India continued their dominance in the opening Test versus West Indies, in Dominica, during Day Two on Thursday (July 13). Resuming the day at 80 for no loss, after the Windies were bundled out for 150, Indian openers Rohit Sharma (103) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (143 not out) put India on top with their 229-run stand before they went to stumps at 312 for 2, leading by 162 runs. Besides Jaiswal -- who became the 17th Indian to score a century on Test debut -- Shubman Gill also made heads turn. He had his first stint at the No. 3 spot, but fell cheaply.

Prior to the Test series opener, captain Rohit revealed that Gill had asked the team management to use him at No. 3, instead of playing as an opener. However, the right-hander failed to get going and departed for six. After the day's play, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra opined on Gill and feels he will have to tweak his batting technique at his new batting slot.

Speaking on his YouTube channel after Day 2, Chopra said, "Shubman Gill came at No. 3. It is difficult and he will realise that. He has played the majority of his innings in first-class cricket as an opener. He came at No. 3 here after a huge partnership. He plays with slightly hard hands. So his method of defending with hard hands, he will have to change it slightly as he plays more in Test matches."

Meanwhile, Chopra also opined on Virat Kohli's unbeaten knock. Kohli came out to bat after Rohit's dismissal and stitched an unbroken 72-run third-wicket stand with centurion Jaiswal before second day's play ended. The former Indian captain is batting on 36 and will be eager to break his five-year-long overseas century drought in the purest format of the game.

Talking about Gill, he will be gutted to miss out on scoring big in the first innings. However, he will look to make amends in his next outing.

WI vs IND: 'He will have to...' - Former Indian opener opines on India's new No. 3 Shubman Gill's technique

Rohit Sharma-led India kicked off their tour of West Indies on Wednesday (July 12) on Day One of the first Test. The day's play was headlined by R Ashwin's five-wicket haul, 5 for 60, as the Windies were bundled out for 150 -- opting to bat first -- before Rohit (30 not out) and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (unbeaten 40) took India to 80 for no loss.

Ahead of the two-match Test series opener, Rohit addressed the pre-match presser and revealed India's batting order. He confirmed that Shubman Gill -- who has been opening for India across formats -- will be batting at No. 3, a request he himself came up with prior to the Dominica Test.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opened up on Gill's request and admitted 'neither does anyone make that request, nor anyone is given that luxury' but feels the move might work for Team India.

'You don't see a player telling team management that he likes to...'

Chopra said on his official YouTube channel, "Shubman Gill told team management that he wanted to play at no.3. It's a very interesting thing, because you don't usually hear such things happening in Indian cricket. You don't see a player telling team management that he likes to bat in a particular position. Neither does anyone make that request, nor anyone is given that luxury. But the good thing is Yashasvi Jaiswal can now open."

He opined, "But in Test cricket, if there's one difficult job, it's that of opener. Especially away from home. No. 3 is still a challenging spot, but no. 4 is the most settled spot and you usually keep your best batter in that spot. You don't want him to bat with the tail.

“Shubman at no.3, I'm not surprised. I tweeted in 2020 that he would play long for India but in few years time, you would see him batting in the middle. Now, he has himself expressed that wish,” Chopra added.

'Neither does anyone make such demand, nor...': Ex-India opener on Shubman Gill asking to bat at No. 3

India skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed the Indian team set-up for the first Test against West Indies in Dominica as his side kicks off the two-match series on Wednesday, July 12 evening. Surprisingly, India have shown faith in Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, with the former batting at No. 3 while the latter will be handed his first cap for the national team. This will be Rohit Sharma’s first Test series as captain on away territory with his only other Test on foreign territory coming in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June.

Gill to bat at No.3

"Shubman Gill will play at No. 3 because he wants to play at three," Rohit said in a pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Gill, who has been in superb form in 2023, will play at the one-down position after Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped for the tour. The young star has been in relentless form since the turn of the year and has scored eight hundreds in the calendar year, including three in the Indian Premier League. He has played in the position before for Punjab in the domestic circuit and is not new to the position.

