Mumbai Indians (MI) are prepared to make some smart acquisitions at the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction after releasing as many as 13 players from their existing squad. MI have parted ways with the legendary Kieron Pollard, who announced his retirement from the IPL hours before the retention deadline, and Australian star Daniel Sams among others.

The five-time champions have managed to retain their core group of players and are set to be stronger next season with the much-anticipated return of England pacer Jofra Archer, who missed last season due to his recovery from an injury. MI will also head into the new season with a new head coach - Mark Boucher.

Pollard is the only player released by Mumbai Indians who was among their four retentions last year. MI had retained the West Indies all-rounder for Rs 6 crore (INR 60 million) but will now head into the mini-auction with a larger purse courtesy of his decision to retire.

Apart from retired Pollard, MI have released a total of four overseas players and eight domestic payers, including the likes of Jaydev Unadkat, Basil Thampi, and Anmolpreet Singh among others.

West Indies legend Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), hours ahead of the retention deadline on Tuesday (November 15). Pollard is all set to return to Mumbai Indians next season in a different role as he will serve as the batting coach for the franchise in IPL 2023.

One of the greatest servants of the franchise over the years, Pollard joined Mumbai Indians in 2010 and went on to become one of the legends in the IPL. He played an instrumental role in Mumbai Indians' all five title-winning campaigns under captain Rohit Sharma and has been one of the most consistent performers for the franchise.

The former West Indies skipper spent 12 seasons with Mumbai Indians amassing 3412 runs and picking up 69 wickets in 189 matches for the five-time champions. He also captained the team in regular skipper Rohit's absence on a few occasions and was part of the leadership group at the franchise.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) completed the first trade in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) trading window ahead of the mini-auction next month. RCB have traded Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff to Mumbai Indians making him the first trade of the season.

Behrendorff, who has been part of the Mumbai Indians squad in the IPL in the past, will be rejoining the Rohit Sharma-led franchise ahead of the 2023 season. The left-arm pacer was bought by RCB for a sum of Rs 75 lakh (INR 7.5 million) in the player auction last year.

The Aussie quick has played 105 matches in his T20 career picking up a total of 117 wickets at an average of 23.12 and an economy rate of 7.41. He has two four-wicket hauls under his belt in the shortest format and has enough experience behind his back in T20s.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a mini player auction ahead of the start of the new season in 2023. Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final last season to lift their maiden IPL trophy in their debut campaign after successfully executing their strategies in the mega auction last year.

As per a report in the Times of India, the 2023 IPL auction is set to be held on December 16 in Bengaluru. IPL is also set to return to the traditional home and away format from next season and is likely to be staged entirely in India like last season.

Unlike the mega auction last time around where the eight old teams were asked to retain a maximum of four players, there will be no such cap on the ten teams this time. All ten teams can release and retain as many players as they like considering the budget in mind.

The overall purse of each team will be increased by Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) from Rs 90 crore (INR 900 million) to Rs 95 crore (INR 950 million) for the 2023 mini-auction. If a team decides to release none of their players, they will be left with the amount they had saved in the mega auction last year and the additional Rs 5 crore allotted to them.

Punjab Kings currently have the largest purse among all ten teams with Rs 3.45 crore (INR 34.5 million) remaining in their kitty followed by Chennai Super Kings (Rs 29.5 million), Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 15.5 million), Rajasthan Royals (Rs 9.5 million), Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 4.5 million) and Gujarat Titans (Rs 15 million).

Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals were all left with only Rs 1 million after the mega auction last year while Lucknow Super Giants exhausted their entire purse.

Despite it being a mini auction, a number of big names are expected to go under the hammer ahead of the IPL 2023 season. The likes of England all-rounder Sam Curran and Cameron Green among others can headline the show with several big stars released by the franchises also expected to be in the fray.

The franchises will also have to take the final call on the injury replacements roped in by them before and during IPL 2022. The likes of Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians were among six teams who roped in injury replacements.

These teams will have to decide whether they want to retain their player or the replacement player, or both while keeping the squad limit in mind. All ten teams will have to submit their final list of retained and released players to the BCCI by November 15.

IPL 2023 mini auction date revealed: Here is all you need to know

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting recalled how leaving Mumbai Indians changed a young Suryakumar Yadav's career in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Yadav, who is currently the no.2 ranked batter in T20Is, has come a long way in his career and has gone on to become an integral member of India's white-ball squad.

It was not an easy path to the national team for the 32-year-old, who had to wait until last year to make his debut for the Indian team. However, it took him little time in establishing his credentials as one of the most exciting batters in T20Is after getting his dream India debut.

A young Yadav was part of the Mumbai Indians' squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting was with the five-time champions. He rarely got chances in the playing XI and was traded to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014, a move that proved to be a game-changing one in his career.

Yadav became a vital cog in KKR's middle-order under Gambhir and played several match-winning knocks for the team as his stocks rose. He was picked up by Mumbai Indians in the 2018 player auction and has since played an instrumental role in Rohit Sharma & Co.'s success by helping them win two titles.

“When I was in Mumbai, he was an 18-19-year-old kid, a young man. He was in our squad not quite getting a game. The year after I left, he was traded to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) where his career started to turn around,” Ponting said in the ICC review.

“He got a bit of an opportunity in the middle order and then MI bought him back in the auction and has been a match-winning player for them for five or six seasons now, to the point that he is one of their retained players,” he added.

