Rishabh Pant's DC release Shardul Thakur, Tim Seifert, retain core players ahead of IPL 2023 auction

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2023. Before the mini-auction, on December 23, all ten IPL teams released their list of retained and released players. Among the released players, CSK management has let go of Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa (who retired early this year), Chris Jordan, and the likes.

Releasing Bravo and Chris Jordan came as a surprise for many. Given IPL 2023 is set to see the return of the home-and-away format, CSK have retained a number of spin-bowling options (Maheesh Theekshana, Moeen, Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, etc.) whereas many of their superstar batters have also held on to their spots, such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu. They also have a lot of all-rounders including Moeen, Shivam Dube, Deepak Chahar, Moeen, Jadeja, Santner, Dwaine Pretorius, etc.

Here's what CSK CEO Kasi viswanathan said after the release of the list of their retained and retained players:

IPL 2023 Retention: 2016 winners SRH release skipper Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran

West Indies legend Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), hours ahead of the retention deadline on Tuesday (November 15). Pollard is all set to return to Mumbai Indians next season in a different role as he will serve as the batting coach for the franchise in IPL 2023.

One of the greatest servants of the franchise over the years, Pollard joined Mumbai Indians in 2010 and went on to become one of the legends in the IPL. He played an instrumental role in Mumbai Indians' all five title-winning campaigns under captain Rohit Sharma and has been one of the most consistent performers for the franchise.

The former West Indies skipper spent 12 seasons with Mumbai Indians amassing 3412 runs and picking up 69 wickets in 189 matches for the five-time champions. He also captained the team in regular skipper Rohit's absence on a few occasions and was part of the leadership group at the franchise.

This next chapter of my career is genuinely exciting and allows me to transition myself too from playing to coaching," Pollard said in his retirement note.

IPL retention day: From released players, live streaming to telecast - All you need to know

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed stupendous growth ever since its inception in 2008 and has transformed into one of the best sporting leagues in the world. Featuring some of the best cricketers from across the globe, IPL remains the benchmark when it comes to franchise cricket leagues across the globe.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been continuously working to improve the standards in the league to provide the fans with a better viewing experience. The Indian cricket board earned a whopping Rs 48,390 crore (US$6.2 billion) earlier this year from the tournament's broadcast deal for the next five years.

To cater to its audience and broadcasters, the IPL is set to expand further in the next five years. The number of matches is expected to go up to 94 per season with the BCCI also planning to finalise the schedule in advance to ensure all cricket boards can plan their calendar accordingly.

IPL's newly-appointed chairman Arun Dhumal said the board is looking to introduce various innovations to further enhance the league's reputation in the upcoming years.

"We are definitely looking at various innovations that can be brought to make it more fan-friendly. For those who are watching it on TV and those who are experiencing at the stadium, we want them to have a better experience," Dhumal was quoted as saying by PTI.

"If we can make the IPL schedule well in advance, people from all around the world can plan their travel accordingly. It should be a value-for-money experience for the fans," he added.

The BCCI president confirmed that the number of teams which was increased to ten this year, is expected to remain the same in the next five-year cycle, however, the number of matches per season will rise. IPL 2022 consisted of a total of 74 matches - 70 league games and 4 playoff matches. However, the number of matches is likely to rise by 20 to 94 by the fifth year.

"Teams will stay at 10 only. If you increase that, it becomes difficult to have the tournament in one go. We are looking at 74 games to begin with for the first two seasons, then 84 and if things permit maybe 94 in the fifth year of the media rights cycle, that itself would make it a long enough event," said Dhumal.

"We can't compare ourselves to football and other sporting leagues around the world as the requirement in cricket is totally different. You can't play on the same pitches for six months," he explained.

Currently, all male players contracted by the Indian cricket board are not allowed to take part in any T20 league overseas to maintain their exclusivity to the IPL. Despite growing calls over allowing Indian players to participate in foreign leagues, Dhumal said BCCI has no intention to change the rule anytime soon.

"This in principle is the decision of BCCI that our contracted players can't go and play for other leagues. As it is there is so much of cricket happening. Keeping in mind their overall well-being that decision has been taken. As of now, we stick to that decision," said Dhumal.

