After ICC allotted Pakistan the hosting rights of the Champions Trophy 2025, the BCCI denied sending its team across the border for the eight-team tournament for security reasons, later persuading the apex body to convince the PCB to accept the hybrid model. Though the host denied doing it in the first go, they later agreed by putting conditions that the BCCI also had to accept to ensure the tournament went ahead.
As a result, the ICC and the PCB picked Dubai as the venue for all India matches, and every team in Group A, including the host Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand, had to travel to the UAE to play the Men in Blue. India has won all its group games, with a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/live-score-online-ind-vs-nz-champions-trophy-2025-india-vs-new-zealand-live-today-cricket-match-from-dubai-toss-ball-by-ball-commentary-8770619" rel="dofollow">44-run win over the Kiwis</a> on Sunday being their latest.&nbsp;

While the par score in Pakistan (in this competition) is way higher than it is in Dubai, with at least eight hundreds and 17 fifties scored across all league matches compared to just three centuries in Dubai, Ganguly said had India played in Pakistan, they would have scored much more, winning convincingly.&nbsp;
"The pitches in Pakistan are much better. India would've scored more runs there,&rdquo; Ganguly said on the sidelines of a CAB event.
Even against New Zealand in India&rsquo;s last league match, the Men in Blue scored 249 &ndash; the highest in three contested matches at the venue thus far.
Meanwhile, India will face Australia in Dubai on Tuesday (Mar 4) in the first semi-final, whereas, New Zealand will take on the Proteas in the second game the next day in Lahore.&nbsp;

Ganguly’s befitting reply to England broadcasters over India enjoying ‘one venue’ advantage

India will face off against Australia in the first semifinal of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy 2025</a> on Tuesday (Mar 4) in Dubai, and former skippers Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly have thrown their weight behind the Men in Blue to deliver a crunch knockout punch. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/live-score-online-ind-vs-nz-champions-trophy-2025-india-vs-new-zealand-live-today-cricket-match-from-dubai-toss-ball-by-ball-commentary-8770619" rel="dofollow">India beat New Zealand by 44 runs</a> on Sunday to stay at the top of Group A, maintaining their winning streak in the ODIs this year.
While Ganguly, under whom India beat Australia in the famous Champions Trophy tie in Nairobi (in 2000), said India is a successful team in ICC events, having won a tournament last year only. India can beat anyone on a given day he said as Gavaskar almost echoed on the same line, adding on the spin-friendly track (to be used for the semis clash), India will hold an advantage over their nemesis.
"India won the last T20 World Cup (in 2024) and played in the final (of 50-over in 2023). It is a very strong team in white-ball cricket, no matter who is on the opposite side. It has the capability to defeat anyone," Ganguly said in a chat with ANI after India beat New Zealand in the Champions Trophy.

Against the Kiwis, the Indian spinners picked nine of the ten fallen wickets, with mystery bowler Varun Chakaravarthy returning with a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/varun-chakaravarthy-attains-best-bowling-figures-for-india-on-champions-trophy-debut-surpasses-shamis-record-8772889" rel="dofollow">record-breaking five-for</a>. India defended a paltry total of 250 against an upbeat New Zealand side - something Gavaskar believes must boost their confidence heading into the crucial semis tie.
The ex-captain-turned-broadcaster also added that should the game be played on a similar surface (used for the New Zealand match), the Indian spinners will come in handy, further explaining the best-case scenario where India can emerge victorious.
"On this surface, yes, because Australia don't seem to have the kind of spinning attack, apart from the fact that they are missing out on key players like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. Their batting is good. The batting is very aggressive. The ideal thing would be for India maybe to chase, rather than having Australia chase," Gavaskar said while chatting with India Today.
<h2>Would India change the winning XI?</h2>
India rested seamer Harshit Rana, bringing Varun as his replacement, a move that paid dividends, resulting in India winning all three group-stage matches this edition.&nbsp;
However, against Australia in the semis, India could be tempted to stick with the same winning XI, with little chance of making one change maximum.
While the batting order needs no tinkering, the management could face a headache on whom to drop to bring in another seamer for the knockout tie.
Considering Varun helped India win the game, he could retain his place, while Kuldeep Yadav seems the one to face the axe.&nbsp;

Ranji Trophy 2025: Meet Ankit Chatterjee, Bengal’s youngest player at 15, surpassing Ganguly

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is not ready to discount the visiting team’s chances of pulling off a win against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting Friday (Nov. 22). Having done it not once but twice in the past two outings, Ganguly knows what the Indian Team can do when the chips are down.

Unlike the last time, when India was without their star players in Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah, by&nbsp;the time of the fourth Test, three of the four will likely feature in the BGT opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth this time; with Rohit missing the first game for personal reasons, and ace seamer Bumrah captaining India in his absence.

Chatting with former cricket greats England’s Michael Vaughan and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Ganguly, while replying to their predictions of Australia steamrolling India in BGT 2024-2025, said he would not predict the result, believing India can shock the world by beginning the series on a high despite the generic conscious backing Australia to break the walls.

"Let's see. I don't rule India out. When they went in 2021, we got all out for 36 in Adelaide. We had lost [Virat] Kohli, and by the time we went to Brisbane, there wtthat as no Kohli, no Rohit Sharma, no Jasprit Bumrah, no Ravichandran Ashwin, and these guys came back and beat a top-notch Australian side. There's tremendous talent in India," Ganguly replied to Vaughan and Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Ganguly reminded the two hosts of what the Indian bench strength pulled off the last time, adding that&nbsp;none had backed stars-less India to win in Brisbane, chasing 330 plus on day five.&nbsp;

"I wouldn't predict the series yet because, to be honest, because the last two tours, we beat them both the times. Did anybody think on Day 5 in Brisbane, when India had to get 330, Rishabh Pant played that knock and won them the match? Not just Pant but Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur as well. Shubman Gill contributed for India to win,” the former captain continued.

