On Wednesday (February 01), Hardik Pandya-led India thumped New Zealand by a whopping 168 runs in the third and final T20I at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad to clinch the series 2-1. After losing the series opener in Ranchi, the Men in Blue won a low-scoring thriller in Lucknow before wrapping up the series without dropping any sweat following Shubman Gill's record-breaking ton. Gill continued his rich vein of form versus the Kiwis -- having already scored a double hundred in the three ODIs -- to score his maiden ton in the format and take India to 234/4. During the NZ run-chase, early wickets and Suryakumar Yadav's stunning catches dented Mitchell Santner & Co. as the fate of the contest was out in no time.

Winning the toss, India opted to bat first with Umran Malik coming in place of Yuvzendra Chahal. Gill's first fifty came off 35 balls and the next off mere 19 deliveries as he created havoc in front of a jam-packed stadium in Ahmedabad. Rahul Tripathi's 22-ball 44 set the tone for the Indian innings and allowed Gill to take some time before he launched onto the poor deliveries. He remained unbeaten on 126, off 63 balls, striking at a whopping 200 along with 12 fours and 7 sixes. He was immaculate against the pacers, with his timely pulls, drives, flicks, etc., as India reached a mammoth total in 20 overs.

In reply, NZ's run-chase never got going. Hardik removed dangerman Finn Allen with an edge as SKY completed a good catch. Arshdeep Singh joined in and claimed two quick wickets with Hardik and Umran Malik adding to Kiwis' miseries. Surya accounted for another brilliant catch (ending with three overall) in the slip cordon as the match was well and truly over in a flash. The first six overs were set to give a clear indication of how the match will proceed but the visitors were 21 for 5 in less than five overs. India and New Zealand locked horns in the three-match T20I series decider on Wednesday (February 01), in Ahmedabad, with the scoreline being 1-1. Opting to bat first, India rode on in-form opener Shubman Gill's 63-ball 126 not out, laced with 12 fours and 7 sixes, to post a mammoth 234 for 4 and dismissed the Kiwis for a paltry 66 in 12.1 overs to win by a humongous 168-run margin at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. He became the seventh Indian batter to score a T20I hundred and became the fifth among his countrymen to log a ton in all forms of the game.

After his Ahmedabad heroics, Kohli -- who will next be seen in action during the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia on home soil -- took to his official Instagram account to laud Gill. On his Instagram story, the 34-year-old shared Gill's picture and wrote, "Sitara (Star). The future is here."

Gill stitched an entertaining 80-run second-wicket stand with Rahul Tripathi, who set the platform for his side courtesy his 22-ball 44. At the post-match presentation, centurion Gill said, "It feels good when you practice and it pays off. I was backing myself to score big. Didn't happen in the Sri Lanka series, but happy to see it work out now. Everybody has a different technique to hit sixes. Hardik bhai told me to play my game, not do anything extra and he kept backing me. When you represent your country, there is no fatigue. 'The future is here': Virat Kohli lauds Shubman Gill after his 3rd T20I heroics vs New Zealand

India are gearing up for the third and final T20I versus New Zealand, to be held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 01). Ahead of the series finale, with the scoreline being 1-1, former Indian spinner and captain Anil Kumble lavished praise on some young Indian players and mentioned two future superstars.

Having worked closely with pacer Arshdeep Singh, during his sting as Punjab Kings' (PBKS) coach, Kumble lauded the left-arm seamer and reckoned he has a bright future. In his limited international appearances, Arshdeep has taken 39 T20I wickets in 25 matches and was part of Rohit Sharma-led India's Asia Cup and T20 World Cup campaigns.

"Having worked closely with someone like Arshdeep, it’s wonderful to see him grow into what he’s done for India. I would look at Arshdeep as the next superstar bowler coming through," said Kumble on JioCinema.

Among the young batters, India have abundance of talents in the form of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi and the likes. Kumble, however, picked ODI double centurion Ishan as a superstar in the making. "From a batting perspective, Ishan Kishan is someone who’s been wonderful in the opportunities he’s got. He got a double hundred and he’s someone who I think will be a superstar," Kumble asserted.

Meanwhile, former Indian stumper Parthiv Patel mentioned two different names. "He's (Umran) quick and bowling well and already played for India. He’s someone who can be a superstar. Batting-wise, having seen Tilak Varma in the last couple of years, I had the opportunity to scout him and see the cricketer he has become. We’ve seen his batting ability, and he has the ability to go on and lead the side. He’s someone who comes across as a leader."

At present, Hardik-led Indian T20I team will be eager to win the three-match series versus the Kiwis before the action moves to the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and visitors Australia, starting on February 09.

IND vs NZ: Arshdeep, Gill, Shaw or Ishan? Anil Kumble names two future superstars of Team India

Shubman Gill has emerged as one of India’s brightest cricketer stars in recent times. His performance in the longer format lately has brought him laurels while his record-breaking ODI series against New Zealand helped him enter record books. But nothing of that can be said about his outings in the T20 format. Technique-wise Gill already looks ahead of his contemporaries but it’s his manner of dismissals that could cause some trouble for him, as per the former India opener Aakash Chopra. Much like how he got out to a spinner in the first T20I, Gill got dismissed in the same fashion in Sunday’s second T20I in Lucknow.

India levelled the T20I series in Lucknow with a seven-wicket win on a surface that was very tricky to play. Even India’s stand-in captain Hardik Pandya called it as a shocker. Having said that, India was to chase a mere 100 in 20 overs – which they just somehow managed to do so. Gill, who scored 11 off nine balls got out to off-spinner Michael Bracewell. In the first game, he tried pulling a short ball from Santner that found a top edge, and now in this match, he made the same mistake.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash opined that though you can’t be too critical with such players, one still has to be careful about the numbers getting stacked up nicely.

"Gill was dismissed off Santner's bowling in the first match and here, Michael Bracewell. He is trying to play the pull shot but getting the leading edge, it happened both times. Happens on a turning surface," Aakash Chopra said.

