Known to be an observer of the game like none other, ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin explained how Steve Smith and Ashton Agar plotted Virat Kohli’s dismissal in the final ODI in Chennai. Chasing 270, India got reduced to 77 for two when Kohli and KL Rahul started building a partnership. When Kohli crossed his fifty, he fell prey to the ploy laid by the stand-in Aussie captain and left-arm spinner Agar, chipping one straight to the long-off area.

Speaking on his YouTube Channel, Ashwin, who had earlier tweeted praising Smith’s captaincy following the end of the match, explained how Steve while standing in the slips, helped Agar get the big scalp in Kohli.

Carrying the momentum forward, Agar also dismissed Suryakumar Yadav on the very next ball, accounting for him attaining a bizarre record of getting out on a first-ball duck in three successive matches.

Returning to the dismissal, Ashwin said he heard Smith constantly telling Agar to bowl outside the off-stump area. Explaining how that led to Kohli’s wicket, Ashwin said if the ball holds its line while the batter tries to play it over the extra-cover region, it will go straight to long-off, which creates a higher chance of a wicket falling and eventually, that only happened.

“I noticed Steve Smith was constantly telling Ashton Agar from the first slip, 'Keep bowling it outside. He also made David Warner come in a bit from long-off and set up the entire dismissal,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

The India international also commented on how Kohli rediscovering his form might help India in the World Cup later this year. Ashwin said Kohli is peaking again at the right time, and while he failed to convert his fifties into daddy hundreds like he used to do before, the former India captain might unleash him at the bigger stage.

“Usually, when Virat Kohli scores a fifty, he will convert it into an unbeatable hundred and prove why he is the king. But that did not happen. But fingers crossed, he is looking very good by the day. He is definitely going to turn it on during the World Cup, I have all the beliefs. Let's back him,” Ashwin added.

Meanwhile, both Ashwin and Kohli will now be seen playing for the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, respectively in the IPL 2023, which starts on March 31.

<h3>India make good start</h3>

Having initially lead the series 1-0 after the Mumbai contest, the Indian Team needed a string show with the bat after they suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Vizag. Both skipper Rohit Sharma (30) and Shubman Gill (37) gave a brilliant start to the innings as they put together an opening stand of 65 runs. However, both Rohit and Shubman departed in quick succession as India were left to rue despite a good start.

Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (32) then steadied the ship for India as they built a partnership of 69 runs for the third wicket. However, wickets then fell in tandem as Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a third consecutive golden duck while Axar Patel (2) returned after a bizarre mix-up while running. However, Adam Zampa’s four wickets and Ashton Agar’s brace were enough to break the back of the Indian team as they were bowled out for 248 and lost by 21 runs.

The series defeat was India’s first on home turf in ODIs since 2019, having lost 3-2 in 2019.

Mitchell Marsh scored the highest for Australia at 47 and made them from as many deliveries. Alex Carey played a knock of 38 runs. IND vs AUS 3rd ODI: Steve Smith's Australia dismantle Team India for first home series defeat in four years

Australia beat India by 21 runs on Wednesday in Chennai to claim the three-match ODI series 2-1 and the number one spot in the ICC ODI rankings. This win also accounted for Australia ending India’s four-year-long ODI series winning streak at home in this format. Ironically, it was Australia only that last beat them in an ODI series (3-2) at home in 2019. As things stand, with 113 rating points, Australia is the new number-one ODI team in the world.

At the start of this year, firstly India beat Sri Lanka 3-0 and then thumped New Zealand with the same margin in the following series to take the number one spot from England in ODIs. A month and a half later, they returned to the second spot.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, an injury-hit Australian team&nbsp;was without two of their premier seamers in regular captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, while their star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was also benched for this game. As this&nbsp;series was tied at 1-1 with Australia making a comeback after a massive ten-wicket win in the previous match in Vizag, Chennai played as the decider that turned out to be a heartbreak for the Indian fans.&nbsp;

Australia won the toss and elected to bat. They brought in fit-now David Warner, who surprisingly didn’t open as Australia persisted with the successful opening combination of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. The pair flourished as they stitched a 68-run stand for the first wicket before Hardik Pandya struck three wickets to pull India back into the game.

While Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav kept picking wickets at regular intervals, resistance from the lower order ensured Australia reach 269 in the first innings.&nbsp;

Unlike how it started in the previous two games, India’s innings this time was right on the track as Shubman Gill and captain Rohit Sharma slammed Mitchell Starc to all parts of the ground. While Australia’s premier seamer didn’t provide his team with the breakthrough, Sean Abbot got rid of Rohit initially.&nbsp;

A couple of overs later, Adam Zampa trapped Shubman Gill in the front. Virat Kohli and India’s first-match hero KL then steadied the ship with a 69-run partnership before two quick wickets hurt India’s momentum. It was about the time before Ashton Agar struck gold, removing Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav on successive deliveries to put the hosts under further pressure.

Though Hardik Pandya did play an anchor role later on, he too lost his wicket soon after, as Adam Zampa added two to his name, almost ending India’s hope of winning the series and safeguarding their number one spot. Australia wrapped India on 248 and won the game by 21 runs.&nbsp;

IND vs AUS: Australia attain number one spot in ODIs after 2-1 series win over India

Former Australia batter Shane Watson feels that Steve Smith shouldn't lead the national team again as the original skipper Pat Cummins is doing a great job. Cummins' mother recently passed away due to breast cancer and the key fast bowler missed the final two matches of the recently completed Border-Gavaskar Test series to remain in Australia alongside his grieving family.

Cummins’ absence from national duty will continue throughout March, with him to sit out the three ODI matches in India. Former skipper Steve Smith took the responsibility and led Australia to a heavy 10-wicket win over India in the second ODI after suffering defeat in the first match.

<h3>Watson goes harsh on Steve Smith</h3>

"No Steve shouldn't be leading the Aussie side again as Pat Cummins is doing good. He is doing a great job as a great leader. No question Steve Smith should lead the team, " Watson told ANI.

Smith has captained Australia in 34 Tests between 2014 and 2018, including Australia's most recent Test tour of India in 2017, a controversy-marred campaign in which Smith dominated with the bat, scoring three centuries.