"He told [coach] Rahul [Dravid] bhai that he has played all of his cricket at No. 3 and No. 4 and that he can do better for the team at No. 3. It helps us too as it creates a left-right opening combination. This is what we are trying and hopefully, this becomes a long-term thing as we have been desperate for a left-hander. We have got that left-hander in Jaiswal and let's hope that he performs well for the team and he can really make that spot his own,” Rohit added.

Jaiswal to make debut

In big team news, Yashasvi Jaiswal will be handed a debut as Indian team management focuses on the left-hand batters issue. The team currently has no full-time recognised left-hand batter in the team with them heavily relying on the services of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel in the Test set-up. Jaiswal will become the 306th player to represent India in the Test format and joins greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and others from the town of Mumbai to represent the national side.

IND vs WI 1st Test: Shubman Gill will play at No. 3 - Rohit Sharma reveals India's batting set-up

India are set to kick off their campaign in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle on Wednesday (July 12) when they take on hosts West Indies in the two-match series opener in Dominica. After a loss in the WTC final last month, India have inducted some young players in the line-up, with the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, etc making it to the squad. While many were happy with India's Test squad for the Windies tour, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar wasn't impressed.

Gavaskar feels India should have added more youngsters in the mix and could have given rest to their main players against the eighth-ranked West Indies line-up. Thus, ahead of the series opener, the Little Master has taken an indirect dig at 'main guys' captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and the likes. The Indian legend feels the Windies series was an ideal time for India to test its bench strength but since they have persisted with their regulars, they won't gain anything significant and it will also hamper their transition process.

'The truth is the main guys do not want to go early'

Gavaskar, who turned 74 on Monday (July 10), told the Indian Express, "What kind of preparation are we talking about? Now they have gone to the West Indies. You have the example of the World Test Championship before you. Are you playing any matches? So what is this talk about 20-25 days? When you talk about preparation, be genuine about it. Go 15 days before, play two warm-up matches. The main guys can rest, but the fringe players might be actually challenging those who are not doing well. He does not get an opportunity to show that he is good enough."

You call yourself the fittest team in the world or fitter than the early generations then how do you break down so soon? How do you have a workload issue when you play a 20-over game?"

India's tour of West Indies comprises two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. Rohit and Kohli will be part of the ODI squad as well but the duo will continue to remain out of the T20I squad for the Windies tour as well.

On Friday (June 23), the BCCI selection committee named India's squads for their two-match Test series and three ODIs versus West Indies as the tour commences next month in the Caribbean. Rohit Sharma retained captaincy of the 16-man Test squad, despite criticism after India's WTC final loss, whereas Ajinkya Rahane regained the vice-captaincy post.

Rahane served as Virat Kohli's deputy in whites for a long time and even led the team with aplomb in his absence before losing the post in late 2021. Soon, he even lost his spot before making his comeback during the WTC finale versus Australia early this month, where he returned with a sublime 89 and 46. With injuries to Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, Rahane once again got the vice-captaincy back and Little Master Sunil Gavaskar reacted to the same.

Gavaskar said there is 'nothing wrong' in Rahane regaining vice-captaincy but feels there was an opportunity lost to name a youngster as Rohit's deputy for the Windies tour. Talking to Sports Today, he said, "There is nothing wrong in having him [Ajinkya Rahane] as the vice-captain, but a missed opportunity to groom a young player. At least, tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain. So, he starts to think as a future leader."

Gavaskar opines on Rahane regaining vice-captaincy, suggests three names as India's next Test skipper

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli share a great bond both on and off the field. The duo were even spotted watching the FA Cup final together ahead of the World Test Championship final. For Gill, Virat Kohli is one person that he looks up to. The India opener has never shied away from expressing his admiration for ‘King Kohli’. Back in 2019, before the Test series against South Africa, Gill had even revealed that he tries to follow the work ethic of Virat Kohli.

