Worse start for UP

Chasing 183, UP got off to the worse possible start as Shweta Sehrawat (1) and Alyssa Healy (11) were dismissed early while in-form Tahlia McGrath (7) also failed to make an impression. The Warriorz were struggling 21/3 after the fifth over and could not recover against a resolute Mumbai side. Kiran Navgire was the lone warrior in the side as she scored 43 runs off 27 deliveries, which consisted of 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Soon after her departure, wickets fell in tandem soon the Warriorz were 94/8 before they scrambled to reach the three-figure mark. Ultimately, the Warriorz innings came to an end at 110 as they lost by 72 runs against a determined Mumbai side.

Mumbai impress with bat

Nat Sciver-Brunt's half-century helped Mumbai Indians post 182/4 against UP Warriorz in the Eliminator of the ongoing WPL contest at the DY Patil Sports Academy on Friday.

Sciver-Brunt slammed an unbeaten 72 off 38 deliveries while Melie Kerr played a knock of 29 runs in 19 balls. For UP Warriorz Sophie Ecclestone bagged two wickets while Parshavi Chopra and Anjali Sarvani called one each. Put to bat first, Mumbai Indians started their innings with a cracking four on the very first ball of the opening over. MI openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews rotated the strike brilliantly, not allowing the UP bowlers to settle down while whacking the loose balls on offer.

Yastika was the aggressor, smashing boundaries regularly. However, Yastika could not stand long at the crease as she was dismissed by Anjali Sarvani after scoring 21 runs off 18 deliveries.

Kerr, however, fell prey to Ecclestone at the score of 29. New batter Pooja Vastrakar and Sciver-Brunt hammered Deepti Sharma for 18 runs, slamming two sixes and one four in the last over, to guide their team's total to 182/4 in 20 overs.

IPL 2023: MI's new batting coach Kieron Pollard ready for new season, says 'words really can't describe...'

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set for a major overhaul after the latest change in rule. The IPL 2023 season all set for kick-off on Friday, March 31 will see a new rule that will see the teams name their Playing XI after the toss has taken place. The move was in contemplation for a long time and will now be part of the men’s setup, having previously been in use at the recently concluded SA20 in South Africa.

Change in rule for latest season

"Currently the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss," a note, seen by ESPNcricinfo, read.

"This has been changed to exchange of teams immediately post the toss, to enable teams to choose the best XI depending on whether they are batting or bowling first. It will also assist the teams to plan for the impact player,” the note further added.

The new rule change is supposed to reduce the impact of toss with teams now having the luxury to name a Playing XI more adaptable to the role. If a certain team is tasked to bowl second, that is later in the day in dew conditions, and then the team line-up could be tweaked accordingly. While the toss will still play an important role in the overall outcome of the match, the new rule could deliver the flexibility needed for the teams after taking the playing conditions into context.

Other changes to the IPL playing conditions

Over-rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for every over not completed in the allocated time.

Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper will result in a dead ball and five penalty runs.

Unfair movement by a fielder will result in a dead ball and five penalty runs.

The latest season will also see a few more rule changes with over-rate penalties and unfair movement of wicketkeepers resulting in five-run penalties and dead-ball. The latter rule applies to the unfair movement of the fielder as well.

The new season of the IPL will see 10 teams in action as they try to clinch glory with Gujarat Titans being the defending champions. They will kick start the season against Chennai Super Kings on Friday, March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad.

DC secure final berth

With a place in the final up for grabs, Delhi needed a win in the final match to get a direct berth and did that with style. Skipper Lanning (39) and Shafali Verma (21) gave Delhi a good start as they chased down the 139-run target. They put together an opening stand of 56 runs and put the Delhi on the brink of a final spot.

However, after they both departed Marizanne Kapp (34) and Alice Capsey (34) took over the initiative and led Delhi home with 13 balls to spare. Shabnim Ismail ended with two wickets and will look to play DC once again if they beat Mumbai in the Eliminator.

Warriorz fail to impress with bat

After being put to bowl first by Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz was off to a solid start. Openers Alyssa Healy and Shweta Sehrawat added 30 runs for the first wicket.
Mumbai keep direct finals hope alive

Coming into the match Mumbai needed to win the contest to make the final of the inaugural edition of the WPL while RCB were already knocked out after a poor start to the campaign. MI’s opening pair of Hayley Matthews (24) and Yastika Bhatia (30) put together a stand of 53 runs for the first wicket and set the tone.

However, MI then lost wickets at regular intervals and paved the way back for RCB into the contest. However, Amelia Kerr’s unbeaten knock of 31 runs and Pooja Vastrakar’s valuable 19 made sure they got near the target and kept their hopes alive for a direct place in the final of the WPL 2023.

For RCB, Kanika Ahuja scalped two wickets while the rest of the bowlers had a day to forget at the office and the entire campaign.

