The Pat Cummins-led Australia will face West Indies in the two-match Test series opener in their own backyard on Wednesday (November 30). The two sides will face each other at a crucial time in the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship with many teams in the race to qualify for the next year's finale.

With regard to securing a place in the final, Cummins & Co. are better-placed than the Kraigg Brathwaite-led Windies. They will like to stretch their lead at the top in the overall standings with a 2-0 whitewash over the tourists. After this, Australia have a tough assignment in the form of a Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Team India, in the subcontinent, hence, they will like to make the most of their chances against the eighth ranked West Indies.

Australia have already announced their playing XI for the series opener in Perth. They will look to move past their T20 World Cup debacle and tick the right boxes to come close to cementing a place in the WTC final.

Australia clinched the ongoing three-match ODI series against England with a 72-run victory in the second One-Dayer at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. Having already won the first match by six wickets. Steve Smith, star of the Adelaide ODI (80* off 77) showed his class once again today, scoring 94 runs.

After winning the toss, Josh Hazlewood, the stand-in captain had no hesitation in batting first. With David Warner and Travis Head losing their wickets early, the onus fell on Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to build a partnership and take things forward.

While Marnus scored an almost run-a-ball fifty (58 off 55), Smith partnered with Mitchell Marsh, who smoked two sixes and as many fours in his half-century knock too and helped Australia reach a potent total of 280 for 8 in 50 overs.

Much like how it happened in the first ODI, Jason Roy again fell to Starc without disturbing the scorecard. A couple of balls later, Starc bowled Malan on a duck putting England on the back foot immediately. After Salt departed on a quick-fire 16-ball 23, the pair of James Vince and Sam Billings started knotting a partnership.

Both completed their respective fifties giving England little hope of making a comeback in the game. However, that didn’t last for long.

Hazlewood, in the 28th over of the game picked up Vince on 60. Then it was about time before Adam Zampa ran through England’s lower-middle order picking up four wickets in no time.

Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa run riot as Australia thrash England by 72 runs in 2nd ODI to clinch series

After warming the bench for the most part of the T20 World Cup, star Aussie batsman Steve Smith returned to style in the first ODI against England (in Adelaide) hitting an unbeaten 80 off 77 balls, helping his team win the match by six wickets. Talking about how he felt about his knock, Smith seemed elated and said he never felt this good in about six years. He further called this inning of his as close to perfection.

“It was probably the best I've felt in about six years," Smith told reporters on Friday. Smith, who has been working hard for around a year on his hands and feet to be ‘in sync’ in order to regain his lost touch, said he felt good about his batting and was happy to have some runs under his belt.

"I was just in really nice positions and I felt really good, I honestly haven't felt that way in six years or so. It's been nice to score some runs in that time and we're always looking for perfection, and for me yesterday was as close to perfection as I will get," Smith said.

He further added, "I've been working on a few things, it's almost been a six-month or 12-month process. The start of last summer, I tried to get my hands back to where they were in 2015. I feel like I'm staying a bit more side-on now and I've got my feet and hands in sync together."

Aus vs Eng: When and where to watch Australia vs England 1st ODI - IST time and streaming details

Australia's tour of South Africa in early 2018 made heads turn in the cricketing fraternity. After the series was tied at 1-1 and the third and penultimate Test was underway, Cameron Bancroft, David Warner and then Aussie skipper Steve Smith were involved in a huge controversy when the former was caught hiding a sandpaper in his pocket during the third day's play.

After an investigation, it was revealed that Smith and Warner were aware of Bancroft hiding a sandpaper while fielding. As a result, the trio were banned by Cricket Australia (CA) and the captaincy baton was passed onto Tim Paine. Paine, in his autobiography 'Tim Paine: The Price Paid', has now made a massive claim that the Faf du Plessis-led were also ball-tampering in the fourth and final Test, in Johannesburg.

"I saw it happen in the fourth Test of that series. Think about that. After everything that had happened in Cape Town, after all the headlines and bans and carry on," Paine wrote in the book as quoted by ESPNcricnifo. "I was standing at the bowlers' end in the next Test when a shot came up on the screen of a South African player at mid-off having a huge crack at the ball."

Australian legend Ian Chappell has picked Team India superstar Virat Kohli as the best Test batter of the current generation. Kohli, who is known for his incredible consistency, has been breaking records for fun across formats for a number of years now and is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

He has often been pitted against the likes of Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson among others when it comes to the best batter debate in world cricket. However, the former India captain's consistency along with his superior technique and ability to deliver in all three formats make him stand apart from his closest rivals.

In his latest column for ESPNCricinfo, Chappell dwelled into the best Test batter debate in the current era and went on to pick Kohli over the likes of Smith, Root, Williamson and Babar Azam. The Australian legend called Kohli a fine player with a great range of strokes.

However, he insisted Kohli's performances in the whites have dipped recently and he needs to rekindle his magic to catch up with others.