“I have my role models. I try to follow the work ethics of Virat bhaiya but I know every player is different and you can’t copy anyone,” Gill had told The Times of India.

The Punjab-born was five innings quicker than Kohli in setting the incredible record.

In international cricket, Shubman Gill played seven games under the leadership of Virat Kohli. Under Kohli’s captaincy, the opener scored 279 runs at an average of 25.36. He has had one half century during Kohli’s stint as the Indian captain.

Gill could only score 31 runs across two innings in that game.

After exhibiting a brilliant performance in the latest edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shubman Gill took part in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at the Kennington Oval in London. But Gill failed to carry forward his sensational form in the WTC summit clash. The 23-year-old could only manage to score 31 runs in the game against Australia. Team India had to suffer a 209-run defeat at the hands of the Pat Cummins-led side. Apart from his poor performance on the field, Gill had to pay a hefty fine for his controversial behaviour. Gill was fined 15 percent of his match for expressing his displeasure after being dismissed in the second innings.

Manchester City, on the other hand, claimed their maiden Champions League title after defeating Inter Milan in the final by one goal to nil. Spanish midfielder Rodri scored the solitary goal of the fixture to guide the English side to a special Champions League triumph. Pep Guardiola’s men became just the second English team, after Manchester United, to complete a continental treble.

Everyday your team gets changed).” Showering immense praise on Shubman Gill, a user commented, “Mbappe of world cricket.” After exhibiting a brilliant performance in the latest edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shubman Gill took part in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at the Kennington Oval in London.

WTC Final: ICC fines players for slow over rate, India's star batsman fined extra

India endured a forgettable batting performance on Sunday, getting bowled out for 234 while chasing 444 against Australia in the World Test Championship final. Despite starting the day with seven wickets in hand and requiring 280 runs, India’s batting was blown away before the first session could be completed.

Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland stood out among the bowlers, taking four and three wickets respectively. Australia has now become the only team to clinch four ICC titles. India missed another chance to secure their first ICC trophy since 2013.

Shubman Gill’s post

After the match, opening batsman Shubman Gill expressed his feelings on Twitter. He shared a picture of Team India and wrote, "Not finished."

In a controversial incident on Day 4, Gill was caught in the slips by Cameron Green off Scott Boland's delivery. However, replays indicated that the ball touched the ground when the fielder made contact. Despite the uncertainty, the third umpire ruled Gill out, causing significant debate and criticism from figures like Virender Sehwag, Ravi Shastri, and fans.

This loss in the World Test Championship final marked India's second consecutive defeat in the event, following their previous loss to New Zealand in the inaugural edition in 2021.

Scott Boland played a pivotal role in triggering a dramatic collapse as Australia secured a resounding 209-run victory over India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval. 'Shubman Gill has always been...': India coach Rahul Dravid lauds young batter ahead of WTC Final vs Australia

Former India head coach Gary Kirsten has made a bold statement on star India batter Shubman Gill’s career as comparisons are high for him with legendary batters Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Gill, currently in England for the World Test Championship (WTC) has scored eight hundreds in the calendar year with five of those coming for the national side. According to Kirsten, his comparisons with Sachin and Virat is unfair, and thinks there is a long way to go for him.

Comparison with Sachin and Virat unfair

“He is a young player who has incredible skill and determination to be one of the best players in the world. It would be unfair to compare him to Sachin and Virat so early in his journey,” Kirsten spoke in an exclusive chat with Cricbuzz.

The former World Cup-winning coach also praised Gill for his style of play and believes he has all the tools to be successful in all formats of the game. He added that he has the adaptability to play in the T20 and Test format.

“I believe he has the game to successfully play across all three formats for India. You don't often see that, these days, particularly as T20 cricket is developing and progressing so fast.

