Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly feels replacing Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as the ODI skipper is the right call taken by the selector. The move from the BCCI has made it clear that the board is thinking about the future as Rohit as well as Virat Kohli's careers reach near completion. The duo have been in the set-up for long and play only in ODIs now after retiring from T20Is last year and Test cricket earlier this year. The upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 could be their final tournament but Ganguly feels they have to stay match-fit to make a case for selection.<h2>Ganguly wants Rohit-Kohli to play domestic cricket</h2>Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Ganguly said it was a 'fair call' to replace Rohit as ODI skipper. "Somewhere down the line, I feel that it’s a fair call. Rohit can keep playing and in the meantime, you keep grooming a young captain. So, I really don’t see a problem in that," he said as reported by news agency PTI.Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-women-vs-south-africa-women-smriti-mandhana-overtakes-odis-first-double-centurion-to-break-most-prestigious-w-odis-record-1760016742960">Mandhana overtakes ODIs' 1st double centurion to break THIS W-ODIs record</a>On the topic of their future in the team, Ganguly opined: "Whatever opportunity they get, they have to play domestic cricket. Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has received one ‘game-changing’ advice from his former captain and cricket great Sourav Ganguly ahead of the final Test against England in this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gautam, who was criticised for injecting a defensive approach in this new-look Test side, with results slipping away from India across four contested Tests, has been asked to include one bowler he hasn’t played in this series thus far, at the Oval. Ganguly, however, has also urged him to pick the right bowling combination and chase victory in London to level the five-match series.&nbsp;Shortly after India played out a statement draw at Old Trafford in Manchester, the head coach confirmed that there are no injury concerns among bowlers, and all are fit and available for selection for the fifth and final Test. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has opened up on the possibility of coaching Team India as made a shocking revelation on Sunday (June 22). Ganguly, the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), opened up on the ambitious opportunity to help Team India in a coaching capacity but does not see it happening anytime soon. The role is currently held by Gautam Gambhir who has endured a mixed tenure as coach in the last 11 months since taking over from Ganguly’s former teammate Rahul Dravid.<h2>Ganguly to coach Team India?</h2>"I got into different roles. After finishing, I became the president (CAB), then the board president (BCCI). I never got the time. But let's see what the future holds. I am just 50 and I am open to it. We will see where it goes," Ganguly said during an interview.&nbsp;Ever since retiring in 2008, Ganguly has not been in a coaching role having served as mentors for different Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. He also warned Gambhir about the outcome of the England series, which according to many will dictate his future as coach.&nbsp;"He is doing a good job. He started a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand. But he picked up with the Champions Trophy and this England series is going to be a big one for him," Ganguly said when asked about Gautam Gambhir’s role.

Former BCCI president <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sourav-ganguly">Sourav Ganguly</a> on Saturday (May 17) conveyed optimism regarding <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/eden-gardens">Eden Gardens</a> not losing its appointment with the 2025 IPL final and opined that the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) enjoys an 'excellent relationship' with the sport's omnipotent top governing body.
The BCCI has not announced the venues for the playoffs of the IPL officially despite having made the rescheduled league matches after the league was suspended on May 8 owing to India-Pakistan tension.&nbsp;
"No, no, we're trying -- talking to the BCCI," Ganguly replied when questioned regarding whether Eden Gardens would host the final according to the initial schedule.
"Eto sohoje sore jawa jay? (Is it that easy to shift the final). It's Eden's playoffs, and I am sure everything will be fine. I am very optimistic," said Ganguly.

