Punjab Kings (PBKS) assembled a quality squad at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction ahead of the 2022 season earlier this year but failed to go the distance. They roped in the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Kagiso Rabada among others to bolster their squad but ended up falling short once again as they failed to even make it to the playoffs under new captain Mayank Agarwal.

While they invested heavily in experienced campaigners, PBKS also bought some talented youngsters to strengthen their squad. One of the youngsters who impressed for the franchise in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 was Jitesh Sharma. The wicket-keeper batter showcased his explosive batting prowess in the lower-middle order and played some good finishing cameos for the team.

He was one of the regular features in the playing XI after making his debut for Punjab Kings and finished the season with 234 runs from 12 matches for his team striking at an impressive 163.64. Impressed with his batting exploits, former India batter Virender Sehwag had said Sharma deserved a spot in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad as a backup keeper.

However, it's not just Sehwag who has backed the youngster to do well in the future. Sharma revealed his PBKS teammate Kagiso Rabada told him that he will play for India one day. The South African pacer even requested Sharma not to smash him when they come up against each other in international cricket.

"After the last match, Kagiso Rabada called me up, asked me to sit beside him and said 'do you think you can play for India?'. I said 'KG, I don't think about the future. I try to focus on every match, taking it one match at a time and concentrate on every single day.' He said 'I think, in a few years, I'm going to bowl to you in international cricket, just don't smash me'," said Jitesh on Instagram show 'Say Yash to Sports'.

Sharma certainly possesses brilliant hitting abilities down the order and proved to be an asset for Punjab Kings in the tournament as he played some useful knocks. He will be hoping to continue his stellar run for the franchise next season.

England cricket team's white-ball captain Eoin Morgan is reportedly set to retire from international cricket soon and might not lead the hosts in the upcoming T20I series against India next month. Morgan has been one of the best captains to have led England and is the only skipper to have guided the side to a World Cup triumph. He has also been lauded by many over the years for transforming the way England play white-ball cricket.

England had failed to make it to the knockout stages of the ODI World Cup in 2015 following which Morgan took over the reins. England adopted an aggressive and all-out approach in white-ball cricket under Morgan and tasted huge success as their performances on the field improved significantly.

Morgan also helped the likes of Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow among others to become world-beaters in white-ball cricket and form a strong core for England in both ODIs and T20Is. England have reaped rewards from Morgan's leadership and his retirement is set to mark the end of an era for the team.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain heaped praise on Morgan after reports of his retirement from international cricket emerged on Monday (June 27). Hussain said Morgan was ahead of his time in realising the value of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for English cricket and helped English players become better by encouraging them to play in the premier T20 tournament.

"He was also ahead of his time, along with Kevin Pietersen, in realising the value to English cricket of the IPL. First, he helped make better players of the likes of Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone. Then he encouraged them to play in the IPL, where they learned to be even better," Hussain wrote in his column for Daily Mail.

Morgan along with former England captain Kevin Pietersen was among the first few English players to play in the IPL despite resistance from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Morgan is also England's most successful ODI skipper of all time with 76 wins in 126 ODIs and a winning percentage of 65.25.

Talking about his replacement as England's white-ball captain after his retirement, Hussain believes Jos Buttle will be the ideal candidate to take over the reins. Buttler is one of the best white-ball batters in the world at present and has been in top-notch form recently.

"Buttler is the perfect replacement. He and Morgan are close friends, and he’s stepped in the Morgan way of doing things. He'll have no problem in replicating his style of play. And there's no greater compliment than that," wrote Hussain.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have had a number of superstars play for them in the Indian Premier League (IPL). From the likes of Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble to Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle, RCB have been home to some of the legends of the game. However, despite having a star-studded team over the years, the franchise has failed to lift their maiden IPL title. They have been part of the IPL since its inception in 2008 but have failed to win the tournament even once.

Gayle has arguably been one of RCB's best-ever signings in IPL history and enjoyed tremendous success with the franchise in the IPL. The West Indies legend was incidentally roped in by the franchise as an injury replacement for Australian pacer Dirk Nannes ahead of the 2011 season and went on to prove a sensational signing for the franchise.

Gayle was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for his first two seasons in IPL in 2009 and 2010 before being released by the team. He was then picked by RCB as a replacement for injured Nannes and went on to take IPL 2011 by a storm with 608 runs in just 12 games at an incredible strike rate of 183.13.

He followed it up with more than 700 runs in the next two seasons and established his credentials as one of the best hitters in T20 cricket and famously earned the nickname 'Universe Boss' for his batting exploits. Gayle enjoyed a phenomenal stint at RCB before being released in 2017.

