Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has been fined for slow overate during his side’s defeat to defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday (Mar 26). The contest played at the iconic Chepauk Stadium saw GT lose by 63 runs in what was a repeat of the IPL 2023 final. Gill has been slapped with a fine of $14,000 (INR 12 lakh) for the first time offence and could be suspended if he repeats the offence.

<h2>Gill was fined for slow overrate</h2>

"As it was his team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined Rs 12 lakhs," an IPL statement said.

The fine was imposed by match referee Vengalil Narayanan Kutty for maintaining slow over rate having opted to bowl first. The fine will be a setback for GT considering Gill will now have to be cautious for further matches during the tournament. A repeat of the offence will see him serve a one-match suspension with an additional fine.

<h2>What happened in the match?</h2>

Playing in their first away match of the IPL 2024 season, GT were beaten convincingly by the CSK side led by Ruturaj Gaikwad at Chepauk. Having made a hilarious call of overturning his decision at toss, Gill’s decision did not pay dividends as CSK posted 206/6 in their 20 overs. Shivam Dube was the hero of the match for CSK as he scored 51 while both openers Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra scored 46 runs each to steer their side to a big total.

In the chase, GT never got going and were restricted to 143/8 in their 20 overs as they suffered a 63-run defeat. Sai Sudharsan was the top scorer for the side with 37 while the rest of the batters did not contribute enough, leading to the defeat.

GT will next take field on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are in search of their first win of the season.

IPL 2024: Shubman Gill fined for slow overate during CSK vs GT clash in Chennai

Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will face off in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season on March 26 for the first time since the epic IPL 2023 final. CSK came out as winners in last year's final, thanks to Ravindra Jadeja's two boundaries off the last two balls to take CSK home. A lot, however, has changed since then, including the captains of each side.

CSK are now led by Ruturaj Gaikwad who took over the reins from long-time CSK skipper MS Dhoni while GT have Shubman Gill as their captain. Gill was handed over the captaincy after Hardik Pandya decided to move to his old franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the ongoing season.

Both teams have won their opening match, with CSK beating RCB in the season opener and GT beating MI in Pandya's homecoming to Gujarat's home ground in Ahmedabad. Both the captains impressed with their skills in the opening game, especially Gill, who marshalled his troops well to defend 169 runs.

Talking about the team, CSK have a robust opening combination comprising skipper Gaikwad and Kiwi Rachin Ravindra while GT are going strong with captain Gill and veteran Wriddhiman Saha at the top. CSK's middle order includes Ajinkya Rahane, who has transformed into an all-attacking batter since joining CSK last season, along with New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, hard-hitting Shivam Dube, India all-rounder Jadeja and MS Dhoni.

GT, on the other hand, are a bit thin on experience but have a talented pool of players. Sai Sudharsan comes at number three for the Titans followed by Afghan Azmatullah Omarzai, South African David Miller, Tamil Nadu all-rounder Vijay Shankar and death-over specialist Rahul Tewatia. Rashid Khan, who spearheads GT's spin department, can also bat decently if the situation arises.

In the bowling department, GT will again rely on former CSK player Mohit Sharma's experience along with Aussie Spencer Johnson's pace to go with India veteran Umesh Yadav as well. For CSK, Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman and Jadeja will be the key.

'He is stepping up to the plate after Hardik Pandya': Moody cautions GT's new captain Gill ahead of IPL 2024

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra is not nervous about newly-elected captain Shubman Gill leading the franchise in IPL 2024; instead, he is excited to see how the young prodigy operates at the helm with a strong squad. Speaking to the media ahead of the 17th season that begins on March 22 in Chennai, Nehra said more than wanting Gill to succeed as a captain, he wants him to become a better person, a natural pathway to becoming a great leader.

"The whole of India, not only me," Nehra said. "He (Gill) is that kind of player. He is someone who is looking to play and looking to do well in all three formats. So we, as a franchise, as a support staff, are really excited to help him grow as a person more than as a captain. If he grows as a person, then he will definitely be a better captain going forward,” the GT head coach added.

Addressing the elephant in the room regarding Gill being a rookie in the leadership group, Nehra backed his ace player to deliver in his maiden stint as IPL captain.&nbsp;

Nehra said since ten teams play in this cash-rich league, several such instances of players not having enough captaincy experience doing well have been witnessed and will keep making headlines in times to come.

"And you know, Hardik also did not captain anywhere before he captained GT. Now there are ten teams. This is not the first example. You will see more and more people, you know, somebody like Shreyas Iyer, even Nitish Rana did captaincy for KKR.&nbsp;

So, this is a great experience for all these guys, and let's see who capitalises on that and move ahead, again, first as a person then as a player,” Nehra explained.

