Head, who usually bats at number five, said the team were prepared for any scenario. "As a batter, you're planning for anything at the moment, and then once we get a look at the lay of the land, we'll come up with a plan," he said. "This is a very experienced team. Wearing a helmet while standing closer in slips than normal due to the slowish nature of the Lord's pitch, the Australian veteran took a painful blow on the right little finger after Mitchell Starc found the edge. Smith immediately left the field grimacing while spilling the catch that would have left South Africa at a precarious 3-76 and put Australia in a strong position to claim back-to-back WTC titles. Smith was assessed by medical staff in the Lord's medical rooms, before being taken to hospital for X-rays and further treatment. Test cricket king Steve Smith fears Proteas attack in WTC Final 2025

Australia batting great Steve Smith is expecting a tough examination from South Africa's impressive pace attack in this week's World Test Championship final at Lord's. Reigning champions Australia, who beat India in the WTC final in 2023, are favourites against the Proteas in the five-day match, which starts on Wednesday. "South Africa have a particularly good bowling attack led by Kagiso Rabada, his record speaks for itself. Marco Jansen -- they are a good side, they are here for a reason," Smith said on Monday. Also read | ‘Shubman Gill is officially the face of Indian Cricket…it’s a bold move’: Michael Vaughan Rabada, 30, has taken 327 wickets at an average of 22, while Jansen, 25, has 73 wickets at 21.76 in his 17 matches. But former Australia Test captain Smith has a superb Test record at London's Lord's ground, with 525 runs in five matches, including two hundreds, at an average of 58.33. "It's a nice place to bat," said the 36-year-old. "Personally, I've had a bit of success here. "It's a nice wicket to bat on, but can change with the overheads, the ball swinging around, can get a bit tricky." Smith's career was almost derailed by his involvement in a 2018 ball-tampering scandal against South Africa in Cape Town. But he said relations between the two teams were now "pretty relaxed". There have been suggestions the WTC final should be played over several games rather than being just a one-off match. "Maybe a three-match series would be good, but good luck fitting it in the schedule, it's pretty jam-packed as it is," said Smith. Steve Smith's ODI retirement opens door for his last away Ashes in 2027 – Report

<p>"I missed a full toss. It wasn't ideal," said Steve Smith after Australia lost the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against India on Mar 4 in Dubai. Smith was batting at 73 at the time and Australia were two short of 200. His wicket started a bit of collapse and the Aussies were bowled out for 264.</p>
<p>A day after the loss, Smith announced his retirement from ODIs - giving the rationale that new players should have enough time to prep for the 2027 ODI World Cup - which Australia will be defending.</p>

<p>One question that pops, however, did Smith's retirement come due to his dismissal. While Smith didn't say anything directly, a batter of his stature missing a juicy full-toss certainly raises a question. The wicket came in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. Have a look at the dismissal below:</p>

<p>"Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage," Smith said on his retirement.</p>
<p>Smith played 170 ODIs in his career, scoring 5,800 runs at an average of 43 with 12 hundreds and 35 fifties. His highest in 50-over cricket was 164.</p>
<p>Smith was part of two World Cup winning teams (2015 and 2023) and mentioned them as one of his best memories in ODI cricket.</p>
<p>"There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey." he said.</p>
<p>The batter, however, remains a force to reckon with in Test cricket where he has 10,271 runs in 116 games at an average of 53 and 36 hundreds - not bad for someone who started as a leggie, isn't it?</p>

A day after the loss vs India, Smith announced his retirement from ODIs - giving the rationale that new players should have enough time to prep for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Cricket Sports

"I missed a full toss. It wasn't ideal," said Steve Smith after Australia lost the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against India on Mar 4 in Dubai. Smith was batting at 73 at the time and Australia were two short of 200. His wicket started a bit of collapse and the Aussies were bowled out for 264. A day after the loss, Smith announced his retirement from ODIs - giving the rationale that new players should have enough time to prep for the 2027 ODI World Cup - which Australia will be defending. While Smith didn't say anything directly, a batter of his stature missing a juicy full-toss certainly raises a question. The wicket came in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. Sports, Cricket: Over 170 ODIs, he made 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 tons and 35 fifties. He had ability to turn a tricky situation into a match-winning one