Yadav has been one of Mumbai Indians' best batters since joining the team in 2018. He has so far notched up 2036 runs in 68 matches for the five-time champions and was retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year.

He was rewarded for his consistent performances in the IPL and the domestic circuit by making his India debut last year and has since gone on to prove why he is so highly rated. The 32-year-old has been a prolific run-getter for India in T20Is and is set to be India's no.4 at the upcoming T20 World Cup this year.

Recalling his time with a young Yadav, Ponting said those who have been around him from a young age always knew the star India batter had talent in abundance and just needed the opportunities to prove himself at the highest level.

“Anyone who has seen him from a young age knew that he had an abundance of talent. The more he has played, the more he has learned about himself, the more different situations he has found himself in a game, he has found a way to not just survive, but thrive in the IPL at international level,” Ponting said.

The Indian cricket team's skipper Rohit Sharma recently offered fans some insight into how he ensures efficiency within the team and his captaincy by keeping matters absolutely simple. Sharma, who has enjoyed an impeccable run at the helm of the Indian team, revealed that he has primarily focussed on offering his players and teammates the freedom that they need to flourish.

He further admitted that ever since he took over the leadership of the team from Virat Kohli, he prioritised the practice of specifying roles and responsibilities for everyone, making the entire process extremely structured and systematic.

Sharma broke down his leadership technique in a video compilation that was recently shared by Star Sports on Twitter. In the video, he admitted that he emulated the same strategy that he used in the uber-popular IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, which bolstered their charge to lay claim to the mantle of the most successful IPL team in the history of the league.

"What I have done over the years with the Mumbai Indians franchise and also the time that I have led India, it's just keeping it very-very simple and not complicate things too much. Making sure that... Whatever I have spoken of before about giving the guys that freedom. Making them understand what their role is. That is what I will be expecting of myself, that's what I want to do for the team, for the players to make sure there is no confusion," asserted Sharma.

Rohit Sharma, like many other senior players on the Indian team's roster, has been offered the opportunity to rest up as the Men in Blue compete against Zimbabwe in a three-match ODI series. However, his next assignment is to lead the team's charge in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Faf du Plessis is all set to reunite with the franchise as he has been reportedly roped in by the CSK management as a marquee player for their team in South Africa's new T20 league. Cricket South Africa (CSA) is yet to name the T20 tournament which is set to get underway next year and will have six teams, all owned by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.

While CSK owners have bought the Johannesburg franchise in CSA's new T20 league, Mumbai Indians (MI) have bagged the Cape Town team. The owners of Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants have bought the Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Paarl and Durban franchises respectively.

All six franchises have already made some key signings as Wednesday (August 10) was the last day for the direct acquisition of players. Cricket South Africa had asked all six teams to submit a list of a maximum of five players they have signed with a minimum of one South African part of the list.

The CSA rules also state that a franchise can only have three foreigners as part of their final five with not more than two players from one country, and at least one uncapped player on the list. As per a report in Cricbuzz, all six teams have retained some of the players from their existing teams in the IPL.

As per Cricbuzz, CSK have roped in Du Plessis for their Johannesburg franchise. The former South Africa captain was part of the CSK squad in the IPL from 2011 to 2021 barring just two seasons in 2016 and 2017 when the team was banned from the competition. However, CSK couldn't retain Du Plessis in the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year as he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Apart from Du Plessis, CSK have also signed England all-rounder Moeen Ali for their Johannesburg franchise. Ali will now for a CSK-owned franchise in both the IPL and the South African league. Mumbai Indians, who have acquired the MI Cape Town team for the CSA T20 league, have signed a host of superstars.

The franchise on Thursday (August 11) confirmed they have roped in Rashid Khan, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone for the South African T20 league. As per Cricbuzz, Delhi Capitals have retained their South African pacer Anrich Nortje while Sunrisers Hyderabad, who own the Port Elizabeth team, have retained Aiden Markram.

India's current head coach Rahul Dravid remains a big name in world cricket. The legendary cricketer had a highly successful career as one of India's main batters during his playing days, from 1996-2021. Dravid amassed 13,288 Test and 10,889 ODI runs and is now being looked upon as a coach who can change India's fortunes and help them end their ICC-title drought since 2013.

During Dravid's playing days, he was known to be a stylish batter who strived hard for his runs in the middle. The former Indian captain could also play the aggressor's role and, hence, was a versatile batter. His on-field demeanour was that of a calm and composed player, who didn't lose his cool very often on the 22-yard cricket strip. Nonetheless, whenever Dravid got angry, it made heads turn. During IPL 2013's Qualifier 2 match, between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Dravid gave an earful to Mitchell Johnson.

Dravid had hit Johnson for a four, as RR opted to bat first, when the Aussie speedster said something to 'The Wall'. While the Indian star batter hit him for another four, on the very next delivery, Dravid responded to Johnson and their verbal spat caught everyone's attention. Here's the throwback video:

While Dravid started the innings on fire, he departed for a 37-ball 43. Stuart Binny's quickfire 17-ball 27 propelled the one-time winners to a decent score, i.e. 165 for 6. However, it wasn't enough as Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai chased down the target on the penultimate ball with four wickets in hand. Dwayne Smith top-scored for MI, with a 44-ball 62, but Harbhajan Singh ended as the Player-of-the-Match for his 3 for 23.