Steve Smith was sacked from captaincy in 2018 after he and other teammates were found guilty in a ball tempering scandal during their South Africa tour. Smith, who captained the Men in Yellow across all the formats, was sacked as a leader, and a two-year leadership ban was imposed on him.

Electing to bowl first, Australia was on the top of the Indian team from the word go. Mitchell Starc, who wrecked havoc in the first game with his early exploits, began from where he had left, dismissing young Shubman Gill on one in the first over. He then accounted for the returning Indian captain Rohit Sharma on 13 from 15 balls. Putting India’s back against the wall, Starc then removed T20 super batter Suryakumar Yadav on the first ball, trapped right in the middle – similar to how he got him out in the first ODI. This wicket sent shivers down the Indian dug out.

IND vs AUS, 2nd ODI: Steve Smith takes a blinder to remove Hardik Pandya - WATCH VIDEO

After a gruelling four-match Test series, India and Australia have locked horns in the three-match ODI series opener at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday (March 17). Both the regular captains Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins are not in action as the latter remains in Australia after his mother's passing away whereas Hitman will join the squad for the remainder ODIs after missing the series opener due to personal reasons.

In Rohit's absence, Hardik Pandya is leading Team India. After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first and have bundled out the Steve Smith-led Aussies for a paltry 188 in 35.4 overs. Md Siraj and Md Shami ended with three scalps each whereas Ravindra Jadeja took 2 for 48. Captain Hardik removed the dangerman Smith with KL Rahul grabbing a sharp low catch. Australia captain Patrick Cummins will not be returning to India to lead the side in the upcoming three-match ODI series and Steve Smith will be the stand-in captain. Notably, Cummins flew back to Australia after the second Test of Border-Gavaskar series, initially for the third Test only, to attend his ailing mother.

Cummins then stayed back after his mother passed away and will continue to stay there for some more time. Steve Smith, meanwhile, led in his absence in the last two Test of the series, which India won 2-1.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald also said that Cummins is still taking care of what has happened.

"Pat won’t be coming back, he’s still taking care of what’s happened back home," he said. "Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process," added McDonald.

The Australian cricket board, however, has not named a replacement for Cummins in the squad which now has 15 players in it.

Opening batsman David Warner and spinner Ashton Agar, however, will be available for the series. David Warner had flown back to Australia due to a fractured arm after the second Test and Ashton Agar was sent back as well midway through the series.

Apart from them, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh will also be making a comeback following a long absence due to injuries. Pacers Josh Hazlewood and Jhye Richardson, however, won't be available due to injuries. Nathan Ellis has been named as as a replacement for Richardson though.&nbsp;

Coach McDonald, while talking about the balance of the team, said he has had a conversation around it and there'll be a mix of combinations leading into the ODI World Cup, scheduled to played in India later this year.

So we've got to answer a few of those questions," he said.

The ODI series starts on March 17 in Mumbai with next two matches scheduled in Vishakhapatnam and Chennai on March 19 and 22, respectively.

Steve Smith to lead Australia in India ODIs as Pat Cummins stays home after mother's death

Australia's Steve Smith, who acted as the stand-in captain for the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series, has given a subdued warning to India, against whom the Aussies will play in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in England in June.

Speaking after the Ahmedabad Test at the press conference, Smith said, "There's usually reasonable bounce and pace for an English wicket. It's probably as close as you get to Australia potentially in terms of pace and bounce. So yeah, it's going to be a great Test match and the guys are looking forward to it."

The match will be played at the Oval and Smith said that it wears on as the game progresses but is a great place to play cricket.

"You know, the Oval, the wicket there can take some spin at times, particularly as the game wears on. So could be interesting in terms of what what sort of wicket we get. But, you know, it's a great place to play cricket."

Australia made into the WTC final with surety after winning the Indore Test, the third of the four-match Border-Gavaskar series, by nine wickets. India, who had won the first Two Tests of the series in Nagpur and Delhi, respectively, made into the final only after New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in a thrilling Test match on the last ball by two wickets.

India had to win the Border-Gavaskar trophy with a 3-0 or 3-1 margin to stay independent of the outcome of Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Test.&nbsp;

The fourth Test in Ahmedabad, however, was headed for a draw soon after the first session on the final day. After scoring 480 runs in the first innings, Australia conceded a 91-run lead after India scored 571/9.

Australia, however, didn't give any early wickets to India in the second innings and the match was called a draw with the visitors being at 175/2 in the third session.

'Looking forward to...': Australia's Steve Smith issues warning to India ahead of WTC 2023 final at the Oval

The fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series ended in a draw and with that India won the series 2-1. Steve Smith, Australia's stand-in captain for the last two Tests, speaking at the presentation ceremony after the Ahmedabad Tests, pointed out what was the turning point of the series.

"Did end slowly. It was pretty flat at the back end. The boys had a great time. The hospitality has been amazing. The crowd has been amazing. We started to play better as the series went on. The madness in one hour in Delhi cost us that game," said Smith.

Notably, Delhi hosted the second Test of the series and Australia, who were already 0-1 in the series, got bowled out for a paltry 113 in the second innings. India then chased the 115-run target with ease and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Australia, however, bounced back in the next Test in Indore and won by nine wickets.

Australia had lost eight wickets for 28 runs as they went from 85/2 to 113/10 in the second innings of the Delhi Test with Ravindra Jadeja claiming seven wickets and Ravi Ashwin taking rest three. Many of Australian players got out trying to play sweep shots for which they were criticised a lot by the former Australian players after the Test.

After winning the Indore Test, it was down to Ahmedabad if the Aussies wanted to draw the series and they started well by putting up 480 on the board in their first innings. India, however, replied equally well, thanks to centuries by Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, as they took a 91-run lead in the first innings.

The pitch in Ahmedabad was nothing compared to previous three Tests in terms of turn offered and Smith acknowledged the same.

"The wicket here was too flat for us to force a result. The spinners bowled really well. Murphy and Kuhnemann bowled with composure. Lyon bowled his best in the first innings here, the best I have seen him bowl,," Smith said.

