It’s been 20 years since the 2003 World Cup final in Johannesburg, where Ricky Ponting’s record-breaking 140* crushed a billion Indian hopes as Australia walked over the Men in Blue with a 125-run win. With both teams to face off in the summit clash for the first time in two decades on Sunday in Ahmedabad, Ponting recalls the inning his coach John Buchanan then labelled ‘the finest knock in World Cup history.’

The former Australia captain led from the front and played a captain’s knock alongside Damien Martyn, who, even with a broken thumb, slammed an unbeaten 88 off 84. A 234-run stand for the third wicket saw Australia post a mammoth 359 for two batting first.&nbsp;

Revealing how he approached his inning in the final, Ponting said he began relatively slowly but picked up during the fag end of the innings. Ponting even admitted informing the 12th man of asking everyone in the dressing room to tighten their seatbelts as he was about to unleash.&nbsp;

As promised, Ricky did that by hitting a couple of sixes to Harbhajan Singh in the 39th over. Without looking back after changing gears, he hammered each bowler to all parts of the ground, hitting eight sixes and four fours in his 121-ball stay at the crease.

"It had taken me about 70 balls to get to 50," Ponting recalled, speaking with cricket.com.au.&nbsp;

"And because the game was so under control and we were scoring quickly, I wanted to make sure I was there at the end."

"The 12th man came out, and I said, 'Tell the boys to strap the seatbelts on, I'm gonna go flat-out from now and see what happens'.

"I got most of them in the middle from there on in,” Punter added.

Confident of putting Australia in the driver’s seat with his tremendous hundred, Ponting said, "As the captain, it was my turn to stand up, and I walked off 140 not out, having shared (an Australian record) partnership with Damien Martyn at the time and posted 360 in a World Cup final.

"You're walking off there, and you're thinking, 'Well, that's done, game over – we've stood up here'," Ponting added.

<h2>Buchanan in awe of Ponting’s masterclass</h2>

Much like in this ongoing World Cup campaign, the way India had cruised ahead with momentum, Sourav Ganguly’s team was also on a rampage but fell shy of delivering on D-day.&nbsp;

Australia coach John Buchanan even went on to say, "You'd go a long way to find better. As captain ... leading by the front and leading by example, taking the attack, both to the spin and the quick bowlers of India ... at the end of a long tournament. Probably hard to go past that one.”

India and Australia will square off for the coveted World Cup trophy on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ricky Ponting recalls 2003 final win ahead of India-Australia World Cup summit clash in Ahmedabad

The cricket fever was at its peak in Kolkata's Eden Garden during the second semi-final of ODI World Cup 2023 between South Africa and Australia on November 16. The teams had ample support from the local fans despite playing at a neutral venue and one young fan went one notch up in supporting.

Wearing a South Africa shirt, a young boy in the crowd took off his shirt and swirled it around. The act rekindled the memories of former India skipper and Kolkata native Sourav Ganguly's&nbsp; act on Lord's balcony vs England in NatWest Series final, back in 2002.

ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH | Young fan does a Sourav Ganguly in Kolkata during Australia vs SA semi-final

Delhi Capitals Director for Cricket Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter and franchise skipper Rishabh Pant will be playing in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Ganguly made the comments at an event in Kolkata where Delhi Capitals players, including Pant, took part in a training season.

The meet, however, was to discuss the franchise's process and strategy ahead of the IPL mini-auction of players on December 19. The swashbuckling batter had got&nbsp;injured in a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022 and has been out for recovery ever since.

"He's (Pant) good now. He will play in the IPL next season," Ganguly told reporters, as quoted by PTI.

"Rishabh won't be practising here though. There's still time for him to get down to practice. By January (2024), he'll get even better," Ganguly further said.

“We were talking about the team. He is the captain, so he put in his views regarding the upcoming auction. That's the reason he has come here, to finalise certain aspects related to the team,” he added.

In Pant's absence during the 2023 season, David Warner had led the side. The Capitals, however, had a horrific season as they finished ninth in the 10-team event. Delhi managed to win just five out of their 14 games - the least in the season after Sunrisers Hyderabad's four wins.

Pant is expected to provide much needed stability and direction to Delhi as and when he plays. The wicketkeeper's absence also forced India to look for other options in ODI, T20I and Test side as well of which he was an integral member.

While KS Bharat took the gloves in India's second World Test Championship final in June earlier this year, KL Rahul has been doing the glove duty for India in ODIs including at the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023.

Rishabh Pant comeback date confirmed by former India skipper Sourav Ganguly

Rohit Sharma-led India are on a roll in the home ODI World Cup 2023 edition. They are the only unbeaten team so far, with eight back-to-back teams and became the first-ever to book a semi-final berth. Ahead of India's last league game versus the Netherlands, on Sunday (Nov 12) in Bengaluru, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly revealed that Rohit wasn't keen to take over as the all-format skipper, after Virat Kohli, but was later on convinced by Ganguly, the then BCCI chief.

