Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a campaign to forget in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they were the first team to be knocked out of the race for the playoffs this season. MI went on a record losing streak of eight matches at the start of the season to find themselves reeling at the bottom of the points table and have failed to recover ever since.

With just two games in hand, Mumbai Indians made a couple of changes in their penultimate game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday. MI brought in Mayank Markande and Sanjay Yadav in the playing XI to give a chance to the youngsters before the conclusion of the season.

The final two matches for Mumbai Indians are dead-rubber and there were reports that Arjun Tendulkar could feature in the game against SRH. However, the son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar failed to make the cut as Rohit Sharma named his playing XI against SRH on Tuesday. Nonetheless, there have been calls for Arjun's inclusion in the playing XI.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra wants Mumbai Indians to hand an IPL debut to Arjun Tendulkar too as the franchise continues to give chances to a host of youngsters in their remaining matches.

Match 65 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (May 17). While MI franchise were the first to be out of the playoffs race, their win would do a world of good for teams such as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Along with the SRH, the above four franchises are also in the fight for the playoffs spot, mainly targetting the fourth slot, and, hence, MI's win will dent SRH's chances.

Talking about the Rohit Sharma-led five-time winners, they have had a torrid run in IPL 2022. Losing as many as eight games on the trot, MI finally got off the mark in their ninth attempt and have been competitive ever since to have won two more from the next three outings. Thus, they will hope to end the season on a high with back-to-back wins and avoid a wooden spoon finish.

On the other hand, the Kane Williamson-led SRH franchise have had a peculiar season. While they lost their opening two games, they won five games in succession and have now conceded the momentum with a five-match losing streak. Thus, they have succumbed to pressure in the most crunch moment of the league stage and are nearing an early exit. Will their limited resources stand tall and take them into the playoffs?

Match prediction for SRH vs MI clash: Both sides have a good rivalry, with MI leading SRH 10-8 in the head-to-head battle. Chasing has been preferable here at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and both captains will fancy it as both teams have different agendas and takeaways from the contest. IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians sign Akash Madhwal as Suryakumar Yadav's replacement for last two games

Match 59 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the arch-rivals and bottom-lying Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on each other at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday evening (May 12). The match presented another opportunity for the five-time winners and already-eliminated Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise to add another two points in their kitty whereas it was a must-win clash for MS Dhoni's CSK.

Being alive in the playoffs race by the barest of margins, Chennai couldn't afford to let loose. However, nothing clicked for the defending champions and four-time winners as they conceded the game by 5 wickets. Being asked to bat first, amid power cut issues, CSK were off to a horrible start and soon reduced to 29-5 courtesy Daniel Sams' three quick strikes. Their top-order players couldn't even take the help of the DRS in the first ten deliveries due to the power cut. Barring Dhoni's 36*, no one stood tall as CSK folded for their second-lowest IPL total (97).

In reply, Rohit & Co. were also reduced to 33 for 4 due to Mukesh Choudhary's early blows. However, a sedate 48-run fifth-wicket stand between young guns Hrithik Shoukeen-Tilak Verma steadied MI's innings as they won by five wickets.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Mumbai Indians thrash Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets

Match 59 of IPL 2022 edition between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) got underway in an unusual manner on Thursday evening (May 12), at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Firstly, the coin toss was delayed by a bit due to one of the floodlights going off. After Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise opted to bowl first, both sides were informed that they couldn't use the DRS for sometime due to powercut at the stadium. Thus, CSK opener and in-form batter Devon Conway paid the price by getting dismissed on the first ball he faced, which was clearly sliding down the leg side. Nonetheless, the New Zealander couldn't take the decision upstairs due to the unfortunate power cut.

The DRS became available after ten completed deliveries. By then, Dhoni-led CSK were tottering at 5-3 with Conway, Moeen Ali and Robin Uthappa perishing for cheap.

The defending champions and four-time winners Chennai, who are playing a must-win match to keep the playoff hopes alive, have paid a big price for the power shortage. The Yellow Army lost half their side for a paltry 29 runs on board in less than six overs. The 2021 winners need to win all their remaining games to stand any chance of qualifying for the playoffs, which looks like an improbable task at present.

