Shubman Gill has been announced as the new captain of the one-time winners Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the IPL mini-auction for the 2024 edition, on Monday (Nov 27). After Hardik Pandya was traded to the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI), in a historic deal, Gill has been elevated as the captain of the Gujarat franchise. The 24-year-old will lead a side filled with experienced campaigners such as Rashid Khan - who was serving as Hardik's deputy since the franchise's admission in 2022 - David Miller, Mohammed Shami, Matthew Wade and the likes.

Vikram Solanki, Gujarat's director of cricket, said in a statement, "We've seen him mature not only as a batter but also as a leader in cricket," he added. "His contribution on the field has helped Gujarat Titans emerge as a formidable force...His maturity and skill are evident in his on-field performance and we are extremely excited to embark on a new journey with a young leader like Shubman at the helm."

On Hardik's switch to his previous franchise MI, Solanki said, "He has expressed a desire to return to his original team Mumbai Indians."

"We respect his decision and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours."

Gill has raised his stature while playing for the Gujarat franchise since their admission in IPL 2022. The right-hander has amassed 1,373 runs in two seasons for Gujarat, after joining them post his stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In 2023, the youngster ended with 890 runs -- most by any -- including three hundreds and four half-centuries. It will be interesting to see how Gill responds to the added responsibility in the upcoming season.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans appoint Shubman Gill new captain after Hardik Pandya trade

Rohit Sharma-led India were demolished by Pat Cummins' Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition's final on Sunday (Nov 19) in Ahmedabad. Being asked to bat first&nbsp;at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, India only managed 240 in 50 overs with skipper Rohit (40), Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) being the top-performers. The target was always&nbsp;below-par and Australia chased it down in 43 overs with six wickets in hand.

Despite reeling at 47 for 3 at one point, Australia came back resolutely and went past India comfortably due to Travis Head's 137 and Marnus Labuschagne's 58 not out. After the game, many Indian players were emotional as the fans were also left shattered. As the dust has settled down on the heavy defeat, many Indian cricketers have reacted to the lost opportunity and opener Shubman Gill also joined the bandwagon.

The 24-year-old Gill, who missed the first two games in CWC 2023 due to dengue, shared a heartfelt post&nbsp;on X, formerly Twitter. He wrote,&nbsp;"Been almost 16 hours but still hurts like it did last night. Sometimes giving your everything isn’t enough. Talking about Gill's campaign, the right-hander amassed&nbsp;354 runs in nine matches at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of&nbsp;106.94. He managed four fifties but fell cheaply in the summit clash, getting out for 4.

By the time the next ODI WC comes, in 2027 in South Africa, Gill is expected to be having more responsibilities on his shoulders and the star batter will hope to&nbsp;guide the team to the coveted title.

<h2>'We were not good enough today'</h2>

At the post-match presentation of the final, Indian captain&nbsp;Rohit opened up on the loss. He said, "The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn't supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets. When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Labuschagne who stitched together a big partnership and put us completely out of the game. We tried everything we could but I feel wicket got slightly better to bat under lights. Don't want to give that as an excuse."

This became Australia's sixth men's ODI WC triumph; most by any team. Meanwhile, India's wait for an ICC title continues with their last major success coming in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy, under MS Dhoni,&nbsp;in England and Wales.

Shubman Gill shares HEARTFELT post, vows for strong comeback after India lose World Cup to Australia

India batter Shubman Gill attributed the cramps he suffered while batting against New Zealand in first semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 to dengue he suffered at the start of the campaign. Gill had missed India's first two games of the ongoing tournament because of dengue.&nbsp;

"It started with cramps and then I pulled my hamstring a little bit," Gill said at the post-match press conference. "It was quite humid and just the after-effects of dengue."

"I have honestly not really adjusted anything in terms of my batting but because I have lost a bit of muscle mass, I think the reserve that I used to have before the dengue has decreased a little bit […] You do get cramps when you're playing in humid conditions, but for me [it] happens after a long period of time, not so soon," he further explained. "But because I think I've lost a bit of muscle mass; the reserve has gone down a bit."

Gill, who was batting at 79 off 65, had to be retired hurt in the 23rd over before coming back to bat in the final over post the fall of fourth wicket. The batter remained unbeaten on 80 off 66 and said he would have scored a 100 had he not been hit with the cramps.

"If I didn't get cramp, maybe I would have scored a hundred," Gill said. "But I think the total we were trying to reach, irrespective of whether I scored a hundred or not, we reached there. We had a hope of scoring around 400, we had expectations that by the 25th-30th over we should have scored these many runs, and we did that, so it didn't matter whether I made a century or not."

India, nonetheless, finished on 397/4 in 50 overs, thanks to Virat Kohli's record-breaking 50th ODI ton and Shreyas Iyer's second hundred on the trot. While defending, Mohammed Shami took 7/57 as India won the match by 70 runs to book a place in the final.

ODI World Cup 2023: India batter Shubman Gill reveals REASON behind cramps during semi-final vs New Zealand

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a perfect start in the ODI World Cup semifinal. The contest at Wankhede Stadium had seen India under pressure having had a poor history against New Zealand in recent times. However, unlike the&nbsp;2019 ODI World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Manchester when India were 5/3 at a point, Rohit’s men got off to a perfect start on Wednesday (Nov 15).

Other big gainers Gill rises to the top for the first time in his short but impressive career, while Kohli jumps three places to fourth - and within one rating point of third-placed South African Quinton de Kock - courtesy of his 543 runs at the World Cup. Meanwhile, Siraj improved two spots to take the first position. His teammates Kuldeep Yadav (up three places to fourth), Jasprit Bumrah (up three spots to eighth) and Mohammed Shami (up seven places to 10th) are all nestled within the top 10. India opener Shubman Gill becomes no.1 ODI batter, dethrones Pakistan's Babar Azam

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer deserve more plaudits for their performance against South Africa than Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. India beat the Proteas by a whopping 243-run margin over the weekend to secure a top-of-the-table finish ahead of the knockouts.&nbsp;

Batting first, India were off to a flyer, courtesy of Sharma and Gill as they plundered South African bowlers for 91 runs in the first 10 overs. However, soon after the powerplay, with the ball becoming old, batting became difficult on the Eden Gardens pitch, forcing no. 3 Kohli and Iyer to take a cautious approach, radically different from the openers.&nbsp;

"I believe Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli batted on a different planet. This was not the Wankhede or Delhi where the conditions are easy throughout the innings," Gambhir told host broadcaster Star Sports.&nbsp;

"Here it was easy at the start and became difficult in the middle and at the end. So I believe both should be praised more than Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian gameplan against the Proteas</h2>

The Kohli-Iyer duo gave full respect to spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabrez Shamsi, even if it meant not scoring as fluently as they would have liked.

