.

"If we bowl in the right areas, we can still win this game."

On an oppressively hot and humid afternoon in Brisbane, Australia's pace bowlers were forced into three-over spells throughout the day, followed by time off the field to recover.

Every time a dangerous partnership started to develop, Australia managed to take a wicket to keep the deficit in check.

After resuming Saturday at 13-1, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and No.3 Kirk McKenzie were intent on keeping the Australians in the field as long as possible.

McKenzie in particular looked in great touch as he punished anything loose from the Australian pace attack.

However, he and McKenzie had put on a 50-run partnership to lay a good foundation for the visitors.

McKenzie has had a good tour and the stylish left-hander moved comfortably to 41 before he tried to sweep off-spinner Nathan Lyon and was trapped leg before, leaving the West Indies 86-3.

Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge consolidated and reached the first break with few troubles.

Lyon struck again after dinner, drawing an edge from Athanaze (35) before a brilliant piece of fielding from Travis Head saw Hodge run out for 29.

Hodge moved forward and played the ball straight to Head at short leg, who flicked the ball onto the stumps and although Hodge's bat was over the line, it had bounced up and was in the air when the stumps were broken.

First innings top-scorer Joshua Da Silva didn't last long, caught by Green on the second attempt off Starc to leave the West Indies 157-6, 179 runs in front.

But any hope of setting a really big target faded with the post-tea collapse.

AUS vs WI 2nd Test: Steve Smith guides Australia to healthy position at stumps on Day 3

West Indies debutant fast bowler Shamar Joseph etched his name in history by becoming only the second bowler from his side to take a wicket on his first ball in Test cricket. Joseph is 23rd bowler overall in the Test cricket history to achieve the feat. He sent back Australia's new opener Steve Smith on the opening day of the first Test in Adelaide.

West Indies bowler Shamar Joseph sends back Australia opener Steve Smith on first ball in Test cricket - WATCH

Australia captain Pat Cummins has opined on Steve Smith’s new role in the side as they get ready for the two-match series starting on Wednesday (Jan 17) in Adelaide. Smith, 34, will be seen opening the Australian innings for the first time in his Test career after David Warner’s retirement. While there were speculations of drafting experienced and specialist openers, the Australian team management instead went for Smith ahead of Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft.

Pat Cummins has his say on Smith

"I've never seen him as happy and as energetic as I've seen him around the nets the last couple of days. He can't wait to get out there. Also think the new ball, maybe [there will be] a few more scoring options. It's something that excites him. So that makes sense and getting Greeny a spot where we think he is set up to succeed,” Cummins said ahead of the first Test match.

Smith has been part of the Australian side for over a decade and has three years of good cricket left in him. Nearing 10,000 Test runs, Smith’s new role could see him benefit from more runs and accolades with the national side. Only Ricky Ponting (41) has more Test hundreds than Smith (32) for Australia while he is also the fourth-highest run scorer for the Baggy Greens with 9514 runs in 105 Tests.

Smith’s promotion to top order also means that Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris will have to wait for their turn to get into the Test team. Harris was backed by Warner to succeed him while Bancroft has been in excellent touch in Sheffield Shield. However, it was Renshaw who was preferred to fill the void left by Warner. Interestingly, despite being Warner’s replacement in the squad, he is unlikely to make the Playing XI, instead, Cameron Green will be preferred in a middle-order role.

Green’s chances of playing were restricted after Mitchell Marsh’s rise in Test format in 2023. He played in one of the Ashes Tests in England, but will now get the nod and an opportunity to cement his place in the side.

Pat Cummins has his say on Smith "I've never seen him as happy and as energetic as I've seen him around the nets the last couple of days. He can't wait to get out there. Also think the new ball, maybe [there will be] a few more scoring options. It's something that excites him. AUS vs WI: Pat Cummins opines on Steve Smith's new role, says 'he can't wait to get out there'

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has acknowledged that replacing Steve Smith at number four in Tests is 'tough' but he doesn't feel any pressure. Green's comments come as he gears up for home Test series against West Indies in which he'll be batting at number four and Smith will be opening. The reshuffle comes after David Warner's retirement in Tests following the recently-concluded home series against Pakistan.

"I don't feel any pressure," Green said at a press conference ahead of the first Test which starts January 17 in Adelaide.

"Obviously replacing someone like Steve is pretty tough. But I'm just going to play my own way. But I'm obviously grateful for him putting that in his mind and thinking of me. I think he's super excited to be opening. I think it's a win-win," he added.

There were many contenders for Warner's position including Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw and Marcus Harris. The job, however, went to Smith who had expressed his desire to open the batting. Green, who was dropped from the side during the away Ashes in July last year, was backed by chief selector George Bailey for Smith's number four spot.

"It's always nice when you get that from the coaching staff and the selectors," Green said. "But you've got to also showcase on the main stage."

The all-rounder also thinks that number four is his natural spot where he can take time and get himself in.

"I've always felt maybe a touch rushed at No. 6, especially after Heady [Travis Head], he makes it look a bit too easy at No. 5. I've always felt like I've maybe had to push the game along where I feel like No. 4 is my natural game, where I can take my time and get myself in," he acknowledged.

Green has played 24 Tests so far, scoring 1075 runs at an average of 33 but all of them have come at number 6 or 7. As for his bowling, he has 30 wickets to his name at an average of 36 with a best of 5/27.