"You can't be too critical but numbers are not stacking up nicely for him, that's a problem. Ishan Kishan was looking decent and he got run out. Rahul Tripathi also swung his bat but how many runs will you score here? Suryakumar Yadav, who is in amazing form, was also seen struggling," he added.

Now since the three-match T20I series is tied at 1-1, the decider will be played on Wednesday in Ahmedabad.

Numbers in T20Is are not stacking up nicely for Shubman Gill, could become a problem, says Aakash Chopra

Cricket has changed a lot since the invention of T20 format. Not only in the manner of how it is played and approached, in the way of how it will be led heading forward as well. While a little more than a decade back a single captain leading a team across formats was considered normal but now with the surge in the franchise-based T20 cricket and with everyone trying to try their hand at everything available, this doesn’t look like a reality. Expressing his opinion on the same, former India opener Aakash Chopra said the days of a single captain leading in all formats are now over.

Adding that teams will adapt this policy of split captaincy heading forward, Chopra said India, for the meantime will have Rohit Sharma as their ODI and Test skipper at least until the 2023 home World Cup.

As Hardik got appointed as the new T20I captain and is likely to stick around in this role till the next T20 World Cup; Aakash feels Rohit could also pave way for someone younger in the longer formats - probably like Rishabh Pant or even Shubman Gill, both of whom he believes have the potential to lead the Indian team in future.

“I don’t think we will see a single captain for all formats just yet, I think those days are over. Rohit Sharma will be the Test team’s captain till the WTC, that’s not going to change - it is going to stay like that. Hardik Pandya is currently the captain in the T20 format, and I think he will continue to do so and in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, you will see Pandya be the captain of the Indian team," Aakash Chopra said on JioCInema’s new daily sports show, Aakashvani.

“In One-Day cricket, Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain till the World Cup. But I think in the long term, in terms of India’s captaincy, it will be Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. These are my two candidates for India’s captaincy in the future," Chopra added.

While Rishabh Pant is currently out of the setup, getting treated for a road accident he suffered in December last year; Shubman Gill is enjoying his time out there – pilling up huge runs. Even in the recently-concluded New Zealand ODIs, the young right-handed batter scored his maiden double ton in the first game. He followed up with yet another century in the third ODI in Indore, and ended the three-match series with 360 runs to his name.

Ahead of the start of the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, newly-appointed India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya said the returning Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his chance as the man-in-form Shubman Gill will be preferred over him for the Ranchi game, scheduled to begin on Friday, January 27th. Gill became the youngest batter to register a double hundred against the Kiwis in the first ODI in Hyderabad, hitting 208, while in the final One-Dayer in Indore, he scored yet another century – ending the three-match series with 360 runs at an average of 180.

"Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his opportunity as Shubman Gill has done very well and was already part of the T20 team," Hardik Pandya said in the presser in Ranchi.

Gill, who got preferred over Ishan Kishan before the start of this series at a time when Kishan had notched up the fastest double hundred in ODIs against Bangladesh in his last game, will again be played ahead of Shaw. Prithvi, who kept pressing his case for a place in the team owing to remarkable performances in the domestic cricket, finally got picked for New Zealand T20Is. He, however, falls second in the pecking order when it’s compared to Gill in white-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, both Shaw and Gill were part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad that won the title in 2018 against Australia in the finals. Though Shaw got his chance first as he scored a debut Test hundred against the Windies, Gill took some time before getting roped into the Indian team. His main contribution, however, came during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar series in Australia where he scored 259 runs in three Tests opening against the best pace attack in the world.

It was on that tour only when Shaw failed to deliver across two Tests and was later dropped. The team persisted with Gill across formats after that and it paid dividends as Gill kept scoring runs at consistent rate against top teams in different conditions. Going by how he is playing at the moment, it would be hard to look beyond Gill in the opening slot.

Here’s India’s squad for New Zealand T20Is –

Hardik Pandya (captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Tripathi, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar, Shivam Mavi, Ishan Kishan, Jitesh Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar

Here’s India’s squad for New Zealand T20Is – Hardik Pandya (captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Tripathi, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar, Shivam Mavi, Ishan Kishan, Jitesh Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar

IND vs NZ 2023: Prithvi Shaw has to wait as Shubman Gill will start, says Hardik Pandya ahead of 1st T20I

Rohit Sharma scored his first ODI hundred in three years while Shubman Gill continued his domination with another sublime ton as India completed a clean sweep with a 90-run win over New Zealand in the third match here on Tuesday.

Batters from both sides lit up the dead rubber as 680 runs were scored at the Holkar Stadium.

Rohit (101 off 85 balls) got to the three-figure mark for the first time since January 2020 while Gill (112 off 78) scored his fourth ODI hundred to take India to 385 for nine.

Following twin failures, the New Zealand top-order put up a much better show. Devon Conway (138) stitched crucial partnerships but Shardul Thakur (3/45) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/62) regularly struck to bowl out the Balck Caps for 295 in 41.2 overs.

It was India's second consecutive clean sweep, having beaten Sri Lanka last week. After Hardik Pandya (1/37) got rid of Finn Allen (0), Conway shared 106 runs with Henry Nicholls and 78 runs with Daryl Mitchell (24).

In the absence of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, the Indian bowlers struggled initially, leaking runs as Conway tonked the ball all around the park.
Shardul, however, managed to turn the game, as he took back-to-back wickets of Mitchell and Tom Latham (0) in the 26th over.

In his next over, Thakur sent Glenn Phillips (5) packing with a cross-seamed delivery.
Umran Malik (1/52) then got Conway as the centurion pulled awkwardly with Rohit doing the rest at midwicket as the match seemed to slip out of New Zealand's grasp.

The spin duo of Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/43) then cleaned up the tail.

Earlier, Rohit and Gill put up a belligerent 212-run opening stand, sharing 22 fours and 11 sixes between them.

