Mumbai Indians (MI) have had the worst possible start to their campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after six straight defeats in their first six matches this season. The Rohit Sharma-led side is currently reeling at the bottom of the points table yet to register their first points this season.

Mumbai Indians' bowling attack has been their biggest concern so far this season as Jasprit Bumrah has lacked a quality partner with the new ball and in the death overs. MI's domestic pacers lack experience while the overseas ones have been taken to the cleaners by most teams so far this season.

MI also lack a wicket-taking spinner who can trouble opposition teams in the middle-overs as Murugan Ashwin has failed to live up to the expectations as the lone spinner in the line-up. MI are reportedly planning to bolster their bowling attack and are set to sign Indian pacer Dhawal Kulkarni for the remainder of the IPL 2022 season.

Kulkarni, who is an experienced campaigner in the IPL, was part of the mega auction in February this year but had gone unsold as no teams showed interest in securing his services for the ongoing season. However, MI skipper Rohit feels Kulkarni, who hails from Maharashtra can prove to be useful in home conditions.

Kulkarni had joined IPL's Hindi commentary team after going unsold and is currently on commentary duties during the season. However, as per a report in the Times of India, he is likely to join Mumbai Indians by the end of April.

"MI skipper Rohit Sharma was keen on adding Kulkarni to strengthen their pace attack. Being from Mumbai, he's aware of how to bowl in Mumbai and Pune, where IPL-15 is being held," a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Kulkarni had started his IPL career with Mumbai Indians back in 2008 and was with the five-time champions till 2013. He then moved to Rajasthan Royals where he played till 2015 before joining the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in the 2016 season.

Kulkarni was bought back by RR in IPL 2018 and spent two seasons with the side before joining Mumbai Indians for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The right-arm pacer has so far played 92 matches in his IPL career and has 86 wickets to his name. It remains to be seen if MI will officially make a move for him this year.

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was keenly awaited. The excitement for each year's edition knows no boundaries. This time around, it went a level up as the ardent cricket fans welcomed the two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the cash-rich league.

The BCCI decided to expand the league by adding two more teams with an aim to give more opportunities to youngsters, some big names who often got sidelined and fans plenty more to cheer for. While a nervy start was expected from both Gujarat and Lucknow in IPL 2022, the two teams have taken the 15th season by storm and have announced their arrivals with a bang. Both GT and LSG have been the giant killers of IPL 2022, surpassing some big teams and surprising many without breaking much sweat.

1) Team compositions

Complete squad of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Abhinav Sadarangani, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Noor Ahmad, R Sai Kishore, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, Varun Aaron, Rahul Tewatia, Dominic Drakes, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar, Darshan Nalkande, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sai Sudarshan

Complete squad of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022

KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock (wk), Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav

Looking at both squads, it is safe to say that the newbies didn't get bogged down in the two-day mega auction, held in mid-February. They came with a clear plan: to fill their squads with multi-dimensional players, seasoned bowlers, a mix of domestic talents and foreign players. Their smart team composition is helping them reap rewards in the IPL 2022 edition so far.

2) Newness, fresh minds, new captains

Starting from scratch often helps, especially if it is going the distance in a big-ticket T20 tournament like the IPL. Both Gujarat and Lucknow have benefitted from a fresh and positive dressing room environment created since the beginning of the 15th season. With the leadership group being expanded in Team India, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have also put their best foot forward to showcase their credentials as GT and LSG skippers, respectively.

Meanwhile, the inclusions of Ashish Nehra, Gary Kirsten (for Gujarat) and Gautam Gambhir, Andy Bichel, Andy Flower (for Lucknow) in the coaching setup have led to role clarity for players, keeping things simple, sticking to basics, resorting to smart and tactical matchups. The presence of such stalwarts have given enough cushion to both the young captains and their respective players.

3) Playing fearlessly, without any past baggage

Both Lucknow and Gujarat have expressed themselves freely on the field, having no past baggage. While it helped both sides to settle their nerves by locking horns with each other on debut, they have only grown from strength to strength from thereon. In addition, the two teams have gained immensely with the repeated failures of two of the most successful IPL teams; i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

In IPL 2016, the then debutant and now-defunct Gujarat Lions (GL) had topped the points table and reached Qualifiers 2. In IPL 2017, Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS), in their second season, had qualified for the final and lost the coveted title by a run (to MI). While Gujarat (under a totally different owner) and Lucknow both have started well in their first-ever IPL season, the duo are here for the long run and not just to fill in for a few seasons. Thus, they will hope to go the distance courtesy the strong foundation laid down and build something special for themselves in the IPL, where the eight original franchises have already carved out their own space and identity.

For now, it is just the start. But the start surely has been promising. Let's see what else is in store for the two newbies as they strive hard to gain prominence, value and recognition in the cash-rich league.

How newbies Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants have been the giant-killers in IPL 2022

Mumbai Indians (MI) star Suryakumar Yadav recently recalled how skipper Rohit Sharma kept pushing him and motivating him to keep going after his goals when he was not being considered for selection in the Indian team despite his stellar performances in the domestic circuit.