On the other hand, Dhoni opined on all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja being ruled out due to injury and said, "It's tough to replace him, don't think anyone can field better, no replacement in that aspect."

CSK vs MI: EXPLAINED! Here's why both teams were deprived of DRS during first 10 balls of the contest

The El Clasico of IPL returns as the five-time champions and bottom-lying Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to lock horns with the arch-rivals MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 58 of IPL 2022 edition, on Thursday evening (May 12), at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Exactly three years back, Rohit Sharma's MI franchise had beaten Dhoni-starrer Chennai by a run in IPL 2019 final to win their fourth title. This time around, the Mumbai outfit will be desperate to return to winning ways and also end CSK's playoff hopes with a win on Thursday evening. For the unversed, MI were the first team to be out of the playoffs race and if they manage to settle scores with CSK this time around, following their close loss to the Yellow Army earlier this season, it will also end Dhoni & Co.'s hopes of progressing ahead. Hence, a lot is riding on this battle despite both sides languishing at the bottom.

Talking about both teams' form, MI won two in a row after eight successive defeats. However, they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 52 runs in their previous encounter. On the other hand, CSK have had some change of fortunes ever since Dhoni returned as their captain. Since then, they have won twice and lost one clash. In their last outing, Chennai defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by a whopping 92-run margin and will hope for another big win to bolster their NRR and keep playoff hopes alive.

Match prediction for CSK vs MI encounter: The toss at the Wankhede has always been crucial. While captains have largely preferred chasing, only thrice out of 15 games has a winning captain opted to bat first at this venue. Out of those three instances, totals have been defended twice, hence, batting first is also not a bad option here. Nonetheless, the toss will remain critical. Will MI rely on birthday boy and CSK's nemesis Kieron Pollard to upset CSK's chances? A close and moderate-scoring contest on the cards!!!

RCB's collapse to LSG's surrender: Lowest team totals in IPL 2022 so far

In the two-day IPL 2022 mega auction, Ishan Kishan made heads turn when he was sold for a whopping INR 152.5 million (INR 15.25 crore). The young wicketkeeper-batter ended as the most expensive player in this year's mega auction.

Ever since he went for a huge sum, being bought back by the Mumbai Indians (MI), many had their eyes on the swashbuckling left-hander Kishan. So far, the keeper-batter has amassed 321 runs in 11 matches, at an average of 32.10 and has struck at 117.15. While he has three fifties under his belt, the 23-year-old hasn't lived upto expectations with some sluggish knocks and blowing hot and cold so far.

Many former cricketers have felt that Ishan has taken the pressure of the price tag which, in turn, has reflected in his sluggish performances. Recently, Ishan revealed his chat with Virat Kohli, his MI skipper Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya regarding his IPL auction price tag and how to deal with it.

"When I spoke to Rohit bhai, or even to Virat Kohli bhai during the game against RCB and Hardik bhai, everyone told me the same thing ‘you don’t have to think about the price tag’ because it’s not something I have asked for. The team had belief in me, so they did spend the money," Kishan said during a media interaction on the eve of Mumbai's meeting with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), on Thursday (May 12) at IPL 2022.

"Instead of thinking about the pressure of the price tag, it’s important to think about my game and being in the zone. So talking to the senior players really helped. They have played the game for so long and handled different situations. For them also, at some point, the auction price would have gone up. So I learned how they handled the situation then," the Mumbai Indians opener added.

So far, the keeper-batter has amassed 321 runs in 11 matches, at an average of 32.10 and has struck at 117.15. While he has three fifties under his belt, the 23-year-old hasn't lived upto expectations with some sluggish knocks and blowing hot and cold so far. IPL 2022: Ishan Kishan reveals chat with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on dealing with price tag pressure

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has backed his former teammate and Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma to bounce back to form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Rohit has not been in the best of form for the five-time champions, who have struggled for consistency and are already out of the race for the playoffs this season with only two wins in eleven matches so far this season.

Mumbai Indians got off to a woeful start in the league as they lost their first eight matches in a row before managing to bring an end to their losing streak against Rajasthan Royals to bag their maiden win. They went on to defeat Gujarat Titans in their next game before slipping to another huge loss against Kolkata Knight Riders in their last game on Monday.