Rahul Dravid joked on the eve of the match that bowlers don't want to bowl as soon as they land in Indore because of the batter-friendly conditions. The batting great had a point, and the New Zealanders rolling over their arms during the first 25 overs would have shared Dravid's sentiment.

At one point every ball that Rohit and Gill's bat touched was either flying to the boundary or over it.

Gill hit four fours and a six to plunder 22 runs off Lockie Ferguson in the eighth over, symbolising the kind of form the 23-year-old has been in lately.

The youngster didn't have to even time the ball for it to run to the boundary. After three fours, he launched the short ball for an upper-cut six.

With the outfield quick and the wicket flat, the rather inexperienced New Zealand bowling unit had no answers to the Indian openers' carnage.

The 26th over saw both Rohit and Gill getting their centuries. Rohit pulled away to deep square to get to his mark and, three balls later, Gill got to the triple-figure mark, his third in four innings.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham used as many as six bowlers and it was his sixth option -- spinner Michael Bracewell -- who provided the tourists their first breakthrough.

Trying to slog one out of the park, Rohit missed the ball as it kept low and turned to eventually hit the stumps. His wicket was met with a roar by the partisan crowd, welcoming Virat Kohli (36).

A miscued shot in the next over spelt the end of Gill's innings as New Zealand struck twice in quick succession.

Ishan Kishan (17) didn't look too comfortable and took nine balls to open his account. A yes-no with Kohli, who had sprinted halfway, marked the end of the wicketkeeper batter's stay in the middle.

New Zealand were able to bring down the boundaries and sixes and, looking to play a big shot, Kohli couldn't beat Finn Allen at mid-off.

Firmly on course for a 400-plus score, India endured a familiar middle-order batting collapse, before Hardik Pandya (54 off 38 balls) provided the final flourish.

Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya was dismissed in a rather controversial manner during the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

The incident transpired in the 40th over of the innings when Pandya was facing medium-pacer Daryl Mitchell. With wicketkeeper Tom Latham up on the stumps, Hardik seemingly got beaten on the fourth delivery of the over.

The ball passed perilously close to the top of off and landed in Latham's gloves. The zing bails, however, lit up a nanosecond later, thereby suggesting that the ball had dislodged the bails.

The on-field umpires went upstairs to third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan for confirmation. The umpire, after multiple viewings gave Pandya out on the big screen, much to the dismay of the viewers and the batter himself.

The replays showed that the ball had passed the stumps without making any contact. However, Latham's gloves had brushed the bails and after he lifted them to collect the ball, they were dislodged.

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri who was in the commentary box at the time said Mitchell and New Zealand should be 'happy' that it was given out.

“Should really be happy, because that, if you take a look again as to where the keeper’s gloves are, where the ball is as it passes the stumps, it looked as if the ball was at least an inch, inch-and-a-half above the stumps," said Shastri.

"You can see as it goes past into the gloves, there’s no red light, it’s only after that. There you go. From that angle you can see that the gloves are closer to the bails than the ball.”

Meanwhile, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer also pointed out the absurdity of the decision.

WATCH | UNBELIEVABLE 200! Shubman Gill becomes the youngest player to smash an ODI double hundred

Ahead of the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening (January 10), captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that Shubman Gill will continue to be persisted as his opening partner, with no room for Ishan Kishan. Kishan had replaced an injured Rohit in the third and inconsequential ODI versus Bangladesh, in early December, and made the most of his opportunity to score a double ton. Many believed that Kishan had done enough to cement his spot as an opener, with Shikhar Dhawan dropped, but the Indian team management want to persist with Shubman.

Speaking on his opening partner, Rohit said in the pre-match presser on Monday (January 09), "Both openers (Gill and Kishan) have done really well. But looking at how both have gone through, I think it is fair that we give Gill a chance to have a fair run because in the last games Gill got a lot of runs as well. I am not going to take anything from Ishan. He has been wonderful for us. He got a double hundred and I know what it takes to get a double hundred, it is a great achievement. But just to be honest and be fair to the guys who have done really well before that we need to give those guys enough chances as well."

Rohit added on Kishan, "It is unfortunate that we won't be able to play Ishan but looking at how things have panned out for us in the last 8-9 months, looking at how the ODIs have gone through for us, it is fair to give Gill that run and he has done extremely well in that position. We will definitely try out and keep Ishan in the mix and see how things pan out for us as we play lot of games ahead." In Gill's defence, he has been among runs in the West Indies, Zimbabwe and New Zealand tour but wasn't part of the Indian squad for the Bangladesh series, with the return of the key players. Hence, when Kishan was in the squad and scored a double ton when he got a chance in the playing XI, many believed he would pip Gill to open versus SL.

Thus, former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad reacted to Kishan's omission. He tweeted, replying to a cricket portal's post, and wrote, "Think fair would have been to give chance to a man who scored a double hundred in India’s last ODI, and in a series where India lost two games and the series. Have all the time in the world for Gill, but no way you drop a player for scoring a double ton."

In the ongoing first ODI between India and SL, Rohit & Co. lost the toss and were opted to bat first. Rohit and Gill stitched an impressive 143-run first-wicket stand with the youngster returning with a sublime 60-ball 73, studded with 11 fours. For him to cement his place as the second opener, Gill has been consistent but will hope to score some daddy hundreds.

For Kishan, he will surely feel unlucky to have missed out despite scoring the fourth double ton by an Indian in ODIs. However, India have a lot of white-ball cricket to play en route the IPL 2023 edition. Hence, he will aim to once again make the most of his opportunities.

I am not going to take anything from Ishan. He has been wonderful for us. He got a double hundred and I know what it takes to get a double hundred, it is a great achievement. But just to be honest and be fair to the guys who have done really well before that we need to give those guys enough chances as well." Rohit added on Kishan, "It is unfortunate that we won't be able to play Ishan but looking at how things have panned out for us in the last 8-9 months, looking at how the ODIs have gone through for us, it is fair to give Gill that run and he has done extremely well in that position. Have all the time in the world for Gill, but no way you drop a player for scoring a double ton." Rohit and Gill stitched an impressive 143-run first-wicket stand with the youngster returning with a sublime 60-ball 73, studded with 11 fours.