"Rohit Sharma wasn't keen (on taking up India's captaincy in all three formats). It had gone to a stage where I told him 'you'll have to say yes otherwise I'll make the announcement.' Because he is an outstanding captain. And after Virat Kohli left, he was the best man to lead India. I am not surprised by what I am seeing," Ganguly said in a chat with Kolkata TV.

Ganguly explained the reason behind Hitman's reluctance and said, "Lot of cricket; Tests, ODIs, T20, IPL – he was already a captain there, lot of pressure. So he had a lot of his plate. But nothing can be bigger than being an India captain. I am happy that he took it and it makes me glad seeing the results."

Rohit became the T20I skipper in late 2021 after Virat Kohli's resignation, which came before that year's T20 World Cup in the UAE. Later that year, Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain with Rohit succeeding him as the white-ball skipper. Ultimately, Hitman became the all-format captain in early 2022 with Kohli's resignation from the top post in Tests, which came soon after the series loss to hosts South Africa.

While Rohit's full-time captaincy has had a lot of bumps, the national side is on a roll at the moment and only some distance away from winning the home ODI WC. Under him, India reached the 2022 T20 WC semi-finals and ended as runners-up in the 2023 WTC final.&nbsp;

Ganguly also revealed that head coach Rahul Dravid was also not keen to take the top post, which became vacant after Ravi Shastri's exit in late 2021. However, he agreed for the betterment of Indian cricket.&nbsp;

"It's a lot of time on the road. He has a young family, two young kids. Plus, he played cricket all his life. So it's not easy coaching but he agreed thinking about Indian cricket and I wish he does it in the future too. A coach needs to be given time; it isn't magic for a coach to produce instant results in 3-4 months. He needs time to turn things around which he has now, second year in his tenure," Ganguly said as he hailed Dravid.

Pakistan have a complex road ahead in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition. With one game to go, the Babar Azam-led Men in Green need a win&nbsp;versus England in their remaining tie and also hope for New Zealand and Afghanistan's exit to grab the leftover fourth semi-final spot. Ahead of their next outing, on Saturday (Nov 11), former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the Men in Green to reach the top four and play India in a high-voltage semi-final.&nbsp;

"I want Pakistan to reach the semi-finals and play India. It can't be a bigger semi-final than that," Ganguly told Sports Tak.

The last time when India hosted the 50-over World Cup, in 2011, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they faced arch-rivals Pakistan in the second semi-final and went past them by 29 runs in Mohali. As India are set to finish first and Pakistan can only take the fourth remaining slot, they can meet in the second semi-final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

It is to be noted that Pakistan's semi-final will only take place in Kolkata&nbsp;due to security concerns.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ganguly spoke at length about Rohit Sharma-led Team India's performance, who are on an eight-match winning streak in the ten-team tournament at home. While he accepted that the hosts have played way better than every opposition, he was quick to dismiss the reporter's claim that it will be a shock if India do not go on to lift the cup. He, however, mentioned that he does not feel the team's level will&nbsp;drop drastically in the knockouts.

"No, it won't be a shock (if this Indian team does not win&nbsp;the World Cup). It doesn't happen in sports like that. The entire nation is happy with the way India is playing. The way they have played in the 8 games, it appears that there is a big gap from the rest of the teams. I hope they keep playing like this. I don't think the level will drop so drastically (in semi-finals) that they will suddenly start playing poor cricket. Fingers crossed, they are looking very good," the former Indian skipper added.

Want Pakistan to reach ODI World Cup semi-finals and play India, says former captain Sourav Ganguly

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has slammed Babar Azam-led Pakistan's batting unit after their horror show versus arch-rivals India in match 12 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. The sides met each other on Saturday (Oct 14) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad where India opted to bowl first.&nbsp;

From 155 for 2, Pakistan slipped to 191 all-out in 42.5 overs with Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 19), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 35) and the likes of Md Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya claiming two wickets apiece. In reply, India made a mockery of the low total and chased it down in 30.3 overs to win by seven wickets in hand.

After yet another defeat to India in ODI World Cup history, Ganguly has come hard at the Pakistani batters. He was quoted as saying by Times Now, "During our time, Pakistan was a different team, this is not the type of Pakistan team we used to play. This team can’t handle the pressure during the batting. It will be hard for Pakistan to come back in this World Cup with this batting."

Further, Ganguly lauded Team India and said, "Rohit (86) played superbly against Pakistan. India’s every department is doing well. Batting, bowling and fielding is firing together and at the right time."

Pakistan have a very poor Net Run Rate (NRR) --&nbsp;-0.137 -- following the India defeat. They will try to regroup and asses their mistakes before taking on five-time winners Australia in match 18 of the ongoing edition at the M Chinnaswammy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday (Oct 20).&nbsp;

No Pakistan! Former India captain Sourav Ganguly predicts CWC 2023 semi-finalists

Axar Patel's injury opened the doors for R Ashwin's comeback in the ODI setup recently. After Axar suffered an injury during Asia Cup 2023, Ashwin was recalled in the ODI setup -- for the first time since early 2022 -- during the home ODIs versus Australia in the run-up to the 50-over World Cup, which starts on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

After the three ODIs, which India won 2-1, Ashwin replaced Axar in the CWC '23 final 15 as the latter is still recovering after&nbsp;the quadriceps strain. Now, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the decision and feels Ashwin is the right choice to replace Axar.