<h2>‘1-1 after Adelaide game’&nbsp;</h2>

Having surrendered two BGTs at home previously, Australia would be raring to go against the second-ranked Indian Team this time. The hosts, however, planned a tougher schedule this time, with the Optus Stadium in Perth hosting the opener, Adelaide (venue for the second Test) the Day/Night clash and Gabba in Brisbane for the third game before the action moves to Melbourne and Sydney.

Despite the odds against them, Ganguly feels this Indian team can win one of the first two matches, setting up a cracker of a series.

"It might well be that by the time the Adelaide Test finishes, it's 1-1, and then you go to Melbourne and Brisbane and Sydney, and the series gets decided. If you look at the 2018 series, it rained in Sydney, and India were on the verge of winning that Test as well. We could have won that series 3-1.&nbsp;

“These are some fearless players. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I think it's going to be a fascinating series. Weather permitting, all five Test matches will have a decision, and it can go any way," Ganguly concluded.&nbsp;

Unlike the last time, when India was without their star players in Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah, by the time of the fourth Test, three of the four will likely feature in the BGT opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth this time; with Rohit missing the first game for personal reasons, and ace seamer Bumrah captaining India in his absence. ALSO READ: BGT: Perth Test skipper Bumrah hints at Mohammed Shami’s potential return, says ‘if all goes well…’ Chatting with former cricket greats England’s Michael Vaughan and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Ganguly, while replying to their predictions of Australia steamrolling India in BGT 2024-2025, said he would not predict the result, believing India can shock the world by beginning the series on a high despite the generic conscious backing Australia to break the walls. BGT: Ganguly not ready to discount India despite Aussie wave; reminds Vaughan, Gilchrist of 2020/21 results

Former India captain and BCCIpresident Sourav Ganguly backed head coach Gautam Gambhir to lead the side to glory Down Under despite the latest setbacks. Following Rahul Dravid’s departure as the top boss in June this year, the Indian board appointed Gambhir as his replacement till December 2027.&nbsp;

Considering Gambhir’s credentials as a mentor that helped his former IPL team KKR to win the title this year, their third overall, the fans expected the same turnaround for the Men in Blue, which was far from what unfolded.&nbsp;

Under Gambhir, India won the T20I series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but suffered defeat in the bilateral ODI series against the Lankans for the first time in 27 years before surrendering to New Zealand at home (0-3) in three Tests, a dark moment in Indian cricket.

Ganguly, who knows what pressure Gambhir must be under while heading to Australia, where they have to win 4-0 or better to qualify directly for the WTC Final 2025, said it is too early to evaluate Gambhir’s coaching run, urging fans to be patient with his style and bestow trust upon him.

"All I will say is let him be. I saw some criticism of what he said in the press conference. It is the way he is. Just because he has lost three Test matches and a one-day series against Sri Lanka, the straight talk has not been looked at nicely. But that is the way he is. Let’s give Gambhir a chance," Gambhir said in a chat with Revsportz.

<h2>Ganguly defends Gambhir’s approach</h2>

Gambhir is straightforward in his approach, both in cricket and otherwise too.&nbsp;

Lately, before flying Down Under, he addressed the media in Mumbai, and upon being asked about his take on Ricky Ponting’s comments on Virat and Rohit’s form leading into the BGT, Gautam reverted that Ponting must remain concerned about the Aussie team and their players.

Reflecting on the same, Ganguly said the on-the-face approach works against Australia, and Gambhir must stick to it.

"Ultimately, you have to go and play the game hard. That is the way it is, and it has happened for ages against Australian cricket teams. That makes this series even more competitive and more followed by people," Ganguly continued.

‘Let him be’ – Sourav Ganguly throws weight behind under-fire India coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of BGT

Delhi Capitals (DC) has roped in former India batter Hemang Badani as their new head coach ahead of IPL 2025. While Badani has replaced Ricky Ponting, ex-India cricketer Venugopal Rao has succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the franchise’s new director of cricket. DC also decided against renewing Praveen Amre’s contract in a major revamp, who had served as the assistant coach and talent scout since 2014.

Per the latest reports, the DC’s ownership took this call to overhaul the coaching staff and overall running structure of the franchise that is yet to win an IPL title. As part of the franchise’s restructuring, DC’s co-owners – GMR Group and JSW Sports – are said to be swapping the operational leadership roles every two years for the respective teams in the IPL and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

In a media statement on Thursday (Oct 17), the franchise said, "Key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player release and retentions of both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals' board, and will be decided mutually by senior leadership of both groups."

<h2>Badani’s impressive CV urged DC</h2>

Despite having had several top names in the leadership group before, DC ownership seemed impressed by Badani’s CV as a coach. Badani has been a successful coach in the domestic T20 circuit. During his early days in the IPL, Badani was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) backroom staff before joining Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), winning the title three times with them.

Besides, Badani joined SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) as a fielding coach and scout in IPL 2022.&nbsp;

The former India batter also tried his hand at coaching in the overseas T20 leagues, working as an assistant coach with SunRisers Eastern Cape in 2023, when they won the inaugural SA20 title.&nbsp;

Lately, Badani worked as a coaching consultant for Jaffna Kings in the Lankan Premier League (LPL), helping them win the latest edition.

Meanwhile, DC hasn't announced the list of retentions, with the submission date being October 31.

IPL 2025: Hemang Badani joins Delhi Capitals as new head coach; Venugopal replaces Ganguly as team director

Former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar lauded 'true champion' Virat Kohli for coming out to bat at No. 3 on Day 2 of the first Test between India and New Zealand, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Thursday (Oct 17). Kohli was promoted to No. 3, from No. 4, due to Shubman Gill not playing the series opener because of&nbsp;a stiff neck. Kohli came out soon, with India opting to bat first on Day 2 following a washout on Wednesday, after captain Rohit Sharma's dismissal (2). He, however, failed to open his account and was dismissed by William ORourke for a&nbsp;0 (9).

Manjrekar, however, hailed Kohli for doing the difficult job, at No. 3, and cited how Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar never wanted to come up the order in Tests but only in ODIs.