“First, his confidence and self-belief in knowing what he is capable of. Second is his work ethic and professionalism around how he prepares for the games. And finally, his game sense and how he puts a performance together with his skill sets.”

Gary Kirsten makes BOLD statement on Shubman Gill's career, says 'unfair to compare him to Sachin and Virat'

Former Australia cricketer Greg Chappell is of opinion that if Kangaroo bowlers bowled good areas in World Test Championship (WTC) Final then they can surely trouble India opener Shubman Gill. The WTC Final is scheduled to be played from June 7 at The Oval in England.

Gill, who had a breakout Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season with 890 runs in 16 games is expected to open the innings alongside skipper Rohit Sharma. This is India's second consecutive appearance in the WTC Final in as many editions while Australia are in their maiden one.

"I don't wanna go into too much detail but I'm sure the Australians must have seen a couple of things that I have seen. There are little things that Shubman does a few things early in his innings that make him vulnerable to that length around off stump and if the ball bounces a little bit extra, he will susceptible to nicking off behind the wicket. But he's a very good player. If they don't bowl, he will punish them," Chappell said on Backstage with Boria.

The former India coach picked Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to get the best out of English conditions and trouble the star India batter.

"Gill has been to England before. He will struggle like anyone in English conditions if the Australians bowl well. The bowlers who will trouble him most are the ones who get that extra pace like Mitchell Starc. That can worry anyone. The extra pace gets good players out. The extra bit of bounce also gets good players out and I think if Hazlewood is fit to play then he can be a problem for Shubman. If Hazlewood doesn't play then Boland will most likely play and he's another bowler who can trouble anyone. He bowls a good line. He knows what a good length can be in English conditions," added Chappell.

Chappell, however, acknowledged Gill's batting prowess and credited the domestic system for proper development of the players.

"I've seen a little bit of Shubman Gill. I've watched him live in Australia and of course on television. He looks a good player. The one thing that India have done well than other teams in the world is with developing their players. They have played a lot of cricket. They have sent them overseas. Rahul Dravid has overseen stuff from the NCA. That has prepared them well for international cricket. Gill has played international cricket, has scored runs, He has played a lot of first-class cricket. So for a 22-year-old, he is an experienced cricketer," he said.

“He looks like a terrific young guy. He's got that bit of attitude about him as well. He's got a bit of swagger. He has some serious class. That sort of front foot pull shot that he plays against the fast bowlers will be a shot that he'll probably need against this Australian attack,” said Ponting.

India are set to face Australia in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final and will expect Shubman Gill to play a dominant role. Gill has so far scored eight hundreds in the calendar year with five of those for the national side. Most recently he scored 128 runs against Australia in the Ahmedabad Test when India won the series 2-1.

Ponting also spoke on the pace sensation Mohammed Shami after his exploits for GT in the IPL. Shami won the Purple Cap in the IPL 2023 with 28 wickets and will be another key member of the squad.

“I think he has to step up or try and take his game to another level if India are going to win this game. When you talk to the Australian batters as well, they understand how good Shami is whether it's a new ball or an old ball, whether it's in Australia or India. They know the skillset he's got and how dangerous he can be. It’s going to have to be him,” Ponting added.

WTC Final: Ricky Ponting lauds Shubman Gill ahead of showpiece clash, says 'he has some serious class'

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition got over in the early hours of Tuesday (May 30) with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edging past defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in an emphatic run-chase of 171, in 15 overs, after rain halted proceedings at the start of the second innings. Earlier, MS Dhoni won the toss and CSK invited GT to bat first. Gujarat rode on Shubman Gill's 20-ball 39, Wriddhiman Saha's 39-ball 54 and Sai Sudharsan's 47-ball 96 to post 214/4 before the Yellow Army got a revised target thanks to the rain break.

