Notably, Delhi hosted the second Test of the series and Australia, who were already 0-1 in the series, got bowled out for a paltry 113 in the second innings. India then chased the 115-run target with ease and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Australia, however, bounced back in the next Test in Indore and won by nine wickets.

Australia had lost eight wickets for 28 runs as they went from 85/2 to 113/10 in the second innings of the Delhi Test with Ravindra Jadeja claiming seven wickets and Ravi Ashwin taking rest three. Many of Australian players got out trying to play sweep shots for which they were criticised a lot by the former Australian players after the Test.

After winning the Indore Test, it was down to Ahmedabad if the Aussies wanted to draw the series and they started well by putting up 480 on the board in their first innings. India, however, replied equally well, thanks to centuries by Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, as they took a 91-run lead in the first innings.

The pitch in Ahmedabad was nothing compared to previous three Tests in terms of turn offered and Smith acknowledged the same.

"The wicket here was too flat for us to force a result. The spinners bowled really well. Murphy and Kuhnemann bowled with composure. Lyon bowled his best in the first innings here, the best I have seen him bowl,," Smith said.

The two sides now will face each other in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June in England.

India, after losing the last Test by nine-wickets, will also be aiming to bounce back to tray and secure their berth in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be played in England in June. The hosts currently lead the four-match series 2-1 and a 3-1 series win will put them into the WTC final, again against Australia.

Australia clinched their place in the showpiece with their nine-wicket third Test win, completed before lunch on the third day on a treacherous Indore track.

India and Australia's prime ministers are scheduled to attend on Thursday where another sharply turning wicket is expected at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest cricket ground with a capacity of 132,000.

Joe Root's England were thrashed there twice two years ago, including inside two days in a day-night game, the shortest completed Test since 1935.

<h2>'Too much' pitch talk</h2>

Despite the local Gujarat Cricket Association's assurances of a "normal pitch", both sides are again expected to pick three spinners, though India may opt for the wrist-spin of Kuldeep Yadav instead of Axar Patel, who has taken only one wicket in the series.

India may also strengthen their batting by dropping a seam bowler and bringing in the explosive Suryakumar Yadav.

Australia's spinners Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann took full advantage of an Indore pitch officially rated as "poor" by the match referee to give Australia only their second Test victory on Indian soil since 2004.

Kuhnemann took five wickets and Lyon three as India were rolled for 109 in their first innings after opting to bat.

Usman Khawaja's 60 in a 96-run stand with Marnus Lasuschagne helped Australia to an 88-run lead, despite a late collapse from 186-4 to 197 all out.

Lyon ripped through with 8-64 as India made 163 in their second innings, before Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne&nbsp;chased down the 76-run target with ease.

India captain Rohit Sharma said he was fed up with the constant focus on the playing surfaces and wanted to focus instead on some exceptional bowling performances.

"This pitch talk is getting too much," he said after the Indore Test. "Every time we play in India it's always about the pitch.

"Out of the 10 wickets maybe one or two where the pitch did help the bowler, but other than that it was the skill of the bowler that foxed the batsman".

As reported in the Times of India (TOI), the Australian head coach Andrew McDonald is in touch with Cummins and is also keeping a tab on his status ahead of the final Test that begins in five days'&nbsp;time. McDonald said while Pat is very much invested in what’s happening here in India, for him to stay home in Sydney with his mother is what is required now.

"He's obviously dealing with what he's dealing with at home but he's still so invested in this group," McDonald told reporters on Saturday. "Our thoughts are still with him and his family at this difficult time.

"We're in constant contact with him daily, so at the moment he's not here and the test match is a few days away, so we'll discuss with Pat on a daily basis," the coach added.

The last three Test series between India and Australia have lived up to expectations -- with a lot of drama and action on and off the 22-yard cricket strip -- and another rollicking series is on the cards between the two heavyweights with the ICC World Test Championship final tickets up for grabs.&nbsp;

Ahead of the marquee series, former Aussie stumper Ian Healy made a glaring claim. He feels if the pitches are fair, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. will win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since early 2017. It is to be noted that the last three editions have gone in favour of India, with them beating Australia twice in a row on their home soil as well.&nbsp;

"I think if they produce fair Indian wickets, that are good batting wickets, to start with, (that) probably spin and spin pretty consistently but spin a long way, late in the match we (Australia) win," Healy said on 'SENQ Breakfast'.&nbsp;

Healy further pointed out, "I'm worried about (Mitchell) Starc and (Nathan) Lyon in the first Test if they're unfair wickets which I've seen in the last series, where balls were jumping ridiculously and sliding down low from day one, I think India play those conditions better than us." Thus, he cited, "I want the players to be very aware if they are escaping that pressure (from the locals) if you're escaping that pressure and hiding in your room using the golf simulator I think you've got to do something else."