<h2>GT behind Gill</h2>

Shubman Gill is one of the most promising batters across formats worldwide, let alone from India, and GT’s batting coach, Gary Kirsten, feels this will help him as a leader in the upcoming season. Kirsten added that coaches will assist Gill in getting the best out of his players while backing him to lead the team the way he wants.

“I think the leadership is going to be an important role for him, and I know he's really keen to do the job, and we, as coaches, just need to assist him in making sure he's getting the best out of his players and he's leading the team appropriately, and in the way we want him to lead,” Kirsten said.&nbsp;

Kirsten heaped praises on Gill, saying, he’s determined but must accept the challenges that come his way.&nbsp;

“He's a quality player. He's a thoroughly nice person. He's got massive motivation and determination as an individual, which we've seen when playing for India.&nbsp;

"But like any new leader, he's starting from scratch, and he's going to be met with challenges along the way, and we, as coaches, will just have to assist him along the way,” Kirsten said.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: GT coach Nehra throws weight behind new captain Shubman Gill, says he’s excited to watch him operate

England pacer James Anderson has revealed what led to the war of words between him and India batter Shubman Gill in the Dharamsala Test. Notably, Anderson's teammate Jonny Bairstow was also seen having a sledging contest with Gill while batting in the second innings. A heated discussion between Gill and Bairstow broke out owing to the sledging episode between Gill and Anderson on the previous day (Mar 8) of the Test.

Speaking to the BBC Tailenders podcast, Anderson said: "I said something to him like, 'Do you get any runs outside India.'"

To which Gill replied: "It's time to retire," revealed Anderson and added: "Then two balls later, I got him out."

Gill had scored a century by the time Anderson got him out to put India in a commanding position. After the hosts got all out at 477, England faltered in their second inning to lose the game by an inning&nbsp;and 64 runs.&nbsp;

However, when Bairstow came on to bat, he asked Gill "What did you say to Jimmy about retiring?"

"I told him (Anderson) he should retire," responded Gill from the slip cordon. "And then he got you out next ball," chirped Bairstow in reply.

"So what?" Gill asked before adding, "He can get me out after a 100 …"

"100 per cent" quipped the Englishman to which Gill replied: "How many hundreds have you scored in this series?"

"How many have you scored full stop?" said Bairstow and ended the slugfest.

Bairstow, notably, had a horrible series with the bat, scoring just 238 runs in 10 innings with a highest of 39 which incidentally came in the last inning of the series.

England couldn't match India in either the batting or bowling departments and much of the onus lies on their seniors, including Bairstow. The visitors eventually lost the series 1-4 despite winning the first Test in Hyderabad.

Gill-Anderson-Bairstow sledging fest went on for two days in Dharamsala Test

Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan gave a tongue-in-cheek advice to Shubman Gill while the latter was involved with England's Jonny Bairstow in a heated sledging contest during the fifth Test between the two sides in the Dharamsala Test. India eventually won the match by an innings and 64 runs to wrap up the series 4-1. The incident happened on the third and decisive day (Mar 9) of the Test when Bairstow, playing his 100th Test for England, came on to bat in the second innings.

The bone of contention was Gill and English veteran James Anderson's exchange a day prior in India's first innings. Gill, who scored 110 on day 2 (Mar 8) of the match, was eventually dismissed by Anderson.

When Bairstow came on to bat he asked Gill "What did you say to Jimmy about retiring?"

Dharamsala Test: Sarfaraz Khan offers best ADVICE to Shubman Gill while sledging Jonny Bairstow - WATCH

Shubman Gill (110) and Rohit Sharma (103) headlined India's charge on Day 2 of the fifth and final Test versus England in Dharamsala on Friday (March 8). After the visitors&nbsp;were all-out for 218 on the opening day, India strengthened their position by reaching 473-8 at stumps on Friday --&nbsp;leading by 255 --&nbsp;after a solid foundation provided by Gill and skipper Rohit. As India have a solid chance to end the five Test-match series&nbsp;with a 4-1 scoreline, Gill's father reflected on his son's return to form but stated that he isn't pleased with the right-hander opting to bat at No. 3.

It is to be noted that Gill chose to bat at No. 3 in Tests after Yashasvi Jaiswal came into the picture, since the West Indies tour last year. While the 24-year-old took a lot of time to get going at his new position, he has come to his usual best since the second Test of the ongoing home series versus Ben Stokes &amp; Co.&nbsp;

Gill's father Lakhwinder opined on what led to his son's return to form. Speaking to PTI, he said, "Stepping out has made a big difference, he had stopped doing that and that created pressure. Since his U-16 days, he has been stepping out to the spinners and pacers as well to cut the movement."

"The moment you don't play your natural game you are in trouble. The whole game is about confidence, when you get one good innings you are back to your best. Since his U-16 days, he used to make tons of runs,"&nbsp;Lakhwinder said.