Rohit's poor run with the willow continued in his side's last clash against KKR as he was once again dismissed cheaply. The Hitman was adjudged out controversially in the game as he could manage only 2 runs off 6 balls. Rohit has endured a rough patch with the willow this season as he has managed to amass only 200 runs in 11 matches at a shambolic average of 18.18. The Hitman is yet to score a fifty in this edition of the tournament.

'Something big is coming': Yuvraj Singh makes bold prediction about Rohit Sharma amid poor run in IPL 2022

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) kept their playoffs hopes alive in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with a comprehensive 52-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (May 09). KKR bowled well and produced a brilliant display on the field to successfully defend the total of 165 runs and bag their fifth win of the season.

Batting first, KKR got off to a good start as openers Venkatesh Iyer (43) and Ajinkya Rahane (25) posted a 60-run stand for the first wicket. Crucial knocks from Nitish Rana (43) and Rinku Singh (23) then propelled KKR to a fighting total of 165 runs on the board.

The pacers impressed with the ball as KKR got off to a flyer while defending the total. Tim Southee got rid of MI skipper Rohit Sharma cheaply on just 2 off 6 balls before Andre Russell removes Tilak Verma (6) and Ramandeep Singh (12) to pile on the pressure on the MI batting line-up.

Kishan held one end of the crease with a gritty 51 off 43 balls but failed to find support from the other end as the likes of Tim David (13) and Kieron Pollard (15) disappointed once again. MI were bundled out for a paltry 113 runs as they lost the game by 52 runs to suffer their 9th defeat of the season.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Kolkata Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians by 52 runs

Kolkata Knight Riders finally found the team balance they were looking for to outclass Mumbai Indians by 52 runs here on Monday and keep their slim IPL play-off hopes alive. Lead Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in IPL history to restrict KKR to 165 for nine after fine knocks from Venkatesh Iyer (43 off 24) and Nitish Rana (43 off 24).

Barring a 43-ball 51 from Ishan Kishan, Mumbai batters struggled to get going in the chase as their innings ended at 113 all out in 17.3 overs. KKR finally played Tim Southee (1/10) and Pat Cummins (3/22) together and the move worked with the seasoned pacers sharing four wickets. Andre Russell too chipped in with couple of wickets.

Another big positive was the return to form of Venkatesh Iyer, who had to be dropped earlier in the competition due to his lean run after a sensational debut season in 2021. While MI were already out of the play-off race, KKR, who have five wins from 12 games, can still sneak into the top four with two games remaining.

Earlier, KKR openers Venkatesh and Ajinkya Rahane (25 off 24 balls) added 60 runs in just 5.4 overs after they were put into bat but the Shreyas Iyer-led side failed to capitalise on that promising start. Rana blazed his way to a 26-ball 43, with three boundaries and four sixes, but it was Bumrah (5/10), who took five wickets in two overs, to put the brakes on KKR, who suffered a middle-order collapse.

In the 15th over, Bumrah removed Russell (9) and Rana and then clinched three wickets -- Sheldon Jackson (5), Cummins (0) and Sunil Narine (0), in the 18th over, a maiden, to bring MI back into the game. Venkatesh smashed three boundaries and four sixes, but perished in the sixth over, giving a sitter to Daniel Sams at point, with spinner Kumar Kartikeya Singh (2/32) getting his first wicket.

Venkatesh was brutal on spinner Murugan Ashwin (1/35), hitting him for his first maximum, a pull shot and then hammered a boundary. The southpaw then walloped his second six over deep mid-wicket off Daniel Sams (1/26), as KKR raced to 26/0 after three overs. He then targeted Riley Meredith (0/35), hammering him for boundary and a six, a scoop shot, in the fifth over where KKR amassed 17 runs.

Mumbai bowlers conceded only 23 runs from overs 7-10. Kartikeya cleaned up Rahane, with a full delivery that turned in as the opener was beaten while attempting a reverse-sweep.

After Rahane's dismissal, Rana upped the ante and launched into Kartikeya, hitting him for two successive sixes, one over long-on. He then tore into Kieron Pollard, hammering two sixes and a boundary in the 13th over, where the side got 17 runs.

But then it was Bumrah, who wreaked havoc with the ball and firmly brought MI back into the contest.