"Spin was going to be the biggest challenge. The way the two of them batted against Keshav Maharaj, he might have conceded just 30 runs but the important thing was that he picked up just one wicket, and because of that South Africa had to get their fast bowlers back," said Gambhir.&nbsp;

After the spinners had their say in the game, the Indian batters cashed in on the pacers, especially Iyer, who took particular affinity for Marco Jansen. Meanwhile, Kohli carried his bat through and smashed his 49th ODI century, equalling the record set by Sachin Tendulkar, over a decade ago.&nbsp;

While Virat reached his milestone, batting remained difficult on the sluggish track. Although India recalibrated their plans to reach anywhere near 300, late cameos from Suryakumar Yadav (22 off 14) and Ravindra Jadeja (29 off 15) ensured that the team posted an above-par target of 327.&nbsp;

After the end of Indian innings, all eyes were on Jadeja as the pitch had enough in it to offer something to a bowler of his calibre. The left-arm orthodox spinner did not disappoint and walked away with a fifer (9-1-33-5) that dismantled the South African batting lineup.

World Cup 2023: Gautam Gambhir says this batting duo should be hailed more than Rohit and Gill

It required perhaps the ‘ball of the tournament’ thus far from South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj to dismiss India opener Shubman Gill in the ongoing high-octane World Cup clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. With India on top, having scored more than 90 despite losing captain Rohit Sharma, Keshav, in his first over, bowled a jaffa to stun the 60,000-plus crowd and clean bowled&nbsp;Gill.

The unplayable delivery ball, pitched on the middle-leg stump, turned square, removed the bails from the off stump.&nbsp;

Such was the surprising factor that India waited for the replays to confirm the ball did hit the wickets, and it was not Quinton de Kock’s gloved that removed the bails.

<h2>Proteas put brakes on India’s innings</h2>

Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first at his favourite venue. The Indian openers began blazingly, smashing seamers Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen to all parts of the ground. With the crowd right behind the Indian Team in this top-of-the-table clash, Rohit and Gill opened their arms, with the Indian captain taking the lead.

Making the most of the excellent start, Rohit smashed everyone left, right and centre, and as he got close to yet another fifty in this tournament, he got caught at mid-of off Kagiso Rabada on 40 off 24 balls.&nbsp;

Walked in next was the birthday boy and modern-day game’s greatest batter, Virat Kohli. Alongside Gill, who continued finding gaps, Kohli opened his arms, much to everyone’s cheers. With seamers bowling inside the first ten overs, India managed 91 for one.

<h3>Maharaj’s introduction broke the stand</h3>

Maharaj was introduced in the 11th over and he soon provided South Africa a big breakthrough&nbsp;as he clean bowled Gill on 23. That, however, came as a boost for South Africa, who, in the next ten overs, conceded just 33 runs, putting brakes on the accelerating Indian innings.

It required perhaps the ‘ball of the tournament’ thus far from South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj to dismiss India opener Shubman Gill in the ongoing high-octane World Cup clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.

World Cup - Did Keshav Maharaj bowl ‘ball of the tournament’ to clean bowl Shubman Gill? WATCH

Indian bowlers cannot put a foot wrong in this World Cup. In what's deemed as the best seam-bowling attack ever, the trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami tore into Sri Lanka’s line-up as India thrashed them by a massive 302 runs to seal the semis spot in this home edition. With this victory, India maintained their winning streak, standing tall in seven matches straight.

After being asked to bat first at the venue where India lifted the World Cup in 2011 against the same opposition, the home team lost captain Rohit Sharma bowled off a Jaffa by Dilshan Madushanka on four.

Both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli got dropped a couple of times as Sri Lankan bowlers seemed to execute their plans to perfection. However, dropping these two-star players meant Sri Lanka was up for the punishment.

The right-handed pair took the attack to the opposition, starting to find gaps at will. Gill and Kohli completed their respective fifties as India eyed a huge total in Mumbai. With Sri Lankan bowlers not ready to drop guard, the contest was turning out to be exciting with each passing over.

Madushanka returned to remove the settled pair (Gill on 92 and Kohli on 88). KL Rahul got out next on 21, while Suryakumar Yadav edged one to the keeper off 12.

Shreyas Iyer made the most of this chance, smacking fours and sixes to his fifty. Ravindra Jadeja contributed with some runs, as India crossed the 300-run mark soon after. While the left-armer picked his maiden five-for on a World Cup stage, India put a mammoth total of 357 for eight in 50 overs.

<h2>Bowlers remind batters of Asia Cup nightmare</h2>

Like how it panned out the last time (during the Asia Cup final), the Indian bowlers were on the top of Sri Lankan batters, with Bumrah and Siraj removing both openers on their respective first-ball ducks.

Siraj removed Sadeera Samarawickrama and captain Kusal Mendis to reduce Sri Lanka to 3/4 at one stage.

The bowling pair kept everyone on their toes with the deadliest spell at this venue, only for star bowler Shami to come and pick two wickets in his first over; such was the situation as Sri Lanka’s scorecard read 22 for seven inside 12 overs.

None of the top-order batters had answers to this trio, which has put every batting line-up on notice.

Shami picked his second five-wicket haul of this edition, third overall, to wrap Sri Lanka on mere 55, helping India win the match their biggest margin in World Cups – 302 runs.

Bowlers remind batters of Asia Cup nightmare Like how it panned out the last time (during the Asia Cup final), the Indian bowlers were on the top of Sri Lankan batters, with Bumrah and Siraj removing both openers on their respective first-ball ducks. Being asked to bat first, India lost captain Rohit Sharma (4) early but Gill and Virat Kohli (88) revived the innings with a mammoth 189-run second-wicket stand and posted 357 for 8, with Shreyas Iyer also chipping in with an attacking 82. Gill top-scored with a fine 92 and surpassed 1,400 runs in the ODI format in 2023.

IND vs SL: Indian opener Shubman Gill surpasses 1,400 ODI runs in 2023 during 92-run knock in Mumbai

The Indian Team landed in Lucknow for another marquee World Cup 2023 clash against England on Sunday. The Men in Blue began training with batters, mainly Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and even Suryakumar Yadav, rolling their arms over as backup options in Hardik Pandya’s absence, who is out of the England game with a niggle in his ankle.

Hardik hurt his ankle while trying to stop the ball in his follow-through during the Bangladesh game in Pune and has been out since. To maintain the balance, India had to alter their winning combination as they returned to their older template of seven batters and four bowlers. Suryakumar and Mohammed Shami returned to the XI for the New Zealand match, with Shardul going out.