<h2>'It suits&nbsp;Cheteshwar Pujara who has a defensive game'</h2>

Lakhwinder also&nbsp;revealed that he isn't happy with Shubman coming one down. "He should have continued to open. It is not right at all I feel. When you sit in dressing room for longer, the pressure tends&nbsp;to increase. Number 3 is not opening neither it is a middle-order spot."

"Plus his game his not like that, it suits the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara who has a defensive game. When the ball is new you get more loose balls, when you come in after 5-7 overs, the ball is still shiny and the bowler is also settled with his length."&nbsp;

He, however, added, "I don't interfere in his decisions. I just train with him. He is old enough to make his own decsions. I made decisions on his behalf only when he was a teenager."

<h2>'I'm hoping that he is proud of my effort'</h2>

Meanwhile, Gill opined on his knock and spoke about his father's presence in the stands during the second day's play in Dharamsala. After stumps, he told the broadcasters, "It was my first time that he's (talking about his father) watching me play (in an international game). It was his vision (to play Test cricket) and I'm hoping that he is proud of my effort today."

This became Gill's fourth Test century overall, second while batting at No. 3. He has been in superb form in the England series, in the absence of senior batters, and will be content with his overall effort. For now, Gill has secured the No. 3 spot in whites.

'It suits Pujara...': Shubman Gill's father not pleased with him batting at No. 3 despite Dharamsala Test ton

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill headlined day two in Dharamsala with twin tons. While Sarfaraz Khan contributed with another fifty, debutant Devdutt Padikkal scored an impressive 65 off 103 balls to keep his team ahead. First-inning hero Kuldeep Yadav remained unbeaten on 27 as India leads by 255 at stumps on day two.

Rohit and Gill began from where they left as the pair went after the English bowlers in the first session. Both right-handed batters completed their respective hundreds before&nbsp;lunch on day two, with Gill notching his second of the series.&nbsp;

With his brilliant 103, Rohit entered an elite list of Indian openers with the most Test tons against England. He now equalled Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of four hundreds while leading the chart for batters with the most tons (6) for India since 2021. It was Rohit’s 48th international ton (43rd as an opener).

<h2>Stokes returns to bowling with a 'Jaffa'&nbsp;</h2>

Just when Rohit got to his hundred, England captain Ben Stokes, bowling for the first time since Ashes last year, clean bowled him off his first delivery. Soon after, James Anderson removed Shubman Gill, clean bowled in the next over on 110.&nbsp;

Padikkal and Sarfaraz added 97 for the fourth wicket before Bashir returned to pick both of them.

Dharamsala Test: Rohit, Gill floor England with twin tons on day two; Bashir shines for visitors

India were reduced to 120-5 in pursuit of 192 on Day 4 of the fourth and penultimate Test versus England at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Monday (Feb 26). However, Shubman Gill (52*) was joined by Dhruv Jurel -- who stood tall with a fine 90 in India's first innings -- and the duo stitched an unbeaten 72-run sixth-wicket stand to take India to a stunning five-wicket win and also to their 17th successive red-ball series win at home.

The two batted negated a tough session of play with England spinners, Tom Hartley, Shoaib Bashir (who took a five-fer in the first essay) and Joe Root posing some questions on a pitch with a tinge of low bounce. Gill-Jurel ran well between wickets and defended confidently before looking for runs. As a result, the duo remained unbeaten and gave their side a stunning five-wicket win.

After the match, Gill recalled his partnership with Jurel, who ended with scores of 90 and 39* in the Ranchi Test. Talking to the broadcasters, Gill credited his partner to have taken the pressure off him. He said, "We were put under pressure by them, but we got a good start by our openers, losing couple of wickets put pressure. But Jurel came out and took the pressure off. You have to see the situation and play accordingly - they were bowling well and protecting the boundaries, also not giving maidens and keep picking the singles (was the mindset). I just told him (Jurel) you batted beautifully in the first innings and to have the same mindset, try to use the feet to negate the off-spinner. The way he came down and played was beautiful."

At the presentation ceremony, Jurel was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match for his wicketkeeping skills and two crucial knocks. He said, "I&nbsp;play according to the demands of the situation. The 1st innings, we needed to get runs as well, we knew we had to bat last and so any runs would be vital. I was involved in some partnerships, so credit does go to all those who stayed and added runs. I just saw the ball and then reacted to it, not thinking too far ahead. The conversation was good (with Shubman Gill in the 2nd innings), we just broke it into 10-run sets and started developing the partnership."