Eventually, Johnson-starrer MI went onto win the IPL 2013 edition, beating MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 23 runs in the final, played at the same venue.

The RP Sanjeev Goenka group, which paid a record sum of Rs 7090 crore to buy the Lucknow IPL franchise late last year, picked up the Durban team, while Rajasthan Royals bought the Paarl team. Pretoria has been taken by Jindal South West Sports, which is headed by Parth Jindal, co-owner of the Delhi Capitals in IPL.

The league will be run by Cricket South Africa in partnership with television broadcaster SuperSport. The board is expected to make a formal announcement of the new owners and the cities they will represent once the paperwork is completed.

Notably, this new tournament is CSA`s third attempt to start a sustainable franchise-based T20 league after the failure of Global League T20 and the Mzansi Super League due to various reasons.

IPL franchise owners buy all six teams in South Africa's new T20 league: Report

Hardik Pandya enjoyed a dream run with his new team Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as he led the franchise to their maiden title in their debut season. Hardik was appointed as the captain of the Titans ahead of the new season after being roped in by GT in the players' draft. The star Indian all-rounder was released by his former side Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the mega auction.

Mumbai Indians' decision to let go of Pandya had left many in shock as he is the best all-rounder India have in white-ball cricket at present. Hardik had made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians back in 2015 and played an instrumental role in their success with both the bat and the ball. He had not played for any other IPL team in his career before being released by MI.

However, MI's decision to release him proved to be a blessing in disguise for Pandya, who went on to inspire Gujarat Titans to a memorable IPL triumph in their maiden season. However, the all-rounder was not happy with MI's decision to release him and was left shocked when the franchise didn't retain him.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently revealed Pandya was left shocked when he was released by the five-time champions. However, the extra responsibility of leading the team at Titans did wonders for him in IPL 2022.

"It shocked him when he was not retained by Mumbai Indians," Shastri said in the commentary box during the 2nd ODI between India and England at Lord's on Thursday.

"It was tough... MI had Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharna, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya so they had to pick three out of those five. Ishan Kishan was obviously picked in the auction.

"He was picked by Gujarat Titans, where he was given the extra responsibility of captaining, which did him a world of good. When given responsibility, he's a completely different cricket as opposed to just batting and fielding," added the former India head coach.

MI had problems of plenty when it come to retentions ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction as they had a squad full of match-winners. The franchise decided to keep hold of skipper Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard as their 4 retentions while letting go of Pandya and Ishan Kishan among others.

However, MI managed to buy back Ishan at the auction while Pandya was roped in by GT in the draft before the auction. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw a number of youngsters once again rise to prominence with their impactful performances for their teams throughout the tournament. While the likes of Umran Malik and Mohsin Khan turned out to be the finds of the tournament, several other young guns like Rajat Patidar, Jitesh Sharma and Ayush Badoni also impressed with their talent and skills. Some of the youngsters turned out to be the most valuable players of the season considering their low buying price and brilliant show on the field.

While the youngsters rose to the occasion yet again, a number of superstars failed to deliver in the recently-concluded season. It was a forgetful season for the 'Big 3' - MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While Dhoni still managed to dazzle with the bat in patches despite being past his prime at 40, a lot was expected from Kohli and Rohit, who struggled to deliver throughout the season.

As per an analysis by the Times of India, Rohit, Dhoni and Kohli were among the least value money buys in IPL 2022. In a report, TOI analysed players' data and statistics based on their performance and the price they were bought for by their respective teams in the recently-concluded IPL 2022. The players were given points per million INR spent on them and were rated accordingly.

Punjab Kings' wicket-keeper batter Jitesh Sharma turned out to be the most valuable player with 241.8 points. He was bought for a sum of just Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million) and scored 234 runs for his franchise at a strike rate of 163.63. Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mohsin Khan finished at the second spot for his 14 wickets in 9 games at a stunning economy of 5.96. Mohsin was bought by LSG for Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million)

On the other hand, Kohli, who struggled to get going with the willow throughout the season, was placed at the 157th spot in the overall rankings having managed only 2.6 points per million. The RCB star scored 341 runs in 16 matches and failed to power his team to the final. Dhoni finished at the 161st spot with 232 runs in 14 games while Rohit managed to earn only 1 point per million and got the 178th spot.

The RCB star scored 341 runs in 16 matches and failed to power his team to the final. Dhoni finished at the 161st spot with 232 runs in 14 games while Rohit managed to earn only 1 point per million and got the 178th spot. Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli among least valuable players for their franchises in IPL 2022 - Report

IPL 2022 roundup: From MS Dhoni's confirmation to Gujarat Titans' historic triumph

Hardik Pandya led Gujarat Titans (GT) to a memorable triumph in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. After dominating the proceedings in the league stage of the tournament, GT defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) twice in the first Qualifier and the final to cap off a memorable season with the elusive trophy. Gujarat Titans became only the second team after RR to win the IPL in their debut season.

With ten teams entering the competition this year, Hardik was among the new captains to watch out for in the tournament. He was roped in by Gujarat Titans in the players' draft after being released by his former side Mumbai Indians (MI). The star all-rounder was also named captain of the team and led the side exceptionally well throughout the tournament.

Hardik was brilliant as a leader and also led from the front with the bat as he finished as the highest run-getter for his side with 487 runs from 15 matches at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of over 131. He also picked up 8 wickets with the ball and delivered a match-winning all-round performance in the final against the Royals.