"Kohli is a fine player with a great stroke range, a highly competitive nature, and a thoughtful approach to batting. When asked why he doesn't indulge in typical short-form risky shots, he replied by saying, I don't want them to creep into my Test game. However, whatever the case - the ageing process, or his having retired as captain - Kohli's output has started to wane and he needs to rekindle the magic," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

"It's hard to choose the best player from that talented group. And when you consider that some old-timers preferred Victor Trumper's artistic style over the acknowledged best batter, Sir Donald Bradman, the difficulty is not surprising. From among these players on their best days, it's hard to surpass the highly competitive Kohli. His twin centuries in a failed but brave victory attempt at Adelaide Oval in 2014 remain my favourite innings among those produced by this group," he added.

Kohli, who made his Test debut for India against West Indies in June 2011, has come a long way since then. Two-three years into his Test career, Kohli was on the verge of getting dropped due to his average performances, however, backing from former captain MS Dhoni brought his Test career on track.

Kohli has been one of India's most prolific run-getters in the white over the last few years with 8074 runs in 102 matches at an average close to 50 (49.53), including 27 centuries and 28 fifties under his belt. Kohli is also India's most successful Test captain of all time with 40 wins in 68 Test matches.

Also Read: Yuvraj Singh brutally trolled for his 'welcome to 700 club' tweet congratulating Cristiano Ronaldo "Kohli is a fine player with a great stroke range, a highly competitive nature, and a thoughtful approach to batting.

Rohit Sharma-led India will face Australia in the second and penultimate T20I on Friday evening (September 23). After losing the series opener by four wickets in Mohali, the home side will be under pressure when they take on the field with the series on the line. In the last India-Australia T20I series held in India, the Aaron Finch-led Men in Yellow had inflicted a 2-0 whitewash over the then Virat Kohli & Co. and, hence, India will like to keep the series alive and settle scores in the third T20I on Sunday (September 23).

India's death-bowling woes need to be addressed at the earliest, with the T20 World Cup less than a month away. The premier pacer wasn't rushed into the playing XI during the series opener, having recently recovered from a back injury, but is expected to turn up on the field on Friday evening with the series on the line.

Aaron Finch announced his ODI retirement during Australia's home series versus New Zealand. The series finale became his last-ever appearance in the 50-over format, ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Ahead of Australia's three-match T20I series opener versus hosts India, former Aussie skipper and two-time ODI World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting has named his choice as Finch's successor in the shorter format.

Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, David Warner are among the contenders with the likes of Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, etc. also having a lot of experience under their belt to take up the role. "I think it’ll be Pat Cummins, to be honest," Ponting told host Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review. "I know he doesn’t play all the ODIs for obvious reasons, because his workload in Test cricket has been, like all the fast bowlers, very high in the last few years. I know they are very conscious of making sure that they’ve got Cummins, (Josh) Hazlewood and (Mitchell) Starc 100 percent fit and healthy for the big Test series to come around. But look, I'd be surprised if it wasn’t Pat Cummins," he opined.

On Smith's chances and Warner's name being discussed despite what happened in the Cape Town Test in early 2018 (with them being involved in the sandpaper gate fiasco), Ponting stated, "I’m just basing this on what’s happened with Steve Smith he is now the Test vice-captain again, having been the captain and really at the center of the whole controversy in Cape Town. He is now the Test vice-captain, which means obviously that if Pat Cummins ever misses a Test, then Steve Smith is going to be the captain of Australia again in Test match cricket."

"So, if that’s the case, and all being even and reasonably fair, then I think it would be OK, as far as I’m concerned, for David Warner to have his name (in the ring). Not saying that they have to make him captain, but he should be able to be in the conversation," the Delhi Capitals' head coach asserted.

The 47-year-old Punter also opened up on Finch's decision and said, "I wasn’t surprised actually. I sort of personally felt that he was probably one game away or one failure away from getting dropped anyway. That’s how bad his last 12 months have been in one-day international cricket. I think it was the right time. I actually thought it was really noble, what he said as well, that stepping down when he did, it gives the next captain a reasonable time leading getting himself and his team ready for the next World Cup.

"I was afforded a similar thing as well when I took over the captaincy, and when I stood down and Michael Clarke took over, I was very aware of what was coming up. I wanted to give the next captain a very good run into the next big tournament that they played," he signed off.

Finch retired from ODIs with 5,406 runs in 146 matches, averaging 38.89 along with 17 centuries.

Australia's Shane Watson recently offered his take on the best Test batsman in the world, surprisingly backing India's Virat Kohli over the consensus great in Pakistan's Babar Azam or compatriot Steve Smith.

Although Azam has enjoyed a great boost in his stock over the course of the recent years as one of the finest batsmen in their current form. Per the rankings that were revealed by the ICC, Azam is ranked No. 1 in T20s and ODIs and No. 3 in Tests. He has solidified himself as the only player to feature in the top three across all formats.