Also Read: Not Babar Azam! Ricky Ponting names key player for Pakistan ahead of semi-final vs New Zealand IPL's newly-appointed chairman Arun Dhumal said the board is looking to introduce various innovations to further enhance the league's reputation in the upcoming years. Also Read: 'He plays some shots where.....' - Ben Stokes on Suryakumar Yadav ahead of India-ENG T20 WC SF clash Currently, all male players contracted by the Indian cricket board are not allowed to take part in any T20 league overseas to maintain their exclusivity to the IPL. ×

IPL set to expand to 94 matches in 5 years, Indian players unlikely to be allowed to play overseas leagues

Captaining an IPL franchise isn't an easy job by any means. Over the years, many superstar cricketers have not been able to do justice to the role of captaincy. Many captains have been replaced after a few bad seasons. Mayank Agarwal is now the latest to join the list as Punjab Kings (PBKS) have appointed senior batter Shikhar Dhawan as the franchise's captain for IPL 2023.

IPL 2023: Another change in captaincy! Shikhar Dhawan replaces Mayank Agarwal as PBKS skipper

Several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have been focused on expanding their bases globally and have been buying teams across different T20 leagues around the world. While the owners of the likes of Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders have bought teams in UAE's International League T20 (ILT20), all six teams in South Africa's SA20 league have also been purchased by IPL team owners.

With IPL team owners exploring options around the globe, they have also been hoping to lure the best players from around the world to play for their franchises throughout the year. IPL team owners are looking to tie down some of the top cricketers to year-long contracts for them to be available for selection in all T20 leagues.

As per a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, some IPL teams recently held informal talks with the players through their respective management to find out how much will it take to convince the players to ditch their Cricket Australia (CA) contracts and agree to be a T20 globe-trotter with their IPL franchise.

If a player agrees to sign a year-long deal with an IPL franchise, it will mean he will have to commit to playing for all teams under the franchise's umbrella in different T20 leagues around the world and reduce his playing time for the national team. A top Australian player has reportedly been offered around AUS$5 million (Approx 3.2 million USD) to sign a year-long contract by an IPL team.

The sum of AUS$5 million is more than double what Australia's Test captain Pat Cummins is paid for his Test and ODI contracts combined by Cricket Australia. As per the report, the likes of Cummins, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell among others can be highly sought-after by the IPL teams.

However, the players reportedly currently do not have any interest in signing year-long contracts with IPL franchises, however, sources told the Sydney Morning Herald said things could change in the next couple of years, especially with players who will be approaching their retirement.

Signing such contracts would also mean the payers will have to play less amount of cricket round the year which will provide them much-needed breaks to spend time with their families while making more money. It remains to be seen if more top overseas players will be approached with such contracts and will commit to them in the future.

IPL franchises offered select Australian players lucrative 12-month contracts – Report

In a historic decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (October 18) gave approval to the Women's Indian Premier League (IPL). The tournament is all set to be conducted from 2023 after the official green light from the Indian cricket board. The tournament which has been under consideration for a long time now is all set to shape up next year.

BCCI held its 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai where former India all-rounder Roger Binny officially replaced Sourav Ganguly as the new president of the board. The new team of BCCI office-bearers also formally took charge in the meeting where several key decisions were made.

“The General Body approved to conduct the Women’s Indian Premier League,” BCCI said in a release after the AGM.

Five teams will be part of the competition to start with and a decision on how the teams will be sold has not been made yet. The five teams can be picked zone-wise or on the basis of individual cities like in the men's IPL. The tournament is likely to be held in March next year after the Women's T20 World Cup.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, each team will have a roster of 18 players and will be allowed to pick a maximum of only six overseas players in their squad. However, unlike the men's IP where not more than four foreigners are allowed in the playing XI, five overseas players can be part of the playing XI in the Women's IPL.

The BCCI has reportedly also made it mandatory for each team in the Women's IPL to have at least one overseas player from an associate nation. The tournament is likely to have a total of 22 matches and the final call on the schedule and venue will be taken later.

BCCI approves women's IPL, first edition to be staged in 2023

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a mini player auction ahead of the start of the new season in 2023. Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final last season to lift their maiden IPL trophy in their debut campaign after successfully executing their strategies in the mega auction last year.