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja said Mumbai Indians fans would be feeling the pain after witnessing Hardik lift the IPL 2022 trophy following his exit from MI. Hardik had joined MI in 2015 and played only for the five-time champions before being released earlier this year. MI played a key role in Hardik's development as he also went on to become a regular for India across formats.

“He is one of those who gets inspired by the crowd. He likes the crowd, likes the people. If there is any dard (pain) it will be felt by the Mumbai fans. They will probably feeling that pain today, not the Gujarat fans,” Jadeja said on Cricbuzz talking about Hardik's incredible feat with the Titans.

Jadeja credited Mumbai Indians for their role in Hardik's growth and said the franchise made the star all-rounder what he is today. Not just Hardik, but Mumbai Indians have also unearthed the likes of Krunal Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, who became strong pillars of the franchise ever since.

"He has picked the best from each one of them. You have got to keep learning, it is a process in life. Experience will always make you better. He has had a great run here but he is definitely going to learn as he grows. He has probably grasped most from (MI)," said Jadeja about Hardik's growth at MI.

He has come from Baroda, played local cricket there but Mumbai Indians made Hardik Pandya. The Pandya we see today is thanks to Mumbai Indians. Rohit Sharma the captain and everyone else over there. I think MI has a better setup to educate you," he added.

Mumbai Indians fans will be feeling the pain: Ajay Jadeja on Hardik Pandya inspiring GT to maiden IPL title

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) weren't expected to go very far in IPL 2022 edition. Comprising some key players and also a lot of inexperience in their squad, Gujarat stunned one and all as different players rose up to the occasion in every game to see them top the group stage and then become the first-ever team to reach the IPL 2022 final. Further, they were never threatened by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the summit clash as they romped past the one-time winners by seven wickets and claim the trophy in their maiden season.

Talking about the contest, the Sanju Samson-led RR franchise opted to bat first at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday evening (May 29). Despite a good start by Yashasvi Jaiswal, RR never got going after the dismissals of captain Sanju and in-form opener Jos Buttler to manage only a paltry 130-9. Captain Hardik returned with 3 for 17 to lead from the front as Rajasthan was restricted to a below-par total. In reply, Shubman Gill's sedate 45 not out, Hardik's 30-ball 34 and David Miller's blistering 19-ball 32 propelled GT to an easy win as they clinched the title in their first-ever IPL season (joining RR to become only the second team to achieve this feat).

Thus, with GT claiming their first-ever trophy in the premier T20 tournament, here's a complete list of IPL winners since 2008:

Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans claim maiden title: Complete list of IPL winners since 2008

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a shambolic campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they were the first team to be knocked out from the race for the playoffs and finished at the bottom of the table with just eight points from 14 matches. The five-time champions went on to lose a record eight matches in a row at the start of the season and could never recover from the poor start as they eventually bowed out of the tournament.

However, putting the disappointing season behind MI star Suryakumar Yadav is already looking forward to the next season in 2023 and has set out the goals for himself and the franchise. Suryakumar, who is one of the key players in the Mumbai Indians squad, wants the team to bounce back and win their sixth title anyhow next season.

In a video shared by Mumbai Indians on social media, Suryakumar spoke about the franchise's goals for the next season and said they will have to add another trophy to their cabinet. "We've to lift the sixth (trophy) anyhow. It is unfortunate that this can't happen this year, fifth or sixth trophy, but next year, we have to add one more trophy anyhow," said Suryakumar.

Suryakumar didn't have the best of campaigns for the Mumbai Indians season as his campaign was marred with injuries. The star batter had to miss the first few matches for his team due to a forearm injury before making a strong comeback. He went on to score 303 runs at an impressive average of 43.29 and a strike rate of over 145.

He was later ruled out of the tournament once again after picking up another injury before the end of MI's campaign. Suryakumar was one of the four players retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of the mega auction this year and will be hopeful of continuing his purple patch with the bat to help his team lift their fifth title in IPL 2023.

Virat, Rohit's barren run to MI-CSK's mighty fall: 5 surprising elements from IPL 2022's league stage

On Sunday (May 22), the BCCI selection committee released an 18-member Team India squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series versus South Africa, which is set to be held in India from June 09. While regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, KL Rahul has been given the task to lead the side comprising some young and veteran cricketers.

While some uncapped players such as Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh have been rewarded following their performances in IPL 2022, Ishan Kishan managed to hold onto his place despite an ordinary run in the 15th season for the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI). Being the most expensive player in this year's mega auction, the 23-year-old Ishan ended the 15th edition with 418 runs at a strike rate of 120.11 in 14 matches. He wasn't at his consistent best and surely felt the pressure of a heavy price tag.

Thus, many raised concerns about seeing Ishan's name in the 18-man squad, however, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has backed the selection of the MI and India opener. He cited examples of Rohit and Virat's ordinary runs with the bat in the ongoing season and defended Ishan. For the unversed, Rohit ended with not even a single half-century whereas Kohli too struggled for runs but has managed two half-centuries in 14 games with his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) still alive in the competition with a hard-earned playoffs ticket.

And that was one big reason why MI struggled this season," Latif said on YouTube show 'Caught Behind'.

