The veteran number three batter for India has found his Midas touch in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, whacking a brilliant 234 for Saurashtra – his 18th first-class double hundred, which is the most by an Indian. Since being dropped from the Indian Test Team last year, Pujara returned to the English County, playing for Sussex, for whom he scored two tons this season.

Not many have dominated the Aussie pace attack as Pujara did since his first trip Down Under in 2014. However, his best came four years later, when he scored a brilliant 123 in the first innings in Adelaide, helping India put up a fighting total and eventually win the match. His 521-run tally across seven innings – 201 more than the second-best batter (Rishabh Pant), was a testament to his batting prowess.

With the final Test at the SCG ending in a draw, the game in which Pujara hit 193, his best score Down Under, India created history by beating Australia at their home in Tests for the first time.

Two years later, the spirited Indian Team achieved a similar result, winning the four-match series 2-1, becoming the first Indian Team to beat Australia twice Down Under.

Looking beyond his marathon knocks against the Oz all these years, Pujara’s greatest efforts included his innings in the third Test in Sydney, wherein he scored twin fifties, but that’s not even the best part about it. While Pujara batted 176 balls in the first innings, he eventually broke the camel’s back with his gritty 205-ball 77 in the second innings, batting for endless hours and blocking everything coming his way.

What was the cherry on the top? The blows he took hurt him badly, but the Aussies more, who, for the second time in two series, failed to break Pujara’s concentration and defence.

With the stars aligning for Pujara just in time for the Border-Gavaskar series, we could see him return to the Test side for his last tour Down Under.

<h3>What happens to Shubman Gill then?</h3>

For everything that he has done thus far, which is no short of exceptional on several grounds, India must find a way to fit Gill into the XI for the Perth Test. Outside of the top three, which would belong to Rohit, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Pujara should he be picked, Gill’s best chance is probably at lower order, at five or six. That, however, would also depend on KL Rahul’s form heading into the Australian tour.

In an ideal situation, Gill could fit in at five, just after Kohli and before Sarfaraz Khan or Rishabh Pant, though India is unlikely to play Khan so low at seven, putting his spot in jeopardy.

In another scenario, Gill could play ahead of Jaiswal at the top, his preferred position, and having some experience batting there Down Under, Gill could fancy his chances of doing well; with that, he can even press his case for a permanent top-order spot when Rohit bids farewell to this format.

Considering all variables, Gill might have to fight hard for his spot in the XI if the BCCI selectors decide to bring Pujara for the BGT.

However, for now, all eyes would be on Pujara’s selection, and who knows, with that, India could benefit and do an unthinkable – beat Australia thrice at home.

Kumble also spoke on&nbsp;how Gill at No. 3 will be crucial for India's success in Australia&nbsp;and stated that his playing style is a lot different than Rahul Dravid and Pujara (who owned that slot for a long period before him).

He mentioned, "You said, for the last 25 years, there have been only two players who have been consistently playing (at one down) and it's a tough role. Although he was out of touch, having failed to score a fifty in the past 12 innings in the lead-up to that, Gill slammed a stunning hundred in the second innings of the Vizag Test.&nbsp;

“The talk came from him. He felt that No 3 was an ideal position for him to bat, and the management group backed him. It was his decision, which was backed by Rahul, myself and Rohit, and he turned it around in the England series,” Rathour continued.

The former batting coach also shared what he thought of Gill when he first saw him bat in the nets.

“When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. "I really enjoyed playing today. It was an amazing experience with Shubman. Of course, whenever I play for India, I feel proud. We were thinking about how to finish the game and make sure to win it for the team. The only thought running through our mind was to get the game over with and win by no wickets lost," Jaiswal said in response to&nbsp;a question&nbsp;from the Harare crowd on Saturday (Jul 13).

In the 15th over, Gill reached his fifty on the first ball with a double and hit a six next ball. Jaiswal got the strike on the fifth ball of the over and hit a six as well - leaving India two runs to win and Jaiswal on 89.

India won the match on the second ball of the 16th over with Jaiswal hitting four after Gill took a single on the first ball.

India also won the final match of the five-match series on Sunday (Jul 14) and wrapped the series with a 4-1 victory.&nbsp;

Gill emerged as the highest run scorer in the series, scoring 170 runs across five matches while Jaiswal was second on the list with 141 runs.

Among bowlers, Mukesh Kumar and Washington Sundar took eight wickets each.

Of all the cricketing records that once looked impossible to break, scoring 400 in a Test inning is the closest to being broken; not that it's easy, but considering how the game has evolved over the years, it looks likely to happen sooner. And the one who held the record for two decades now, Brian Charles Lara, feels it’s about time that&nbsp;someone breaks it. However, not just anyone but two Indian batters – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, are the ones he thinks will surpass that number in Tests.

Brian Lara broke his (375) and Matthew Hayden’s record (385) to become the first and only man to date to register 400 runs in an innings in a Test. He did it against his favourite opponents, England, during the Antigua Test in 2004. No player since came close other than former Sri Lanka Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 374 against South Africa during the marathon stand with Kumar Sangakkara in 2006 in Colombo.

