Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered their second straight defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they lost against Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 23 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 2nd). Chasing a target of 194 runs, Rohit Sharma & Co. were restricted on 170 by RR bowlers as fifties from Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma went in vain.

After losing their opening game against Delhi Capitals by 4 wickets, Mumbai Indians headed into the RR clash with an aim to bounce back to winning ways. Rohit won the toss and invited Rajasthan to bat first. RR got off to a poor start but rode on Jos Buttler's stunning century and crucial knocks of 30 and 35 runs from Samson and Shimron Hetmyer respectively to post 193 runs on the board.

While Jasprit Bumrah roared back to form with a three-wicket haul, it was yet another disappointing performance from the MI bowlers, who were taken to the cleaners by the RR batters. Tymal Mills also produced an improved show and picked up three wickets while conceding 35 runs off his four overs.

Mumbai Indians lost skipper Rohit (10) and Anmolpreet Singh (5) cheaply early in their run-chase before Ishan and Varma steadied the ship with fifties apiece. The duo added 81 runs for the third wicket but the MI inning faltered after their departure as the five-time champions fell short in the run chase.

"I thought they batted pretty well to get to 193. Buttler played an exceptional innings. We tried everything to get him out but he played really well. I thought 193 on that pitch could have been chased, especially when we needed 70 off 7 overs. But these things can happen as it is early days in the tournament, we can learn from that and come out better," said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

"Bumrah bowling well, Mills too, Tilak's batting was exceptional and so was Ishan's. I think one of those two should have batted through," he added.

Mumbai Indians are currently missing the services of their star batter Suryakumar Yadav, who has joined the team's bio-bubble but is yet to be deemed full fit to feature in the tournament. While Rohit admitted he would walk straight into the XI when fit, the MI skipper said the franchise is not looking to take any risk with his injury.

"He (Suryakumar Yadav) is a key player for us. Once he is fit he will come straight back. These finger injuries can be tricky and we want to give him time," said Rohit.

Buttler looked in sublime form from the very first over as he played the Mumbai Indians bowlers with absolute ease. He started confidently with a boundary off Jasprit Bumrah and a six off Daniel Sams but the third over saw the Rajasthan Royals score 20 runs against Basil Thampi.

It has been a season of redemption for Umesh Yadav till now in the Indian Premier League. The India fast bowler was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the end stages of the mega auction and after playing just two games in last year’s tournament, he was not touted as a major threat.

However, the 34-year-old has performed brilliantly for KKR this season and with eight wickets to his name, he currently wears the purple cap as the leading wicket-taker in the competition. Umesh was the pick of the bowlers once again on Friday as he claimed four scalps against Punjab Kings.

In match 7 of IPL 2022, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday evening (March 31).

Being asked to bat first, Ravindra Jadeja-led Yellow Army rode on impressive knocks from Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Jadeja, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni's cameo to post 210-7 in 20 overs. However, Rahul's 26-ball 40, Quinton de Kock's 61, Evin Lewis' 23-ball 55* and Ayush Badoni's 9-ball 19* led LSG to their first-ever win of the season as Lucknow chased down the total in 19.3 overs with six wickets in hand.

Earlier, CSK had gone down to last year's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 15th season's opening clash, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, also losing by six wickets.

IPL 2022: CSK attain unwanted record as defending champions off to their worst-ever start in a season

Umesh Yadav continued his dream run with a four-wicket haul before Andre Russell returned to his brutal best to fire Kolkata Knight Riders to an easy six-wicket win over Punjab Kings here on Friday.

Umesh (4/23), coming into the season with just two games over two IPL seasons and going unsold initially at the auction, produced career-best T20 figures to help KKR dismiss Punjab for a below par 137 in 18.2 overs.

It was supposed to be a straight forward chase but Rahul Chahar raised Punjab's hopes with a double wicket maiden to reduced KKR to 51 for four.

However, Russell (70 not out off 31 balls) came out in the middle and changed the game with his barrage of sixes, eight in total, to make it a cakewalk in just 14.3 overs.