IPL 2022 becomes the first-ever season where both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have not qualified for the playoffs. In IPL 2016, both teams were also not part of the playoffs, however, CSK didn't feature back due to their two-year suspension in the spot-fixing scandal. Thus, it surely is the end of a magnificent era.

The MS Dhoni-starrer defending champions CSK ended at the ninth position in the points table. On the other hand, five-time winners and IPL's most successful team Mumbai couldn't avoid the wooden spoon despite a winning end to their forgettable campaign. Both sides returned with four victories and as many as ten defeats each. In fact, this was also the first time both franchises endured nine, or more, defeats in a season. In a nutshell, it can be said that two toppers fell flat and occupied the last two positions in the overall standings as other teams have surely mastered the art of winning big moments against them. However, the bigger question remains -- is MI-CSK's drubbing really a shocker? Well, it was always on the cards.

Many connoisseurs of the game might be quick to point out that the 'law of averages' was always going to bite the two famed sides. However, more than that CSK-MI's muddled approach, questionable team selections, playing styles, strategies, etc. were some notable reasons for their massive downfall.

1) Poor approach to the mega auction: Prior to the season, MI-CSK's team management's approach remained below par. After letting go of some big names in their roster, MI only managed to re-buy Ishan Kishan. Their replacements for the Pandya brothers, Quinton de Kock, Trent Boult, etc. were never really impressive (after including Daniel Sams, Riley Meredith, etc.). The Men in Blue also didn't purchase a solid spinner to spearhead the middle-overs. Murugan Ashwin did impress, however, he was also taken to the cleaners during some high-scorers. CSK, on the other hand, re-bought their core players, who seem to be well past their prime. It was an auction to look ahead, however, CSK's conservative approach sealed their fate then and there.

One might argue that CSK did pick young guns such as Mukesh Choudhary, Maheesh Theeshana, Simranjit Singh, etc., nonetheless, they never cared to properly rebuild their bowling unit. Either they had international bowlers woefully out of form, or only good to chip in with few overs, or it turned out to be too much reliance on youngsters in Deepak Chahar's absence.

2) Captaincy and team management woes: CSK isn't a team that makes headlines for captaincy woes and reports of a rift between a player, or players, and team management. This season saw them tick off both the boxes. Firstly, if Dhoni was sure to give up captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja much before the season started, Jadeja still looked like a fish out of the water. His approach was half-baked whereas, in some crunch games, he seemed out of the picture with Dhoni leading the charge. Lastly, when Jadeja relinquished captaincy and Dhoni returned to the post officially, reports of a rift between CSK team management and Jadeja took precedence. Even if the reports have been quashed completely, something was surely not right in the way things were handled in the Yellow Army camp.

3) Dubious selections and strategies: Both MI and CSK have been successful as they follow a similar template, i.e. backing their group of players and accomodating a change in strategy when needed. However, IPL 2022 saw both teams make some surprising calls in terms of team selection and erring in strategies. While CSK admitted to have not read the pitch properly on a few occasions (read Dhoni's post-match comments after their second loss to Gujarat Titans), they didn't back Devon Conway after his failure on debut. MI, on the other hand, dropped Tim David -- who was roped in for INR 82.5 million -- after a few flop shows. Similarly, MI didn't go all-out in the usage of Jasprit Bumrah with him not opening the bowling in several matches. Meanwhile, CSK's rotation of bowlers and top order's timid approach never saw them coming to their usual best. During Jadeja's captaincy, the rotation of bowlers was also not up to the mark.

These factors led to both CSK and MI failing to emerge on top in several close encounters (versus Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, etc.). There was utter chaos, a lack of role clarity and imbalance among batters and bowlers, especially at the initial stages, to confirm both sides' early exit.

4) Lack of form, injury to key players ruining it all: To add salt to their wounds, Chennai and Mumbai's star players never really stood tall. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Kieron Pollard, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc. never threatened opposition camps with their consistency or form. Bumrah wasn't among wickets at regular intervals, barring a game where he ended with a five-fer, whereas Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Dwayne Bravo, and Robin Uthappa did their best but it wasn't enough.

MI and CSK's big buys also underperformed. While Ishan, the most expensive player of this year's mega auction, ended with 400-plus runs, he struck at 121.11. On the other hand, CSK missed the services of Chahar, who remains injured and out of action. Injuries to Jadeja-Suryakumar Yadav in the fag end of the league stage also hurt the wounded CSK and MI line-up.

Hence, both CSK and MI are deservingly out of the playoffs race. As the two are highly successful in IPL, expect them to bounce back sooner than later. However, both MI and CSK need to go back to the drawing board to rethink their approach, and playing style, revamp next year and be more ruthless as the tournament is now much more difficult to crack with the addition of two new teams.

IPL 2022: How MS Dhoni's CSK and Rohit Sharma-led MI's debacle was always on the cards

Royal Challengers Bangalore sneeked into the play-offs after Mumbai Indians broke Delhi Capitals' heart with a five-wicket win in their last IPL match here on Saturday.

Already out of contention, MI played partypoopers as they first restricted DC to 159 for 7 with Jasprit Bumrah snapping three wickets and then returned to overhaul the target in 19.1 overs to knock the 2020 finalists out of the tournament.

While Ishan Kishan (48) and Dewald Brevis (37) kept MI in the hunt, it was Tim David's 11-ball 34-run cameo that brought the five-time champions back into the chase. Tilak Varma also chipped in with a crucial 17-ball 21.