Talking to India Today, Ganguly said, "He is an outstanding spinner. He is probably the best off-spinner in the world. And also, he is the best spinner in India. I always think that in this format specialist is very important in this format. It’s a very good decision. Maybe it is a coincidence as Axar Patel was out for injury. But I think it's a very good decision."

Ashwin was impressive in the opening two ODIs versus Australia, claiming four wickets. He will look to start the upcoming ODI World Cup with a bang as India take on the Aussies in both sides' respective openers on October 8 (Sunday) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Ashwin is a veteran of 115 ODIs and has accounted for 155 wickets. He was part of India's victorious run in the 2011 ODI World Cup, co-hosted by India. Thus, his experience will come in handy for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. as they look to replicate the 2011 success and also end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought.

Here is India's final squad for World Cup 2023 -

Rohit Sharma (captain), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav

After Axar suffered an injury during Asia Cup 2023, Ashwin was recalled in the ODI setup -- for the first time since early 2022 -- during the home ODIs versus Australia in the run-up to the 50-over World Cup, which starts on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad. After the three ODIs, which India won 2-1, Ashwin replaced Axar in the CWC '23 final 15 as the latter is still recovering after the quadriceps strain. But I think it's a very good decision." Also read: Winning CWC '23 in India would bigger achievement for England than 2019 title, says ex-captain Morgan Ashwin was impressive in the opening two ODIs versus Australia, claiming four wickets. Thus, his experience will come in handy for Rohit Sharma & Co. as they look to replicate the 2011 success and also end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought. R Ashwin’s inclusion in Team India's CWC '23 squad is very good decision: Former captain Sourav Ganguly

CWC '23: From Sourav Ganguly to Md Azharuddin! Indian captains with most sixes in an ODI World Cup

Speaking on the same, former captain and trailblazer in Indian Cricket, Sourav Ganguly, said the Men in Blue must continue playing the same kind of cricket for the next 45 days if they were to realise their dream of winning the World Cup for the third time.

On the day when India's final 15 was picked, with Ravi Ashwin replacing injured Axar Patel in the squad, Ganguly said he is elated with how the Indian Team has performed lately and wishes to see them tick off all boxes during the World Cup.

World Cup 2023: Playing good cricket for next 45 days will determine Team India's fate: Sourav Ganguly

CWC 2023: How Team India has fared in last six editions

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes there is no favourite in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The continental tournament is set to be jointly held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the tournament opener between Pakistan and Nepal, on August 30, in Multan, Pakistan. Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will be facing Babar Azam &amp; Co. on September 02, in Pallekele in the island nation.&nbsp;

Speaking to India Today, Ganguly said, "Telling favourite is difficult in the Asia Cup. Anyone can win. Both the teams are good. Pakistan is also a good side. India is obviously a good team."

Ganguly, who led India to the Asia Cup final in 2004, further opined on Jasprit Bumrah. The ace pacer recently returned to international cricket, after a long injury layoff, during the Ireland T20Is. He ended with four scalps and the Player-of-the-Series award. On the speedster's return to the 50-over format in the forthcoming Asia Cup, Ganguly said, "Bumrah has done well in Ireland. He had played T20. Now have to play ODI. Have to bowl 10 overs in a match. So let's see."

No one is a favourite in Asia Cup, says Sourav Ganguly ahead of India's opening tie vs arch-rivals Pakistan

India's squad for upcoming Asia Cup has gotten much attention for a few players who were selected despite coming from huge injury layoffs. The result of selecting returning players, namely Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, meant some fringe players such as Sanju Samson being sidelined. The team, however, boasts good bowling attack and former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has termed it the best.

“It’s a very strong team. Bumrah is back, which makes the team even stronger. The bowling attack is very good – Shami, Bumrah, Siraj. You can’t get a better fast bowling attack,” Ganguly said in an interaction with Star Sports.

Speaking about spin options, even though leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion caused a furore among fans and former cricketers, Ganguly termed the squad capable of winning not only Asia Cup but the upcoming World Cup as well.

“And the spin, Jadeja, the wrist spinner (Kuldeep Yadav). Top batters. India is a fantastic side, who just have to turn up and play good, determined cricket during the Asia Cup and the World Cup,” he added.

The regional tournament - which is being played in 50-over format this year as a precursor to the ODI World Cup, will start August 30. India will play their first match against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

After the Asia Cup, the teams world wide will gather in India for the ODI World Cup which is scheduled from October 5 to November 19. The Indian team selected for the Asia Cup is expected to be more or less same for the ODI World Cup as well.

Asia Cup: Sourav Ganguly says India 'can't get better bowlers' than those named in squad

From Sachin Tendulkar to Kapil Dev: Top 6 Indians with most sixes in ODI World Cups

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The regional tournament will be played in a 50-over format as a precursor to the ICC ODI World Cup which starts on October 5.