<h2>'Ganguly, Tendulkar never wanted to go up the order in Tests'</h2>

Despite Kohli's flop show, Manjrekar praised him for turning up in a tricky situation, on an unusual slot. He wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "Hats off to Virat Kohli! Coming out to bat at no 3 bcoz the team needed it. Ganguly, Tendulkar were very keen to open in white-ball cricket, but never wanted to go up the order in Tests. That’s a true champion right there for you! Virat"

Kohli has a woeful record at No. 3 (where he batted after eight years and averages a woeful 16.16 including the latest outing). However, he still came out to bat to fill in for Gill. This also became his first-ever duck in Tests since 2021 (also coming against NZ). The former Indian captain has been below-par in Tests for long. His last fifty-plus score came in Dec 2023 (versus South Africa). In addition, he has only two centuries since 2019.

Ind vs NZ: 'Ganguly, Tendulkar never wanted...', Manjrekar lauds Kohli for batting at No. 3 in Bengaluru Test

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly says the reason behind Pakistan Cricket's downfall is 'dearth of talent' in the country. The comments come days after Pakistan's 0-2 loss against Bangladesh in the home Test series. It is the first time Pakistan lost a Test to Bangladesh at home and that too by 10 wickets (first one in Rawalpindi).

"I see a genuine dearth of talent in the country. Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan."

"That's the memory of Pakistan for us, but that doesn’t win matches in the modern generation of cricket. Every generation has to produce outstanding players to win, and when I look at Pakistan in world cricket -- I saw them in the West Indies World Cup, in India during the World Cup, and now after the Bangladesh series loss -- there is a dearth of talent in that country," Ganguly said while talking to news agency PTI.

"The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I'm not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don't see in this squad," Ganguly added.

Pakistan cricket is caught in turmoil ever since failing to make it to the semis of last year's ODI World Cup.

Babar Azam was removed from the captaincy across formats and Shan Masood was made Test skipper with pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi sharing the responsibility in the T20Is.

The changes, however, did not bear any fruit as Pakistan lost both T20I and Test series in Australia earlier this year - the first one since the ODI World Cup 2023.

After the Australia tour, Babar Azam was handed back the captaincy in the T20Is while Masood remained in position. The loss against Bangladesh, however, has put Masood under pressure and the upcoming home Tests against England could be his last as skipper if the team does not perform well.

'Not saying this with...,' Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on downfall of Pakistan Cricket

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly thinks Rishabh Pant needs to get better in white-ball cricket. The comments came as Pant made a comeback in the Test side for the first time since his life-threatening car accident in December 2022.

“He will be an all-time great in Tests if he keeps performing like this. For me, he needs to get better in the shorter formats. With the talent he has, I’m sure with time, he will become one of the best,” said Ganguly, who also is the mentor of Pant-led Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals, at an event in Kolkata on Monday (Sep 9).

Ganguly, however, has no doubt that the wicketkeeper-batter is going to be one of the greats in the red-ball cricket.

“I consider Rishabh Pant one of India’s best Test batsmen. I’m not surprised that he’s back in the side, and he will continue to play for India in Tests,” he said.

Ganguly also spoke on India's upcoming Test series and said that the tour of Australia and England (next year) are going to be the most important ones.

“I am looking forward to their tour to Australia; that, for me, will be the real test for the squad. Then, when they tour England in July, these are the two most important tours, to be honest," he said.

Before travelling to Australia in November later this year, India host Bangladesh and New Zealand at home. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for first Test against Bangladesh which starts September 19 but pacer Mohammed Shami was not included in that due to injury.

Ganguly said India has a potent pace attack for the tour of Australia and England which will be boosted once Shami is back.

"I think the pace bowling department, with Bumrah and Siraj, and once Shami comes back, will be strong,” said the former skipper.

On Monday, Ganguly changed his profile picture to a black colour theme which prompted a few X users (previously Twitter) to take a jibe at the legendary cricketer. Ganguly captioned his post as ‘New Profile Pic’ but was not far from facing criticism for his earlier comments. One of the X-handle users questioned his solidarity act by mentioning his “stray incident” comment last Sunday. Another user suggested Ganguly speak on the entire issue rather than make token comments.

Kolkata rape-murder case: Sourav Ganguly changes X profile pic in solidarity with victim, receives flak

From Sachin Tendulkar to Rahul Dravid: Top 6 Indian batters with most fours in ODI cricket

Former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly broke silence on replacing Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as all-format skipper during his tenure. Ganguly said going by how things unfolded surrounding the captaincy saga involving Virat, everyone on social media criticised and abused him, adding that since India won the T20 World Cup under Rohit, everyone seems to have forgotten who took that call in the first place.

In 2021, ahead of the T20 World Cup in the UAE, Kohli announced his decision to step down from T20I captaincy, citing workload management as the reason behind it.&nbsp;

With Team India exiting the tournament inside the Group Stages after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand, a few shocking calls afterwards took the nation by surprise, as a few months later, Kohli announced he was stepping down from the ODI and Test captaincy.

Meanwhile, Kohli, during an explosive presser on the 2021/22 South Africa Tour, admitted he was informed 90 minutes before the team selection meeting (for Proteas ODIs) that he was being replaced by Rohit as the ODI captain. That statement, however, contradicted what made headlines later, with several reports suggesting that Kohli knew about this decision change much before.&nbsp;

After losing the Test series, he decided to quit Test captaincy as well.

The then BCCI President, Ganguly, faced plenty of flak for how things unfolded with Kohli, with fans bashing and abusing the former India great for his apparent ego clashes with Virat.

Three years later since that episode, and at a time when under Rohit and former head coach Rahul Dravid India won the T20 World Cup in the Americas, Ganguly reflected on the same and said, “When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me,” Ganguly said in a chat with Aaj Tak.&nbsp;

“Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team,” he continued.