Sitting comfortably on the top of the points table with five wins in as many matches, India next face England in Lucknow. Eyeing a spot in the semis, India must win this game, and for that, they need all bases covered. Although Shami’s inclusion brings variety and a wicket-taking option for Rohit, the skipper and management still want a backup in case one of the five bowlers has a bad day at work.

Looking for options within the playing XI, Virat, Gill, and Surya come across as backup bowlers, with all bowling in the nets, per the latest reports.&nbsp;

While Kohli is said to have bowled for a good fifteen minutes, and so did Gill, Suryakumar had an extended session, bowling fifteen minutes with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.&nbsp;

Notably, Virat completed the over in which Hardik got injured.&nbsp;

<h2>Pacers are still India’s go-to-option</h2>

The trio of Shami, Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah is the best unit in this World Cup, and Rohit will be relying on them to get the job done against England.&nbsp;

The returning Shami picked his first five-for against New Zealand in the previous game – his second in&nbsp;tournament history. Courtesy of his spell and Virat Kohli’s stunning 95, India ended Kiwi’s winning streak, beating them by four wickets.&nbsp;

Against England, who recently lost their fourth match of this World Cup versus Sri Lanka on Thursday, the Indian Team would like to avenge last edition’s loss. While the seamers are in top touch, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja will also hold the key to success.

World Cup: Kohli, Gill and Surya bowl in nets as India prepare backup options in Hardik Pandya’s absence

India’s Shubman Gill has been enjoying his ODI World Cup parade after yet another convincing start against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Sunday (Oct 22). However, he had to ride his luck against the Kiwis when he survived a close call at the non-striker's end. Fortunately for Gill, he was in the right place and avoided run out to help India build another 50-run stand for the opening wicket. India and New Zealand are playing in the ODI World Cup for just the second time in 20 years with revenge on the cards for the Men in Blue having lost in 2019.

<h2>What happened with Gill?</h2>

On the final ball of the fifth over, a straight drive from Rohit Sharma went towards bowler Trent Boult and appeared to have struck his hand before hitting the stump. With the ball hitting the stumps Gill appeared to have his bat outside the crease as New Zealand were convinced he was run out. The appeals saw a standing umpire call for a review as New Zealand looked to have drawn first blood.

However, much to the relief of Gill and Indian fans, the ball appeared to have taken no deflection of the hand. Later it was also confirmed from the replays that Gill was back in his crease in time to avoid any further controversy. India’s score at that time was 32/0 in five overs.

At the time of writing, India did lose Rohit Sharma for 46 off 40 with the scoreboard reading 75/1 after 12 overs.

<h2>What happened in the New Zealand innings?</h2>

Mohammed Shami, playing in his first match in the ODI World Cup proved a point as he was on the show with India restricting New Zealand to 273 in their 50 overs. Shami grabbed his opportunity with both hands and scalped Will Young (17) on the first ball of his spell. He also played an important role in breaking the Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) partnership getting the former out when they had stitched 159 runs for the third wicket.

Shami would return to haunt the Kiwis when he scalped Mitchell Santner (1) and Matt Henry (0) on back-to-back balls. He was on a hat-trick in the 48th over but could not get over the line to join the elite company. He would later dismiss the impressive Mitchell with Virat Kohli catching him in the deep and completing the five-for. It is the third time he has taken a five-for in ODI cricket and continues to impress in his third World Cup stint.

Backed by the impressive Ravindra and Mitchell, New Zealand set a 274-run target for India to chase, despite being 19/2 at one stage. The duo was instrumental for the Kiwis to reach the total before they once again collapsed. New Zealand recovered well after the early onslaught and were 178/2 before losing way. Will Young (17) and Glenn Phillips were the only other batters to get in double figures for New Zealand.

WATCH | Shubman Gill survives close run out call at non-striker's end against New Zealand in ODI World Cup

India have four wins in four games in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 and all those wins came while chasing. India batter Shubman Gill, who sat out first two games with sickness, says the team had talked about chasing well ahead of the quadrennial tournament and the team's happy with the results while chasing so far.

“Definitely, I think this is one of the things which was talked about, especially leading up to the World Cup, that we were not chasing that well, those big totals,” Gill said as reported by the ICC&nbsp;after India's win over Bangladesh on October 19 in Pune.

“I think having won all the four matches while chasing, I think it's a great way to have that momentum with us in those big games that we'll have moving forward.

“I think when we bat first, we know which template to go with and we have made big scores regularly. When we chase big scores, especially in big tournaments, it is important to chase. Once you gain confidence with the batsmen, it helps a lot in big matches.

“The coach and the captain have a bigger role to play. We have to chase the opponent. We'll see how the wicket is and how the conditions will be for batting.”

Before the World Cup started, there was a lot of talk of dew playing a role later in the evening but the conditions have stayed stable to the larger extent so far and Gill reiterated the same about Pune.

“I don't think the pitch changed much, honestly, it was a good batting wicket.”

“The approach while chasing, Rohit has been batting exceptionally well and he's been all guns blazing, especially while chasing. And I think that's giving us the right momentum.

“Then it's easier for the batsmen who are coming in when the run rate is around four or five in chasing.”

Gill was also all praise for senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli - India's top two run getters in the ongoing ODI World Cup and said that he tries to learn from them.

“To see them how they go about their business in World Cup and in big games is what I always try to learn from them.

“I think there's a fine line between sometimes being too aggressive or going in the shell, especially playing big games.

“But I think the way they play, the way their mindset is playing those big games in the World Cup is what I try to learn from them,” added the opening batter.

India next play against New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamsala.

ODI World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill opens up about India's strategy on chasing after four wins in a row

Rohit Sharma announcing on the game eve that Shubman Gill is 99% match-ready cheered the whole cricket-loving nation up, but there was still something to read between the lines. The young batter, perhaps in the best form, was down with dengue fever ahead of India’s warm-up matches, remaining out of contention ever since. In the past week, Gill got hospitalised in Chennai, travelled to Ahmedabad, regained fitness, and played the match against Pakistan and ended up on the winning side.

But how did he get fit so early and return to the side for the marquee World Cup clash? As per the latest reports, his treatment at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai should be credited for the same.&nbsp;

Going back to&nbsp;Rohit’s comments on Gill on the eve of the Pakistan match, Shubman was 100% fit, but the captain and the team management were concerned about things going wrong or a relapse of fever on the match-day, thus sticking with 99% claim instead of declaring him fit.&nbsp;

The bigger question at that point was how Gill would be able to endure 100 overs on the field, having recovered from the fever very recently. The right-handed batter had two days – Thursday and Friday to get back to the ground and prepare for the game.&nbsp;

<h2>From getting hospitalised to playing against Pakistan – Gill’s timeline</h2>

As first reported by Cricbuzz, Dr Sivarama Kannan - the physician responsible for Gill's speedy recovery, explained what happened behind the scenes and how he managed to recover so quickly.