With MI at 95 for 3 in 14.3 overs, DC skipper Rishabh Pant made a strategic blunder as he refused to go for DRS after David nicked the first ball of his innings but the onfield umpire didn't give him out.

It came back to haunt DC as David slammed fours and sixes at will to bring down the equation to 15 off 14 balls. Ramandeep then provided the finishing touch with a six-ball 13.

DC finished with 14 points to remain in the fifth spot, while RCB joined Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants into the play-offs with 16 points.

Defending the total, left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed looked in good rhythm as he bowled a sensational first two overs, conceding just 2. He bowled full outside off-stump to trouble the openers, mainly Rohit Sharma (2).

Anrich Nortje finally put an end to Rohit's struggle with the MI skipper chipping one to mid-on.

Ishan and Brevis then added 51 runs off 37 balls but Kuldeep Yadav (1/33) broke the partnership with David Warner taking a fine catch to get rid of the former.

Brevis took on the attack to the opposition and smashed two sixes and a four off Kuldeep, who could have had him but skipper Pant dropped a sitter in the 12th over to add to the agony of the bowler.

However, Brevis dragged one on to his stumps as MI slipped to 95 for 3 in the 15th over.

After that it was a David show as hit a six over deep mid-wicket off Shardul Thakur.

David and Varma hit a four a six to accumulate 13 runs off the 16th over. Khaleel then conceded 17 with David smashing a four and a six.

Needing 29 from 18 balls, David clobbered Shardul for two maximums and also completed the fifty run stand to reduce the equation to 15 off 13 balls.

Thakur finally removed David, who hit a full toss to Prithvi Shaw at extra cover but by then it was too late.
Earlier, opting to field, MI bowlers, led by Bumrah (3/25) left DC tottering at 50 for 4 in 8.4 overs but

Rovman Powell and skipper Pant (39 off 33 balls) shared 75 off 44 balls to ressurect the innings and take them to a decent total.

Daniel Sams (1/30) and Riley Mereditch (0/9 in 2 overs) bowled well as did the spin duo of Mayank Markande (1/26) and Hrithik Shooken (0/34).

Ramandeep Singh (2/29 in 2 overs) also managed to scalp two wickets.

Back after recovering from a bout of typhoid, Shaw (24) looked in good touch but Sams produced the first breakthrough when he had Warner caught by Bumrah at short third man.

Bumrah then turned the heat as he first found the outside edge of Mitchell Marsh with Rohit taking a low catch and then returned to sent back Shaw with an unplayable bouncer.

It was time for Markande to shine next as Sarfaraz Khan nicked one outside the off-stump to see DC slump to 50 for four in ninth over.

With Shokeen and Markande bowling in tandum, DC scored their lowest total at the halfway mark this season -- 55 for four.

While Pant dropped anchor, Powell exploded in the 12th over, smashing Shokeen for two maximums and a four to pick up 20 runs.

Markande was next in line as Powell deposited him over long-off, before MI conceded a bye four.
Meredith bowled a tight over, conceding just two.

Ramandeep then bowled three wides and conceded a six and a four before taking Pant's wicket in his final ball.

Powell then pulled Bumrah over deep square leg, while Axar Patel (19 not out) produced a timely six off Sams.

However, Bumrah produced his trademark toe-crushing yorker to disturb the timbers of Powell and nearly had another wicket, only if Brevis could have held on to a one-handed catch.

Ramandeep took a wicket in the final over which yielded 11 runs.

IPL 2022: RCB clinch final playoff berth after MI beat DC by five wickets

Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the clash between the two sides in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (May 21). Bumrah breathed fire with the ball as he went on to pick up a three-wicket haul to dismantle the DC batting line-up and achieve a staggering IPL feat.

Bumrah piled on the pressure on Delhi Capitals after Daniel Sams dismissed David Warner cheaply on just 5 off 6 balls to draw the first blood for his team. Bumrah got rid of in-form Mitchell Marsh on a golden duck before bagging the wickets of Prithvi Shaw and Rovman Powell to finish with excellent figures of 3/25 in his 4 overs.

With the help of Bumrah's heroics, MI managed to restrict DC to 159 runs and went on to thrash them by five wickets to knock them out of the tournament. Bumrah became the first Indian bowler in the history of IPL to take 15 wickets in as many as seven consecutive seasons.

No other Indian bowler has managed to achieve the feat since the inception of the tournament in 2008. Bumrah also surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the second-highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in IPL history. Jasprit Bumrah torments Delhi Capitals, becomes 1st Indian to achieve staggering feat in IPL

Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant made a huge DRS blunder during his side's must-win clash against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 on Sunday (May 22). The DRS error from Pant potentially cost his side the game as they were knocked out of the race for the playoffs after getting thrashed by five wickets at the hand of Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Batting first, Delhi Capitals rode on crucial knocks from skipper Pant (39) and Rovman Powell (43) to post a fighting total of 159 runs on the board in 20 overs. In reply, Mumbai Indians found themselves reeling at 95/3 inside 15 overs at one stage before Tim David's sensational cameo saw them cross the line comfortably and end the season with a win.

David slammed a brilliant 34 off just 11 balls laced with 4 sixes and 2 fours. However, the Australian all-rounder could have been sent packing early in the 15th over itself when he edged a delivery from Shardul Thakur which was caught by Pant behind the stumps. However, the DC skipper didn't go for a review after the on-field umpire ruled David not out.