Former RCB owner Vijay Mallya was one of the key figures behind bringing Gayle to RCB as a replacement for Nannes ahead of the 2011 season. Super friendship since I recruited him for RCB. Best acquisition of a player ever," Mallya wrote while sharing a picture with Gayle.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to launch a Women's Indian Premier League (IPL) the next year. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had recently said the project is close to his heart and the valuation of the tournament will shock many when it gets underway next year. Over the years, several prominent figures in the women's game have called for a women's version of the IPL pointing out how it would help strengthen the bench strength as far as women's cricket is concerned in India.

With several BCCI officials hinting that a full-fledged women's IPL is not too far away from materialising, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has suggested a bold move to the BCCI. Modi, who was one of the brains behind the inception of IPL in 2008, wants every franchise in the tournament to also run a women's team along with their men's side.

Modi believes it should be mandatory for all the franchises to own a women's team as it would help improve the infrastructure of women's cricket in India. Currently, there are ten teams who are part of the IPL and none of them have a women's team.

"I didn't see much of IPL women's games this year (Women's T20 Challenge), but I think one of the biggest things they should do is make it mandatory for an IPL franchise to have a women's team," Lalit Modi told NDTV.

"If an IPL franchise owner is able to have a women's team, you'll see the bench strength in Indian women's cricket go up. You'll see investment in women's cricket by owners who are already making good money now," he added.

Several franchise T20 leagues around the globe have already invested in a women's league or are planning to do so. The Big Bash League in Australia had the Women's Big Bash while The Hundred in England too has the Women's Hundred League. IPL also conducts the Women's T20 Challenge annually but the tournament is a short affair consisting of just a handful of matches between three teams.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has bigger and better plans for the Indian Premier League (IPL) after pocketing a staggering amount of money for the tournament's media rights for the next five-year cycle. Disney Star and Viacom18 broke the bank to secure the TV and digital rights respectively for the next five seasons of IPL in India. The BCCI is now in talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to expand the IPL in the near future.

The richest T20 league in the world, IPL has been attracting the best players from across the world to ply their trade in the tournament since its inception in 2008. It is arguably one of the best cricket events in the world at present and is expected to grow further in the coming years.

IPL is currently a 10-team tournament and consisted of a total of 77 matches in the 15th edition of the tournament this year. However, the BCCI is planning to increase the duration of the tournament as well as the number of matches played every season. BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the board is already in talks with the ICC and its member nations to expand the IPL.

"We have been talking with our fellow Member Boards and the ICC about having a bigger dedicated window for the IPL. The IPL is a marquee event on the annual cricket calendar, and it is now only behind the NFL. The quality of cricket that you witness in IPL is world-class with senior international stars coming and playing with and against their Indian counterparts," Shah told Cricbuzz.

"Not just cricketers but the IPL has some legends of the game now turning up as coaches. It is a fantastic platform and benefits everyone as the experience one gets here is priceless. There will be an increase in the number of games as we go ahead," he added.

IPL used to be an eight-team affair before the 2022 season. However, BCCI added two new teams - Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans to the fray this year making it a ten-team event. The number of matches in the tournament is expected to go up to around 84 games per season from next year onwards.

BCCI to earn HUMONGOUSLY per ball! Unimaginable numbers behind IPL 2023-27 media rights auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) in a span of just 15 years has managed to become one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world. The inaugural edition of the IPL was played in 2008 and there has been no looking back ever since as the T20 league continues to witness a massive growth in its popularity across the globe. IPL is arguably the biggest T20 league in the world and has the best players from across the globe playing their trade in the competition.

IPL is organised annually by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which is the richest cricket board in the world. While there is no doubting IPL's popularity and its staggering growth over the years, the T20 league has still some distance to cover to become the most popular sporting league in the world.

However, BCCI president and former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly recently made a bold claim stating that the IPL earns more revenue than the English Premier League (EPL). The English Premier League is the top-tier tournament in English football and is one of the most-watched sporting leagues globally.

EPL's popularity is not just limited to the UK and the competition is followed by passionate fans from all corners of the world. It is also deemed one of the most difficult football leagues in the world for players and involves huge finances in terms of transfers, tickets and other expenditures.

But speaking at the India Leadership Council event, Ganguly said IPL earns more revenue than EPL and it gives him immense happiness to have witnessed cricket grow from strength to strength over the years.

"I've seen the game evolve, where players like me earned a few hundreds and now have the potential of earning crores. This game is run by the fans, by the people of this country, and by the BCCI, which was formed by cricket fans. This sport is strong and will continue to evolve. The IPL generates more revenue than the English Premier League. It makes me feel happy and proud that the sport I love has evolved to become so strong," Ganguly said.

IPL media rights auction: Everything you need to know about date, time, bidders, base price

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) entered IPL 2022 as the defending champions and expectations were once again riding high on the four-time champions. However, the Yellow Army fell flat and finished at the ninth-place in what was a forgettable campaign for them.

