Former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers has picked India's Shubman Gill to be the leading run-scorer at the upcoming ODI World Cup which starts next month on October 5 in India. Gill has been in stellar form this year with 1230 runs in 20 matches. The Indian opener has also scored five hundreds and five fifties in this period as well.

Speaking on what sets Gill apart, de Villiers said: “His technique and style is quite simple and basic generally what you say about some of the best players in the world.”

“He is still young, which is incredible because he looks like an experienced campaigner already. We are going to heard a lot about him in the future and in this world cup as I think he is going to be the top run scorer,” he added.

The South African great also termed off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's inclusion in the ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia as a smart move. With Axar Patel getting injured in the recently-concluded Asia Cup, Ashwin has put up a strong case by taking four wickets in two matches so far in the Australia series.

“Unbelievable move. Not so good for the other teams. Experienced, smart, plays the big moments really well. He has got an incredible skill and understands his game with both bat and ball," said ABD of Ashwin.

“He is a great addition to the team I don’t know why he was not there in the first place. I am a big fan, he is always a little bit controversial but he plays to win. He always get a big impact on the game. He loves to have the ball in his hand in the pressure moments, never shy away from big moments,” added de Villiers.

Notably, Ashwin hasn't been included in India's World Cup squad yet which was announced a while back with Axar Patel as the third spinner alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

The last date to make any changes to the squad for the teams without requiring permission from the ICC is September 28, a day after India play third and final ODI against Australia.

AB de Villiers picks THIS Indian batsman to be leading run scorer at World Cup, terms Ashwin's selection SMART

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag was not impressed with the way Shubman Gill gave away his wicket in the second ODI against Australia on September 24 in Indore. Gill, who scored 104, got out in the 35th over of the innings as India plundered their way to 399/5 in 50 overs.

Sehwag, however, was of the opinion that Gill missed out on a bigger score. The former India opener, who has a double hundred to his name at the same venue, said he could have scored even 200 today (match day).&nbsp;

“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn't have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn't have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” Sehwag said in a conversation with Cricbuzz.

“When you are in form and you are scoring runs then don't throw your wicket away. When he got out, there were 18 overs still remaining. Had he played for 9-10 overs more he could have completed his second double hundred. Rohit Sharma scored three double hundreds. He had the opportunity today. A 200 has been scored at this venue by a player named Sehwag, because it is that sort of a track,” he added.

Notably, Gill is in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/shubman-gill-breaks-these-records-with-century-against-australia-in-indore-639184">stellar form this year</a>, having scored 1,230 runs this calendar year in 20 matches and has five fifties to go with his five centuries.

As for the match, Shreyas Iyer also scored a brilliant century (105) while skipper KL Rahul (52) and Suryakumar Yadav (73 not out) provided late charges to India.

The Australian innings was marred by rain and they got a revised target of 317 in 33 overs but got all out for 217 in 28.2 overs, losing by 99 runs. For India, Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each.&nbsp;

India now lead the three-match ODI series 2-0 with the third ODI scheduled to be played on September 27.&nbsp;

Virender Sehwag not IMPRESSED with Shubman Gill despite century in Indore ODI vs Australia. Know Why

The Indian Team continued to dominate at home as they crushed Australia by 99 runs in a rain-hit match to win the second ODI in Indore on Sunday. With this win, they clinched the three-match ODI series 2-0. Twin tons from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer and a stunning comeback by all-rounders in the second innings propelled India to a massive victory.

Asked to bat first, the Indian batters took on the challenge and went berserk on the flat Indore surface. After losing Ruturaj Gaikwad early, returning Shreyas Iyer and the man in form, Shubman Gill stitched a 200-run-stand for the second wicket.

While Iyer notched up his third ODI hundred – his first since returning to the Indian Team following an extended injury layoff, Gill completed his fifth ODI century this year, fourth in India in 2023 – a record in itself.&nbsp;

KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan also contributed with handy knocks, with Rahul completing his fifty, but it was Suryakumar Yadav, who hogged all the limelight till the end. His four sixes off four balls to Cameron Green brought the crowd to its feet, as he also scored his back-to-back fifty in this series.

Scoring 72 off 37 balls, including hitting six sixes and as many fours, SKY propelled India to register its highest ODI total (399 for 5) against Australia in this format.

In reply, Australia got off to a worst-possible start, losing opener Matthew Short and their best batter, Steve Smith, off successive balls in the second over. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne tried saving the sinking ship, but both lost the plot when play resumed following a halt due to rain.

Ravi Ashwin, brought back to the side at the last minute, dismissed three batters in two overs to put Australia on the mat. His partner-in-crime, Ravindra Jadeja, also contributed with a couple of wickets before it all fell on the tail.&nbsp;

Sean Abbott, a force to reckon with the bat in hand, scored a stunning fifty of just 29 balls to keep Australia in the game. Shami, who picked five wickets in the previous tie, removed Josh Hazlewood and broke the stand.

Jadeja completed the formalities as India won the clash by 99 runs (DLS Method).&nbsp;

India crush Australia by 99 runs in record-setting Indore tie, win ODI series

Twin centuries from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer and a successive ODI fifty by Suryakumar Yadav propelled India to their highest inning total against Australia in this format – 399 for five. The second ODI in Indore witnessed several records getting broken, with opener Gill surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in an elite list. With India already leading 1-0 in the three-match series, this total will work as an extra cushion for them to gain an advantage and go for the series win.

