Australia came close to matching Pakistan's first innings total of 476-4 declared in the opening test as the run-feast in Rawalpindi appeared to be heading for a dull draw on Monday.

Wet outfield caused by overnight rain not only wiped out the entire morning session on day four but also effectively dashed prospects of victory by either side in Australia's first test in Pakistan in 24 years.

The touring side finished the penultimate day on 449-7, 27 runs behind, after four days of bat dominating ball on a flat track at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Mitchell Starc was on 12 when bad light stopped play with skipper Pat Cummins on four at the other end.

Marnus Labuschagne made 90 and Steve Smith contributed 78 in a strong batting performance by the tourists.

"It's a pretty benign wicket. There's not a great deal of pace and bounce in it for the seamers," Smith told reporters.

"Thought it would break up a little bit more, probably turn a bit more from the start, but it probably hasn't done so."

Earlier, Pakistan struck twice in the morning session after the delayed start to the penultimate day's action.

Armed with the second new ball, Shaheen Afridi induced a loose drive from Labuschagne and Abdullah Shafique dived to his right to take a sharp catch in the slip.

Labuschagne's fluent knock included 12 boundaries.

Travis Head made eight before edging spinner Nauman Ali and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan took a smart catch behind the stumps.

Cameron Green (48), who was not even born when Australia last toured Pakistan in 1998, began well but fell short of what could have been the fifth half-century in their top six.

Green fluffed his sweep short against Nauman to find Iftikhar at short fine leg.

Left-arm spinner Nauman kept bowling outside the leg-stump, which also earned him the prize wicket of Smith who gloved a ball to Rizwan attempting a sweep shot.

Smith was the fourth batsman in Australia's top four who passed the 50-mark but could not convert it into a hundred.

Alex Carey made 19 but never looked convincing and eventually lost his off-stump to fast-bowler Naseem Shah.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam brought himself in for the final over of the day but Starc and Cummins had no problem in dealing with his innocuous part-time off-spin.

Nauman's 4-107 was impressive on a batting-friendly track and the 35-year-old attributed it to his patient approach.

"The ball was not turning much from the middle, so I tried to bowl into the rough areas and use those patches, which earned me a couple of wickets," he told reporters.

"Tomorrow we'd try to bowl them out as quickly as possible and I'm optimistic of a five-wicket haul."

Pakistan vs Australia Test series: Everything to know about squads, schedule, telecast, streaming details

Australia batsman Steve Smith said on Tuesday the players felt "incredibly safe" on their first tour of Pakistan in nearly 25 years, despite spinner Ashton Agar receiving a death threat via social media just days before the start of the first Test. Agar was warned against travelling to Pakistan, though the threat was dismissed following an investigation by the boards of Pakistan and Australia and government security agencies.

Cricket Australia said extensive security plans were in place for such social media activity and that the threat was "not considered a risk". Smith said the team trusted the security arrangements in place. "We`re aware of social media and the unfortunate events that can occur on platforms," he told reporters ahead of the first test, which starts on Friday in Rawalpindi. "We`ve got a lot of people working here with us, we trust our security and we`re feeling incredibly safe in Pakistan." Top teams have largely shunned Pakistan since an attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 that killed six policemen and two civilians.

International sides have recently started touring Pakistan again but in September New Zealand returned home after abruptly abandoning a tour minutes before the opening game in Rawalpindi following a government security alert. England followed suit three days later, withdrawing their men`s and women`s teams from a tour in October citing the "mental and physical well-being" of players.

Smith said that he was relishing the challenge of playing in Pakistan. "It`s great to be back here and playing cricket," he said. "It`s the first time a lot of us have been here and we`re excited. We know how passionate Pakistanis are about cricket."

Smith sustained a concussion in a match against Sri Lanka in Sydney last month, slamming his head to the ground after falling over the boundary rope but the 32-year-old said he had progressed well. "It`s the first session back for me facing fast bowling. I`m recovering from the concussion and I`ve faced some side-arm and spinners," Smith said.

"The head has progressed really well the last few days. I`m feeling in a good space, done a lot of stuff where I`ve got my heart rate up to a good amount and brought it down ... all part of the protocols of getting back to playing."

IPL 2022 Unsold Players' List: Top 5 stars who failed to draw a single bid at mega auction

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami believes Babar Azam can go on to become one of the greats for Pakistan but it would be unfair to compare him with the likes of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Joe Root at present. Babar has been one of the best batters for Pakistan over the last few years and has been a prolific run-scorer across all formats of the game.

Babar was appointed as the captain of the Pakistan team across all formats in 2020 and his form has only got better with the added responsibility of leading the side as he continues to shine with the bat. The Pakistan skipper has often earned comparisons with the likes of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Joe Root for his consistency.