Steve Smith was visibly dejected after his team’s heartbreaking semi-final loss against India. He stood in the middle, absorbing it all in, and then went around hugging his teammates, offering words of comfort, and commending them for their spirited fight. Then, turning to the younger players, he applauded their efforts, his voice filled with both pride and belief. “There’s some really special talent here,” he said, hinting at the bright future ahead. And then, this morning, came the inevitable—Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket. When a young Steve Smith first stepped onto a cricket field in Australian colors, there was something unmistakable about him. His boyish smile, boundless energy, and nervous excitement made him instantly noticeable. Also Read: With Australia out, can India bury ghosts of Ahmedabad 2023 in Dubai desert? Making his ODI debut on February 19, 2010, against the West Indies, he came as a leg-spinning all-rounder. But beneath that fresh-faced enthusiasm was a cricketer who would become into one of Australia’s greatest batting minds. Smith’s rise wasn’t straightforward. Initially, a supporting player in the team, he soon found his true calling with the bat. His technique was unorthodox—his exaggerated shuffle, constant fidgeting, and relentless focus at the crease were unlike anything the game had seen. And yet, when he settled in, he was untouchable. His ability to manipulate the field, absorb pressure, and grind out tough runs made him indispensable. Over 170 ODIs, he made 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 fifties. He had an uncanny ability to turn a tricky situation into a match-winning one, and he relished the responsibility. His presence on the field was unique. Even in the tensest situations, there was an odd serenity about him. He would walk to the crease with confidence, tapping the pitch repeatedly, eyes scanning the field like a chess grandmaster planning his next move. His smile, sometimes mischievous and sometimes just a reflection of his love for the game, became a familiar sight. Whether celebrating a win, encouraging a teammate, or simply enjoying a contest, Smith carried an infectious energy that lifted those around him. A stellar career In 2015, he took over the ODI captaincy from Michael Clarke, a moment that marked a new chapter in Australian cricket. Smith wasn’t a loud or aggressive leader; he led through his sheer cricketing intelligence and the example he set. Under his leadership, Australia remained a dominant force, and his 2015 World Cup campaign was a testament to that. His century in the semi-final against India was a masterclass, guiding Australia to another title. As captain, he won 32 of 64 matches, shaping a team that was resilient and composed under pressure. Then came the biggest test of his career—the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. It threatened to overshadow everything he had built, but Smith refused to let it define him. His tearful press conference showed a man devastated by his actions, yet determined to make amends. When he returned to international cricket, there was a new steel in him. He was no longer just a great batsman; he was a symbol of redemption. Though he never regained the ODI captaincy, he remained a leader in every sense, mentoring younger players and delivering match-winning performances. By the time he announced his ODI retirement in 2025, following Australia’s semi-final loss in the Champions Trophy to India, his legacy was up and about. His final innings—a composed 73—was a perfect reminder of his class. As he walked off the field one last time in the format, there was that familiar smile, a mixture of satisfaction and gratitude. Steve Smith wasn’t just a cricketer; he was an artist at the crease. His journey from a promising leg-spinner to one of the greatest batsmen in modern cricket is one that will be remembered not just in numbers, but in moments—his fidgeting, his resilience, and that ever-present, boyish smile. Steven Peter Devereux Smith. The boy from Kogarah, Sydney. 15 years later, he has become a cricketing royalty and leaves a lasting legacy for Australia.

The final shuffle: Steve Smith's ODI career comes to a close

<p>As KL Rahul charged down the wicket and hit Australia&rsquo;s Glenn Maxwell for a six over long-on, there was an eruption of joy in the Indian dressing room.&nbsp;</p>
<p>From Virat Kohli&rsquo;s animated celebration to Rahul exulting in jubilation, a feeling of glee and happiness surrounded the Dubai stadium.</p>
<p>Yes, India beat Australia&mdash;this time in the semi-final of the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025. The Indian team showed remarkable dominance, securing a spot in the final. But let&rsquo;s be honest: Can this win be equal to or greater to what India faced on November 19, 2023, in the ODI World Cup final? The answer&mdash;one can never know.</p>
<p>The 2023 ODI World Cup final was not just a match; it was a historic moment. Approximately 1,20,000 fans thronged the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, expecting a fairytale ending. India had cruised through the tournament with an unbeaten run. Everything seemed set for a dream finish. But then came Australia&mdash;relentless, unshaken, and as dominant as ever on the biggest stage.</p>