Cricket Australia is seemingly on a crusade to attract big-name players to participate in their domestic Big Bash League. However, they haven't enjoyed a lot of success as Steve Smith became one of the latest players to snub an offer to play in the league on home soil. The 33-year-old has expressed reluctance in joining the ranks of the Sydney Sixers.

Smith's manager, Warren Craig recently released a statement, addressing his client's reluctance to sign with the league. “At the moment, he has decided not to commit. There is a lot of cricket coming up,” Craig told domestic media outlets on Thursday.

Warner finds himself at the receiving end of the same lucrative contract that helped Cricket Australia retain the likes of Shane Warne, Shane Watson and more on domestic shores, playing in the BBL during its initial phase.

Reports suggest that Warner will be walking away with a contract that is worth at least $340,000, which is the same contract that has been offered to some of the brightest off-shore talents, who are slated to join the league. Although a majority of Warner's salary will be paid by Thunder, a fraction of the amount will also by paid by Cricket Australia.

Cricket Australia's attempt to sign big stars flounders as Steve Smith snubs offer

After Australia won the first Test by ten wickets versus hosts Sri Lanka, both sides squared off in the second and final Test in Galle on Friday (July 08). Pat Cummins & Co. opted to bat first and rode on centuries from Marnus Labuschange's first-ever ton outside Australia and Steve Smith's 109 not out to reach 298-5 at stumps on the opening day.

With Smith's 28th Test ton, the Aussie batting star finally ended his 19-month-long international century-drought with his last triple-figure score coming against Ajinkya Rahane-led India in the SCG Test in early 2021. Thus, the right-hander slammed his 28th ton in the purest format of the game to join England's run-machine Joe Root in an elite list.

By virtue of his impressive knock, Smith now has 28 Test centuries, the joint-most hundreds by active Test players. Thus, he surpassed India's Virat Kohli's tally, who has not hit a century at the international level since late 2019.

SL VS AUS, 2nd Test: Steve Smith scores 1st ton since early 2021, surpasses Virat Kohli's tally in elite list

England cricket team's new approach in Test cricket has been hailed by many as it continues to deliver results for them on a consistent basis. England are currently unbeaten in their last four Test matches at home after thrashing India by seven wickets in the recently-concluded rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. England were ruthless with the bat as they comfortably chased down the target of 378 runs to deny India a historic Test series win.

India were favourites ahead of the start of England's second innings in the game after handing them a tricky target of 378 runs. However, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root slammed unbeaten tons as the hosts dominated the proceedings to pull off their highest-ever run-chase in Test history.

England have been enjoying a dominant run in the whites ever since the arrival of new Test coach Brendon McCullum and star all-rounder Ben Stokes taking over as captain of the red-ball team. They have now chased down targets in excess of 250 runs in their last four Tests and their aggressive approach with the bat has wowed many.

England's new approach in Tests has been famously labelled as 'Bazball' in reference to head coach McCullum's nickname Baz. Recently, Australia batter Steve Smith was asked about 'Bazball' and he came up with an interesting reply while also issuing a warning to England.

Smith said he is intrigued to see how long will 'Bazball' work for England in the longest format and if their approach will be the same when they face Aussie quicks Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Star and Pat Cummins in tandem when facing Australia.

"It's been exciting, I'm just intrigued to see how long it lasts, if it's sustainable," Smith told on the eve of Australia's 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday (July 06)

"If you come on a wicket that's got some grass on it and Josh Hazlewood, Cummins and Starc are rolling in at you, is it going to be the same? We'll see what happens," he added.

Smith revealed that Australian players have been joking about 'Bazball' in the dressing room and that Australia's new head coach Andrew McDonald has already had enough of the term. The Former Australian skipper also admitted he has himself watched England's new approach and has been entertained by it.

"Guys just keep joking about it - I think Ronnie [McDonald] has had enough of hearing about Bazball to be honest, it's good fun to joke about," Smith said.

"I've watched a little bit of it, it's certainly been entertaining, they're coming out playing their shots. Even someone like Alex Lees started to come down the wicket when he was on nothing really, to play the way he played," he added.

Also Read: 'He is beyond Fab 4': Former India opener lauds Joe Root for his incredible consistency in Test cricket Smith said he is intrigued to see how long will 'Bazball' work for England in the longest format and if their approach will be the same when they face Aussie quicks Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Star and Pat Cummins in tandem when facing Australia. "It's been exciting, I'm just intrigued to see how long it lasts, if it's sustainable," Smith told on the eve of Australia's 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday (July 06) "If you come on a wicket that's got some grass on it and Josh Hazlewood, Cummins and Starc are rolling in at you, is it going to be the same? We'll see what happens," he added. Also Read: 'Take up cage fighting': England great takes a dig at 'villain' Kohli over his antics in Edgbaston Test Smith revealed that Australian players have been joking about 'Bazball' in the dressing room and that Australia's new head coach Andrew McDonald has already had enough of the term.