<h2>A new era begins in Indian Cricket</h2>

With the conclusion of the 20-team tournament in the USA and West Indies, Dravid’s tenure as head coach ended, and Rohit also announced his decision to quit T20Is.&nbsp;

Although he continues to lead Team India in ODIs and Tests, someone new will replace him as India’s T20I captain; that decision, however, will now be taken under the new head coach and former two-time World Cup-winner, Gautam Gambhir.&nbsp;

Gautam will take over the proceedings from the white-ball Sri Lanka Tour, including three T20Is and as many ODIs, starting July 27.&nbsp;

Former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly turned 52 on Monday (Jul 8). Wishing the former BCCI chief and current Delhi Capital mentor, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) posted a heartfelt message for him on social media

“Maharaja. Dada. The Prince of Kolkata. Happy Birthday, Sourav Ganguly!" wrote KKR on its official X account.

The post comes at a time when KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir is being touted as Rahul Dravid's replacement to be the next India head coach. If Gambhir, the only applicant, accepts the job then he'd have to resign from his position as KKR mentor.

Could Ganguly become the next KKR mentor? Only time will tell!

In the past, Ganguly has played for the three-time IPL champion from 2008 to 2010. He was let go ahead of the 2011 auction and was ironically replace by Gambhir as skipper. In 2011 and 2012, Ganguly played for now-defunct Pune Warriors India&nbsp;but bid adieu to cricket for good after that.

Under Ganguly, India transformed into a side which could challenge oppositions away from home. India shared the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy under his leadership before being the runners up in 2003 ODI World Cup.

Ganguly captained India in 49 Tests, winning 21 of them and losing 13 along with 15 draws. In ODIs, Ganguly led India in 146 matches and won in 76 of those matches.&nbsp;

As a batter, the southpaw was a treat to watch when on song, especially in 50-over cricket. He has 11,363 runs in ODIs - the ninth most overall and the third most for India after Sachin Tendulkar (18,426) and Virat Kohli (13,848).&nbsp;

Ganguly also has 22 ODI hundreds to his name - joint 10th most overall and fourth most for India behind Kohli (50), Tendulkar (49) and Rohit Sharma (31).

In Tests, the former batter has 7,212 runs - the seventh most for India.

Sourav Ganguly to be next KKR mentor? IPL team shares heartfelt birthday wish amid Gautam Gambhir exit reports

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels Rohit’s Indian Team has what it takes to win the 2024 T20 World Cup Final against South Africa. Ganguly backs the Men in Blue to break the 11-year ICC trophy drought deadlock by topping another unbeaten unit at the tournament, South Africa. However, he jokingly remarked if India failed to win this time (the second ICC Final in around seven months), Rohit would jump into the Barbados ocean.

Since taking over the India captaincy from Virat across formats a couple of years ago, Rohit has led the Indian Team to three ICC Finals, including the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia last year and the 50-over World Cup at home a few months later; however, India lost to Australia on both occasions.

After seven months since that heartbreak, Rohit has led his team to another ICC tournament final, this time facing a different opponent in South Africa.&nbsp;

“I don't think he can lose two World Cup finals in seven (six) months. He will probably jump into the Barbados ocean if he loses two finals under his captaincy in seven months,” Ganguly said, as quoted by PTI.

Rohit has been India’s best batter in the past two matches, both crucial - one against Australia and a semi-final clash against England. While he made headlines for his inning of the tournament against the Aussies, scoring a brilliant 92, Rohit weathered the big-game storm in the semis by scoring a fifty (57) on a tricky Guyana track against England.&nbsp;

Complimenting Rohit for his incredible outings thus far, Ganguly said, “He has led from the front, batted brilliantly, and I hope it continues tomorrow. Hope India finishes on the right side, and they should play with freedom. They have been the best side of the competition. I wish them luck; I wish they win. Hope they have a little bit of luck tomorrow because that is required to win big tournaments.”&nbsp;

<h2>‘Hope Rohit does it’</h2>

Much like a billion Indian cricket fans worldwide, Ganguly also hopes that Rohit leads his team to the ultimate glory. However, he backed his credentials to get the job done, considering his success as the Mumbai Indians captain in the IPL, having won five trophies.

“Rohit has the record of winning five IPL titles, which is a huge achievement. Winning an IPL sometimes is more difficult. Don't misquote me, I'm not saying IPL is better than international cricket,” said Ganguly.

“But you have to win 16-17 (12-13) matches to win an IPL; here you need to win 8-9 matches to win a World Cup. The honour is more in winning the World Cup, and I hope Rohit does it tomorrow,” Ganguly concluded.

Backing any former Indian ahead of the touted overseas names like Stephen Fleming, Mahela Jayawardene and the Australian duo of Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting, Ganguly feels BCCI need not look beyond the Indians (who had applied for this job), adding there is enormous coaching talent in this country, with everyone rightfully deserving to be part of the system.

"I am in favour of an Indian coach because we have enormous talent in our country, enormously high-skilled players who have done wonders for Indian cricket, and very rightfully, they should be a part of the system," Ganguly said while addressing this topic during his speech at the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference's opening in Mumbai.

Ganguly also talked about Gambhir, saying if he had applied for this post, he made a strong case for himself.

"...has he applied? I really don't know because first he has to apply and then only, he will get the job...I think (May) 27th was the last date of application," Ganguly said of Gambhir.&nbsp;

<h2>Gambhir on a roll following KKR’s IPL win</h2>

Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the IPL 2024 trophy, beating SunRisers Hyderabad in the most one-sided final. Though all the participating players deserve the utmost credit for this winning campaign, Gautam Gambhir, who Shah Rukh Khan roped in as the mentor for this season, earned the right to be called the man to make this happen.&nbsp;

Gambhir’s brief coaching credentials speak for him, having led his former franchise, Lucknow Super Giant (LSG), to playoffs in two consecutive seasons, and Ganguly feels with the latest title run campaign with KKR, he pressed his case for becoming Team India’s next head coach.

"If Gambhir applies — you can see it on TV — he worked for KKR this year. I was with Delhi (Capitals), you can see the hunger, the passion and the want to win and I will be happy if he applies and if the board decides to give him the job, I think he is a good candidate," Ganguly said.

Meanwhile, Team India is in the Caribbean and the USA for the 20-team tournament starting June 2. India will play one warm-up game against Bangladesh and open their campaign against Ireland on June 5.