He smashed three sixes off Odean Smith in an over that went for 30 runs. No rope is long enough when Russell is going all guns blazing and he was in that kind of zone on Friday night.

The Jamaican dasher fittingly ended the game with a couple of sixes off Liam Livingtsone's friendly leg-breaks. It was KKR's second win in three games while Punjab suffered their first loss of the season after the win over RCB.

Earlier, KKR bowlers stifled a power-laden Punjab Kings batting line-up. With heavy dew setting in later half of the games, fielding first has become a no-brainer this IPL and KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer called it right at the toss.

Punjab, which had successfully chased 200 plus in their opening game, enjoyed a good powerplay that yielded 62 for 3 in six overs. Veteran pacer Umesh, who has been proving his critics wrong this season., once again provided the breakthrough early in the game, removing opposition skipper Mayank Agarwal, who was found plumb in front after missing a rather straight and full delivery in the first over of the match.

Sri Lankan Bhanuka Rajapaksa (31 off 9) who had produced a match-winning knock in the first game, looked in sensational touch at the Wankhede Stadium.

In his brief stay in the middle, the top-order batter hammered three fours and as many sixes, mostly towards the mid-wicket region, leaving the spectators in awe. His breathtaking effort was perhaps the lone bright in an otherwise underwhelming innings. Iyer impressed with his leadership.

He brought back Umesh in the middle overs to ensure there was no fightback from Punjab. He also employed a slip in the 15th over and was rewarded for that with the wicket of Rahul Chahar.

His new ball partner Tim Southee and KKR's retained spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine were also too good for the Punjab batters. Livingstone (19 off 16) could convert his start while India U-19 star Raj Angad Bawa found the going tough for the second game in a row. Kagisa Rabada (25 off 16), playing his first game of the seasons, saved Punjab the blushes by getting much needed boundaries to take the total close to 140.

Umesh Yadav continued his dream run with a four-wicket haul before Andre Russell returned to his brutal best to fire Kolkata Knight Riders to an easy six-wicket win over Punjab Kings here on Friday.

Also read | IPL 2022: Tim Southee pulls off sensational catch against Punjab Kings - WATCH However, Russell (70 not out off 31 balls) came out in the middle and changed the game with his barrage of sixes, eight in total, to make it a cakewalk in just 14.3 overs. IPL 2022: Umesh Yadav, Andre Russell guide Kolkata Knight Riders to victory over Punjab Kings

New Zealand pacer Tim Southee pulled off a sensational catch to dismiss Kagiso Rabada during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings on Friday.

Rabada looked quite dangerous as he slammed two boundaries off Southee in the 17th over and then followed it up with two more fours and a six off Shivam Mavi. However, the South Africa fast bowler miscued a delivery from Andre Russell in the 19th over and the ball ballooned up in the sky.

Southee, who was positioned at the long-off boundary, ran a good amount of distance and pulled off a full-length dive to end Rabada’s innings. This was the second brilliant effort in the field for Southee in the match as he had earlier dismissed Liam Livingstone with a catch at the edge of the boundary.

With the ball, Southee became the first New Zealand cricketer ever to take 250 wickets in T20 cricket as he dismissed Shahrukh Khan for a duck. Thanks to his three-wicket haul, he stretched his lead over compatriot Trent Boult (178) even more and he achieved the feat on his 217th match.

The fast-bowling duo did not allow the Punjab Kings batsmen to settle down and wickets at regular intervals meant that Mayank Agarwal & Co were dismissed for just 137 with just two batsmen scoring in excess of 20 runs.