'Intrigued to see how long 'Bazball' lasts': Steve Smith on England's new approach in Test cricket

Joe Root has been enjoying a stellar run with the bat in Test cricket for England. The former England skipper has been in tremendous form and has been piling on runs for fun in the whites. He has been incredibly consistent over the last couple of years and has already breached the 10,000 run-mark in the longest format.

After helping England register a dominant Test series win over New Zealand at home, Root continued his sublime form in the recently-concluded one-off fifth Test against India at Edgbaston. The former England skipper slammed an unbeaten century in the second innings to help his team pull off their highest-ever run-chase in Test cricket and thrash India by seven wickets.

He also surpassed the likes of Ricky Ponting and Viv Richards among others to achieve the elusive feat of scoring most Test centuries against India. He now has nine tons against India which is the most by any batter in Test cricket. Former India opener Aakash Chopra recently lauded Root for his consistency.

Chopra said Root is no more the part of 'Fab 4' but is already better than the remaining trio of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson as far as Test cricket is considered. The term 'Fab 4' was coined for Kohli, Root, Williamson and Smith as the top four batters in the world in the present era.

"Joe Root has scored more than 10,000 Test runs and 25% of that have come in last two years. When Steve Smith and Virat Kohli were on 27 Test hundreds, Root was on 15-16. Now they are still on 27 and Root has raced to 28 hundreds," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"We used to feel he isn't a part of the 'Fab 4' and I still feel so, because now he is beyond them. The audacity to hit Trent Boult and Shardul Thakur for reverse sweeps shows that he has all the shots," he added.

Joe Root has been in sensational form of late. After taking England to an impressive five-wicket win courtesy of his ton in the series opener of the three Tests versus New Zealand, at Lord's, the former skipper registered yet another triple-figure knock on Day 3 of the second and penultimate Test versus the Tom Latham-led New Zealanders, at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

After the Kiwis made a mammoth 553 all-out, riding on Daryl Mitchell's 190 and Tom Blundell's 106, England were 147-2 when Root came in the middle, along with Ollie Pope. While Pope also scored a memorable century, Root slammed his 27th ton in the format. By virtue of his knock, he has now equalled with other Fab Four members such as Virat Kohli and Steve Smith in terms of Test match hundreds. While Kohli had reached his 27th ton in whites in late 2019, Smith scored his last hundred in early 2021.

Interestingly, the 31-year-old Root had only 17 Test tons at the end of 2020. Since the start of 2021, he has scored 10 centuries as his incredible form continues. The Trent Bridge ton was also the quickest for Root. Courtesy of his knock, Root also went past former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar's run-tally (10,112). The Englishman, who remains unbeaten on 163, is now the 12th highest run-scorer in the purest format.

At stumps on Day 3 of the second Test, England are 473-5, trailing New Zealand by only 80 runs with Root and Ben Foakes in the middle. Will Root convert his hundred into a double ton on Day 4?

Australia commenced their tour of Sri Lanka on Tuesday (June 07) as the Aaron Finch-led visitors locked horns with Dasun Shanaka's Islanders in the series opener of the three T20Is. Talking about the series opener, nothing clicked for the home side. England and New Zealand were involved in a humdinger of a clash when both sides met each other in the series opener of the three-match Test series at Lord's last week. In a riveting clash, Kane Williamson-led New Zealand set up a challenging 277-run target for the Ben Stokes-led hosts, after being dismissed for 132 in the first essay, and had reduced the home team to 69/4 before former skipper Joe Root's sublime 115 rescued England and took them to a memorable five-wicket win over the Kiwis.

Despite giving up the captaincy in the format, Root continued to lead the charge with the bat and his 26th Test ton also helped him reach the 10,000-run mark in Tests. He became the second Englishman, after Sir Alastair Cook, and 14th batsman overall to achieve the illustrious feat. Such has been Root's form that he has amassed 2192 runs including 9 centuries in the last 18 months, whereas his competitors such as Virat Kohli, Williamson and Steve Smith haven't hit a single ton since early January 2021.

Thus, former Indian stumper Saba Karim lavished huge praise on Root. In a discussion on India Ahead, Karim stated that Root's consistency has brought him way ahead of the other three batters in the Fab Four. "He has gone far ahead. Joe Root has left the other three batters far behind in the last two years. Whether we talk about consistency, technique or temperament, in all these aspects Joe Root is above everyone at the moment."

"And we are not discussing one more thing, that if we see England's batting, other than Root, we are not seeing any other name coming to the forefront. It means Joe Root has single-handedly scored runs and hit centuries, he has not got any support from the other end," Karim added.

Root will be eager to continue in a similar stead and guide England to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series when the second and penultimate Test starts on June 10 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

Justin Langer replaced Darren Lehmann to become Australia's head coach post the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket in early 2018. While it took some time for the Men in Yellow to regain their form and momentum, with Steve Smith-David Warner's year-long international ban, the Aussies slowly and steadily came to their own under Langer.