Jasprit Bumrah bowls triple wicket-maiden over against KKR, bags fifer to record his best-ever figures in IPL

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma's disappointing run with the bat continued in his side's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2022 on Monday (May 09). Rohit was dismissed cheaply yet again as he was sent back on 2 after a controversial dismissal against KKR pacer Time Southee at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

Rohit was dismissed on the last ball of the first over of the Mumbai Indians' innings. Southee bowled a short of length delivery to Rohit cramping him for room. The ball had hit Rohit's thigh pad before KKR wicket-keeper Sheldon Jackon took the catch. However, Jackson was convinced Rohit had edged the ball and asked KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer to go for a review after Rohit was deemed not out by the on-field umpire.

The replays showed there was an edge when the ball passed the bat. However, there was a clear technical glitch in the ultra edge as spikes were witnessed in the replay even before the ball passed close to the bat. Nonetheless, the third umpire was quick to make his decision and adjudged Rohit out.

Rohit was left dejected in the middle as he couldn't believe what had unfolded. The Mumbai Indians skipper was sure he had not edged the ball but he was deemed out and had to leave the ground. The controversial dismissal soon sparked massive outrage on social media as fans slammed the 3rd umpire for the decision.

Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted playing XIs

Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets on Saturday to confirm Mumbai Indians' (MI) exit from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Rohit Sharma-led MI have become the first team to be knocked out of the IPL this season after a disastrous start to their campaign.

MI lost a record eight matches in a row at the start of the season - most by any team in the history of the competition which was enough to derail their campaign as they find themselves out of the race for a spot in the top four. The five-time champions still have four games in hand but cannot make it to the playoffs in any case.

Rajasthan Royals' win over Punjab Kings on Saturday means the Sanju Samson-led side now has 14 points from eleven games this season. RR are the third team after table-toppers Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants to reach the tally of 14 points which confirms MI's exit as even if Rohit & Co. manage to win their remaining four matches, they can only acquire a maximum of 12 points.

12 points won't be enough for Mumbai Indians to finish in the top four as their campaign in the league comes to a disappointing end with eight losses and just two wins in ten matches so far. The five-time champions have now missed out on a spot in the top four for two seasons in a row.

Mumbai Indians' auction strategy came back to haunt them this season as the likes of Tymal Mills, Tim David and Ishan Kishan all failed to perform up to the expectations. Kishan had a great start to the season but runs dried up as the tournament progressed.

MI's bowling attack was found wanted as Jasprit Bumrah lacked a partner in the pace attack with the like of Mills, Daniel Sams and Unadkat failing to deliver. While Sams seems to have found some much-needed confidence now, it is too late for MI to save their season.

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians become 1st team to be knocked out of IPL 2022 after RR beat PBKS

Mumbai Indians' (MI) struggles have been well documented in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. The five-time champions have managed just two wins in ten matches so far this season and are currently lying at the bottom of the table with their playoffs hopes already quashed.

While the form of their openers and their struggling bowling attack have been among the biggest concerns for MI this season, Rohit Sharma & Co. have also suffered due to the woeful form of star all-rounder Kieron Pollard. Pollard has been abysmal with both the bat and the ball failing to make an impact for his team.

The West Indies all-rounder, who has been one of MI's longest servants and has only played for the five-time champions in his IPL career so far, has not been among the runs and has bowled occasionally. In MI's last game against Gujarat Titans on Friday, Pollard managed only 4 runs off 14 balls after coming out to bat at number 5.

If not for Tim David's quickfire 44 off 21 balls, Pollard's inability to rotate the strike could have cost MI the game. David's cameo helped MI post 177 runs on the board in 20 overs and win the game by 5 runs to bag their second win of the season. Amid Pollard's poor run, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has made a bold claim on the all-rounder's future in the remainder of the season.

Chopra believes Pollard's IPL 2022 campaign is now over and that the West Indies all-rounder will not play again for Mumbai Indians this season. Chopra said Pollard can make way for young Dewald Brevis, who had impressed for MI in his first few games this season.

"Tilak Varma got run out but before that Kieron Pollard got out. That's an interesting one, I feel Kieron Pollard will not play any further this year, that's it, they won't play him anymore because Dewald Brevis is sitting outside and Tim David is doing well," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"Don't know why they didn't play a punt on Tim David earlier. They had kept this six-hitting machine sitting outside for a long time. Now they have remembered that they should play him and he has not disappointed them even once since they have played him, match-winning knocks coming at the end," he added.

