India's Test stars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill failed in their Ranji Trophy return, getting out cheaply. Watch this report for more details!

Flop show by India Test stars on Ranji Trophy return

Kris Srikkanth, former Indian captain and chief selector, slammed Shubman Gill after his flop run in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy edition between India and Australia, in Australia. Srikkanth called Gill an 'overrated cricketer' and suggested two names who can replace him. Srikkanth feels Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, and Tamil Nadu-born Sai Sudharshan can replace Gill going ahead.

"I've always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer, but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

The former Indian captain, and 1983 World Cup winner, further remarked, "When Gill is getting such a long rope, some people might wonder why even players like Suryakumar Yadav couldn't have been given a longer run in Tests. Suryakumar didn't have the best start in Tests, but he has the technique and ability. Yet, the selectors and management have boxed him into being a white-ball specialist. So now, fresh talent needs to be looked at."

India batters Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma lost their wickets on two extremely unplayable balls on Day 2 (Dec 7) of the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in the second innings. Gill was cleaned up by a full ball of Mitchell Stars while Rohit was bowled by a beauty bowled by Pat Cummins under the lights in Adelaide. Rohit, who was batting down the order, was tentatively poking a ball on the off stump when a Cummins delivery left his bat ever so little and hit the top of his off stump. Gill was batting nicely on 28 off 29 balls when Starc sent a searing full ball which took 'banana swing' before crashing onto Gill's middle stumps. BGT 2024-25: India vs PM XI | Shubman Gill, Harshit Rana star in pink-ball practice game

India batter Shubman Gill returned to the nets for the first time since breaking his thumb in the lead-up to the Perth Test against Australia in BGT. Gill admitted feeling disappointed about missing the series opener but revealed he is happy about his recovery ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, starting December 6. At the start of India’s training session in Canberra on Friday (Nov 29), Gill faced throwdowns in the nets before opening arms in the extended session.

"He is batting right now, and our physio will evaluate him, and I will know his status after that," Team India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said on Friday afternoon. "But from what I have seen, he is looking comfortable batting, and he looks like he can bat [in a match]. He is batting in the indoor nets, and we will know if he can play the practice match or not."

Gill also reflected on his first outing since getting injured during India’s simulation at WACA, saying he just wanted to get the feel of it and see how his injury is reacting.

Speaking on BCCI.TV, Gill said, “It was my first day, and I was just trying to get a feel to be honest, see how the injury is reacting if there was any kind of soreness. But it actually went much better than what I and Kamlesh bhai expected. I am very happy with that”.

Disappointed to miss out on Perth Test

Gill made his Test debut Down Under the last time at the MCG. He played a handy knock in the final Test in Brisbane to help India breach Gabba fortress and win the second Test series in Australia. While he played at three venues, including at the SCG in Sydney, Gill is yet to play at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

“When I got to know about my injury, for the first couple of days, I was quite low and disappointed. Perth was the only venue where I didn’t play when we came the last time, and I was looking forward to playing there at such an iconic venue. The way we played that game, at the end of the day, I was very happy,” Gill added.

He is batting in the indoor nets, and we will know if he can play the practice match or not." Speaking on BCCI.TV, Gill said, “It was my first day, and I was just trying to get a feel to be honest, see how the injury is reacting if there was any kind of soreness. But it actually went much better than what I and Kamlesh bhai expected. I am very happy with that”. Disappointed to miss out on Perth Test Gill made his Test debut Down Under the last time at the MCG. Shubman Gill hits the nets for the first time since his thumb injury that forced him to miss the Perth Test.
Indian top-order batter Shubman Gill will likely miss the second Test match against Australia starting next Friday (Dec 6) as the visitors look to extend their lead in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. BGT: Morne Morkel provides key update on Gill's fitness as batter faces race against time for Perth Test

Team India will be without their star batters, regular captain Rohit Sharma and new number three Shubman Gill, for the Perth Test against Australia starting November 22. While Rohit confirmed his unavailability for the first BGT Test due to personal reasons, Gill will be out with a broken thumb. The visitors, however, have identified their replacements for the series opener, with reports of Harshit Rana making his Test debut at the Optus Stadium also doing rounds.

India was jolted with a double blow on Sunday (Nov 17), when Rohit and Gill were declared unavailable for selection for the first Test. Though the management will play KL Rahul at the top alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, sources close to the information informed Times of India (TOI) of Devdutt Padikkal playing at number.