A side that knew how to handle pressure, a side that had been there before, winning titles for fun. And in that final, Travis Head delivered a masterclass, crushing India&rsquo;s hopes with a century that silenced a sea of blue. The pain of that loss was immeasurable, and the scars still remain.</p>
<p>Now, fast forward to March 4, 2025. India beat Australia, but was this really the Australia we feared?</p>
<p>Come to think about it, this wasn&rsquo;t the same Australian team that broke a billion hearts in 2023. This was a second-string side&mdash;a team where only two players, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell, had played over 150 ODIs. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood&mdash;players who defined Australia&rsquo;s ruthless bowling attack&mdash;were nowhere to be seen. Marcus Stoinis had retired just before the tournament, further weakening their all-round depth.</p>
<p>Instead, Australia fielded a side with inexperienced players like Cooper and Tanveer Sangha, who had barely played ODIs at the highest level. The bowling attack lacked firepower, missing the venom that Hazelwood, Starc and Cummins brought. And yet, despite being vastly underpowered, Australia still put up a fight.</p>
<p>This semi-final was supposed to be a one-sided affair. India, with its world-class line-up, should have steamrolled this young Australian side. But the fact that Australia dragged the match into the second-last over despite missing half of their key players speaks volumes about their never-give-up attitude.</p>
<p>It was a win, but was it truly satisfying? Was it as defining as a World Cup final? No. Because deep down, every Indian fan knows that the Australia we conquered on March 4, 2025, was not the same Australia that crushed our dreams on November 19, 2023. That loss in the World Cup final was a heartbreak that can never be erased.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yes, beating Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final is a great achievement. But let&rsquo;s not pretend it washes away the pain of Ahmedabad. Some wounds take longer time to heal.</p>
<p>Now, with Australia out of the tournament, can India bury the ghost of Ahmedabad 2023 and go on to lift the coveted trophy. We will have to wait till Sunday, March 9.</p>

"Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way. "Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage." After a career spanning over a decade and a half, Smith hangs his boots with 170 appearances in ODI format (16th most for Australia). He has also scored 5800 runs during that time (12th highest for Australia). During those 170 appearances, Smith also led Australia in 64 matches including the Champions Trophy 2025 where his side exited in the semis after losing to India. Despite his retirement from the ODI format, Smith will continue to feature in the Test and T20I format having recently scored a double ton against Sri Lanka in red-ball cricket. Smith has showed desire to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as cricket returns to the quadrennial event after 128 years.

<p>Travis Head, India's nemesis in recent ICC tournaments, then took on the India attack and especially Shami as he hit the bowler for four fours in an over.</p>
<p>Rohit then did what former spinner Ravi Ashwin had advised on his YouTube channel a day prior to the match. The skipper handed the ball to mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, and he dismissed Head on the very first ball.</p>
<p>Australia finished the first powerplay of 10 overs at 63/2 with Head making 39 off them off just 33 balls, including five fours and two sixes.</p>
<p>After those two wickets, Smith started the rebuild with Marnus Labuschagne, and the duo added 56 runs for the third wicket before Ravindra Jadeja trapped Labuschagne LBW on a personal score of 29. The partnership, however, did take Australia past 100.</p>
<p>At the half-way mark of the innings, i.e., 25 overs, Australia were 125/3 with Smith looking fluent at 44 in 64 balls with the help of three fours.</p>

The ball then travelled to stumps and hit them, but the bails didn't get dislodged. The incident left the Indian fielders in complete shock and disbelief. The decision was proven wrong quickly as Mohammed Shami dismissed Cooper Connolly for a duck off nine balls. Rohit then did what former spinner Ravi Ashwin had advised on his YouTube channel a day prior to the match. The skipper handed the ball to mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, and he dismissed Head on the very first ball. Australia finished the first powerplay of 10 overs at 63/2 with Head making 39 off them off just 33 balls, including five fours and two sixes. After those two wickets, Smith started the rebuild with Marnus Labuschagne, and the duo added 56 runs for the third wicket before Ravindra Jadeja trapped Labuschagne LBW on a personal score of 29. The partnership, however, did take Australia past 100. At the half-way mark of the innings, i.e., 25 overs, Australia were 125/3 with Smith looking fluent at 44 in 64 balls with the help of three fours.

