It was advised by the doctors that Gill was good enough to take a flight to Ahmedabad as he could not fly to Delhi with his teammates because his platelet count was low and a flight journey was not advisable.

The rest of the Indian team is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening as they prepare for the crunch clash. The team’s press conference takes place on Friday with a brief practice session scheduled for Thursday. Speaking of the hectic travel and demanding World Cup schedule across ten-Indian cities, Dravid said he saw it as a great opportunity for the Indian team to perform before the home crowd and showcase their talent.

Queried about the ideal score for the India-Australia game, Rahul mentioned he saw no ideal score and teams would have to "adapt and react", as there was no template of a safe total. On the larger tournament, he elaborated on the red soil and black soil conditions at different pitches across venues and how each one posed a unique challenge.

On the dwindling popularity of the ODI format, Dravid said the Indian team hasn't played a lot of ODI Cricket in recent times. He listed out the T20 tournaments that had to be played in quick succession and also the impact of COVID as being some of the probable factors.

"It (ODI) is a fantastic format to play - how much will be decided by a variety of factors..." he said.

On Thursday evening, Gill was taken for further tests in Chennai, where it was confirmed that he had dengue fever.

Although the severity of the fever is still being assessed, as per the team doctor, Gill is not experiencing extreme weakness or discomfort.&nbsp;

"He's not feeling well, and the medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hopeful for his speedy recovery,” a team official told Cricbuzz on Friday morning.

Given it takes longer to recover from the dengue fever, with kidneys likely getting affected, Gill’s return timeline is not decided as of yet.&nbsp;

With Gill getting sidelined for a few days at least, likely missing the second game against Afghanistan as well, India would be using Ishan’s services at the top.

Playing at the top, Ishan scored his maiden double hundred against Bangladesh in Dhaka last year.

Even against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 clash, Ishan was the one who weathered the storm and stitched a handy stand with Hardik Pandya to bail India out of trouble.

His grit impressed everyone as selectors opted to pick him as one of the backups in the ODI World Cup squad.

Gill has been in stellar form this year with 1230 runs in 20 matches. The Indian opener has also scored five hundreds and five fifties in this period as well.

Speaking on what sets Gill apart, de Villiers said: “His technique and style is quite simple and basic generally what you say about some of the best players in the world.”

“He is still young, which is incredible because he looks like an experienced campaigner already. We are going to heard a lot about him in the future and in this world cup as I think he is going to be the top run scorer,” he added.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag was not impressed with the way Shubman Gill gave away his wicket in the second ODI against Australia on September 24 in Indore. Gill, who scored 104, got out in the 35th over of the innings as India plundered their way to 399/5 in 50 overs.

Sehwag, however, was of the opinion that Gill missed out on a bigger score. The former India opener, who has a double hundred to his name at the same venue, said he could have scored even 200 today (match day).&nbsp;

“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn't have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn't have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” Sehwag said in a conversation with Cricbuzz.

Had he played for 9-10 overs more he could have completed his second double hundred. Rohit Sharma scored three double hundreds. He had the opportunity today. A 200 has been scored at this venue by a player named Sehwag, because it is that sort of a track,” he added.

Speaking to the media after the last Super Four game in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, Gill said the instructions were clear on what to do and how to approach the chase on this track the other night. Detailing a little on this, Gill added the chat before the start of the innings was to reduce the dot ball percentage and play late and close to the body as possible.

"On slow wickets, there are a lot of dot balls. Our chat as a batting group is to reduce dot balls and rotate strike," Gill said during the post-match presser.&nbsp;

"The track was slow and was taking turn, so taking singles is not easy, especially for new batters. The talk was about playing it late and close to the body."&nbsp;

"On slow wickets, more runs are scored square of the wicket and less down the ground. So, the aim was to do that," the India opener added.

Indian pitches, during one and a half month CWC, will get slower, with spinners playing a major role during the fag end of the tournament. Having suffered the wrath of struggling against some quality spin bowling against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in recent outings, Gill underlines the challenges Team India needs to work on during the marquee event.

"We had a camp in Bangalore before coming here and practised on similar surfaces," Gill said. "The World Cup is such a long tournament, and as we go deep into the tournament, the wickets will get slower. It is not easy for batsmen coming in to rotate strike and minimise dot balls. That's what as a batting unit and bowling group we are looking to overcome."

Gill, in 2023, averages more than 68, with 1025 runs in 17 matches so far.&nbsp;