India were battling quite a few injury issues but the players, namely KL, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah, have returned to fitness to be part of the India squad. While Iyer and Rahul will be making a comeback for the first time since injury, Bumrah is already playing against Ireland in T20Is as the captain.

Commenting on the squad and much-debated number 4 position, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said that there are enough options in the squad and anyone can play at the position.

"No. 4 is just a number, anyone can fit in," Ganguly said at an event in Mumbai. "I really don't think that anybody is born as an opener or No. 3 or No. 4. I had started in the middle order in one-day cricket and was asked to open when Sachin [Tendulkar] was the captain. Sachin also started at No. 6; when he opened, he became a world-class player.

"So anybody can play at No. 4. There's Virat Kohli for No. 4; there's Shreyas Iyer once he does well at the Asia Cup; there's KL Rahul. India has enormous talent."

Ganguly also opined that one position does not make much of a difference and all India need to do is select a player and stick with him at number 4.

"One batting slot doesn't make so much of a difference because you don't win a World Cup just with No. 4. There's no hard and fast rule that you need someone at No. 4, all you need to do is decide and let them play [at that position]," said the former BCCI chief.

The Asia Cup, which starts August 30, will be followed by the ODI World Cup and the current squad is expected to play in the ICC mega event, provided there are no injuries.

Sourav Ganguly brushes aside no. 4 debate after Asia Cup squad announcement, says 'anyone can play'

As India gear up for the upcoming Asia Cup and ICC ODI World Cup, the anticipation around the squad is getting quite an attention. While the date to announce the provisional squad for the World Cup is September 5, India will be naming their Asia Cup squad on August 21.

The main conundrum India selectors face is the wicketkeeper. Ever since Rishabh Pant got injured in a horrific car crash in December last year, the place has acted as a musical chair between KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. While Rahul is the better batsman among all three, Kishan is closest to Pant in terms of style and aggression.

Talking about the conundrum, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly thinks that India should go with Kishan as their wicketkeeper-batsman.

"Pant is the best wicketkeeper in the country, but you can see Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul (depending on his fitness); these two will be right up in Rohit's and Rahul's minds. I like Ishan Kishan because he just opens up the game for any team. I am sure Dravid will keep him in his plans," Ganguly said at a recent event.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, speaking to Star Sport a while back, had also said that giving Rahul both responsibilities (batting and keeping) in a tournament like Asia Cup is a 'no-no.'

"See when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking about keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no-no," Shastri had explained.

The Asia Cup starts August 30 with India playing its first match on September 2 against Pakistan. The World Cup is, however, a bit away with the scheduled date being October 5.

Sourav Ganguly picks wicketkeeper between KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan for India's Asia Cup squad

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has shrugged off the debate surrounding the team’s dilemma for the number four position as he considers India have too many good options. The Indian team has been struggling to put in a consistent batter at number four as key options like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been struggling with injuries. On the flip side, Ganguly thinks India can make use of Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma in that position as they have played there before.

<h2>Ganguly shrugs off No. 4 debate</h2>

"I saw in the newspaper that we don't have a number 4 batter. Who said we don't have a number 4? We have numerous batters. The ones we have, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, are all phenomenal," Ganguly said at an event.

The Indian team is hoping for positive team news in the coming days as they expect Rahul and Iyer to be back in contention for the Asia Cup. If they are fit, India can use Rohit as the opener and Virat at number three to solve any complications in the middle order. It is expected both could be passed fit in the coming hours before they are included in the Asia Cup squad.

The former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman also backed the young lot of Indian players as they are stamping their authority. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan are knocking on the doors for a permanent place in the side. Ishan is considered to be a final choice in the squad for the ODI World Cup as a first or second-choice wicketkeeper.

"Experience doesn't matter as much. Cricketers like Tilak, Ishan Kishan, and Jaiswal will play fearlessly and give the selectors ample options," he contended.

The Indian team will be expecting to put on a good show at the ODI World Cup when they take the field in October. India will start their World Cup journey against five-time champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

Ganguly shrugs off No. 4 debate "I saw in the newspaper that we don't have a number 4 batter. ALSO READ | No Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer! Harbhajan Singh names his India squad for Asia Cup 2023 The former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman also backed the young lot of Indian players as they are stamping their authority. CWC 2023: Sourav Ganguly shrugs off No. 4 debate, says 'we have Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli...'

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star performer for Team India in their massive win over West Indies in the two-match Test series opener in Dominica. The left-hander started his Test career with an impressive 171 to become the 17th Indian to hit a century on Test debut, 113th overall. Jaiswal started on a promising note and never looked out of sorts to make a roaring start to his international career.&nbsp;

Ever since Jaiswal announced his arrival in style at the international level, talks are rife that he should be given a run in the white-ball formats as well. While India have only a handful of games left prior to the ODI World Cup's commencement, at home, some feel Jaiswal can still be tried in the 50-over format. Former Indian skipper and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has backed Jaiswal to be a part of the ODI WC squad. In conversation with the Telegraph on the young player, Ganguly heaped praise on the 21-year-old and feels he is a 'must' for the ODI WC squad.