Mumbai Indians slumped to a four-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and a glaring absence in their middle order was talented India batsman Suryakumar Yadav.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 7 of the IPL 2022 edition, on Thursday evening (March 31), at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK posted 210-7 riding on vital knocks from Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Jadeja and MS Dhoni. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 7 of the IPL 2022 edition, on Thursday evening (March 31), at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. As expected, it was a high-scoring affair which went down to the wire before the Lucknow franchise emerged on top by six wickets in pursuit of a mammoth 211-run target. Being asked to bat first, Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK posted 210-7 riding on vital knocks from Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Jadeja and MS Dhoni. In reply, Rahul's 26-ball 40, Quinton de Kock's 61, Evin Lewis' 55* and Ayush Badone's 9-ball 19 not out propelled the LSG outfit to a memorable six-wicket win as they opened their account in the ongoing 15th season. Meanwhile, CSK are now off to their worst-ever start in an IPL season, losing their opening two games for the first time. Chris Gayle, one of the biggest T20 names, sprung a huge surprise when he didn't register for the IPL 2022 mega auction, which was held in mid-February. Having been someone who has missed some international fixtures in order to take part in T20 leagues worldwide, Universe Boss' absence from IPL 2022 led to speculations that the swashbuckling opener's IPL career has come to an end.

Nonetheless, the 42-year-old cricketer isn't going anywhere. Recently, Gayle shared an Instagram story where he can be seen sweating it out at the gym and revealed that he is preparing for IPL 2023. Here's Gayle's story:

For the unversed, Gayle is an IPL legend. He has represented the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in his glittering IPL career, amassing 4,965 runs at 39.72 and a strike rate of 148.96. Gayle is the seventh-highest run-getter overall; third-most runs among foreign players in the IPL. In addition, he has as many as six IPL tons (most by any batter).

Gayle was part of the PBKS squad since 2018, however, he wasn't a regular in the playing XI in the last two seasons before he withdrew from the second and final leg of IPL 2021, citing bio-bubble fatigue. It will be interesting to see which team acquires his services if he returns for IPL 2023.

Lucknow Super Giants youngster Ayush Badoni made a name for himself as he slammed a brilliant half century during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 encounter against Gujarat Lions. The right-hander came at a difficult time and stitched together a good partnership with Deepak Hooda.

In an interview ahead of Lucknow’s game against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday, team mentor Gautam Gambhir, who had a huge role in identifying the young cricketer’s talent in the past, praised him for his batting but also pointed out that “one innings doesn’t make him a superstar”.

“Too early to talk too much about him because one innings doesn’t make you a superstar,” Gambhir said on Thursday. The former India left-hander, however, was quick to add that the 22-year-old is very talented and was on the radar for a long time. “Yes, he’s got loads of talent and that’s why he’s sitting in this dressing room. IPL 2022: MS Dhoni reaches impressive milestone, joins Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in elite list

The cricketing action will continue to take place in IPL 2022 as match 7 of the 15th edition will see Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lock horns with the debutant team Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Thursday evening (March 31) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.

Both sides are coming to this encounter with a defeat in their respective season-openers. Talking about the defending champions CSK, the Ravindra Jadeja-led Men in Yellow were a pale shadow of themselves as they were brushed aside by KKR's clinical display in the opening game at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, CSK managed a paltry 131 for 5 riding on former skipper Dhoni's 50* (38) and Ravi Jadeja's uninspiring 28-ball 26. In reply, KKR closed the run-chase in the penultimate over as the Chennai bowlers did fairly well in not leaking runs at will. Nonetheless, they also didn't apply much pressure with wicket-taking deliveries at regular intervals.

On the other hand, the KL Rahul-led Lucknow franchise faced Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans (GT), at the same venue on Monday (March 28). In a hard-fought match, Lucknow fought well courtesy a late surge from their lower-order and some tight bowling, however, they came second as they lost by five wickets in defence of 159. Thus, both Chennai and Lucknow will be desperate to avoid two successive losses at the beginning of the new season.

CSK vs LSG, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants match?

Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be aiming for their second win in a row when they take on Faf du Plessis's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their second game of the ongoing IPL 2022. The two sides will meet at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Thursday (March 30).

While KKR got their campaign off to a flyer with a comprehensive victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their opening game of the season last week, RCB lost their opener against Punjab Kings by five wickets after failing to defend a total of 205 runs in what was a disappointing performance from their bowlers.