However, Shami believes Babar has a long way to go to earned comparisons with greats like Kohli, Smith and Root. The Indian fast bowler said it will be unfair on Babar to compare him with Kohli and that he needs to prove himself in the upcoming years to get where Kohli is currently at.

"Pakistan have been playing very good cricket of late and the emergence of three-four players have really helped them a lot. No doubt Babar Azam is a great player. But to compare him with the likes of Steve Smith, Joe Root or Virat Kohli will be unfair on him," Shami told India.com.

"I would say let him play for that many years and then maybe we can judge. At the moment, if he continues to play like that, then he would obviously end his career as one of the greats from Pakistan. Good luck Babar Azam, I would say," he added.

Kohli, who is regarded as one of the greatest batters of all time, is the only batsman at present to average over fifty across all three formats of the game. Kohli has 7962, 12285 and 3227 runs in 99 Tests, 257 ODIs and 95 T20Is, respectively. Despite not being on top of his game for the last couple of years, Kohli averages over 50 in all three formats - a testament to his incredible consistency.

Kohli is the second-highest run-getter of all time in T20Is and is on top of the list of active batters with the most centuries in international cricket. The former Indian captain has 70 international centuries to his name so far in his career.

Babar, on the other hand, has 2461 runs in 37 Tests at an average of 43.17, 3985 runs in 83 ODIs at an average of over 56 and 2620 runs in 73 matches at an average of over 45.

'Let him play for that many years': Md. Shami on Babar Azam's comparison with Virat Kohli, Steve Smith

No Team India player made the cut in ICC Men's T20I team of 2021. The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Wednesday (January 19), announced the elite XI with Babar Azam named captain. Babar, who led Pakistan to the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup, has two more Men in Green players in the star-studded list.

Babar's opening partner and wicketkeeper Md Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi were a part of the list. Rizwan had a dream run in 2021 in the shortest format, ending with 1,326 runs in 29 matches with his skipper Babar being a distant second (with 939 runs). Shaheen, on the other hand, was impressive throughout the calendar year and ended with 23 wickets. He was also the Player-of-the-Match in Pakistan's first-ever victory over India in a World Cup clash (during the T20 WC).

Shamsi returned with a whopping 36 scalps, along with SL's Hasaranga.

The other players in the list are Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman (28 wickets in 2021) and Australia's pacer Josh Hazlewood. The latter played a key role in Aaron Finch-led Australia's maiden T20 WC win, finishing with 11 scalps in 7 games at an average of 15.91.

Other big names such as David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, Shakib Al Hasan, etc. also didn't feature in the XI.

ICC Men's T20I team of 2021: Babar Azam leads star-studded XI, no Team India player makes the cut

Australia thumped England by 146 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test of the 2021/22 edition, held Down Under, on Sunday (January 16). After Root & Co. had ensured to have prevented a whitewash, drawing the fourth and penultimate Test in Sydney, the visitors came to the series finale with an aim to sign off with a consolation win.

Opting to bowl first, England dismissed Australia for 303 -- thanks to Travis Head's 101 -- before the Three Lions bundled out for 188. Despite the Aussies managing only 155 in their second essay, Pat Cummins & Co. gave England a stiff 271-run target on Day 3 on Sunday. Root & Co. collapsed and were dismissed for 124 to lose the clash on the third day, in Hobart, by 146 runs.

Hence, Australia claimed the series 4-0 and went wild in their celebrations. During the team picture, after the post-match presentation at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, Usman Khawaja (who scored twin centuries in the fourth Test) had to move away from his teammates as they opened the champagne bottles. The Pakistani-born Aussie cricketer's religion prevents him from indulging in such celebrations. To this, Captain Cummins asked the team members to keep the champagne away for a bit to include Khawaja during the photo. Here's the video of Cummins' gesture for Khawaja:

After the end of the series, Cummins stated at the post-match presentation, "Really is (stuff of dreams). Pretty crazy. To be at the end of a 5-match series with so many positives and 4-0, yeah really pumped. I am really happy as a captain, not sure if he is (smiles, on not having to bowl Lyon in the entire game). We have had some 15 players used in this series, some tough calls. Certainly feels like we are on to something big."

On the other hand, Captain Root opined on England's shambolic performance and said, "It's been a frustrating tour, tough tour for us. We have to keep learning to get better. Not go away from here and keep making the same mistakes. Not long before we play Test cricket again and an opportunity to turn things around. It's pretty obvious we need to be putting more runs on the board. Too often we have not given our bowlers enough. We have been outplayed by Australia. Sometimes you have to put your hand up and say a team outplayed us."

