From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma, 5 active batters with most international hundreds

When Mitchell Starc marks out his run-up for the first over of a Test match, there is always a murmur in the stadium, an unspoken warning that something could happen immediately. Perth knows this better than most. You can feel it in the way the crowd leans forward, the way the slips crouch lower, the way the batter takes that extra breath. It’s a familiar buzz, the kind that tells you: When Starc starts a Test, a wicket is never far away. In the opening Ashes Test of 2025–26, that buzz became prophecy. By stumps on day 1, Starc had taken 7 wickets, and reminded the cricket world that very few left-arm fast bowlers in history can dictate the rhythm of a match like he still can at 35.
The buzz, the angle, the spell
Perth has always been good to left-arm quicks, but it belongs to Starc. The bounce suits him, the wind suits him, the hardness of the pitch amplifies the violence in his late swing. When he steamed in for the first ball of the series, the ball hit the keeper’s gloves at 147 kmph, thudding into the webbing like a gunshot. Four balls later, Zak Crawley was late on a length delivery that tailed in just enough. Nick to Usman Khawaja, who fumbled but took the catch. The buzz turned into a roar. For the next hour, every delivery felt like a possibility. It wasn’t just the speed, it was the threat. Starc’s whole aura is built on unpredictability. He keeps you guessing, keeps you uncomfortable. Even when he misses by a few inches, the mind of the batter doesn’t. In this Test, he hit his zones more consistently than he has in years: 13 balls over 145 kmph in the first spell alone. An average swing of 1.6°, his best in Australia since 2021. Seven wickets in the first innings. The message was clear: England didn’t just have to score runs, they had to survive Starc.
Reverse swing at Perth? Starc makes it happen
The turning point came late on day 2 when the ball, surprisingly early, began to reverse. England were 61/1 and starting to settle. Starc sensed it. His length pitched up by just a fraction, his wrist position straightened, and suddenly the ball was bending back into the right-handers at 142–144. Three overs. Ninety-three seconds of chaos. 3/12. It was trademark Starc, the spell that breaks not just stumps, but spirits.
Six years of sustained hostility
Starc’s longevity has become a story of its own. At 35, he should not be bowling like this, not according to the fast-bowling logic we’ve grown up with. But he is, and he has been doing it for nearly six straight years without a dip in pace.Across Tests since 2019: Strike rate: 49 (best among Australian quicks), average speed in first spells: 143.4 kmph, percentage of balls above 140 kmph: 52%, Lead wicket-taker in Australia during this period. These aren’t the numbers of a veteran hanging on, they’re the numbers of a frontline enforcer. What sets him apart is how he uses his left-arm angle. Batters hardly face genuine left-arm pace nowadays, maybe once every few months in international cricket. Against Starc, they face not just the angle but the speed, the swing, and the length that forces decisions. England’s top order, especially, has historically struggled with him: Since 2015, Starc has dismissed English right-handers 48 times in Tests. 33% of those were bowled or LBW, proof of how much they misread his late tail. This Test added five more to that list.
Fitness at 35: The secret behind the speed
Starc’s durability is not an accident. His routine, quietly relentless, is built around sustaining pace: Two days a week dedicated to leg strength, strict recovery windows (he is obsessive about the 48-hour rule), low-impact running to preserve ankles, a highly controlled workload: rarely more than 22 overs in an innings. He has become something like a high-performance machine, tuned to maximise 12–15 overs of impact a day, rather than endurance for its own sake. This Perth Test was the perfect advertisement for that method.
A bowler who lives in the edge-of-the-seat moments
Some bowlers dominate quietly. Starc dominates loudly. When he’s running in: The slips stay lower. The keeper sets deeper. The batter’s back foot shuffles. The commentators fall silent for just a beat longer. His bowling isn’t just fast; it’s cinematic. Every spell feels like it belongs on a highlight montage. It’s the same electricity Wasim Akram carried in the 90s. The same tension Mitchell Johnson brought in 2013. The same sense that one ball could rewrite the next hour.Starc may not have their averages. But he has their aura.
A wicket always around the corner with Starc bowling
By the time he took his 10th wicket, Starc wasn’t celebrating wildly. He doesn’t need to anymore. His spells aren’t about theatrics; they’re about inevitability. This is what separates Starc even now: He doesn’t bowl for pressure. He bowls for breakthroughs. He doesn’t bowl to contain. He bowls to collapse. And at Perth, he collapsed England twice. The first Ashes Test of 2025–26 now belongs to him, a reminder, at 35, that the left-arm enforcer is still Australia’s loudest, fiercest weapon. Still summoning swing from nowhere. Still hitting 140+ like it’s routine. Still making stadiums buzz in his first over. Still making wickets feel one ball away.

