Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has backed the pairing of Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan to succeed middle-order batters Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. India will face the Aussies Down Under with the five-match series starting on November 22 in Perth. According to Karthik, India can bank on the services of Sarfaraz and Gill while the duo of Rahane and Pujara are expected to be dropped.

<h2>Karthik backs Gill-Sarfaraz</h2>

“Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan. Both of those batters have done really well against England in the home series that recently happened at the start of the year. I have a feeling both of them will definitely be on that flight to Australia and will be trying to do their best. We will know if they’re able to replace both Ajinkya and Pujji (Pujara). Big shoes to fill, but they have the quality and calibre in them,” Karthik said on HeyCB with DK show on Cricbuzz.

Gill has been one of the consistent performers in the Indian side while Sarfaraz broke into the Indian team recently during the home series against England. Gill was also promoted to the vice-captain’s role recently while Sarfaraz has been in good nick of form in domestic cricket before exploding onto the international scene.

While Gill is guaranteed to be a feature in the Playing XI same can’t be said for Sarfaraz with stern competition for places in the middle order. Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Dinesh Karthik backs Gill-Sarfaraz pairing to succeed Rahane-Pujara during Aussie tour

Virat Kohli has always been very supportive of the young Indian players. In Team India, he shares a great rapport with youngster Shubman Gill. Gill, who is often touted to be the next Virat Kohli, has formed some memorable partnerships with his senior, especially in Tests and ODIs, during his brief career. Recently, a video went viral where the 35-year-old Kohli is seen berating Gill's success in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar, in Australia&nbsp;(where the right-hander&nbsp;made 259 runs in 3 Tests). The former Indian captain stated&nbsp;that the youngster has a 'long way to go' and&nbsp;'cannot be the next Kohli'. However, the video has turned out to be fake.

The video turned out to be fake, with the voice&nbsp;being an AI-generated version of Kohli's. In the clip, Kohli can be seen slamming the 24-year-old Gill by saying&nbsp;there is a 'big gap between showing promise and becoming a legend'. In addition, Kohli arrogantly claims, 'In Indian cricket, there's god (Sachin Tendulkar) and then there's me'.&nbsp;

FAKE VIDEO ALERT! Clip of Virat Kohli SCOLDING Shubman Gill goes viral - Watch

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has confirmed his choice for India's opening slot for the 2025 Champions Trophy, to be held in Pakistan early next year. After the ODI series loss to Sri Lanka, early this month, Rohit Sharma-led India have only three more ODIs -- versus England at home -- ahead of the next ICC event. Thus, Karthik believes India will stick to their tried-and-tested opening pair of Rohit and Shubman Gill, with Yashasvi Jaiswal as an backup option.

Karthik explained his choice&nbsp;on&nbsp;Cricbuzz and said, "Why? Rohit and Shubman are a very good combination. Yes, Jaiswal has a great opportunity to be the backup opener and will get his opportunity soon if Shubman doesn't go as well as expected. And India has a very solid middle order as well."

"In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, they are just going to be playing three more games. And I am pretty confident it's going to be Rohit and Shubman opening for the Champions Trophy," he added.

Gill and Rohit have forged a successful opening pair in&nbsp;ODIs (with Jaiswal partnering Hitman at the top in whites). The duo opened the innings for India in the 2023 home ODI World Cup, where the Men in Blue ended as the runners-up. In the ODI WC, Rohit ended with 597 runs and Gill managed 354 runs despite missing the initial games due to dengue. The pair managed to put up four 50-plus stands and one century partnership.

Talking about Jaiswal, the southpaw&nbsp;has&nbsp;scored 1,028&nbsp;runs in 9 Tests, including three tons, and 723 runs at a strike-rate of 164.31&nbsp;in 23 T20Is. However, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter is yet to make his ODI debut. Given he was part of Rohit-led India's victorious 2024 T20 WC squad, he is likely to continue as a backup opener at the forthcoming Champions Trophy.

India are placed in Group A along with hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand whereas Group B comprises South Africa, Afghanistan, Australia and England.

Champions Trophy 2025: Dinesh Karthik picks his Indian openers, no place for RR star

Team India’s new interim bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, has given a heads-up to the fans, asking them to be ready to watch a different playing template from now. After the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka ended in a tie on Friday, Bahutule said the Indian fans would see more top-order batters rolling their arms, giving the captain more options to pick from.&nbsp;

Since Gautam Gambhir took over the reins from Rahul Dravid, the difference in the decision-making was visible from the offset. During the recently-concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka, which India won 3-0, part-timers including Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav, alongside all-rounder Riyan Parag, bowled; and not only that, but they also won matches for the country with that.

Even during the first ODI, opener Shubman Gill bowled an over.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same lines, Bahutule said, “I think our batters are good bowlers as well, to be honest. You know their primary skill is batting, so at times, they don’t focus much on their bowling. But they have the skills.”

“You might have seen in the T20Is…Rinku and Surya contributed with the ball. So, an opportunity was given to Shubman here. It’s going to be an all-rounder’s game in the coming days. So, if one or two (batsmen) from the top order can bowl it will definitely help the team, of course, depending on pitch conditions and situations.

“Also, it will be a surprise element to the opposition, if a batter can bowl. So, moving ahead, there will be ample opportunities for batters to bowl,” the interim bowling coach continued.