During Langer's tenure, which ended in February 2022, Australia retained the urn with a 2-2 scoreline in Ashes 2019, in England, won white-ball series in India, whitewashed Pakistan in five ODIs in the UAE, reached the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-finals, dominated in home Tests versus New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, won the 2021 T20 World Cup and demolished England 4-0 in Ashes 2021-22. Despite all the success, his tenure ended controversially following a year of unrest and leaks against his methods. Many players had complained of Langer's intense and volatile micromanagement style.

After his resignation, a number of Langer's ex-teammates and Aussie greats such as Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, late Shane Warne, etc. had come out and supported the former opener and even pointed out the mistreatment by Cricket Australia (CA).

Thus, while recalling his conversation with the then interim chief Richard Freudenstein the day after he quit from the top post, Langer recently told cricket.com.au, "The first thing he said to me was, 'It must make you feel so good that all your mates are supporting you in the media.'"

"I said, 'Yeah it is, acting chairman, but with all due respect, those mates are also the all-time greats of Australian cricket. They are the fabric of Australian cricket. They are Australian cricket. They also work all around the world in cricket. So yeah, I'm glad my mates are looking after me. Imagine if you had had'.

He blamed the politics within to have led to his exit and added, "Not only did we win everything, but I had energy, and I had focus, and I was happy besides the bulls*** politics."

'I was happy besides the bulls*** politics' - Justin Langer opines on his exit as Australia men's team coach

After a riveting three-match Test series between Pakistan and Australia, the action now moves onto the limited-overs as Babar Azam-led hosts face Aaron Finch's Men in Yellow in the series opener of the three ODIs on Tuesday (March 29).

The action between the two teams will resume in the same venue, where the third and final Test was played. The Men in Green return to the ODI format after a long gap and will be eager to give their all. They have a solid squad in the form of Babar, Md Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, etc.

On the other hand, Finch & Co. are without the likes of David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins. In addition, injury to all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and Covid-positive test for Josh Iglis have caused some concerns for the visitors. They still have the likes of Finch, Cameron Green, Adam Zampa, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Marnus Labuschagne to rely upon.

Given both Australia and Pakistan are at the bottom-half of the ODI Super League points table, they have plenty riding on the three matches which will be held across five days, followed by a solitary T20I. With the next ODI World Cup now only 1.5 years away, the series is of more importance than what the picture portrays at present.

Pakistan and Australia are involved in the third and final Test at the Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore. On Day Three of the series decider, on Wednesday (March 23), the Pat Cummins-led visitors managed to end the day's proceedings on a high courtesy an overall lead of 134 runs.

Talking about Day Three, it started with Babar Azam-led Pakistan well-placed at 90-1 in reply to Australia's first-innings total of 391. Azhar Ali's 78 and opener Abdullah Shafique's 81 enabled Pakistan to a strong position as they crossed the 150-run mark with the loss of a solitary wicket. From 214-2, they did lose the momentum to be 264-5, however, would've never imagined being dismissed for 268. In fact, they lose their last five wickets for four runs as Australia are now in the driver's seat. Cummins' 5 for 56 and Mitchell Starc's 4 for 36 propelled the Aussies on the top as they will now be desperate to create history and clinch the series 1-0.

Captain Cummins led from the front with the red cherry and also recorded an elite feat. His spell is now the best-ever figures by a visiting captain in Pakistan.

After putting Australia ahead, Cummins said post the evening session, "It's all a bit of a blur the last couple of hours. We'll sit back and bat tomorrow. A lot like last game, we've given ourselves a good opportunity here, really in front of the game, so hopefully bat well and then try to take those last 10 wickets."

For the unversed, Australia had set up a mammoth 506-run target versus the hosts in the second and penultimate Test in Karachi. However, the Babar-led side managed a fighting draw and, hence, Australia will be wary of Pakistan's potential comeback in the remaining two days of the Test series.

Pak vs Aus, 3rd Test: Pat Cummins achieves new feat as his 5/56 puts visitors on top in Lahore

The third and final Test between Pakistan and Australia has lived upto expectations so far. Day Four of the series decider resumed with Pat Cummins-led Australia 11/0 after getting a vital 123-run first-innings lead against Babar Azam-led home side.

While the penultimate day was another riveting affair between both sides, Aussie vice-captain Steve Smith achieved a new and elite feat in the third innings of the Lahore Test. Smith was seven short of reaching 8,000 runs in the longest format before fourth day's play in Lahore. As soon as he entered the 8,000-run club, he achieved a historic feat of becoming the quickest-ever to score 8k Test runs. He went past Sri Lanka's former wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara and now spearheads the list which also comprises Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Garfield Sobers in the top five.

Smith, however, couldn't make the most of his special day as he departed for 17 (27) before Cummins-led Australia declared for 227-3, setting up a challenging 351-run target for the hosts. At stumps on Day Four, the match hangs in the balance following Pakistan's impressive start to the run-chase. They are 73 for no loss and will fancy their chances of completing the run-chase. However, it won't be easy as the home side lost their last five wickets for mere four runs in their first innings.