Here's the video of Cummins' gesture for Khawaja: ALSO READ | WATCH: Police intervene as Australia get 'too loud' during celebrations after thumping Ashes win This might be a small gesture but this is what makes Pat Cummins great. Stuart Broad and James Anderson steered England to 270 for nine at the close of play in the evening gloom, well short of the victory target of 388 but a huge turnaround after heavy losses in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Pakistan spin-bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan named the toughest batter he has bowled at in international cricket during a recent Q/A session with fans on Twitter. While there are many batters who play spin really well at the highest level, Shadab went ahead and named two batters in the form of Rohit Sharma and David Warner.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, KL Rahul, Joe Root, etc. play spin really well. Hence, it isn't easy bowling against them, however, Shadab named Warner and Rohit as per his experience.

In a recent #AskShadab session with his avid fans, a Twitter user asked him 'who is the most difficult batsman to bowl' as the Pakistani all-rounder mentioned Rohit and the Aussie left-handed opener.

India achieved their second Test series win over Australia in their own backyard during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite not having the services of Virat Kohli (due to paternity leave) after the first Test, which India lost by 8 wickets, the Ajinkya Rahane-led Indian team pulled off an upset over Tim Paine-led Aussies to win the series 2-1 Down Under.

During the series, India managed to keep Steve Smith at bay -- despite him scoring a century in the third Test -- as the wily off-spinner R Ashwin got the better of the former Aussie captain on three occasions. Recently, the 35-year-old spinner Ashwin opened up on his duel with Smith and how he managed to keep him quiet with the bat for most part of the epic series.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Ashwin said, "I made him (Steve Smith) my obsession for about six months, not just two weeks or three weeks. Just footage, just watching different matches. The most recent series they played (before India toured Australia in 2020-21) was New Zealand. I went through every single day's play. I would go on to my app and check - how many runs was (Marnus) Labuschagne batting on when Will Somerville came on to bowl? Which ball did he hit over the cow corner?"

"As a spinner, you need to be very precise in Australia. Every run you give must be on your own terms. So whenever Marnus Labuschagne steps out, he hits the ball over cow corner for an offspinner, or he hits it over mid-off. It's very rare through long-on. And he doesn't have a flat sweep, he has a lap sweep, like a paddle. All these shots have a trigger. And it's very fine. If you don't know or if you've not seen enough footage, you cannot pick these things up. And with Steve Smith, his batting is very momentum-driven. Most of his batting comes from his hands, so my whole idea was to disturb his hands through the series. He's got certain hand-movement patterns. You have to pick them and be able to bowl in a way that disturbs his hand pattern. So I bowled with different load-ups, different speeds, different run-ups and all that. I realised I kind of got to him," Ashwin further elaborated.

Made him my obsession: Ashwin reveals how he got the better of Steve Smith in 2020/21 IND-AUS series

Steve Smith captained Australia in the second Test against England after regular skipper Pat Cummins had to miss the game. Cummins was ruled on the morning of the first day of the pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide after coming in close contact with a COVID-19 positive person during his visit to a restaurant in the city.

Cummins was thus asked to isolate and Australia had to name Smith the stand-in captain for the second Test. Smith, who was recently appointed as the vice-captain of the side for the first time since the 2018 Sandpaper scandal, revealed he got to know about the change in captaincy only hours before the start of the game at the Adelaide Oval.

Smith recalled how he had two missed calls from Pat Cummins and a missed message from head coach Justin Langer before he found out about leading the team in the game. Smith-led Australia to a comprehensive 275-run win in the second Test as the hosts bagged back-to-back wins to make it 2-0 in the five-match series.

"On day one, there was not a lot of nerves. I only found out about 10 or 11 a.m. I had two missed calls from Pat and a missed message from (head coach) Justin Langer..." Smith said after Australia's victory.

"I found out the news that Pat was out for the game and I was going to be captain. It's been an enjoyable week, hopefully, we can keep this momentum going," he added.

It was yet another dominant performance from the Aussies, who set up a huge target of 468 runs for England in their second innings after bundling them out for just 236 runs in their first innings. Barring Jos Buttler, who scored 26 runs off 207 balls and Chris Woakes, who scored 44 off 97 deliveries, none of the England batters managed to show some fight against the Australian bowlers.

'Got 2 missed calls from Pat': Steve Smith reveals how he learnt about return to captaincy in 2nd Ashes Test

The second Test between Australia and England ended with the Steve Smith-led Aussies thrashing England by a whopping 275-run margin at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Monday (December 20). Despite being without regular captain Pat Cummins and premier pacer Josh Hazlewood, the hosts produced an all-round display to demolish a toothless Joe Root-led England line-up and go 2-0 up in the Ashes 2021/22 series Down Under.

Opting to bat first, Smith-led Aussies posted 473-9 decl. riding on Marnus Labuschagne's 103 and fifties from David Warner, Smith and Alex Carey. Updated WTC points table after Australia thrash England in day-night Ashes Test in Adelaide

Marnus Labuschagne has been a revelation for Australia. He walked out to bat as the concussion substitute for Steve Smith during the Ashes 2019 in the United Kingdom. Since then, he has been a regular in the Test line-up and has impressed one and all with his consistency and hunger for runs.