<h2>Bahutule praises bowlers, admits SL scored 15-20 runs more</h2>

At a time when the Indian bowlers reduced Sri Lanka to 160 for six on a tougher batting wicket, they looked like wrapping their innings inside 200; however, a handy stand between Dunith Wellalage and Hasaranga saw the hosts cross 200 and put a fighting total on the board.

Despite that, the Indian bowlers were right on the target. Praising them for their efforts, Bahutule said,

“They had a partnership after we got them down to 160 for six, maybe we could have got them for 15-20 runs less. But overall, I think the bowlers did well. Arshdeep and Siraj began well, and Shivam bowled well on a wicket, which was slightly helpful to the spinners.

“I think spinners – Washi, Axar and Kuldeep – contributed well. To restrict them to 230 was, I think, a good effort,” he concluded.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the second ODI is scheduled for Sunday (August 4) in Colombo.&nbsp;

SL vs IND - Be ready to watch more batters turn into bowlers, says Sairaj Bahutule after tied ODI in Colombo

Shubman Gill might have missed out on getting picked in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad in the Americas, but his pedigree for success and keenness to improve helped him graduate from an emerging player to part of the leadership group. Per the latest reports, the opener might replace ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah as Test’s vice-captain, starting with the home season in September.

Following the change in the backroom staff after a successful T20 WC campaign, with Gautam Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as Team India’s new head coach, the onus fell on Gill as the selectors backed him to succeed Rohit Sharma as all-format captain.

Until this year, Gill never captained a senior side, but he was named the skipper of his IPL team (Gujarat Titans) and later led Team India in the five-match series against Zimbabwe, which the Men in Blue won 4-1. Impressed with his leadership ability and considering factors like age and fitness, the decision-makers handpicked him as the future India captain.&nbsp;

Gill first replaced Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain in the ODIs, with the selectors overlooking the star all-rounder over his fitness concerns, and now he might replace Bumrah for the same position in Tests.

India’s home season begins with two Tests against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai, with the second Test at the Green Park in Kanpur from September 27.

Although India hosts New Zealand for three Tests after that, their crucial away tour of Australia consisting of five Tests will be a litmus test for Rohit and Gill in the leadership group.

<h2>‘Gill is a three-format player’</h2>

With Gill being one of the limited three-format players for India, the selectors pinned their hopes on him to nurture into a leader who can lead across formats.&nbsp;

Pinpointing the same during the Sri Lanka’s pre-series presser in Mumbai, the chief selector Ajit Agarkar said,

“This time with the T20 World Cup around, when Hardik got injured, it was a bit of a challenge. At that time, Rohit wasn’t playing. He was around, and we were lucky that Rohit was available to lead. We don’t want that situation again. Shubman is the guy we feel again, as he is a three-format player, and he has shown quality over the last year or so. And we have heard from the dressing room.”

Meanwhile, Gill will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the T20I series against Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill to replace Jasprit Bumrah as Team India's Test vice-captain: Reports

Shubman Gill will thrive in his new role as the ODI vice-captain, feels former India batting coach Vikram Rathour. Soon after Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as Team India’s new head coach, the selectors decided to appoint Gill as Rohit’s deputy in the ODIs, which, to Vikram, is an excellent decision. Having watched Gill grow as a batter during his time with the Indian Team, Vikram explains how leadership will help Gill mature as a cricketer.

Following Hardik Pandya’s departure as Gujarat Titans captain ahead of this season, the franchise handpicked Gill to lead in IPL 2024. Though he missed out on getting picked for the T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas later, the BCCI named him the skipper of the recently concluded five-match T20Is against Zimbabwe, which India won 4-1.

Speaking to the Indian Express in an exclusive chat, Rathour explained how, by looking at Gill’s body language, he knew that the star batter would make a great captain one day.

“Whatever I have seen him, be it for the Gujarat Titans or in Zimbabwe (when Gill led in a T20 series), he did a good job. He has shown terrific body language, which is a must if you are leading a side. Now with the vice-captaincy, the BCCI has given him extra responsibility, and I am sure he will thrive in this role,” Rathour said in a chat with The Indian Express.

<h2>Confidence and game awareness – Gill’s USP</h2>

Detailing further on what made him believe that Gill has both confidence and game awareness, Rathour recalled an instance ahead of the England Tests earlier this year, when Gill approached the leadership group to take up the number three role willingly. Although he was out of touch, having failed to score a fifty in the past 12 innings in the lead-up to that, Gill slammed a stunning hundred in the second innings of the Vizag Test.&nbsp;

“The talk came from him. He felt that No 3 was an ideal position for him to bat, and the management group backed him. It was his decision, which was backed by Rahul, myself and Rohit, and he turned it around in the England series,” Rathour continued.

The former batting coach also shared what he thought of Gill when he first saw him bat in the nets.

“When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. When the first time I saw him playing, the immediate thought that went into my mind was ‘Whoa this kid is extremely talented’.

“What impressed me the most was his game awareness, which is something you don’t generally see in the young cricketers, who are coming through the ranks. He knew his game, he understood how he needed to bat in different situations and never shied away from challenges,” Rathour added.