"A young person, an athlete, usually recovers well. He was fully cooperative and attentive. He obliged to whatever we said," the doctor said.&nbsp;

"He came on the evening of the India-Australia match (October 8) and went back to the hotel the next evening. We had our male nurse, one person stationed there to give him timely injections and IV fluids,” the doctor added.

"He came to us on the second day of his illness... We didn't allow his body temperature to rise. We continuously administered medication to ensure that the fever didn't escalate, and we maintained his hydration to prevent the disease from taking hold."

"When the platelet count dropped below 50,000-60,000, we decided to admit him to the hospital. This was during India's match against Australia. The next morning, his platelet count dropped further, but by Monday evening, it began to increase, so we shifted him back to the hotel,” he added.

On Wednesday, Gill’s platelet count surpassed 100,000, which is when Dr. Kannan, discharged him.&nbsp;

"The following day, Tuesday, October 10, his platelet count increased, and it continued to rise on the subsequent day. By Wednesday morning, I informed him that he was fit to travel as his count had gone beyond one lakh. That afternoon, he left for Ahmedabad,” the doctor detailed.

Gill joined the Indian Team in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and trained for two days before the team management decided to play him at the last moment.&nbsp;

Gill scored four fours in his 11-ball 16-run-stay at the crease before he got caught in the point region.&nbsp;

India will next face Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday (Oct 19).

The bigger question at that point was how Gill would be able to endure 100 overs on the field, having recovered from the fever very recently. The right-handed batter had two days – Thursday and Friday to get back to the ground and prepare for the game. From getting hospitalised to playing against Pakistan – Gill’s timeline As first reported by Cricbuzz, Dr Sivarama Kannan - the physician responsible for Gill's speedy recovery, explained what happened behind the scenes and how he managed to recover so quickly. ALSO READ: I enjoy playing in India, it suits my style: England’s Root happy to return to form as Afghanistan tie looms "A young person, an athlete, usually recovers well. He was fully cooperative and attentive. He obliged to whatever we said," the doctor said. "He came on the evening of the India-Australia match (October 8) and went back to the hotel the next evening. We had our male nurse, one person stationed there to give him timely injections and IV fluids,” the doctor added. "He came to us on the second day of his illness... We didn't allow his body temperature to rise. We continuously administered medication to ensure that the fever didn't escalate, and we maintained his hydration to prevent the disease from taking hold." "When the platelet count dropped below 50,000-60,000, we decided to admit him to the hospital. This was during India's match against Australia. The next morning, his platelet count dropped further, but by Monday evening, it began to increase, so we shifted him back to the hotel,” he added. On Wednesday, Gill’s platelet count surpassed 100,000, which is when Dr. Kannan, discharged him. Gill joined the Indian Team in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and trained for two days before the team management decided to play him at the last moment. Gill scored four fours in his 11-ball 16-run-stay at the crease before he got caught in the point region. India will next face Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday (Oct 19). CWC: From being hospitalised to getting 99% match-ready, here's how Shubman Gill got fit in time

The Indian Captain, Rohit Sharma, won the toss and elected to bowl first against Pakistan in the marquee World Cup 2023 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Star opener Shubman Gill returned to the playing XI after recovering from dengue fever, while Pakistan named an unchanged XI.&nbsp;

<h2>Here are the two teams:</h2>

India&nbsp;- Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Pakistan - Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam(c), Mohammad Rizwan(w), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf

<h3>Crowd cheered on Gill’s announcement, booed Babar</h3>

The crowd seated at the Narendra Modi stadium erupted in joy when Rohit announced the decision to bring in Gill for Ishan Kishan. However, they booed Pakistan Captain Babar Azam when he addressed everyone during this turn.

Meanwhile, Gill returning to the playing XI means Ishan Kishan, who pressed for his case for a spot in the XI with his star performances in the lead-up to the CWC, got overlooked. Mentioning about the same, Rohit acknowledged Kishan’s contribution, saying,&nbsp;“Unfortunate for Ishan to miss out; feel for him, he stepped up when we needed him. Gill has been a special player for us over the past year or so, especially at this ground, and we wanted him back.”&nbsp;

He remained the only change, with India also opting to play Shardul Thakur ahead of Ravi Ashwin and Mohammed Shami.&nbsp;

With two wins in as many matches, India will look to carry forward the momentum and try and maintain their winning spree over Pakistan in the World Cups.

<h3>Pakistan aim to create history</h3>

Babar Azam admitted at the toss that even he looked to bowl first, considering several factors, including the dew that might play a role later in the innings.

Speaking with presenter and commentator Ravi Shastri at the toss, Babar said,

“We also wanted to bowl first. We have had good two wins, and momentum and confidence are high. Jam-packed stadium, we will enjoy it. We want to be good in the field, we had a couple of good practice sessions. Same team for us.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan is unchanged from their previous XI, which created history against Sri Lanka by completing the most successful run-chase in the tournament history.&nbsp;

With Pakistan batting first, they will aim to put runs on the board and bank on their bowlers to deliver in the second innings.&nbsp;

World Cup: Gill returns to XI as India bowl first against Pakistan; Ahmedabad crowd boos Babar Azam at toss

Shubman Gill missed India's opening two games in CWC 2023 edition due to dengue. He was admitted in a Chennai hospital, after India's opening game in the city where they beat Australia, and got discharged later. After missing India's Afghanistan face-off in Delhi, Gill flew to Ahmedabad and even trained for some time on Thursday (Oct 12). Thus, ardent Indian cricket fans are eager to know if he will feature in India's big-ticket clash versus Pakistan on Saturday (Oct 14) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MSK Prasad, India's former keeper-batter and BCCI chief selector, is confident that Gill will play the match versus Pakistan in Ahmedabad, which is the youngster's happy hunting ground.&nbsp;Talking to Hindustan Times, Prasad said that Gill would definitely, pointing out that practising in the nets has clearly displayed that the 24-year-old has recovered well and before one expected.&nbsp;

<h2>'He just had a fever. He has recovered'</h2>

Prasad said,&nbsp;<iframe allow="attribution-reporting" aria-label="Advertisement" data-google-container-id="6" data-load-complete="true" frameborder="0" height="1" id="google_ads_iframe_/1007232/IT_Teads_1x1_0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" name="google_ads_iframe_/1007232/IT_Teads_1x1_0" role="region" scrolling="no" tabindex="0" title="3rd party ad content" width="1"></iframe>"I think we can put an end to all kinds of speculations. It was not threatening at all that we would even think about replacements. It's all rumours that are coming out (about the seriousness of the illness) in whatever form that you are hearing."