It was Jurel's priceless 90 which ensured India gave only a 46-run lead to England after they were tottering at 177-7 in response to Ben Stokes &amp; Co.'s 353. In the second innings, England crumbled to 145 with R Ashwin taking 5 for 51 as they setup a tricky 192-run target. India were 84 for no loss, thanks to skipper Rohit Sharma's 55, before they lost the plot with regular fall of wickets only to be rescued by Gill and Jurel.&nbsp;

With this result, India have taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five Tests with the final encounter in Dharamsala, starting&nbsp;on March 7.

IND vs ENG: 'Dhruv Jurel took the pressure off me' - Shubman Gill on unbeaten stand in tense Ranchi chase

Mohammed Shami IPL: Gujarat Titans (GT) have dealt&nbsp;a major blow as senior Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the forthcoming IPL 2024 edition. Shami will miss the entire season to undergo surgery for an ankle injury, which has kept him out of action since India's ODI World Cup 2023 campaign at home. The speedster missed the entire South Africa tour and is also not part of the ongoing home Tests versus England.

A senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity, "Shami was in London in last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon. But the injection hasn't worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for UK for surgery. IPL seems out of question."

Shami's injury is a big blow to Shubman Gill-led GT ahead of IPL 2024, whose schedule is expected to be out soon.

Shami has been in sublime touch in recent times. Having missed the initial ODI WC games, the pacer still managed to end the tournament as the leading wicket-taker (24). Even in IPL 2023, he was the highest wicket-taker, ending with 28 scalps at an average of 18.64 and a best of 4 for 11 for the then Hardik Pandya-led side. His performance was instrumental in the one-time winners ending as the runners-up.&nbsp;

The new development has pointed fingers at the injury rehabilitation management programme planned by the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bengaluru, for Shami. It is highly unlikely for the pacer to regain full fitness ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup and also for the Test series versus Bangladesh and New Zealand (later in the year).&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans pacer Mohammed Shami to miss full season, undergo surgery for ankle injury

India batter Shubman Gill says that pacers have been the difference in the ongoing five-Test series against England. Gill's comments came ahead of the fourth Test in Ranchi which starts Friday (Feb 23). After three matches, India are 2-1 up but they have rested their ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the Ranchi game. Bumrah has taken 17 wickets in the series so far - the most for both teams. Gill acknowledged Bumrah as the leader of the pack and said that Mohammed Siraj had done well too.

"Our fast bowlers have been brilliant in the series and that has been the difference between the two sides. Bumrah is the leader of our pace attack, but I think the way Mohammad Siraj has bowled, especially in the last innings of the Rajkot Test match (has been great). He has experience in Indian conditions," Gill said in the press conference on Wednesday (Feb 21) ahead of the Ranchi Test.

IND vs ENG: 'Pacers the difference between two sides,' says India batter Shubman Gill ahead of Ranchi Test

Former India captain Anil Kumble has praised star batter Shubman Gill and advised him to keep his aggressive nature after India extended their second innings lead on Day 3 of the Rajkot Test against England. Gill, who has drawn criticism in recent times for his batting approach is unbeaten on 65 at Day 3 and looks on course for his second hundred of the five-match Test series against England. According to Kumble, Gill should have good composure and praised him for his approach during the second innings of the Rajkot Test.

<h2>Kumble opines on Gill</h2>

"I think Shubman Gill, when his intent is aggressive, I think he's a much better player. He's looking to score runs and that's the way he plays. But when he gets subdued that's when his feet don't move and then he goes hard at the ball. But today it was a fantastic," Kumble said while speaking on the broadcast.

"We saw two senior pros taking India to safety in the first innings. Rohit Sharma and Jadeja. And in the second innings, these two young players certainly put India ahead of England," said Kumble.

IND vs ENG, 3rd Test Day 3: Yashasvi Jaiswal's ton after Mohammed Siraj's four-for put India on top in Rajkot

India captain Rohit Sharma is very proud of his team for winning the second Test against England in Vizag and levelling the five-match series 1-1. The thumping 106-run victory came on the back of star performances mainly from three individuals – Yashasvi Jaiswal (209 in the first innings), Bumrah (nine&nbsp;wickets in the match) and Shubman Gill (104 in the second innings), and Rohit feels other batters need to step up in the remainder of the series.

While praising the wicket for being fair and batting-friendly, the India captain admitted that batters failed to convert those starts. He said the squad at the helm is young and will learn with time.

The opener added this win will boost the side’s confidence as they chase another series win at home in this format.&nbsp;

"The wicket was really good to bat on. That's where, if I have to point anything, a lot of the batters got the start, but didn't convert into a big score, and [that's] something that we really need to look into," Rohit said at the post-match ceremony.&nbsp;

"But, again, having said that, I do understand they're very young, [and] they're very new to this form of the game. So obviously, it will take some time for us. It's important from our side to give them confidence, and this win, obviously, will give them a lot of confidence, and [tell them] just to go out there and play freely,” the India captain added.