'No way you...': Former Indian speedster blasts Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma for dropping Ishan Kishan

Returning India captain Rohit Sharma confirmed his opening partner ahead of the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati. Explaining this decision, Rohit said Gill has been a proven opener in this format having done well in the past one year; and that the management wants to give him a fair chance going forward.

IND vs SL 2023: Ishan Kishan or Shubman Gill? Rohit Sharma confirms his opening partner for 1st ODI

Ishan Kishan ended 2022 with a bang by becoming only the fourth Indian -- seventh overall -- to slam an ODI double ton during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in December. Playing the third and inconsequential tie due to regular captain Rohit Sharma's thumb injury, the 24-year-old made the most of the opportunity and slammed a majestic 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes. Thus, Ishan made a big statement with India stepping into 2023, i.e. an ODI World Cup year with Men in Blue set to host the mega event.

Ahead of India's first international assignment in 2023, the BCCI selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced the national side's white-ball squads for their home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While there was no mention of first-choice Rishabh Pant -- a first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- Kishan found his name in both the squads. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, India still has quite a few batters who can accompany Rohit at the top. But, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir is crystal clear that Kishan deserves to partner Rohit in ODIs..

As quoted by Cricinfo, Gambhir said that the discussion about who should be Sharma's partner at the top should be over following Kishan's blitz. "I'm amazed we're discussing this, because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings," Gambhir pointed out when asked to name his choice on who should open with Rohit. "The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack - especially at [their] home - should play."

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted.

Further, Gambhir mentioned his ideal India XI at this moment. "It's very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he's been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years. Yes, he's had issues against the short ball, but he's been able to manage it. You can't be the best against everything but if you're able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can't look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6."

India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10.

India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

The discussion is over: Gambhir feels 'it has to be Ishan Kishan' who should open with Rohit in ODIs

Stand-in captain KL Rahul had a good run leading the Indian team in the just-concluded Bangladesh Test, which the tourists won 2-0. He, however, fell flat as a batter while opening the innings with Shubman Gill. Rahul only managed scores of 22, 23, 10 and 2 in the four outings whereas Gill scored his maiden hundred in the format during the series opener in Chattogram.

After the Bangladesh Tests, India have a stern task ahead as they gear up to host Australia in the upcoming edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, starting on February 09. Ahead of the marquee series, on home soil, veteran Indian keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has issued a warning to Rahul to up his game or he will be left out with Gill's rising stocks.

“I would give KL those couple of Test matches, but if things don’t go KL Rahul’s way; the one thing that does go against him is the fact that he has played over 40 Tests and his average is just mid-30s. That is not acceptable for an opener. That is one of the lowest among Indian players for sure, who have played 35 Test matches," Karthik said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

There have been reports of Rahul being dropped from India's T20I line-up as well. The Men in Blue will host Sri Lanka, followed by New Zealand, in a white-ball series before the BG Trophy versus Pat Cummins' Australia.

India captain Rohit Sharma is currently injured and out of the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh. Rohit suffered a finger injury during the 2nd ODI in Dhaka and upon consulting the private doctor in Mumbai he was advised rest. The recent reports, however, have claimed that Rohit could get fit in time for the 2nd Test, starting December 22nd and will also be available for selection. If that happens, who should be sitting out, the current stand-in skipper KL Rahul or the century-scorer in the ongoing Test Shubman Gill? India commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has an answer.

Speaking to Sony Sports Network, Sanjay said if Rohit is fit and selected for the second Test, KL being the preferred opener could well retain his place while Shubman Gill who just scored his maiden Test ton could be benched.

"This guy (Gill) has got a hundred, he has looked good. Let’s imagine if Rohit Sharma is fit, KL Rahul and Rohit are your first-choice openers; you have to go back to Rohit Sharma. He is your captain. KL Rahul is not getting as many runs as he would like but they are not going to leave KL Rahul out," Sanjay said.

Even in the past we have seen players getting benched or worse dropped after producing excellent performances in their previous innings. The best example is that of Karun Nair, who despite scoring his maiden triple hundred against England in Chennai, 2016 was benched for incoming Ajinkya Rahane for the following Test in Mumbai.

Giving an example of the same, the former India player said, "Shubman Gill may have to sit out. Ajinkya Rahane, it happened with him once, I think. It has happened before Indian cricket."

Meanwhile, there is no confirmation as to whether will Rohit Sharma return for the second Test or not.

BAN vs IND 2022: If Rohit Sharma returns, Shubman Gill might have to sit out, opines Sanjay Manjrekar

Former opener Wasim Jaffer feels current young batter Shubman Gill could be the next big thing in Indian cricket after Virat Kohli. Gill who scored his maiden Test hundred in the second innings of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh garnered attention from all over for his superb show. The right-handed batter played some classic shots en-route to his first century in this format, and Jaffer, who has been following Gill's career closely said with this hundred the monkey is off his back finally.

Jaffer said there is no doubt that Shubman is a class player, having showed already what he is capable in the past few series; Wasim added he is happy for the youngster and is sure that Gill will be the next big thing after legendary Virat Kohli in Indian cricket.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Wasim said, "It is good that it came. He has missed out on a couple of opportunities before, but I am happy this monkey is off his back. He is a class player, I will probably go ahead and say that after Virat Kohli, he is the next big batter to come out of the Indian camp.”

Jaffer also feels Gill is an all-format player, and that given his style of play, Gill could be adjusted into the middle-order as well.