‘Gill will thrive in his new role’ – Vikram Rathour on ‘Prince’ getting ready for leadership

Former India spinner Amit Mishra has said that Shubman Gill won't be his first choice as captain of the team. The veteran spinner said that Gill 'doesn't know anything about captaincy,' while speaking on a YouTube podcast.

"I would not have made him the captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn't know how to captain the side, he is clueless (translation from Hindi, not verbatim)," he said on YouTube podcast with Shubhankar Mishra.

The Indian team made him the captain as they want to give him the leadership experience, which wasn't visible when he led Gujarat Titans in IPL," Mishra added.

On being asked if Rahul Dravid's liking towards him got Gill the captaincy, Mishra said: "Everyone has some liking. I am not a Shubman Gill hater, I also like him. But, I feel Ruturaj is a better option because he has scored runs in tougher situations, be it for Chennai Super Kings or during the Asian Games. India currently doesn't have a permanent T20I skipper after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement in the shortest format following the 2024 T20 World Cup win. It is speculated that Hardik Pandya will succeed Rohit as the T20I skipper for India.

Shubman Gill got T20I captaincy over Ruturaj Gaikwad because of Rahul Dravid's liking? Amit Mishra reveals

Stand-in India captain for the Zimbabwe T20Is, Shubman Gill, said he enjoyed leading the team in the five-match series, as it brought the best out of his game. Guiding India to a 4-1 series win despite going down in the first match, Gill admitted that captaincy kept him involved in the game all the more, something he liked.

With all the first-team players rested for this five-match series, Gill was appointed captain while the selectors picked an emerging squad for the Zimbabwe tour. Managing and leading a newer set of cricketers, most he’s played with or against in the domestic or the IPL, Gill said, "It is something that I definitely enjoy.”

“I think it brings out the best in me when I am out there because I look to be involved in the game. It is something that really brings out the side of me which I enjoy being on the field,” Gill said after leading India to a 42-run win over Zimbabwe in the fifth and final T20I.

Gill had not captained any team on this level before this, and upon tasting success in his debut series, he admits that there was pressure, but he is glad to have dealt with it with ease, ending up on the winning side.&nbsp;

“There was pressure, I wouldn't say extra pressure, but obviously, even when you are playing just as a batsman when you don't perform, there is a certain kind of pressure that comes along with it,” Gill continued.&nbsp;

“But I think that's the fun part of it. You kind of feel so many different emotions. Pressure is one of them. And when you get out of that, the satisfaction that you feel is immense,” he added.

<h2>India’s massive bench strength</h2>

Indian cricket is ahead of its contemporaries on numerous grounds, with a massive bench strength being one. Despite the unavailability of most T20 World Cup-bound players, India won an away series convincingly, reflecting the sea of talented cricketers waiting in the wing for their chances.&nbsp;

Speaking of leading such a talented bunch of cricketers, Gill said, "To be able to lead such phenomenal talented players who I have had the pleasure to play with or against at some stage in age-group cricket or Under-19 or at the India level, it just feels very amazing."

"When you have played against or with so many of the players... I think almost, with everyone I have played against or with at some age-group level, it definitely makes my job easier because I understand them at a player level and I understand them as a person as well."

"So many talented players, so many players coming up and it is really fun to be able to play alongside them when I am at the non-striker's end," Gill added.

Team India will now travel to Sri Lanka for the white-ball series, including three T20Is and as many ODIs, the squads of which are yet to be announced.

With the win, India took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. Earlier, India won the toss and elected to field first in Harare. Zimbabwe had a good start though, scoring 44 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket. Abhishek Sharma eventually broke the partnership in the ninth over with the wicket of Tadiwanashe Marumani. The hosts lost three more wickets in the next six overs and came down to 96/4 from 63/0. Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza then played a sublime innings of 46 off 28 balls and the team scored 45 runs in the next 3.5 overs. India, however, pulled things back in the last nine balls and restricted Zimbabwe to 152/7 in 20 overs.

ZIM vs IND, 4th T20I: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill star as India win to take 3-1 lead in five-match series

Of all the cricketing records that once looked impossible to break, scoring 400 in a Test inning is the closest to being broken; not that it's easy, but considering how the game has evolved over the years, it looks likely to happen sooner. And the one who held the record for two decades now, Brian Charles Lara, feels it’s about time that&nbsp;someone breaks it. However, not just anyone but two Indian batters – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, are the ones he thinks will surpass that number in Tests.

Brian Lara broke his (375) and Matthew Hayden’s record (385) to become the first and only man to date to register 400 runs in an innings in a Test. He did it against his favourite opponents, England, during the Antigua Test in 2004. No player since came close other than former Sri Lanka Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 374 against South Africa during the marathon stand with Kumar Sangakkara in 2006 in Colombo.

Twenty years later, Lara admits several players during the past two decades, including Virender Sehwag and Sanath Jayasuriya, challenged it, but none could break it.&nbsp;However, he now feels two Indian batters have it in them to get past 400 in a Test inning.

"There were players in my time, who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark - Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players," Lara said in a chat with The Daily Mail.

Although he also mentioned how just attacking batters have a chance at this shot, he mentioned the English duo of Zak Crawley and Harry Brook, who can also push for this record.&nbsp;

"How many aggressive players do you have playing today? Especially in the England team. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook. Maybe in the Indian team? Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill. If they find the right situation, the records could be broken – both of them," Lara continued.&nbsp;

<h2>Top-order batters have a chance</h2>

In today’s age and game, several players have shown potential to become future greats in Tests, but going by what’s happening around, only top-order batters look like someone who can get this job done.