Pak vs Aus, 3rd Test: Steve Smith achieves new feat, becomes quickest to reach 8000-run club

Quick bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah picked up two wickets apiece on Monday to lead Pakistan's inspired performance against Australia on the first day of the deciding third and final test in Lahore.

Afridi, 21, did the early damage, striking twice in his second over to dismiss opener David Warner for seven and No. 3 Marnus Labuschagne before he had scored, to reduce Australia to 8-2 after they won the toss and opted to bat.

Naseem, 19, drafted into the Pakistan side in place of all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, hurt the tourists in the final session, dismissing a well-set Steve Smith for 59 and Travis Head for 26 as Australia reached 232-5 at close.

All-rounder Cameron Green was unbeaten on 20 for Australia with wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey eight not out.

After their shaky start, it was opener Usman Khawaja who led Australia's fightback with a resilient 91, adding to scores of 97, 160 and 44 not out in his last three innings in his country of birth.

The left-handed Khawaja, who added 136 for the third wicket with Smith, appeared set for his 12th test hundred before Pakistan captain Babar Azam completed a one-handed catch at slip off spinner Sajid Khan.

Khawaja said some deliveries from the spinners were already gripping and turning and he felt a first-innings total of close to 350 would be good for Australia.

"This one (wicket) is probably some of the toughest to score runs on," the 35-year-old told reporters, adding that he physically struggled during his knock on a hot day.

FIRST LAHORE TEST SINCE 2009 ATTACK

Smith, Australia`s batting mainstay, completed his third successive half-century before he was out leg before wicket to a straight delivery from Naseem.

The first two tests of the series -- the first between the sides in Pakistan since 1998 -- were drawn.

"The pitch was a bit slow and also kept a bit low," Naseem said. "Our first target is to dismiss Australia under 300. I think we will get a result on this pitch."

Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium was hosting a test match for the first time since the 2009 attack by gunmen on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team.

After left-armer Afridi's two early wickets, Australia could have been in even deeper trouble but Pakistan failed to capitalise on chances offered by Khawaja and Smith.

Looking to dominate left-arm spinner Nauman Ali from the onset, Khawaja, on 12, flashed hard at a full-pitched delivery but the edge flew under the hands of Babar Azam in the lone slip position.

On the next delivery, Nauman failed to hold a straightforward return catch from Smith, who was on 19. Off-spinner Sajid also spilled a return catch off Head when he was on seven.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah keep Australia's batting in check as visitors end Day 1 on 232-5 in Lahore

After the end of the second and penultimate Test between hosts Pakistan and Australia, the series scoreline remains 0-0. While the series opener was a run-fest in Rawalpindi, the pitch at Karachi also failed to provide a result as the two teams have shifted focus to the series finale, which will get underway at the Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore on March 21.

Ahead of the third and final Test, former Pakistan cricketer Aquib Javed has slammed the Ramiz Raja-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the pitches it has produced and asked them to take a leaf from the curators in India. In this regard, he said on his Youtube channel, "Why go anywhere else? I would say find out from the curators in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai etc how they prepare the turners on which Indian spinners dominate. I am surprised until now Pakistan has not been able to produce pure turning tracks, which will help our spinners."

Thus, Javed has asked PCB to learn from the Indian curators in preparing turning pitches which would benefit the hosts. In the recently-concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series, in India, Rohit Sharma & Co. whitewashed the Lankans despite not playing on rank-turners but on pitches which did offer adequete help for the spinners and also led to pacers chipping in with regular scalps. Talking about the second and final Test, Australia rode on Marnus Labuschagne's 160 to post 556-9 decl, after opting to bat first at the National Stadium, Karachi. In reply, Babar Azam-led home side managed only 148 in their first innings (conceding a whopping 408-run lead). After Pat Cummins' Australia set a massive 506-run target for the hosts, Babar's 196, Mohammad Rizwan's 104* led Pakistan to 443-7 as both sides settled for a draw on the final day's play on Wednesday (March 16).

The series decider will now be held on March 21 at Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore.

I am surprised until now Pakistan has not been able to produce pure turning tracks, which will help our spinners." Thus, Javed has asked PCB to learn from the Indian curators in preparing turning pitches which would benefit the hosts. In the recently-concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series, in India, Rohit Sharma & Co. whitewashed the Lankans despite not playing on rank-turners but on pitches which did offer adequete help for the spinners and also led to pacers chipping in with regular scalps. Thus, it will be interesting to see what kind of a surface is prepared for the Pakistan-Australia Test series finale. 'Find out from Indian curators...' - Ex-Pak cricketer lashes out at PCB over pitches prepared for AUS Tests

Pakistan and Australia played out a humdinger of a clash in the just-concluded second and penultimate Test at the National Stadium, Karachi on Wednesday (March 16). After Day 4 ended with Pakistan at 192-2, in pursuit of a mammoth 506-run target set by Pat Cummins & Co., Babar Azam stood tall from one end to prevent a memorable win for the visitors with an impressive 196-run knock in Karachi. After Babar fell with over 12 overs remaining in the final day's play, Mohammad Rizwan's 104 not out propelled Pakistan to 443-7 as both sides settled for a draw with the series scoreline still reading 0-0.