Asked to bat first, India made light work of the second-string Aussie bowling line-up, with Gill being the aggressor. Josh Hazlewood’s first ODI in India in the lead-up to the World Cup saw him breaking the opening stand, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad on just eight. What followed next brought the Australian Team to their knees.

With all to play for, given what was at stake, Shreyas Iyer took the onus on himself and attacked from the word go. His exploits were enough to keep the visitors at bay, as alongside Gill, the pair stitched a 200-run stand.&nbsp;

While Iyer completed his third ODI hundred, his first since returning to the setup following a lengthy injury layoff, Gill, the batter on song, struck his fourth hundred in India this calendar year, surpassing legendary Sachin Tendulkar on the list. With this, Gill also completed his fifth ODI century in 2023.

After Australia managed to pick their wickets, Captain KL Rahul and keeper-batter Ishan Kishan carried forward the momentum. Kishan scored a quickfire 31 off 18 balls before falling to Adam Zampa.&nbsp;

<h2>Time for SKY to shine</h2>

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s best T20I batter, has come off brilliant with the bat in this ongoing ODI series, hitting two back-to-back fifties. While the one in Mohali helped India chase the target with five wickets in hand, this one in Indore broke all the shackles and narratives of him being unable to deliver in the 50-over format.&nbsp;

Against Cameron Green during the fag end of the innings, SKY produced his best hitting, smashing him for four consecutive sixes.

Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer hit tons in Indore as India register their highest score against Australia in ODIs

India's opening batsman Shubman Gill continues to have a stellar 2023 with another century to his name. Gill scored a fantastic 104 off 97 balls in the second ODI against Australia in Indore on Sunday, September 24 - his fifth in the ongoing year. With the century, Gill has broken several records and here's a look at all of them:

Gill equals record of most centuries at home (4) in a single calendar year. The record was previously held by Australia's Ricky Ponting who had hit four centuries at home in 2007 and Pakistan great Zaheer Abbas who had achieved the feat in 1982.

Gill now has most centuries at home (4) in a single calendar year for an Indian. He broke the previous record of three centuries at home in a single calendar year by an Indian which was held by Sachin Tendulkar (1996) and Virat Kohli (2017), and Rohit Sharma (2017).

Gill also became the fourth batter to score 800 runs or more (802) at home in a single calendar year in ODIs. He also pipped Sachin Tendulkar's 783 in 2007 and Virat Kohli's 716 runs in 2013 for most runs at home in one calendar year. Shubman Gill breaks THESE records with century against Australia in Indore

Australia’s wicketkeeper batter Josh Inglis has reflected on his stance in the current Australian side after impressing in the first ODI against India on Friday, September 22. Inglis, 28, is likely to be Australia’s second-choice wicketkeeper after Alex Carey who was rested for the opening match. Aussies lost the opening match against India by five wickets with Inglis playing a 45-run knock in Mohali. The defeat also saw Australia trail 0-1 in the three-match series with the second contest taking place on Sunday.

<h2>Inglis reflects on performance</h2>

“In the past, I have played purely as a batsman,” Inglis said.

IND vs AUS ODI Series: India draw first blood in Pre-World Cup showdown; Gill, Shami shine

Former India World Cup winner Suresh Raina has backed Shubman Gill to explode in the upcoming ODI World Cup in India as they get ready for the carnival of cricket. Raina, member of the 2011 World Cup winning squad, reckons Gill has all the tools in his arsenal to replicate Rohit Sharma’s form from the 2019 edition of the World Cup. The current Indian skipper scored four hundreds at the tournament and led his nation to the semifinals before an excruciating exit in the semifinal against New Zealand brought his campaign to an end.

<h2>Raina backs Gill</h2>

"He's been consistent for a year and a half. He struggled in the middle against West Indies, but the way he's come back and scored good runs in the Asia Cup. He is looking positive, using good footwork, and from getting out at 40 against the West Indies, he is now comfortably hitting 50s and even 100s. He'll be one of the most important players at the World Cup," Suresh Raina told Jio Cinema.

So far in the calendar year, Gill has amassed nine hundreds – six for India and three for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans (GT). He is currently enjoying the form of his life that also saw him win the Orange Cap at the IPL 2023 with 890 runs. According to Raina, the kind of form Gill is in, he could replicate the success story of Rohit.

Rohit had scored 648 runs in nine matches with a best of 140 against Pakistan in Manchester. Alongside his four hundreds, he also scored 57 against Australia at the Oval to stamp his authority on the tournament. Gill in 2023 has scored six international hundreds with a double hundred against New Zealand in January.

India’s ODI World Cup campaign will get underway in Chennai on Sunday, October 8 against record champions Australia, who will be buying for their sixth title. ICC ODI Rankings: Shubman Gill closes gap with No. 1 ranked Babar Azam ahead of Australia series

India batsman Shubman Gill accepted that he should have taken India home against Bangladesh in Asia Cup Super Four game on September 15. The opening batsman scored a magnificent 121 off 131 balls - his first century in Asia Cup (ODI format) but fell 57 runs short of 266-run target.