Delhi Capitals had a review remaining in their kitty but Pant decided not to use it. Replays later showed there was a clear edge off David's bat before the ball flew into Pant's gloves. David's wicket could have potentially taken the game away from MI and put DC in a solid position but Pant's error ended up costing them the game.

It was not a good outing for Rishabh Pant on Saturday as a couple of errors from the Delhi Capitals skipper led to his team’s defeat against Mumbai Indians in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 encounter. DC needed a win against the lowest ranked side in the tournament to book their playoff berth, but they were beaten by five wickets thanks to brilliant performances from Tim David and Jasprit Bumrah.

After posting a modest total on a tricky pitch, Pant dropped a sitter to dismiss the dangerous Dewald Brevis and then, he did not opt for a review after the DC players were convinced that Tim David was caught behind. The replay showed a clear edge and it proved to be the costliest mistake in the match.

'Fumbles can happen': Rohit Sharma has his say on Rishabh Pant's captaincy errors against MI

It is extremely rare to see cricketers supporting some other franchise in the Indian Premier League but with the playoff hopes in the balance, Mumbai Indians will be enjoying the support of all Royal Challengers Bangalore players and fans as they take on Delhi Capitals on Saturday. RCB are currently in fourth position with 16 points and a win for MI will mean that DC will manage only 14 points. But a win for DC will effectively end the rate because of the high net run rate for Rishabh Pant & Co.

IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli cheer for MI ahead of crucial match against DC

Delhi Capitals (DC) will be aiming to seal a berth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 playoffs when they take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in a must-win clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (May 21). With 14 points from 13 matches so far this season, DC need a win against MI to seal a berth in the playoffs.

Ahead of DC's must-win clash against MI, former India opener Aakash Chopra has issued a warning to Pant and has urged him to keep his ego aside and bat sensibly rather than going after the bowlers without assessing the situation and playing reckless shots. Pant has not had the best of seasons with the bat for DC this year.

While he has managed to be among the runs and has also scored at a good pace, he has been far from consistent. Pant has so far notched up 301 runs in 13 matches at an average of 30.10 and a strike rate of over 157 without a single half-century. He has also been blamed for throwing his wicket away by playing some reckless and unwanted shots once again this year.

Chopra has urged Pant to set his ego aside and focus on producing a match-winning knock for the team rather than going after the bowlers from the word go.

"Rishabh Pant needs to keep his ego aside and look at the bigger picture. He is a much more capable player than his performances have suggested so far. Whenever Delhi have won, his average hasn't been great. So there hasn't been a match-winning contribution," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Delhi Capitals (DC) have their fate in their own hands as they lock horns with struggling Mumbai Indians (MI) in their final league game of the season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (May 21). DC have 14 points from 13 matches so far in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and a win against Mumbai Indians will confirm their berth in the playoffs.

While Mumbai Indians have already been knocked out of the tournament and would be hoping to finish the season on a high with a win in their final game, Delhi Capitals have all to play for. However, five-time champions MI can stop DC's bid for winning their maiden IPL crown this season.

Delhi Capitals will be heading into the game on a confident note having defeated Punjab Kings in their last encounter. While Mitchell Marsh has been in terrific form with the bat, David Warner continues to fire at the top for DC. Skipper Rishabh Pant has had his ups and downs but will be hoping to take his side over the line with the bat tonight.

DC's bowling attack has also been far from consistent this season. However, Shardul Thakur's four-wicket haul against Punjab Kings in their last game will inspire confidence in the Pant-led side. DC will also hope for the likes of Anrich Nortje and Khaleel Ahmed to step up in the Powerplay and the death overs to ensure MI batters are restricted cheaply.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, will look to continue giving chances to the youngsters in the team in order to look forward to the next season. MI might hand a much-awaited debut to Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun Tendulkar in the game against Delhi Capitals tonight as they hope to finish the season on a high.

Delhi Capitals will be looking to book their spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 playoffs while Mumbai Indians aim to finish the competition with a win as the two sides face each other on Saturday.

Head-to-head

The encounter between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals has been an extremely close affair with the five-time champions enjoying a narrow 16-15 advantage in the 31 matches against DC.

Stats

There will be interesting player battles on both ends as the duo of Khaleel Ahmed and Axar Patel have troubled Rohit Sharma in the past as they have dismissed him three times and have not conceded more than run-a-ball. On the other end, Jasprit Bumrah will be looking forward to facing Rishabh Pant – a batsman he has dismissed six times with just 47 runs conceded in 42 deliveries.

Trivia

It has been a contrasting story for both side when it comes to opening partnerships as the pair of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma have the second-best record in the tournament while DC’s opening pairs have produced just 21 runs in the last five matches for the first wicket. However, there is some good news as David Warner enjoys facing MI and with six fifties and a strike rate of 138.87 against the five-time champions, the Australia batsman will be a key asset for DC in their playoff race.

SRH successfully defended a total of 193 runs after Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a stunning maiden 19th over including a wicket to take the game away from Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians required 19 runs to win off the last two overs when Bhuvneshwar came out to bowl the penultimate over for SRH. He dismissed MI debutant Sanjay Yadav on the second delivery of the over before bowling four dot balls against Bumrah to complete a wicket-maiden 19th over.