The two sides now will face each other in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June in England.

Steve Smith, Australia's stand-in captain in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, is looking forward to a new 'game of chess' as the visitors gear up for the fourth and final Test scheduled to be played in Ahmedabad from March 9.

"It's a game of chess, every ball means something," said Smith after the Indore victory, which followed India's wins in Nagpur and Delhi.

"It's good to just move people and try to make the batter do something different and just play&nbsp;games with them," Smith said after the Indore triumph.

"It's probably my favourite place in the world to captain."&nbsp;

Australia captain Pat Cummins has remained at home because of a family illness, leaving his deputy Smith with another chance to pit his wits against India in the subcontinent, something he clearly relishes.

India, after losing the last Test by nine-wickets, will also be aiming to bounce back to tray and secure their berth in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be played in England in June. The hosts currently lead the four-match series 2-1 and a 3-1 series win will put them into the WTC final, again against Australia.

Australia clinched their place in the showpiece with their nine-wicket third Test win, completed before lunch on the third day on a treacherous Indore track.

India and Australia's prime ministers are scheduled to attend on Thursday where another sharply turning wicket is expected at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest cricket ground with a capacity of 132,000.

Joe Root's England were thrashed there twice two years ago, including inside two days in a day-night game, the shortest completed Test since 1935.

<h2>'Too much' pitch talk</h2>

Despite the local Gujarat Cricket Association's assurances of a "normal pitch", both sides are again expected to pick three spinners, though India may opt for the wrist-spin of Kuldeep Yadav instead of Axar Patel, who has taken only one wicket in the series.

India may also strengthen their batting by dropping a seam bowler and bringing in the explosive Suryakumar Yadav.

Australia's spinners Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann took full advantage of an Indore pitch officially rated as "poor" by the match referee to give Australia only their second Test victory on Indian soil since 2004.

Kuhnemann took five wickets and Lyon three as India were rolled for 109 in their first innings after opting to bat.

Usman Khawaja's 60 in a 96-run stand with Marnus Lasuschagne helped Australia to an 88-run lead, despite a late collapse from 186-4 to 197 all out.

Lyon ripped through with 8-64 as India made 163 in their second innings, before Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne&nbsp;chased down the 76-run target with ease.

India captain Rohit Sharma said he was fed up with the constant focus on the playing surfaces and wanted to focus instead on some exceptional bowling performances.

"This pitch talk is getting too much," he said after the Indore Test. "Every time we play in India it's always about the pitch.

"Out of the 10 wickets maybe one or two where the pitch did help the bowler, but other than that it was the skill of the bowler that foxed the batsman".

"It's good to just move people and try to make the batter do something different and just play games with them," Smith said after the Indore triumph. "It's probably my favourite place in the world to captain." Australia captain Pat Cummins has remained at home because of a family illness, leaving his deputy Smith with another chance to pit his wits against India in the subcontinent, something he clearly relishes. 'Too much' pitch talk Despite the local Gujarat Cricket Association's assurances of a "normal pitch", both sides are again expected to pick three spinners, though India may opt for the wrist-spin of Kuldeep Yadav instead of Axar Patel, who has taken only one wicket in the series. Lyon ripped through with 8-64 as India made 163 in their second innings, before Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne chased down the 76-run target with ease. India vs Australia: Stand-in captain Steve Smith looking forward to 'game of chess' in Ahmedabad

Steve Smith is set to lead Australia in the fourth and final Test versus India as well, with regular skipper Pat Cummins to remain in Australia with his ailing mother. The Aussie speedster's mother Maria is ill with breast cancer and is in palliative care, as reported by Cricket Australia. Thus, Cummins had skipped the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, as well -- which the visitors won by nine wickets to keep the series alive at 2-1 -- and will now also miss the series decider in Ahmedabad, starting on March 09.

Under Smith, Australia produced a clinical performance in the third Test at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Opting to bat first, Rohit Sharma-led India folded for a paltry 109 -- thanks to&nbsp;Matthew Kuhnemann's 5 for 16 -- before Australia only managed 197 but took a vital 88-run lead. In reply, India once again fell flat in their second essay; being dismissed for 163 in 60.3 overs. Chasing 76, Smith &amp; Co. chased down the target with nine wickets in hand in the morning session of Day 3.&nbsp;

Thus, Australia -- who were without Cummins -- produced a clinical performance to keep the four-match series alive, at 2-1 in India's favour.&nbsp;

After leading Australia to an emphatic win, Smith said after the game, "My time is done. It's Pat's team now. I've obviously been able to stand in this week, obviously in tough circumstances with Patty going home. Our thoughts are still with him back home."

"But India is a part of the world I love captaining ... it's probably my favourite place in the world to captain. Every ball is an event and therefore can dictate what happens after, which is something that I really love and you've got to be ahead of the game. So I thought I did it well this week and it was good fun," he added.

The fourth and final Test begins at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on March 09. Smith-led Aussies will be desperate to end the series with a 2-2 stalemate. They have already qualified for the WTC final after the Indore Test win.

India vs Australia, BGT 2022/23: Steve Smith set to lead in final Test in Pat Cummins' absence

Following the third Test in Indore where Australia walked away with a nine-wicket win, stand-in captain Steve Smith said his run as the skipper ends here as Pat Cummins will now take over the reins heading into the fourth Test.

"My time is done. It's Pat's team now," Smith said after leading Australia to its second win on Indian soil under his captaincy.

Meanwhile, it was after the end of the Delhi Test when Cummins flew home to be with his ailing mother&nbsp;and was said to be returning before the start of the Indore game. That eventually didn’t happen as Smith led in his absence;&nbsp;and now as per the latest reports, he could well lead the side in the Ahmedabad Test also as Cummins is likely to stay back and spend some more time with his mother.

As reported in the Times of India (TOI), the Australian head coach Andrew McDonald is in touch with Cummins and is also keeping a tab on his status ahead of the final Test that begins in five days'&nbsp;time. McDonald said while Pat is very much invested in what’s happening here in India, for him to stay home in Sydney with his mother is what is required now.

"He's obviously dealing with what he's dealing with at home but he's still so invested in this group," McDonald told reporters on Saturday. "Our thoughts are still with him and his family at this difficult time.