Courtesy Babar's lengthy stay in the middle, Pakistan managed to escape from the jaws of a defeat after conceding a big first-innings lead. Babar batted for over 400 deliveries and registered the highest score by a captain in the final innings of a Test match. With a terrific draw, courtesy Babar, Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique (96), Pakistan created history and became only the second team to bat over 1,000 deliveries (1,030) in the fourth and final innings for a draw.

The first instance came during England's timeless Test in Durban, versus South Africa, in 1939. That match went on for as many as 10 days and had to be stopped as the English team would've missed the boat for home. Back then, England were 654/5 in chase of 696 in 218.2 overs (1,746) when the match ended in a draw.

After the match, Babar said at the post-match presentation, "The plan was to bat session-by-session and build partnerships. It was a team effort, as others (Shafique and Rizwan) chipped in with useful contributions too. We took the onus and the main focus was to build partnerships right throughout the day. Rizwan was outstanding as he saved the Test for us eventually. We wanted to continue to bat in the same way (after the tea break) and we tried to be positive and play our shots. The team needed this knock, so I tried to bat for as long as I could."

Meanwhile, Cummins stated, "I think so, I think we had enough overs, it was a pretty good wicket even on day 4 and day 5. We created a few chances, but we failed to grab them. Mitch Swepson was fantastic on debut, his figures don't do justice to the way he bowled. Nathan was impressive towards the end, as he always does on day 5. For an Australian team to bat over two days at the start of a Test match, I don't think we've done that for a long time. Lots of positives from this match and so far in the series. The way we batted was fantastic, the way we hunted and took those wickets on day 3 with reverse swing, that was brilliant as well. And we were always ahead in the game, so really proud of the boys."

Babar Azam-led Pakistan become second team to achieve historic feat after drawn Test vs Australia

Skipper Babar Azam produced a career-best 196 under immense pressure as Pakistan snatched draw from the jaws of defeat in the second test against Australia on Wednesday.

Chasing a record 506 for an improbable win, Pakistan's best bet was to bat out the final day and Babar led by example as they finished on 443-7, the sixth-highest fourth-innings total of all time.

Babar's majestic knock, which included 21 fours and a six, will be an inspiration for his team heading into the third and final test in Lahore on Monday.

"The plan was to bat session-by-session and build partnerships," the Pakistan captain, who was adjudged player-of-the-match said at the presentation ceremony.

Nathan Lyon (4-112) injected fresh drama in the final session dismissing Babar and Faheem Ashraf with successive deliveries but Mohammad Rizwan's unbeaten 104 helped Pakistan salvage a draw.

Babar Azam, Md Rizwan's heroics helps Pakistan draw 2nd Test against Australia in Karachi

Usman Khawaja smashed his 11th test hundred and forged a 159-run partnership with Steve Smith to power Australia to 251 for three on the opening day of the second test against Pakistan on Saturday.

Islamabad-born Khawaja had fallen agonisingly short of a hundred in the opening test in Rawalpindi where he top-scored for his side with a breezy 97.

The elegant left-hander made amends in Karachi where he shelved the reverse sweep and made an unbeaten 127, which included 13 fours and a six.

Smith made 72 before falling to Hasan Ali in the penultimate over of the day.
Nightwatchman Nathan Lyon had yet to open his account.

"It would`ve been nice to have Smith there at the end too but we had a good partnership," Khawaja said.

"We've still got plenty of batting to come.

"It started to reverse in the second session and made it tough to score against the pace bowlers."

Earlier, Australia got off to a strong start after Pat Cummins elected to bat on a dry surface at the National Stadium.

Khawaja looked in sublime touch and scored freely on the leg-side after being fed regularly on his pad.

His opening partner David Warner was less convincing, though, surviving a couple of LBW appeals and getting hit on his shoulder by a short delivery from Hasan Ali.

Warner hit Sajid Khan for a six to bring up Australia's 50 in the 11th over.
Sajid conceded two more sixes in his fourth over, prompting Pakistan captain Babar Azam to take the spinner out of the attack.

Seamer Faheem Ashraf broke the 82-run opening stand with a back of a length delivery that Warner, who made 36, could only edge to Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps.

Pakistan tasted a second success soon afterwards when Sajid ran out Marnus Labuschagne for a duck with a direct throw from mid-off.

Khawaja and Smith steadied the ship batting through the second session.
Khawaja took a single off Nauman Ali to bring up his third hundred in four tests since his recall in January after more than two years' absence.

Pakistan spinners resorted to a negative line after tea, bowling way down the leg side, to stem the run flow and the batsmen were happy to just pad them away.

"In the last session, they bowled pretty leg side and had some negative plans to see if we'd play some shots," Khawaja said.