'In Australia, you can create 13 chances and can waste a couple but they don't come along as easy in India'

I just think they have to live and breathe that pressure and have a philosophy over there," Healy cautioned Cummins-led Australia.

I just think they have to live and breathe that pressure and have a philosophy over there," Healy cautioned Cummins-led Australia. Australia's last Test series win on Indian soil came in 2004. Speaking ahead of their departure to India, former Australia captain Steve Smith said the reason why they are not playing a tour match this time is that when they played one in 2017, the BCCI had prepared a green top for the same that&nbsp;didn’t allow them to practice on turning&nbsp;tracks. As a result, the Oz struggled against the spin-heavy Indian bowling line-up and lost the Test series 2-1.

Learning from their past experience, Smith said the management did the right thing by cancelling the ‘irrelevant’ scheduled tour game in India.

"We'll wait and see when we hit the ground. I think we've made the right decision to not play a tour match. Like I said, last time they dished up a green top for us (in a tour game) and we barely faced any spin, so it's kind of irrelevant," Smith told news.com.au on Monday.

"Hopefully, we get really good training facilities where the ball is likely to do what it's likely to do out in the middle, and we can get our practice in," Smith added.

Having already lost the previous three Test series against India, including the last two at home in 2018 and 2020, Australia will be eyeing an improbable series win this time. Smith, who had been part of the touring Aussie team to India on two occasions in the past, said he would like to get back with a win this time – something that he hasn’t achieved as a player in his decorated career so far.

"It's (the Test series in India) certainly huge. I don't know if it's (winning in India) the final frontier. I've never won there, I've been there twice (for Tests), and it’s always difficult playing there. We've got some challenges in front of us, but the guys are ready for it," the right-handed batter said.

Meanwhile, ace seamer Mitchell Starc is ruled out of the first Test due to a finger injury while a decision on all-rounder Cameron Green will be taken ahead of the start of the match.

Taking on the Sydney Thunders at the SCG, Smith went bonkers smashing an unbeaten 125 off 66 balls that included five fours and nine massive sixes.

His innings was well versed with shots all across the ground and against some of the smartest bowlers in this format. Coming off an incredible hundred the other day against the former winners, Adelaide Strikers – Smith scored 101 off 56 balls, hitting five fours and seven huge sixes.

Courtesy his outstanding innings and an all-round bowling performance from Sixers, they won the match by 125 runs.

In the second day's play of the New Year's Test, Smith and Usman Khawaja were going strong and the former completed his 30th Test ton to surpass Sir Don Bradman's tally (29).

Bradman ended his career with a total of 29 Test centuries for the Aussies, in 80 innings of 52 Test matches. Smith, on the other hand, surpassed his tally&nbsp;in his 162nd inning in his 92nd Test. The former Aussie captain is now also the joint-third on the list of leading century-makers for Australia in whites. Former captains Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) lead the list with Smith and&nbsp;former opening batter Matthew Hayden with&nbsp;30 centuries apiece. Briefing further on the same, Smith said he is currently enjoying his cricket and he doesn’t know when he will hang his boots.

“I’m enjoying it at the moment. I really can’t say how long I’ll play for. I’m not sure. Take it one tour at a time. Just enjoy it and enjoy training and trying to get better as well. Whilst I’m doing that I’m happy playing. But I don’t know how long it’ll last,” the former Test captain said.

Currently leading the runs chart in this series with 231 runs in four innings, Smith completed his first hundred of 2023 in the first innings of this Test. Accompanying Usman Khawaja, who is also batting at an unbeaten 195, Smith scored 102 off 192 balls hitting 11 fours and two sixes.

Following the ongoing Test series against South Africa at home, Australia will&nbsp;travelling to India for the Border-Gavaskar series and then to England in June for the Ashes. It would be interesting to see how his Test career pans out after that.