As per a report in the Times of India, the 2023 IPL auction is set to be held on December 16 in Bengaluru. IPL is also set to return to the traditional home and away format from next season and is likely to be staged entirely in India like last season.

Unlike the mega auction last time around where the eight old teams were asked to retain a maximum of four players, there will be no such cap on the ten teams this time. All ten teams can release and retain as many players as they like considering the budget in mind.

The overall purse of each team will be increased by Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) from Rs 90 crore (INR 900 million) to Rs 95 crore (INR 950 million) for the 2023 mini-auction. If a team decides to release none of their players, they will be left with the amount they had saved in the mega auction last year and the additional Rs 5 crore allotted to them.

Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals were all left with only Rs 1 million after the mega auction last year while Lucknow Super Giants exhausted their entire purse.

Despite it being a mini auction, a number of big names are expected to go under the hammer ahead of the IPL 2023 season. The likes of England all-rounder Sam Curran and Cameron Green among others can headline the show with several big stars released by the franchises also expected to be in the fray.

These teams will have to decide whether they want to retain their player or the replacement player, or both while keeping the squad limit in mind. All ten teams will have to submit their final list of retained and released players to the BCCI by November 15.

Former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev came up with a blunt response when asked about how players should deal with the extensive pressure in modern-day cricket. The 1983 World Cup-winning captain said those who feel too much pressure when playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) should not play in the competition.

The legendary all-rounder is regarded as one of the greatest of all time. He inspired a generation of cricketers by leading India to a memorable maiden World Cup triumph in 1983 and has since been a role model for many. Kapil said he often comes across the word 'pressure' when hearing debates around cricket on TV and has just one piece of advice for the players.

"I hear a lot of times on TV that there's a lot of pressure on players to play in the IPL. Then I only say one thing, don't play," said Kapil.

The former India captain went on to make a big statement as he said he can't understand 'American terms' like pressure and depression. Kapil believes if a player has passion for the game, he or she should never feel the pressure of performing on the field.

Don't play in IPL If you feel pressure: Kapil Dev's blunt response on how to deal with pressure in cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to introduce the 'impact player' rule in the domestic T20 tournaments in the country, including the Indian Premier League (IPL). The rule is set to be tested for the first time in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy which gets underway on October 11 before it can be applied in the IPL.

As per the rule, a team can replace one member of their playing XI with an 'impact' substitute during a match in order to improve their chances of winning the contest. The impact sub can either be a batter or a bowler and can help his team change the game. The BCCI wants to first implement the rule in domestic tournaments for the players and team officials to get used to it.

The Indian cricket board believes the rule will further help in making T20s more attractive and interesting amid the rising popularity of the game.

“With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint," the BCCI said in a circular sent to all state associations.

“Teams need to identify playing XI and 4 substitutes at the time of the toss. Out of the 4 substitutes named in the team sheet, only one of the players can be used as an Impact player,” it added.

All you need to know about the Impact Player rule

An impact player can be the 12th or 13th name on the team sheet alongside the original playing XI. The impact player can be introduced after the 10th over of the first innings and can replace only a player, who hasn't batted or is yet to bowl more than a single over.

The replacement player can bowl his full quota of four overs even if the player he replaced has already bowled one over. However, the impact player cannot bowl four overs if the match is interrupted by rain and the overs are reduced per innings. The impact player can be introduced only before the completion of the 14th over of the innings.

It is not mandatory for a team to use impact players during a game. However, if a team plans to introduce one, the captain, head coach or manager will have to inform the on-field officials about the introduction of the impact player. Once replaced by an impact player, the other player cannot take part in the rest of the game or come in as a substitute fielder.

“Player who is replaced by an Impact Player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder. If a player gets injured while fielding in mid over, the current playing condition prevails under 24.1 – substitute fielders,” stated the circular shared by BCCI.

“After the introduction of Impact Player in game, a player can bat and may bowl a full allotment of 4 overs in an uninterrupted innings. In case a player gets retired hurt, Impact Player can be introduced only at the end of the over in progress and is eligible to bat. In any situation, only 11 players can bat," it added further.

