<p>India batting coach Vikram Rathour has backed youngsters to come good in the ongoing Test series against England. The comments come on the back of India's loss by 28 runs in the first Test in Hyderabad. Rathour specifically took names of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer while addressing a press conference in Vizag ahead of the second Test match which starts on February 2.</p>

<p>“There are young batters in our team who have not played much Test cricket. So, we need to be a bit patient with them. Batters like (Shubman) Gill, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and (Shreyas) Iyer will eventually start getting big runs, I’m sure of it,” Rathour said on Wednesday (Jan 31).</p>

<p>“There’s a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it,” he added. “They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions. So, the batters need to possess that intelligence as to which is the best or safest shot on the surface.”</p>

<p>“Could they have batted with more discipline? Maybe they could have. That’s what they need to decide and come up with their plans.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“But, they need to score runs by playing their shots, as you need to back your strengths. Batting is always about scoring runs. It’s not about not getting out but how many runs you put on the board,” noted the batting coach further.</p>

<p>Among the three batters named by Rathour, Jaiswal had the best performance as he scored a quickfire 80 in India's first inning before managing 15 in the second innings. Iyer and Gill, on the other hand, failed miserably, managing just 48 and 23 runs in the Test match across both innings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India, who currently trail 0-1 in the five-match series, will be aiming to equal it in the second Test.</p>

So, we need to be a bit patient with them. Batters like (Shubman) Gill, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and (Shreyas) Iyer will eventually start getting big runs, I’m sure of it,” Rathour said on Wednesday (Jan 31). “There’s a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it,” he added. “They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions. <p>"I believe Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli batted on a different planet. This was not the Wankhede or Delhi where the conditions are easy throughout the innings," Gambhir told host broadcaster Star Sports.&nbsp;</p>

World Cup 2023: Gautam Gambhir says this batting duo should be hailed more than Rohit and Gill

<p>It required perhaps the ‘ball of the tournament’ thus far from South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj to dismiss India opener Shubman Gill in the ongoing high-octane World Cup clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. With India on top, having scored more than 90 despite losing captain Rohit Sharma, Keshav, in his first over, bowled a jaffa to stun the 60,000-plus crowd and clean bowled&nbsp;Gill.</p>

<p>The unplayable delivery ball, pitched on the middle-leg stump, turned square, removed the bails from the off stump.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such was the surprising factor that India waited for the replays to confirm the ball did hit the wickets, and it was not Quinton de Kock’s gloved that removed the bails.</p>

However, he had to ride his luck against the Kiwis when he survived a close call at the non-striker's end. Fortunately for Gill, he was in the right place and avoided run out to help India build another 50-run stand for the opening wicket. India and New Zealand are playing in the ODI World Cup for just the second time in 20 years with revenge on the cards for the Men in Blue having lost in 2019.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened with Gill?</strong></h2>

<p>On the final ball of the fifth over, a straight drive from Rohit Sharma went towards bowler Trent Boult and appeared to have struck his hand before hitting the stump. With the ball hitting the stumps Gill appeared to have his bat outside the crease as New Zealand were convinced he was run out. The appeals saw a standing umpire call for a review as New Zealand looked to have drawn first blood.</p>

<p>However, much to the relief of Gill and Indian fans, the ball appeared to have taken no deflection of the hand. Later it was also confirmed from the replays that Gill was back in his crease in time to avoid any further controversy. India’s score at that time was 32/0 in five overs.</p>

<p>At the time of writing, India did lose Rohit Sharma for 46 off 40 with the scoreboard reading 75/1 after 12 overs.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened in the New Zealand innings?</strong></h2>

<p>Mohammed Shami, playing in his first match in the ODI World Cup proved a point as he was on the show with India restricting New Zealand to 273 in their 50 overs. Shami grabbed his opportunity with both hands and scalped Will Young (17) on the first ball of his spell. He also played an important role in breaking the Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) partnership getting the former out when they had stitched 159 runs for the third wicket.</p>

<p>Shami would return to haunt the Kiwis when he scalped Mitchell Santner (1) and Matt Henry (0) on back-to-back balls. He was on a hat-trick in the 48th over but could not get over the line to join the elite company. He would later dismiss the impressive Mitchell with Virat Kohli catching him in the deep and completing the five-for. It is the third time he has taken a five-for in ODI cricket and continues to impress in his third World Cup stint.</p>

<p>Backed by the impressive Ravindra and Mitchell, New Zealand set a 274-run target for India to chase, despite being 19/2 at one stage. The duo was instrumental for the Kiwis to reach the total before they once again collapsed. New Zealand recovered well after the early onslaught and were 178/2 before losing way. Will Young (17) and Glenn Phillips were the only other batters to get in double figures for New Zealand.</p>

<p>“Definitely, I think this is one of the things which was talked about, especially leading up to the World Cup, that we were not chasing that well, those big totals,” Gill said as reported by the ICC&nbsp;after India's win over Bangladesh on October 19 in Pune.</p>

<p>“I think having won all the four matches while chasing, I think it's a great way to have that momentum with us in those big games that we'll have moving forward.</p>

<p>“I think there's a fine line between sometimes being too aggressive or going in the shell, especially playing big games.</p>

<p>“But I think the way they play, the way their mindset is playing those big games in the World Cup is what I try to learn from them,” added the opening batter.</p>

<p>Going back to&nbsp;Rohit’s comments on Gill on the eve of the Pakistan match, Shubman was 100% fit, but the captain and the team management were concerned about things going wrong or a relapse of fever on the match-day, thus sticking with 99% claim instead of declaring him fit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bigger question at that point was how Gill would be able to endure 100 overs on the field, having recovered from the fever very recently. The right-handed batter had two days – Thursday and Friday to get back to the ground and prepare for the game.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As first reported by Cricbuzz, Dr Sivarama Kannan - the physician responsible for Gill's speedy recovery, explained what happened behind the scenes and how he managed to recover so quickly.</p>

<p>"A young person, an athlete, usually recovers well. He was fully cooperative and attentive. He obliged to whatever we said," the doctor said.&nbsp;<br />

"He came on the evening of the India-Australia match (October 8) and went back to the hotel the next evening. We had our male nurse, one person stationed there to give him timely injections and IV fluids,” the doctor added.</p>

<p>"He came to us on the second day of his illness... We didn't allow his body temperature to rise. We continuously administered medication to ensure that the fever didn't escalate, and we maintained his hydration to prevent the disease from taking hold."</p>

<p>"When the platelet count dropped below 50,000-60,000, we decided to admit him to the hospital. This was during India's match against Australia. The next morning, his platelet count dropped further, but by Monday evening, it began to increase, so we shifted him back to the hotel,” he added.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, Gill’s platelet count surpassed 100,000, which is when Dr. Kannan, discharged him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The following day, Tuesday, October 10, his platelet count increased, and it continued to rise on the subsequent day. By Wednesday morning, I informed him that he was fit to travel as his count had gone beyond one lakh. That afternoon, he left for Ahmedabad,” the doctor detailed.</p>

<p>Gill joined the Indian Team in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and trained for two days before the team management decided to play him at the last moment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gill scored four fours in his 11-ball 16-run-stay at the crease before he got caught in the point region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India will next face Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday (Oct 19).</p>