CSK rode on quickfire knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and unbeaten innings from Shivam Dube (21-ball 32*) and Ravindra Jadeja (6-ball 15 not out) to chase down the score on the last ball as GT were prevented from lifting their second title on the trot in as many seasons. Despite them finishing second, Gujarat had plenty of positives. Gill ended with 890 runs in 17 matches, including three tons and four fifties, to win the Orange Cap. Recently, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra lauded Gill and compared his season with Virat Kohli's unreal run in IPL 2016.

In IPL 2016, the then-Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Kohli scored 973 runs with four centuries and seven fifties at an average of 81.08. His tally remains the most runs scored by any batter in an IPL. However, Gill came close to Kohli's tally (second-most in a season) -- still falling short by 83 runs -- and Chopra lauded the youngster.

'This was a proper king-type season, similar to Virat Kohli's 2016 run'

"Gill is absolutely thrilling. The last season was good but this was a wow season. He used to be called prince earlier, but he is no longer a prince, this was a proper king-type season. The domination we saw from Virat Kohli in 2016, this was that kind of a season," said Chopra on his Youtube channel.

"He just kept growing. In fact, that innings against Mumbai (129 off 60 balls in Qualifier 2), it was like a man possessed, that he cannot do anything wrong now. He was telling people where to bowl. The Narendra Modi Stadium is a huge stadium and the guy hit sixes there," Chopra added.

Gill has now shifted his focus to India's upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they take on Australia on June 07 at The Oval, London. He will hope to replicate his fine form in the marquee clash. In 2023, the 23-year-old has already scored a double ton in ODIs, a century in Tests and T20Is along with three in IPL 2023.

IPL 2023: Shubman Gill wins Orange Cap with 890 runs, Md Shami clinches Purple Cap with 28 wickets

Gujarat Titans opening batsman Shubman Gill had a brilliant season in Indian Premier League (IPL) as he scored 890 runs in 16 matches he played in 2023 at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. His performance was 160-run best than Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis, who was a distant second in the season with 730 runs in 14 matches.

Even if Faf (14) had played as many matches as Gill (16) played, he wouldn't have surpassed the GT opener. The reasoning behind this is - Faf averaged 56 in the season and had he played two more matches to equal Gill's tally, he would have ended up with 842 runs or 850 - 40 less than what Gill scored this season.

The GT batter crossed 50 seven times in 2023 and converted three of them into hundreds. He also crossed Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler's record of 863 runs which the Englishman had set in the 2022 season. One might say that Gill got such numbers as he opens the batting, thus getting the best chance to play as many overs as possible from the available 20. And this is true and it isn't unfair or anything but just how the games work that openers get the best chance to score runs.

Now let's talk about Virat Kohli.

The RCB batter has been in the IPL since its inception in 2008. He has scored the most runs, most fifties and most hundreds in a season, apart from a plethora of other records. And his best season came in 2016 when he eclipsed everyone like the Sun and no player since 2016 has been able to come out of the shadow cast by him that season.

Kohli played 16 matches that season and scored 973 runs at an average of 81 and a strike rate of 152. Kohli went past fifty in 11 matches and converted four of them into a century - the most in a single IPL season. His team, however, couldn't win the trophy and the wait still continues. In fact, only twice has been the Orange Cap holder from the title-winning team - in 2014 when Robin Uthappa scored the most runs for eventual winner KKR and in 2021 when Ruturaj Gaikwad did the same for Chennai Super Kings.

The Kohli of 2016 was the best IPL has seen ever and Shubman Gill's monster season just reiterated the fact again.

IPL 2023: Shubman Gill's breakout season with GT shows how good Virat Kohli was in 2016

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore player AB de Villiers has picked Rajasthan Royals batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal as his favorite player of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

Speaking on Jio Cinema, de Villiers said, "Yashasvi Jaiswal for me and by a long margin for sure. He is a young player and has got all the shots in the book. He has a calm and composed temperament at the wicket and I love what he does, dominating the bowlers and always looks like he is in control."