India is placed in Group A alongside co-hosts USA, arch-rivals Pakistan, Canada and Ireland.

Gambhir on a roll following KKR’s IPL win Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the IPL 2024 trophy, beating SunRisers Hyderabad in the most one-sided final. Though all the participating players deserve the utmost credit for this winning campaign, Gautam Gambhir, who Shah Rukh Khan roped in as the mentor for this season, earned the right to be called the man to make this happen. Gautam Gambhir receives backing from former captain as India head coach talks intensify

Delhi Capitals (DC) director of cricket Sourav Ganguly has labelled Rishabh Pant as an 'instinctive captain' after DC ended their league games with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 64 of IPL 2024 on Tuesday (May 14). Under Pant, DC ended their league games with 7 wins and equal number of losses. They have a very slim chance, mathematically, of qualifying for the playoffs.

Reflecting on Pant's captaincy -- who has impressed at times but also made mistakes from time to time this season -- Ganguly told Jio Cinema, "Pant is a young captain, he'll learn with time. The way he returned from injury to play a full season; we had our doubts during the off-season."

"Indian players are crucial, especially since the TATA IPL shifted to 10 teams. I am very happy for him that he returned to play so well over a full season. He has all my well-wishes for whatever is next," Ganguly&nbsp;opined.

He further opined, "With time, he'll become a better captain. Nobody is a great captain from day one, but he is an instinctual captain, he makes decisions on the ground. With more time, he'll get better."

Pant returned to competitive cricket after 1.5 years during this IPL season. In 14 games, he ended with 446 runs -- ninth-most -- at a strike-rate of 155.40 along with three fifties. As a result, he got selected in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.&nbsp;

DC had a topsy-turvy ride in the league stage but saw plenty of new match-winners emerge such as Jack Fraser-McGurk, Abhishek Porel, Rasikh Dar Salam, Triston Stubbs, Mukesh Kumar, etc.

On pacer Rasikh, former Indian skipper Ganguly said, "You've seen Rasikh's development over time. The more matches he played, the better he got. It's not easy to bowl on the Delhi wicket. This wicket is great, and the ground isn't that big, so I think for any bowler, it isn't easy to bowl here. Rasikh has improved a lot. Mukesh has been our best bowler this season. He bowls all the difficult overs, whether at the start or at the death. There has been no match this season where we didn't need his bowling in the death. "

He added, "We knew that conceding sixes would lead to more losses, so he has consistently delivered there. Our Indian bowlers have been great this season."

‘Rishabh Pant is an instinctive captain’: Sourav Ganguly backs DC star to get better with time

Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain and BCCI chief, has opened up on Rohit Sharma's struggles in IPL 2024 with the upcoming T20 World Cup to be held next month. The current Indian skipper has managed only 349 runs in 13 games at an average of 29.08. Out of 349, he scored 105* in Mumbai Indians (MI)'s 20-run home loss versus Chennai Super Kings (CSK) early in the tournament. Following his ton, he has struggled to get going, not even crossing the 40-run mark since then.

Moreover, Rohit has crossed the double-digit mark only twice in his last six outings for Hardik Pandya-led MI, who were the first team to bow out of the playoffs race this season. Speaking on Rohit's form, Ganguly said -- ahead of his side Delhi Capitals (DC) knockout clash versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in New Delhi on Tuesday (May 14) -- that Hitman is a 'big tournament player' who will do well in the upcoming T20 WC, in the West Indies and USA in June.

<h2>'Rohit plays well in big tournaments'</h2>

Talking to the reporters, Ganguly said, "India is a very good team. Rohit will play well in the World Cup. He plays well in big tournaments. At the big stage, he will be fine."

Rohit has second-most runs by an Indian in the T20 WC history -- 963 in eight editions (after Virat Kohli's 1,143 -- the overall top run-getter). However, he hasn't dominated any of the previous editions. Nonetheless, he was in top gear in the last ICC event, i.e. the home ODI World Cup last year. Ending with 597 runs in 11 games, Rohit will be eager to replicate the same in the upcoming T20 WC.

Rohit will lead India in the mega event. Further, Ganguly has backed Kohli and Hitman to open for the Men in Blue. While Rohit is not in good touch, Kohli is the leading run-getter in IPL 2024 -- with 661 runs in 13 games, including 5 fifties and a ton.

‘Big tournament player’ Rohit Sharma will be fine in T20 WC, reckons ex-India skipper Sourav Ganguly

Delhi Capitals’ Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting feel keeper-batter Rishabh Pant should play the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA. The attacking left-handed batter returned to competitive cricket for the first time in IPL 2024 since December 2022, when he suffered multiple injuries in a horrific road accident.&nbsp;

While Pant hasn’t looked in his element upon his comeback to the cricket field, and understandably so, DC’s top management feels he still has it in him to deliver for India in the 20-team tournament starting on June 1. Speaking to PTI in New Delhi on Monday (April 22), Ganguly said Pant should be included in India’s 15-man squad and play in the middle order.&nbsp;

"Yes, I think so, Pant should be part of the World Cup squad," Ganguly said in New Delhi on Monday.&nbsp;

"He should bat in the middle order. Where exactly is difficult to say because of match-ups and right-left combinations depending on who bowls. It also depends on the situation,” the former India captain added.

On the other hand, DC’s head coach&nbsp;Ponting&nbsp;feels Pant was a bit apprehensive at the beginning of this season but has felt confident about his keeping and batting since.

Punter also commented on Pant’s confidence, saying the India star trusts his abilities and that he’s too good a player to get dropped from the T20 World Cup squad.

"He's starting to get a bit more trust and belief in his body as well," Ponting said.&nbsp;

"I think early on, he had been a little bit apprehensive as to what he could do, especially with the wicketkeeping side of it. With his batting, coming into the tournament, he had pretty good trust in his abilities."