There were, however, some positives for the Chennai franchise with some players raising their hands and performing well. South Africa's Dwaine Pretorius may not have played every game but the all-rounder did make a mark with some good performances and recently spilled the beans on his journey with the CSK camp.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the upcoming India-South Africa T20Is, which starts on June 09, Pretorius dwelled on the learnings from CSK skipper MS Dhoni. He revealed, "The biggest thing I learnt from him is how calm he is at the crease and how much he tries to take pressure off himself and put it onto the bowler. He made me realise that at the death, the batter isn't under more pressure, it's actually the bowler that is under more pressure."

"As a bowler, you can still lose the match if you have to defend 18 off the last three balls and as a batter you can win it. It was a fresh mindset. He doesn't get too excited. He doesn't get too down on himself. Anything is always possible and I love that about him. He is very optimistic. He believes he can do anything. I am going to try and bring that into my game: the calmness but also that self-belief that from any position, any game can be won," Pretorius added.

Speaking on CSK's disastrous run, where they failed to enter the playoffs for the second time in their rich history, Pretorius stated, "What was nice about the CSK franchise is that it is very experienced. We all understand that cricket doesn't always go your way. It's very important to just take the positives out of a bad season and try and build for a stronger future. It's all about building for the next year or three years and trying to make sure a bad season is not a complete loss."

Pretorius ended with six scalps from equal number of games, bowling in the powerplays and death overs, and also led the charge with the bat with a handy 28 in CSK's three-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI), at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai, in match 33 of IPL 2022.

He is currently part of South Africa's T20I squad for the five-match series versus hosts India.

IPL 2022 edition is in its business end as there are only a handful of games left in the league stage before the 15th season heads into the playoffs. As of now, Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) have confirmed a spot in the playoffs whereas Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are already out of the race to finish in the top four.

Thus, the likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) remain in the fray for the remaining three spots. Here's how each one of them have a chance to make it to the playoffs:

LSG: KL Rahul-led franchise already have one foot in the playoffs with 16 points. They just need a win in their remaining two fixtures but can also progress ahead without a win. Nonetheless, they will have to depend on other franchises' results to remain in their favour.

RR: Sanju Samson & Co. have 14 points, i.e. seven wins from 12 games. A win would be enough for them to enter the playoffs but the one-time winners will be eager to win both games and ensure a top-two finish. In case they lose both, they will have an eye on the NRR of other teams who can end up with 14 points.

RCB: The three-time runners-up have two games in hand and have 14 points under their belt. A win will also do the trick for them but they will also hope to emerge on top in both the remaining fixtures.

DC: Rishabh Pant-led Delhi franchise have 12 points from an equal number of encounters. They need to win both and if a single defeat can lead to their exit.

SRH: The 2016 champions started with two defeats and then won five in a row before derailing their campaign by losing as many as four matches in succession at a crucial time of the league stage. If they win all their remaining three fixtures, they will go through but a single defeat can hurt them.

KKR: The Shreyas Iyer-led KKR outfit are very much out of the race with only 5 victories in 12 games. Even if they win their remaining matches, they would need to do it handsomely. Also then, they might find two to five teams competing for the last spot at 14 points. Tough!

PBKS: Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab also need to win all their remaining fixtures. They currently have 10 points from 11 games. Even if they emerge on top in all their fixtures, it might boil down to NRR. At present, Punjab have a negative NRR (-0.231).

IPL 2022 playoffs qualification scenario: EXPLAINED! Here's how 7 teams remain in fray for 3 spots

Hardik Pandya made heads turn in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 edition. He was making a comeback at the competitive level during IPL 2022, after being out of action since the 2021 T20 World Cup, and, hence, all eyes were on him. His fitness has been a major concern, thus, many had their eyes on him and whether he would bowl as well.

Hardik ended IPL 2022 with 487 runs -- his best tally in a season -- eight wickets and also inspired the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their first-ever IPL title. His leadership was exemplary as Hardik was calm and composed for most parts of the field, motivated his troops, made some good bowling changes and didn't get bogged down by additional responsibility. Hence, Hardik's elder brother Krunal Pandya -- who was part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who lost the Eliminator -- lauded his sibling and penned a heartfelt note on Twitter.

“My bro. Only you know the amount of hard work that’s gone behind this success of yours - early mornings, countless hours of training, discipline and mental strength. And to see you lift the trophy is the fruit of your hard work. You deserve it all and so much more. People had written you off but you keep writing history. Wish I was there when more than a lakh people were cheering your name,” said Krunal in a couple of tweets.