The game, however, had no effect on standings as India had already made it to the final by winning games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka while Bangladesh were already out of contention. This consolation win was also Bangladesh's first against India in the regional tournament since 2012. Speaking at the post-match ceremony, Gill said that he 'miscalculated' and should not have batted that aggressively. Gill, who fell to Bangladesh spinner Mahedi Hasan in 44th over of the chase, had hit the bowler for a six on the previous ball before being out.

"Sometimes, there is so much adrenaline when you are batting, you miscalculate. It was a miscalculation on my part."

“But when I got out and there was a lot of time left, and if I would have batted not that aggressive then we should have gotten over the line. But these are learnings, and fortunately this game wasn't the final,” said the batter after the match.

Axar Patel (42) and Shardul Thakur although added 40 runs for the eight wicket to take India on the brink of victory with just 17 runs needed of last 12 balls. Mustafizur Rahman then bowled the double-wicket penultimate over, sending both&nbsp;Patel and Thakur back to dash all hopes for India. The Men in Blue eventually folded out for 259 in 49.5 runs, handing Bangladesh a six-run win.

Earlier, both team had made five changes each in the Playing XI from their last game to give rest to big players ahead of next month's ODI World Cup.

Asia Cup: 'Miscalculation on my part,' says Shubman Gill after failing to take India home against Bangladesh

India opener Shubman Gill starred with the bat against Bangladesh on Friday in Colombo, hitting a marvelous 121, but failed to guide his team to victory as the Tigers stood tall, winning the game by six runs. Having completed his fifth ODI hundred, alongside hitting a double hundred earlier this year, Gill has been among runs and remains hopeful of carrying his Midas touch to the home World Cup, starting October 5.

Against Bangladesh in Colombo, Gill deployed a cautious approach before unleashing the attack in the middle overs. While he managed to survive the pace scare earlier when Tanzim was bowling peaches with the new ball, Gill took on the spinners on the slower-turning Premadasa track, showing off his ability to deliver across all conditions.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media after the last Super Four game in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, Gill said the instructions were clear on what to do and how to approach the chase on this track the other night. Detailing a little on this, Gill added the chat before the start of the innings was to reduce the dot ball percentage and play late and close to the body as possible.

"On slow wickets, there are a lot of dot balls. Our chat as a batting group is to reduce dot balls and rotate strike," Gill said during the post-match presser.&nbsp;

"The track was slow and was taking turn, so taking singles is not easy, especially for new batters. The talk was about playing it late and close to the body."&nbsp;

"On slow wickets, more runs are scored square of the wicket and less down the ground. So, the aim was to do that," the India opener added.

<h2>Gill ready for CWC challenge</h2>

Indian pitches, during one and a half month CWC, will get slower, with spinners playing a major role during the fag end of the tournament. Having suffered the wrath of struggling against some quality spin bowling against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in recent outings, Gill underlines the challenges Team India needs to work on during the marquee event.

"We had a camp in Bangalore before coming here and practised on similar surfaces," Gill said. "The World Cup is such a long tournament, and as we go deep into the tournament, the wickets will get slower. It is not easy for batsmen coming in to rotate strike and minimise dot balls. That's what as a batting unit and bowling group we are looking to overcome."

Gill, in 2023, averages more than 68, with 1025 runs in 17 matches so far.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill unveils plan on how to dominate on slower pitches during World Cup 2023

Bangladesh emerged on the top against India by six runs in the final Asia Cup 2023 Super Four game in Colombo. Three wickets to Mustafizur and two each to Tanzim Hasan and Mahedi Hasan helped Bangladesh end India's winning run in this tournament.

Team India won the toss and elected to bowl first in their last Super Four clash in Colombo. With first-choice seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj rested for this dead rubber, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Shami were roped in the XI. Alongside returning Shardul Thakur, Shami wreaked havoc inside the first ten overs, picking three wickets. Mehidy Hasan Miraz departed soon after as Bangladesh looked in trouble.

Captain Shakib Al Hasan played a skipper's role as he took the attack to the Indian bowlers. With Towhid Hridoy, Shakib added 101 runs for the fifth wicket but couldn't reach his hundred as Thakur bowled him on 80. However, he had laid the platform for the lower order to come and strike, and much to their pleasure, that only happened.&nbsp;

Nasum Ahmed made the most of that momentum and scored a brilliant 44, and with handy contributions from the tail, Bangladesh posted a fighting total of 265 for eight in the first innings.

India, in their reply, got off to a poor start, with captain Rohit Sharma departing on a second-ball duck. Seamer Tanzim Hasam bamboozled the Indian top order with his quality spell, removing debutant Tilak Varma clean bowled on five soon after.&nbsp;

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill steadied the ship with a controlled approach but couldn't accelerate as Rahul gave away his wicket on 19. Ishan Kishan, who retained his place in the side after his exploits against Pakistan in the first group game, also got out cheaply on five.

Suryakumar Yadav, coming in at six, couldn't leave an impact as he was sent packing on 26 off 34 balls. With India reeling at 139 for five at one stage, the onus fell on Shubman Gill to bail the team out of trouble.

The batting superstar opened his arms and went after each bowler, completing his first hundred of this Asia Cup and fifth overall. Even after losing Jadeja bowled to Mustafizur, Gill didn't put brakes on but instead activated the counter-attacking mode to keep Bangladesh at bay.