"I think his batting is getting better and better by the game. I've been asked a lot already over the last couple of weeks, now that he's back and playing, what I think about his World Cup chances. I think he'll be in the squad for sure. I think he's too good of a player and can have too much of an impact on the game,” Ponting continued.&nbsp;

<h2>Pant ahead of DK, Sanju in the pecking order</h2>

Although the Indian selectors are yet to sit with Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to pick the 2024 T20 WC squad, the latest reports have emerged that Pant is leading the race to be the first-choice keeper, with KL Rahul and Sanju Samson being considered&nbsp; the backup options.&nbsp;

However, the selectors are not looking at Dinesh Karthik as one of the options despite the veteran cricketer scoring heaps of runs for RCB in IPL 2024.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting back Rishabh Pant to play 2024 T20 World Cup

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday (April 7) will see a bottom of the table clash as five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) host Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium. Both teams will come with low confidence into the game, which is a repeat of the 2020 IPL final. Mumbai have lost all three matches so far while DC have one win. Ahead of the clash in Mumbai, DC’s Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly shared his opinion on Hardik Pandya, who has been facing the backlash of fans.

<h2>Ganguly opines on Hardik</h2>

"Fans shouldn't boo Hardik Pandya, it's not correct. The franchise has appointed him captain. That's what happens in sports, whether you captain India or you captain your franchise, you are appointed as captain," Ganguly said in the pre-match press conference.

"But T20 is such a format that sometimes you get into this situation, where you lose a couple of games and then find a way to get back. It's going to be a good game tomorrow. We will compete, we are a good team as well, we have some quality players. &nbsp;It's not Hardik's fault that he has been appointed as captain," he concluded.

Delhi Capitals are likely to be without Kuldeep Yadav for the clash as he suffers with a groin niggle. According to Espncricinfo, Kuldeep has been advised to not play in the upcoming match against the Mumbai Indians so that he could be fit for future matches. In his two matches so far, he ended with figures of 2/20 against Punjab Kings and 1/41 against Rajasthan Royals.

However, since the latter game, he has not made it to the squad and was not unavailable as an impact substitute as well. This clearly indicated that Kuldeep is not one hundred per cent for the 2020 IPL runners-up.

DC’s only win this season came against defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday. Since then they have lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a humiliating display in Vizag. DC were beaten by 106 runs and gave away 272 runs while fielding.

IPL 2024: Sourav Ganguly backs Hardik Pandya, says ‘fans shouldn’t boo’ MI skipper

Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, Sourav Ganguly, has revealed when the National Cricket Academy will give the fitness clearance certificate to Rishabh Pant ahead of IPL 2024. As per Ganguly, the NCA in Bengaluru will clear Pant to participate in the IPL on March 5.

Pant, who was appointed DC’s captain after the franchise didn’t retain their previous skipper, Shreyas Iyer, met with a road accident on New Year's Eve in 2022, suffering several serious injuries. Although the locals saved him and succeeded in pulling him out of the burning car, Pant had to undergo several surgeries on his knees and other joints to stand tall.

Sourav Ganguly on when will NCA clear Rishabh Pant ahead of IPL 2024

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly feels middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan's game is more suited for Test cricket than T20Is. Sarfaraz has been one of the debutants for India in their ongoing five-match Test series versus England at home. The right-hander earned his debut cap in the third Test, in Ranchi, and made back-to-back fifties in his first game.

Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly said, "I think he’s more of a five-day player. His game is suited for that. T20 is a different format. And the amount of runs he scored in domestic cricket, in the Ranji trophy and in first-class cricket has been phenomenal. And as they say, if you score runs, it doesn’t go to waste. And that’s exactly what’s happened to Sarfaraz."

Sarfaraz has toiled hard in the domestic circuit. He&nbsp;has a phenomenal record in first-class cricket, amassing 4,056 runs in 47 matches at an average of 68.74 while registering 14 hundreds and 13 half-centuries. Thus, his years of hard work was evident in his debut Test, in Rajkot, where he ended with 62 and 68*. However, he could not have the same impact in the following Test in Ranchi, where he only managed 14 runs overall. He will look to finish the series on a high with a big score in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala with the series already in India's kitty.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma-led India lead the five Tests 3-1 following their five-wicket win in Ranchi. Ahead of the final Test, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's squad for the series finale. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah -- who was rested for the Ranchi clash -- has returned to the squad whereas KL Rahul remains unfit, having travelled to London to get an expert opinion on his injury.

India’s updated squad for the 5th Test:&nbsp;Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

And that’s exactly what’s happened to Sarfaraz." Sarfaraz has toiled hard in the domestic circuit. He has a phenomenal record in first-class cricket, amassing 4,056 runs in 47 matches at an average of 68.74 while registering 14 hundreds and 13 half-centuries. Thus, his years of hard work was evident in his debut Test, in Rajkot, where he ended with 62 and 68*. However, he could not have the same impact in the following Test in Ranchi, where he only managed 14 runs overall. He will look to finish the series on a high with a big score in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala with the series already in India's kitty. India’s updated squad for the 5th Test: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

IND vs ENG: Sarfaraz Khan’s game is suited to Test cricket, feels former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly

Former BCCI president and India captain Sourav Ganguly is surprised with top-tier players, mainly Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, for skipping Ranji Trophy matches. Ganguly came down hard on the batting duo for overlooking the premier domestic tournament for respective reasons despite receiving clear and strict directives from the Indian Board to appear in the matches. As a result, the BCCI released them from the central contract list for the upcoming season.

Ganguly said everyone is supposed to play in the Ranji Trophy, including the centrally contracted players not picked for any Indian squad.&nbsp;

Following the South Africa ODIs and T20Is late last year, Ishan Kishan informed the BCCI of remaining unavailable for selection for an indefinite period, citing mental fatigue. He skipped the Ranji Trophy matches for his state (Jharkhand), and despite repeated warnings from the board, Ishan didn’t appear to play for his team.

Instead, Kishan was training with Hardik Pandya – the newly appointed captain of Mumbai Indians (the team Ishan opens the batting for in the IPL) in Baroda.&nbsp;

"You are supposed to play first-class cricket. Once you are a contracted player, you are expected to play the Premier tournament,” Ganguly said.