<h2>‘Proud of this team’</h2>

Bazball is all over everyone and vowed to punish India in their conditions. Having won the first Test in Hyderabad from a losing position, England showed what their newest brand of cricket can do. Even in the recently-concluded second Test, England remained calm during the 399-run chase.&nbsp;

India didn’t allow them to build pressure on them, and courtesy of handy performances from Bumrah and Ashwin, they won this tie. Rohit acknowledged his team’s performance, saying,&nbsp; "Very, very proud of such a young squad in terms of the Test matches that they've played. To come up against a team like that, [who] won the first Test match, and then to come out and play like that for us, [it's] very, very positive."

"Like I said, a lot of the guys are quite young in terms of playing this form of the game for us. So it'll take some time, obviously, to be absolutely spot on, but you've got to give it to them. [They need] a little more time, a little more freedom as well. And that is something that we are constantly talking in the changing room that we want these guys to have some time in the middle, go and play freely without any pressure,” the India skipper added.

IND vs ENG: ‘Proud’ Rohit lauds young squad but wants more from batters after Vizag Test win

Former England opener Alastair Cook has termed India's Shubman Gill as a 'serious talent' after the youngster scored a sublime century on day 3 (Feb 4) of the second Test against England in Vizag. Gill's hundred came at a time when the batter was facing a lot of criticism for not being able to convert starts into big scores. His 104, however, showed the promise and talent the youngster possesses.&nbsp;

"Gill played beautifully. He has serious talent… and there was probably quite a lot of pressure on his shoulders. At the World Cup [in India], all the billboards were of Kohli, but he’s the next one they want to step into his shoes," said Cook while speaking to TNT Sports.

"That’s a big thing to have the pressure of a country the size of India on your shoulders. As a young talent, that’s something that the likes of Tendulkar and Kohli have dealt with… and he now has to learn to deal with it," the former England skipper added.

Gill's century helped India post 255 in their second innings, which coupled with their first innings lead of 143, gave England a daunting target of 399 runs to win the second Test match. Former England batter Alastair Cook lauds young Shubman Gill for 'carrying pressure of India on shoulders'

India batter Shubman Gill has lauded support from skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid along with batting coach Vikram Rathour to keep believing in him. Gill's comments come after he ended a 11-month drought with a century on day three on Sunday (Feb 4) on the second Test against England in Vizag.

Gill's innings gave India a substantial lead in the second innings, setting the visitors a target of 399 to win the match.

England veteran James Anderson, however, was confident of England being able to chase the target on day four itself. "It makes it very clear to everyone that we will try to do it tomorrow. I know there are 180 overs left in the game, but we will try to do it in 60 or 70,” Anderson said at the press conference after day three. “That's the way we play, and we saw that tonight with Rehan [Ahmed] going out and playing his shots. He wanted to get out there and chase those runs down, even tonight. We have set our stall out, tomorrow will be no different, we will play the same way we have the last two years," he added. England need 332 runs on day 4 after finishing on 67/1 on day 3.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Shubman Gill not to take field on day 4 due to injury, informs BCCI

England look comfortable in the 399-run chase in the second Test in Vizag, with their scorecard reading 67 for one after stumps on day three. Earlier, India batter Shubman Gill hogged all the limelight with his third Test hundred as India posted 255 in the second innings. England’s Tom Hartley again starred with the ball in hand, picking four wickets, while young Rehan Ahmed returned with three to his name.

Day three began with India losing both openers to James Anderson. While the veteran seamer clean bowled Rohit off a jaffa, he got Jaiswal edged and caught in the slip cordon.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer - two underfire batters in the lineup, made the most of their chances, adding 81 for the third wicket. Stokes and Hartley accounted for Iyer before Rehan picked debutant Rajat Patidar on nine, breaking India’s momentum.

Meanwhile, batting alongside Axar Patel, Gill approached his first hundred across formats this year and completed the three-digit score soon after lunch.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: England stay alive in chase after Gill’s heroics on day 3

Shubman Gill is struggling in Tests. Since the West Indies Tests, he has been batting at No. 3. However, he has had an unimpressive run so far. The right-hander has scores of 13, 18, 6, 10, 29*, 2, 26, 36, 10, 23, 0 in his last 10 innings. On Day 1 of the second Test between India and England, on Friday (Feb 2),&nbsp;Gill departed for 34 (46) to continue his poor run of form.

Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar opened up on Gill's Test struggles prior to&nbsp;the second Test in Vizag. Talking to ESPN Cricinfo, Manjrekar said, "Shubman Gill, how does he react to his failures? He needs to do something about his defence if he wants to be the prolific run-getter in the team at the Test level, both against swing and spin."

“That’s a cause for worry and that’s something that won’t be solved easily. These are uncontrollable for the team management, and the selectors,” he further opined.