Talking of Jaiswal and Gill - both have immense potential to score massive runs up front, with the young left-hander showing promise during the England Tests earlier this year. With two tons, including a maiden double hundred and three fifties, Jaiswal topped the runs chart with 712 runs in five Tests.

However, Gill has shown his skill during several overseas series in the past two years, with his match-winning knock against Australia during the famous 2021 Gabba Test being the highlight.&nbsp;

Brian Lara backs these TWO Indian batters to break his 400-run record in Tests

"Was a crucial match for us and the way we started with batting and bowling, it was remarkable," said skipper Gill after the match.

Upon being asked if it was disappointing to not score 200, Gill said: "Did look like that, but the wicket was a bit double paced, the odd ball was gripping and it was not easy to hit the length ball. We just wanted to keep hitting the length with the ball as well."

Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza said: &nbsp;"We gave away 20 runs extra. We still have problems at the top, but we are backing the boys. I know they are trying and once they do, we will come good again. We have tried 15 different [opening] partners in a year and a half. There is a lot of cricket going in the country. We are trying to do everything. It is time we players including me take the responsibility."

The fourth match of the series will be played on Saturday, July 13.

ZIM vs IND, 3rd T20I: Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar star as India take 2-1 lead in five-match series

Abhishek Sharma was all over the news for his record-equalling third-fastest T20I hundred for India against Zimbabwe on Sunday (Jul&nbsp;7) in Harare; however, the mantra to his success is far from what was on display. During a chat on bcci.tv after the game, Abhishek revealed he borrowed Captain Shubman Gill’s bat for this game, and that did wonders for the opener, though not for the first time.

Abhishek and Gill are close friends and have grown up together, having played junior level and Under-19 cricket since. With both playing for India now, Abhishek admitted every time he plays with Gill’s bat, he scores runs. The left-handed batter said this has happened even in the IPL, with his outing in his second India game being the latest example.

Meanwhile, on his debut in the first match, Abhishek got out on a duck but made a stunning comeback with his maiden international hundred in the next.&nbsp;

“This has been going on since Under-14 cricket. Whenever I have played with his bat, I’ve done well. I want to tell everyone that even today (on Sunday), I played with his bat, which wasn’t an easy task. It’s my last option for a comeback. Special thanks to him for lending me his bat on time,” Abhishek said in a video shared by BCCI.

“It had happened in the IPL as well. Today was no exception as it went well as it usually happens,” Abhishek added.

<h2>Yuvraj lauds Abhishek</h2>

A four-ball duck in the first T20I might be disappointing for Abhishek, but not for his mentor and one of India’s greatest match-winners, Yuvraj Singh. Abhishek said after the first match, he spoke with Yuvraj on the phone, and instead of the India veteran scolding him for playing a careless shot, he lauded his beginning, saying it was a good start to his career.&nbsp;

However, Abhishek credited Yuvraj for putting in the hard work and guiding him to the right path, which led to his India call-up.&nbsp;

“Very proud. Well done. You deserve it. Many more to come. This is just a start,” Yuvraj said to Abhishek as revealed by him.

“I spoke to him yesterday, and he said, I don’t know why, but he was very happy when I was out on zero. He said that’s a good start. I think he must be very proud of me just like my family.

“I am playing at this level because of him. The hard work he has put on me. For the past two-three years he has really worked hard not only on my cricket but even off the field as well,” the 22-year-old added.&nbsp;

India came back strongly in the second T20I against Zimbabwe to equal the five-match series 1-1 with a dominating 100&nbsp;runs win on Sunday (Jul 7). The 2024 T20 World Cup champions were handed a shock loss in the first T20I on Saturday.

Opener Wessly Madhevere, however, kept the fight on with 43&nbsp;off 39&nbsp;balls, adding 41&nbsp;runs for the eighth wicket with Luke Jongwe. The effort was too little too late for Zimbabwe, nonetheless. Jongwe also played a handy innings of 33&nbsp;off 26&nbsp;balls.

The game started with India skipper Shubman Gill winning the toss and electing to bat first. India, however, again got a bad start as Gill departed in the second over of the match.

Ruturaj Gaikwad then joined Sharma on the crease and the duo added 137 runs for the second wicket.&nbsp; Sharma got out on the last ball of the 14th over after a blistering 47-ball 100 innings.

After Sharma's dismissal, Rinku Singh, who also scored a duck in the first T20I, showed his class.

Both the batters added 87 runs in the last six overs as India posted a mammoth 234/2 in 20 overs. Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 77 off 47 balls while Rinku hit 48 not out off 22 balls with the help of two hours and five sixes.

India, however, were slow in the first ten overs of the game, scoring just 74 runs. Abhishek then changed the momentum with 28 runs off 11th over bowled by Dion Myers. Abhishek hit three fours and two sixes in the over and reached his maiden fifty as well.

For Zimbabwe, Wellington Masakadza and Blessing Muzarabani took one wicket each.