After an impressive fifty in the Ashes 2021/22 opener, at The Gabba, Brisbane, the right-hander slammed his sixth hundred on Day 2 of the second Test, i.e. a day-night contest at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Friday (December 17). Labuschagne rode on his luck throughout the innings as he was given a reprieve twice on the opening day, got an edge off James Anderson to reach to triple-figures and was also caught off Ollie Robinson all the way to the boundary rope before replays suggested it was a no-ball.

Nonetheless, the youngster made the most of his chances and notched up his third century in day-night Test; first by any player. Thus, Labuschagne achieved a rare feat courtesy his knock, filled with 8 fours. Apart from Labuschagne, David Warner (95), stand-in captain Steve Smith (93) and Alex Carey (51) have propelled the Aussie total beyond the 400-run mark after opting to bat first.

On Day 1, Labuschagne had also crossed the 2000-run mark in Tests, becoming the third quickest Australian and fifth overall to the feat.

Ashes 2021, 2nd Test: Marnus Labuschagne achieves rare feat with another hundred in day-night contest

Jos Buttler took an absolute screamer in the first session of the opening day of Ashes 2021/22 edition on Thursday (December 16). With Stuart Broad bowling the eighth over, after Australia elected to bat first, the experienced pacer dropped it short and towards the leg side of opener Marcus Harris. Harris got an edge and the ball flew towards the keeper as Buttler timed his dive towards the right and covered some distance to hold onto the catch.

At one point, it looked like the ball would cross Buttler and reach the fence. However, the 31-year-old stunned one and all and produced a brilliant effort to get rid of Harris for cheap. Here's the video of Buttler's wonderful catch which was shared by cricket.com.au's official Twitter handle.

The second Test, of Ashes 2021/22, is oncourse with Australia off to a good start following Harris' early dismissal. David Warner (95) and Marcus Labuschagne's 100-run stand, for the second-wicket, have kept the Aussies ahead.

Is that a bird? No it's Jos Buttler! England keeper takes a stunner on Day 1 of 2nd Ashes Test - Watch

Australia and England have locked horns with each other in the second Test of Ashes 2021/22 edition, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Thursday (December 16). After Australia thrashed England by 9 wickets in the series opener at The Gabba, Brisbane, the hosts are hot favourites to win the second Test, which is a day-night contest at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, but were dealt with a major blow with skipper Pat Cummins being ruled out.

Cummins isn't injured but had to miss out after being identified as a close contact of a Covid case. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the reports and said in a statement, "(He) did not breach any biosecurity protocols. He isolated as soon as he became aware of the situation and has since had a PCR test, which produced a negative result. SA Health has confirmed that Cummins is a close contact and will be required to isolate for seven days."

For the unversed, CA claimed that pacer Mitchell Starc and spinner Nathan Lyon were dining at the same restaurant as Cummins, however, were at a separate table outdoors. Hence, they have been deemed casual contacts and are part of the 2nd Test.

Thus, Steve Smith has replaced Cummins as the Aussie skipper for the day-night contest. Smith is leading the national side for the first time ever since he was removed from the top post after the infamous sandpaper gate fiasco in early 2018.

EXPLAINED! Why is Pat Cummins is out of 2nd Ashes Test as Steve Smith leads Aussies in D/N contest

After Tim Paine's untimely resignation as Australia's Test captain, in the aftermath of the sexting scandal, Pat Cummins was appointed as his successor ahead of Ashes 2021/22. Not often do we see fast bowlers being appointed as the captain, purely because it adds to their workload, however, the No. 1 Test bowler Cummins exceeded expectations on his first day as captain with a five-fer in the first Ashes Test at The Gabba, Brisbane on Wednesday (December 8).

Opting to bat first, the Joe Root-led England were off to a disastrous start with Rory Burns clean bowled by Mitchell Starc on the first ball itself. Cummins then dismissed the likes of Haseeb Hameed (25), Ben Stokes (5), Chris Woakes (21), Ollie Robinson (0) and Mark Wood (8) to put his team on top. He returned with 5 for 38 in 13.1 over as England were bowled out for 147 runs in the first innings. Rain interruption, however, led to an early stump on Day 1 without Aussies coming out to bat.

Here's a look at some of the records broken by Cummins on debut as Aussie Test captain:

With a dream start, Cummins became only the second Australian captain, after George Giffen in 1984, to pick a 5-wicket haul in the first Test as skipper.

In addition, the right-arm pacer joined an elite list of captains, featuring legendary Pakistani skipper Imran Khan, to have claimed a five-wicket haul on his first day as captain. For the unversed, the likes of Charles Aubrey Smith, George Allen and Khan are the first three cricketers to achieve the landmark.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to become a ten-team tournament from the 2022 season with the inclusion of two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. While the existing eight IPL teams have already revealed the list of retained players ahead of the mega auction which is set to take place before the start of the new season, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have been given the right to pick three players each from the pool of non-retained players.