Suryakumar was notching up runs consistently in domestic cricket and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a number of years. However, he earned the much-deserved recognition only after being roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of IPL 2018. Suryakumar became a vital cog in the middle order for MI and has since been one of the most consistent performers for the franchise.

He played an instrumental role in MI's title triumphs in the 2019 and 2020 seasons following which he earned his maiden India call up last year. Rewarded for his consistency with the bat, Suryakumar went on to don India's jersey for the first time in the home series against England and has since become a permanent member in the limited-overs sides.

Recalling the difficult phase before earning his maiden India call up last year, Suryakumar revealed how Rohit always had his back and kept telling him to keep knocking at the selectors' door. The Mumbai Indians skipper also advised the star batter to break the door with performances if it doesn't open.

Suryakumar has now played 14 T20Is and 7 ODIs for India amassing 351 and 267 runs in the two formats respectively. He was part of India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 last year and is expected to retain his spot in the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia this year.

'Break the door if it doesn't open': Suryakumar Yadav recalls What Rohit Sharma told him before India call up

Suryakumar Yadav is now not only one of Mumbai Indians' (MI) most vital players, he has also become an indispensable part of Team India's white-ball sides. SKY had a turnaround ever since he moved back to the MI camp in IPL 2018. From IPL 2018-2020, he was among runs and finally got his chance to make an India debut in early 2021.

Since then, it has been no looking back for the highly-talented SKY. However, he had to see several rejections and also had an epic stare-off with Virat Kohli during MI's face-off versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2020's business end. With both sides squaring off once again in the league stage, on October 28 at Abu Dhabi, SKY's impressive 43-ball 79* propelled MI to an easy five-wicket win over RCB in pursuit of a modest 165.

During SKY's stay in the middle, he was toying with the RCB bowlers with ease and finding the gaps at regular intervals. In order to get into his skin and dent his concentration, senior pro and then RCB captain Kohli stormed towards SKY as the two had an intense stare-off in between overs.

In an episode on Breakfast With Champions, SKY recalled the whole episode with then India captain Kohli while speaking with host Gaurav Kapur.

"He (Kohli) has a unique style, his energy is of a different level on the ground. That game was so important for both the teams. His sledging was on another level in that match. And I was focused that come what may, I have to win the match for the team, without speaking anything," the stylish right-handed batsman said.

"I was dead scared inside as he walked towards me, both of us were eating chewing gums. There was a voice from inside that was telling me - come what may, you don't have to utter a word, it's a matter of 10 seconds, the next over will begin. My bat fell that time, that helped me, I did not see him till the time the match was over. I was looking down and batting and we have not even discussed the incident ever outside the pitch," he added.

In IPL 2022, MI and RCB have locked horns with each other once so far. Faf du Plessis-led RCB thrashed Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai by seven wickets in chase of 152, despite SKY's belligerent 37-ball 68.

I was dead scared inside: Suryakumar Yadav recalls epic stare-off with Virat Kohli in IPL 2020

Mumbai Indians (MI) lost their sixth game in a row in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (April 16) after an 18-run defeat at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Mumbai Indians faltered once again in a run chase as they failed to successfully nail down the target of 200 runs at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

KL Rahul slammed his first hundred of the season as he notched up a brilliant unbeaten 103 off 60 balls to power Lucknow Super Giants to a big total of 199 runs on the board. MI bowlers continued to struggle and none of them barring Jaydev Unadkat and Jasprit Bumrah managed to make an impact in the game.

Skipper Rohit Sharma's rough patch continued as he was dismissed cheaply for 6 while his opening partner Ishan Kishan was sent packing on just 13 off 17 balls as MI got off to a woeful start. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were restricted on 181/9 as LSG won the game comfortably.

It was Mumbai's sixth defeat in a row this season - their worst start to a season. MI also joined RCB and Delhi Capitals as they equalled the unwanted record of losing most matches in a row at the start of the season. No team has lost more than six games at the start of an IPL season.

Reacting to his team's sixth defeat in IPL 2022, skipper Rohit said the lack of big partnerships saw Mumbai fail to pull off the run chase. He also explained the reason behind not giving Jasprit Bumrah the first over for MI and spoke about the team combination that MI is yet to finalise this season.

"Hard to point out one particular situation, when you are chasing a total we need big partnerships, something we failed to do today," said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

"There's no particular reason to it, we try and put team before the individual. They bat quite deep and it is important to hold your key bowlers towards the back end. We always try and keep Bumrah for the back end and it didn't seem to work out. He bowled pretty well but the others just need to pull up their socks a little bit," he added speaking about the move to hold back Bumrah.

While Mumbai Indians are yet to win their first game this season, Rohit himself has been struggling with the bat. He is yet to find his rhythm at the top and has not managed to get going for the five-time champions. The Hitman said he takes full responsibility of not being able to provide good starts for his team and hopes MI can fight back.