Champions Trophy, IND vs AUS: WATCH | LUCKY Smith survives as bails don’t come off despite ball hitting stumps

<p>Aussie skipper Steve Smith top scored for his team against India in the Champions Trophy semi-final on Mar 4, but his dismissal was rather a lame one. After being on the crease for 95 deliveries and scoring 73 runs, Smith missed a juicy full-toss ball from Shami on the stumps and was clean-bowled.</p>
<p>The wicket came in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. The dismissal, which came with Australia two short of 200, sparked a little collapse as the Kangaroos were bowled out for 264 in 49.3 overs. Have a look at the dismissal below:</p>

<p>Australia skipper Steve Smith has backed the decision of his team and South Africa travelling to Dubai ahead of the India vs New Zealand fixture on Mar 2. With the first semi-final set to be played on Tuesday (Mar 4) in Dubai, both teams were waiting on who gets to play in UAE.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After India beat New Zealand and finished on top of Group A, Australia stayed in Dubai but South Africa had to travel back after a 18-hour sojourn in Dubai. The Proteas will now play New Zealand in the second semi-final on March 5 in Lahore, Pakistan.</p>

Champions Trophy: 'This arrangement made sense to us,' says Smith on Australia and SA travelling to Dubai

<p>Australia captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/steve-smith">Steve Smith</a> has acknowledged the challenge of facing India's spin-heavy attack on a dry pitch in Dubai ahead of their Champions Trophy semi-final. He said that his team&rsquo;s success will largely depend on how they tackle India&rsquo;s spinners.</p>
<p>India, fielding four spinners in their last group-stage match against New Zealand, secured a 44-run win by choking the Kiwi batting lineup. Smith, aware of the threat posed by India&rsquo;s spin attack, admitted that countering them effectively will be crucial.</p>
<p>"I think it&rsquo;s not just about Chakravarthy; the rest of their spinners are quality as well. The key for us will be how we handle their spin," Smith said on the eve of the semi-final. "There&rsquo;s going to be some turn, and we have to find ways to counter that. We&rsquo;ve got a few plans, and we&rsquo;ll see how they play out tomorrow."</p>

<p>One of Australia&rsquo;s key weapons, opener <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/travis-head">Travis Head</a>, has a strong record in knockout games, and Smith hopes he can deliver again.</p>
<p>&ldquo; There&rsquo;s always pressure in big games, but Travis has stepped up many times before. He looked in great touch against Afghanistan, and I&rsquo;m sure he&rsquo;ll come out with the same aggressive intent. Hopefully, he can make an impact early on.&rdquo;</p>
<p>While India have played all their matches in Dubai, giving them familiarity with the conditions, Smith downplayed any advantage.</p>
<p>&ldquo; They have seen the conditions firsthand, but I&rsquo;m not sure if it&rsquo;s an advantage. The square block is quite dry, and we&rsquo;ve seen how the wickets play here,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<h2>'We have variety of options'</h2>
<p>Australia&rsquo;s preparation was slightly disrupted after their last league match against Afghanistan was rained out, forcing them to wait on India&rsquo;s result to confirm their semifinal venue. However, Smith saw a silver lining.</p>
<p>"It worked out well for us. If we had waited for last night&rsquo;s result, we would have flown in today and played tomorrow without training on the surface. Instead, we got two days to prepare and adapt to the conditions."</p>
<p>Smith also expressed confidence in Australia&rsquo;s spin options, mentioning all-rounder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/glenn-maxwell">Glenn Maxwell</a> and Cooper Connolly as potential contributors.</p>
<p>&ldquo; We have a variety of options. Maxwell is there, and although Matthew Short&rsquo;s absence is a loss, he bowled well in the last game. Connolly is another option, and we have part-timers who can play a role.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The Australian squad is missing key pacers like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, but Smith praised the replacements for stepping up.</p>
<p>&ldquo; We&rsquo;re without some experienced bowlers, but the guys who have come in have done well. This tournament has been a great opportunity for them to gain international exposure. Hopefully, they can deliver another strong performance and take us to the final,&rdquo; he signed off.</p>