While both Lucknow and Ahmedabad IPL franchises will be looking to pick quality players from the pool of the non-retained ones ahead of the mega auction, they would also be looking to secure the signing of their respective captains. Both Ahmedabad and Lucknow franchises will be on the lookout for captaincy candidates who can be picked before the mega auction to build the team around them.

A number of top Indian and overseas players have been let go of by their respective franchises who can become the future leaders of the two new IPL teams. The likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer among others will be on the radar of not just the two new teams but several others, who will be looking to get a new captain ahead of the new season.

Here is a look at 5 potential captaincy candidates for two new IPL teams:

KL Rahul

KL Rahul is one of the favourites to take over as the captain of the Lucknow IPL team and is reportedly in negotiations with the franchise after leaving Punjab Kings. Rahul has been reportedly offered a staggering deal of Rs 20 crore (INR 200 million) per year to join the Lucknow team ahead of the new season.

One of the best Indian batters in the IPL over the last few years, Rahul led Punjab for two seasons in 2020 and 2021. While he was consistent with the bat on the personal front, Rahul failed to inspire his side to playoffs in both seasons. Nonetheless, he has been one of the best batters in the league for the last few years and is a great captaincy prospect for both the new teams.

Another Indian star, who has the experience of captaining an IPL team, Shreyas Iyer will also be on the radar of the two new teams for the captaincy role. Iyer left Delhi Capitals in search of a leadership role after leading the franchise for two and a half seasons. Iyer helped DC make it to their first final in 2020 and was exceptional as a leader.

His stature in the IPL has grown over the years and it won't be a surprise if an IPL team ropes him in as their new skipper. Iyer has plenty of experience behind his back having played 87 matches in IPL. He has 2375 runs to his name at an average of over 31.

David Warner

One of the best overseas batters in the league over the years, David Warner was released by his former team Sunrisers Hyderabad after a fallout during IPL 2021. Warner was sacked from captaincy midway through the IPL 2021 before being dropped from the playing XI by SRH. He remains the only captain to have led SRH to an IPL title in 2016 and will be a strong captaincy contender for both the new teams as well as some other franchises.

While he has a plethora of experience as a captain, Warner has been a consistent performer as a batter in the IPL. He has the highest runs among the overseas batters in the history of the league and fifth overall with 5449 runs in 150 games at a stunning average of over 41.

Steve Smith

Steve Smith has not had great campaigns in the IPL in the last few years but he remains an experienced leader who is capable of taking over the captaincy role for a top IPL side considering his experience and pedigree. Smith has led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals in the past.

He had led Rising Pune Supergiant to their maiden final in the 2017 season where they lost against Mumbai Indians just by 1 run. Smith has been part of the IPL since 2012 and the former Australia skipper can be a great leader for any team. He has 2485 runs to his name in 103 IPL matches at an average of over 34.

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes managed to play just one game for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 as he injured his finger in the opening game of the season before flying back home. One of the best all-rounders in the world at present, Stokes has been released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the mega auction and can trigger a bidding war at the auction table.

He is also an ideal candidate for captaincy with the kind of experience he possesses. Stokes is a crucial player for England across formats and has been amazing as an all-rounder. He has 920 runs and 28 wickets to his name in 43 IPL matches.

Here is a look at 5 potential captaincy candidates for two new IPL teams: KL Rahul KL Rahul is one of the favourites to take over as the captain of the Lucknow IPL team and is reportedly in negotiations with the franchise after leaving Punjab Kings. From KL Rahul to Shreyas Iyer: 5 potential captaincy candidates for new IPL teams Lucknow and Ahmedabad

Australia has appointed Pat Cummins as the new captain of the Test side and Steve Smith as the vice-captain in the aftermath of Tim Paine's sexting scandal. Paine had stepped down as the captain of the Test side earlier this month due to his involvement in the sexting scandal. The wicket-keeper batter has opted for a mental break from cricket and will not feature in the upcoming Ashes 2021-2022.

While Cummins' appointment as the captain of the Test side has been welcomed by many, the decision to appoint Smith as the vice-captain of the side has not gone down well with many. Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has lashed out at Cricket Australia for handing out different treatment to David Warner and Smith.

Chappell is not happy with the fact that Smith has returned in a leadership role while Warner is barred from taking any captaincy roles in the future. Both Smith and Warner were banned for one year each by Cricket Australia for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal which rocked Australian cricket in 2018.

“For starters, I have a problem — why is Steve Smith looked upon as a different punishment to David Warner? In fact, if anything, I think Smith’s crime was greater. For a captain to say, ‘I don’t want to know’ when cheating is involved, is not correct," said Chappell while speaking on 2GB’s Wide World of Sports radio on Saturday.