Despite their losing start, RCB will take a lot of positive from their game against Punjab Kings as skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli both looked in tremendous touch. They would be concerned about their bowling after a poor show against Punjab but RCB have amazing depth in their bowling attack and will be hopeful of the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga finding their rhythm soon.

KKR, on the other hand, lack quality in their pace attack despite Umesh Yadav starting the tournament on a confident note. While Umesh was among the wickets, Shivam Mavi was taken to the cleaners in the death overs by MS Dhoni. RCB batters can exploit KKR's weakness in the pace department and once again look to put on a big total on the board.

Rahul Tewatia blasted an impactful 40 off 24 balls after Mohammad Shami's sensational new ball spell to set up a five-wicket win for Gujarat Titans against Lucknow Super Giants in the battle of IPL debutants here on Monday.

Deepak Hooda (55 off 41 balls) and Ayush Badoni (54 off 41 balls) smashed quick-fire half centuries to help Super Giants recover to a respectable 158/6 after Shami (3/25) blew away their top-order.

Needing 68 off the last 30 balls, Titans were up against it but Tewatia (40 not out), David Miller (30 off 21) and IPL debutant Abhinav Manohar (15 not out off 7) pulled off a memorable win for their team with two balls to spare.

In pursuit of 159, Gujarat were down and out at 78/4 before Miller and Tewatia forged a match-winning 60 run-stand off just 34 balls.

They were brutal on Deepak Hooda, as they fetched 22 runs in the 16th over, with each hitting one six and one four. And then Tewatia hammered a six and two fours in the next over, where Gujarat amassed 17 runs, to bring down the equation to 29 from 18 balls.

Avesh removed Miller in the 18th over to raise his side's hopes, but Manohar and Tewatia, who hit five boundaries and two maximums, saw the team home.

Skipper Hardik Pandya (33) and Matthew Wade (30) forged 57 runs for the third wicket to take the innings forward after two early losses.

Earlier, Hooda and IPL debutant Badoni, who had endured plenty of struggles in the past three years, took Super Giants to a respectable score after Shami reduced them to 29 for four.

But then Hooda (55) and Badoni (54), took the onus on themselves and resurrected the Lucknow innings with an 87-run-stand off 68 balls.

Hooda struck six fours and two sixes in his 41-ball knock while Badoni hammered four boundaries and three maximums in his 41 ball innings.

After Hooda was trapped in front of the wicket by Rashid Khan (1/27) in the 16th over, Badoni, who is a product despite the system, upped the ante and played shots at will. Badoni hit the likes of Rashid Khan and Lockie Ferguson for a six and that should stay in his memory for life.

Shami then cleaned up Quinton De Kock (7), who missed a drive, in the third over as Lucknow was reeling at 13/2.
Lucknow were in all sorts of trouble at 20/3 as Evin Lewis (10) was dismissed, courtesy a stunning catch by Shubman Gill in the deep off pacer Varun Aaron (2/45).

Shami got his third wicket, after he castled Manish Pandey (6) with a ball that seamed back in after pitching on the fourth stump. It was the first-time Shami took three wickets in the power-play in the IPL. After six overs, Lucknow were reeling at 32/4. Then it was the Hooda and Badoni show.

Hardik Pandya, playing his first game since the T20 World Cup last year, conceded 37 runs in four overs. Badoni went after him in his final over that went for 19 runs.

It was a perfect start for Shami as he was able to induce a nick off KL Rahul in the very first ball of the match and Matthew Wade easily completed the catch behind the stumps. There was some doubt in the umpire’s mind but the replays made it clear that the ball made contact with the inside edge.

Shami followed it up with a vicious in-swinger in his second over as Quinton de Kock was completely outdone by the movement and the ball crashed in to his leg stump. The fast bowler continued to get a lot of assistance from the pitch and his final victim was Pandey who was beaten by his pace.

The impressive show from Shami earned him a lot of praise on Twitter and former India cricketers Mohammad Kaif and Wasim Jaffer also joined the public in lauding him for his performance.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri claimed he would have comfortably gone for a staggering sum of Rs 15 crore (INR 150 million) had he been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction as a player. One of the finest all-rounders to have played for India, Shastri was known for his flamboyant style of cricket during his playing days.

