The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh as Mayank Yadav was given a maiden call-up. The squad announced on Saturday (Sep 28) came up with surprises in the Suryakumar Yadav-led contingent with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant rested ahead of a busy couple of months. Interestingly, there was no place for Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad while Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stars Rinku Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy also feature in the Indian team.
Having impressed in IPL 2024, a call-up was on the cards for Mayank but he was nursing an injury in the last few months. He was impressive for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) before getting injured having scalped seven wickets in his debut campaign. He gained fame for his speed and agility which caught the eye of the selectors despite having played only four matches in IPL 2024.
On the other hand, Gill and Pant have been rested with the former being the vice-captain of the side. India play Australia in a five-match Test series in November with a mini South Africa tour also approaching in November. While the BCCI has not named a designated vice-captain for the side, Hardik Pandya is expected to lead the side in case Suryakumar Yadav is not available.
On the other hand, Sanju Samson will be the designated wicketkeeper and unlike the T20 World Cup is expected to get playing time. Jitesh Sharma is the second-choice wicketkeeper for the Indian side.
The T20I series will start on Sunday (Oct 6) followed by encounters in Delhi (Oct 9) and Hyderabad (Oct 12).