"We're in constant contact with him daily, so at the moment he's not here and the test match is a few days away, so we'll discuss with Pat on a daily basis," the coach added.

Indore win seals Australia’s place in the WTC final

After winning the third Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, Australia qualified for the finals of the WTC that will take place at the Oval in London on June 7th. For India to now qualify for the finals, they must beat the touring side in the final Test, or even if they lose or the match is drawn, they then must hope for New Zealand to win their home two-match Test series against Sri Lanka to ensure India is staying ahead on the points tally.

WTC 2023 Points Table: On Friday (March 03), Australia thrashed India by nine wickets to win the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy to keep the series alive at 2-1. Moreover, Australia also qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be held at The Oval, London in early June, with their famous triumph on a turning track at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Resuming Day 3, Australia started their run-chase, where they needed 76 for a win, and lost Usman Khawaja in the first over. Nonetheless, Travis Head's 49* and Marnus Labuschagne's 28 not out led the Steve Smith-led Aussies to victory, and through to the final of the second cycle of the WTC. The damage was done for India after they only managed 109, opting to bat first on Day 1 on Wednesday (March 01), before conceding a vital 88-run lead to the visitors -- who were all-out for 197 -- on a tough batting pitch tough. In their second essay, Rohit Sharma & Co. fell flat once again with Nathan Lyon taking 8 for 64 (ending with an 11-wicket haul in the match). Being all-out for 163, India gave a paltry 76-run target which the Aussies chased down in style during the first session of Day 3. With this win, Australia have become the first side to enter the WTC final. India have to wait for the final Test, in Ahmedabad and need a win to not depend on other results and meet the Aussies in the summit clash. Sri Lanka is the only other team who can play spoilsport for India and reach the final if they whitewash hosts New Zealand in their forthcoming two-match series. When you are playing on challenging pitches, we need to be brave. We allowed their bowlers to bowl on one particular spot. Not taking any credit away from their bowlers. especially Nathan Lyon, he kept challenging us hitting the right lengths. When the bowler is trying to do that, gotta be a little brave which I thought we were not. Things happen like that, but we can take a lot of credit about how we batted in the first 2 games." On the way forward, he opined, "Its all about everyone coming together and chipping in. We want few guys stand up and put their hand up to take the team through. You will falter in your plans and that's what happened in this game, we didn't adapt as well as we would have liked to." The fourth and final Test begins in Ahmedabad on March 09.

Day 2 of the third and penultimate Test between India and Australia, in Indore, saw Australia get dismissed for 197 -- resuming the day from 156 for 4 -- after dismissing Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for 109 on Day 1. In their second essay, India only managed 163 all-out , setting a paltry 76-run target for the visitors. The third day will commence, on Friday (March 03), with Australia needing only 76 to make the four-match series scoreline 2-1.&nbsp;

From India's perspective, only Cheteshwar Pujara looked comfortable in the middle during their second innings. While India had a chance to wipe out the deficit and set a challenging target but none of their star batters made a mark. Pujara was the lone warrior who fell for an impressive 142-ball 59. He was dismissed by Nathan Lyon -- who returned with a stunning 8 for 64 -- but stand-in captain Steve Smith won all the accolodes for Pujara's dismissal by pulling off a one-handed stunner at leg slip. Pujara flicked a delivery off Lyon and it went low to Smith's right hand. The 33-year-old was proactive enough to grab the ball in a flash and send Pujara packing. Here's the video:

After Pujara's dismissal, India were reduced to 155 for 8. From thereon, Axar Patel tried to go big and add to India's lead before he ran out of partners as the home side got dismissed for 163 in 60.3 overs. After stumps on Day 2, Pujara told the broadcasters, "It is a tough pitch to bat on. It is not easy and you need to trust your defence, you need to make sure to get to the pitch of the ball and try to judge the length early. You need to do that on such pitches, if you keep defending then there's one ball which will bounce and hit your glove, you need to find the right balance between attack and defence."

On his dismissal and Smith's brilliance, Pujara said, "It was a brilliant catch by Smith. Bit disappointed, the way things were coming along.. a partnership with Axar, we could have gotten a few more. IND vs AUS 3rd Test: On Wednesday (March 01), India locked horns with Australia in the third and penultimate Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Having an unassailable 2-0 lead, India are very close to finalising a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final.&nbsp;

India have been top-notch in the first two Tests versus Australia -- banking on Rohit Sharma's form, lower-order runs&nbsp;and spinners -- to win the back-to-back games and are just a step away from entering the WTC final, for the second time in a row. Here's what they need to do in the third and penultimate Test to book a slot in the summit clash, to be held at The Oval, London on June 07-11:&nbsp;

India are 2-0 ahead in the series and just need another win in the ongoing Test to cement a place in the WTC final. While India can go through even if they lose the next two encounters (but in such a case, they will have to depend on other results; hoping&nbsp;for Sri Lanka to not win their remaining two Tests), they will confirm a place with a 3-0, 3-1 or 4-0 scoreline. Hence, India already have one&nbsp;foot in the WTC finale.

On the other hand, Pat Cummins-led Australia -- who are the No. 1 ranked side in the purest format -- have so far had a forgettable trip to India. After being 2-0 down, they have a herculean task to end the series with a 2-2 scoreline. A 0-3 or 0-4 scoreline looks likely at this stage. For them to qualify, they can even do so despite being whitewashed by India. In such a scenario, they will have to hope for Sri Lanka to not whitewash the hosts New Zealand in their forthcoming two-match Test series. It is to be noted that Tim Southee &amp; Co. have not lost a home Test series since early 2017.&nbsp;

Indore Test, Day 1

At the coin toss on Day 1&nbsp;of the Indore Test, Rohit called it right as India chose to bat first. India made two changes in their playing XI with former vice-captain and woefully out of form KL Rahul being sidelined whereas Md Shami was rested (with Shubman Gill and Umesh Yadav being the replacements, respectively).&nbsp;

At the toss, Rohit said, "We will have a bat first. It is a pretty good dressing room and like you said the morale is high. The guys are confident about their skills which is a good thing moving forward. We have played a lot of cricket (here) but this one (surface) is slightly different. Looks little dry and you have to adapt your skills and be at it all the time. We aren't there yet (WTC final) and we have to come and win this game, we have to try and repeat the things we did in the first two Tests. It is important to stay present. We have made two changes - Gill comes in place of KL. We have rested Shami and Umesh comes in."