“Scoring a hundred on debut is always massive. I too have done it, so I know how special it is. Even technique-wise, he seems really good. A left-handed batsman’s presence in the team always helps. So, having him in the World Cup squad is a must,” Ganguly emphasised.

It is to be noted that Jaiswal is not part of India's ODI squad for the West Indies tour. His name has been announced in the India squad for the 2023 Asian Games but looks unlikely to make the cut for this year's marquee ODI event on home soil. At present, the young batter is gearing up for India's second and final Test, to be held in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, which commences on July 20.

Rohit Sharma-led India will go for a series whitewash to also add vital points in their kitty in the new 2023-25 WTC cycle.

'Having him in ODI World Cup squad is a must': Sourav Ganguly calls for THIS young Indian star's inclusion

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has passed his opinion on the star duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after they were rested for the T20I series against West Indies. Both Virat and Rohit are not part of the Indian team in the shortest format of the game with indications of their careers already over. However, according to Ganguly, the duo still has a lot to offer and is not done yet in the T20I format. India will play West Indies next month in a five-match T20I series with two matches to take place in the USA.

<h2>Not the end of the road</h2>

"Pick your best players, it doesn't matter who they are. In my opinion, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still have a place in T20I cricket and I cannot see why a Kohli or a Rohit cannot play T20I cricket. Kohli was in great form in the IPL, and both have a place in T20 cricket if you ask me," Ganguly said in an interview.

Rohit and Virat have not played in the T20I format since the T20 World Cup semifinal against England in Australia in 2022. There have been muted talks of the end of the road in the T20I format for Rohit and Virat who have been rested more often.

The reigns have&nbsp;been offered to Hardik Pandya who has done well since taking over the role. He led the Indian team to a series win against New Zealand and Sri Lanka before he got the better of Ireland last year.

"They just have to keep playing. They will have to keep performing in whatever chances they get. It happens all the time. Only 15 can be picked in the squad, and 11 can play. So, somebody has to miss out. I am pretty sure their time will come," he added.

IND vs WI Series: Sourav Ganguly opines on Virat, Rohit's T20I future, says 'somebody has to miss out'

India and Pakistan are set to lock horns in the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, later this year in October-November. So far, India have been unbeaten versus their arch-rivals in the 50-over mega event. They enjoy a 7-0 winning streak over the Men in Green and Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be eager to keep their record intact as the two teams will meet at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on October on October 15.&nbsp;

Ahead of the marquee clash, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly opined on the India-Pakistan games and made a big statement. Speaking to on Star Sports, Ganguly said, "There is a lot of hype in this match but the quality has not been that good for a long time because India kept on winning one-sided. Pakistan probably defeated India for the first time in the T20 World Cup in Dubai."

Ganguly's remark made heads turn but he probably was talking about the Indo-Pak World Cup clashes. In both ODI and T20 WCs, India have been at their dominant best versus Pakistan. They lead Pakistan 7-0 in ODI WC and have a 6-1 lead in T20 WC history. However, Pakistan have made amends in the previous few face-offs. They beat India by 180 runs in the 2017 Champions Trophy final and thrashed them by ten wickets in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Moreover, the two sides met in last year's Asia Cup where both won a game each. The two encounters saw a last-over finish.

In addition, India and Pakistan played a humdinger in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia where Virat Kohli's masterclass led to Men in Blue's thrilling win. Thus, former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has now reacted to Ganguly's remark.&nbsp;

<h2>'Ganguly is trying to play mind games'</h2>

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit said, "I don't agree with him saying that India vs Pakistan matches are one-sided in favour of India. No doubt you have beaten us a lot in ICC World Cups before but that hasn't been the case since 2017. We beat India at the T20 World Cup in UAE and last year in the Asia Cup, won one, lost one. Yes, India defeated Pakistan at the T20 World Cup in Australia but that was purely because of Virat Kohli. He won it single-handedly. Clearly the best-ever T20 innings."

Further, Basit also responded to Ganguly claiming that India versus Australia games have better quality. Ganguly had stated, "India vs Australia tends to be a better game in the World Cup because the quality is better'. To this, the former Pakistani cricketer said, "He also said that India vs Australia is a bigger crowd puller than India vs Pakistan. To that, I would just want to say that 'Brother, when India plays Australia, are roads in your country empty? No. They are empty whenever there's an India-Pakistan match - both in India and in Pakistan. Everyone is glued to their TV screen and are praying. Look at the ticket prices for the World Cup; India-Australia costs are nowhere close to India-Pakistan's. So I feel that Ganguly - DADA ji - is just trying to play mind games."

It will be interesting to see what happens when the two sides meet in this year's ODI WC in India. Before they, they will also meet in the Asia Cup (possibly on three occasions). Overall, the arch-rivals have a chance to lock horns on five instances this year. Thus, some blockbuster games are on the cards.