Considering the demand for multi-dimensional players in T20 cricket these days and all-rounders playing key roles for their respective teams, Shastri claimed he would have raked in huge money had he been part of an IPL auction. When asked about the kind of money he would have fetched as a player at an auction, Shastri said he would have comfortably been in the Rs 15 crore bracket and would also have been the captain of the team.

“Comfortably in the 15 crore bracket. Comfortably! And captain of the side. No question. It's a no-brainer,” Shastri told ESPNCricinfo.

He also picked up a total of 280 wickets across formats in international cricket. Shastri took up commentary after retirement and has enjoyed a great stint as a commentator.

IPL 2022: Numbers reveal one area of concern for Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi Capitals as they defeated Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 opener on Sunday. The left-arm chinaman kept the batsmen at bay with his brilliant line and length and he ended the match with figures of 3/18 after 4 overs.

The last couple of years have been rough for Kuldeep as he lost his position in the Indian cricket team and he barely featured for Kolkata Knight Riders. During the 2021 season, the spinner missed the UAE leg due to an injury that forced him to undergo a knee surgery. It was important for me to go for the rehab and thanks to the facilities and trainers at the NCA, I recovered very well and in time to get back into the Indian set up. And slowly I started match preparation and when I started playing the games, I got the confidence and Rohit motivated me a lot," Kuldeep said.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) started way back in 2008. Since the inaugural edition, the cash-rich league has grown from strength to strength and created a huge market for the expansion of T20 cricket across the globe. It led to the start of various T20 leagues worldwide and, thus, has been a stepping stone in the rise of the shortest format of the game.

After IPL, the likes of Pakistan Super League (PSL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Big Bash League (BBL), etc. have come into existence. Many times debate sparks as to which is the biggest league among all. However, most experts of the game and ardent fans believe IPL remains a level higher than all. Recently, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria made a big claim on IPL, comparing it with PSL.

"Being a very professional event, IPL is providing so many talents to Indian cricket. And it’s getting better and better with each passing season, while PSL is doing hardly anything for Pakistan cricket. If some player performs well in PSL, the unprofessional approach of Pakistan Cricket Board mars his chances of getting into the national side," Kaneria said.

Kaneria added, "See, there are no favourites in the T20 format. But if we talk about the combination, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are good. There are two new teams in this edition, and you cannot take them lightly. IPL is a tournament in which all the cricketers want to play. You see, many players from South Africa took leave from their national side to play in the IPL. So this is turning out to be a big event every single year."

Match 2 of the ongoing IPL 2022 edition will see the most successful team, i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI) face the young and exciting Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals on Sunday afternoon (March 27) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. After the 15th season got off to a perfect start with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locking horns with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), on March 26 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, expect another mouth-watering contest between the two sides.

Talking about the MI Paltans, the Men in Blue are a new-look side but have retained their core players. The likes of skipper Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav will form the nucleus of the franchise whereas the new additions in the form of Tim David, Tymal Mills, Dewald Brevis, Fabian Allen will be eager to add to the side. It will be interesting to see what combination does the Mahela Jayawardene-led MI franchise decide upon aganist DC's young guns. On the other hand, DC lost the services of Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis, Kagiso Rabada but still have much firepower to rely upon, with Rovman Powell, Mustafizur Rahman, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, David Warner, Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel.

Nonetheless, DC's biggest worry is the availability of players. Many of their superstar cricketers haven't joined the side and will miss the opening few games. Hence, DC's bench strength will be put to test and a young captain in Rishabh will have to cleverly manage his resources.

Match prediction for MI vs DC: While it is an underrated rivalry between the two sides, MI just have an edge over DC by being marginally ahead (16-14) in head-to-head tally. In the last season, DC completed a double over MI after losing four back-to-back games, including the finale, in IPL 2020. Expect plenty of runs and some assitance for the slower bowlers as the game progresses. While it is tough to predict a winner at this stage of the tournament, expect MI to edge past DC on experience.