"I'm trying to prepare myself in the way I prepare for every game, that is no different. It's not coming off, I take the full responsibility of not putting the team in the situation of what they expect from me. I back myself to go out there and enjoy the game and doing what I have been doing all these years. It's important to keep looking forward. It's not the end of the world, we have come back before and we will try and come back again," said Rohit.

Also Read: Dinesh Karthik responds after fan's 'Drove 1000 kms for you RCB' banner goes viral during DC clash Reacting to his team's sixth defeat in IPL 2022, skipper Rohit said the lack of big partnerships saw Mumbai fail to pull off the run chase.

'I take full responsibility': Rohit Sharma reacts to Mumbai Indians' 6th straight defeat in IPL 2022

Mumbai Indians suffered their sixth consecutive defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they were beaten by Lucknow Super Giants by eighteen runs in Mumbai on Saturday.

This is currently the worst start to an IPL season for the Rohit Sharma-led side with the previous record being five straight losses in 2014. However, in 2014, MI were able to stage a brilliant comeback from that precarious position to reach the playoff stages of the T20 competition.

MI also became the third team in the history of the tournament to lose their first six encounters.

Delhi Capitals (2013) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2019) had previously achieved a similar unwanted feat in the competition but both the sides were able to win the seventh game of their respective seasons.

As a result, another loss for Mumbai Indians will mean that they will be the first team in IPL to lose their first seven matches and Rohit & Co will be desperate to avoid that embarrassing situation.

Next up, Mumbai Indians will take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings on Thursday.

Mumbai Indians slump to sixth consecutive loss in IPL 2022 against Lucknow Super Giants

Former Indian cricket team skipper believes that Mumbai Indians should give chances to players like Tim David and Arjun Tendulkar in order to break the pattern of their performance as the five-time champions slumped to their sixth loss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday.

“You have to try some new players, like you can give a chance to Arjun as well, who has been doing well, maybe Tendulkar name on the field can bring them good luck. If you have picked David for such a high price, and if he is not playing, there is no use of him being in the squad. If you have players, you just can’t make them sit along, that will be injustice to the player as well.

“If the things are not happening, they can try different players, as most of the teams have not played them, and the team can succeed,” said Azharuddin on ‘Not Just Cricket Show’ on CricTracker.

David was a costly buy for the Mumbai Indians picked him for INR 82.5 million while Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun was picked for INR 3 million.

When asked about the problems with the current playing XI, Azharuddin pointed out that the lack of a quality bowler alongside Jasprit Bumrah has been a major concern for MI. Jofra Archer was ruled out of this year’s tournament due to injury and his absence has created a number of problems.

“They have packed their batting, but have left a void in the bowling unit. They are over-dependent on Bumrah, but you cannot put so much pressure on him, he is also a human. Sometimes he can go for runs as well. They can try him in the 1st over itself, because if he comes in the 2nd or 3rd over, the batters have settled down a bit and can go for maybe 20 off two overs, and it can have a big impact,” Azharuddin asserted.

IPL 2022: 'He may bring some good luck' - Former India skipper urges MI to play Arjun Tendulkar

Skipper KL Rahul led from the front with a captain's knock as he powered Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a comfortable 18-run win against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 16). Rahul notched up his first century of the season as he played a terrific knock of unbeaten 103 runs off 60 balls to help his side post a big total of 199 runs on the board.

Asked to bat first, Rahul finally managed to find his rhythm this season as he got LSG off to a flyer. The stylish right-hander combined with his opening partner Quinton de Kock (24) to add 52 runs for the first wicket before posting another brilliant stand of 66 runs for the second wicket with Manish Pandey who played a crucial knock of 38 runs.

Rahul stayed unbeaten till the end and took Lucknow Super Giants closer to the 200-run mark. His 60-ball 103 was laced with nine fours and five sixes as the LSG skipper bounced back in style after being dismissed for a duck in his side's last outing against Rajasthan Royals.

After posting a strong total on the board, Lucknow Super Giants bowlers were right on the money as they managed to restrict a struggling Mumbai Indians batting line-up on 181/9 in 20 overs.

Skipper Rohit Sharma's lean patch continued as he was dismissed cheaply on 6 off 7 balls by Avesh Khan in the 3rd over of MI's run chase. Dewald Brevis then played some sensational stroked en route to his quickfire 31 off 13 balls and added 31 runs for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan before the duo was dismissed in quick succession.

Suryakumar Yadav was MI's biggest hope after the top-order faltered but he could only manage 37 off 27 balls and was well supported by Tilak Varma, who scored 25 off 14 balls to add 64 runs for the third wicket. However, MI's innings was derailed after the duo's dismissal as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and fell short by 18 runs in the run chase.

Avesh Khan continued his impressive run with the ball for Lucknow Super Giants and bowled an exceptional spell of 3/30 off his four overs. The likes of Jason Holder, Dushmantha Chameera, Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis all picked up a wicket apiece as Mumbai Indians were handed their sixth defeat in a row.