RCB make poor start

After being put to bat first by Mumbai Indians, RCB were dealt a heavy blow after in-form Sophie Devine, who scored a match-winning 99 of 36 balls against Gujarat Giants in their last game, was run out for a duck by Humaira Kazi and Yastika Bhatia. RCB was 1/1 in 0.3 overs. After that, the duo of Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry started to rebuild the innings. Mandhana hit some good shots. Perry played the anchor role, allowing Smriti to play with freedom.

At the end of the six overs of the powerplay, RCB were at 32/1, with Perry (7*) and Mandhana (24*) unbeaten at the crease.

WPL 2023: MI condemn RCB to 6th defeat of season; await DC's result to secure direct final berth

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 in Ahmedabad. Over the years, IPL has become a big success as it allows fans to see Indian players compete with one another and also share as well as rub shoulders with some uncapped and big international cricketers.

The IPL started in 2008 and has become a huge brand nationwide. But before IPL became a revelation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) used to conduct the Challengers Trophy. It was a tournament that began in 1993-94 and was held till the 2013-14 season (not played in 2002-03), every October before the Ranji Trophy with an aim to give young and domestic players a chance to showcase their skills while playing with, and against, the senior Team India players.

During the 2006 edition of the Challengers Trophy, India's famed trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sourav Ganguly -- in the last phase of their respective careers -- were divided among two teams. The then national captains Dravid and Tendulkar were part of the India Blues whereas Ganguly was in Mohammed Kaif-led India Greens.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 with the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) set to take on the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. The league is keenly awaited as many are eager to see how the two most successful teams, such as CSK and Mumbai Indians (MI) bounce back after a miserable IPL 2022.

In IPL 2022, Rohit Sharma-led MI finished at the bottom, tenth spot, for the first time in their rich history. A winner of IPL titles on five occasions, MI will surely be eyeing a dream comeback in IPL 2023 and have bolstered their squad with many star players. Cameron Green, Australia's 23-year-old star all-rounder, was acquired by the MI franchise in IPL 2022 auction for a whopping INR 175 million (INR 17.5 crore) and he is expected to fill in the big shoes of Kieron Pollard, former MI legend.

Issy Wong and Saika Ishaque were the stars of the contest for Mumbai with the ball as they both ended with three wickets each while Yastika Bhatia played a superb 41-run knock for MI.

WPL 2023: Mumbai Indians continue unbeaten run with 3rd consecutive win; Wong, Ishaque star with ball

Mumbai Indians (MI) women have made a terrific start of the 2023 Women's Premier League (WPL) by winning their first two matches. In their first match against Gujarat Giants (GG-W) by 143 runs and against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB-W) by 9 wickets.

In both those matches, MI-W's West Indian all-rounder Hayley Matthews played an important role. After scoring 47 runs against GG, Matthews gave a Player-of-the-Match performance against RCB as she took three wickets and scored 77 runs off 38 balls.

Congratulating Matthews on her performance, England bowler Jorfra Archer, who plays for Mumbai Indians men's side in the Indian Premier League (IPL), posted a video on the social media. Archer, however, got cheeky in the end and teased Hayley about her favorite team in the English Premier League (EPL), Arsenal, to which Hayley posted a epic reply.

Mumbai Indians' Instagram handle posted the video by Archer and tagged Matthews. It was captioned, " @hkmatthews50, Jofra has a special message for you! Arsenal fans, you may want to skip hearing the last line."

Arsenal fans, you may want to skip hearing the last line." All the very best for the rest of the season. And Arsenal are still crap," said Archer in the video. Matthews then wrote befitting reply to Archer in the comment section. "Good thing MI & Arsenal are so similar, both top of the table," she wrote. WPL 2023: Gujarat Giants suffer blow as Deandra Dottin ruled out of season with injury

The stage is set for the curtain-raiser of the Women's Premier League (WPL) as Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants go head-to-head in the curtain-raiser encounter. The contest to be played at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai will start a new era in women's sports in India as five teams will compete for the inaugural edition. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai will look to start on high but are likely to face a stern challenge in the form of Gujarat who are led by Australian star Beth Mooney.

What to expect in WPL 2023?

The first season of WPL already took the spotlight when the auctions were made in February with a host of big names going under the hammer. While the entire edition will be played in Mumbai, the WPL is still expected to attract a host of cricketing fans from across the globe. Smriti Mandhana, the most expensive player in the WPL auctions will take charge of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while Meg Lanning will be part of Delhi Capitals. Alyssa Healy will take charge of the UP Warriorz in a bid to win the tournament in the first time of asking. All the captains have gathered tons of experience at the international level while also gracing the women's game in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) and The Hundred.

Interestingly, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza is also going to join the party having been announced as the mentor for the RCB franchise.