In ten matches so far in IPL 2022, Pollard has only managed 129 runs at an abysmal average of 14.33 and a strike rate of just 109.32. With Mumbai Indians already out of the race for the playoffs, it remains to be seen if the five-time chamions will drop the West Indies stalwart to give a chance to others in the squad.

Amid Pollard's poor run, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has made a bold claim on the all-rounder's future in the remainder of the season. Also Read: Explained! How MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings can still qualify for IPL 2022 playoffs Chopra believes Pollard's IPL 2022 campaign is now over and that the West Indies all-rounder will not play again for Mumbai Indians this season. With Mumbai Indians already out of the race for the playoffs, it remains to be seen if the five-time chamions will drop the West Indies stalwart to give a chance to others in the squad.

Kieron Pollard will not play any further in IPL 2022: Ex-India cricketer makes bold statement on MI star

Match 51 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the table-toppers Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) face the bottom-lying Mumbai Indians (MI) at the high-scoring Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Friday evening (May 06). Desperate for another win to make for the playoffs, Hardik & Co. failed to get past the finish line -- to lose two in a row -- as the Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise pulled off a heist by five runs in defence of 177-6.

Opting to bowl first, Hardik-led GT were in for a leather hunt as MI openers Rohit (43) and Ishan (45) took the team off to a confident start. From 74 for no loss, MI struggled from there on as Rashid Khan applied pressure with his bowling and removed Rohit and Kieron Pollard. Tim David's 21-ball 44 not out propelled MI to a healthy 177 for 6. However, at the mid-innings, it felt as if the five-time winners were easily short by 15-20 runs given the kind of start they enjoyed.

In reply, Gujarat openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill took their team off to a rollicking start. Saha was the aggressor among the duo as young Gill also grew in confidence and joined the party later. Jasprit Bumrah went for quite a few in his early overs as Rohit looked a tense captain. Against the run of play, Murugan Ashwin applied the pressure with his tidy bowling and was rewarded with the scalps of Saha and Gill.

While Hardik got a start before being run-out for a 14-ball 24, Sai Sudharshan was hit-wicket for a 11-ball 14. With wickets falling in the death overs, MI clawed their way back into the contest as Bumrah bowled a good over to end his spell whereas Daniel Sams defended 9 runs off the last six balls to stun GT.

With this win, MI remain at the bottom but have suddenly found some momentum -- despite an early exit -- with back-to-back wins.

IPL 2022: Rohit Sharma hits 200th six in MI jersey, joins Virat Kohli in elite list of batters

The cricketing action will continue on Friday evening (May 06) as IPL 2022 will continue to move ahead with match 51 which will see the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) take on the Gujarat Titans (GT). Thus, it will be the clash of the table-toppers Gujarat versus the bottom-lying Mumbai franchise.

For Gujarat, everything is clicking at the moment. They have been very impressive right from the start of the season. Hardik Pandya has led well, the team management have ensured a positive environment with roles defined for all individuals, some new additions have also been handy, Shubman Gill has lost form but did well initially, Rahul Tewatia-David Miller and Rashid Khan are performing in full flow whereas Md Shami leads the pace battery. Overall, Gujarat is having a ball and will be desperate to get another win to add a 'Q' (qualified for playoffs) ahead of their name. Hardik will be eager to do well against his former franchise.

Talking about the Mumbai line-up, they are out of the IPL 2022 playoffs race. Thus, they will now look to spoil the party for the other teams and gain something out of a disappointing season. MI have lots to ponder upon as they haven't found a formula or don't even have a set template. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah will like to do a lot more to sign off the season on a high.

Interestingly, MI is coming into this game on the back of their first win, in ninth attempt, whereas Gujarat lost their last encounter.

GT vs MI, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians match?

From Umran Malik to Ayush Badoni: Young Indian stars who have taken IPL 2022 by storm

Seasoned Suryakumar Yadav and young Tilak Varma gave the best 35th birthday present to their skipper Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians finally opened their account, beating Rajasthan Royals by five wickets in an IPL match here on Saturday.