Mumbai Indians are yet to bag their first win this season as they have now lost as many as six matches in a row and are virtually out of the race for the playoffs with ten teams in contention. This is the first time in IPL history that MI have lost six games in a row at the start of the season - which is the joint-most by any team. Legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn is one of the best fast bowlers to have played the game. Steyn was one of the deadliest pacers in his prime and troubled the best of batters with his pace and precision. He is South Africa's all-time leading wicket-taker in Tests with 439 wickets to his name and is one of the most successful fast bowlers of all time.

Several current fast bowlers have often earned comparisons with Steyn for their heroics in the game at present. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is one of the best in the business at the moment, was recently compared to Steyn by a fan on Twitter. Responding to Steyn's latest tweet, a fan called Bumrah a better bowler than the South African legend.

Steyn was quick to reply to the fan and came up with a fitting response. "I'm sure he is, I’m retired," the South African legend wrote. Steyn retired from all forms of cricket in 2021. He had parted ways from Test cricket back in 2019 and was part of South Africa's squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup but ended up missing the tournament due to an injury.

It has been a horrible start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) season for both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. The two franchises, who have won a combined nine IPL titles, are sitting at the bottom of the points table at the moment with MI not registering a single win till now.

Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra said on Thursday that both teams are suffering due to weak bowling attacks and he believes that the heavyweight sides will not reach the playoffs.

"Both CSK and MI have ordinary bowling attacks. Although they have come back from a similar situation, if you keep on playing the same team hoping something suddenly will change then that's not possible. MI will need to change their XI while CSK bowling needs to click. But I don't see them going through," Chopra said on his YouTube channel while speaking about their playoff chances.

Chennai Super Kings were on a four-match losing run but they were able to register their win of the tournament as they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in a high-scoring encounter. Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa were the stars with the bat as CSK were post a mammoth total.

IPL 2022: Former India opener has his say on Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians' playoff chances

It has been a disastrous Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Mumbai Indians. The five-time winners of the competition went into the mega auction with a strategy that surprised a number of people and came out with a completely new-look side with a few old players in the mix.

The loss of key players like Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult and Quinton de Kock was already a place of concern for the side but the inability of the existing players to step up the challenge has resulted in Rohit Sharma & Co losing all five of their opening matches in the ongoing season of the competition.

On Wednesday, Mumbai Indians were able to produce a number of good performances with the bat against Punjab Kings but they once again fell short and ultimately slumped to their fifth defeat.

This was the second time in the history of the competition that Mumbai Indians lost their first five matches in a row with the first instance taking place in 2014. Apart from Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered this fate in 2019, Delhi Capitals in 2013 and Deccan Chargers in 2012.

However, there is a bit of solace for the Mumbai Indians as they were able to turn their season around in 2014 despite losing the first five games. They came back with a strong show towards the latter half of the season and were even able to qualify for the play-off stages of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians register unwanted record with five consecutive losses in IPL 2022

Mumbai Indians inched closer towards elimination after setting themselves up for their first win, only to slump to their fifth defeat on the trot as Punjab Kings won a high-scoring IPL thriller by 12 runs here on Wednesday.

A target of 199 looked imminently chaseable when teenagers Dewald Brevis (49 off 25 balls) and NT Tilak Varma (36 off 20 balls) were at the crease but Punjab bowlers did well enough to restrict MI to 186 for nine at the end of 20 overs.

Odean Smith (4/30 in 4 overs) redeemed himself after the horror last two balls against Gujarat Titans as he got two wickets in the final over for Punjab. For Mumbai, eight wins in nine games with this kind of bowling attack looks near impossible.

However, if there was one positive, it was Brevis's batting. It took eight balls before Brevis could get going as he unleashed a cover drive and a straight drive off Arshdeep Singh to tee off. A pulled six off Smith settled his nerves before he decided to wreak havoc with India international Rahul Chahar's nerve.

A boundary was followed by four huge sixes as Chahar first lost length and then his bearings as one long hop after another was deposited into the stands. The Baby AB's transformation from boy to a man happened with that 29-run over which showed that MI had made a 10-year investment.

He was finally out one short of his maiden IPL fifty but not before leaving everyone yearning for more. At the other end was Tilak, who had already made an impression, showed great game sense by letting Brevis do the heavy lifting before he himself hit some marvellous sixes including an audacious slash over point off Smith.

The duo added 84 runs in just 6.5 overs to turn the match head on before their successive dismissals did again bring Punjab back as fortunes swung like a pendulum. Suryakumar Yadav (43 off 30 balls) wasn't in best rhythm and Kieron Pollard (10, 11 balls) season just got from bad to worse.

Finally, it was Surya, who took matters in his own hands with a six over extra cover off Vaibhav Arora and then opened the face to slash it over backward point for a six as 33 were required off last three overs. However, it was Kagiso Rabada, who removed Surya in the 19th over, caught by Smith in the deep after which there wasn't much resistance left from MI.

Earlier, skipper Mayank Agarwal and veteran Shikhar Dhawan struck their first half-centuries of the season as Punjab Kings rode on a fine start from the openers to post a challenging 198 for five.