He added, "What we heard was that as a matter of precaution, he couldn't play the second game otherwise he was fine. He stayed back for one more day in Chennai as a precaution. He recovered well, and was discharged. See if someone is playing for 1 hour, that means he has recovered. This is an all-important game against Pakistan. If he is fit, which I'm sure he is, then he should be in India's playing XI."

Gill has been in exceptional touch in 2023. Across formats, he has scored as many as seven centuries with five of them coming in the 50-over format. He scored a sublime 121 versus Bangladesh during India's victorious run in the Asia Cup&nbsp;and ended as the leading run-getter (302 runs) as well. Moreover, he followed it up with&nbsp;the Player-of-the-Series award (including a fine 104) in India's 2-1 home ODI series win over Australia in late September.&nbsp;

ODI World Cup: Shubhman Gill hits nets in Ahmedabad after recovery from dengue ahead of India-Pak match

Star batter Shubman Gill has arrived in Ahmedabad ahead of India’s ODI World Cup contest against Pakistan on Saturday (Oct 14). Gill, out of the Indian team due to dengue was hospitalised in Chennai and was advised not to travel to Delhi for India’s second World Cup contest against Afghanistan on Wednesday. However, it is still thought that Gill won’t play the World Cup match as he is yet to be match-fit against the arch-rivals Pakistan.

<h2>Gill arrives in Ahmedabad</h2>

While the Indian team was playing against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Gill arrived in Ahmedabad to prepare for the clash. Gill spent a night at the Kaurvery Hospital in Chennai and returned to the hotel before taking the flight to Ahmedabad. It was advised by the doctors that Gill was good enough to take a flight to Ahmedabad as he could not fly to Delhi with his teammates because his platelet count was low and a flight journey was not advisable.

The rest of the Indian team is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening as they prepare for the crunch clash. The team’s press conference takes place on Friday with a brief practice session scheduled for Thursday. The team will train with a full warm-up session on Friday, which will give a clear idea of how fit Gill will be.

It is thought that team management is not willing to take any risk with Gill, but will explore any opportunities if he trains on Friday. However, with no rush to get him back in the team, Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma are likely to continue as the openers. India are expected to go unchanged from their winning combination against Australia and Afghanistan but could explore the possibility of using Ravichandran Ashwin.

ODI World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill arrives in Ahmedabad ahead of Pakistan clash

Things aren't bright for Team India star opener Shubman Gill. Having missed India's CWC 2023 opener versus Australia, due to dengue, the batter remained in Chennai as Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. reached New Delhi on Monday (Oct&nbsp;9) for their upcoming clash versus Afghanistan on Wednesday (Oct 11).

It is to be noted that Gill was hospitalised in Chennai after his platelet count dropped. The young batter was&nbsp;discharged&nbsp;on Tuesday&nbsp;morning (Oct&nbsp;10),&nbsp;as per the news agency&nbsp;PTI.

On Monday, the&nbsp;Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill is closely being monitored by the&nbsp;medical team but remains&nbsp;out of the Afghanistan clash.

"Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October."

"He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team," read the statement from BCCI.

Gill's absence is a huge blow for Team India. The 24-year-old has been in exceptional form for the last year, especially in ODIs. In 2023, he has been on a run-scoring spree and has five centuries in the ODI format. Gill was in fine form in the Asia Cup, with a sublime 121&nbsp;versus Bangladesh, and ended with the Player-of-the-Series award in India's 2-1 win over Australia in three home ODIs before the World Cup.

In his absence, India were tottering at 2 for 3 in pursuit of 200 versus the Aussies in match 5 of CWC 2023 on Sunday (Oct&nbsp;8). Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) ensured India went past the finish line with six wickets&nbsp;and 52 balls to spare in Chennai.

Given Gill's condition, he is ruled out of the upcoming India-Pakistan clash&nbsp;on October 14&nbsp;in Ahmedabad. An official announcement can be expected in the coming days.

CWC 2023: India batter Shubman Gill discharged from Chennai hospital, unlikely to play vs Pakistan - Report

In what comes as a blow to the Indian cricket team, opener Shubman Gill will miss the second World Cup game against Afghanistan after sitting out the opening encounter against Australia due to dengue.

In what comes as a blow to the Indian cricket team, opener Shubman Gill will miss the second World Cup game against Afghanistan after sitting out the opening encounter against Australia due to dengue. According to a statement released by the BCCI, the star opener will stay in Chennai as the team moves to Delhi for the match against subcontinental neighbours at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on October 11. "Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023," read the BCCI statement. Gill will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team. "The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October," BCCI added. In the lead-up to the match against Australia, India's head coach Rahul Dravid had given a ray of hope to fans by remarking that a call would be taken on Gill's fitness. However, the batter did not even make it to the stadium on matchday. Gill's absence was felt Notably, Gill was replaced by Ishan Kishan in the opening match but the latter returned with disappointing returns. Chasing a full-length ball wide outside off, Kishan gifted a dolly to the second slip and departed on a golden duck on his World Cup debut. His departure had a butterfly effect as skipper Rohit Sharma and no.4 Shreyas Iyer also succumbed to the new ball and departed without troubling the scorers. India's mainstay Virat Kohli and middle-order batter KL Rahul were forced to steer the ship, braving a few anxious moments to guide India to the victory shores. Also read | ODI World Cup: Ishan Kishan to replace Shubman Gill at top against Australia; India may opt to play 2 spinners Gill's absence is especially notable as he has been one of the few batters that has been sizzling hot form coming into the marquee tournament. The batter from Punjab is India's highest run-getter in the 50-over format this year, amassing 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35. Batting at a strike rate of 105.03, the in-form batter has managed to cross the 50-run mark in half of his innings in the World Cup year. After Afghanistan, India face arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14 and the team management will be hoping that Gill gets back to full fitness by then. World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill ruled out of Afghanistan match, confirms BCCI

Star India opener and perhaps their best batter in form, Shubman Gill, continues to recover from dengue fever and may miss India’s next tie against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday (Oct. 11), the sources close to the information told ANI. It means Ishan Kishan, who opened against Australia in Gill’s absence, will retain his place for the second match. However, given the pace at which he is recovering, Gill could return to the side ahead of the marquee clash against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Oct. 14).

Per the latest reports, Gill will stay with the team and travel to Delhi, not to Chandigarh, to his home for rest.&nbsp;

Although head coach Rahul Dravid, before India’s first match in this CWC, said Gill is not feeling exerted and doing fine. The source claimed any decision around his selection will be taken after the next medical tests in the coming days.