Meanwhile, Australia are without regular skipper Cummins, who is in Australia to look after his ailing mother. In his absence, Steve Smith leads the side as they trail 0-2.&nbsp;

Playing XIs:

Australia: Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith(c), Peter Handscomb, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann

India&nbsp;Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Srikar Bharat(w), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj

After opting to bat first, Rohit-led India are on the back foot currently, having lost half of their side for 45.

How has Team India fared in the second cycle of WTC?&nbsp;

After losing the inaugural WTC final, to New Zealand, in 2021, India have had a decent run in the ongoing second cycle. They started the new cycle with a 2-1 lead over hosts England in the 2021 five-match series, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate a year later, before winning a home series versus the Kiwis 1-0. They lost 1-2 to South Africa during their tour of the African nation in early 2022; prompting&nbsp;Virat Kohli to step down as the red-ball captain.&nbsp;

Rohit took over from there on and while he missed a few games, India went on to beat Sri Lanka 2-0 at home and also whitewash Bangladesh in their own backyard in December 2022.&nbsp;

At present, India are favourites to whitewash the Aussie and storm into the WTC final. Currently, it looks like it will be a mouth-watering India versus Australia finale in the second cycle of the WTC (unless third-positioned Sri Lanka pulls off a surprise in NZ).&nbsp;Will India end their ICC-title drought by winning the second edition of the WTC? Only time will tell...

We aren't there yet (WTC final) and we have to come and win this game, we have to try and repeat the things we did in the first two Tests. It is important to stay present. We have made two changes - Gill comes in place of KL. We have rested Shami and Umesh comes in." Meanwhile, Australia are without regular skipper Cummins, who is in Australia to look after his ailing mother. In his absence, Steve Smith leads the side as they trail 0-2. Playing XIs: Australia: Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith(c), Peter Handscomb, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann India Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Srikar Bharat(w), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj After opting to bat first, Rohit-led India are on the back foot currently, having lost half of their side for 45. How has Team India fared in the second cycle of WTC? After losing the inaugural WTC final, to New Zealand, in 2021, India have had a decent run in the ongoing second cycle. They started the new cycle with a 2-1 lead over hosts England in the 2021 five-match series, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate a year later, before winning a home series versus the Kiwis 1-0. They lost 1-2 to South Africa during their tour of the African nation in early 2022; prompting Virat Kohli to step down as the red-ball captain. Rohit took over from there on and while he missed a few games, India went on to beat Sri Lanka 2-0 at home and also whitewash Bangladesh in their own backyard in December 2022. At present, India are favourites to whitewash the Aussie and storm into the WTC final. Currently, it looks like it will be a mouth-watering India versus Australia finale in the second cycle of the WTC (unless third-positioned Sri Lanka pulls off a surprise in NZ). Will India end their ICC-title drought by winning the second edition of the WTC? Only time will tell...

IND vs AUS, Indore Test: EXPLAINED! How Rohit Sharma & Co. can confirm a slot in WTC final

Australian captain Pat Cummins will miss the third Test against India in Indore as he is&nbsp;staying back with his ailing mother who is currently in palliative care. In his absence, former skipper Steve Smith will leave the side in the third Test that begins on March 1st. Earlier, following the second Test in Delhi, Cummins flew home to be with his ill mother and vowed to return in time for the Indore match. However, he has now released a statement saying he’s staying back with his family in this hour and has thanked Cricket Australia for supporting him.

"I have decided against returning to India at this time as my mother is ill and in palliative care. I feel I am best being here with my family. I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding," Pat Cummins said in a statement.

Meanwhile, not only Cummins, Australia will also miss the services of injured players in opener David Warner and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, both of whom boarded the same flight back home with Pat. While David suffered concussion and an elbow fracture during the Delhi Test, Hazlewood was benched since the beginning of the tour as he continues to recover from the Achilles problem.

While Cricket Australia hasn’t named any replacement for Cummins, fit now Mitchell Starc is likely to take his place in the team for the upcoming Test. Whereas, Mitchell Swepson, who went home after the end of Nagpur match for the birth of his first child, will also be available for selection.

Struggling Australia to avoid series whitewash

To say that Aussies have struggled against the spin on this tour would be an understatement. Of the 40 wickets that have fallen across two Tests, 32 of them have gone to the spinners with Ravindra Jadeja coming out to be the biggest threat. While he contributed big time with both bat and ball in the first Test by scoring 70 and picking up a five-for in the first innings, he picked his career-best figures of seven for 42 in the second innings of the Delhi Test.

Now for Australia to avoid getting in a situation where they could be out of the race for a spot in the World Test Championship finals, they have to ensure they are at least winning one game in the remaining two Tests. Under Smith, they will fancy their chances of making a return in the Border-Gavaskar series.

IND vs AUS: Cummins to stay back in Australia with ailing mother, Steve Smith named captain for Indore Test

Australia great and former skipper Allan Border was left fuming with the Australian batters&nbsp;during the first Test in Nagpur. The Aussie great wants the current crop of Aussie players&nbsp;to play with harder edge and stop giving 'thumbs up' to bowlers after getting squared up. The case in point is Australia's best batter, Steve Smith -&nbsp;who is known for his unconventional batting style, who after completely missing a ball from Ravindra Jadeja&nbsp;acknowledged the bowler and gave a thumbs-up. Border clearly wasn't pleased with the gesture, and did not mince any words while criticising Smith's actions on Fox Cricket.&nbsp;

“Play with a harder edge. I mean, we’re giving blokes the thumbs up when they’re beating us outside the off stump,” Border said. “What the hell is going on? That is just ridiculous. Don’t go stupid, but Australia play hard nose cricket. We’re even giving someone thumbs up … bloody hell,” he added while taking to Fox Cricket.