He's playing mind games: Ex-Pak batter on Sourav Ganguly's 'IND-PAK matches are one-sided' remark

One of India’s greatest captains Sourav Ganguly, who during his time faced peak Australia and most star-studded Pakistan team, opines that India-Pakistan clashes nowadays are more about hype than quality because of India’s one-sided domination in head-to-head matches at ICC events in recent past.

One of India’s greatest captains Sourav Ganguly, who during his time faced peak Australia and most star-studded Pakistan team, opines that India-Pakistan clashes nowadays are more about hype than quality because of India’s one-sided domination in head-to-head matches at ICC events in recent past. Ganguly’s comments came following the CWC 2023 schedule announcement, wherein India will face arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 15. Although recent history suggests something else as Pakistan claimed their first win over India in the T20 World Cup in 2021, defeating them by a record ten wickets in Dubai. Meanwhile, during the 2022 edition in Australia, India won the close tie at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by five wickets, thanks to an incredible match-winning 82* by star batter Virat Kohli. ALSO READ: Ashes: Oz head coach throws weight behind Lord's show, says he's disappointed with McCullum's 'beer' comment However, in the 50-over World Cups, India has won every time, from first beating them in 1992 in Australia to clinching victory in the previous edition in England. As things stand, India lead the head-to-head tally 8-0. "There is a lot of hype in this match, but the quality has not been that good for a long time because India kept on winning one-sided. Pakistan probably defeated India for the first time in the T20 World Cup in Dubai," said the former Indian captain on Star Sports, as quoted by Hindustan Times. India-Australia clash holds more value Following India's trophy-winning spree from 2007 to 2013, India-Australia contests were the ones to look out for. Having attained superb results in away Tests on two occasions – in 2018 and 2020, India has dominated Australia lately. With these two star-studded teams set to kick-off their respective CWC campaigns with the game in Chennai on October 8, Ganguly feels this match will garner attention on the quality-cricket ground. With Australia drawing first blood in their recent WTC Final in London earlier, India will have revenge on their mind heading into the vital World Cup match. "India did not play well in that tournament (2021 T20 WC), but according to me, India vs Australia tends to be a better game in the World Cup because the quality is better," Ganguly added. Meanwhile, India will face Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 31 to September 17, while the Men in Blue will host Australia for a three-match series just before the start of the World Cup on October 5. CWC'23: India-Pakistan matches lack quality, it's just about hype: Ganguly

India lost the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final to Australia by 209 runs at The Oval, London early this year. They ended as the runners-up in the 2019-2021 cycle and finished at the same spot in the 2021-23 cycle. The Indian players assembled in London soon after the end of IPL 2023 and, hence, many believe it was the reason for their dismal show.

India opted to bowl first and had reduced Australia to 76&nbsp;for 3 before Travis Head slammed 163 and Steve Smith's 121 took Australia to 469 all-out. In reply, India got bundled out for 296, with Ajinkya Rahane (89) and Shardul Thakur (51) being the top scorers. Australia declared at 270 for 8 in their second essay, setting a mammoth 444-run target. Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. folded for 234 to lose convincingly on the final day.&nbsp;

After India's poor showing, many former cricketers and experts opined that Indian players were not well prepared as they returned to the purest format after playing in the IPL for two months. Nonetheless, former Indian captain and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly slammed such a theory.

“I don't agree with this theory. Ajinkya Rahane also played IPL and he played very well during IPL and World Test Championship final. So I don't believe in this theory. Some of the Australian boys (Cameron Green, David Warner), played well in IPL also and did well in World Test Championship,” Ganguly said while speaking to PTI.

Ganguly added, "After IPL finished, there was enough time to acclimatise to Test cricket. They went to England and they played. It used to happen in the past. You played ODI cricket and you played Test cricket, things used to happen very, very quickly and so I don't believe it's an issue. So I believe that even if you play IPL, you should have the ability to adjust your technique and temperament and do well in a Test match."

Even in the 2019-21 WTC summit clash, where India lost to New Zealand in Southampton, the Indian players had come after playing IPL 2021. Nonetheless, the league was postponed in early May due to the COVID-19 threat. Thus, they still had over a month before the finale but lost to the Kiwis by eight wickets.

Was India underprepared for WTC final after IPL 2023? Sourav Ganguly disagrees with the 'theory'

The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Tuesday (June 27), released the full schedule of the upcoming ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year. As soon as the schedule got revealed, former cricketers and experts shared their take on it, predicted the top four, etc. Talking about Team India, the home side will kick off their campaign versus Australia, in Chennai, on October 08 with the tournament opener to be held on October 05, in Ahmedabad, between defending champions England and New Zealand.&nbsp;

At present, India have plenty of their star cricketers recovering from injuries -- such as Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Nonetheless, India still have a lot of firepower in their line-up with stars including captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, etc. The two-time winners will hope to get off to a fine start in the ten-team tournament and go the distance with an aim to win the ODI World Cup after 2011, when MS Dhoni-led India won the championship on home soil.