Top Indians to watch out for this season

Eyes will be firmly cast on the top Indian talents in the pool as the likes of Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma, who all were purchased for big price tags in the WPL auctions. Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur will have a point to prove as she was preferred by the Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Pooja Vastrakar, Richa Ghosh, Renuka Singh, Yastika Bhatia and Devika Vaidya will also be the center of attraction having acquired big numbers in the auctions.

Can WPL recall IPL curtain-raiser?

It is worth reminding that the IPL kickstarted sensationally back in 2008 when Brendon McCullum scored an unbeaten 158 for the Kolkata Knight Riders. If the WPL is set for something similar, they too will attract a chunk of the audience throughout the globe. Big-name owners like Ambani's and Adani's are set to be in attendance for the opening contest with the female stars taking to the field.

The contest will kick start at 7:30 PM at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy with the toss taking place at 7:00 PM while there will also be an opening ceremony to mark the start of the inauguration of the tournament.

WPL 2023: Mumbai Indians face Gujarat Giants as new era usher in women's cricket

One couldn’t have asked for a better start to the much-hyped 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL). Harmanpreet Kaur’s blistering 65 off 30 balls and an all-around show from the bowling unit helped Mumbai Indians (MI) begin their WPL 2023 campaign with a massive 143-run over Gujarat Giants on Saturday. Following a crazy opening ceremony at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai that saw several Bollywood stars turn up for a special occasion, MI didn’t take long before further lighting up the arena with some explosive shots.

After a jittery start, Mumbai’s pair of Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt had Gujarat on the mat early on. Matthews’ 47 and England’s Sciver’s 23 had Mumbai in the driver’s seat before Harmanpreet Kaur took the charge and hit the fifth gear from ball one. The Indian women’s team captain not only slammed a 22-ball fifty, but she also hit seven successive fours across two overs in the later half of the innings to put Mumbai in a commanding position.

WPL 2023, MI-W vs GG-W: Mumbai's Harmanpreet Kaur, bowlers annihilate Gujarat Giants in opener

Mumbai Indians’ captain Harmanpreet Kaur lit up the inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League with a stupendous 65 off 30 balls in the first innings. Making the outing all about her, Harman smashed 14 fours during her blistering knock that saw MI score a mammoth 207 for five in 20 overs. Resuming from where she had left in the Women’s T20 World Cup, Harman began with the onslaught from ball one and kept punishing every bowler with each passing delivery.

She not only up the ante but also sent shivers down the spine of the Gujarat team by taking the attack to the opposition. Playing a captain’s knock, the right-handed batter completed her fifty in just 22 balls, striking at more than 200. In the 15th over, Harman hit Monica Patel for four successive fours before hitting Ashleigh Gardner for three back-to-back fours in the following over.

It clearly looked like the Gujarat bowlers didn’t have answers to Harman’s outstanding shots. However, as all good things must come to an end, Harman’s dream innings in WPL’s first-ever match ended on 65 off 30 balls. It was her compatriot Sneh Rana only who picked up the big fish for Gujarat, but by then the damage had already been done.

Meanwhile, after winning the toss Gujarat Giants decided to bowl first and picked up the early wicket of Yastika Bhatia in the third over. Windies’ Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt then revived MI’s innings with some beautiful-looking stroke play inside the Powerplay. While Matthews hammered three sixes in addition to scoring five fours in her innings of 47 off 31 balls, England’s Nat Sciver contributed with 23 that included five fours. Joining Harman at the other end, New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr also made her presence felt as she smashed an unbeaten 45 off 24 balls, hitting six fours and a six.

Mumbai Indians captain in the Women’s Premier League Harmanpreet Kaur reckons the introduction of WPL could actually bridge the quality gap between Indian and Australian players. Harman feels by sharing dressing room and rubbing shoulders with some of the top players from across the world, the Indians players can really benefit out it.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team recently lost the semi final clash against Australia by a narrow margin of five runs in the recently-held T20 World Cup in South Africa. Before that they went down crashing in the first-ever women’s T20 final in the Commonwealth Games last year too. Kaur, known for his captaincy and power-hitting skills, was a big name in the auction and grabbed a lot of eyeballs once her name popped up. MI had to fight hard as they got into a bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC), UP Warriorz (UW), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to bag Harmanpreet's services.

Harmanpreet has been a big name in the international circuit. She has been India's T20I captain since 2017 and succeeded Mithali Raj to become the ODI skipper after her international retirement last year. After Indian opener Smriti Mandhana was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 3.4 crores, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.8 crores (INR 18 million). Bangalore pulled out at the Rs 6.75 crore-mark, but both Delhi and Mumbai kept themselves in the chase for him. Eventually after a hard-fought bidding, it was Mumbai Indians who bought Cameron Green for Rs 17.5 crores.