However, like how all good things come to an end, his innings also ended on 121, which included eight fours and five sixes.

Two bowling all-rounders, Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur, kept India alive in the game, with Patel showing off his six-hitting skills. Though both looked strong to power India to complete a tense chase, getting out to seasoned campaigner Mustafizur in the penultimate over broke their momentum.

Tanzim Hasam's last over saw Bangladesh end India's winning run in this Asia Cup as they won the clash by six runs.

India will now face Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday in Colombo.

Shubman Gill's 121 goes in vain as bowlers power Bangladesh to 6-run win in Asia Cup dead rubber

Shubman Gill has his eyes set on the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, which will kick off in India on October 05. The Indian opener, who is currently playing&nbsp;in the Asia Cup 2023 edition, says that his aim is to win the home ODI WC title, where the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will open their campaign on October 08, in Chennai, versus Australia. Gill will be one of the most important batters for India in the mega event, especially given how impressive he has been in 2023.

In the ongoing calendar year, Gill has a double ton, two centuries and four half-centuries in the 50-over format. In addition, he struck three hundreds in IPL 2023 and scored his maiden T20I ton earlier&nbsp;this year. Moreover, he also slammed an impressive 128 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23 edition during the home Tests against Australia. Thus, Gill will be confident going into his maiden World Cup and will hope for more big knocks in the games in the run-up to the WC opener.&nbsp;

Speaking to the official broadcasters during the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup, in Colombo, Gill said&nbsp;that his goal was to win the World Cup. The 24-year-old mentioned, "The most important goal for me as a player right now is to win World Cup 2023. I recall being young when India won the World Cup in 2011. The mindset is to swiftly read the wicket and access the positions."

Gill added, “As a batsman, it is critical to quickly access the position and understand the speed. So the planning and play are all based on that. Mindset plays an important role as one has to switch mentally, like from an ODI mentality to a T20 one. The faster you switch, the faster your body adapts; thus, I believe being able to mentally switch is important."

The right-hander has been among the runs in the ongoing continental tournament -- jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. While missing out in India's group stage clash versus Pakistan, he came to his own with a sublime 67 not out versus Nepal and struck a praiseworthy 58 in India's ongoing Super 4 tie versus arch-rivals Pakistan. The game kicked off on Sunday (September 10), in Colombo, with Babar Azam &amp; Co. opting to bowl first. India rode on Gill and captain Rohit Sharma's&nbsp;(56) fifties to stitch a solid 121-run opening stand.&nbsp;

After Gill and Rohit's departures, India were well-placed at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs with Virat Kohli (8 not out) and KL Rahul (28-ball 17*) in the middle before rain and wet outfield pushed the game to the reserve day. The proceedings will resume on Monday (September 11) with India looking for a big score.

Asia Cup: Most important goal is to win World Cup 2023, says Indian opener Shubman Gill

Pakistan’s poor show in the field continued as they showcased their vulnerability once again during their Asia Cup 2023 contest against India. The high-voltage clash taking place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 10 saw them provide one of the unwanted moments of Asia Cup 2023. An edge from Shubman Gill flew past the Pakistan slip fielders as they failed to capitalise on the&nbsp;moment.

<h2>What happened with Gill?</h2>

On the third ball of the eight over, a wonderful delivery from Naseem Shah was edged by Gill and it bisected Iftikhar Ahmed (in first slip) and Salman Agha (second slip). However, much to everyone's surprise the ball was not clutched by any fielder and Gill survived due to the lapse. The ball easily flew past the slip fielders while no one attempted to catch the ball.

It reminded fans of Pakistan’s poor show in the field, where they have developed a reputation for poor show. In 2008, a similar incident took place when Pakistan were playing West Indies in UAE. Pakistan fielder Saeed Ajmal failed to catch a lofted shot from Chris Gayle as he and Shoaib Malik approached. In a funny case, the ball dropped in between Shoaib and Saeed much to the frustration of the Pakistan side while giving a meme moment to fans.

An edge from Shubman Gill flew past the Pakistan slip fielders as they failed to capitalise on the moment. Iftikhar Ahmed, what were you doing there? 😂😂😂😂 #INDvsPAK #IndiavsPakistan #IndiavsPak #AsiaCup pic.twitter.com/isilAYarw5 — (Positive) AboePP (@aboepp05) September 10, 2023 × What happened with Gill? Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan show vulnerability in fielding, fail to clutch Shubman Gill nick in slips | WATCH

Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has predicted the highest run-getter in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023&nbsp;being held in India. The forthcoming mega event will kick off in the subcontinent on October 05 with the defending champions Jos Buttler-led England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad whereas hosts Rohit Sharma-led India face Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

Kallis, a legend who represented South Africa in 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is, feels England captain Buttler will end up as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming edition. In the last edition, in England and Wales, Rohit Sharma ended with 648 runs -- most by any batter.

"I think Jos Butler will be the leading run scorer. An outside call, but I fancy him in those conditions. Along with England having a good World Cup, I think, um, me, he's going to be the one guy that stands up," said Kallis while speaking to the ICC.