ZIM vs IND, 2nd T20I: Abhishek Sharma stars with record ton as India level series with dominating win

Team India’s stand-in captain for the Zimbabwe T20Is, Shubman Gill, said no cricket for the players in the lead-up to this series resulted in a shocking loss in the first game as the hosts beat India by 13 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Gill laments rustiness as the reason for the loss as Team India prepares for the next game on Sunday (Jul&nbsp;7) at the same venue.

With no big names around and young guns completing the Playing XI, Gill’s captaincy debut failed to leave a mark. A lesser-experienced Indian Team fell shy of the target in a low-scoring thriller despite the skipper topping the runs chart (31).

India bowled first and restricted Zimbabwe to 115 for nine in 20 overs, with Ravi Bishnoi making headlines for his superb spell of four for 13. Washington Sundar was India’s best performer, picking two wickets and scoring 27 off 34 during the failed chase.&nbsp;

Gill commented on the team’s rusty fielding, saying, "I think we bowled pretty well, but I think we left ourselves down with the fielding. We weren't up to our standards, and I think everybody looked rusty."

Meanwhile, the Men in Blue lost debutant Abhishek Sharma on a duck before Zimbabwe picked three more wickets under 30 inside the Powerplay, including Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rinku Singh, to put India’s back against the wall. Though Gill stood tall at one end, the Indians kept losing wickets at the other.

Following his wicket, Zimbabwe looked confident of winning this game. Sundar’s handy contribution with the bat did delay the jubilation that followed, but Zimbabwe eventually won the match by 13 runs to stun the recently-crowned world champions.

Speaking of the team’s shallow performance in the 1st T20I, Gill said, "Halfway down, we had lost five wickets, and it would have been best for us if I had stayed there to the end, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. Very disappointed with the way I got out and the way this whole match turned out."

<h2>India has a chance to level series</h2>

After a shocker in the first T20I, India can redeem themselves in the second game (on Sunday).&nbsp;

Team India’s stand-in captain for the Zimbabwe T20Is, Shubman Gill, said no cricket for the players in the lead-up to this series resulted in a shocking loss in the first game as the hosts beat India by 13 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Team India’s stand-in captain for the Zimbabwe T20Is, Shubman Gill, said no cricket for the players in the lead-up to this series resulted in a shocking loss in the first game as the hosts beat India by 13 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Gill laments rustiness as the reason for the loss as Team India prepares for the next game on Sunday (Jul 7) at the same venue. With no big names around and young guns completing the Playing XI, Gill’s captaincy debut failed to leave a mark. A lesser-experienced Indian Team fell shy of the target in a low-scoring thriller despite the skipper topping the runs chart (31). India bowled first and restricted Zimbabwe to 115 for nine in 20 overs, with Ravi Bishnoi making headlines for his superb spell of four for 13. Washington Sundar was India’s best performer, picking two wickets and scoring 27 off 34 during the failed chase. ALSO READ: IND vs ZIM, 1st T20I: India's Abhishek Sharma equals MS Dhoni, KL Rahul with duck in debut match Gill commented on the team’s rusty fielding, saying, "I think we bowled pretty well, but I think we left ourselves down with the fielding. We weren't up to our standards, and I think everybody looked rusty." Meanwhile, the Men in Blue lost debutant Abhishek Sharma on a duck before Zimbabwe picked three more wickets under 30 inside the Powerplay, including Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rinku Singh, to put India’s back against the wall. Very disappointed with the way I got out and the way this whole match turned out." India has a chance to level series After a shocker in the first T20I, India can redeem themselves in the second game (on Sunday). Team India is expected to field the same XI and be upbeat to level the series with a statement win. (With inputs from agencies)

Zimbabwe hand shock defeat to T20 World Cup champions India in first T20I post Rohit, Virat's retirement

Shubman Gill admits taking inspiration from former skippers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as he begins his captaincy stint with the Zimbabwe T20Is starting Saturday (July 6) in Harare. With Virat and Rohit announcing their T20I retirements following the World Cup win in Barbados, the Indian Team is without a permanent captain in the format, with BCCI set to announce the new coach and T20I skipper soon.

In the absence of first-team players, Gill will lead a young 15-man squad in Zimbabwe. Talking about the pressure of delivering as an Indian captain and more so as a player, Gill talks about how tough it is to replicate what Virat and Rohit have done for India.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media ahead of the 1st T20I in Harare, Gill said, “Pressure and expectations…they, I think, always remain. But what Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai have achieved, if I look to achieve that or reach that, it will be very difficult for me.”

“Every player has his own goal, where he wants to reach. That is the pressure. If you want to reach where other people have reached, then you have more pressure.

“Obviously, there is pressure. But what they’ve achieved or what they did for India…they are both idols and legends of Indian cricket. But as players and the team the things we want to achieve, there is definitely pressure about that,” Gill continued.

Looking at the future of Indian Cricket, Gill is the brightest prospect to lead the side across formats. Having stamped his authority as one of the best youngsters rising from the ranks, Gill has plenty riding on his shoulders.&nbsp;

<h2>IPL experience counts</h2>

Although he’s been around the Indian cricket circuit for the past few years, Gill was offered captaincy at Gujarat Titans in the IPL this year. The India international showed improvement in his leadership skills with each passing game.&nbsp;

However, with him leading the Indian T20I side for the first time, Gill understands the gravity of it.