Chappell said both Warner and Smith should be banned from taking captaincy roles for life or they both should have the chance of leading the side. He called it unfair to bar Warner from leading the side while appointing Smith as the vice-captain.

“A captain’s got to know, he’s got to find out and he’s got to do something about it. Either Smith has a two-year ban from captaincy and so does Warner, or Smith has a life ban and so does Warner,” Chappell said.

Chappell also shared his two cents on Paine's sexting scandal and said had he done the same mistake, he would have expected Cricket Australia to sack him as captain but let him continue playing as a player.

“Cheating is cheating, whether it’s big cheating or little cheating, it’s still cheating in my book. If I’d have cheated as an Australian captain — I mean I made a lot of mistakes but I didn’t cheat. And if I had cheated, and if I had done what Tim Paine did, I would have expected Cricket Australia to not ask me to resign, they would have taken the job away from me and made sure I didn’t continue to play as a player,” Chappell added.

The modern era has quite a few superstar cricketers who have done exceedingly well with the bat. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, David Warner, Steve Smith, Quinton de Kock, Shai Hope, Babar Azam, Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Kane Williamson, etc. have done very well and are regarded as one of the best batters among the current crop of cricketers.

The 29-year-old Mohammad Amir, who retired from international cricket in late 2020, has had some tough battles on the field versus Kohli, Rohit, Warner, Williamson, etc. In a recent interaction, he was asked to name the 'hardest batsman to bowl at'. To this, Amir didn't name Kohli or Rohit.

Speaking to Zee News, Amir called India's ODI and Test skipper Kohli as the finest batsman in the current generation. However, he named Steve Smith as the toughest batter to bowl at.

Amir further explained why he has found it tough versus Smith and stated, “When I played in 2009 Shane Watson was a very difficult batsman to bowl to in white-ball cricket, but now I feel Steven Smith because I don't understand how Steve Smith bats, I bowl him outside off he'll flick it to the leg-side, if I bowl him on the legs, he'll make room and drive that bowl to covers. Tim Paine took over as Australia's Test captain following the sandpaper gate in early 2018, forcing then skipper Steve Smith to step aside from the post. While Paine did lead the side relatively well and enjoyed some good success, his tenure also ended in a controversial manner with his sexting scandal being exposed.

With Paine stepping aside as the Test captain as soon as the sexting scandal broke out, pacer Pat Cummins and ex-skipper Smith were interviewed by a Cricket Australia panel -- as per a report in Sydney News Herald -- for the position of skipper and deputy, respectively, on Wednesday (November 24). The entire process has brought CA a step closer to revealing Cummins as the next Test skipper.

Pat Cummins interviewed by CA for Test captaincy, Steve Smith likely to be pacer's deputy: Reports

Former Australia wicket-keeper Ian Healy has warned Cricket Australia (CA) against appointing Steve Smith as the captain of the Test team following Tim Paine's exit. Paine resigned as the Test captain of the side over his involvement in a sexting scandal back in 2017 when he had shared vulgar texts and graphics with a former female colleague.

Paine had admitted his actions from 2017 did not fit the 'standards' of that of an Australian Test captain or that in the general society while announcing his resignation just days ahead of the start of Ashes 2021. A number of names have come up in the fray to become the new captain of the Aussie Test team after Paine's resignation.

While Pat Cummins is reportedly the front runner for the top post, Smith's name has also been doing the rounds. Paine had replaced Smith as captain of the Test team back in 2018 after the latter was banned for a year for his role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa that rocked Australian cricket at the time.

Healy believes bringing Smith back as the Test captain will only add to the ongoing 'circus'. "We're going to add to the circus by Steve Smith being appointed after that (the Tim Paine episode)," Healy said in a podcast -Sportsday with Satts and Jase on Tuesday.

However, Healy insisted he doesn't consider Smith guilty for the ball-tampering saga that tainted Australian cricket back in 2018. The former wicket-keeper said Smith was not the one scratching the ball but could have been more proactive as captain and stopped what was going to happen.

"I've got no problems with Steve Smith captaining Australia again; he paid a heavy price for just being a lazy captain, that's about all he was guilty of," said Healey.

"Too many people around there think he was actually in there scratching that ball in South Africa, but if they've forgotten what happened he just wasn't aware enough as captain to pull the reins in and stop what was going to happen. That was his crime, and he got a year (ban) for it. So, I've got no problems, but I don't think he needs to come in as vice-captain or straight after Paine's indiscretion," he added.

Cummins is reportedly the favourite to take over from Paine as the new captain of the Australian Test team after Paine's departure and has the backing of several former cricketers including the likes of Michael Clarke, Mark Waugh among others.

However, Cricket Australia might be reluctant on giving captaincy to a fast bowler which might see them go back to having Smith leading the side in the longest format once again.