Twenty years later, Lara admits several players during the past two decades, including Virender Sehwag and Sanath Jayasuriya, challenged it, but none could break it.&nbsp;However, he now feels two Indian batters have it in them to get past 400 in a Test inning.

"There were players in my time, who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark - Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players," Lara said in a chat with The Daily Mail.

Although he also mentioned how just attacking batters have a chance at this shot, he mentioned the English duo of Zak Crawley and Harry Brook, who can also push for this record.&nbsp;

<h2>Top-order batters have a chance</h2>

In today’s age and game, several players have shown potential to become future greats in Tests, but going by what’s happening around, only top-order batters look like someone who can get this job done.

Talking of Jaiswal and Gill - both have immense potential to score massive runs up front, with the young left-hander showing promise during the England Tests earlier this year. With two tons, including a maiden double hundred and three fifties, Jaiswal topped the runs chart with 712 runs in five Tests.

However, Gill has shown his skill during several overseas series in the past two years, with his match-winning knock against Australia during the famous 2021 Gabba Test being the highlight.&nbsp;

Of all the cricketing records that once looked impossible to break, scoring 400 in a Test inning is the closest to being broken; not that it's easy, but considering how the game has evolved over the years, it looks likely to happen sooner. And the one who held the record for two decades now, Brian Charles Lara, feels it’s about time that someone breaks it. However, not just anyone but two Indian batters – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, are the ones he thinks will surpass that number in Tests. Brian Lara broke his (375) and Matthew Hayden’s record (385) to become the first and only man to date to register 400 runs in an innings in a Test. He did it against his favourite opponents, England, during the Antigua Test in 2004. No player since came close other than former Sri Lanka Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 374 against South Africa during the marathon stand with Kumar Sangakkara in 2006 in Colombo. Twenty years later, Lara admits several players during the past two decades, including Virender Sehwag and Sanath Jayasuriya, challenged it, but none could break it. However, he now feels two Indian batters have it in them to get past 400 in a Test inning. "There were players in my time, who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark - Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players," Lara said in a chat with The Daily Mail. Although he also mentioned how just attacking batters have a chance at this shot, he mentioned the English duo of Zak Crawley and Harry Brook, who can also push for this record. Top-order batters have a chance In today’s age and game, several players have shown potential to become future greats in Tests, but going by what’s happening around, only top-order batters look like someone who can get this job done. Talking of Jaiswal and Gill - both have immense potential to score massive runs up front, with the young left-hander showing promise during the England Tests earlier this year. With two tons, including a maiden double hundred and three fifties, Jaiswal topped the runs chart with 712 runs in five Tests. However, Gill has shown his skill during several overseas series in the past two years, with his match-winning knock against Australia during the famous 2021 Gabba Test being the highlight. Dion Myers (65 not out) and Clive Madande (37) then added 77 runs for the sixth wicket but it was too little too late. Sundar broke the partnership and finished with the figures of 3/15 in four overs and won the Player of the Match award.

Upon being asked if it was disappointing to not score 200, Gill said: "Did look like that, but the wicket was a bit double paced, the odd ball was gripping and it was not easy to hit the length ball. We just wanted to keep hitting the length with the ball as well."

Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza said: &nbsp;"We gave away 20 runs extra. We still have problems at the top, but we are backing the boys. I know they are trying and once they do, we will come good again. We have tried 15 different [opening] partners in a year and a half. There is a lot of cricket going in the country. We are trying to do everything. It is time we players including me take the responsibility."

The fourth match of the series will be played on Saturday, July 13.

Abhishek and Gill are close friends and have grown up together, having played junior level and Under-19 cricket since. With both playing for India now, Abhishek admitted every time he plays with Gill’s bat, he scores runs. The left-handed batter said this has happened even in the IPL, with his outing in his second India game being the latest example.

Meanwhile, on his debut in the first match, Abhishek got out on a duck but made a stunning comeback with his maiden international hundred in the next.&nbsp;

“This has been going on since Under-14 cricket. Whenever I have played with his bat, I’ve done well. I want to tell everyone that even today (on Sunday), I played with his bat, which wasn’t an easy task. It’s my last option for a comeback. Special thanks to him for lending me his bat on time,” Abhishek said in a video shared by BCCI.

“It had happened in the IPL as well. Today was no exception as it went well as it usually happens,” Abhishek added.

<h2>Yuvraj lauds Abhishek</h2>

A four-ball duck in the first T20I might be disappointing for Abhishek, but not for his mentor and one of India’s greatest match-winners, Yuvraj Singh. Abhishek said after the first match, he spoke with Yuvraj on the phone, and instead of the India veteran scolding him for playing a careless shot, he lauded his beginning, saying it was a good start to his career.&nbsp;

However, Abhishek credited Yuvraj for putting in the hard work and guiding him to the right path, which led to his India call-up.&nbsp;

“Very proud. Well done. You deserve it. Many more to come. This is just a start,” Yuvraj said to Abhishek as revealed by him.

“I spoke to him yesterday, and he said, I don’t know why, but he was very happy when I was out on zero. He said that’s a good start. I think he must be very proud of me just like my family.

“I am playing at this level because of him. The hard work he has put on me. For the past two-three years he has really worked hard not only on my cricket but even off the field as well,” the 22-year-old added.&nbsp;