“Shubman Gill is recovering, and he will be travelling with the team to Delhi,” the source told ANI. “He will be with the team and is not likely to go to his home in Chandigarh for rest. We hope that he will be back on the field before the match against Pakistan, and playing against Afghanistan will depend on his next medical report.”&nbsp;

<h2>India missed Gill in Chennai chase</h2>

Having scored plenty of runs in 2023, hitting five ODI hundreds this year at home, Gill was the batter to look out for in the lead-up to the World Cup. However, he was detected with dengue fever during the warm-up games and was ruled out.&nbsp;

Ishan Kishan, who pressed his case for a spot in the XI with superb outings during the Asia Cup 2023, especially against Pakistan, opened alongside Captain Rohit Sharma against Australia.&nbsp;

While India was chasing a mediocre total of 200 on a dry Chepauk pitch, they got reduced to 2 for 3 inside the second over, with Ishan, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer departing on ducks.

Ishan got out on a golden duck while chasing a speedy outswinger off Mitchell Starc in the first over, edging it to the first slip. Josh Hazlewood trapped Rohit in front and dismissed Iyer, caught at covers in the next.

With déjà vu striking for India, they looked in trouble.&nbsp;

However, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul bailed them out and added 165 runs for the fourth wicket, resulting in the home side crossing the line with six wickets.

World Cup 2023 - Shubman Gill could return for Pakistan match, to stay with team during recovery

India coach Rahul Dravid couldn't win an ODI World Cup in his illustrious career but being knocked out of 2007 edition in the group stage when he was the skipper remains the biggest dark spot of his playing days. The cricketer-turned-coach, however, has moved on from his playing days and focuses on helping the current group.

“It's a long time since I was a player. I almost forgot that I was actually a cricket player at one stage to be very honest with you,” Dravid said during a press conference ahead of India's match against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.

“I have moved on from that. I don't think of myself as a player anymore. Maybe that's the mind-space difference... I'm focused on helping the group to do the best they can," he added.

Talking about his job as a coach, Dravid said it's about supporting the vision of the captain, especially during the ongoing World Cup which runs till November 19.

“I mean in the end that's the job of the support staff, the job of the coach really is to support the vision of the captain and help him execute his vision over the course of the next couple of months and hope we can do that really well.”

“Yeah... I mean I guess you recognise as a coach that once the game starts, once the guys cross the line, there is only so much you can do.

“As coaches, we don't score a single run or take a single wicket in the tournament. All we can do is really support the players,” said Dravid.

India, however, are dealing with a potential setback with opening batter Shubman Gill suffering from Dengue fever. Coach Dravid, however, said that he's still not still ruled out of the game. In case of Gill's absence Ishan Kishan could open the innings for India with skipper Rohit Sharma.

ODI World Cup 2023: India coach Rahul Dravid opens up on 2007 setback ahead of Australia game

Shubman Gill may not play India's opening game of ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia on October 8 in Chennai as he's down with fever. The news was confirmed by a Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) official to the news agency Press Trust for India (PTI) on the condition of anonymity.

"Shubman has had a high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday and a call will be taken on his participation in the opening game," a BCCI source in the know of team developments told PTI.

It is being speculated that the batter is suffering from Dengue fever - a viral going around the country currently. The BCCI source, however, said that nothing is certain as of now and it could be normal viral fever as well.

"Let's not jump the gun. If it's normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics but it's completely the medical team's call," the source added.

Shubman, who bats up the order, is a vital clog in India's batting wheel. The batsman has been in prime form this year, scoring five hundreds in ODIs - the most in this year - while notching up more than 1,200 runs.

He is also the highest run-getter for India in ODIs since the 2019 ODI World Cup - 1,901. He's just behind Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (2,196 runs) on the list of batters with the most runs for each team since the 2019 edition.

In case Shubman doesn't get well in time to play the opening game, Ishan Kishan could open the innings for India with skipper Rohit Sharma.

Talking about India's preparations, the hosts were unlucky as both their warm-up games, against England and Netherlands, were washed out. The Men In Blue, however, remain confident with the ODI series win against Australia prior to warm-ups and the Asia Cup 2023 victory earlier this month.

ODI World Cup 2023: India batter Shubman Gill down with fever, may miss Australia match

India's batter in supreme form, Shubman Gill is unwell and said to miss the home team's first game in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. However, the Indian Coach and veteran cricketer, Rahul Dravid, offered hopes by saying, Gill is "feeling better than yesterday" and the medical team is monitoring him, we've got 36 hours to go (for the game).

Queried on whether Gill would be in a condition to play the game on Sunday, Dravid said, "the medical team hasn't ruled him out yet".

India will take on Australia at Chennai's MA Chidambaram stadium on 8th October, in what will be the opening game for both teams.

Having arrived in Chennai on Wednesday noon, the Indian and Australian teams commenced net practice sessions at the stadium on Thursday, while Gill had to give these sessions a miss, owing to his poor health as the home team's first game in the World Cup, Sunday's game is much awaited.

With the ODI format and its relevance being debated about, after the average footfall at the inaugural England vs. New Zealand game in Ahmedabad, Sunday's game is expected to show the enthusiasm that a team India game generates in the stadium and off it.

Speaking of the hectic travel and demanding World Cup schedule across ten-Indian cities, Dravid said he saw it as a great opportunity for the Indian team to perform before the home crowd and showcase their talent.

Queried about the ideal score for the India-Australia game, Rahul mentioned he saw no ideal score and teams would have to "adapt and react", as there was no template of a safe total. On the larger tournament, he elaborated on the red soil and black soil conditions at different pitches across venues and how each one posed a unique challenge.

On the dwindling popularity of the ODI format, Dravid said the Indian team hasn't played a lot of ODI Cricket in recent times. He listed out the T20 tournaments that had to be played in quick succession and also the impact of COVID as being some of the probable factors.

"It (ODI) is a fantastic format to play - how much will be decided by a variety of factors..." he said.

He also described how ODIs brought out the best in players and cited the example of Indian pacer Mohammad Siraj's six-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in the final game of the recently concluded Asia Cup ODI series.

Interestingly, in the 1987 Cricket World Cup, the first match of the tournament was held in Chennai and it was an India-Australia clash. Defending champions India lost the hard-fought game to Australia, by a margin of one run. Batting first, the Aussies notched up 270 in 50 overs.

In fact, there was a dispute over whether the final ball went for a four or for a six. It is said that the umpire signalled a four and the Aussies were unhappy. When the umpire consulted the Indian skipper Kapil Dev, he is said to have allowed it to be considered a six.