Mitchell Starc’s 10-wicket Ashes burst reaffirms his status as the last great left-arm enforcer, still bowling 140+, still lethal, still a wicket always around the corner

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has responded strongly to comments made by Australian star Steve Smith, reigniting the ongoing cricketing debate between the rivals. Panesar’s remarks add fuel to the England–Australia rivalry, sparking discussion among fans and analysts about player performances, past encounters, and the heated history between the two cricketing nations.

Former England Spinner Monty Panesar Fires Back at Steve Smith

Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith has hit back at Monty Panesar’s remarks concerning his involvement in the infamous Sandpapergate scandal, ahead of the 2025 Ashes series. Panesar, the former England spinner, had earlier suggested that England should make Smith feel guilty about his role in the 2018 ball-tampering incident against South Africa. He recommended that the English team openly question Smith’s ethics, saying things like, "I don't think it's right that he's the captain; he hasn't played the game fairly." Also Read: Ashes 2025-26 preview: The battle for the Urn begins as England look to end 14 years of agony in Australia When asked to respond to these comments during a press conference, Smith took a playful jab at Panesar, referencing his embarrassing appearance on BBC’s Mastermind in 2019, where Panesar struggled to answer basic questions. “I'm going to go off topic here. Who of you in the room has seen Mastermind and Monty Panesar on that? Any of you? Those of you that have will understand where I'm coming from. If you haven't, do yourself a favour because it is pretty comical. Anyone who believes that Athens is in Germany, Oliver Twist is a season of the year, and America is a city, it doesn't really bother me those comments. That's as far as I'll go with that one,” Smith was quoted as saying.
Watch the video here

Smith, who was banned for a year and stripped of the Australian captaincy following the Sandpapergate scandal, was at the center of the incident when Cameron Bancroft was caught trying to alter the ball with sandpaper. Smith, as captain, admitted to knowing about the plan, which led to a 12-month suspension for both him and David Warner. Bancroft received a nine-month ban. As the Ashes series approaches, Smith's retort to Panesar's comments is bound to add more intrigue to the much-anticipated battle between Australia and England, which kicks off on Friday (November 21) at Perth Stadium.

Steve Smith dismissed former England players' criticism over Sandpapergate, referencing his poor performance on BBC's Mastermind as a rebuttal ahead of the first Test of the Ashes series