'People had written you off but....': Krunal pens heartfelt note for brother Hardik after Gujarat win IPL 2022

IPL 2022 got over on Sunday evening (May 29) when the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the summit clash, by seven wickets, to win their maiden title in their first-ever season. With this, the third-longest IPL season came to an end as cricket fans loved every bit of it, spanning over two months.

While Hardik's Gujarat defied all odds by winning the season with ease, many experienced performers fell flat whereas some veterans did exceedingly well along with some uncapped players. As the likes of Jos Buttler, KL Rahul, Liam Livingstone, Md Shami, Avesh Khan, Hardik, Shimron Hetmyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Aiden Markram, David Miller, David Warner did very well, big guns such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Glenn Maxwell fell flat and couldn't do much.

Amid all this, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra shared his IPL 2022 XI, featuring some big names. His list, however, didn't have Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) Dinesh Karthik (330 runs at 183.33), Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) pacer Umran Malik (22 scalps), Lucknow's Mohsin Khan (14 victims), Gujarat's vice-captain and all-rounder Rashid Khan (19 wickets and effective cameos with the bat) and some other impressive performers.

On his Youtube channel, Chopra said, "Along with him (Buttler), I have kept KL Rahul. I thought about Quinton de Kock and Shubman Gill but KL Rahul - more than 600 runs, two centuries. Once again eat, sleep and score 600 runs in the IPL. Form is temporary, KL Rahul is permanent."

Chopra further opined, "I had done a poll for No. 3 - Deepak Hooda or Rahul Tripathi. I have picked Rahul Tripathi, about 80% have also voted for Rahul Tripathi. After that, my Player of the Tournament, his name is Hardik Pandya - he is a captain, bowler and batter. He is the captain of this team as well." He asserted, "At No. 5, I have got Liam Livingstone. He is a six-hitting machine and has done amazingly well this year. At No. 6, some thinking was required on who could be kept - DK (Dinesh Karthik) could have been there but I have actually gone with David Miller because he has had a season that is one to remember." He also slotted another all-rounder by picking Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) Andre Russell -- with 335 runs and 17 scalps.

Chopra added, "In my four bowlers, there is one spinner, his name is Yuzi Chahal. He is the Purple Cap holder. Rashid Khan and Wanindu Hasaranga could have also been there here but my four overseas slots are over."

"Avesh Khan is in my side. I was thinking about Mohsin Khan, Umran Malik and Prasidh Krishna but I am still going with Avesh Khan - fewer bad days. After that, I have gone with Mohammed Shami, he was unbelievable. Last but not the least, at No. 11 is Arshdeep Singh. In my opinion, he has been the standout bowler once again."

Ashish Nehra becomes 1st Indian to achieve huge feat after Gujarat Titans win IPL 2022

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) weren't expected to go very far in IPL 2022 edition. Comprising some key players and also a lot of inexperience in their squad, Gujarat stunned one and all as different players rose up to the occasion in every game to see them top the group stage and then become the first-ever team to reach the IPL 2022 final. Further, they were never threatened by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the summit clash as they romped past the one-time winners by seven wickets and claim the trophy in their maiden season.

Talking about the contest, the Sanju Samson-led RR franchise opted to bat first at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday evening (May 29). Despite a good start by Yashasvi Jaiswal, RR never got going after the dismissals of captain Sanju and in-form opener Jos Buttler to manage only a paltry 130-9. Captain Hardik returned with 3 for 17 to lead from the front as Rajasthan was restricted to a below-par total. In reply, Shubman Gill's sedate 45 not out, Hardik's 30-ball 34 and David Miller's blistering 19-ball 32 propelled GT to an easy win as they clinched the title in their first-ever IPL season (joining RR to become only the second team to achieve this feat).

Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans claim maiden title: Complete list of IPL winners since 2008

The discussion regarding Babar Azam’s inclusion in the list of top batters currently active in world cricket has been dominating headlines for quite some time now. The 27-year-old has been performing consistently for his national team and he had a particularly great outing against Australia in the home series. Royal Challengers Bangalore veteran Dinesh Karthik has now weighed in on the topic and he believes that Azam can not only become a top batter in all three formats of the game but can also join the ranks of Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Joe Root.

Azam scored consecutive hundreds in the first two Test matches against Australia this year and then followed it up with two more hundreds in the ODI series. The right-hander was the top-scorer for Pakistan in the one-off T20I encounter but it was not enough to clinch the win for Pakistan.

Speaking on the International Cricket Council (ICC) Review, Karthik explained that Azam has all the credentials to dominate world cricket in the coming years and become one of the top ranked cricketers in the world. The Pakistan skipper is currently top of the ODI and T20I rankings.

"It is a very strong ‘Fab Four’ that we are talking about, and they have obviously been there for much longer, but there is no doubt that Babar has all the credentials and he is going to make it a 'Fab Five'," Karthik, who impressed with his finishing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, said.