Padikkal was part of the India-A squad that played two shadow matches against Australia-A, losing both, with reserve players and potential Test hopefuls pressing their cases for Team India's return.
Rana set for Test debut

In Rohit’s absence, ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead India in the first Test in Perth. Considering the conditions on offer, with steep bounce and carry being prime parameters, Harshit Rana, who impressed everyone, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, with his performance in the simulation game, might get his maiden Test cap.

India’s pace attack for the first game could consist of Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep Singh and Harshit Rana, with one of the three spin-bowling all-rounders (Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar) retaining the number seven spot. Though fellow all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy might get a game sometime in this marquee Test series, four-seamers could highlight India’s bowling attack for the opener.

Meanwhile, Rana made headlines with his star performances for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, picking 19 wickets and helping his team lift the trophy for the third time.

KL Rahul’s return to nets boosts India’s morale ahead of BGT opener in Perth

Injury concerns and the unavailability of star players have rocked India ahead of the Perth Test against Australia starting November 22. Shubman Gill broke his thumb while fielding in the slips in the WACA simulation game, likely ruling him out of the BGT opener; at the same time, KL Rahul also suffered a blow to his right elbow, putting his participation in the first Test in jeopardy. Besides, no official word on Rohit Sharma’s availability is made public.

With misery piling on the touring side, which lately suffered a maiden Test series whitewash at home at the hands of New Zealand, are left with no options but to ask either of two India-A players, Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan, to stay back as covers for the Perth game should all three abovementioned players remain unavailable for selection.

Devdutt and Sai were part of two India-A matches against Australia-A, which the visitors lost, and played the simulation game in Perth. With the rest of India-A players, barring the three travelling reserves for BGT - Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar, flying home on November 17, the selectors have reported asking one of the top-order batters to link with the main squad ahead of the Perth match.

For backup, India already has uncapped Abhimanyu Easwaran in the Test squad for the Australia series.

"The final call will be with the coach, captain and selectors, but there is a strong possibility of management asking one specialist top-order batter to stay back for the series opener. Abhimanyu Easwaran is already there, but one of Sai or Devdutt could well stay back too," a source close to the development said, as quoted by Times of India (TOI).

Tough call to make for selectors

Padikkal, the left-handed batter, seemed to have impressed chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who has been tracking his game since his Test debut against England early this year. In his lone outing in Dharamsala, Padikkal scored 65 and 88 versus Australia-A in the second innings of the first unofficial Test in Mackay.

On the other hand, Sai has been in some form. The left-handed batter scored a double hundred in the Ranji Trophy for Tamil Nadu in the leadup to India-A matches, where he notched an impressive century in the second innings of the first Test against Australia-A.

Sai also hammered a ton in the Duleep Trophy and for Surrey in the English County earlier.

ALSO READ: West Indies restore pride with win in high-scoring thriller against England in 4th T20I Devdutt and Sai were part of two India-A matches against Australia-A, which the visitors lost, and played the simulation game in Perth. Tough call to make for selectors Padikkal, the left-handed batter, seemed to have impressed chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who has been tracking his game since his Test debut against England early this year. (With inputs from agencies)

BGT 2024/25: Shubman Gill suffers finger injury while fielding, doubtful for opening contest in Perth

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has picked three pacers and two all-rounders in his India playing XI for the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22. With regular captain Rohit Sharma’s availability status for the first game remaining unclear, the selectors and team management are looking to put KL Rahul or Abhimanyu Easwaran in his place, but Shastri, under whom India won Down Under twice, differs.

Rahul, Easwaran and spare keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel were part of the India-A XI for the second unofficial Test against Australia-A, with both openers failing miserably across two outings. Easwaran too was not among runs in the first game. Jurel, however, was the only silver lining among the BGT-bound batters at the MCG, scoring twin fifties and pressing his case for a spot in the playing XI.

Meanwhile, Rahul suffered an elbow injury on day one of the WACA simulation game, retiring hurt and playing no further part in the game. Though that comes as a scare for the touring team, who would need a specialist to play at the top alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shastri has thrown a new name in the mix, a player already part of the playing XI.