He recommended that the English team openly question Smith’s ethics, saying things like, "I don't think it's right that he's the captain; he hasn't played the game fairly." After over a decade of Ashes frustration, England’s cricketers are ready to take on Australia in their own backyard, with the chance to rewrite history. Their last win on Australian soil came in the 2010-11 series, a golden moment that has remained a distant memory. Under the aggressive leadership of Ben Stokes and the tactical acumen of Brendon McCullum, England are bringing a bold, attacking mindset to this year’s Ashes. Known for their high-risk, high-reward ‘Bazball’ philosophy, they now face the ultimate challenge: to bring that approach to Australia’s unforgiving pitches and break a 14-year winless streak down under. England’s fast bowling contingent, led by the firepower of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, promises to provide the much-needed spark. Archer, who makes his Test debut in Australia this series, is especially exciting with his raw pace, while Wood’s relentless speed could trouble Australia’s batters early. Combined with the team's aggressive batting style and strong team morale, England have their sights set firmly on the series opener as their chance to make a statement.
Australia’s quest for dominance: Smith’s steadying hand amid injury setbacks
Australia, meanwhile, are coming into the series with their own challenges, missing key players such as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood due to injuries. Despite these setbacks, they remain a formidable force, with Steve Smith stepping up as stand-in captain. Steve Smith, Australia's stand-in skipper for the first Ashes Test, thinks that England are going 'wrong way' by planning to go with full-on pace attack in Perth. The statemen comes nearly a week before the the Ashes opener at Optus Stadium which starts November 21. Potential Australian captain for the home Ashes, Steve Smith, is ready to take on England across five Tests starting late next month, but what he is prouder of is his teammate and close pal Marnus Labuschagne’s form and how he ‘backed up his words’ ahead of a rocking summer. Australia’s chief selector for the men’s team, George Bailey, has revealed his team’s plans for the upcoming Ashes as they prepare to defend the holy grail yet again. Playing in their own backyard, Australia will have to cope without captain Pat Cummins at least for the start of the Ashes. Steve Smith and Cameron Green half-centuries pushed Australia into the ascendancy with a lead of 254 runs at stumps on the third day of the second Test against the West Indies at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada on Saturday. Holding a 1-0 lead in the three-match series following a 159-run victory in the first Test in Barbados, the tourists have three wickets in hand as they sit on 221-7 going into the fourth day of what has so far been a low-scoring duel. Smith's innings of 71, his 43rd Test half-century, reflected his awareness of the state of the match as the day progressed. Cautious at first when he came to the crease with his side again in early trouble at 28 for three in the first session, Smith unfurled more of the trademark shots from his considerable repertoire in productive partnerships with Green and then the always aggressive Travis Head. He looked well set to coast to a 37th Test hundred after tea only to be undone by Justin Greaves, the seam bowling all-rounder trapping Smith lbw to end an innings that spanned 119 deliveries and included one six and seven fours. His 93-run fourth-wicket partnership with Green was pivotal in the visitors tilting the balance of play in their favour. "It's a tricky surface, a bit up and down, a bit of seam movement, so for this innings I decided to bat on middle (stump) and try and be a bit more still to negate lbw as much as possible," Smith said. "And then anything loose try to cash in on it. You've got to try to put the bad balls away to put the pressure back on the bowlers." "I think the new ball will be pretty critical for us when we get that opportunity but hopefully we can first get up to (a lead of) 300." Green, whose previous three innings in this series in the vital number three position have raised questions about his suitability for the role, displayed commendable discipline and application in working his way to a seventh Test fifty. All his good work was undone though by the vagaries of this two-paced pitch as he was bowled off the inside-edge by Shamar Joseph for 52 halfway through the afternoon period. His watchful innings occupied 123 balls during which he stroked five fours. Head was also a victim of uneven bounce, although the persistent pace and accuracy of Shamar Joseph contributed to him being bowled for 39. Alex Carey (26 not out) again eked out important runs for Australia at the end of the day, and resumes on the fourth day in partnership with captain Pat Cummins. Earlier, nightwatchman Nathan Lyon's demise lifted West Indies spirits higher after a strong finish to the second day when a Jayden Seales double-strike reduced Australia to 12 for two at stumps. Lyon offered a catch high to John Campbell at second slip off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph having done his job the previous evening in protecting the next man in, Smith, from having to negotiate a tricky few minutes to the close. After missing the first Test through injury and then falling cheaply in the first innings on Thursday, Smith was clearly intent on lengthy occupation of the crease second time around. Steve Smith has returned to Australia's playing XI for the second Test against the West Indies starting Thursday (Jul 3) in Grenada. Keeper-batter Josh Inglis is left out of the side as Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed the starting XI on the match eve. Cummins revealed that Smith ticked all the required boxes in his recovery from a dislocated finger, resuming his position at number four in the Caribbean. Smith’s inclusion boosts Australia’s batting attack that missed their two formidable starters in him and Marnus Labuschagne, who remains on the bench thus far this series. Inglis, who scored five and 12 in the series opener in Barbados, which the visitors won by 159 runs within three days, made way for Smith for the second Test. Good news for Australia as Steve Smith has resumed batting practice after missing out on playing the first Test against West Indies, which the visitors won by 159 runs inside three days. Smith, who dislocated his right hand’s little finger while attempting to complete a slip against South Africa at Lord’s, flew to his home in New York to complete his rehab. However, following Australia's statement win in Barbados, Aussie captain Pat Cummins hinted at Smith’s inclusion in the side for the Grenada Test, starting next Thursday (Jul 3), saying his injury looks fine now and that he even had a net session in the US. The latest reports suggest that Smith will join the squad in Bridgetown on Sunday (Jun 29) and, if declared fit, will return to the playing XI for the second Test. "Of course, the top order would like to score some more runs. The challenge of Test cricket, especially for young players, is when you get thrown different conditions, you've got to find a way to be effective. "That's the challenge for our young batting group – if you presented that same wicket next week, would you do anything differently? Would you not? "That will be the conversations over the next few days. "But we back them in, and their prep leading in was excellent and the way they're talking about playing is really good, so we've got full confidence,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Australia will fly to Grenada for the second Test on Monday (Jun 30) in what would be their first Test at the venue.