Punjab Kings have deployed "attack is the best form of defence" philosophy during this edition of the league and there was no shift in policy as they added 97 in less than 10 overs to provide a perfect launchpad but Jasprit Bumrah's (1/28 in 4 overs) brilliance kept the score below 200.

Bumrah's toe-crusher which yorked the dangerous Liam Livingstone helped MI to keep things under check with 99 runs coming off the last 10 overs.

Agarwal, who wasn't having a great run before this game, brought his customary square off the wicket shots on the off-side and straight lofts of spinners to score 52 off 32 balls. Dhawan took his own time while playing the second fiddle but still kept up the tempo letting Agarwal go for the whole hog during their stand. But he did accelerate after that before getting out for 70 off 50 balls.

It was Mumbai's domestic bowlers like Basil Thampi (2/47 in 4 overs) and Murugan Ashwin (1/34 in 4 overs), who aren't measuring up match after match but skipper Rohit Sharma is helpless due the lack of options.

Despite knowing Agarwal's propensity to make room and smash through off-side, he was fed with length balls outside the off-stump by Thampi and Tymal Mills. When they bowled short, the pace was used to good effect.

In the case of Ashwin, the PBKS skipper would come down the track to loft him straight but he did get his man when Agarwal went for one shot too many.

Dhawan went onto his 45th IPL half-ton but the shot that showed his authority was a disdainful slog sweep off a 137 click delivery from Thampi.

Thampi did got his revenge by getting Dhawan holed in the deep before rookie Jitesh Sharma (30 no off 15 balls) smashed 23 off Jaydev Unadkat (1/44 in 4 overs) in the 18th over to get the momentum back which had slipped after a few dismissals.

IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians' losing streak continues as Punjab Kings beat Rohit Sharma & Co. by 12 runs

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes Rohit Sharma should have given up captaincy for Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Rohit, who is the most successful captain in the history of the Indian Premier League, has led Mumbai Indians to five titles over the years but his form with the bat has been concerning over the last couple of seasons.

Rohit hasn't managed to fire with the bat for the five-time champions in the last couple of seasons and his poor patch has continued in the ongoing IPL 2022. As the Hitman struggles to attain consistency for his team, Manjrekar explained why leaving captaincy could have helped him perform better as a batter.

Manjrekar named Pollard as Rohit's replacement as captain and said the West Indies all-rounder still brings a lot of value to the table for MI. Pollard has played for Mumbai Indians throughout his IPL career and was one of the players to be retained by the franchise ahead of IPL 2022.

Though he hasn't quite managed to set the stage on fire with his performances this season, Manjrekar believes he needs just one game to find his mojo. Manjrekar said Rohit should have stepped down from captaincy like Virat Kohli did with RCB and should have handed over the baton to Pollard.

“I feel Pollard still adds value. [Before the season] I even felt Rohit Sharma might leave captaincy like Virat Kohli, relax a bit, play as a pure batter and hand the responsibility to Pollard who is a brilliant international captain,” Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

“Pollard still has the capability, I can see that from the sixes he hits. He’ll contribute in the pressure match, the crunch game. But they need to reach there first and that’s not on Pollard, it never has been. He’s never contributed throughout the season for Mumbai Indians. He plays one innings in a pressure game and sees the team through. Others need to work better because Pollard is doing his usual job,” he added.

After replacing Kohli as India's T20I captain last year, Rohit also took over from the batting maestro as the new captain of the national team across all three formats this year. While Rohit has been enjoying a purple patch for the Indian team in international cricket, his form has been under the scanner for MI in the IPL.

Manjrekar believes the burden of captaincy at Mumbai Indians has forced the Hitman to play the anchor's role while curbing his natural instincts. The former India cricketer pointed out how Rohit plays freely for the national team and said if he plays freely, people will get to see a different Rohit at Mumbai Indians.

“His record has been like this for the last 3-4 seasons, average less than 30, strike-rate not 150 or 160. When he plays for India his numbers get better… because then he only thinks about himself and less about the team. When playing IPL, he tries to play the anchor role similar to what KL Rahul did with Punjab Kings and Hardik Pandya did in the last matc. If he plays freely, we’ll see the Rohit Sharma we see in Indian cricket,” Manjrekar added.

Sanjay Manjrekar explains why Rohit Sharma should have left captaincy before IPL 2022, names his replacement

Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a forgetful start to their campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they currently sit at the bottom of the table with zero points from their first four matches so far this season. Mumbai Indians have suffered four defeats in a row and will be desperately looking to bag their first win of the season when they take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Wednesday.

Mumbai Indians are no strangers to enduring a poor start to a season and have managed to win an IPL title despite losing the first four matches at the start of the season. However, their squad lacks balance this season and their performances have been below par with both the bat and the ball.

Barring the impressive performances from the likes of Ishan Kishan and young Tilak Varma, Mumbai Indians have had no positives from their first four defeats this season. Their batters have failed to fire as a unit and their bowling attack has struggled massively after the departure of the likes of Trent Boult and Rahul Chahar among others.