“Shreyas Iyer is playing the semi-final for Mumbai in a couple of days' time. Yes, they are young people, and Ishan has surprised me. He was part of the Indian team in all formats. Such a big contract in IPL. I don't know why he has done that. You must play especially when you are as gifted as Ishan Kishan.&nbsp;

"When you are playing for India in all formats, you must play. I was surprised by his decision not to," said Ganguly.&nbsp;

<h2>BCCI is right in&nbsp;taking&nbsp;this call</h2>

Ishan’s teammate and top middle-order batter, Shreyas, suffered the same fate.&nbsp;

Upon regaining full fitness ahead of the Asia Cup last year, Iyer played a handy role in helping India reach the 2023 World Cup finals but again suffered back issues during the ongoing India-England series.&nbsp;

Considering the reoccurrence of his back-related problems and the lean patch in red-ball cricket, the selectors dropped him from the squad for the last three Tests.&nbsp;

However, upon getting fitness clearance from the NCA, Iyer got included in Mumbai’s squad for the Ranji semis.

"I think the BCCI wants them to play first-class cricket. I am surprised why Shreyas Iyer has not played Ranji Trophy. It is a premier tournament, and you are supposed to play.&nbsp;

“So, it is a decision by BCCI and what they have thought right they have done. Every contracted cricketer must play first-class cricket because that is the basic premise of cricket in this country," Ganguly told Revsportz.

However, all concerned players here, including Pandya, returned to competitive cricket, playing in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Navi Mumbai.

‘I am surprised by his decision to skip Ranji matches’ – Ex-BCCI boss Sourav Ganguly on Ishan Kishan

Rohit Sharma-led India beat England by five wickets on Day 4 of the fourth and penultimate Test to clinch the five-match series 3-1 with a game to spare. After India's triumph over Ben Stokes-led England, former Indian all-rounder Suresh Raina heaped praise on captain Rohit. Raina lauded Rohit's leadership and made a big claim, saying Hitman is 'the next MS Dhoni'.

<h2>'He is&nbsp;giving&nbsp;chances to youngsters the way MS Dhoni did'</h2>

Speaking to TOI, Raina said that Rohit has been giving lot of chances to youngsters, just like Dhoni, and has handled the team well in pressure situations. "He is the next MS Dhoni. He has done well. He has been giving a lot of chances to youngsters the way MS Dhoni did. I played a lot of cricket under MS Dhoni. Sourav Ganguly supported his team a lot. Then MS Dhoni came and led from the front. Rohit is going in the right direction. He is a brilliant captain," opined Raina.

He further stated, "I want to give credit to Rohit Sharma. He first gave Sarfaraz the chance and then made Jurel part of the team."

Raina added, "Rohit has been amazing with his planning. He has been giving a lot of chances to the youngsters. The way he is rotating the players is something I have never seen in the last couple of years. Whenever the fast bowlers came in the last couple of years, we have seen injuries. But Rohit has been managing that really well. Being a captain is not easy, especially when you are playing in India. Earlier, we used to have one fast bowler and 3-4 spinners. Now, he is bringing two fast bowlers. He brought in Siraj and Bumrah. He sent Bumrah back and managed his workload well and then handed debut to Akash Deep. India's series triumph over England came on the back of several top performances from young players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal (with over 600 runs in the ongoing series), Shubman Gill (having scores of 104, 91, 52*), Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (Player-of-the-Match in Ranchi for his keeping skills along with a priceless 90 and 39*), Akash Deep, etc.

The likes of Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja have also stepped up but the series win has come courtesy of the younger brigade. Meanwhile, Rohit has also led brilliantly despite missing key players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

‘He is the next MS Dhoni’ - Suresh Raina lauds Rohit Sharma after India’s Test series win over England

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly feels the right choice has been made with Rohit Sharma to lead India in the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 edition&nbsp;in West Indies and USA. The upcoming ICC event kicks off in early June with India placed in Group A with Ireland, USA, Canada and arch-rivals Pakistan. India will start their campaign on June 5, versus Ireland.

Speaking to Mid Day, Ganguly -- who also served as the BCCI chief -- said, "Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice."

Ahead of the recently-concluded Rajkot Test between India and England, in the ongoing five-match series, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that Rohit will lead the national side in the next edition of the T20 WC. There were speculations of Hardik Pandya to lead India in the mega event with Rohit, as well as Virat Kohli, being away from India's T20I setup for 14 months since the 2022 T20 WC semifinal defeat (to eventual winners England). However, Rohit returned to the shortest format early this year during India's T20I series win over Afghanistan. With him, Kohli also made a T20I comeback.&nbsp;

Moreover, Hardik -- who has replaced Rohit as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain ahead of IPL 2024 -- is recovering from an ankle injury, which he suffered during India's ODI WC campaign last year. He will serve as Rohit's deputy in the T20 WC if deemed fully fit by then.

Chasing 245, India were in trouble at 32/4 before Player of the Match and skipper Uday Saharan (81) and Sachin Das (96) added 171 runs for the fifth wicket to help India achieve the target. With the win, India reached their record-extending fifth consecutive U-19 World Cup final.

Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir post heartfelt praise for India U-19 after thrilling win in WC semi-final vs SA

The Jasprit Bumrah effect is for real.&nbsp;While the Indian seamer was rocking the touring England side with his out-of-the-world spell on day two of the ongoing Vizag Test, former India captain Sourav Ganguly urged the BCCI to back the bowlers to pick 20 wickets in all conditions, thus asking the board to prepare good wickets and not turning tracks at home for the future Test series.

Taking to microblogging site&nbsp;X (formerly known as Twitter),&nbsp;Ganguly said&nbsp;that with each passing day, his conviction of watching teams playing on good wickets is getting stronger. He argued that with the seam attack like Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and newcomer Mukesh Kumar, and alongside the dangerous spin trio of Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar, this Indian bowling attack can pick 20 wickets on any track anywhere.