"It's horses for courses in many ways. Most of the team will pick themselves, but there'll be one or two cases where you might have to just go and dig deep and go with gut feeling," Shastri said while speaking on ‘The ICC Review’.

"You can push Shubman (Gill) back up the order, and he has opened in the past in Australia. Otherwise, you'll have to then make an alternative. Easwaran hasn't done that well (for India-A in Australia). But it's how he's batting in the nets, how Rahul is batting in the nets. But that Shubman Gill option is also there,” Shastri said of Jaiswal’s new opening partner in Tests.

Rahul down to number three

Ahead of departing for Australia, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media in Mumbai, shedding light on who could replace Rohit at the top for the Perth Test should he remain unavailable for selection. Hinting at it could be KL Rahul, Gautam said players like Rahul can bat anywhere in the lineup, something Shastri agrees on.

He said regardless of his form, KL has performed in Australia before and with his feet moving nicely, he can take up that number three slot.

"Sometimes runs are not important, but if a player is moving well, and if the feet are moving nicely, and you try and understand his (KL Rahul) game, and you realize if he has the game for those conditions if he has the right kind of shots for those kinds of pitches. These are the things you've got to look at when you start picking a side overseas," he said.

"I would be watching them like a hawk in the nets, the batters and the bowlers because for me as a bowler, rhythm is important. And as a batter, again, tempo and rhythm is important,” Shastri continued.

Meanwhile, Shastri’s India XI for the Perth Test reads –

Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja/Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj

BGT: Ravi Shastri picks three seamers, two all-rounders in India’s XI for Perth Test against Australia

Team India added 109 runs in the first session on day two of the third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai but lost Rishabh Pant on a well-made 60. The hosts cut the deficit to 40, as their scorecard read 195 for five in 43 overs at lunch. Like Pant, Shubman Gill also completed his fifty, cementing his place at number three in this format.

India began day two on a quieter note, with Gill and Pant taking time to settle down. The left-handed keeper-batter unleashed soon after, with the pair targeting Ajaz Patel, who accounted for two wickets late on day one to dent India’s momentum.

While Pant took the attack to the spinner, launching sixes against his flighted deliveries, Gill kept finding gaps at will off Glenn Phillips and Patel.

At a point when they put on the fifth gear, Gill miscued one straight to deep long-on, only for the substitute fielder Mark Chapman to drop his catch on 45. The right-handed batter made most of this chance and completed another fifty batting at his new position.

New Zealand then introduced leg-spinner Ish Sodhi to the attack, who trapped Pant, plumb in the front on 60 soon after to put India’s back against the wall. Instead of sending Sarfaraz Khan in at number seven, India sent Ravindra Jadeja, continuing the left-right combination.

What’s next for India?

India is running a lost race here, having surrendered the home Test series to New Zealand for the first time in 12 years. However, the only silver lining for the hosts would be to win this Test, saving themselves from the embarrassment of getting whitewashed at home in Tests for the first time.

With India trailing by 40 runs, they need a handsome partnership between Gill and Jadeja to take the lead and pile on it, putting pressure back on the Kiwis.

For India to take advantage of this situation, they must take a lead of over 100 runs; given Sarfaraz, Ashwin and Sundar are yet to bat, they are in for a long day with the bat in hand.

Meanwhile, considering the pitch on offer will assist the spinners, the Indian spin trio of Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar would be licking their lips over the same in the second innings.

IND vs NZ 2024, 3rd Test, Day 2: India dominate first session but lose Rishabh Pant

Cheteshwar Pujara is a Test cricket giant all across, let alone for India. The closest thing to the great Rahul Dravid is him, and ironically, his batting position, technique, temperament, style of play and ability to tire the opposition are similar to that of ‘The Wall'. With the new-look Indian Team ready to roar Down Under, they somewhere, and for some reason, need Pujara back playing at number three ahead of Shubman Gill, a Test star in the making.

Gill hasn’t done anything wrong. A fantastic ODI opener has found his mojo in the shortest format lately but has yet to cement his place in the Test side; more so for his new position, with him replacing Pujara at number three since the WTC Final last year, Gill has been far from the threat he possessed as an opener.

However, with the captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal certain to take up the opener’s slot for the marquee Test series, Gill’s only chance of playing each of the five Tests is to bat at number three – a position head coach Gautam Gambhir would fancy him to succeed at, but that’s too big a risk to take knowing the stakes – the spot in the 2025 WTC Final.