Chasing a victory target of 159, MI reached home in 19.2 overs, courtesy Surya (51 off 39 balls) and Tilak (35 off 30 balls) adding 81 for the third wicket.

It was MI's first win after eight successive defeats and even though the result bears little consequence but it is certainly going to keep the five-time champions in a good mind space.

Losing is also a kind of habit like winning, albeit a bad one, as with it self belief also goes out of the window. Rohit didn't look one bit of his cheery self when he was cutting his birthday cake and by the end of the day, a win must have felt like a healing balm.

Teams then manage to snatch defeat from jaws of victory and something of that order was happening on Saturday night before Surya and Tilak sang the redemption song with Tim David (20 not out off 9 balls) providing the finishing touch.

It was Daniel Sams who hit the winning six to send the spectators into a frenzy.

Rohit's run of poor scores continued as he tried a slog sweep off Ravichandran Ashwin (4-0-21-1) and offered an easy catch to Daryl Mitchell at square leg.

The price tag of Rs 15.25 crore is increasingly seeming like a noose around Ishan Kishan's (26 of 18 balls) neck as he started well but in desperation to over-compensate mis-timed a pull-shot.

Surya was once again smooth in his strokeplay and so was MI's most consistent player of the season Tilak, whose lofted six was a delightful watch.

The duo took its own time to first settle down, taking the team's score to 75 in first 10 overs and set an ideal platform to knock off the remaining 82 off back-10.

Since there wasn't scoreboard pressure, Surya and Tilak were able to keep the momentum going with singles and doubles while waiting for the occasional loose ball.

Surya brought up his fifty with a muscular six over wide long-on off Ashwin's last delivery off his spell.
Tilak followed suit with his second six but soon after both the batters fell going for unnecessary big shots when it wasn't the need of the hour.

From 122 for two, MI slumped to 122 for 4 with Pollard and David at the crease.
Earlier, Buttler threatened to hit six sixes in an over but managed four on the bounce in his 52-ball-67 as

Rajasthan Royals were restricted to 158 for six by Mumbai Indians in a what was a below par batting show.

Buttler wasn't in his element for the better part of the innings before launching into rookie off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen, hitting him for four consecutive sixes between the long-on to long-off arc.

He holed out in the deep in the final ball of the 16th over as MI prevented the England marauder to cause more damage at the death.

Shokeen, who had bowled flat and tight in the previous games, looked like a lamb for slaughter conceding 47 in 3 overs which included half a dozen of sixes, forcing him to come round the wicket but that was of little benefit.

In nine games so far, Buttler has already amassed 566 runs at an average which is northwards of 70 and a strike-rate of 155 plus.

But on the day, MI attack performed way better than they have in the initial games with new inductee left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya being extremely impressive in his first outing on the big stage.

The best bowler on the day for MI was Aussie pacer Riley Meredith, who had best figures of 2 for 24 in stipulated quota of four overs, cleverly mixing variety of slower deliveries during couple of spells. He gave only three runs in the 20th over.

Debutant Kartikeya (4-0-19-1) had nine dot balls, the prize wicket of rival skipper Sanju Samson, who had by then hit a couple of sixes off Shokeen and more importantly in 24 deliveries conceded just a single boundary which spoke volumes about his temperament.

IPL 2022: Updated points table after Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets

Rohit Sharma's disappointing run with the willow continued in his side Mumbai Indians' (MI) clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday. MI went on to beat RR by five wickets to bag their maiden win of the season but Rohit had another poor outing with the bat as he was dismissed cheaply in the run-chase.

Celebrating his 35th birthday, Rohit was expected to lead from the front after Mumbai Indians were handed a tricky target of 159 runs by RR at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. However, the Hitman was dismissed by R Ashwin after managing just 2 runs off 5 balls as his woeful run in the tournament continued.

With his cheap dismissal, Rohit created an unwanted record as he has now gone 17 innings without scoring a half-century for Mumbai Indians - his longest half-century drought for the five-time champions. Rohit, who joined MI in 2011, had gone 16 innings without a half-century for the team in 2018-19 but he has now endured his longest drought for the franchise having not slammed a fifty for 17 games from last year to this season.