IND vs AUS: Allan Border livid with Steve Smith for showing 'thumbs-up' to Jadeja after getting beaten

It’s fair to say Australia struggled big time on the Nagpur wicket which they had already deemed ‘poor’ and ‘doctored’ even before the match&nbsp;got started. However, following what happened in two and a half days, its sure that there were no demons on the pitch, as one team scored 400 while the other couldn’t even compile a total of 300 across two innings. Steve Smith, who was clearly Australia’s best batter in this Test, was upset with his side’s approach who were on the back foot from the ball one. Speaking to the media following an innings and 132-run defeat on Saturday, Smith said Australia’s batting in the first innings wasn’t up to the mark.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, the visitors had lost both David Warner and Usman Khawaja early before Marnus Labuschagne and Smith began the rescue act. After a good first session, the pair fell prey to Ravindra Jadeja who returned with a five-for in the first innings. As a result, Australia’s first innings got folded on 177.

Ruing the missed chance of scoring somewhere near 300 on the pitch where India hit 400 in their first innings, Smith while speaking with Star Sports said, “Our batting in the first innings wasn’t up to the mark. I don’t think 170 was enough. There weren’t as many demons as there, probably, were today. The few of us who got in and got started didn’t go on with it. We needed to get somewhere around 300 and put pressure on Indian batters.”

For India, captain Rohit Sharma (120), Jadeja (70) and even Axar Patel (84) scored huge runs and showed everyone on how to play on such tricky tracks in the subcontinent.

Meanwhile, in Australia’s second innings, no batter barring Smith could score 20 or more runs. Expressing his concern over the approach with which the Aussies batted, Smith said, “If the wicket is good, particularly in the first innings, that’s where we have to get the bulk of the runs. In the second innings, you have got to be a little braver, and proactive, trying to put pressure back on the bowlers as much as possible.

“When they are able to bowl six balls at a batter, they really enjoy that, they feel like they are in the game. So, it’s necessary to put some pressure back on them. Try and find areas where you can get off strike,” Smith added.

Come the second Test, Australia will field a stronger XI and are expected to come all guns blazing in their quest to end their Test series win drought over India. The second match&nbsp;begins in Delhi on February 17th.

Australia's lone fighter in Nagpur Test Steve Smith upset with team's timid approach following heavy defeat

In what comes as another blow to the already injury-marred Australian team, all-rounder Cameron Green is now more or less ruled out of the first Test against India, starting on February 9th in Nagpur. Green, who suffered a fractured finger during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa last year, was on the road to recovery; but as per the latest developments, he is running out of time to get fit for the Nagpur game. As per the former Australian captain Steve Smith, Green didn’t bat in nets at the VCA Stadium but did some fitness and light centre-wicket bowling.

"I don't think he (Green) is going to play. I don't think he's even faced fast bowlers yet. So I dare say he won't be playing but who knows. I'm not entirely sure. We'll wait and see. But it's unlikely, I think," Smith said as quoted by the ESPNcricinfo.

Not only Green, Australia will also be missing the services of fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc during the first Test – both of who are ruled out due to injuries. Now in absence of three out-right seamers, Australia might rope in an extra batter in either Matthew Renshaw or Peter Handscomb and will also be prompted to play two more spinners.

Smith said after looking at the surface the management could be lured into playing more spinners given Green is also not around, but didn’t comment on the final XI, saying the selectors will have a look at the pitch themselves and will take the call accordingly.

India’s run in Tests at home is exceptional – let alone losing a Test match in a series, the Indian team hasn’t lost a Test series at home since losing to England 11 years back in 2012. Australia, considered as the most dominant unit in this game, has had their struggles against India in India. Having last won a Test series in this part of the world almost two decades back, the Oz are now aiming to break the ice in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series, which is scheduled to begin in Nagpur on February 9th.

In a recent video uploaded by the Cricket Australia, the touring side was asked about their opinions on a Test series win in India – to which a few of the star players shared their thoughts. Former captain and arguably the best Test batter now, Steve Smith said winning a Test in India let alone a series is very difficult in itself. He added that a Test series win in India is clearly bigger than winning an away Ashes.

Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has responded to Steve Smith's remarks about not playing any tour games ahead of the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The off-spinner said it was not a big thing and that Smith was playing mind games. “Australia are not playing any tour matches this time. This is not new. Even India avoids tour games when they go on a few overseas tours," said Ashwin on his YouTube channel. "Since Team India’s schedule is packed with international games, it is not possible to turn up for practice games with the same intensity." #TeamIndia have begun their preparations for the Border Gavaskar Trophy ahead of the 1st Test in Nagpur.#INDvAUS pic.twitter.com/21NlHzLwGA — BCCI (@BCCI) February 3, 2023 × Australia are not playing any tour game in their preparation for the series. Instead, the visitors have preferred to hold a four-day training camp at KSCA Stadium in Alur. Smith had said, “We got a green wicket in Brabourne and a completely opposite one in the first Test (during the 2017 series). In all fairness, it was a rank turner in Pune.” “We might have given them a green track, but nobody plans all these things. However, Australia are known for their mind games and sledges before a series. They love doing that. It’s their style of cricket,” added Ashiwn. Read more: 'Last time they gave us a green top', Steve Smith explains why Australia is not playing a tour game this time When asked if Australia needed to play a tour match ahead of the gruelling one-month Test series, Smith had replied in negative. "We'll wait and see when we hit the ground. I think we've made the right decision to not play a tour match. Like I said, last time they dished up a green top for us (in a tour game) and we barely faced any spin, so it's kind of irrelevant," Smith told news.com.au. Australia will be coming into the series, having lost the previous three iterations of the BGT, with 2018 and 2020 defeats coming in its own backyard. It will take some special effort from the Australians if they are to beat India in India. In the last decade, India have only lost two Test matches. Ironically, Australia beat India in one of those Test matches and it came on a vicious turning Pune pitch. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

'Oz are known for their mind games': R Ashwin responds to Steve Smith's tour match remark