Buttler has played 165 ODIs for the Three Lions, scoring&nbsp;4,647 runs at a strike rate of&nbsp;117.97 along with 11 tons and 24 fifties. He has a lot of experience of playing in India, thanks to his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overall, he&nbsp;has scored 3,223 runs from 96 IPL matches, at an impressive strike-rate of 148.32.&nbsp;

However, Buttler doesn't have a good ODI record in India -- having managed&nbsp;83 runs in eight matches so far at an average of&nbsp;11. Thus, he has a task to improve his record and help England successfully defend their title. The one-time winners have a plethora of superstars in their line-up, such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali, etc. Having already led England to the championship in his only ICC event as captain, during the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler will feel confident leading the English line-up in the upcoming big-ticket event.

Other batters who can end up as the highest run-getter in CWC '23 are Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Babar Azam, Quinton de Kock, David Warner, etc.

CWC '23: SA legend Jacques Kallis predicts THIS English star to be the leading run-getter

Star India batter Shubman Gill has opened up on the valuable presence of skipper Rohit Sharma at the top as they prepare for an important next three months for the national side. The Indian team is gearing up for the penultimate battle before the ODI World Cup as they prepare for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Gill, who is expected to play a key role in the Indian team for both tournaments, highlighted the importance of Rohit before and how he has helped him enjoy his cricket.

<h2>Gill full of praise for Rohit</h2>

"It feels great to be able to open up with him, especially knowing that all the focus is on him. He's someone who likes the other batters to go and just express himself and play the way they want to play the game. So in that nature, he gives the players full freedom for how they want to express their game," Gill told ICC.

Gill has been in superb form in 2023, having scored eight hundreds in all tournaments including the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, it is with the national team where he has enjoyed the presence of skipper Rohit, who has helped him excel and enjoy his cricket. The talisman from Punjab has scored five international hundreds in 2023 while he scored a ton at the end of last year against Bangladesh.

<h2>Gill’s superb run of form</h2>

Gill has all but cemented his place in the Indian team and is expected to open the innings alongside Rohit in the Asia Cup and in the build-up to the ODI World Cup. Gill is the favoured batter to open along with Rohit, while Ishan Kishan is another option who can partner the Gujarat Titans man.

So far, in 27 ODIs for the national team, Gill&nbsp;has scored 1437 runs for India with a best of 208 against New Zealand in January. He so far has four hundreds and six fifties with the national team and averages 62.47 in the format. Interestingly, he could join the likes of Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh to win both the U-19 and senior 50-over World Cups. Gill was the Player of the Tournament in 2018 when India won their fourth title at the junior level.

CWC 2023: Shubman Gill full of praise for THIS key batter, says 'he gives players full freedom'

The BCCI is contemplating resting more star players for the Ireland T20Is, with the latest reports suggesting the board might also rest stand-in T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill to manage their workload ahead of the packed calendar.

The BCCI is contemplating resting more star players for the Ireland T20Is, with the latest reports suggesting the board might also rest stand-in T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill to manage their workload ahead of the packed calendar. Considering regular players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will remain out of contention from this short series, the addition of these two players to the list indicates BCCI is not risking anyone as Asia Cup and home World Cup approaches. Considering both are prime players in India’s white-ball scheme for the 2023 World Cup, managing their workload is BCCI’s priority. Given the ongoing West Indies series ends with the final two T20Is in Florida on August 12 and 13 and the team scheduled to leave for Dublin for the slated three T20Is starting August 18, all will fall on how these two players are feeling, per a comment from BCCI member on the matter. ALSO READ: Top star Jasprit Bumrah's absence is being felt dearly, feels ex-Australia quick Jason Gillespie As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), a source close to the information, without revealing any details, said, "Nothing is finalised yet, and it will also depend on how Hardik is feeling after the One-Dayers and T20s in the West Indies. There is travelling involved and only a short turnaround of three days before one flies from Florida to Dublin." "With the World Cup being of primary importance, one has to factor in his workload. Let's not forget he will be Rohit's deputy in the World Cup," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. With India set to face West Indies in eight (three ODIs and five T20Is) matches in 18 days, Hardik will play a key role in it, and so will Shubman. Considering tight scheduling and back-to-back tours – which includes travelling to Ireland and then to Colombo for the Asia Cup 2023 (from August 31 to September 17), BCCI could opt to rest several top players – who are sure starters for the World Cup. All eyes on Bumrah’s return While the newly-appointed selection committee is yet to finalise the squad for the Ireland T20Is, several reports have suggested Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to the Indian side for the first time since September 2022. With Bumrah sending down eight to ten overs regularly at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, sources close to the update feel the ace seamer has almost regained complete fitness and could return sooner than expected. With all eyes on Asia Cup, World Cup, Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill could be rested for Ireland T20Is - Reports

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8&nbsp;courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The total proved to be inadequate as Yashasvi Jaiswal (84 not out) and Shubman Gill (77) stitched a mammoth 165-run first-wicket stand to chase down the score in 17 overs.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh (3 for 38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 26) did the job for India to keep the Windies below the 200-run mark before Jaiswal-Gill stood tall. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a&nbsp;dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim.

<h2>'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting'</h2>

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting."

He added, "They need to figure a few things out and if they do, they will do great things for India."