Rohit, at 36, and Kohli -- who is 34 -- are in the twilight of their respective careers and, thus, the 2023 ODI WC is expected to be their last in the showpiece event or overall. In this regard, it is expected that the rest of the team will gear up to give their all for the superstar duo Rohit and Kohli. Sourav Ganguly, India's former captain and BCCI President, shared his take on Rohit and Kohli's future after the schedule announcement.

As soon as the schedule got revealed, former cricketers and experts shared their take on it, predicted the top four, etc. Talking about Team India, the home side will kick off their campaign versus Australia, in Chennai, on October 08 with the tournament opener to be held on October 05, in Ahmedabad, between defending champions England and New Zealand. Will it be curtains for Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma after 2023 ODI World Cup? Sourav Ganguly shares his take

Former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has expressed his surprise at Virat Kohli's unexpected decision to relinquish his role as the captain of the Indian Test cricket team. Ganguly revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was not prepared for Kohli's departure, as it was his personal choice to step down following the South Africa series in 2022.

Fans have been actively campaigning for Kohli's reinstatement as the Test captain, highlighting his remarkable record as captain on social media. During his tenure, Kohli secured the fourth-highest number of victories for an Indian Test captain, with an impressive 40 wins and 11 draws in 68 matches. His win percentage of 50% places him third among all 28 Test captains who have led their teams in 40 or more matches.

In an exclusive interview with Indian news channel Aaj Tak, Ganguly acknowledged the fans' support for Kohli but emphasised that only Kohli himself could provide the reasons behind his decision to step down. Ganguly stated that dwelling on the matter now serves no purpose as the selectors had to appoint a new captain, and Rohit Sharma was deemed the best option at that time.

"BCCI was not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time," Ganguly said.

However, Kohli had said something in a completely different note. The RCB Captain had said, “There was no prior communication to me at all from when I announced the T20I captaincy decision until the eighth (of December) where, as I said, I got a call one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting," hinting at a clear rift between him and the board.

Virat Kohli's captaincy stint in Test cricket was highly successful, guiding India to the final of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021. Under his leadership, India achieved several milestones, and Kohli became the most successful Test captain in Indian cricket history at the time of his departure.

Sourav Ganguly claims he didn’t know Virat Kohli was quitting Test captaincy

India coach Rahul Dravid defended the batters after former India skipper Sourav Ganguly grilled post-India's 209-run loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia. This is India's second consecutive loss in the WTC Finals. They had lost the previous WTC Final in 2021 against New Zealand.

Ganguly informed Dravid that the batting average of the Indian batters has fallen in the last couple of years and that the batting order needs a rework. Dravid, however, said that the fall in average is due to the result-oriented nature of pitches across the world and the competitiveness of the World Test Championship.

“Our top-5 is quite experienced. These players will be considered legends; the same boys won the series in Australia, the same boys won in England as well. They are good players. But I accept, and I think they will as well, that they didn't do justice to the high standards that they've set for themselves,” said Dravid to Ganguly during a chat on Star Sports.

Dravid further explained that some of the wickets India batted on have been quite challenging and that every match in the WTC cycle is important, hence the dip in averages.

"We are working on it. Some of the wickets have been quite challenging. This was a good wicket, I admit, but there were many conditions which weren't quite good for batting. In the WTC cycle, every match is important. We can't play for draw anymore. We have difficult wickets in India, and result-oriented wickets are there outside India as well. So, all players have taken a hit on their averages, it's not just our players.

“But yes, we know that we need to score runs on the board to give our bowlers a chance. That's what we used to do,” added the coach.

India were asked to chase a target of 444 runs to win the WTC Final after Australia declared their innings on 270/8 on day 4. India did well to end the penultimate day on 164/3, needing 280 runs on day 5 with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane on the crease. Australia, however, struck early on the final day as Scott Boland took out Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the space of three balls.

India could never recover from that and folded out for 234 runs in their second innings with Nathan Lyon claiming four wickets.

WTC Final: Sourav Ganguly questions coach Rahul Dravid on falling average of Indian batters

Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a torrid run in IPL 2023. The David Warner-led side were on the back foot before the ongoing season commenced with regular captain Rishabh Pant out of action after a horrific accident on December 30, 2022. Since the start of the season, DC struggled for momentum and while they did achieve some inspiring wins, they became the first team to be eliminated this season after two back-to-back defeats in the last week.&nbsp;

Ever since Ricky Ponting was appointed as the DC head coach, ahead of IPL 2018 (back when the franchise was known as the Delhi Daredevils), the franchise has done considerably well (reaching the playoffs thrice and playing their first-ever final in 2020 edition). However, Ponting-led team management have been criticised for their team combination, underutilisation of key players, etc. in IPL 2023. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has suggested Sourav Ganguly's name as DC's next head coach.

<h2>GANGULY AS NEXT DC COACH?&nbsp;</h2>

"Sourav Ganguly's presence in the Delhi dugout is a big deal. I think if Dada is given the responsibility of coach as well, he can make a big difference in this team. Dada has knowledge of the psychology of Indian players. He knows how to run the dressing room and Delhi should definitely take advantage of that. At the time of the toss, Warner has said that his team has now started preparing for the next season and in this context, it would not be wrong to see Ganguly in a changed role," said Pathan.