“He is a three-format player and I am hoping to see a lot more good things from Shubman Gill,” Jaffer added. “He has played in the middle order for his state team and he will get used to it. Openers getting slotted in the middle order is not a big deal because you are used to playing spin. It is the other way around which can trouble because when a middle order player is used as an opener, he is not used to playing the hard new ball on a fresh pitch. If Gill is slotted to bat in No.5 or any other position, I think he will be well suited to play there. As an opener, when you play bigger innings you play the old ball and the spinners on a wearing pitch. So I am pretty sure he will get used to it easily.”

Meanwhile, despite scoring a superb hundred in the second innings, Gill could well be benched for the second Test if Rohit Sharma is deemed fit and available for selection. As per India commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar, there is higher of KL Rahul retaining his place in the XI while Gill could pave way for Rohit.

ALSO READ: Amused Tweeples react to USA's 'Indian-origin' Under-19 World Cup women's squad Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Wasim said, "It is good that it came. He has missed out on a couple of opportunities before, but I am happy this monkey is off his back. He is a class player, I will probably go ahead and say that after Virat Kohli, he is the next big batter to come out of the Indian camp.” Jaffer also feels Gill is an all-format player, and that given his style of play, Gill could be adjusted into the middle-order as well. So I am pretty sure he will get used to it easily.” Meanwhile, despite scoring a superb hundred in the second innings, Gill could well be benched for the second Test if Rohit Sharma is deemed fit and available for selection. 'He will be the next big batter from India after Virat Kohli' - Wasim Jaffer heaps praises on youngster

While India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opening batsman Shubman Gill could be promoted in the BCCI’s annual central contract list, veteran seamer Ishant Sharma and batter Ajinkya Rahane could lose their spots. Alongside them, keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha could also be part of that list. As the board’s apex council meeting is set to take place on December 21st, star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav could also see him getting promoted.

Among the 12 items on the agenda that will be discussed in the meeting via a video conference, ‘Retainership contract’ of senior men and women cricketers is one huge point. It is understood that out-of-favour Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma could face axe in the new list while Saha, who had already been told by the management that he won’t feature for India again, might suffer the same fate as well.

As the contract is divided in four different categories – A+ (7 crores), A (5 crores), B (3 crores) and C (1 crores), we could see some shuffling happening. As per an unnamed senior BCCI official, Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently listed in Group C, will be promoted given his splendid run-of-form in the shortest format this year; while newly-appointed T20I captain Hardik Pandya could also return to Group B from C. Shubman Gill, who is now a regular starter in both Tests and ODIs is likely to get promotion from Group C to Group B.

Ishan Kishan, who has had a fair amount of run in white-ball cricket this year, could well enter the list. The dynamite opener recently smashed a double-hundred against Bangladesh in the ODI series.

"Surya was in Group C but his performance in the last one year warrants a promotion to Group B at least, if not A. He is currently world No. 1 in T20I ICC rankings and is a serious contender in ODI team also," a senior official, who is privy to the developments, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

It was a walk in the park for the Indian team as the hosts demolished South Africa by seven wickets in the third and final ODI to bag the three-match series 2-1. Indian bowlers ran riot to bundle out the Proteas for a paltry 99 inside just 28 overs before the hosts chased down the target without breaking a sweat.

Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and invited South Africa to bat in the seres-decider, a decision that worked wonders for the Men in Blue. Sundar drew the first blood for India by removing Quinton de Kock cheaply on just 6 off 10 balls before Siraj got the wickets of South Africa opener Janneman Malan (15) and Reeza Hendricks (3).

After Siraj's twin blow, young all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed piled more misery on South Africa as he continued his fine form with the ball after shining on debut, Ahmed picked up the prized wickets of Aiden Markram (9) and Heinrich Klaasen (34).

Sundar returned to pick up the wicket of South Africa's stand-in skipper David Miller to finish with excellent figures of 2/15 in his four overs before Kuldeep Yadav ran through the tail to pick up a four-wicket haul and bundle out the Proteas for just 99 runs.

The run chase turned out to be a cakewalk for India after the brilliant effort from the bowlers as Shubman Gill missed out on a well-deserved half-century by just one run. Opening the batting with skipper Dhawan, Gill scored 49 off 57 balls to set up a thumping win for the hosts.

He was well supported by Shreyas Iyer, who scored an unbeaten 28 off 23 balls and continued his purple patch. It was an off day for left-hander Ishan Kishan, who could only manage 10 off 18 balls before edging one to De Kock off Bjorn Fortuin's bowling.

BCCI selection committee announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November, early this month. The main squad features some big names whereas they mentioned Md Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer in the reserves.

Sanju Samson's omission left many of his fans disappointed whereas some former cricketers backed the decision although some felt it was harsh on him. Recently, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly mentioned that Samson, who captains the Rajasthan Royals (RR), 'just missed' being a part of the squad.

"Sanju is playing well. He played for India but just missed the World Cup. He is in the Indian team's plans. He is now a part of the ODI team against SA. Also he has done well in the IPL franchise and he is the Captain also," said the former Indian captain ahead of India's T20I series versus South Africa at home.

Samson recently led India A in a three-match ODI series versus New Zealand at home. India A whitewashed the Black Caps whereas Samson also returned with scores of 29*, 37 and 54. He will look to remain consistent going ahead to break into the main squad and cement his place for a long period.

Meanwhile, India were dealt with a major blow on Thursday (September 29) as Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the T20 WC due to stress back fracture. With all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja already ruled out, Rohit Sharma-led India will need the bowling unit to stand tall incase Bumrah is officially sidelined. As per reports, Shami or Chahar might get a look-in the main squad with no Bumrah. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj might replace Bumrah in India's squad for the ongoing T20Is against SA.

Here's India's final 15-man squad for T20 World Cup 2022:

Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh

Standby players - Mohammed Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar

Bumrah's absence will surely lead to some changes in the main squad and the standby list.

"It's been a journey to remember. We wish you all the best for your next endeavour, @ShubmanGill," Gujarat Titans wrote in a tweet on Saturday. Gill was quick to respond with a heart and a hug emoji, sparking rumours of his departure. However, there has been no official word from both parties yet.