The two teams will now meet on Sunday in the decider before a few players return home while the rest travel to Ireland for the three-match series. The winner of Sunday’s contest will win the series as India went level at 2-2 after today’s win. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. IND vs WI 4th T20I: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal help India level series with dominating win

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has extended his advice to Shubman Gill after his string of failures in the ongoing series against the West Indies. With eight hundreds in 2023, Gill was in a rich vein of form going into the series against the Caribbean side but has seen his stock go down with poor performances. According to Jaffer, Gill needs to adapt to the new surfaces early if he is to achieve success away from home.

<h2>Jaffer’s advice to Gill</h2>

"These West Indies surfaces are like that, you have to wait for it and can't just keep hitting on the rise which Shubman likes. But one thing he needs to understand is he is not going to get conditions like Ahmedabad everywhere. So the better he gets used to the other surfaces, and adapts to the surfaces it's going to do him wonders," Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo.

In his last six innings, Gill has been dismissed for under 10 runs on four occasions. His highest score on the tour is 85 runs he scored in the third ODI at Tarouba and has been far from convincing. Gill has scored 187 runs in nine innings during the West Indies tour and has been urged by a few fans to be dropped after the lean patch.

"Shubman is not somebody who goes from ball one. He is not that kind of a player so he takes his time at the start. He has a habit of reaching towards the ball when the ball is not coming on," Jaffer added.

<h2>India trailing 1-2 in series</h2>

The Indian team is all set to take on West Indies in the fourth T20I on Saturday, August 12 in Florida and are expected to field Gill again in the team. India are currently trailing in the five-match T20I series 1-2, having lost the first two matches. IND vs WI: Wasim Jaffer gives advice to Shubman Gill after string of failures - get used to other surface

India’s T20I side has landed in the USA for the remaining two T20Is against West Indies. Having lost the first two matches, India was staring at an unlikely series loss; however, with them winning the third game by seven wickets, more importantly in quite a dominating fashion, India now eye two wins in two matches to turn the tables. For India to deliver in these do-or-die clashes, batters need to step up, specifically out-of-touch Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson.&nbsp;

Both batters have looked like pale shadows of themselves in limited outings on this tour. While Sanju and Gill scored a fifty each during the white-ball leg, both failed to convert starts into huge scores as India struggled big time while batting.&nbsp;

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer opines considering what is at stake, Sanju and Gill need to pull up their socks and score big in the remaining two games in the USA. With wickets likely to assist batters, Jaffer feels they won’t get a better track to return to form and sail India through.

“He (Samson) is due some runs. This is a high-scoring ground where the ball will come onto the bat, and he will like batting here. Whether it's him or Shubman Gill or Jaiswal, if you're in poor form, you won't get a better pitch than this. So, they need to make the most of it,” said Jaffer on ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

<h2>Jaffer warns India of Pooran, Powell</h2>

Nicholas Pooran is having the time of his life. His purple patch has brought him success, and he continues to make Indian bowlers suffer on the field. Highly impressed by his emergence as the top batter, in this format especially, Jaffer said Pooran is West Indies’ trump card, and India must remain aware of this threat.

Jaffer also showered praises on captain Rovman Powell, who as per him, is their next-best batter in the side.

“It seems like the responsibility of captaincy has had a positive impact on him. After Nicholas Pooran if there's any batter on whom West Indies are dependent on, then it's Rovman Powell."

“Nicholas Pooran is their trump card. He is crucial to their chances of scoring big. Because other batters apart from Powell haven't been able to step up, and they need to do better,” Jaffer added.

India will face West Indies in the fourth T20I on Saturday, August 12, at Lauderhill in Florida.

Low on runs Samson, Gill can make it big in USA as India eye to level T20I series against West Indies

Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels Rohit Sharma-led India is the most balanced side at home. Hussain feels the Indian team outperforms every visiting line-up in the purest format of the game due to their perfect blend of youth and experience while playing in home conditions. It is to be noted that the Indian team has not lost a Test series on home soil since late 2012, when they lost 1-2 to England in four Tests.

<h2>'The balance of their side at home is just wonderful'</h2>

Speaking on the ICC Review, Hussain said, "They are brilliant at home...and the balance of their side at home is just wonderful. They've got senior players like Rohit and obviously Virat (Kohli) and they are just world class players and they've got youngsters coming in, like Shubman (Gill), who's going to be a superstar."

Hussain further opined that the Indian team will become a more formidable unit once Jasprit Bumrah achieves full fitness. The wily Indian speedster has been out of cricketing action since September 2022. He is set to make his much-awaited national comeback during India's three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, later this month.

In this regard, Hussain concluded, "If Jasprit (Bumrah) can come back as well, one of the great multi-format bowlers there is at the moment, if not the best, when fit. So, they've got those senior players and youngsters, and with the ball in India, those three all-rounders, and they are genuine all rounders in India - Axar (Patel), (Ravindra) Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin. That, for me, is a really balanced side because then you've got a No.7."

At present, India hold the No. 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings. They featured in the WTC final in both the cycles, since its inception in late 2019, but failed to lift the coveted Test mace, having lost the summit clash to New Zealand and Australia, respectively.

Currently, India are preparing hard for the forthcoming ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November. Their next Test assignment will be post the ODI WC, i.e. a two-match Test series versus hosts South Africa in December.