No impact players can be used if the start of the match is delayed and the overs are reduced to less than ten per innings. The rule can be a game-changer going ahead as teams can use it to their benefit by introducing an 'impact player' when in trouble while batting or bowling.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to introduce the 'impact player' rule in the domestic T20 tournaments in the country, including the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Is Shubman Gill leaving Gujarat Titans? IPL franchise's cryptic tweet leaves fans guessing

Former India batter Suresh Raina has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The veteran batter will not feature in the domestic tournaments for his state side Uttar Pradesh and will also not play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) going forward. Raina took to Twitter to announce his decision while thanking his former IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the UP State Cricket Association.

Raina, who remains one of the best Indian players to have graced the IPL, went unsold at the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year after none of the franchises showed any interest in roping in the 35-year-old. Raina was part of the CSK squad in their title-winning campaign in 2021 before being released by the franchise.

I would like to thank @BCCI, @UPCACricket, @ChennaiIPL, @ShuklaRajiv sir & all my fans for their support and unwavering faith in my abilities," Raina wrote in a tweet.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have slammed the reports of Mayank Agarwal's sacking as captain after rumours went viral on Tuesday (August 23) that the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise was set to replace the Team India star. Agarwal was appointed as the captain of the side ahead of IPL 2022.

Punjab Kings were being touted as one of the strong contenders for playoffs ahead of IPL 2022 after managing to assemble a star-studded squad in the mega auction earlier this year. They roped in the likes of Liam Livingstone, Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada and Jonny Bairstow among others but failed to make it to the playoffs once again.

Agarwal was handed over the captaincy baton after KL Rahul moved to the Lucknow Super Giants. However, the Indian batter had an underwhelming season with the bat as he could manage only 196 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 122.50 and a shambolic average of 16.33.

The schedules of the 2025 editions of the Pakistan Super League and the Indian Premier League in the summer are destined to clash with each other. This is because of Pakistan's packed home season as hosts of that year's edition of the ICC Champions Trophy.

The IPL's action kicks off in March and goes on for two and a half months to end at the beginning of June. Although the PSL usually commences at the beginning of the year in January and goes on till February, the Pakistan Cricket Board was forced to postpone the tournament to March and May due to their obligations as the host of the Champions Trophy in February 2025.

The 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy marks the first time the international governing body has moved to host a tournament in the country after 30 year long hiatus. Safety and security issues in the country were the main reasons why Pakistan lost the right to host international tournaments on home soil during the past three Future Tours and Programme Cycles (FTP).

However, they have seemingly earned the trust of the cricketing community as they are currently hurtling towards an extremely busy and packed season of international cricket. Pakistan is set to compete in 27 T20Is, 26 ODIs and 13 Tests on home soil in addition to the ICC Champions Trophy.

Pakistan Super League to clash with IPL in 2025, here's why

Former England cricket team captain Nasser Hussain believes the game would lose something fundamental if T20 franchise cricket is the only option the fans have in the future. Hussain has highlighted the glaring issues in the current trend of players prioritising T20 franchise cricket over international formats and believes Test and ODIs can't be compromised at any cost.

Cricket is currently facing an existential crisis as the debate has intensified over the packed schedule of cricketers, who play all three formats of the game. Several former cricketers and experts believe franchise T20 cricket is the future and that bilateral ODIs should be done away with to reduce the workload of players.

The likes of Ben Stokes and Quinton de Kock giving up one international format to prolong their careers have also put the spotlight on the schedule of cricketers. However, with New Zealand pacer Trent Boult's decision to opt out of a central contract and play limited international cricket to spend time with his family, the concerns over the future of Tests and ODIs have grown.

Boult has opted for the decision to spend time with his family and play less international cricket. A decision which might have been taken considering the fact he can still make millions playing lesser round the year in a couple of T20 leagues around the globe. He might not be the last international star to do so as many might opt to play in T20 franchise leagues for lucrative contracts while compromising on international cricket in the future.

Hussain has strong views on the current trend of players preferring franchise leagues ike the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), Caribbean Premier League and Pakistan Super League over international cricket as the former England captain believes 'everything needs to be in proportion' for the brighter future of the game in the years to come.

"My overall view, though, is that everything needs to be in proportion. For me, first-class county cricket is the starter, Test cricket the main course, and all the white-ball stuff the pudding — enjoyable and moreish," Hussain wrote in his column for Daily Mail.