Ganguly was part of the DC setup in IPL 2019 as the team advisor before he came back into the setup as the Director of Cricket before IPL 2023. Ganguly has led IPL teams in the past, such as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the now-defunct Pune Warriors (PWI), but never donned the coaching hat. It will be interesting to see if the DC team management remains intact following their dismal run in IPL 2023. If Ponting is sacked, Ganguly can be a worthy successor.

Only time will tell if DC back their under-fire team management or make wholesome changes ahead of IPL 2024.

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly-led ICC Cricket Committee has abolished the controversial and often talked-about ‘soft signal’ rule from cricket, which will come into affect from the 2023 World Test Championship final, starting June 7th at the Oval.

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly-led ICC Cricket Committee has abolished the controversial and often talked-about ‘soft signal’ rule from cricket, which will come into affect from the 2023 World Test Championship final, starting June 7th at the Oval. As reported by Cricbuzz, Ganguly has conveyed this rule change to the finalists - India and Australia as well. Other than this, the committee also brought in another important change for the all-important clash. From now onwards, the flood lights can also be switched on during the game in case of bad lighting. Also, just for the final, a reserve day has been kept (on June 12th), considering how often the weather changes in England. ALSO READ: Ashes: Not panicking will help us nullify England's Bazball approach, says Australia spin great Nathan Lyon Even during the inaugural WTC final two years ago between New Zealand and India, two days plus of play got washed out due to rain, and the result came on the reserve day itself as the Kiwis won the maiden title by eight wickets. What is the 'soft signal' rule in cricket? As per cricket rules, a soft signal is when an on-field umpire sends a particular dismissal, based on what he saw, upstairs to the TV umpire as he remains unsure of it, and based on recordings presented to the third umpire from different angles, he can either stay with the decision or change it – which will then be counted as the final decision. For the third umpire to alter the on-field umpire’s call, there has to be conclusive evidence, else the third umpire will give the benefit of the doubt to the on-field official, and the decision would stay. But now with the rule change, either the on-field umpire will give a decision or the TV umpire will take the call when sent upstairs. The change was recommended by the ICC's Men's Cricket Committee, endorsed by the Women's Cricket Committee, and ratified by the ICC's Chief Executives Committee. "The committee deliberated this at length and concluded that soft signals were unnecessary and at times confusing since referrals of catches may seem inconclusive in replays," Ganguly, the head of the Men's Cricket Committee, said. Meanwhile, other than this, the ICC has also made it mandatory for the players standing in ‘high-risk’ positions to wear helmets for protection. It includes the keeper coming up to the wickets while a pacer is bowling, the close-in fielders etc.

Match 54 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) thrash the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets in a 200-run chase. This became MI's third successful 200-plus chase this season. In addition, they completed the most successful run-chase in terms of balls remaining (21).

In pursuit of 200, MI started well before losing openers Ishan Kishan and captain Rohit Sharma before Suryakumar Yadav's 35-ball 83 and Nehal Wadhera's 34-ball 52* propelled them to a big win.

Talking about SKY's knock, the right-hander toyed with the RCB bowlers and timed his strokes to perfection, to all parts of the ground, as MI completed the run-chase in 16.3 overs. During his impressive 140-run second-wicket stand with Nehal, SKY dominated proceedings as his inning was laced with 7 fours and 6 sixes at a whopping strike rate of 237.14.

After his dismissal, Sourav Ganguly -- former Indian captain and BCCI chief -- lauded SKY and tweeted, ""Surya Kumar yadav the best T20 player in the world .. it seems he bats on a computer .. @surya_14kumar @mipaltan"

IPL 2023: 'Suryakumar Yadav is the...' - Sourav Ganguly in awe of MI batter after RCB tie

Top wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, etc. continue their protest against Wrestling Federation of India&nbsp;(WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment claims. Since then, several big names have responded to the entire controversy. Recently, Sourav Ganguly -- India's former captain and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s ex-president -- also&nbsp;joined the bandwagon and reacted.

In a recent event, Ganguly was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI, "Let them fight their battle. I really don't know what's happening there, I just read in the newspapers. I realised one thing in the sports world, that you don't talk about things which you don't have complete knowledge of. I hope it gets resolved. Wrestlers bring a lot of accolades to the country &amp; hopefully, it will be resolved."

Meanwhile, following&nbsp;a scuffle that broke out between Delhi Police and wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar in the national capital in New Delhi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur issued a statement on Friday (May 05). Thakur has revealed that the Delhi Police is&nbsp;conducting a fair probe against the accused, who is also a BJP MP.

Thakur told reporters, "As far as athletes’ demands are concerned, I would like to say we promised to conduct fair elections, and IOA will be conducting that."&nbsp;He added, "We promised to form a committee, and we have done that too; FIR was to be lodged, and Delhi Police have done that as well.