Young Fazalhaq Farooqi went on to defend 19 off the final over to seal a thrilling 3-run win for SRH. IPL 2022: Jasprit Bumrah becomes first Indian pacer to achieve elusive feat in T20s

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise have had a torrid run in IPL 2022 edition. The five-time winners were the first team to bow out of the playoffs race after losing eight games on the trot. Team selection, inconsistency among their top batters and some marquee players never rising to the occasion can be touted to be one of the main reasons for Mumbai's downfall in IPL 15.

However, many believe MI missed a trick by not giving Tim David, the Singaporean-Australian cricketer, a long run throughout the season. After failures in his first two outings for the franchise, David was dropped from the playing XI and warmed the bench for over a month before finally making a comeback. Since then, he has had scores of 44*, 13, 16* and an 18-ball 46 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), in match 65 on Tuesday evening (May 17). He almost took the side home in their three-run loss at the hands of SRH before his departure in the 18th over.

Thus, MI have been criticised for dropping David initially. Post the SRH defeat, opener Ishan Kishan defended the team management's call and said, "IPL is a big stage and the decisions taken by the management are for the betterment of the team. Nothing personal in it. Unfortunately, he (David) was dropped from the team. But if you look at the other way, he prepared himself to play on the Indian wickets. So, being dropped isn't always bad as it gives the player an opportunity to analyse his game. The comeback he has made and the innings he has played have been mind-blowing. So, it was a good call (to drop David)."

Given David was fetched by the MI franchise for a whopping INR 82.5 million in the mega auction earlier this year. Hence, it was expected of the Rohit-led franchise to give him a long rope in the playing XI. Nonetheless, he is now making a solid mark and looks certain to be retained by the franchise for a long time.

'Being dropped isn't always bad' - Ishan Kishan defends MI management for initially dropping Tim David

Rahul Tripathi batted like a man on a mission before Umran Malik sizzled with his pace as Sunrisers Hyderabad kept their slim IPL playoff hopes alive with a three-run win over Mumbai Indians here on Tuesday. Tripathi scored 76 from 44 balls to guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to a challenging 193 for six. He was ably complemented by Priyam Garg (42) and Nicholas Pooran (38).

Malik (3/23 in three overs) then produced a sensational performance, while the seasoned Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/26 off 4) bowled a wicket maiden in the crucial 19th over to stop MI at 190 for seven despite the best efforts by Rohit Sharma (48), Ishan Kishan (43) and Tim David (46).

The victory keeps SRH in the playoffs race on paper as they move up to 12 points. They need to win their last game and hope for other results to go their way.

Chasing 194, Rohit was at his effortless best and looked set for a big score. He gave a solid start to Mumbai's chase alongside Kishan, with whom he shared a 95-run opening stand. The two plundered 17 runs in the ninth over bowled by Malik, with the pacer guilty of bowling two no balls and a wide.

But two overs later, Kane Williamson's decision to bowl Washington Sundar (1/36) paid dividends as Rohit holed out to Jagadeesha Suchith in the deep. Kishan, who looked uncomfortable against Malik's short balls, followed his skipper in the next over as the Jammu pacer, who had a horrible first over, redeemed himself. He speared the ball at the stumps from round the wicket for Priyam Garg to complete a fine catch at mid-on.

The duo provided another breakthrough as Malik bowled another bouncer forcing Daniel Sams to pull. Garg jumped high above his head with his arms fully stretched to complete a brilliant catch at midwicket.

With 44 needed off 18, the big-hitting David blazed away to 46 off just 18 balls to keep alive Mumbai's hope for a fourth win this season. David hit four sixes off the 18th over bowled by T Natarajan, including a monstrous 114m hit, to bring the equation down to 19 from 12. However, Natarajan (0/60) managed to redeem himself off the last ball as David was run out.

The seasoned Bhuvneshwar bowled a wicket maiden 19th over to tilt the game back in SRH's favour. Earlier, Tripathi, who struck his third half century of the season with the help of nine fours and three sixes, set himself up brilliantly for a memorable knock.

Invited to bat, the Sunrisers' gamble to play Garg at the top of the order paid off. The 21-year-old played a fine knock while sharing a 78-run partnership with Tripathi after the in-form Abhishek Sharma (9) was sent back in the third over.

Garg, who was dropped on 10, made good use of his reprieve as he smashed the ball four times to the fence and twice over it in his 26-ball innings.

At the other end, Tripathi looked in his element. He smacked Jasprit Bumrah (1/32) for a six and back-to-back fours in the fifth over. Tripathi and Garg collected 57 in a productive powerplay and maintained a healthy run-rate which was close to 10 runs per over while batting responsibly.

Once Garg was caught and bowled by medium-pacer Ramandeep Singh (3/20), Pooran, who was promoted to No. 3, joined the party. The flamboyant left-hander smoked two consecutive sixes over long on and deep backward square off Riley Meredith (1/44) in the 13th over before whacking Mayank Markande (0/31) for a boundary and a maximum in the next over.

The MI bowlers, led by Ramandeep, were able to stage a mini-comeback as they got rid of Pooran, Tripathi and Aiden Markram (2) in the space of eight balls.

Batting down the order, skipper Kane Williamson's (8 not out) struggles continued as he was unable to get the big shots going. The Sunrisers, who were looking set for a 200 plus score, could manage only one boundary in the last two overs, which yielded 19 runs.