<h2>Kishan underlines Gill’s importance</h2>

"He’s a tremendous player, I’ve seen how he middles the ball. Seeing him hitting it out of the middle gives me a lot of confidence as well. Always important to win at this level, and the learnings from these games are important. We were looking to get early wickets and didn't let any ball go. Everyone is looking very positive," Kishan said in a post-match interaction after helping India win the series.

The dynamic star from Mumbai Indians, Ishan was instrumental in India’s success as they beat the hosts to win the series. He played a crucial knock of 76 runs in the decisive final ODI while also scoring 55 and 52 in the previous two ODIs. His performances saw him awarded Player of the Series while his partner Shubman Gill was awarded Player of the Match.

Kishan also commented on the T20 World Cup and thinks it is a bridge too far and is not thinking about it. With senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma out of contention for the shortest format, Kishan is the front-runner to be in the first team and will be a key member for the Indian side when they return to the Caribbean Islands in 2024.

"I’ve played a few tournaments here and I know how the wickets play here, not really thinking about the next T20 World Cup. Focusing on the upcoming tournaments, you know how one tournament can change your life. We’re just focusing on that now," said Kishan.

IND vs WI 3rd ODI: Ishan Kishan underlines Shubman Gill's role, says 'gives me a lot of confidence'

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by 200 runs in the third and final ODI to win the three-match series 2-1. The visitors won the series opener by five wickets and lost the second and penultimate tie by six wickets before dominating proceedings in the series decider. Once again, regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were rested but a second-string&nbsp;Indian team, who lost the second match rather disappointingly, displayed a strong performance to clinch the series.

There were several impressive performances from the Indian camp in the final ODI. Batting first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 77, Shubman Gill's 85, Sanju Samson's 51 and stand-in captain Hardik's 52-ball 70 to post 351 for 5. In reply, the Windies bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs with Shardul Thakur claiming a four-for whereas Mukesh Kumar returned with a three-wicket haul.&nbsp;

As Rohit and Kohli were rested for the final two games, the Indian team tested the likes of Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, etc. Talking about Samson, he came out to bat at No. 4 and returned with a sparkling 41-ball 51, studded with 2 fours and 4 sixes at 124.39. After his high-quality knock, Samson said that it is 'challenging' being an Indian cricketer.

Talking to the broadcasters after India posted a mammoth 351/5, Samson said, "Being an Indian cricketer is challenging, I have played domestic cricket for the last 8-9 years and for India, here and there, so it gives you a bit of understanding of playing in different positions. It is the number of overs you get and it is not about batting position so you have to prepare accordingly."

“It feels really great to spend some time in the middle, score some runs and contribute for your country. I had different plans for different players, I wanted to use my feet and dominate the lengths of the bowlers," he added.

Samson has played 13 ODIs, scoring 390 runs with three half-centuries at an average of 55.71. He remains in contention to make it to India's 15-man squad for the ODI World Cup, to be held later this year in October-November.

Being an Indian cricketer is challenging, says Sanju Samson after a blistering 51 in IND vs WI 3rd ODI

Rohit Sharma-led India beat West Indies by five wickets in the series opener of the three ODIs, being held in the Caribbean island. With the 2023 ODI World Cup set to be held in October-November, in India, Rohit &amp; Co. are now left with&nbsp;only a handful of ODIs in the run-up to the mega event at home. Thus, the series versus the lowly-ranked West Indies is crucial in their preparations.&nbsp;

The Men in Blue stood tall and dominated proceedings in the first ODI, dismissing the Windies for a paltry 114 after opting to bowl first, and chased down the score in 22.5 overs. Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and Kuldeep Yadav's 4 for 6 led the show for India before Ishan Kishan's 52 and unbeaten cameos from Jadeja-Rohit took India past the finish line.&nbsp;

During the run-chase, India shuffled their batting order as Ishan opened with Shubman Gill whereas Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and Jadeja were also promoted. India's two experienced campaigners such as Virat Kohli and Rohit were demoted&nbsp;and Hitman explained the reason behind the move.&nbsp;

<h2>'We will keep trying these things whenever possible'</h2>

At the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed, "We wanted to give game time to the ODI guys who have come in, we will keep trying those things whenever possible. To restrict them to 115, we knew we could try these guys and give them a go. I don't think they'll get many chances like this."

Rohit came out to bat at No. 7 whereas Kohli didn't feature in the run-chase. On him batting at No. 7, the Indian captain pointed out, "I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days."

With Rohit and Kohli experienced enough, India is focusing on giving their middle and lower-order batters enough chances -- wherever available -- in the run-up to the ODI WC, which starts on October 05. While only Ishan (52) made full use of batting at the top, India will be happy with other middle and lower-order batters also being exposed in the middle. They will hope for more such chances where they can&nbsp;experiment&nbsp;in the upcoming ODIs.

The second and penultimate ODI kicks off on Saturday (July 29) as Rohit &amp; Co. will hope to claim&nbsp;an unassailable lead.

IND vs WI: Rohit Sharma explains why India shuffled their batting line-up in 1st ODI amid WC preparations

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished West Indies by five wickets in the series opener of the three-ODI series on Thursday (July 27) in Barbados. Opting to bowl first, India rode on Kuldeep Yadav's 4 for 6 and Ravindra Jadeja's 3 for 37 to dismiss Shai Hope-led Windies for a paltry 114 in 23 overs. In reply, India shuffled their batting order considerably and lost wickets at regular intervals but still won comfortably in 22.5 overs.