'Will add to the circus': Former Australia cricketer warns CA against appointing Steve Smith as Test captain

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has named his pick to become the next Aussie Test captain after Tim Paine stepped down from his post due to the sexting scandal. Paine announced his decision to quit Australia's Test captaincy last week while admitting that his actions from 2017 did not match the 'standards' of an Australian Test captain. Paine was involved in a sexting scandal in 2017 when he had exchanged lewd messages and graphics with a former female colleague.

In the aftermath of Paine's sensational resignation for the post, Australia have been left without a captain ahead of the start of Ashes 2021-22 from December 08. Clarke has put his weight behind senior fast bowler Pat Cummins, backing him to become the new Test captain of Australia. Cummins is one of the frontrunners to replace Paine with several former players in the favour of him becoming captain.

While there have been reports that former captain Steve Smith could be re-appointed as the skipper of the side, Clarke believes it is the right time for Cummins to take over. Clarke said the likes of Smith, David Warner, Mitchell Starc and others can help Cummins ease through captaincy in the current Test team.

"If we were three or five years on it might be different. But with so much seniority in the team, I think it is the right time for him. Because they can help him," Clarke said backing Cummins to become new Australian Test captain, on the Big Sports Breakfast show on Sky Sports Radio.

"Steve Smith, David Warner, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood. These guys have played a truckload of Test cricket. They can be there to help him, with or without the C or VC next to his name," he added.

Cummins is one of the best Test bowlers in the world at present and has represented Australia in 34 Test matches with 164 wickets to his name. While his credentials can't be doubted, Australia, like other major Test nations have not been in favour of the idea of appointing a fast bowler as captain of the side.

Ray Lindwall was the last bowler to lead Australia in a Test match in 1950 and the captains have since been from the batting ranks. However, Cummins has received the backing of many including Clarke, who feels he has what it takes to lead Australia in the longest format.

"You have to allow him time to get into this job. Because he hasn't had 10 years of captain first-grade or state cricket. But sometimes you can see certain things in people, and I think he's got it," Clarke said.

"He reads the game. He's a cricket captain. Looking at on the field tactics. The way he talks to his players. The way he sets the field when he bowls," he added.

Also Read: Explained! Why Tim Paine has stepped down as Australia's Test captain 4 years after sexting scandal Ray Lindwall was the last bowler to lead Australia in a Test match in 1950 and the captains have since been from the batting ranks.

Not Steve Smith! Michael Clarke picks Australia's next Test captain after Tim Paine's exit

After Tim Paine resigned as Australian Test cricket captain on November 19 over exchanging inappropriate text messages with a former female colleague in 2017, Australian selectors are looking for options to replace him ahead of the Ashes series. While addressing the press, teary-eyed Paine said that his actions in 2017 "do not meet the standard of an Australian cricket captain".

Latest reports have suggested that former skipper and batting mainstay Steve Smith emerged as one of the candidates for captaincy. Media reports further stated that selectors approached the country's cricket board. Although there isn't any official confirmation and it is understood that vice-captain Pat Cummins is the frontrunner for the top job.

Steve Smith for Test captaincy? Australian selectors looking for options after Tim Paine's sexting scandal

From 'John' the bookmaker to Paine's sexting: Controversies that have tainted Australian cricket since 1981

Aaron Finch-led Australia toppled Kane Williamson's New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition's finale, on Sunday evening (November 14) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Everything clicked for Australia, starting from the coin toss as the Men in Yellow beat the Black Caps by eight wickets, with seven balls to spare, to win their first-ever T20 WC title.

For the unversed, Australia had a chance to win the 2010 T20 World Cup title but lost to arch-rivals England in the summit clash. However, they punched above their weight this time around to clinch their first-ever title in the shortest format (eighth ICC title overall).

After Finch & Co.'s eight-wicket win over the Kiwis, chasing a competitive 173 in the final, former Aussie World Cup-winning coach John Buchanan shared his thoughts on whether the Men in Yellow can regain their dominance in world cricket. Under Buchanan-Ricky Ponting, the Aussies were unbeatable across formats -- both home and away -- and won the 50-over World Cup twice (in 2003 and 2007) whereas also clinched the Champions Trophy in 2006.

When a team is dominant in world cricket, it can win any format of the game and win away from home as well. To be able to win a World Cup away from home, while everybody was playing at a neutral venue, it is a wonderful achievement. It is a huge accolade for the team, winning their first T20 World Cup. From here, they take a flight and quarantine for the Ashes. That will be interesting to see, how they go into the Ashes which is a different format altogether. But, England isn't very strong Test playing nation and hasn't played well in Australia. So, win upon win upon win certainly builds real sense of momentum. You got to stay together for a longer period of time to dominate in world cricket.

EXCLUSIVE: Will Australia regain dominance in world cricket after T20 WC triumph? John Buchanan opines

Australia thrashed New Zealand by eight wickets in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2021 title in Dubai on Sunday. Riding on an unbeaten 77 from Mitchell March and a fabulous half-century from David Warner, Aaron Finch & Co. chased down the target of 173 runs with seven balls to spare to lift their maiden T20 World Cup title.