Since being dropped from the Indian Test Team last year, Pujara returned to the English County, playing for Sussex, for whom he scored two tons this season.

Pujara – a monster batter in Australia

Not many have dominated the Aussie pace attack as Pujara did since his first trip Down Under in 2014. However, his best came four years later, when he scored a brilliant 123 in the first innings in Adelaide, helping India put up a fighting total and eventually win the match. His 521-run tally across seven innings – 201 more than the second-best batter (Rishabh Pant), was a testament to his batting prowess.

With the final Test at the SCG ending in a draw, the game in which Pujara hit 193, his best score Down Under, India created history by beating Australia at their home in Tests for the first time.

Two years later, the spirited Indian Team achieved a similar result, winning the four-match series 2-1, becoming the first Indian Team to beat Australia twice Down Under.

Looking beyond his marathon knocks against the Oz all these years, Pujara’s greatest efforts included his innings in the third Test in Sydney, wherein he scored twin fifties, but that’s not even the best part about it. While Pujara batted 176 balls in the first innings, he eventually broke the camel’s back with his gritty 205-ball 77 in the second innings, batting for endless hours and blocking everything coming his way.

What was the cherry on the top? The blows he took hurt him badly, but the Aussies more, who, for the second time in two series, failed to break Pujara’s concentration and defence.

With the stars aligning for Pujara just in time for the Border-Gavaskar series, we could see him return to the Test side for his last tour Down Under.

What happens to Shubman Gill then?

For everything that he has done thus far, which is no short of exceptional on several grounds, India must find a way to fit Gill into the XI for the Perth Test. Outside of the top three, which would belong to Rohit, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Pujara should he be picked, Gill’s best chance is probably at lower order, at five or six. That, however, would also depend on KL Rahul’s form heading into the Australian tour.

In an ideal situation, Gill could fit in at five, just after Kohli and before Sarfaraz Khan or Rishabh Pant, though India is unlikely to play Khan so low at seven, putting his spot in jeopardy.

In another scenario, Gill could play ahead of Jaiswal at the top, his preferred position, and having some experience batting there Down Under, Gill could fancy his chances of doing well; with that, he can even press his case for a permanent top-order spot when Rohit bids farewell to this format.

Considering all variables, Gill might have to fight hard for his spot in the XI if the BCCI selectors decide to bring Pujara for the BGT.

However, for now, all eyes would be on Pujara’s selection, and who knows, with that, India could benefit and do an unthinkable – beat Australia thrice at home.

Shubman Gill is a safe bet at no 3 but India still needs Cheteshwar Pujara in Australia. Here's why

India made three changes to the playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand in Pune, including dropping underfire batter KL Rahul. A day after head coach Gautam Gambhir said the management would back Rahul in the Test side, India benched him alongside Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.

India included fit-again Shubman Gill, who replaced Rahul, Washington Sundar for Kuldeep Yadav and Akash Deep for seamer Mohammed Siraj. Meanwhile, New Zealand, who won the toss and elected to bat first, also changed their line-up, bringing in spin-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner for injured Matt Henry.

Here are the playing XIs of both teams -

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah

New Zealand: Tom Latham(c), Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell(w), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel and William ORourke

Three changes for Pune Test

After losing the first Test in Bengaluru, the Indian Team asked for a rank-turner in the second in Pune in their quest to make a comeback in this series. Given the surface on offer, India was bound to play an extra spinner, and with Sundar’s inclusion to the squad right after the first match, it became evident that India would play him.

On the other hand, KL Rahul, who failed to deliver in Bengaluru, was dropped, despite Gambhir going public about management backing him in the Test side with the Border-Gavaskar series looming. The right-handed batter faced flak for his poor home run in this format, with the fans taking to social media asking for his exclusion from the playing XI.