Crediting IPL for being able to manage the pressure at the big stage, Gill said,

“I’ve learnt a lot of lessons when I captained my IPL team for the first time. I got to know a lot more things about myself and a lot more things about the leadership perspective,” Gill said.

“I felt most of the challenges that you face as a captain are more mental, how you prepare the boys. Everyone’s got the skill set, it’s about how you can give them (other players) the confidence to be able to deliver that skill set on the field,” he concluded.

ZIM v IND, 1st T20I: Shubman Gill takes inspiration from Virat and Rohit as he begins captaincy stint

Just a day after the senior men’s team celebrated their T20 World Cup-winning triumph in Mumbai, a new-looking Indian Team will face Zimbabwe in the first of the five matches in Harare on Saturday (July 6). Per the latest reports, India will field a few debutants, including attacking all-rounder Abhishek Sharma and middle-order batter Riyan Parag. While Shubman Gill will lead the team, a couple of new faces in the pace attack could also take the field.

In the absence of seniors, including in the backroom staff, the NCA head, VVS Laxman, will coach the Indian Team on this tour. Per the latest reports, Captain Gill will open alongside debutant Abhishek, while Ruturaj Gaikwad will bat at number three. Per Riyan Parag’s batting position in the IPL (where he plays for Rajasthan Royals), he will continue to bat at number four.&nbsp;

Although no reports of top-order batter Sai Sudharsan playing are done rounds, India could play Jitesh Sharma (wk) and Dhruv Jurel in the lower order. Washington Sundar will play at number seven, while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi will also make the cut.&nbsp;

With several options in the pace attack, the Indian Team might go ahead with Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar and either Khaleel Ahmed or Harshit Rana.

With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from the T20Is following the T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados, their replacements are in the making in the background.&nbsp;

With several newcomers likely to get an extended run in this five-match series, the performers might get picked for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka later in the month.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Abhishek Sharma, who was handy for SunRisers Hyderabad in IPL this year, pairing with Travis Head and tearing into oppositions at will. His attacking stroke play, with his slow left-arm spin, provides the captain with extra cushion of an all-rounder in the side.

Besides Sharma, Riyan Parag will also hog all the limelight. The Assam batter was in brilliant touch throughout this year, with his exploits in IPL 2024 making his case stronger for selection.

Bishnoi will lead the spin attack, while the onus falls on Avesh Khan and Mukesh Sharma in the seam-bowling department.&nbsp;

India squad for T20I series vs Zimbabwe named: Gill to captain; Riyan, Abhishek and Nitish get call-ups

Shubman Gill has turned out to be the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) top contender to lead India in the&nbsp;upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, after the T20 World Cup. Gill was part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 WC squad, named among the reserves, before being released. The right-hander is being considered to lead the Men in Blue in the tour of the African nation after Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav reportedly declined to take part in the tour. India will tour Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6.

As per a report in the Indian Express, the decision to consider Gill as the Indian captain for the Zimbabwe tour came after Hardik and Surya's refusal to take part in the tour. Many senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik and Surya are expected to take a break post the ongoing T20 WC, in West Indies and the USA. Hence, Gill's name came up to lead the national side in Zimbabwe, where several youngsters will also be tested.&nbsp;

Gill leading contender to lead India after Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav decline Zimbabwe tour: Report

Amid reports that Shubman Gill was being sent back to India by the team management over 'disciplinary' issues, the star cricketer has responded on social media in a rather cheeky manner. The&nbsp;batter shared a couple of pictures with&nbsp;Rohit Sharma before he flies back home while&nbsp;the Indian captain departs for the Caribbean for the Super 8 stage.&nbsp;

On Sunday (Jun 16) afternoon, Gill posted a story on Instagram with Rohit's daughter Samaira and captioned it as saying:&nbsp;“Sammy and I learning the art of discipline from @rohitsharma45."

<img alt="Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c6d093f8-a382-4152-b00e-3c64fccf11d9" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Screenshot%202024-06-16%20155418.png" />

The use of 'discipline' was a subtle dig at media reports that claimed that Gill had not&nbsp;been travelling with the team during the US leg of the T20 World Cup and was rather focused on side projects.

The reports stated&nbsp;that the team was miffed and decided to send Gill home on disciplinary charges. Another report added that Gill had unfollowed Rohit on social media in the aftermath of&nbsp;the alleged fallout.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/t20-world-cup-2024-shubman-gill-unfollows-rohit-sharma-on-instagram-but-no-disciplinary-issues-732077">Also read |&nbsp;T20 World Cup 2024: Shubman Gill unfollows Rohit Sharma on Instagram, but no disciplinary issues</a>

<h2>Vikram Rathour clears the air</h2>

However, all the rumors were quashed by Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour who said it was always the plan to send Gill and Avesh Khan back home after the culmination of the US leg.

“This was a plan from the beginning. When we come to the US, four players will come together. After that two will be released and two will travel with us to West Indies," Rathour said in the press conference as India's final match of the group stage against Canada was abandoned due to rain.