While India had a great chase and made it to 207/2, wickets started falling rapidly and India were struggling at 265/9.

In the penultimate ball of the last over, the final Indian wicket fell when the scorecard read 269.

It was a hard-fought match and the winning margin was a single run. Later in that tournament, Australia were crowned champions.

In September 2017, at an ODI against Australia in Chennai, the hosts had defeated the visitors by 26 runs. Many Indian fans saw this as a fitting response to the 1987 game, at the same venue.

In March 2023, when India and Australia played an ODI in the city, the visitors managed to defeat the hosts by 21 runs and bagged the series 2-1. Such is the legacy of India-Australia ODI games in Chennai!

ODI World Cup - Shubman Gill feeling better, medics haven't ruled him out for Sunday's game: Rahul Dravid

On Friday (Oct&nbsp;6), Rohit Sharma-led India dealt with a major blow after reports confirmed that in-form opener Shubman Gill is down with dengue and very likely to miss India's CWC '23 opener, where they face Australia on Sunday (Oct 8) in Chennai. It is possible that Gill will also miss the following game, where India host Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). In this scenario, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is set to replace Gill at the top and open with captain Rohit.&nbsp;

On India's big potential setback with no Gill for Australia clash, former Aussie captain Aaron Finch shared a brutal assessment. He shared that while India remain in a good stead even if they play without Gill, his absence will be surely felt due to the 'fear factor'.

He said while speaking to Star Sports, "What's going to stand out in this World Cup is the depth of these squads. Most teams are going with an idea what their ideal XI is but that doesn't always go to plan. There are injuries, fatigue as it's a long tournament. Still, India would be pretty comfortable. The difference will be the fear factor Shubman Gill puts into the Australian team."

<h2>'Australia will be a little more comfortable bowling to Ishan Kishan'</h2>

Lauding the 24-year-old Gill, Finch further opined, "He is someone who Australia at times really struggle to bowl to in any format because he has no weaknesses. He is somebody who can hit your best balls. He dominates spin, left-arm pacer, right-arm pace so I think that will be the only difference."

Finch feels Ishan, on the other hand, is slightly vulnerable at the start and has technical faults, which the Aussie pacers would like to exploit on Sunday.

In this regard, he added, "Australia will be a little more comfortable bowling to Ishan Kishan in the Powerplay. Starc and Hazelwood. I would go with that selection if I have to bowl to the left-hander. The outswing to Ishan because I still think he has a few technical faults he still hasn't quite ironed out over the last while. His front foot closes up quite a bit so if he can swing it early, they can get him. Once he gets in, he moves beautifully. But just those initial balls though, he tends to get vulnerable."

No official statement has come regarding Gill's unavailability for the Australia encounter, with head coach Rahul Dravid not ruling him out yet.&nbsp;

Sources within the team have disclosed to Cricbuzz that the right-hander showed symptoms of dengue while India were in Guwahati for the warm-up games.&nbsp;

At present, the severity of his illness is being assessed, however, team sources have suggested that he is not experiencing extreme weakness&nbsp;or discomfort.

He is somebody who can hit your best balls. He dominates spin, left-arm pacer, right-arm pace so I think that will be the only difference." Finch feels Ishan, on the other hand, is slightly vulnerable at the start and has technical faults, which the Aussie pacers would like to exploit on Sunday. But just those initial balls though, he tends to get vulnerable." No official statement has come regarding Gill's unavailability for the Australia encounter, with head coach Rahul Dravid not ruling him out yet. Sources within the team have disclosed to Cricbuzz that the right-hander showed symptoms of dengue while India were in Guwahati for the warm-up games. At present, the severity of his illness is being assessed, however, team sources have suggested that he is not experiencing extreme weakness or discomfort. Gill puts fear into Australia, Ishan has...: Aaron Finch on India's potential setback before CWC '23 opener

Keeper-batter Ishan Kishan will open alongside Captain Rohit Sharma in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 opener against Australia on Sunday (Oct 8) in Chennai. With the man in the purple patch, Shubman Gill, getting diagnosed with dengue fever in the lead-up to the marquee event, he will sit out for a few days, the sources in the know revealed.

Ishan, who got picked to fill the void in middle order if and when required during the long tournament, has to deploy a different approach at the top as hosts India is ready to launch its CWC campaign.

Gill started showing dengue-like symptoms upon Team India’s arrival in Guwahati for their first CWC warm-up tie. After he informed team doctor Rizwan Khan (before India’s second practice match against the Netherlands in Thiruvananthapuram), Gill underwent tests. On Thursday evening, Gill was taken for further tests in Chennai, where it was confirmed that he had dengue fever.

Although the severity of the fever is still being assessed, as per the team doctor, Gill is not experiencing extreme weakness or discomfort.&nbsp;

"He's not feeling well, and the medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hopeful for his speedy recovery,” a team official told Cricbuzz on Friday morning.

Given it takes longer to recover from the dengue fever, with kidneys likely getting affected, Gill’s return timeline is not decided as of yet.&nbsp;

With Gill getting sidelined for a few days at least, likely missing the second game against Afghanistan as well, India would be using Ishan’s services at the top.

Playing at the top, Ishan scored his maiden double hundred against Bangladesh in Dhaka last year.

Even against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 clash, Ishan was the one who weathered the storm and stitched a handy stand with Hardik Pandya to bail India out of trouble.

His grit impressed everyone as selectors opted to pick him as one of the backups in the ODI World Cup squad.

<h2>India likely to play two spinners against Australia</h2>

With India playing their opener against the former five-time winners in Chennai, Rohit will play Ravi Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav as two specialist spinners, sitting out all-rounder Shardul Thakur and seamer Mohammed Shami.

While Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, number one ODI bowler Mohammed Siraj will be paired alongside him.&nbsp;

ODI World Cup: Ishan Kishan to replace Shubman Gill at top against Australia; India may opt to play 2 spinners

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India opened their campaign in Asian Games 2023 with a 23-run win over Nepal on Tuesday (October 3). Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden T20I ton (49-ball 100) and Rinku Singh's 15-ball 37 not out, India posted 202 for 4 and restricted the opposition to 179 for 9. With the win, India have progressed to the semi-finals. Jaiswal continued his rich form and scored his first-ever T20I century. In addition, he surpassed Shubman Gill to achieve a major Indian record.&nbsp;

Jaiswal, at the age of 21 years and 279 days, went past Gill's T20I record of being India's youngest-ever centurion in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the right-hander scored his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand early this year. The 24-year-old Gill&nbsp;had smashed an impressive 126 not out, the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Back then, Gill was 23 years old.