Appointed as team doctor for the Australian deaf and hard of hearing (HoH) cricket team One of Australia’s key weapons, opener Travis Head, has a strong record in knockout games, and Smith hopes he can deliver again. “There’s always pressure in big games, but Travis has stepped up many times before. He looked in great touch against Afghanistan, and I’m sure he’ll come out with the same aggressive intent. Hopefully, he can make an impact early on.” While India have played all their matches in Dubai, giving them familiarity with the conditions, Smith downplayed any advantage. “They have seen the conditions firsthand, but I’m not sure if it’s an advantage. The square block is quite dry, and we’ve seen how the wickets play here,” he said. 'We have variety of options' Australia’s preparation was slightly disrupted after their last league match against Afghanistan was rained out, forcing them to wait on India’s result to confirm their semifinal venue. However, Smith saw a silver lining. "It worked out well for us. If we had waited for last night’s result, we would have flown in today and played tomorrow without training on the surface. Instead, we got two days to prepare and adapt to the conditions." Smith also expressed confidence in Australia’s spin options, mentioning all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and Cooper Connolly as potential contributors. “We have a variety of options. Maxwell is there, and although Matthew Short’s absence is a loss, he bowled well in the last game. Connolly is another option, and we have part-timers who can play a role.” The Australian squad is missing key pacers like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, but Smith praised the replacements for stepping up. “We’re without some experienced bowlers, but the guys who have come in have done well. This tournament has been a great opportunity for them to gain international exposure. Hopefully, they can deliver another strong performance and take us to the final,” he signed off. Champions Trophy 2025: Josh Inglis counters Bazball, helps Australia down England in Lahore

<p>ICC Hall of Famer and former Australian skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ricky-ponting">Ricky Ponting</a> has thrown his support behind <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/steve-smith">Steve Smith</a> opening the batting during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, believing the experienced right-hander could anchor the innings at the top of the order.</p>
<p>Australia&rsquo;s campaign begins on February 22 in Lahore against arch-rivals England, followed by matches against South Africa (February 25) in Rawalpindi and Afghanistan (February 28) back in Lahore.</p>
<p>Ponting, speaking on The ICC Review, addressed Australia&rsquo;s mounting injury concerns. Regular captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pat-cummins">Pat Cummins</a>, fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh, and even recently retired Marcus Stoinis (from ODIs) will miss the tournament, forcing selectors to make some bold calls.</p>

<p>While <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/travis-head">Travis Head</a> appears locked in for a top-order spot, Ponting speculated that moving Smith up from his usual No. 4 position could be on the cards. Smith has thrived as an opener in the Big Bash League, including hitting a blistering 121* off 64 balls for the Sydney Sixers in January.</p>
<p>Despite 151 ODI innings, Smith has never opened in the format. The move would also reflect concerns about the current form of young opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, who averages just 14 from seven ODI innings since debuting in February 2024. His best knock&mdash;41 off 18 balls&mdash;came against the West Indies, but consistency has eluded him.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Yeah, he is making it harder and harder (for selectors to stick with Fraser-McGurk),&rdquo; Ponting admitted. &ldquo; There&rsquo;s just so much talent there, but we haven&rsquo;t seen it consistently enough just yet. And that&rsquo;s one of the big calls they&rsquo;ll have to make now.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Ponting believes Smith&rsquo;s class and recent white-ball form could provide Australia with stability at the top.</p>