Answering all such queries surrounding Rahul’s Test future, Gautam Gambhir said, “You don't pick players on social media because of social media or for that matter even what the experts are saying. Here are the playing XIs of both teams - India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah New Zealand: Tom Latham(c), Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell(w), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel and William ORourke Three changes for Pune Test After losing the first Test in Bengaluru, the Indian Team asked for a rank-turner in the second in Pune in their quest to make a comeback in this series. Ultimately, everyone is judged. “International cricket is all about being judged, to be honest, because everyone's performance will be judged eventually. India drop KL Rahul for second Test against New Zealand; make three changes as match gets underway in Pune

After Day 1 of the India versus New Zealand first Test was washed out, Rohit Sharma-led hosts won the toss on Day 2, on Thursday (Oct 17), and opted to bat first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. As it was reported that Shubman Gill has neck issues, the right-hander misses out, hence, India have included Sarfaraz Khan whereas Kuldeep Yadav has replaced Akash Deep. Hence, India have gone on with three spinners and two seamers.

At the coin toss, Rohit said, "We are going to have a bat first. It has been under the covers and we do understand that it could be slightly sticky early on but the nature of the pitch is such that you would want to put runs on the board first. You want to get the result as much as we want. We assess where we are decide what needs to be done as a team. We have played well in the last few Test matches. Fresh series for us and we want to start well. From the last Test two changes, Gill misses out, Sarfaraz comes in. Kuldeep comes in for Akash."

Ind vs NZ, 1st Test: Injured Shubman Gill misses out, Kuldeep Yadav and Sarfaraz Khan named in India's XI

India is focused on the three-match Test series versus New Zealand, at home, which got underway on Wednesday (Oct 16). However, they have one eye on the forthcoming five-match Test series in Australia, starting on Nov 22 in Perth. There are reports that Indian captain Rohit Sharma might miss the first Test, in Perth, due to personal reasons. In this case, it will be interesting to see who leads and also opens for India. While they have two good options in the form of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble feels Gill should not be promoted to fill in for Rohit. Starting his Test career as an opener, the right-hander has moved to the No. 3 slot, succeeding Cheteshwar Pujara.

'There's KL Rahul who is synonymous with change and adapting to whatever the team wants'

"You know he (Shubman) is exceptionally talented, skilful and he's done that. He's been to Australia before. Like you mentioned, in Brisbane, he got a wonderful fifty there and he knows the conditions," Kumble told the broadcasters during a rain-marred Day 1 of the India-NZ first Test on Wednesday in Bengaluru.

He further opined, "I don't want to change that. I know there's a temptation to push Shubman Gill because Rohit is not available in the first Test. But, there's always KL Rahul, synonymous with change and adapting to whatever the team wants. Whether you want to open the batting or keep wickets, Rahul Dravid did that, now KL Rahul is doing that."

Rahul started his Test career as an opener but has now moved to the lower-order recently.

Kumble also spoke on how Gill at No. 3 will be crucial for India's success in Australia and stated that his playing style is a lot different than Rahul Dravid and Pujara (who owned that slot for a long period before him).

He mentioned, "You said, for the last 25 years, there have been only two players who have been consistently playing (at one down) and it's a tough role. I mean, both those batsmen, Rahul and Cheteshwar, contributed immensely during that period, and you know you have to balance it out. You could probably be batting the second ball of the test match, or you could be batting much later when the conditions are easier."

"But more often than not, you get in there to control that first session and see off the new ball because we know that the Kookaburra Ball after the 1st 25 hours, the best time to bat is between the 30th over and the 60th over. And that's what these two batters did throughout their careers, ensuring that the team was safe and the four number four, number five and number six batters, came in much later into the lineup so that they could comfortably bat and score the runs.

"So Shubman will have to play that role very specifically in Australia. He may have to change a little bit based on the conditions. He has the ability (to do that) as well," Kumble added.

Gill has played 27 Tests with 1,656 runs at an average of 36.80, including five hundreds and six fifties.

Ind vs Aus: Anil Kumble feels Shubman Gill should not open in Rohit Sharma's absence, names his pick

The selectors of the Indian men’s national team will have a good headache in the coming days after reports emerged of Rohit Sharma’s unavailability for the first Test in Perth against Australia next month. With India set to take on Australia in a five-match Test series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the selector’s panel led by Ajit Agarkar will now have to decide on who will succeed Rohit with long-term commitments also in sight.