India went past Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the ongoing home leg but have their toughest opponents next in the form of Australia as both sides will lock horns in the upcoming edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which gets underway on February 09 in Nagpur. The last three Test series between India and Australia have lived up to expectations -- with a lot of drama and action on and off the 22-yard cricket strip -- and another rollicking series is on the cards between the two heavyweights with the ICC World Test Championship final tickets up for grabs.&nbsp;

Ahead of the marquee series, former Aussie stumper Ian Healy made a glaring claim. He feels if the pitches are fair, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. will win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since early 2017. It is to be noted that the last three editions have gone in favour of India, with them beating Australia twice in a row on their home soil as well.&nbsp;

"I think if they produce fair Indian wickets, that are good batting wickets, to start with, (that) probably spin and spin pretty consistently but spin a long way, late in the match we (Australia) win," Healy said on 'SENQ Breakfast'.&nbsp;

Healy further pointed out, "I'm worried about (Mitchell) Starc and (Nathan) Lyon in the first Test if they're unfair wickets which I've seen in the last series, where balls were jumping ridiculously and sliding down low from day one, I think India play those conditions better than us." Thus, he cited, "I want the players to be very aware if they are escaping that pressure (from the locals) if you're escaping that pressure and hiding in your room using the golf simulator I think you've got to do something else."

Australia will win Border Gavaskar Trophy if India produce fair pitches, claims former Aussie stumper

In a shocking call from the team management, Australia had earlier decided to not play a tour game in India ahead of the marquee Border-Gavaskar series that begins on February 9th in Nagpur. Speaking ahead of their departure to India, former Australia captain Steve Smith said the reason why they are not playing a tour match this time is that when they played one in 2017, the BCCI had prepared a green top for the same that&nbsp;didn’t allow them to practice on turning&nbsp;tracks. As a result, the Oz struggled against the spin-heavy Indian bowling line-up and lost the Test series 2-1.

Learning from their past experience, Smith said the management did the right thing by cancelling the ‘irrelevant’ scheduled tour game in India.

"Hopefully, we get really good training facilities where the ball is likely to do what it's likely to do out in the middle, and we can get our practice in," Smith added.

Having already lost the previous three Test series against India, including the last two at home in 2018 and 2020, Australia will be eyeing an improbable series win this time. Smith, who had been part of the touring Aussie team to India on two occasions in the past, said he would like to get back with a win this time – something that he hasn’t achieved as a player in his decorated career so far.

"It's (the Test series in India) certainly huge. I don't know if it's (winning in India) the final frontier. I've never won there, I've been there twice (for Tests), and it’s always difficult playing there. We've got some challenges in front of us, but the guys are ready for it," the right-handed batter said.

Meanwhile, ace seamer Mitchell Starc is ruled out of the first Test due to a finger injury while a decision on all-rounder Cameron Green will be taken ahead of the start of the match.

'Last time they gave us a green top', Steve Smith explains why Australia is not playing a tour game this time

Australia star cricketer Steve Smith has touched his peak form just at the right time. Playing for Sydney Sixers in the ongoing season of the Big Bash League (BBL), the veteran batter smashed his consecutive hundred on Saturday while opening the batting, showing signs of things to come ahead of the all-important Border-Gavaskar series against India. Taking on the Sydney Thunders at the SCG, Smith went bonkers smashing an unbeaten 125 off 66 balls that included five fours and nine massive sixes.

His innings was well versed with shots all across the ground and against some of the smartest bowlers in this format. Coming off an incredible hundred the other day against the former winners, Adelaide Strikers – Smith scored 101 off 56 balls, hitting five fours and seven huge sixes.

Courtesy his outstanding innings and an all-round bowling performance from Sixers, they won the match by 125 runs.

Smith joined Sixers’ BBL camp right after the South Africa Test series at home that Australia won 2-0. Even there, he was the highest-scorer with 231 runs in four innings from three Tests, averaging 57.75. Against the Windies in the series prior to that, Smith notched up his first double hundred of this season too. In two matches played, the right-hand batter scored 255 runs at an impressive average of 127.50.

Considering his superb run of form in both Tests and T20Is, Australia will be banking on his shoulders to bail them out if a tricky situation arises during the forthcoming India series that begins on February 9th in Nagpur.

Meanwhile, on his last tour to India in 2017, Smith scored three centuries in four games. While in Pune he hit a gritty 109 in the second innings, Smith notched up his second ton of the series in Ranchi – smashing 178*. Then in the final Test in Dharamshala, Steve scored 111 in the first innings, ending the four-match series with 499 runs to his name.

This time as well, he is expected to pile up runs against a daunting spin-heavy Indian attack.

BBL: Steve Smith touches peak form ahead of Border-Gavaskar series with successive tons for Sydney Sixers

Australia batter Steve Smith dismissed reports of him contemplating taking early retirement from Tests saying he is currently enjoying his game and that he is not going anywhere. Following day two’s play Smith was asked about his thoughts on appearing in the home summer next season, to which he said he doesn’t know, raising doubts over his retirement plans.

Since there was no play on day three because of rain, Smith caught up with the media professionals who were quick to take his reaction on the retirement talks. Putting all that under the mat, the veteran Aussie batter told Fox Sports, "I'm not going anywhere; I'm comfortable with where everything's at."

Adding that Australia has a few important tours coming up including the Border-Gavaskar series against India in February-March and then the Ashes in June-July, Smith said he is excited about them and remains hungry for more success.

Steve Smith clears air on 'early retirement' talks, says he's enjoying his game and not going anywhere

On Thursday (January 05), Steve Smith started 2023 with a bang by slamming yet another hundred in the purest format during Day 2 of the third and final Test between Australia and South Africa, at the SCG, Sydney. In the second day's play of the New Year's Test, Smith and Usman Khawaja were going strong and the former completed his 30th Test ton to surpass Sir Don Bradman's tally (29).

Bradman ended his career with a total of 29 Test centuries for the Aussies, in 80 innings of 52 Test matches. Smith, on the other hand, surpassed his tally&nbsp;in his 162nd inning in his 92nd Test. The former Aussie captain is now also the joint-third on the list of leading century-makers for Australia in whites. Former captains Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) lead the list with Smith and&nbsp;former opening batter Matthew Hayden with&nbsp;30 centuries apiece. Smith will aim to go past Waugh's tally during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in India from next month, and narrow&nbsp;the gap with Ponting.