"We decided not to and didn't want to give them any free wickets."
Smith, who made 78 in Rawalpindi, once again failed to convert his fifty into a hundred and edged Hasan for Faheem to take a low one-handed catch at second slip.

Pakistan vs Australia, 2nd Test: Usman Khawaja's century power visitors to 251-3 on Day 1 in Karachi

Babar Azam-led Pakistan locked horns with Australia in the first Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi on March 04. The match was a run-fest that produced as many as 1,187 runs with only 14 wickets falling overall.

Thus, the historic Test between Pakistan and Australia was a dull affair and ended in a tame draw with no even contest between bat and ball. The pitch for the three-match series opener was, thus, heavily criticised on social media platforms as it wasn't a perfect endorsement for Test cricket. Following the criticism, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja came forward and defended the Rawalpindi pitch.

"A drawn match is never a good advertisement for Test cricket, and I totally understand that we need to get a result in five days these days, and we get it 90% [of the time], but I want to remind you of 2-3 things," Ramiz said in a video message posted on PCB's official Twitter handle.

"It takes 5-6 months to prepare pitches, and during the off-season, you will see - soil is coming from Australia; we've experimented, consulted soil experts and prepared soils, and we will redo 50-60 pitches all over Pakistan once our season ends in March-April. " He further opined, "I understand the fans' frustration and it would have been great if there was a result in this Test match. But do remember that this is a three-Test series and there is a lot of cricket left to be played. We cannot make a fast or bouncy pitch for the heck of it and put the conditions in Australia's lap. It is important that when we play at home, we play according to our strengths."

He has lied, betrayed fans: Kaneria slams PCB chairman Ramiz Raja after his remarks on Rawalpindi pitch

Imam-ul-Haq smashed his second hundred in the run-fest in Rawalpindi but Australia's first test in Pakistan in 24 years ended in a dull draw on Tuesday.

Opting to bat on run-filled surface, Pakistan had made 476-4 before declaring their first innings at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

By the time they bowled out Australia for 459 on the final day, the chances of any team winning the contest had evaporated.

Pakistan decided to bat on allowing Imam, who went into the match without a century in his previous 11 tests, to score his second hundred of the contest.

The bespectacled left-hander's unbeaten 111 included seven boundaries and two sixes. Imam went on to win the man-of-the-match award.

His opening partner Abdullah Shafique, who made 136 not out, also brought up his maiden test century as Pakistan posted 252 for no loss in their second innings before the teams shook hands and left.

A total of 1,187 runs were scored over five days and only 14 wickets fell in what Australia's Steve Smith called a "pretty benign, dead wicket" which risks censure from the game's governing body.

With draw looming as the only possible result, Australia captain Pat Cummins shielded his frontline quicks and used as many as nine bowlers in Pakistan's second innings.

Earlier, after the tourists began the final day on 449-7, Pakistan took 11 deliveries to claim the last three Australian wickets.

Nauman Ali dismissed Cummins for eight, and both Mitchell Starc and Lyon fell lbw as Australia finished 17 runs behind Pakistan's first innings total.

Each of Australia`s top four batsmen crossed the 50-mark but could not convert them into hundreds and the tourists lost their last six wickets for 52 runs.

Left-arm spinner Nauman claimed a career-best 6-107 on a flat track where bowlers struggled for success.

When Pakistan came out to bat for a second time in the match, Cummins saw no point in straining his pace attack on the unresponsive track.

On Tuesday the pace trio of Cummins, Starc and Josh Hazlewood bowled a combined 16 out of their 77 overs.

Off-spinner Lyon alone sent down 26 overs, while part-timers Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja were also utilised.

Pakistan vs Australia, 1st Test: Rawalpindi run-fest ends in a dull draw

Virat Kohli remains a big name in world cricket. The 33-year-old recently became the 12th Indian cricketer to enter the 100-Test club when Rohit Sharma's Team India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match series opener in Mohali.

Kohli contributed with a well-made 76-ball 45, however, once again missed out on scoring a triple-figure knock. Thus, he also couldn't end his two-year-long century drought at the international level. The wait for Kohli's international century continues as the right-hander has failed to deliver as per his credentails despite crossing the fifty-run mark on several occasions across formats (since his last ton in late 2019).

The cricketing fraternity, thus, continues to wait for Kohli's century and the cameraman in the ongoing Pakistan vs Australia 1st Test caught hold of two fans, with one of them having a special message for the Indian star batter.

One of the banners read that the fan really wanted Kohli to break his century drought and get to his 71st international ton in Pakistan. On the other hand, the other fan's banner read, "Biggest Match, 23rd Oct 2022, IND vs PAK (T20WC), Rohit v Shaheen."

With the whole cricketing world waiting for Kohli's next ton, it will be interesting to see if he gets there in India's second and final Test versus Sri Lanka, commencing on March 12 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Pakistan-Australia's first Test is heading for a dull draw after the visitors came close to Babar Azam & Co.'s first-innings total at stumps on Day 4, on Monday (March 07).