Manjrekar then shifted focus to Shreyas Iyer, who was also short of runs and fell flat in the first Test versus England in Hyderabad. "Shreyas Iyer seems to want to play the modern way, which is about hitting the way out of trouble, so be it. We saw the English batters take a safer approach to be aggressive."

He added, "He’s got to find one because just lofting balls down the pitch or towards mid-wicket is a lot more risky than playing the reverse sweeps and the switch reverse sweeps."

The Indian team opted to bat first on Day 1 of the Vizag Test on Friday morning. They are eyeing a big score to challenge the English side after losing the first Test in a shocking fashion by 28 runs. While Gill departed early, Iyer will target&nbsp;a big score to shrug off his poor form.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour has backed youngsters to come good in the ongoing Test series against England. The comments come on the back of India's loss by 28 runs in the first Test in Hyderabad. Rathour specifically took names of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer while addressing a press conference in Vizag ahead of the second Test match which starts on February 2.

“There are young batters in our team who have not played much Test cricket. So, we need to be a bit patient with them. Batters like (Shubman) Gill, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and (Shreyas) Iyer will eventually start getting big runs, I’m sure of it,” Rathour said on Wednesday (Jan 31).

“There’s a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it,” he added. “They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions. So, the batters need to possess that intelligence as to which is the best or safest shot on the surface.”

“Could they have batted with more discipline? Maybe they could have. That’s what they need to decide and come up with their plans.”&nbsp;

“But, they need to score runs by playing their shots, as you need to back your strengths. Batting is always about scoring runs. It’s not about not getting out but how many runs you put on the board,” noted the batting coach further.

Among the three batters named by Rathour, Jaiswal had the best performance as he scored a quickfire 80 in India's first inning before managing 15 in the second innings. Iyer and Gill, on the other hand, failed miserably, managing just 48 and 23 runs in the Test match across both innings.&nbsp;

India batting coach Vikram Rathour backs young batters to come good after first Test loss

India lost to England by 28 runs in the first Test, of the five-match series, in Hyderabad on Day 4 on Sunday (Jan 28). After the shocking loss, despite India taking a 190-run lead in first innings, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has shared a suggestion for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. Jaffer feels India need to tweak their opening combination and advised captain Rohit to drop down to No. 3.

Since the West Indies Tests, held in mid-2023, Shubman Gill voluntarily opted to drop down to No. 3 from the opening slot and his spot was taken by Yashasvi Jaiswal. While Jaiswal and Rohit have stitched some big stands already, Jaffer feels Gill is not suited for No. 3 and, hence, asked for Hitman to take Gill's spot, allowing the two youngsters to form an exciting opening pair.

Jaffer wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "Gill and Jaiswal should open and Rohit should bat at no. 3 in the 2nd test in my opinion. Waiting to bat for his turn isn't helping Shubman, it's better he opens the innings. Rohit plays spin really well, so batting at no. 3 should not worry him too much."

BCCI Awards: Ex-coach Ravi Shastri to receive lifetime achievement award, Gill to bag men's cricketer honour

Rohit Sharma-led India thrashed Afghanistan by six wickets in pursuit of 159 in the three-match T20I series opener on Thursday (Jan 11) in Mohali. The match marked the return of Rohit in the shortest format, having played his last T20I during the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final (where India lost to England in Adelaide). While Shivam Dube's all-round heroics sealed the game for India, captain Rohit didn't make a mark with the bat as he fell for 0 (2).

Rohit was involved in a mix-up with opening partner Shubman Gill (23) in the second ball of the run-chase. Hitman attacked&nbsp;Fazalhaq Farooqi on the second ball, by dancing down the track, and the ball raced towards mid-off. While Rohit ran and reached the non-striker's end, Gill remained at the same end and led to the skipper's departure. As a result, Rohit was livid at Gill and gave him a piece of his mind.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit reacted to the run-out and said, "These things happen. When it happens you feel frustrated, you want to be out there and score runs for the team. Everything will not go your way. We won the game, that's more important. I wanted Gill to carry on, unfortunately got out after playing a very good little innings."

After Rohit, Gill made a brisk 23 but couldn't capitalise on the start as India were reeling at 28-2. Dube (40-ball 60 not out) and Jitesh Sharma (31) piled on the runs for India to take them past the finish line in 17.3 overs.&nbsp;

On the team's overall outing, Hitman added, "Lot of positives. Shivam Dube, the way Jitesh batted, Tilak as well and then Rinku is in good form as well. We want to keep trying different things - try and bowl our bowlers in different situations of the game, like you saw today, Washi bowled the 19th over. We want to challenge ourselves in the areas we are slightly uncomfortable with and the bowlers are not used to that. We want to try and do that. Keeping all of those things in mind, we'll try and do whatever is possible but not at the cost of the game. We want to make sure that we come out on top and play the game well. All in all, today was a good day for us."