IPL 2022 playoffs: All you need to know about schedule, timings and venues

Punjab Kings ended their campaign on a winning note, crushing an already demoralised Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in an inconsequential final IPL league match here on Sunday.

Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed only 157 for 8 on a good batting track.

But it was never going to be enough as Liam Livingstone made mincemeat of a hapless SRH attack, scoring 49 not out off 22 balls, and also hitting the coveted 1000th six of the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan (39 off 32 balls) and Jitesh Sharma (19 off 7 balls) also contributed handsomely to the team's cause as the chase was completed in just 15.1 overs.

Punjab Kings, who haven't made the play-offs since their final appearance in 2014, finished sixth while the Sunrisers ended their high-spending IPL on eighth in the 10-team competition.

For Livingstone, it was all about smashing big sixes once again as he hit five in all, while Dhawan helped himself to two fours and two sixes.

It was Jonny Bairstow (23 off 15 balls), who straightaway attacked Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Washington Sundar, with a flurry of boundaries to set the tempo.

It helped Dhawan to play his accumulating game as Punjab maintained their philosophy of all out attack even as Sunrisers dropped some sitters on the field.

Worst was Washington Sundar's blooper when Livingstine tried to hit Jagadeesha Suchit against the turn and offered a dolly at point.

There were too many on-field bungles with Roamrio Shepherd's 15th over going for 23 runs.

Earlier, Punjab Kings bowlers showed a lot of discipline, restricting SRH to 157 for 8 in 20 overs.

Arshdeep Singh (0/25 in 4 overs) celebrated his maiden India call-up with another parsimonious spell but it was his state team colleague Harpreet Brar (3/26 in 4 overs), who was the pick of the bowlers with wickets of Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram.

With four qualifiers already decided on Saturday, there was little more than academic interest left in the game and the 'Orange Army' in fact looked jaded and more like going through the motions while batting before sprucing up their scores in the final few overs.

SRH's best batter of the season, Abhishek Sharma (43 off 32 balls) once again got a start but should have converted it into a big one which didn't happen.

A solemn looking Tripathi (20) did cross a personal milestone of 400 runs for the season but disappointment of not making it to the national team was writ large in his body language as he failed to connect the big hits.

Brar didn't do anything extraordinary and kept it mostly on the stumps, stifling the opposition batters for runs.

It was left to Romario Shepherd (26 not out off 15 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 19 balls) to take the Sunrisers past the 150-run mark, as both of them used the long handle to good effect in their 58-run sixth-wicket partnership off only 4.5 overs.

In fact, 50-plus runs came in the last four overs as Nathan Ellis (3/40 in 4 overs) erred in length despite a couple of back-to-back wickets that he got in the bargain.

Ellis did bowl a good hat-trick delivery which Bhuvneshwar Kumar averted only to get run-out of the very next delivery.

Top 5 Indian Premier League seasons with the highest number of sixes

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has heaped praise on Hardik Pandya for his excellent captaincy stint with Gujarat Titans (GT) so far in their debut campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Hogg believes Hardik has shown traits similar to MS Dhoni while leading Gujarat Titans so far this season.

Hardik's GT have been enjoying a stellar debut campaign in IPL 2022 as they currently sit on top of the points table with 18 points from 12 matches so far this season. Gujarat are also the first and only team so far this season to have secured a berth in the playoffs.

Not many had expected Gujarat Titans to have come this far in the tournament this season after the conclusion of the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year. While they do not have one of the most balanced squads, several players have stepped up for the side throughout the season and have won matches single-handedly for the team.

Lauding Hardik for his terrific leadership, Hogg highlighted how the Gujarat Titans skipper has shown traits like calmness and composure similar to that of Dhoni. The former Australia spinner also reckoned Hardik has managed to get the best out of his players just like Dhoni has been doing over the years at CSK.

"We look at the MS Dhoni components to his game style: Calmness, not getting overboard by the situation, and changing his body reactions to any situations when they're under pressure. He's still cool, calm, collected, and composed. He talks to his players to make sure they've got a clear mind of what they want to execute next under pressure," said Hogg while talking about Hardik in a video on his YouTube channel.

"He's calming everything down. He knows the end result, he's not reacting quickly to certain situations. And when he makes changes, they are precise changes, and they have been game-changing moments. and that is MS Dhoni," he added.

This is Hardik's first season as captain in the IPL after he was roped in by Gujarat Titans ahead of the new season post being released by his former side Mumbai Indians. Hardik had only played for Mumbai Indians before joining GT and played an instrumental role in MI's success with his all-round performances.

While he has been brilliant as a leader, Hardik has also led from the front with the bat for the debutants. He has so far managed 344 runs in 11 matches for his team at an average of 38.22 and a strike rate of over 131. Gujarat Titans are currently on top of the table and will be hoping to secure a spot in the top two with two games still in hand.