There was plenty to cheer for Team India in the ODI series opener. While the spin duo Kuldeep and Jadeja excelled, India's fielding was also up to the mark with Kohli pulling off a stunner. As Jadeja induced a big edge&nbsp;off Romario Shepherd, Kohli -- stationed at second slip -- reacted in a jiffy and plucked a one-handed stunner.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shubman Gill, who was at first slip, gave an unmissable reaction. Watch: Shubman Gill reacts after Virat Kohli pulls off a one-handed stunner in IND vs WI 1st ODI

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has tipped Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill to take Indian cricket forward once the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retire. Both Kohli and Rohit are in the last phase of their careers. Thus, Team India is focused in grooming the youngsters to keep the team in good stead by the time Kohli, Rohit, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. retire.

<h2>'Jaiswal and Gill&nbsp;strong contenders to take Indian cricket's batting&nbsp;forward after Rohit&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kohli'</h2>

Thus, Jaffer feels young stars such as Jaiswal and Gill have it in them to take over the baton from Kohli and Rohit once the duo steps aside. During a discussion on JioCinema, he stated, "One is Yashasvi Jaiswal. I see him as a three-format player. He has performed amazingly well in the IPL and has made an excellent start in Test cricket."

"Shubman Gill is the second name I will take. If we talk only about batting, I see these two players as very strong contenders who will take Indian cricket forward after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,"&nbsp;Jaffer further opined.

In addition, Jaffer also picked Gujarat Titans' (GT) Sai Sudharsan as another strong candidate to handle India's batting responsibilities in future. "Sai Sudharsan is a player who I have liked a lot, the way he has played in the IPL. After that, he has scored a century against Pakistan A in the emerging teams' tournament that is going on. So I feel he can become a very good player in the future," added the former batter who represented India in 31 Tests and two ODIs.

Jaiswal and Gill have been in splendid form in 2023. Gill has scored hundreds across formats -- including a double ton in ODIs -- and was the Orange Cap winner for most runs (890) in IPL 2023. Jaiswal also ended this year's IPL with 625 runs, including a best of 124, and scored a sublime 171 in his debut Test in the ongoing West Indies tour.

Sudharshan, on the other hand, had a good run in IPL 2023, followed by consistent performances in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Recently, he also scored a century versus Pakistan in the ongoing Emerging Asia Cup tournament.

Jaiswal, Gill will take Indian cricket forward after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, predicts Wasim Jaffer

India are gearing up for the second and final Test versus West Indies, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, which commences on Thursday (July 20). After a mammoth innings and 141-run win in the series opener, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be confident in taking on the depleted hosts. All eyes will once again be on India's promising youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal debuted in the first Test and returned with a brilliant 171. Thus, it will be interesting to see if Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar get a chance in the final Test.

At present, Indian cricket is in an interesting phase. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, etc. are in the last phase of their careers but have a big role to play in shaping up the younger lot. In this regard, Captain Rohit told reporters that the transition will take place sooner or later, but emphasised the importance of the role of seniors in grooming the juniors.

<h2>'Our role is important as we have to give them clarity'</h2>

While highlighting the potential of the emerging players, Rohit stated, "Transition has to happen, whether today or tomorrow but I am happy that our boys who are coming in are doing well. And our role is important as we have to give them role clarity. Now it's up to them how they want to prepare and perform for the team. ... And we rely on those individuals and obviously they are the future of Indian cricket and they will take Indian cricket to greater heights."

The upcoming second Test will be the 100th face-off between India and West Indies in the purest format of the game. In this regard, Rohit said, "It’s an honour to be taking the Indian team into this game and it doesn’t happen every day. The two teams have so much history, and so much good cricket played. I will expect no different in this Test. I am sure they (Windies) will bounce back and it will be exciting for both teams."

India lead the series 1-0 and will aim for a whitewash to further move ahead in the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle.

WI vs IND: Rohit Sharma talks about role of seniors in grooming youngsters as India aims for smooth transition

India had a new number three in Shubman Gill in over a decade during the first Test against West Indies. Gill had replaced India stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara for the slot and those can be pretty big shoes to fill. While the suggestion to bat at number three came from Gill, he could not make much impact in his maiden innings, scoring 6 off 11 balls.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour, speaking to reporters after India's win in the first Test, explained the rationale behind Gill asking to bat at one down position.&nbsp;

"Three openers were supposed to play, so one had to go at No. 3 and the proposal came from Shubman's end as his rationale was that he had played all his cricket for Punjab and India A at either No. 3 or 4 and that's his real slot in longer format is that," Rathour said at a press conference.

While Gill may have failed to leave any mark in a Test where top three of four players from India scored at least a fifty, Rathour was confident of Gill's abilities at number three.

"We can't judge him on basis of one innings. He has a lot of time. He has the technique and temperament to play time if required and can also play an attacking game when a move on is needed. He can move the game forward. That is what we need at No. 3 as it can be advantageous," Rathour added.

Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal (171) and Rohit Sharma (103) had scored a century each as openers while Virat Kohli scored 76 at number four as India amassed 421 runs in their first innings.

Young Jaiswal was given Player of the Match award for scoring a ton in his debut game. Apart from him, veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin took 12 wickets in the match.