Such comments have come after Bumrah’s deadly spell against England on day two in Vizag. The ace India seamer bagged six wickets, including that of Joe Root, who was caught in the slips, and Captain Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope.

Besides Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav returned with three wickets in the first innings, and Axar picked just one. While Ravindra Jadeja is missing this Test due to an injury, seasoned campaigner Ravi Ashwin went wicketless in his 12-over spell.

<h2>Spinners dominate at home</h2>

In the last decade, Ravi Ashwin has picked more than 340 Test wickets at home, while Jadeja is second on the list with 199 wickets. Axar Patel - despite making his Test debut in 2021, is seventh on the list with 46 wickets from 12 games, while Kuldeep Yadav has picked around 20 wickets in five matches at home.&nbsp;

Such figures are enough to tell anyone&nbsp;what works well in this part of the world.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;since the time Indian pacers helped the touring side win the maiden Test series Down Under about 7 years back,&nbsp;the Indian pace attack has started to emerge as a strong force.

Meanwhile, as things stand, India leads by 171 after day two of play in Vizag.&nbsp;

While Ravindra Jadeja is missing this Test due to an injury, seasoned campaigner Ravi Ashwin went wicketless in his 12-over spell. Spinners dominate at home In the last decade, Ravi Ashwin has picked more than 340 Test wickets at home, while Jadeja is second on the list with 199 wickets. Axar Patel - despite making his Test debut in 2021, is seventh on the list with 46 wickets from 12 games, while Kuldeep Yadav has picked around 20 wickets in five matches at home. Such figures are enough to tell anyone what works well in this part of the world. However, since the time Indian pacers helped the touring side win the maiden Test series Down Under about 7 years back, the Indian pace attack has started to emerge as a strong force. Meanwhile, as things stand, India leads by 171 after day two of play in Vizag.

Ganguly urges BCCI to prepare ‘good wickets’ for home Tests, backs seamers to do well in all conditions

England will look at the re-launch of the Bazball in the ongoing Hyderabad Test against India as they look to extend their lead on Day 4. Steered by the excellent Ollie Pope's unbeaten 148, England’s Bazball approach could come to haunt India having established a 126-run lead in the Hyderabad Test. However, former India captain Sourav Ganguly reckons England’s fast-attacking batting style termed Bazball won’t work in India as the tracks are friendlier to the spin.

<h2>Ganguly comments on Bazball </h2>

"Bazball is an approach where the match is played in a fast manner. India have spinning wickets and so, Bazball will not be applicable here,” Ganguly said while speaking to India Today.

"India will win the series, the matter is whether they will win it 4-0 or 5-0. Every Test will be decisive. England could have won this Test match had they batted well. One cannot win against India by making 230 or 240 runs on Indian soil. Had they made 350 or 400, they could have beaten India, but they weren't able to do that. It's a tough series for England. Any team other than the Australia of that era could not create any impact here,” the former BCCI president added.

England were 163/5 at one stage and looked on the verge of another collapse with the bat. However, Ollie Pope’s unbeaten 148 coupled with resolute knocks from Ben Duckett (47) and Ben Foakes (34) helped England take the lead. One key factor during the innings was the reverse sweep which yielded them valuable runs. Overall, England made 79 runs off 46 balls using various kinds of sweeps. This helped England end the day at 316/6 and lead by 126 runs with four wickets in hand.

With the game firmly in balance now, Ben Stokes’ men will look to establish a lead of around 200-250 runs which will be a challenging total. They still have four wickets in hand and have found the formula&nbsp;to tackle the Indian bowling. With six sessions still to be played in Hyderabad and no signs of bad weather, the opening Test match is guaranteed a result.

IND vs ENG Test Series: Bazball will not be applicable here - Sourav Ganguly on England’s approach

Sourav Ganguly recalled Virat Kohli's infamous resignation as India captain in late 2021. Kohli announced his resignation as the T20I captain before the start of the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Soon after the World Cup, he was sacked as the ODI captain and after the end of the India-South Africa Tests, which concluded in early 2022 in&nbsp;the African nation, Kohli stepped down as the Test captain as well, bringing curtains to his captaincy tenure. Back then, Ganguly was also criticised by many for playing a role in Kohli's resignation as he was serving as the BCCI chief.&nbsp;

Now, Ganguly has recalled the entire controversy and stated that he didn't play any role in Kohli leaving captaincy altogether. The former Indian captain said that he just asked Kohli to step down as the white-ball skipper after the latter had announced his resignation from T20Is.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I didn't remove Virat from captaincy. I have told this a lot of times. He was not interested to lead in T20Is. So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you're not interested to lead in T20Is, it's better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain," Ganguly said on Dadagiri Unlimited Season 10, a reality show.

In addition, Ganguly revealed he had to push Rohit Sharma to take over as the all-format captain after Kohli's resignation in January 2022. "I pushed Rohit Sharma a bit to take up the captaincy role because he wasn't interested to lead in all three formats of the game. So, maybe I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating, it's the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed as the President of BCCI to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part of it," he added.

Back then, Kohli wanted to carry on as the ODI and Test captain despite stepping down as the T20I skipper in September 2021. However, the board eventually sacked him as the ODI captain before he moved aside from the additional responsibility in the red-ball format. At present, Kohli is gearing up for India's two-match Test series versus South Africa, starting on Dec 26.

'Didn't remove Virat Kohli from captaincy': Former skipper and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly recalls controversy

Former India captain and BCCI boss Sourav Ganguly has backed leader Rohit Sharma to continue captaining India across formats till the 2024 T20 World Cup. While the Indian board was contemplating taking a call on Rohit's white-ball future as a skipper post the World Cup final, the latest reports suggest the BCCI plans to back the veteran batter to continue leading till next year's 20-team tournament, to be hosted by West Indies and the USA in June.&nbsp;

Ganguly believes Rohit is the right man to lead India in another World Cup, having fared exceptionally well in the marquee events earlier.

“Rohit Sharma should be the captain of India because he's done so well in the World Cup. He's a leader. So I expect, and I presume, that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup," Ganguly was quoted as saying to the reporters.