Why is Sara Ali Khan trending on social media?

For long, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up, especially in the white-ball formats. The trio's consistency has been second to none and have been vital to India's success. Recently, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was in awe of Shubman Gill -- who has been the Player-of-the-Series in India's last two ODI series -- after his recent heroics in the just-concluded Zimbabwe series and even compared him with Rohit, KL and Kohli.

Speaking to the Times of India after the conclusion of the India-Zimbabwe ODIs, in the African nation, Harbhajan was impressed with Gill's technique and shot selection and stated that as a batsman he is definitely up with the Virat and Rohit -- two of India's finest batters in the modern era. In addition, he picked him as a potential captain.

“He’s a sorted batsman, who has a sound technique and very good shot selection. Gill missed out on his maiden international century when he was stranded on 98 not out during the third and final ODI versus hosts West Indies during the Men in Blue's tour of the Caribbean Island in July-August. He ended with the Player-of-the-Series versus the Windies and returned with the same prize once again during the KL Rahul-led Indian team's three-match ODI series versus hosts Zimbabwe, which ended on Monday (August 22). However, this time around, Gill also managed to score his maiden international ton during the third ODI, where he returned with a stunning 97-ball 130.

In terms of batsmanship, I would bracket him with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the current Indian team. You love to watch them bat." He added, "For me, he’s a future India captain. He’s got the game, and he’ll learn about the captaincy. So, why not?." Would bracket him with Rohit, Kohli & Rahul in Team India: Harbhajan lauds Shubman Gill after Zimbabwe ODIs

KL Rahul-led India outplayed Zimbabwe in all three departments of the game to register a 13-run victory at the Harare Sports Club here and clinched the three-match ODI series by 3-0 on Monday. Sikandar Raza`s crucial knock of 115 runs went in vain as Zimbabwe failed to stop India from completing a 3-0 sweep. Chasing a target of 290, Zimbabwe got off to a decent start as their openers Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Innocent Kaia tried to play big shots. But the duo could not stand in front of the brilliant bowling of Deepak Chahar dismissed Kaia on 6 runs. Takudzwanashe Kaitano was in red-hot form, smashing Indian bowlers for big shots but his innings were cut short as he walked off the ground due to injury. Tony Munyonga came in his place. Sean Williams and Munyonga developed a much-needed partnership for their team as they took their team`s total beyond the 50-run mark, Munyonga smashing two fours in the spell of Deepak Hooda.

The blistering partnership could not stand long as Williams fell prey to Axar Patel`s spell after scoring 45 runs. Sikandar Raza then came to the crease. Raza started his stint on the pitch on an aggressive note as he smashed Indian bowlers all around the ground. Ryan Burl then was sent back to the hut by Kuldeep Yadav after scoring 8 runs. Luke Jongwe joined Raza as he tried to anchor a partnership to keep the momentum going in his team`s favour. Jongwe teh fell prey to Kuldeep Yadav`s spell after scoring 14 runs in 13 deliveries. While hammering Men in Blue Raza brought up his half-century in 61 deliveries. Raza in red-hot form smashed Shardul Thakur in the 39th over to gather 20 runs in six deliveries. Brad Evans and Raza notched up the partnership of fifty runs while taking their team a step closer to the win. After the 44 over the equation went down to 64 runs needed in 42 balls. Raza then went ahead to slam a century against India in 88 delivery. Zimbabwe suffered a big blow Shardul Thakur dismissed Raza after scoring 115 runs in 95 balls. In the last over Avesh Khan departed Victor Nyauchi to help India capture the three-match ODI series by 3-0 with 13 run victory over the host. Earlier, a superb maiden hundred by batter Shubman Gill and a half-century by Ishan Kishan powered India to 289/8 at the end of their 50 overs. The day was extremely memorable for the Indian batters as they smashed Zimbabwe all over the park, Gill (130) and Kishan (50) in particular. Brad Evans (5/54) got his maiden five-wicket haul and all the big stars under his kitty, but there were not much positives for Zimbabwe other than that they could restrict India to a below-300 total.

Electing to bat first, India was off to a solid start. Openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan rotated the strike really well, going big only occasionally. Dhawan was more aggressive of two as he got some neat hit crossing the fence for a four. Rahul focused mainly on strike rotation and giving himself some game time. At the end of 10 overs, India was at 41/0 with Dhawan (25*) and Rahul (12*) at the crease. Zimbabwe had a slight edge over India in the next ten overs as India`s run-making was not really fast. The duo crossed the fifty-run stand in 74 balls. The 63-run stand between the duo was broken after Brad Evans`s delivery edged Rahul`s bat and went shattering his stumps. KL`s stay ended in 45-ball 30 runs, with only one four and six, not exactly a stay he was hoping for.

Shubman Gill was the next batter on the crease. At the end of 20 overs, India was at 77/1 with Dhawan (39*) and Gill (4*) at the crease. Though Gill and Dhawan kept the scoreboard ticking for a while, their stand lasted only 21 runs. Evans got his second wicket in the match as a leading edge off Dhawan`s bat was caught by Sean Williams at the cover region. Dhawan was back in the hut after a 68-ball 40. Ishan Kishan was next up on the crease. An amazing drive by Kishan on the first ball of the 25th overtook India past the 100-run mark. Gill and Kishan continued to pile up runs, bringing up their 50-run stand and reached the 150-run mark in 35 overs. Gill was looking in fine touch and brought up his half-century in 51 balls, his fourth in ODIs. The duo also brought up their hundred-run stand in 99 balls. The duo`s assault did not end even after that as they kept scoring runs.