It was an intense summit clash between the two top sides of the tournament as the trans-Tasman rivals locked horns at the grandest stage of them all. Batting first, New Zealand rode on skipper Kane Willaimson's magnificent 48-ball 85 to post a fighting total of 172 runs on the board. However, Australia dominated the proceedings in their run-chase.

David Warner, who had a poor IPL 2021 campaign for Sunrises Hyderabad, proved form is temporary but class is permanent as he continued his purple patch in the final. Warner took the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners and got Australia off to a good start despite losing his opening partner Finch cheaply on 5 off 7 balls.

Warner looked unstoppable as he slammed 4 fours and three sixes in his 53 off 38 balls and combined with Marsh (77) to add an 88-run stand for the third wicket. The duo slammed half-centuries apiece to set up a comfortable chase for Australia and powered them to their maiden T20 World Cup title.

Australia's star batter Steve Smith hailed his teammate Warner for his terrific show in the tournament and hailed him for responding back to his critics in style. Smith said a lot of people had written Warner off after his poor IPL but he came to the tournament with great intent and took the final away from New Zealand.

"Warner's last two weeks have been amazing. A lot of people were writing him off. He came in with exceptional intent and took the game away at the start," said Smith as he hailed Warner after Australia won the final.

Smith also praised the Australian team for putting in the hard yards ahead of the T20 World Cup. Australia had lost bilateral T20I series against the likes of West Indies and Bangladesh in the run-up to the World Cup but won four out of five matches in the Super 12 to make it to the semi-finals where they defeated Pakistan in a thriller before beating New Zealand in the final.

"It means a lot. We have worked hard for a long time and it is honour to be here with the boys and take the trophy home," said Smith.

After India bowed out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021, cricket pundits and critics highlighted IPL fatigue as one of the reasons behind the pre-tournament favourites unsuccessful campaign. All the IPL players, who were included in India's World Cup squad regrouped as a national side in the United Arab Emirates just two days after the second leg of Indian Premier League 2021 ended on October 15 in Dubai. The tournament was treated as a precursor for the marquee ICC event the fans were expecting IPL to provide insight and good tune-up ahead of T20's showpiece event, however, players failed to impress in the first two campaign-decider matches, which led to talks of bubble fatigue. The talks intensified when Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah said "sometimes you need a break" after India lost the second match of the Super 12 stage against New Zealand. While former coach Bharat Arun said a short break between the IPL and the World Cup would have been good for the fast bowlers. Some of their T20 WC heroes were Warner, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

Captain Finch said at the post-match presentation, "This is huge. To be the first Australian team to be able to do it. So proud. We knew our backs were against the wall. We had some great individual performances, some great team performances. Can't believe people wrote him off saying he was done (Warner). That's when he plays his best cricket. Was almost like poking the bear. The player of the tournament for me (Zampa). Mitch Marsh - what a way to start his innings today. Wade coming into this game with an injury cloud but got a job done. Stoinis did the business."

Australia defeated New Zealand by eight wickets in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition's finale on Sunday evening (November 14) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Both sides locked horns with each other to win their first-ever T20 WC title but Aaron Finch-led Australia were too good for the Kiwis as they demolished Kane Williamson's Black Caps by eight wickets, with more than an over to spare. Opting to bowl first, Australia restricted New Zealand to a competitive 172-4 in 20 overs. The Kiwis were led by their skipper Williamson, who slammed a splendid 48-ball 85 studded with 10 fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood stood tall with the ball to return with 3 for 16. In reply, opener David Warner's 53 and Mitchell Marsh's 77 not out propelled the Aussies to an eight-wicket win 7 balls to spare. Australia suffered a crushing 8-wicket defeat against England in their Super 12 clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Saturday. The Aussies were bundled out for a paltry 12 runs in 20 overs before Jos Buttler's stunning knock helped England chase down the target with as many as 8.2 overs to spare and end Australia's unbeaten run of two games in the tournament.

Legendary Australian spinner Shane Warner lashed out at the team management for getting the selection and tactics wrong against England. Questioning the selection, Warne said he loves star batter Steve Smith but doesn't think he should be in Australia's T20 team at present.

Warne also criticised Australia for leaving all-rounder Mitchell Marsh out of the playing XI and sending Maxwell to bat at number four when wickets had fallen quickly against England. Warne took to Twitter to share his views after Australia's 8-wicket loss.

“Disappointing selection from Australia leaving Marsh out & Maxwell batting in the power play (he should always come in after power play). Stoinis should have gone in. Poor strategy & tactics from the Aussies. I love Smith but he shouldn’t be in the T/20 team. Marsh has to be !!” Warne said in a tweet.