'He is cool, calm and collected': Brad Hogg picks new IPL captain who has traits like MS Dhoni

Former Indian cricket team skipper Sunil Gavaskar picked Shreyas Iyer as the ‘premier player’ for Kolkata Knight Riders and said that he can play freely right now with Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh getting runs in the last few matches. Iyer has scored 336 runs in 12 appearances for the KKR and although KKR are seventh in the IPL points table, Iyer’s captaincy has received a lot of praise.

"Shreyas Iyer is a premier player for KKR, he's been a premier player for whichever franchise he's played for. It's good to see that Shreyas doesn't have to share all the burden in the batting department. The recent exploits of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh will give him the confidence to bat freely and play those big shots early in the innings", Gavaskar said on Star Sports Cricket Live.

Gavaskar’s fellow expert – Mohammed Kaif – also praised Shreyas Iyer for his performances in the tournament this year and said that he is the right person to take KKR in the right direction.

"Shreyas Iyer is a class batsman. He loves to play under pressure and knows how to score runs consistently. He likes playing long and impactful innings. He is a brilliant captain and can put KKR in the right direction with his batting," said the former Indian cricket team player.

"Shreyas has one weakness though. He doesn't play leg spinners well and tends to get deceived by the turn and flight from the leggies. It is surprising to see an Indian batter struggle consistently against leg-spin. He's been dismissed by leg-spinners quite a few times in this season too," he added.

From superstar Virat Kohli to finisher Dinesh Karthik: Top ten run-getters in IPL

Match 56 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the two bottom-ranked sides face each other at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (May 10). Both sides have had a tough ride in the 15th season and, hence, occupy the last two spots in the points table.

Talking about the MI franchise, they became the first team to be out of competition from the playoffs race when Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS), on Saturday (May 07), in match 52 of the 15th season. With nothing to lose and an eye on the future, the Rohit Sharma-led franchise will aim to now play spoilsport to KKR's chances of advancing ahead, who have been a pale shadow of themselves this season.

MI are coming into this fixture on the back of two successive wins, after eight failures on the trot. Beating RR and Gujarat Titans (GT), they will be confident to dent KKR's chances, against whom they enjoy a superior head-to-head record (22-8).

KKR, on the other hand, are coming into this fixture following a whopping 75-run margin defeat at the hands of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Chasing a competitive 177, KKR folded for 101 as their big guns have continued to disappoint with the bat. The bowling department has fared better for the Kolkata franchise but the onus remains on Umesh Yadav (who missed the last match), Tim Southee and Sunil Narine. They don't have a fixed fifth-bowling option, which has been a cause of concern for the two-time winners.

Match prediction for KKR vs MI clash: While KKR are far behind MI in head-to-head, they beat them in the earlier fixture this season. Pat Cummins, Venky Iyer were the star performers and it will be interesting to see if both the benched players will find a place in the playing XI.

Both sides might still prefer to chase despite Delhi Capitals (DC) folding for 117 in pursuit of 209 set by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last evening. Will MI make it three wins in a row?

MI vs KKR, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders match?

Devon Conway's blazing blade and Moeen Ali's effective off-breaks beautifully complemented each other as Chennai Super Kings outclassed Delhi Capitals in every department of the game, winning their IPL match by a comprehensive 91-run margin.

Put in to bat, Conway completed a hat-trick of half-centuries with a superb 87 off 49 balls to set up a winning score of 208 for 6 in 20 overs.

The scoreboard pressure was always mounting on Capitals as they finally managed 117 in 17.4 overs with Moeen (3/13 in 4 overs) taking wickets of Mitchell Marsh (25 off 20 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (21 off 11 balls) in quick succession to finish the contest.

Mukesh Choudhary (2/22 in 4 overs), Simarjeet Singh (2/27 in 4 overs) and Dwayne Bravo (2/24 in 2.3 overs) then completed the formalities as CSK are now up to eight points from 11 games and can earn a maximum of 14 points if they win their remaining three games, which unfortunately doesn't look like being enough for play-off qualification.

Delhi Capitals remain on fifth position with 10 points and will now need to win all three remaining games and also expect a few other results to favour them if they harbour any hopes of qualification.

What has been a major issue with DC's 2022 performance is lack of consistency. There are days when they are brilliant and then on other days less than ordinary with inept performances.

KS Bharat (8 off 5 balls) was playing his first game and can be excused but the likes of Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant have hardly done anything of note during the season and even 209 isn't a chaseable total eight out of 10 times, there wasn't a semblance of fight.

Pant was dismissed while trying to play against the turn while Marsh was holed out in the deep. By the time Rovman Powell was gone, the match was as good as over.