Kishan brought up his second half-century in ODIs off 61 balls. Ishan Kishan was run out in the 43rd over for 50 off 61 balls. The new batter Deepak Hooda was also dismissed for one of three balls by Evans, who struck for the third time in the innings. Gill brought up his maiden hundred in 82 balls. Sanju Samson was the next up on crease. He could score only 15 runs off 13 balls before Luke Jongwe cleared him. At this point, half of the side was back in the hut for 256 runs.Gill kept going and his next partner was Axar Patel, who could not last long either as he was dismissed by Victor Nyauchi for just 1.Gill departed for a well-made 130 off 97 balls and it was Evans who got his wicket after he was caught by Innocent Kaia at long-off.

Evans got his fifth wicket of the day after Shardul Thakur was caught by Nyuachi for 9 at mid-off. At the end of 50 overs, India finished at 289/8 with Deepak Chahar (1*) and Kuldeep Yadav (2*). Brad Evans was the best bowler for the hosts for the day, taking 5/54. Jongwe and Nyauchi got one wicket each.

Sikandar Raza's heroics in vain as Shubman Gill's ton takes India to ODI series whitewash vs Zimbabwe

India and Zimbabwe are involved in the third and inconsequential ODI at the Harare Sports Club, Harare on Monday (August 22). After KL Rahul-led Men in Blue opted to bat first and rode on Shubman Gill's maiden international ton, 130 off 97 balls, Indian pacer Deepak Chahar made heads turn as soon as Zimbabwe's 290-run chase commenced.

As soon as the run-chase kicked off, Chahar had the opportunity to mankad opener Innocent Kaia on the first ball of the second innings. Seeing Kaia way outside the crease, Chahar wiped off the bails at the non-striker's end but refused to appeal. With the Indian speedster not appealing, the Zimbabwean batter was given a reprieve. However, he couldn't make the most of the lifeline provided as Chahar got the better of him in his second over itself and the right-hander made the long walk back to the pavillion for 6. The decision had not gone in favour of Innocent before stand-in captain Rahul went upstairs for a successful review.

3rd ODI: Deepak Chahar gives lifeline to Innocent Kaia with no mankad appeal, later dismisses him for cheap

Team India batter Shubman Gill finally brought an end to his century drought in international cricket as he slammed his maiden international century for India in their ongoing 3rd ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare. Gill, who made his debut for India in 2019, had come close to scoring his maiden ton on a few occasions but ended up missing the triple-figure mark by a whisker.

Gill came out to bat at number three for India after the departure of skipper KL Rahul. He took little time in settling down and went on to notch up his first ODI hundred off just 82 balls. Gill finished with 130 off 97 balls laced with 15 fours and a six. The stylish right-hander looked in sublime control and played some brilliant strokes around the ground.

Despite India losing wickets regularly on one end, Gill looked in flawless touch as he took the Zimbabwe bowlers to the cleaners. He combined with Ishan Kishan (50) to share a solid stand of 140 runs for the third wicket to help India post a total of 289 runs on the board in 50 overs.

Shubman Gill breaks Sachin Tendulkar's record after brilliant 130-run knock against Zimbabwe

Shubman Gill was on a roll with the bat in the recently-concluded India-West Indies ODI series, in the Caribbean island. Since his international debut, Gill has been in India's scheme of things in the purest format, however, he had not got a lot of chances in the white-ball formats.

In the absence of regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc., Gill got a chance to open the innings in the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian team for the WI ODIs. The youngster took the golden opportunity with both hands and ended with 205 runs in three outings (at a strike rate of 102.50), including two half-centuries and a career-best ODI score of 98 not out in the final match.

Thus, Gill ended as the Player-of-the-Series for his consistency batting at the top. Seeing this, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris lavished huge praise on the Gujarat Titans' (GT) opener.

"I still think there are holes in his game. I think there are holes in his technique that the opposition will look to exploit, but he's got all the skills and the other component. What makes a World class player is their mental thought process and their maturity and leadership. And I think he has that as well. And for that reason, yes you're quite right you can keep him up there with the Rohits, KL Rahuls and Shikhars in terms of openers,” Styris said Sports18’s show ‘Sports Over The Top’.

Former India stumper and selector Saba Karim also opined on Gill and stated that the 22-year-old can lead an IPL franchise sooner than later if he continues to grow in the coming years. "I think it's good to get some kind of experience. And I feel one year, two year around the line we may see Shubman elevated to lead one of these on the India T20 league. And I think once he gets that kind of experience, in addition, he can manage to lead Punjab in the domestic level that will really board well for him. So, he will gain experience and as you rightly said, he has shown some leadership skills. So that will really do well for Shubman Gill in future,” Karim stated.

“I look at him as a versatile player because at this stage, one has seen him bat so well for India as an opener. But given the opportunity, I'm sure he can do well at number three, number four and I think mostly in the T20 format, you look at players who can bat number one, number two and number three. So, I think in that kind of a mould, Shubman Gill can fit in quite easily,” he added.

And for that reason, yes you're quite right you can keep him up there with the Rohits, KL Rahuls and Shikhars in terms of openers,” Styris said Sports18’s show ‘Sports Over The Top’. ALSO READ | Not Pandya, Pant or Rahul! Former NZ all-rounder backs India's star player as future captaincy candidate Former India stumper and selector Saba Karim also opined on Gill and stated that the 22-year-old can lead an IPL franchise sooner than later if he continues to grow in the coming years.

‘Right up there with Rohit, Rahul, Dhawan’: Former NZ all-rounder all praise for India's star batter

Top bowling spells from spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and pacers Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur helped India crush West Indies by 119 runs in the rain-hit third and final ODI of the series here at Queen`s Park Oval on Thursday. India has completed a clean sweep of 3-0 over the hosts. India can walk away with a lot of positives after this match as their batting was great, lead from the front by openers Shikhar Dhawan (58) and Shubman Gill (98*).

Setting a target of 257 in 35 overs after the match was hit by rain, Windies batters never looked as if they were in the game as Indian bowlers feasted on them. The hosts fell prey to a world-class bowling attack with their careless shot selection. Chahal (4/17), Siraj (2/14) and Thakur (2/17) were extremely economic with the ball and delivered timely blows to their opponent.