Opting to bowl first, India rode on two-fers from Mukesh Kumar and Axar Patel to restrict Afghanistan at 158 for 5 with Mohammad Nabi top-scoring with a fine 42. In reply, India ended the chase courtesy of Dube's blitz. The second and penultimate game takes place on Sunday (Jan 14) in Indore.

<h2>What was the incident</h2>

On the second ball of the Indian innings with bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi bowling, Rohit’s shot went down to the mid-off fielder while he was deep. Seeing the opportunity, Rohit tried to steal a run and reached the non-striker's end. However, with the response from Gill, the Indian skipper was left stranded in no man’s land. The fielder threw the ball to wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz and executed the run out with&nbsp;no batter at the striker's end.

<h2>What happened in the match</h2>

Chasing 159 runs to win, the Indian team did not have the best start after they lost Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the innings. The Men in Blue then recovered with Tilak Varma (26) and Shivam Dube scoring valuable runs before the former was scalped by Azmatullah Omarzai. Dube’s impressive stint though continued at the other end as he helped India to&nbsp;win the game. He remained unbeaten on 60 off 40 deliveries which consisted of 5 fours and 2 sixes. He was helped by the impressive Jitesh Sharma who scored&nbsp;31 off 20 balls. India won the match by six wickets and now have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

For his impressive show, Dube was adjourned Player of the Match while he also scalped one wicket with the ball.

The two teams will next meet on Sunday with India standing an opportunity to win the series. The contest in Indore will also see Virat Kohli return to the T20I setup for the first time in 14 months like Rohit Sharma.

Star India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant will return to competitive cricket in 2024, more than a year after suffering a horrific road accident around&nbsp;New Year’s Eve in 2022. Pant underwent several surgeries and countless therapies to get over an almost life-taking accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, with his car crashing into roadside dividers and catching fire later on.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain shared his thoughts on Pant’s return, saying a box-office cricketer like him will hog all the limelight similarly upon his much-awaited comeback on the cricket field.

Since undergoing the knife on both knees, Pant continues to recover at home and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. With his IPL team, Delhi Capitals, announcing earlier that Pant will return to lead the side in the 17th season starting on March 22, all eyeballs will be on the left-handed batter who emerged as one of the modern-day greats in his category.

"That was such a serious accident. The whole world held its breath, and it has been a slow recovery," Hussain was quoted as saying by the ICC.&nbsp;

"You follow on social media, on my phone and the initial first walking steps to then scenes in the gym and then scenes of him playing a bit of cricket, scenes of him with Ricky (Ponting).

Nasser added during the home Ashes, he saw Ponting (DC’s head coach) texting Pant, asking about his well-being.&nbsp;

"I travelled with Ricky in the summer in the Ashes, and Ricky was texting him 'how's the progress coming along', and he is a box office cricketer,” Hussain added.

<h2>Rahul did well in Pant’s absence</h2>

Rishabh Pant’s injury saw him missing major cricketing events in 2023, with the home Australia Tests, IPL, the World Test Championship final and the 50-over World Cup.&nbsp;

Though India tried a few options in his absence, with most of them also clicking on most days, KL Rahul filling that void was a blessing for the Indian Team.

"India have done well without him (Pant) as KL has come in and been brilliant in all formats," Hussain noted.&nbsp;

"They'll continue to be brilliant. They're lucky to have both of them, but Rishabh Pant, before his injury, was box office, and hopefully, after his injury, will be box office as well,” KL added.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul has also taken up wicketkeeping duties in South Africa, with KS Bharat in the squad as a backup option.&nbsp;

Former India player Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted a key flaw in Shubman Gill’s batting approach as India prepare for the second Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. Gill, a key member of the Indian side in 2023 has found it tough to adjust to the South African conditions as Rohit Sharma's men trail 1-0 in the Test series. According to Gavaskar, Gill’s aggressive approach is not helping him and needs to stay calm in the red-ball format.

<h2>Gavsakar highlights key factor</h2>

"I think he is playing a bit too aggressively in Test cricket. There is a slight difference when you play Test cricket when compared to T20I and ODI cricket. The difference is in the ball. The red ball moves a little more than the white ball in the air and off the pitch as well. It bounces a little more too. He should keep that in mind," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"Shubman Gill started off his career so well and we praised his shots. We can only hope that he gets back into his form. Hope he trains harder and does well in the future,” the former World Cup winner added.

The 24-year-old has endured a tough outing during the Proteas tour having scored 36 runs in four innings with an average of 9. His lackluster form continued in the Centurion Test when he got out for 2 and 26 as India were crushed to an embarrassing defeat by the Proteas. Rohit Sharma’s men lost by an innings and 32 runs as their dream of winning a Test series on South African soil evaporated.