Talking about Jaiswal, the left-hander has been in sublime form this year. He ended IPL 2023 as the fifth-highest run-getter (with 625 runs in 14 games, including a best of 124). He carried his form during India's all-format tour of West Indies, slamming an impressive 171 on his Test debut and was among the runs in the five T20Is as well. Now, the youngster has started the Asian Games with a bang. Hence, he will be desperate to carry on with the momentum and take India to gold at the games -- where he also became the country's first-ever centurion on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jaiswal is surely ticking all the boxes at the moment and is emerging as a strong contender to open for India in the next year's T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. However, the mega event is still far away, hence, he would like to maintain consistency in the upcoming months.

India vs Nepal, Asian Games: Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks Shubman Gill's India record after maiden T20I ton

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 gets underway on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the tournament-opener, many former cricketers and experts have shared their predictions for the upcoming marquee event in India. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has also made a bold claim by stating that the World Cup could belong to India's in-form batter Shubman Gill.

Shubman has been in exceptional form in 2023, especially in the ODI format. He has so far scored 1,230 runs in 20 innings along with as many as five centuries. Overall, he is the No. 2 ranked ODI batter (after Babar Azam) and ended as the Player-of-the-Series in the recent India-Australia ODIs, at home. Thus, all eyes are on the 24-year-old as one waits to see&nbsp;how he will respond to the World Cup pressure.

Chopra believes Gill will do exceptionally well and this could be his World Cup, with at least two or three hundreds.

<h2>'Gill is a quality player and this World Cup could be his'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "This tournament could be Shubman Gill’s. In all fairness, the tournament will belong to the top three batters. The good ones will make a lot of records. Shubman Gill will score a lot of runs. I feel he will score at least two hundreds; I won’t be surprised if he hits three as well. One of them could be a daddy hundred if he doesn’t get tired. Gill is a quality player and this World Cup could be his."

“At one point of time, it seemed like he gets stuck against left-arm spin. But he showed he can take that on as well during his last hundred in the Asia Cup. It was his best ODI knock in my opinion,"&nbsp;Chopra added.

<h2>'Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation'</h2>

Yuvraj Singh also heaped praise on Gill during his recent interaction with The Week. He stated, "Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. The guy works hard. Since he was 19-20, his attitude has always been like that. He works four times harder than a normal guy since he was a kid. Whatever I have worked with him, he can be the player of this era."

"He (Gill) scored 91 in a Test match which India won (versus Australia in Gabba). He scored two fifties as well on his first tour to Australia which I don't know how many players have done. I am sure he will score runs in Australia, South Africa as well as England," Yuvraj opined.

The former all-rounder added, "He (Gill) is in such a stage right now that he is fearless. He can be a game-changer for India in the World Cup. He opened up the game against Pakistan and put the bowlers under pressure."

Overall, Gill has played 35 ODIs since his debut in 2019. He has&nbsp;scored a remarkable 1,917 runs with six hundreds, at an average of 66.10, with a best of 213.

Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form in 2023. The right-hander has had a dream run across formats, slamming his maiden T20I ton as well, but his form in ODIs made heads turn. Shubman Gill has potential to become best player of this generation: Yuvraj Singh's BIG claim ahead of CWC '23

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa heaped praise on Shreyas Iyer and feels the middle-order batter has it in him to lead India in the future. Iyer returned to international cricket after a long time, due to back issues, during the Asia Cup 2023 edition. However, he batted only once and missed the Super Four stage and the final, won by Rohit Sharma-led India by ten wickets, as his back issues resurfaced, putting his ODI World Cup spot in danger. Thus, the ongoing three ODIs between India and Australia, at home, became more important for Iyer to prove his form and fitness.

After being dismissed for 3 in the series opener, won by India by five wickets in Mohali, Iyer came into his own in the second and penultimate ODI, in Indore, and slammed a brilliant 105. After Iyer's third ODI century, Uthappa lavished huge praise on the talented Indian batter and backed him as a potential captain for the future. On his YouTube channel, he said,&nbsp;"Shreyas Iyer, what a relief! It's been a long time coming. We've always known that he is a high-class player. In my books, he is someone who can go on to lead India as well in the future. Shreyas is a solid player and he showed us why in that hundred against Australia."

Uthappa further stated,&nbsp;"Just the pace at which he batted, the control, and the connection. To have a couple of low scores and then have a freak kind of spasm that keeps him out of action for some time. To come back like that, especially after the injury, is not easy and takes a lot of character."

On the other hand, Uthappa -- who was part of India's terrible run in 2007 ODI World Cup and emphatic win in the inaugural T20 World Cup later that year -- also lauded in-form Indian opener Shubman Gill. Gill scored an impressive 104 in the Indore ODI. He has already slammed five hundreds in the format so far this year and will enter the forthcoming ODI World Cup, at home, as the No. 1 ranked Indian batter (second overall after Babar Azam). Uthappa feels he is the next big thing in Indian cricket and certain to take over from Virat Kohli as the upcoming batting star of the country.&nbsp;

"If you have to look at a few things leading into the World Cup, one would be Shubman Gill's form. He is in such wonderful form that you want to protect that a little bit. You want to make sure that you save all those runs for an important tournament like the World Cup. All signs lead to Shubman Gill being the next big thing in Indian cricket. It certainly seems like he is going to take over from Virat Kohli as the next big Indian batting star. Here's hoping that he continues his good form, goes into the World Cup feeling exceptionally good, and scores lots and lots of runs for India. Hopefully, he sets high standards for himself and could very well be the Man of the Series."

Gill has been rested for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, being held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). Iyer, however, will hope to replicate his recent performance in the final encounter to help India whitewash the three ODIs. India won the first two games by five wickets and 99 runs (DLS method), respectively.

On his YouTube channel, he said, "Shreyas Iyer, what a relief! It's been a long time coming. We've always known that he is a high-class player. In my books, he is someone who can go on to lead India as well in the future. Shreyas is a solid player and he showed us why in that hundred against Australia." Uthappa further stated, "Just the pace at which he batted, the control, and the connection. To have a couple of low scores and then have a freak kind of spasm that keeps him out of action for some time. To come back like that, especially after the injury, is not easy and takes a lot of character." Gill scored an impressive 104 in the Indore ODI. He has already slammed five hundreds in the format so far this year and will enter the forthcoming ODI World Cup, at home, as the No. 1 ranked Indian batter (second overall after Babar Azam). Uthappa feels he is the next big thing in Indian cricket and certain to take over from Virat Kohli as the upcoming batting star of the country. Hopefully, he sets high standards for himself and could very well be the Man of the Series." Gill has been rested for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, being held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). Iyer, however, will hope to replicate his recent performance in the final encounter to help India whitewash the three ODIs. India won the first two games by five wickets and 99 runs (DLS method), respectively. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