On the question of why not Shubman Gill - who is having a breakout season with Gujarat Titans, having scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of around 60 and a strike rate of 156, ABD said, "Shubman is a little bit older, I think Jaiswal's got a long way to go, and he has all the credentials to become a great."

Dhoni's imminent retirement. Would MSD replace Fleming after this season?

Notably, Jaiswal, after making his debut in 2020 with Rajasthan Royals, Jaiswal has come of age in 2023, having scored 625 runs in 14 matches at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 163. The southpaw has also scored one century and five fifties as well. Such has been his dominance that last year's Orange Cap holder and Royals' other opener Jos Buttler's failures have been entirely shadowed by Jaiswal.

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, is batting on an entirely different planet this season. Gill Gill is having a breakout year with the GT, having scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.79 and a strike rate of 156. The swashbuckling batsman has also hit four fifties to go with his three hundreds and has a high score of 129.

Jaiswal, however, has become mature in his approach season by season and in the current one, he has ensured that once there's a start, he doesn't let it go and turns it into a big innings.

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore player AB de Villiers has picked Rajasthan Royals batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal as his favorite player of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

He has a calm and composed temperament at the wicket and I love what he does, dominating the bowlers and always looks like he is in control." On the question of why not Shubman Gill - who is having a breakout season with Gujarat Titans, having scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of around 60 and a strike rate of 156, ABD said, "Shubman is a little bit older, I think Jaiswal's got a long way to go, and he has all the credentials to become a great." Also Read: IPL 2023: CSK coach's cryptic tweet. IPL 2023: AB de Villiers picks THIS young star as his favorite player in league over Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma

Shubman Gill is the Player of the Season with what he has produced with the bat in hand. After Kolkata Knight Riders released him following IPL 2021, Gujarat Titans handpicked him, and since then, he has turned heads around for good. The young right-hander, who helped his team win the IPL 2022, has again put them in the same position – but this time with heaps of runs and several records on his back.

In this season alone, Gill has crossed 800 runs (currently at 851 runs with the final to go), at an average of 60.79 in this format. He is also the Orange Cap holder, and in his previous four innings, had notched three centuries – one of which came against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, scoring 129 from 60 balls – his best IPL score and highest individual total recorded in IPL Playoffs.

Sachin Tendulkar terms as 'unforgettable' IPL 2023 season of Shubman Gill, who led GT to back-to-back finals

Gujarat Titans batsman Shubman Gill has taken Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 by storm as he scored three centuries to take his team into the second consecutive final. Gill, who had made his debut in IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018, joined Gujarat Titans for its debut season in 2022 after being released by KKR.

Former CSK and New Zealand player Scott Styris, meanwhile, has said that the decision to let go Gill was the biggest blunder an IPL franchise has ever made.

"I still believe that his release from KKR will go down as the biggest blunder a franchise has made. The only other one was KL Rahul from RCB. However, there is age advantage here. Gill is still a very young man, he has got a lot of growth in his game. He can not only be the star for this GT star, especially after the next World Cup, he will be the backbone of this Indian side. And I think he will embrace that," said Styris on Jio Cinema.

The former all-rounder also said that that Gill has shown overall improvement and looks like Virat Kohli of early days.

"We have seen the evolution of Baby GOAT, from his KKR days to now in GT. He was getting starts, and out of nowhere, he would get out. But he is converting those. He has made the adjustments to his game. He has taken the responsibility, he is happy to be the mainstay of this batting line-up. And he is looking like Virat Kohli back in the day as well, in the sense that he is in total control of his game. He is not having to thrash the ball or go after the bowling. He just hits the bad ball," the former CSK star added.

Notably, Gill is having a breakout year with the GT, having scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.79 and a strike rate of 156. The swashbuckling batsman has also hit four fifties to go with his three hundreds and has a high score of 129.