The teams will next meet on Wednesday (Jan 4) as India try to end the tour on a high in Cape Town. South Africa currently lead the two-match series 1-0 and can pocket the series with a draw. India on the other hand will have to win to level the series.

Babar Azam has reclaimed the top spot in the ICC ODI Rankings on Wednesday (Dec 20). While most white-ball-leg bound players landed in South Africa on Wednesday, star players, including Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill, are yet to join the team. Besides, seamer Deepak Chahar is also home due to personal issues, with reports suggesting his father is ill, and it remains unclear if Deepak will fly to South Africa or not.

Jadeja and Gill – part of India’s 2023 World Cup squad, went on vacation following the CWC final on December 19. While Jadeja travelled to Europe to spend time with family, Gill flew to the UK to be away from cricket for some time.

Both are said to join the Indian Team in Durban – the venue for the first T20I on Sunday (Dec 10). Jadeja is the vice-captain for three T20Is.

Meanwhile, the fit-again Deepak Chahar has also stayed home owing to illness in the family, with BCCI keeping mum on his chances of joining the team in the Rainbow Nation.

Though the sources close to the information reveal Deepak is likely to fly to South Africa sooner, the board has decided against naming any replacement in case the opposite happens.

The source added that all three, alongside a member of the support staff, have BCCI’s permission to join India’s white-ball teams in South Africa a bit late.

Besides, two selectors - SS Das and Salil Ankola, will also be with the team in South Africa to monitor performances, considering the packed schedule – including three T20Is, as many ODIs and two Tests, alongside three India A matches.

With the board picking three separate squads for all three formats, a few newcomers, some returnees and a handful of star players are named for the T20Is and ODIs.&nbsp;

On the other hand, all top players, including regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah, alongside Mohammed Shami (whose selection is subject to fitness), will return to play the Test series, starting on Boxing Day in Centurion.

While top-batter in the shortest format, Suryakumar Yadav will captain the T20I side, keeper-batter KL Rahul will lead Team India in the ODIs. Rohit will be the captain in Tests.&nbsp;

Besides, two selectors - SS Das and Salil Ankola, will also be with the team in South Africa to monitor performances, considering the packed schedule – including three T20Is, as many ODIs and two Tests, alongside three India A matches. With the board picking three separate squads for all three formats, a few newcomers, some returnees and a handful of star players are named for the T20Is and ODIs. While top-batter in the shortest format, Suryakumar Yadav will captain the T20I side, keeper-batter KL Rahul will lead Team India in the ODIs. Rohit will be the captain in Tests.

West Indies legendary batter Brian Lara has lauded Indian opener Shubman Gill. Lara feels Gill has it in him to break a plethora of records&nbsp;and labelled him&nbsp;the 'most talented batter of this generation'. In addition, Lara&nbsp;made a big claim that&nbsp;the right-hander will win many ICC tournaments&nbsp;for Team India going forward.

At present, Gill is on cloud nine as he has had a memorable run in 2023. He has been in top form across formats, especially in ODIs. He became the No. 1 ranked batter in ODIs recently and has slammed a ton in all formats as well as&nbsp;in the IPL, while playing for the Gujarat Titans (GT), in this calendar year. Last month, Gill was named the Gujarat captain after Hardik Pandya rejoined the Mumbai Indians (MI).

Speaking to Anandabazar Patrika, Lara claimed that Gill could break his record for the highest individual score in Test cricket (400).&nbsp;

<h2>'In Test cricket, he can surely go past 400'</h2>

Lara stated, "Shubman Gill can break both my records. Gill is the most talented batter in this new generation. He will rule cricket in the coming years. I believe he will go on to break many big records. He (Gill) can do it (break my records). If Gill plays County cricket then he can break my 501*. In Test cricket, he can surely go past 400."

“Shubman will score big, mark my words. Gill didn't score a century (in the World Cup) but look at the knocks he has already played. He has centuries in all formats, has smashed a double hundred in ODIs and has also played many match-winnings in the IPL. I'm sure he will win many ICC tournaments in the future,” the legendary cricketer added.

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 53 and vital runs from Jitesh Sharma and Axar Patel to post 160/8. After the series, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra opined on India's performance and made a big claim with regard to the Men in Blue's potential squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA.

Chopra feels there might be a toss-up between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill for India's T20 WC squad. Gaikwad ended as the top-scorer in the five T20Is, scoring&nbsp;223 runs&nbsp;at an average of 55.75 with a best of 123*.&nbsp;

Chopra lauded Gaikwad for being among runs and said on his YouTube channel, "Ruturaj Gaikwad - he said that he is there.