In their last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, MI played only two overseas players - Dewald Brevis and Kieron Pollard in their XI as the likes of Tim David, Daniel Sams and Tymal Mills have failed to impress for the five-time champions. However, David and Mills are expected to be included in the XI for the clash against Punjab Kings.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, have had a decent start to their campaign under new captain Mayank Agarwal. They have two wins and two losses in their first four games of the season and have played an aggressive brand of cricket. While Liam Livingstone's form is a huge positive for PBKS, Jonny Bairstow's return has further strengthened their star-studded batting line-up.

MI vs PBKS, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings clash?

Mumbai Indians (MI) are the most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with five titles under their belt. After missing out on a spot in the playoffs last year, MI were expected to get off to a flying start in their campaign in the ongoing IPL 2022 to ensure they can finish in the top four this year.

However, Mumbai Indians have had a woeful start to their campaign as they find themselves sitting in the bottom half of the points table after four straight losses in their first four matches. Mumbai Indians have so far suffered back-to-back defeats against Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing season.

MI had to let go of a number of their superstars ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction this year as the likes of Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Quinton de Kock and Trent Boult all parted ways with the franchise. They brought some fresh talent at the auction but have failed to strike a balance in their playing XI so far this season.

Speaking about his team's struggles, Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah said the franchise is currently in the phase of transition and the players are still getting used to the pressure of the tournament.

"Every team goes through a transition phase. We've had a big auction and two new teams have come, so a lot of our old players have also gone in different teams. It's a transition phase that every cricketer understands, and every team goes through that," said Bumrah in the pre-match press conference ahead of MI's clash against Punjab Kings on Wednesday.

"We are in that phase; we've got a new group. We've got some old core group, something of them, as well, but a lot of new guys who are understanding the team, understanding the franchise, understanding how the scenarios work. A lot of new young players, and upcoming talent, in our team as well.

"So understanding the format of the IPL, how you have to handle pressure and achieve success in this league. We are going through that. We enjoy that. Every player has gone through that, so we are looking forward that we go through this transition, and then we reach and then we have all the players we had and the quality will come back again," he added.

When asked how can Mumbai Indians spark a turnaround this season after losing four matches in a row, Bumrah said he would first like the team to win the toss to start with and then focus on the result of the matches. The Indian pacer explained how toss can play a crucial role for teams considering how dew has been a factor in deciding games this year.

"If it was up to me, I would say win the toss. That really helps. But yes, whenever you come into this scenario, there is a little bit of help with the new ball, so maintaining a good line, trying to swing the ball up front, I think will help you," said Bumrah.

This is not the first time Mumbai Indians have struggled at the start of the season as the Rohit Sharma-led side has made it to the playoffs even after losing five games in a row at the start of the season. However, MI will have to bounce back quickly as they are yet to bag their first points this season.

'I would say win the toss': Jasprit Bumrah on how Mumbai Indians can spark a turnaround in IPL 2022

There is no shortage of cricketing action amid the IPL 2022 edition. In match 18, the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Saturday evening (April 09).

While the contest proved to be a dull affair, the match made heads turn when a fan ended up breaching the security and stormed into the middle to meet Virat Kohli and MI skipper Rohit Sharma. At that time, Kohli-starrer were involved in their modest 152-run chase after having asked MI to bat first.

The fan first ran towards Kohli and reached a fist pump as the latter was wearing his batting gloves. On the other hand, he then went towards Rohit, who was stationed at short covers. The Mumbai captain didn't come in contact with the fan, due to Covid-19 guidelines and bio-bubble restrictions, but gave him a virtual hug. Here's the video:

IPL 2022: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma react as a fan storms in the middle during MI-RCB tie - WATCH

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) continued their winning run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday as they secured a comfortable seven-wicket win against five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MCA Stadium in Pune. RCB comfortably chased down the target of 152 runs with nine balls to spare to bag their third win in four matches this season.

While young opener Anuj Rawat impressed with his cracking 66 off 47 balls laced with six sixes and two fours, superstar batter Virat Kohli also played a brilliant knock of 48 runs for his team. Kohli looked in fine form as he anchored the run-chase to perfection with Rawat playing aggressively on the other end after skipper Faf du Plessis' dismissal.

However, Kohli's stay in the middle was cut short by South Africa U-19 star Dewald Brevis, who has been labelled as 'Baby AB' by many over similarities in his and the legendary AB de Villiers' batting style. While Brewis could only score 8 off 11 balls with the bat during MI's innings, he dismissed Kohli off the very first ball of his first over in IPL.

Brevis trapped Kohli lbw in the 19th over to deny the RCB star a half-century. On-field umpire K. N. Ananthapadmanabhan adjudged Kohli out but the RCB batter reviewed the decision. However, much to his disappointment even the third umpire failed to find any conclusive evidence to overturn the decision despite replays suggesting that the ball might have hit the bat and the pad at the same time.

Kohli was left fuming after the controversial call went against him and he was sent packing by the 18-year-old South African prodigy, who has been backed by many to have a great future in the IPL. Kohli was seen smashing his bat on the ground in frustration as he walked out of the ground after his dismissal.