En route to his special ton at his home ground, Smith also went past&nbsp;both Michael Clarke and Hayden to become the fourth-leading run scorer for Australia in Tests. The 33-year-old&nbsp;is now only behind&nbsp;Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927),&nbsp;with his tally reading&nbsp;8,647 following his 104 in the ongoing Test.

Bradman ended his career with a total of 29 Test centuries for the Aussies, in 80 innings of 52 Test matches. Smith, on the other hand, surpassed his tally in his 162nd inning in his 92nd Test. The former Aussie captain is now also the joint-third on the list of leading century-makers for Australia in whites. Former captains Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) lead the list with Smith and former opening batter Matthew Hayden with 30 centuries apiece. Smith will aim to go past Waugh's tally during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in India from next month, and narrow the gap with Ponting. En route to his special ton at his home ground, Smith also went past both Michael Clarke and Hayden to become the fourth-leading run scorer for Australia in Tests. The 33-year-old is now only behind Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927), with his tally reading 8,647 following his 104 in the ongoing Test. Run-machine Steve Smith scores 30th ton in SCG Test to surpasses Don Bradman's tally, breaks several records

Australia batter Steve Smith hints at an early Test retirement following his record-breaking hundred against South Africa in the first innings of the Sydney Test on Thursday. After hitting his 30th Test century&nbsp;on day 2, Smith not only broke several records – including crossing Don Bradman and Michael Clarke to become Australia’s fourth-highest run-getter in Tests, he broke plenty hearts too with his answer to when does he plan to step aside from this format.

Clearly, Smith has been one of Australia’s best&nbsp;players in the past decade. Having started his Test career in 2010 as a leg-spinner, Smith ended up scoring 8647 in 162 innings at an astonishing average of 60.89. With 37 fifties, four double hundreds and 30 centuries so far, he is heads and shoulders ahead of his contemporaries. &nbsp;

Upon being asked if he would be featuring for the Australian team in the upcoming summers, the veteran batter didn’t respond with yes, and instead said, “I don’t know. We’ll see.”

Briefing further on the same, Smith said he is currently enjoying his cricket and he doesn’t know when he will hang his boots.

“I’m enjoying it at the moment. I really can’t say how long I’ll play for. I’m not sure. Take it one tour at a time. Just enjoy it and enjoy training and trying to get better as well. Whilst I’m doing that I’m happy playing. But I don’t know how long it’ll last,” the former Test captain said.

Currently leading the runs chart in this series with 231 runs in four innings, Smith completed his first hundred of 2023 in the first innings of this Test. Accompanying Usman Khawaja, who is also batting at an unbeaten 195, Smith scored 102 off 192 balls hitting 11 fours and two sixes.

Following the ongoing Test series against South Africa at home, Australia will&nbsp;travelling to India for the Border-Gavaskar series and then to England in June for the Ashes. It would be interesting to see how his Test career pans out after that.

Ashes might be more than six months away but England pacer James Anderson has already started with the mind games. Anderson believes that Australia will not be able to cope with 'Bazball' cricket that England has been playing in the longest format of the game.&nbsp;

"Maybe the Aussies might be more brash than him [Stokes], but there might be something deep down where they’re not sure how they’re going to approach it against us," Anderson was quoted as saying.&nbsp;

'Bazball' is the nickname given to coach Brendon McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes' philosophy of playing super attacking cricket. The team imbibes the notion that attack is the best form of defence.&nbsp;

The approach has yielded significant results for England as they have managed to beat the like if India, South Africa and now Pakistan.&nbsp;

Though confident about his team's abilities, Anderson added that Australia will look to come hard against England's 'Bazball' strategy.&nbsp;

"Having played against them a lot, I’m sure they’ll try to come back just as hard as they can."

Such has been the effect of England's attacking cricket that Anderson is mulling extending his international cricket.&nbsp;

"I have been around for 20 years and [Stokes'] attacking mindset is making me think differently about the game," he said. "It has been a breath of fresh air and I feel I could carry on for a number of years in this regime."

However, Australian batting mainstay Steve Smith has cast aspersions over the sustainability of the brand of cricket that England have employed in recent times.&nbsp;

"Guys just keep joking about it – I think Ronnie has had enough of hearing about 'Baz-ball' to be honest – it's good fun to joke about.&nbsp;It's been exciting. I'm just intrigued to see how long it lasts, if it's sustainable,"

'Australia will not be able to handle Bazball', says James Anderson ahead of next years' Ashes

Following Australia’s Test series win over the West Indies in a Day/Night Test in Adelaide on Sunday, stand-in captain Steve Smith came out in support of David Warner over leadership role. Alongside Cameron Bancroft, Warner and Smith were other two players who were suspended for one year by Cricket Australia (CA) for their involvement in Sandpaper Gate back in 2018. Though Smith was barred from holding any leadership role across formats for 12 months, Warner was handed a life ban for the same.

Speaking on matter that has again gained spotlight after Warner’s manager laid open allegations on CA claiming they knew about everything beforehand, Steve Smith backed his teammate saying banning someone for life for captaincy when he has served the punishment like others is fundamentally wrong.

"From my point of view, banning someone for life from leadership is just fundamentally wrong," Smith told media on Sunday afternoon. "David served his time like I did."

David is regarded as one of the leaders in that group, having already proved his worth in the past by winning IPL title in 2016 with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Now, with Australia slated to play South Africa in the three-match Test series starting December 17th at the Gabba, Smith wants Warner to keep this noise away and get on with the batting. He believes since Warner has decided to let go of the review – of allowing him to get in line for leadership roles, David can do what he does best – smashing runs at the top.

"For us, we know he's a leader around the group, and on and off the field he's doing a tremendous job. It's been a difficult one for him, it's been a difficult week,” Smith said.

"David has said he's done and dusted (with the review) and wants to get on with it. He's got our full support. Hopefully he can have a really big series for us against South Africa with the bat."

Against the West Indies, Steve Smith scored 255 runs in two matches while Warner could manage a mere 102 across four innings.