After reports emerged of Rohit’s unavailability for the Perth Test, the attention has turned to who could succeed the veteran as skipper.
It was a perfect day at the office for Team India in the ongoing first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai on Saturday (Sep 21). The duo of Shubman Gill (unbeaten 119) and Rishabh Pant (109) slammed respective hundreds as India are now six wickets away from victory as Bangladesh closed Day 3 at 158/4 and need 357 runs to win. IND vs BAN: India on the brink of win after Gill, Pant tons in second innings; Ban need 357 more runs to win

Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh started with the Najmul Shanto-led Bangla Tigers rocking the Indian top-order with regular strikes. The first session ended with India being 88/3. After being asked to bat first, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India lost captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli for cheap. The hosts were reeling at 34-3, courtesy of Hasan Mahmud, before Yashasvi Jaiswal-Rishabh Pant revived the Indian innings. While Rohit and Kohli went for six apiece, Gill was dismissed for a eight-ball duck. With this, he joined the unwanted list along with senior batter Kohli.

Notably, this became Gill's third duck at home in 2024, including two versus England early this year. Thus, this made him the sixth Indian batter to have three or more ducks in a calendar year at home.

Former batter Mohinder Amarnath (1983) leads the unwanted list with five ducks to his name. The list also comprises ex-captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (1969), Dilip Vengsarkar (1979), Vinod Kambli (1994) and Kohli (2021).

Virat Kohli (2021) - 3 ducks

Shubman Gill (2024) - 3 ducks

Speaking of Gill, the right-hander scored two ducks in the England home series, which Rohit & Co. won 4-1. He managed a duck during India's unsuccessful 229-run chase in the first Test in Hyderabad and replicated the same in the first innings of the third Test in Rajkot. He, however, ended the series as the second-highest run-getter, with 453 runs including two fifties and equal number of hundreds.

Thus, Gill will be looking to bounce back in style in the remainder of the Bangladesh series.

Ind vs Ban: Shubman Gill joins Virat Kohli in unwanted list after flop show on Day 1 of Chennai Test

Former all-rounder Suresh Raina backed Shubman Gill to become India's next T20I captain. Raina was all praise for the young right-hander, who is gearing up for India's first Test versus Bangladesh in Chennai on Thursday (Sep 19), and feels that if Gill can win the IPL as captain, where he leads the Gujarat Titans (GT), it will propel his chances to lead India in the shortest format. Gill was recently appointed as India's vice-captain in white-ball formats, during the Sri Lanka tour, and also led a second-stringed Indian team in five T20Is versus Zimbabwe, in the African nation.

Who will headline Team India's batting in coming years? Australian stars name their picks

The BCCI selectors could rest star opener Shubman Gill for the upcoming Bangladesh T20Is starting October 7, while Ishan Kishan could return to the Indian Team for the first time since his fallout with BCCI. Per the latest reports, the selectors will rest several big names, including the pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, for the T20Is as part of the workload management.

India’s home season begins with the Bangladesh series, including two Tests and three T20Is, followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand. Ahead of the five Tests Down Under from mid-November, India will also travel to South Africa for four T20Is.

With Gill playing a pivotal role at number three for India in Tests, resting him ahead of New Zealand Tests proves to be the right justification for the call.

ALSO READ: ‘We are favourite to win Border-Gavaskar series’ – Shami confident of India completing hat-trick Down Under

With the selectors relying on Gill to deliver against Australia during the crucial away tour, the India opener must remain fit. Also, considering India will host England for a white-ball series early next year, with the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled in Pakistan for the February-March window, next in line, Gill’s fitness and form will determine India’s chances.

"Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi) and 13 (Hyderabad). Now first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16."

"So, with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break," a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, with veterans Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja announcing their T20I retirements earlier, the selectors are tasked to bring in their replacements for the future. However, as India are playing Bangladesh and South Africa in the shortest format this year, the selectors have time to try specific players for specific positions.

Ishan in for Pant

Rishabh Pant made an emphatic return to international cricket by winning his maiden T20 World Cup in the Americas in June this year. With him being a vital cog in the wheel of India’s Test Team, especially Down Under, the selectors might also rest him.

In his place, they might bring back Ishan Kishan, who recently scored a hundred for India C in the ongoing second round of the Duleep Trophy.

With Sanju Samson failing to make the most of the chances in domestic and international cricket, the selectors will look to give Kishan another chance.

"Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi) and 13 (Hyderabad). Now first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16." "So, with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break," a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity. Ishan in for Pant Rishabh Pant made an emphatic return to international cricket by winning his maiden T20 World Cup in the Americas in June this year. (With inputs from agencies)