IPL 2022: Former India all-rounder points out 'major headache' for struggling Mumbai Indians

Royal Challengers Bangalore were able to continue their fine run of form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with a comfortable win over Mumbai Indians but the occasion was without controversy as the dismissal of Virat Kohli created a debate among the experts and fans alike.

Kohli, who was batting at 48, seemed all set to finish the game for RCB but was dismissed by Dewald Brevis. The ball crashed into his pads and the umpire was confident that he was out but Kohli challenged the decision as he was confident that the ball has hit his bat before the pads.

The replay showed the ball made contact with the bat and pads at roughly the same time and the third umpire went with the on-field umpire’s decision.

Kohli was visibly upset at the decision and after the game, the RCB twitter handle shared the MCC official rule regarding the situation.

According to the tweet, the rule states that a batsman should be adjudged not out in case the ball hits the bat and pads at the same time. It had a picture of Kohli as he was walking out of the ground.

Also read | Sri Lanka likely to lose hosting rights for Asia Cup due to economic crisis The replay showed the ball made contact with the bat and pads at roughly the same time and the third umpire went with the on-field umpire’s decision. IPL 2022: Royal Challengers Bangalore share MCC law after Virat Kohli's controversial dismissal

Mumbai Indians' season of woes just got a tad worse after the five-time champions followed another high-profile team Chennai Super Kings to lose their fourth match on the bounce as Royal Challengers Bangalore cantered to an easy seven-wicket win in an IPL match on Saturday.

It was Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 68 that gave Mumbai Indians a respectable total of 151 for 6 but that was never going to be enough as young Anuj Rawat (66 off 47 balls) struck his maiden IPL fifty, anchoring the team to the target in just 18.3 overs.

He had two fifty plus partnerships -- 50 for opening stand with skipper Faf du Plessis (16) and 80 with former skipper and his West Delhi Cricket Academy senior Virat Kohli (48 off 36 balls) for the second wicket to seal the issue.

Rawat scored at a decent strike-rate if not rollicking one and had two fours and six maximums in his kitty.

Mumbai Indians are currently last in the table of 10 teams because of inferior net run-rate compared to CSK but the road towards redemption is becoming difficult with every passing match.

Whether it is skipper Rohit's lean patch or a poor sentimental call by the MI management to retain a non-performing asset like Kieron Pollard for one season too many, there are too many loopholes that needs plugging.

The next set of young batters are getting ready but the current attack with Murugan Ashwin, Basil Thampi and Jaydev Unadkat bowling at least 12 out of 20 overs, doesn't give the confidence that it can actually become a side in contention for a silverware.

If MI is in a mess, it is because of the decisions taken before and during the auction. Retaining Pollard and letting all-rounder Hardik Pandya go is coming back to haunt them. So is the decision to not bid aggressively for the likes of Krunal Pandya or Trent Boult or for that matter Rahul Chahar.

Earlier, Rohit and Ishan Kishan's flamboyant start was followed by an inexplicable batting collapse before the indomitable Suryakumar gave MI's total semblance of respectability.

For RCB, Harshal Patel (2/23 in 4 overs) was brilliant with his variations as most of the MI batters had no idea about his slower deliveries, which were primarily off-cutters with occasional loopy block-hole balls that drifted.

MI were 50 for no loss after Powerplay but in the next four overs lost as many as five wickets to become 62 for five and subsequently 79 for six before Suryakumar (5x4, 6x6) with his 15th IPL fifty, took them to a decent total.

Suryakumar took charge with MI tottering at 79 for 6 and added 72 off 41 balls with Jaydev Unadkat (13 no off 14 balls).

For Rohit (26 off 15 balls), this IPL so far has been about playing some breathtaking shots but not getting a big score as he raced to 26 before Harshal's slow off-cutter did the trick.

The Indian skipper after having hit four fours and a pulled six couldn't check his stroke with the bowler taking a smart return catch.

Playing the second fiddle, Kishan's (26 off 28 balls) attempt to use the pace of Bengal speedster Akash Deep in his bid to play the ramp shot became his undoing as he was caught in the third man region.

Dewald Brevis (8 off 11 balls) found it difficult to negotiate the wrist spin of Wanindu Hasaranga (2/28 in 4 overs) and was rapped on the back-pad.

Tilak Verma had his first real failure due to miscommunication with Pollard which resulted in a run-out and the big West Indian then got fooled by a Hasaranga googly.

Rookie Ramandeep Singh then dangled his bat at a wide slower from Harshal to end his 12-ball stay. Harshal cleverly changed his arm speed regularly which deceived the batters as the balls started drifting.

A slog swept six over deep mid-wicket off Hasaranga and a near 100-metre slog flick off Mohammed Siraj (4-0-51-0) were absolute treat for the eyes as Suryakumar followed it up with a ramped six as 23 came off the penultimate over.