A group of people also held a protest outside the historic venue on Friday, calling for the IPL final to be held in Kolkata."Protest does not help. BCCI has a very good relationship with the Cricket Association of Bengal," the former India captain said.
Refuting the delay in the finalisation of playoff grounds, Ganguly said: "Kolkata has completed its league matches, so Eden is not there in the first list."
Eden Gardens was given the final for Kolkata Knight Riders' title-winning perf ormance in the 2024 season.&nbsp;The ground also held the inaugural match of the 2025 edition.
The schedule of the tournament was delayed by a week with the final held on June 3 rather than the originally scheduled May 25.
According to the initial plan, Eden Gardens was going to hold Qualifier 2 on May 23 and the final on May 25.&nbsp;The BCCI, though, has kept the new venue of the final under wraps, generating more speculations.
The basis of the suggested change is the weather, as the southwest monsoon's onset is near the region during that period.&nbsp;
The CAB is said to have submitted data from IMD to the BCCI, stating that the weather in Kolkata will be conducive to hosting the final on June 3.&nbsp;But the BCCI is believed to have passed on the message that it is too early to make a decision based on long-term predictions and that better weather forecasts will be available only by May 25.
<h2>Ganguly 'surprised' by Kohli Test retirement</h2>
Test cricket in India has faced twin blows of late with captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma">Rohit Sharma</a> and batting legend <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</a> retiring from the game's longest format.
Responding to the news, the ex-India captain was shocked at Kohli's decision and lauded both players for their distinguished careers.
"It's their own choice. Can anyone quit the game without it being their own desire? But it's been a great career, and the same is true for Rohit Sharma. Kohli's retirement has left me surprised," Ganguly asserted.
Rohit was the first one to call time on his red-ball career, and soon afterwards Kohli quit, leaving a huge gap in the team.
The departures are at a critical time, with a challenging five-match Test series against England lined up next month.
Attention now turns to India's choice of next Test captain, with debate already raging about whether Shubman Gill or Jasprit Bumrah should be the new captain.
"It's something the selectors need to consider very seriously," said Ganguly.&nbsp;"There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages. They need to think long term. Whatever the selectors think and work through, they will decide. There's also the issue of Bumrah's injury -- whatever they decide.," Ganguly said.

Former cricketer Sourav Ganguly to feature in Netflix’s Khakee: The Bengal Chapter?

It was on October 15, 2000 in Nairobi, Kenya that India and New Zealand faced each other for the first time in an ICC ODI Tournament final. At the time, the only ICC events were the World Cup and Champions Trophy - the Tests didn't need a WTC and T20s were not invented yet.
It was a time when 260+ score in ODIs was considered good enough to win and anything between 280-300 almost guaranteed a win. During those times, the powerplay or erstwhile field restrictions last for first 15 overs only and just one ball was used unless in bad shape.
As the two sides get ready to take on each other in the 2025 Champions Trophy Final on Sunday (Mar 9), lets have a look at what happened the last time they met in Champions Trophy Final.
Led by Stephen Fleming, New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. The decision backfired as Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar added 141 runs for the opening wicket in 26.3 overs.

The partnership was eventually broken when Sachin got run out on a personal score of 69 off 83 balls. Ganguly, a young skipper, then found a partner in Rahul Dravid and the duo added 61 runs for the second wicket - taking India past 200 in 39 overs.
With 11 overs left and eight wickets in hand, India aimed at 300+ total but some great bowling by the Kiwis ensured that India finished at 264/6 in 50 overs. Ganguly getting out on 117 in the 43rd over also played a huge role in the innings being derailed.
Coming to the chase, India struck early as Venkatesh Prasad got Craig Spearman out on the last ball of the second over. One more wicket by Prasad and Kumble getting rid of dangerous Nathan Astle meant the Kiwis were 82/3 in 15 overs - end of the erstwhile first powerplay.
India took two more wickets at regular intervals as the Kiwis were pinned down at 132/5 in 24 overs but Chris Cairns had other plans. The all-rounder added 122 runs for the sixth wicket with Chris Harris and took the Kiwis really close to the target.
Prasad took out Harris for 46 in the penultimate over with Kiwis still needing 11 runs in nine balls. The Indian pacer then gave away seven runs in next three balls - leaving just four for the last over.
Cairns, already at 100, kept his calm along with wicketkeeper-batter Adam Parore as the Kiwis won their first ICC title by four wickets with two balls to spare.