Despite promising young talent, recent form raises concerns.</p>
<h2>Recent struggles</h2>
<p>Since their World Cup win in 2023, Australia has played four bilateral ODI series with mixed results. While they clinched wins over West Indies at home and England in the UK, they suffered a home series defeat to Pakistan for the first time in 22 years and were clean-swept by Sri Lanka, capped by a crushing 174-run loss. Their overall record since the 2023 World Cup stands at seven wins and six losses from 13 matches.</p>
<h2>Positives:</h2>
<p><strong>Stable leadership:</strong> Despite the absence of Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood, the squad has leadership depth. Smith, alongside Head, Maxwell, Carey, and Labuschagne, brings stability to the team.</p>
<p><strong>Carey&rsquo;s resurgence:</strong> After missing the 2023 World Cup squad, Carey has returned with a bang, scoring 205 runs in his last four innings at an impressive average of 68.33 and a strike rate of 106.77.</p>
<p><strong>Big-match players:</strong> Head, Smith, and Maxwell have a reputation for delivering on big stages. Even in poor form, their ability to step up when it counts could inspire the squad.</p>
<h2>Negatives:</h2>
<p><strong>Winless in CT since 2009:</strong> Australia hasn&rsquo;t won a match in the tournament since their 2009 title run, with winless campaigns in 2013 and 2017.</p>
<p><strong>Opening partnership a concern?:</strong> Travis Head lacks a reliable opening partner with Mitchell Marsh unavailable. Contenders Matt Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Josh Inglis have yet to prove themselves.</p>
<p><strong>Smith and Marnus' form:</strong> The team&rsquo;s anchors are struggling; Smith averages 38.55 in 12 matches with just two fifties, while Labuschagne has managed only 163 runs at 23.28 in eight innings.</p>
<p><strong>Depleted pace attack:</strong> Without Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, and Marcus Stoinis (retired from ODIs), the pace unit now has the likes of Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, Aaron Hardie, and Spencer Johnson&mdash;a far cry from the intimidation of the veterans.</p>
<p><strong>Lack of winning momentum:</strong> Recent series losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, combined with a whitewash, do little to build confidence.</p>
<p><strong>Maxwell&rsquo;s poor form:</strong> After his World Cup heroics, Maxwell has hit a rough patch, scoring just 56 runs and taking five wickets in his last eight matches.</p>
<h2><strong>Australia's Champions Trophy team:</strong></h2>

SWOT Analysis: Champions Trophy 2025:-Winless streak and missing stars- Australia’s uphill battle for glory

<p>Legendary Australian cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/adam-gilchrist">Adam Gilchrist</a> has suggested that stand-in captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/steve-smith">Steve Smith</a> should open the batting in Australia&rsquo;s ODI team for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Gilchrist believes this move would allow Smith to face more deliveries and maximise his impact.</p>
<p>In Australia's recent 2-0 ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka, Smith, batting in the middle order, managed scores of just 12 and 29. With young opener Jake Fraser-McGurk struggling for consistency, Gilchrist sees Smith as a strong opening option, though he also finds Matt Short a viable candidate to partner with Travis Head.</p>
<p>&ldquo; It&rsquo;s a tough call right now, but I believe Steve Smith should open. I&rsquo;m not sure where he batted in Sri Lanka, but Travis Head is a certainty. I also like Matt Short in that role&mdash;he forms a good left-hand, right-hand combination,&rdquo; Gilchrist said on ABC Summer Grandstand on Saturday.</p>
<p>He added, &ldquo;Smith has opened in T20 cricket successfully, so I don&rsquo;t see why he couldn&rsquo;t do it in ODIs. Maybe he&rsquo;s too valuable in the middle order, but in a 50-over game, you want your best batters facing as many balls as possible. It&rsquo;s a strong option to consider.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Injury woes for Australia</h2>
<p>Australia will enter the Champions Trophy without key pacers <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-starc">Mitchell Starc</a>, Josh Hazlewood and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pat-cummins">Pat Cummins</a>, as well as all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh, who are sidelined due to injuries.</p>
<p>With group-stage clashes against England, Afghanistan, and South Africa, Gilchrist believes Australia could face difficulties in Pakistan, especially with limited preparation in the ODI format.</p>
<p>&ldquo; There hasn&rsquo;t been much focus on ODIs lately,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Australia had a fantastic summer, but teams mainly prioritise 50-over cricket during a World Cup year. With the next ODI World Cup in 2027, this tournament is an opportunity to experiment with younger players, which could lead to mixed results.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Despite the challenges, Gilchrist acknowledged Australia&rsquo;s ability to fight through tough situations. &ldquo; They always find a way to get through tournaments, but conditions in Pakistan and the absence of key players will make this a tough campaign,&rdquo; he concluded.</p>