In fact, the track that looked as flat as a highway suddenly became difficult for strokeplay in the second half.

But when Conway was batting, it seemed like a walk in the park for CSK.

He hit seven fours and five sixes and also added 110 for the opening wicket with Ruturaj Gaikwad (41 off 33 balls) to lay the foundation for a big score.

Conway added another 59 runs for the second wicket with Shivam Dube (32 off 19 balls) before MS Dhoni (21 no off 8 balls) added insult to DC's injuries at the fag end.

The South Africa-born New Zealander has been one of the key players for an ageing CSK side in transition and has responded nicely to captain Dhoni's call of being a like-for-like replacement of Faf du Plessis.

What makes Conway a standout performer among most overseas recruits is his mastery over spinners which is an absolute must to be a consistent success in IPL.

Whether CSK make it to play-off this time or not, Conway in all likelihood will be serving the franchise for the next five years at least.

Along with Gaikwad, Conway showed how aesthetically pleasing stroke-play can destroy the confidence of rival bowlers.

There weren't any lap-scoops, switch hits, reverse flicks but shots within the 'V' with immaculate use of feet wile negotiating the spinners. It did help that DY Patil Stadium track resembled a highway due to its flat nature.

Kuldeep Yadav's (3-0-43-0) length was completely in disarray as Conway repeatedly came down the ground to loft the deliveries with disdain.

If the delivery was flighted, Conway would come down the track and hit it down the ground or wide of long-on. If the bowler kept it flat, he would thump it through the covers and if it was fast an full, he would play the conventional sweep shot over deep square leg. The shot that stood out was a cover drive which was more like a slap with minimal back-lift.

Conway's third consecutive fifty came off 27 balls as poor Kuldeep had no clue as to what had hit him.

His deliveries were like cannon fodder as he was hit for four fours and two sixes in his first spell.

Conway repeated his 'dancing down the track' act in Kuldeep's second spell with another lofted six as DC bowlers were left short of answers on the day.

Also read | IPL 2022: Faf Du Plessis, Wanindu Hasaranga set up RCB's massive win over SRH Delhi Capitals remain on fifth position with 10 points and will now need to win all three remaining games and also expect a few other results to favour them if they harbour any hopes of qualification. IPL 2022: Devon Conway, Moeen Ali shine in big CSK victory over Delhi Capitals

Spinner Wanindu Hasaranga picked up a five-wicket haul after skipper Faf du Plessis' impactful half-century as Royal Challengers recorded a 67-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad to boost their play-off hopes in the IPL here on Sunday.

Opting to bat on a slow surface, du Plessis led from the front with a 50-ball 73 not out, while Dinesh Karthik (eight-ball 30 not out) provided the late flourish as RCB overcame an anxious start to post 192/3.

In response, Sunrisers Hyderabad were skittled out for 125 to crash to their fourth loss on the trot as Hasaranga stymied their chase with figures of 4-1-18-5.

The win also avenged their shocking nine-wicket loss to Hyderabad in the first leg at the Brabourne where Bangalore had collapsed to 68 allout.

Making amend for a sloppy outing on the field, Hasaranga cleverly used his wrong ones and derailed their chase in the middle overs with wickets of the hardhitting Nicholas Pooran and Jagadeesha Suchith in successive overs.

The Lankan then ended his spell in style with a double-wicket maiden, dismissing Shashank Singh and Umran Malik in successive deliveries to virtually seal it for Bangalore.

With this, he became the second bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal to get past the 20-wicket mark in the IPL. Hasaranga is now one wicket shy of current Purple Cap holder Chahal's tally of 22.

Hyderabad No 3 Rahul Tripathi made a fine 58 to keep them in the hunt but Josh Hazlewood (2/17) dismissed him and followed it up with the wicket of Kartik Tyagi next ball.

For Bangalore, it was their second win in a row, coming on the back of a hattrick of defeats as they firmed up their place inside top-four.

Likewise Bangalore, Hyderabad too had a jittery start and went on to lose two wickets in the first over in their tall chase of 193.

Like Kohli, Williamson also went for a golden duck in a rare instance -- only third in IPL -- that a wicket fell on the first ball of both the innings.

Earlier, Du Plessis slammed eight boundaries and two sixes en route to his third fifty this season and seized the initiative after he lost his opening partner Virat Kohli.

The South African veteran along with Rajat Patidar (48 in 38 balls; 4x4, 2x6) laid a solid foundation with a 105-run second wicket partnership off 73 balls.

But Hyderabad bowlers led by spinner Jagadeesha Suchith (2/30) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0/34) slowed things a bit in the middle overs before Dinesh Karthik gave a last-over flourish (25 runs) to prop up the total.

Making full use of a reprieve by Rahul Tripathi in the third ball of the final over, the Indian experienced wicketkeeper-batter went on to make a quickfire eight-ball 30 not out.