Following the match that saw Gujarat beat Mumbai by 62 runs to seal the IPL 2023 Final berth, Gill admitted those three sixes off Akash Madhwal’s over changed the momentum for him and his team.

"[Six-hitting] is not a conscious decision. Obviously, you keep practising, you want to keep growing, want to keep evolving as a batsman," Gill said. "But I feel the belief is more important, and that's what I have had this year and the last year as well."

"Last year, from the West Indies tour, that's when I shifted gears. I got injured in 2021 leading up to the IPL, and I was out for a couple of months. IPL 2023: Superstar Shubman Gill reveals the moment THAT changed the game for Gujarat against Mumbai

Gujarat Titans have cruised to their second successive IPL final, and this time, all credit goes to star opener Shubman Gill, who notched up his third hundred of the season. In the rain-hit Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023, Shubman scored a brilliant 129 off 60 balls – an innings GT captain Hardik Pandya calls the best he has ever seen in this format.

Hardik showered praises on the franchise's future superstar, saying the clarity with which Gill has batted this season, he deserves to touch the skies. The right-handed opener surpassed RCB captain Faf du Plessis for the Orange Cap already, as he has amassed 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.79 and a strike rate of 156.43.

Following the match, Hardik said, "The clarity this year he has. The confidence that he is carrying is amazing. The innings which I saw today was one of the finest innings I have seen in a T20 game."

After being asked to bat first, Gujarat got off to a flyer, with Gill chipping in with fours early on. However, after he got dropped on 30 by Tim David, Gill switched gears and went bonkers, slamming every bowler for boundaries. His third ton (129) in four innings, which also happens to be the highest individual score in IPL playoffs, helped GT put up a mammoth 233 for three in 20 overs.

The man in sublime touch had made batting look utterly easy - something Pandya also agrees to.

"At no point in time, he looked rushed, at no point he looked like he was not in control. It looked as if someone was throwing down the balls and he was just hitting. He is a superstar and is going to do big things to franchise cricket and Indian cricket," Hardik added.

Gujarat set up a summit clash with CSK

234 was never going to be easy to chase, given the stage, the pressure, and what was at stake. Mumbai, unlikely how they had batted in the lead-up to this game, looked under pressure and lost early wickets. While Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green suffered injuries, with Ishan getting ruled out due to concussion, MI had little to rely on during the chase.

However, their star performer Suryakumar Yadav and emerging left-hander Tilak Varma did play counter-attacking innings, this mountain score proved too much for the former champions, as eventually they crumbled under pressure and fell shy of the target by 62 runs.

Mohit Sharma picked up five wickets for ten runs, while Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami returned with two wickets each.

IPL 2023: 'One of the finest T20 innings I have seen,' GT captain Hardik Pandya lauds superman Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill's glorious run at the highest level continues. Ever since he slammed his maiden international hundred, in August 2022, he has been unstoppable. Gill came into the IPL 2023 edition on the back of twin tons in Tests, a double hundred in ODIs, maiden T20I century and scored his first-ever IPL century in Gujarat Titans' (GT) 34-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 62 on Monday (May 15).

Gill occupies the second spot in the list of batters with most runs in IPL 2023 -- with 576 runs in 13 games at an average of 48 and strike rate close to 150 (146.19) with four fifties and a ton. The right-hander is displaying his class and has certainly grown in stature in recent times. Thus, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim on Gill.

'As big as Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar'

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Uthappa -- IPL winner with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) -- said, “I definitely see him having the potential of becoming someone as big as Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar. I certainly think he has got the stuff. He is a phenomenal player who is in exceptional form and is playing some exceptional cricket at the moment."

“I feel and believe personally that Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two next big things of Indian cricket,” Uthappa further opined.

Apart from Gill, Rajasthan Royals' (RR) opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also lit up the atmosphere in IPL 2023. He has amassed 575 runs in 13 games -- striking at 166.18 -- including a ton and four half-centuries.