Rohit Sharma's longest fifty drought in IPL:

22 innings in 2009-10 (Deccan Chargers)
17 innings in 2021-22 (Mumbai Indians)
16 innings in 2018-19 (Mumbai Indians)

This season has been a forgetful one for Rohit both on the personal front and as captain. Mumbai Indians endured a winless streak of a record-breaking eight matches under his captaincy this year before bringing an end to the losing streak against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

Mumbai Indians have lost the most number of matches at the start of the tournament by any team in the history of IPL. The five-time champions, however, have now gotten off the mark with their five-wicket victory over RR and will be hoping to spark a turnaround in the remainder of the season.

Rohit, who has so far managed only 155 runs in nine matches so far this season, will be looking to regain his form with the willow and help his team finish the season strongly as they are all but out of the race for the playoffs.

Rohit Sharma's longest fifty drought in IPL: 22 innings in 2009-10 (Deccan Chargers) 17 innings in 2021-22 (Mumbai Indians) 16 innings in 2018-19 (Mumbai Indians) Also Read: 'We do not interfere': CSK CEO reveals who took the decision to hand over captaincy back to MS Dhoni This season has been a forgetful one for Rohit both on the personal front and as captain.

IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma achieves unwanted record after poor show against RR

Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler has been the star for them with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and he added another major accolade to his already illustrious career.

Buttler, who scored another half century against Mumbai Indians on Saturday, broke former Rajasthan Royals skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s record of scoring most runs for the side in one season.

The record was established in 2012 when Rahane scored 560 runs in the season at an impressive average of 40. However, Buttler was able to surpass the record in just nine games as he took a huge stride forward in the race for the orange cap as he has already scored 566 runs this season.

It has been a season to remember for the England international as he has slammed three hundreds and three fifties and his performance has been a major reason behind RR’s impressive run.

Buttler currently has a solid average of 70.75 and an equally impressive strike rate of 155.07.

On Saturday, Buttler scored 67 off 52 deliveries with the help of five fours and four sixes. Although the other batsmen were not able to score more than 25, Buttler was excellent against the MI bowlers and he was the main reason why Rajasthan Royals were able to post a total above 150.

Hrithik Shokeen and Riley Meredith were the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai Indians as they took two wickets each. The five-time champions were able to produce a disciplined performance with the ball as they look for their first win of this year’s competition.

Happy Birthday Rohit Sharma: A look at five records held by the Hitman

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Hardik Pandya for his terrific captaincy in his debut stint with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and compared him to Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma. Gavaskar believes captaincy has done to Hardik what it did to Rohit when he was handed over MI's leadership responsibilities in 2013.

Since taking over as MI's skipper in 2013, Rohit has transformed into one of the best batters in the world and is also the most successful captain in the history of IPL with five titles under his belt. Gavaskar believes Hardik has also started batting with more responsibility after taking over captaincy and is likely to recreate Rohit's success as captain.

Hardik, who is leading a team in the IPL for the first time, has enjoyed a brilliant start to his captaincy stint as Gujarat Titans are currently placed on the top of the points table with 14 points from eight matches so far this season. Gujarat Titans are the only team to have lost just one game so far this season.

"What I see with Hardik is exactly what happened to Rohit Sharma when he first got the captaincy of Mumbai Indians midway through the season (in IPL 2013). Suddenly (we saw) Rohit Sharma from playing those lovely cameos of 40s, 50s, and 60s now staying right till the end and taking responsibility. His shot selections became much better (with his captaincy)," said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

Hardik has been instrumental as a batter in his side's success this season as he has notched up 305 runs in seven matches. He has also bowled when required and has four wickets to his name. Hardik has been batting up the order at no.3 for his team and has been excellent so far this season.

Gavaskar believes Pandya is on his way to repeating what Rohit had done with Mumbai Indians in 2013. The batting legend hailed Hardik's shot selection and believes Gujarat Titans are certain to do well this season under the star all-rounder's captaincy.

"Similarly, you can see that happening with Hardik, his shot selection is absolutely terrific. Of course, he`s an outstanding fielder and (that was the case with) Rohit Sharma, he was a brilliant fielder in the covers and close-in as well (in those days). So Pandya is showing those qualities too and that`s why Gujarat Titans are doing so well," Gavaskar added.