He smashed four sixes, three of them coming in succession followed by a boundary in the last over against Afghanistan debutant Fazalhaq Farooqi, en route to his entertaining cameo.

Hyderabad had their solitary moment of glory, the very first ball of the game when Kohli (0) got out for a third golden duck this season, sixth overall in IPL. This was also his second golden duck against the same team season.

Enduring his worst-ever IPL -- 216 runs from 12 innings at 19.6 -- Kohli had one soft dismissal off a Suchith half volley drifting onto his pads, and the star batter managed to flick it straight to Williamson at short midwicket.

It was all about RCB thereafter as Du Plessis and the young Patidar seized the momentum with their counter-attacking approach.

Hyderabad young speed merchant Umran Malik bowled back of the length on what was a slow pitch and the batters had all the time on offer to take him to cleaners in his first over that yielded 20 runs.

Well-settled Patidar however missed his fifty by two runs becoming Suchith's second victim, miscuing one in the 13th over.

DC are coming off a brilliant show against Sunrisers Hyderabad where they posted a total above 200 with the help of David Warner and Rovman Powell. It was a special knock from the Australia opener and although he missed out on a century, Powell was able to bring up his first fifty of IPL 2022.

CSK, on the other hand, are coming off yet another defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore with Devon Conway being the only positive from the match as he scored a gritty half century in 37 balls.

IPL 2022: Rajasthan Royals register comprehensive victory against Punjab Kings

David Warner has been one of the best batters in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years and continues to prove his mettle with each passing season. The Australian star is currently plying his trade for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and has enjoyed a fabulous run with the willow.

Warner is currently regarded as one of the greats in the IPL, however, he didn't have the most perfect start in the league. Warner was picked up by Delhi Capitals in the 2009 season when he made his debut in the IPL. However, he managed only seven appearances for the team in his first season and failed to impress.

Former DC skipper Virender Sehwag, who captained the side during Warner's initial years in IPL, recently revealed some shocking details from his debut stint in the T20 league. Sehwag claimed Warner had poor work ethics and partied more than he practiced during his first season with DC.

He also revealed how the Aussie star picked up fights with some of his teammates during the season and had to be dropped from the team. Though he was a good player, Sehwag said they needed to teach Warner a lesson considering his behaviour.

"I too have vented out my frustrations on a couple of players and David Warner was one of them. Because when he had joined newly, he partied more than believing in practice or playing matches. In the first year, he had a fight with a few players so we sent him back for the last two matches. So sometimes it happens that you keep someone out to teach them a lesson," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

“He was new so it was important to show him that you alone are not important for the team, others are too. There are other players who can play and win the match for the team too. And that's what happened. We kept him out of the team and won as well," he added.

Warner might not have had the ideal start to the proceedings in the IPL but went on to become one of the greatest batters to have played in the league. He was with Delhi Capitals from 2009 to 2013 before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014. Warner spent nine seasons with SRH from 2014 to 2021 before being released this year.

He was roped back in by DC at the IPL 2022 mega auction and has been a consistent performer for the team in the ongoing season with 356 runs in just 8 matches at an average of 59.33.

David Warner partied more than he practiced: Virender Sehwag recalls Aussie star's debut IPL season

In what comes as a reality check for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the e-auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL)'s media rights, the ratings of the league have taken a significant hit in the ongoing season. The viewership has gone down in IPL 2022 despite the introduction of two new teams in the tournament this season.

While BARC India, the television rating body in the country is yet to release official data related to IPL's viewership this season, several reports from media planners have suggested a huge dip in numbers in the ongoing edition of the tournament. As per reports, IPL's viewership went down by around 30% in the first three weeks of this season.

While it is a matter of concern for the BCCI ahead of the e-auction for IPL media rights for the 2023-27 cycle, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel believes the dip is not alarming and that it will not impact the media rights sale.

“There is a slight dip in viewership, but the numbers are not alarming. I don’t see them having any impact on the media rights sale," Patel was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

BCCI has already floated the tender for the sale of IPL media rights for the upcoming five-year cycle. The entire package which includes both TV and digital streaming rights along with other services has been prized at a whopping Rs 32,890 crore (USD 4.3 billion approx).

There are a number of big names in the fray including the likes of Amazon, Zee, Star and Reliance among others who are expected to battle it out for the IPL media rights. Patel believes the dip in the viewership this season is due to places opening up after the COVID-19 lockdown in the last two years which has allowed people to watch the games in groups at pubs and restaurants.

“Things have opened up and people are travelling compared to what we faced in the past two years,” Patel said. “We also believe a lot of people are now watching the games at restaurants, pubs and clubs. What we see is one connection and hundreds of people watching," said Patel.