IPL 2022: Glenn Maxwell pulls off sensational run out to dismiss N Tilak Verma during RCB vs MI clash - WATCH

Mumbai Indians (MI) will be desperately looking to bring an end to their losing streak in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 when they take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Sunday. MI are winless so far in the ongoing season with three straight defeats in their first three games.

Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore have had a contrasting start to their respective campaigns. While MI are winless so far this season, RCB have won two of their first three matches and are placed at the fifth spot on the points table with four points.

In their last game against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians came close to securing their first win of the season before a sensational knock from Pat Cummins saw them lose their third game in a row. Cummins slammed 56 off 15 balls as KKR chased down 162 runs with as many as four overs to spare against MI.

Mumbai Indians' bowling attack has struggled so far this season as the lack of a quality partner for Jasprit Bumrah in the pace attack and a wicket-taking spinner has hurt MI's chances. Their batting too has been underwhelming barring the forms of youngsters Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, who have been exceptional so far.

RCB will be boosted to have Glenn Maxwell back in the fray as the Australian star all-rounder can take down any bowling attack on his day and will be raring to go against a misfiring MI attack. Maxwell is likely to replace Sherfane Rutherford in the playing XI with Dinesh Karthik and Shahbaz Ahmed playing the finisher's role for RCB.

RCB have made a good start to the season and will be hoping for a good show from the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga and Harsahl Patel once again on Saturday. The duo has been consistent with the ball so far this season and has been among the wickets for the Faf du Plessis-led side.

MI vs RCB, IPL 2022 prediction:

Mumbai Indians had ended their losing streak against RCB after losing their first four matches in a row in 2015 and went on to win the title. Rohit Sharma & Co. might have had a similar start this year and can very well spark a turnaround against RCB once again. MI are likely to come out on top of RCB at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Saturday.

IPL 2022: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Mumbai Indians - Head-to-head record, trivia, stats and squads

Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal recently made a shocking revelation about being bullied by a teammate during his stint with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013. Chahal had made his IPL debut for the Rohit Sharma-led side back in 2013. The leg-spinner revealed he faced a near-death experience during a team geat-together.

Recalling the horrific incident, Chahal revealed a Mumbai Indians teammate dangled him from the balcony on the 15th floor after "getting drunk". Chahal opened up about the incident during a freewheeling chat with his current Rajasthan Royals and India teammate R Ashwin in a video on his YouTube channel.

Reacting to Chahal's shocking revelations, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has demanded strict action against the offender. Shastri said there was 'no laughing matter at all' in what Chahal revealed and that such a person should be sent to rehab, and not allowed on a cricket field.

"No laughing matter at all. I do not know who the person involved is, he was not in a conscious state of mind. If that is the case, then it is a big worry. Someone's life is at risk, some people might think it is funny but for me, it is not funny at all. It shows the person who is trying to do it is in a state which is not appropriate. When you are in such a state trying something like that, the chances of mistakes are even more. It is not acceptable at all," Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo.

"It is the first time I am hearing such a drastic thing like this. It is not funny at all. If such an incident happens today, a life ban for that person involved and send that person to a rehab centre as quickly as possible. Life ban, better not come near to a cricket field then he will realise how funny is it or not funny," he added.

Not just Shastri but the likes of Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra have also been left shocked by Chahal's revelation and have urged the leg-spinner to name the offender. Chahal, who is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history, is currently part of the Rajasthan Royals squad.

Chahal has played for Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Rajasthan Royals in the T20 league so far and has 146 wickets to his name in 117 matches. He has started the ongoing season on a brilliant note for the Royals and has seven wickets in three matches for his side so far this season.

IPL 2022: Glenn Maxwell to return? Royal Challengers Bangalore predicted XI against Mumbai Indians

The five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) are in a spot of bother in IPL 2022. After their opening three games, the Mumbai Paltan remain winless and occupy the penultimate position in the points table. Facing two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at MCA Stadium, Pune on Wednesday evening (April 6), MI were expected to get off the mark courtesy their superior head-to-head record (22-7).

Talking about the match, KKR opted to bowl first after the coin toss. After a slow start, MI recovered courtesy Suryakumar Yadav's 36-ball 52, Tilak Verma's 38* and Kieron Pollard's 5-ball 22 not out to post 161-4. In reply, KKR were 67-3 at halfway stage and were soon reduced to 101-5 before Pat Cummins' 15-ball 56* (joint-fastest IPL fifty) and Venkatesh Iyer's 41-ball 50* took Kolkata past the finish line in the 16th over.

Post the KKR thrashing, captain Rohit Sharma addressed his troops in the dressing room and gave a motivating speech. He stressed on 'hunger' and 'desperation' and said, "We seriously cannot be blaming individuals here. It’s all of us. We win together, we lose together. That is as simple as that for me. I think slight desperation is required from each one of us. That desperation is very, very, very important when we play, especially in this tournament. Because oppositions are different, they come up with different plans all the time. We just need to stay ahead of them. We just need to stay on top of them. And the only way we can do that is by having that slight hunger and that desperation on the field - with the bat, with the ball."