"So, this plan was made from the beginning since the team was selected. This was planned so we are just following that,” he added.&nbsp;

India have another opener in Yashasvi Jaiswal in the wings while spin will be the priority in the Caribbean, which explains Avesh's exclusion from the squad. India will square off against Afghanistan in the first match of the Super 8 on Thursday (Jun 20) in Barbados.&nbsp;

Amid reports that Shubman Gill was being sent back to India by the team management over 'disciplinary' issues, the star cricketer has responded on social media in a rather cheeky manner. The batter shared a couple of pictures with Rohit Sharma before he flies back home while the Indian captain departs for the Caribbean for the Super 8 stage. On Sunday (Jun 16) afternoon, Gill posted a story on Instagram with Rohit's daughter Samaira and captioned it as saying: “Sammy and I learning the art of discipline from @rohitsharma45." The use of 'discipline' was a subtle dig at media reports that claimed that Gill had not been travelling with the team during the US leg of the T20 World Cup and was rather focused on side projects. The reports stated that the team was miffed and decided to send Gill home on disciplinary charges. Another report added that Gill had unfollowed Rohit on social media in the aftermath of the alleged fallout. Shubman Gill poses with Rohit Sharma in cheeky response to 'disciplinary issue' rumours

Team India has enjoyed their time in the United States during the ongoing T20 World Cup as they now look forward to the Super 8 stage of the tournament having won all three matches so far. However, not all is good in the camp after Shubman Gill’s latest social media act raised a debate among cricket fans. While reports have also stated that Punjab-born players are likely to be sent back home due to disciplinary reasons, this is not exactly the case.

<h2>Gill-Rohit become talking point</h2>

On Saturday (June 15), social media users spotted that Gill unfollowed Rohit on Instagram which raised multiple questions on the duos relationship. One of&nbsp;the taking point was Gill’s indiscipline and frustration of being dropped from the T20 World Cup squad.

It was reported that he was unhappy with Rohit’s choice of picking Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of him for not participating actively in the practice sessions. It is worth noting that, Gill is part of the Indian team as a reserve player and not a permanent player, meaning he could not participate in the T20 World Cup unless a batter has been ruled out.

After the issue, some media reports have stated that Gill could be sent back home along with Avesh Khan with the former’s discipline being a major reason.

However, according to close sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), no final decision has yet been made on the duo and they continue to be part of the team.

Both Avesh and Gill could likely leave the reserve side if the management thinks they are no longer required during the Super 8 stage which takes place in the islands of the Caribbean in the West Indies.

For now, they will continue to be with Team India with focus on the Canada match followed by the Super 8 clashes against Australia, Afghanistan and potentially Bangladesh.

Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan could return home following the USA leg of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas. Picked as part of a four-member travelling reserve, Gill and Khan have travelled with the team to Florida in a chartered flight for both Indian and USA players, where the Men in Blue face Canada in their last group match on Saturday (June 15).&nbsp;

After India’s third group game against the co-hosts USA at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York, both teams flew to the other part of the country for their final league game, with the USA facing Ireland on Friday (June 14).

Meanwhile, Gill and Khan were just part of the squad till the first round and expected to stay back in case of an injury. However, considering Fort Lauderdale will host India’s last group match and the city is flooded with consistent rains, India’s game might get washed out, leaving Gill and Khan with no option but to head back home.

While the seamers seem to be doing fine thus far in three matches, the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will come into the picture once India get&nbsp;into the Super 8 mode in the Caribbean, where the pitches are likely to assist the spinners.

Despite Gill and Khan leaving the Indian camp, the Men in Blue would have two backups in Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed, with rookie opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also waiting in the wings to get a chance.&nbsp;

With India leading Group A, their Super 8 schedule looks set. India will face Afghanistan on June 20 in the first game in Barbados, most likely Bangladesh two days later on June 22 in Antigua and the mighty Aussies in their final Super 8 match on June 24 in St. Lucia.&nbsp;

Should they win at least two of their three matches or all three, India will qualify for the semis, where they will play in Guyana on June 27, and if they win the semis clash, India will be in the final that will take place in Barbados on Sunday (June 29).

<h2>India face Canada next</h2>

Although the weather could play spoilsport in India’s last league game against Canada, they are still the favourites in case the match gets underway.&nbsp;

With them already sealing the Super 8 spot, India could make changes to their XI, giving a chance&nbsp;to the benched players, including the spin duo of Chahal and Kuldeep.

India could also try Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top by probably resting Captain Rohit or out-of-touch veteran Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday (May 10) experienced a run-feast evening as Gujarat Titans (GT) batters Shubman Gill (104) and Sai Sudharsan (103) ran riot with the bat. The pair put together 210 runs for the opening wicket, the&nbsp;highest for Gujarat Titans in the history of the IPL. The occasion was also the third time in IPL history that a team had two batters scoring hundreds in the same innings. The record partnership also helped GT score 231/3 in their 20 overs as&nbsp;CSK were put&nbsp;on the back foot.&nbsp;

Both the batters were then dismissed in quick succession which&nbsp;restricted GT to 231/3 in 20 overs.&nbsp;This&nbsp;was GT’s second-highest total in the IPL history.

IPL 2024: Shubman Gill-Sai Sudharsan run riot for GT with record 210-run opening stand against CSK

Former Indian chief selector Kris Srikkanth has lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee for picking out-of-form Shubman Gill over Ruturaj Gaikwad in India's 15-man T20 World Cup squad. On Tuesday (April 30), the BCCI announced India's squad which features Rohit Sharma as the captain along with regulars such as Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, etc.

Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson were also named in the main squad with Gill, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed and Rinku Singh part of&nbsp;the reserves list. This has not been well received by Srikkanth -- India's 1983 World Cup-winning member -- as he feels Gill is completely out of form in the ongoing IPL 2024 edition, contrary to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Gaikwad.

So far, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Gill has 320 runs in 10 games at an average of&nbsp;35.56. Meanwhile, Gaikwad is the top run-getter with 509 runs -- at 63.63 and a strike-rate of&nbsp;146.68 with 4 fifties and a hundred. Thus, Srikkanth feels it wasn't fair to overlook the CSK captain's purple patch and claimed that&nbsp;selection is 'all about favouritism'.

<h2>'Gill is selectors' delight, team selection is all about favouritism'</h2>

Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel 'Cheeky Chekka', "Shubman Gill is totally out of form, but why he's selected in the team. There's no doubt that Ruturaj Gaikwad deserves a place. He scored more than 500 runs in 17 innings. Also he scored a century against Australia. Shubman Gill is selectors' delight. He gets chance even if he fails. He finds place even if he fails in Test, ODIs and T20s.There's too much of favoritism in selection. The team selection is all about favouritism."

Srikkanth even slammed the selectors for not including Rinku in the main squad, despite a strike-rate of 176.23 in 15 T20Is.&nbsp;

In this regard, he added, "I am not at all happy. C'mon all of you. Rinku Singh has been spoken about all over the world. He has performed in each and every opportunity he has got. How can you drop Rinku Singh? You drop anyone else, it doesn't matter. In my view, Rinku Singh should have been there, even if that meant you had to drop Yashasvi Jaiswal."

India are in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, USA and Canada and begin their campaign versus Ireland on June 5, in New York.

T20 WC: Srikkanth SLAMS BCCI for picking Shubman Gill over Ruturaj Gaikwad, says 'it is all about favouritism'

Gujarat Titans (GT) edged past hosts Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a last-ball thriller in match 24 of the IPL 2024 edition on Wednesday (April 10), in Jaipur. Chasing 197, Gujarat needed 73 off the last 30 balls and also lost skipper Shubman Gill (72 off 40 balls) before Rashid Khan's 11-ball 24*&nbsp;and Rahul Tewatia's 11-ball 22&nbsp;took GT to a win in a last-ball thriller.

Not many had given GT a chance, especially after their below-par bowling and very poor fielding effort. In the run-chase, they were reduced to 79 for 3 in 10.4 overs and further complicated their task by needing 73 off the last five overs. However, Rashid and Tewatia ended things in style after Gill played a captain's knock. At the post-match presentation, Gill's epic one-liner went viral when presenter-cum-commentator Harsha Bhogle said, "Some of us thought you had left it too late."

To this, Gill was quick to respond by saying, "When Gujarat is playing, never think that again (smiles)." Here is the video -

Talking about the rain-hit game, Sanju Samson-led Royals came into this game on the back of being the only unbeaten side in this year's IPL after four successive wins. They were asked to bat first and soon reduced to 42-2. However, Riyan Parag's 76 (48) and Samson's 38-ball 68* propelled their side to 196 for 3. In reply, GT started well with a 64-opening stand between Gill-Sai Sudharsan but were behind for most of&nbsp;the final 10 overs before pulling off a heist.&nbsp;

RR remain at the top&nbsp;with 8 points despite the shocking loss, whereas GT are now at the sixth spot with&nbsp;6 points.

Gujarat Titans (GT) edged past hosts Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a last-ball thriller in match 24 of the IPL 2024 edition on Wednesday (April 10), in Jaipur. Chasing 197, Gujarat needed 73 off the last 30 balls and also lost skipper Shubman Gill (72 off 40 balls) before Rashid Khan's 11-ball 24* and Rahul Tewatia's 11-ball 22 took GT to a win in a last-ball thriller.

At the post-match presentation, Gill's epic one-liner went viral when presenter-cum-commentator Harsha Bhogle said, "Some of us thought you had left it too late." To this, Gill was quick to respond by saying, "When Gujarat is playing, never think that again (smiles)." <h2>What was the oops moment for Gill?</h2>

Coming out for the toss alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Gill was confident with his team and wanted to make a statement in their first away match of the season. They narrowly beat Mumbai Indians on Sunday in their opening match. However, at the toss when he called right on Ruturaj’s spin of coin commentator and stadium announcer at that time Sanjay Manjrekar asked Gill about his decision on winning the toss.

Looking confident, GT captain Gill decided to bat first, however, he quickly changed his decision in a state of confusion and opted to bowl. This left the crowd, match referee and Majnrekar confused. Upon a deep breath though, Gill decided to take the field first and handed the batting initiative to CSK. A couple of minutes had seen Gill being on the embarrassing end of laughter, failing to recall his pre-meditated call for winning the toss.

<h2>What happened in the match?</h2>

Chennai did not have much to feel in the context of the decision as they scored 206/6 in their 20 overs. Shivam Dube was the top scorer in the innings with 51 while both Ruturaj and Rachin Ravindra scored 46 runs each. Daryl Mitchell (24) and Ajinkya Rahane (12) were also amongst the runner-getters for the home side during the match.

At the time of writing, GT were 43/2 after six overs as they struggled to reach the big total. Sai Sudharsan (11) and Vijay Shankar (10) were unbeaten in the middle for the GT as they still needed 163 runs to win.