Chasing 257, West Indies got off a nightmarish start, losing opener Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks in the second over to pacer Mohammed Siraj. Following this, opener Shai Hope and Brandon King resumed the chase for the hosts. They both maintained solid running between the wickets. King was the aggressor during the partnership. Hope-King added 47 runs to their stand before the former was stumped by wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson for 22 off 33 balls on a delivery by spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. At the end of 10 overs, West Indies was 48/3, with King (24*) and Pooran (1*). Captain Nicholas Pooran was next up on crease. The 12th over was bowled by pacer Prasidh Krishna and it turned out to be expensive, with Pooran-King smashing four boundaries in it collectively. It was spinner Axar Patel who gave India their fourth wicket, removing King, who was looking threatening. He had scored 42 off 37 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket by the bowler.

Keacy Carty was next up on the crease. Pooran`s game became more attacking, smashing Deepak Hooda for a four and a six and Axar for a four as well. The duo took the hosts to the 100-run mark at end of 18 overs, with Pooran being the aggressor. Shardul Thakur broke the 29-run stand between the duo, bowling out Carty for just five runs off 17 balls. At this point, half of Windies line up was back in the hut at 103. Jason Holder was the next batter to arrive on the crease. The all-rounder was making his return to white-ball cricket after a while and had a task in hand to build a solid stand with his skipper. Prasidh finally got his first wicket of the day, dismissing the danger man Pooran for 42 off 32 balls after being caught by Dhawan at mid-on. Thakur gave another jolt to the hosts, sending back Akael Hosein for just one run after skipper Dhawan took another great catch.

There was not much batting left with the Windies except for Holder, who needed to pull off something really great to guide his team to a consolation win. Things continued to go downhill for Windies, with Paul dismissed for a duck by Chahal after he was caught by Thakur at point while attempting to reverse sweep. Holder was running out of partners at this point, now joined by Hayden Walsh. Walsh was the ninth wicket down at a score of 137 after being caught by Dhawan at slips. Jayden Seales was the last player dismissed, sent back to pavilion by Chahal. Windies were bundled out for 137. They had lost the match by 119 runs and India had completed a 3-0 clean sweep in the series. Chahal finished as the leading bowler for India with 4/17. Siraj and Thakur also took two wickets. Krishna and Axar got one scalp each.

Earlier, a 113-run stand between Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan powered India to 225/3 in 36 overs during the rain-hit third and final ODI against West Indies here at Queens Park Oval on Wednesday. As per Duckworth-Lewis Method, West Indies were set a target of 257 runs in 35 overs. The innings face disruption due to rain. But despite this disruption, India managed to put up a solid total on the board. Dhawan (58) and Gill (98*) continued their fine batting form and Windies bowlers were not able to do much. Shreyas Iyer also contributed a fine 44.

Electing to bat first, India was cautious for the first ten overs, mostly rotating the strike and hitting big occasionally. This cautious approach bore fruit as openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill were able to get through the mandatory powerplay with a score of 45/0, with the duo standing unbeaten at 22 each. After reaching their 50-run stand in 67 balls, the duo accelerated their run-making. Skipper Dhawan brought up his 37th fifty in ODIs. Dhawan-Gill brought up their 100-run stand in 118 balls.

Gill was also looking really classy with the bat at the other end and brought up his second ODI fifty, continuing his good run in the series. The 113-run stand between the duo was broken in 23rd over. It was spinner Hayden Walsh who gave Windies a breakthrough by dismissing Dhawan for 58 off 74 balls, with skipper Nicholas Pooran taking the catch at mid-wicket. Shreyas Iyer was next up on crease. Rain interrupted play at this point, with India at 115/1 in 24 overs, with Gill (51*) and Iyer (2*). The match resumed as a 40-over-a-side contest. After this, Gill-Iyer started showing more attacking intent with the willow, smashing boundaries and sixes.

The very first over after rain went for 18 runs. The duo raced to their 50-run partnership in just 30 balls. West Indies bowlers were shocked by the sudden change in gears and it was reflected in some sloppy fielding by them.

The duo kept the scoreboard moving and added 86 runs before Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for a solid 44 off 34 balls by spinner Akeal Hosein after being caught by Keemo Paul at long-on. Suryakumar Yadav was the next man on the crease for India. However, his poor run of scores continued as he was dismissed by Walsh after being caught for just eight runs at backward point by Shamarh Brooks.

Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter was next up on the crease. Gill-Samson carried on for a while before rain interrupted play once again. India`s innings came to an end at 225/3 in 36 overs due to rain, with Gill (98*) and Samson (6*) unbeaten.

Brief Scores: India: 225/3 in 36 overs (Shubman Gill 98, Shikhar Dhawan 58, Hayden Walsh 2/57) win against West Indies: 137 in 26 overs (Brandon King 42, Nicholas Pooran 42, Yuzvendra Chahal 4/17) by 119 runs.

3rd ODI: India hammer West Indies by 119 runs to register clean sweep in Trinidad

Shikhar Dhawan-led India whitewashed Nicholas Pooran's West Indies in the three-match ODI series finale, on Wednesday (July 27) at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. In a rain-curtailed game, India were right on the money and walked past the Windies by a mammoth 119-run margin to inflict a clean sweep over the hosts.

Thus, Dhawan & Co. created history as the second-stringed side led India to its maiden ODI series whitewash over West Indies away from home. Talking about the contest, India opted to bat first and rode on Dhawan's 58, Shubman Gill's 98 not out and Shreyas Iyer's 34-ball 44 to post 225-3 in 36 overs. The revised target for West Indies was a challenging one, being asked to chase 257 in 35 overs. In reply, the home side were never in the hunt and got dismissed for a paltry 137 in 26 overs with Yuzvendra Chahal (4 for 17), Shardul Thakur and Md Siraj -- with both pacers returning with two scalps each -- shining with the ball.