"But — and it’s a big but — you don’t want to be eating pudding every night of the week for the rest of your life. And that’s where the game has an issue," he wrote further.

Hussian expressed his concerns over white-ball cricket getting hold of players at the start of their careers and making superstars out of them for their little 10-12-ball cameos in T20s. Hussain drew a comparison between veteran Kieron Pollard, who has retired from international cricket but continues to play T20 leagues and South African youngster Tristan Stubbs - who recently slammed a stunning 10-ball 27 for his team in The Hundred and grabbed the limelight.

"One area of concern is the extent to which white-ball cricket is now getting hold of players at the start of their careers. It used to be the case that older players would ride off into the T20 sunset, and make a bit of cash before calling it a day," wrote Hussain.

"Ten balls and four sixes are all you need to become box-office, and attract the IPL owners. If you’re starting your career now, there is a direct route — if you’re talented enough — to making a million. I don’t blame the players for choosing it," he added.

Former New Zealand national cricket team star Ross Taylor recently sent the cricketing community into a frenzy by levelling allegations of getting slapped by one of the owners of his previous IPL team, Rajasthan Royals. His claims were recently addressed by a BCCI official, who said that he was unaware of the incident.

Taylor offered fans some insight into the time he was slapped by one of the owners of the franchise in his recently released autobiography, 'Black & White.' He recalled the time he had gotten out for duck during a steep chase against Kings XI Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings.

He subsequently revealed that the team's owners did not take too kindly to the result, slapping him across the face 'three or four times'. He admitted that although the owner played it off as a joke and the slaps weren't particularly hard, it did not seem like the kind of thing that would take place in any other professional sporting environment across the world.

In a recent interaction with the media, a representative of the BCCI addressed these claims, admitting that he had no knowledge of this incident ever taking place. It is essential to note that the comment was seemingly made in haste as the BCCI rep was preoccupied with travel. "I am on the road travelling now so I do not know exactly what you are talking about," said the official.

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar had recently responded to Adam Gilchrist's plea of allowing Indian players to take part in the overseas cricket leagues. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a strict stance when it comes to Indian players taking part in overseas leagues as active players are barred from doing so.

Only retired players can venture overseas and play T20 leagues around the globe. While the Indian Premier League (IPL) features players from across the globe excluding only Pakistan, Indian stars are not allowed to play overseas leagues like the Big Bash League, The Hundred and the Caribbean Premier League among others.

Former Australia wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist had recently urged the BCCI to allow the Indian players to take part in overseas leagues. Gilchrist, who is regarded as one of the best wicket-keeper batters of all time, had also expressed his concerns over IPL teams buying franchises in different T20 leagues around the globe.

"Some overseas former players have said that the Indian players should be allowed to play the Big Bash or the Hundred. Basically, they want their leagues to have more sponsorship etc. They are concerned about their cricket, which is totally understandable. But when Indian cricket looks to protect its cricket by ensuring that their players stay fresh for their matches and thus restricting them from playing overseas, that is not acceptable to the guys from the ‘old powers,’ Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

The former India captain also slammed the hypocrisy when it comes to the recruitment of the coaching staff in overseas leagues pointing out how IPL at one point had a host of support staff from Australia across various teams but when it comes to overseas leagues like BBL and The Hundred, the sight of an Indian in the coaching setup is a rarity.

"They are talking only about the Indian players being made available for their country’s leagues but not the support staff or others who also can do a wonderful job as the cricketing world has found out over the last half dozen years or so. The IPL, for a while, ran the danger of being called the Australian league with not just the Aussie players dominating the composition of the teams but the coaches and support staff too. It’s never a two-way street for the ‘old powers’ of cricket," he asserted.

Kings XI Punjab are one of the three franchises – others being Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore – to have never won the coveted IPL trophy. While they have produced some great performances in the past, the Punjab franchise always fell short of ultimate glory. However, under the new name and logo, the franchise would be hoping to break the deadlock and lift the IPL trophy in the 2021 edition.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the 'old powers' of cricket, Australia and England, over their criticism of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar lashed out at those accusing the IPL for being the disruptor of the cricketing calendar and said the likes of England and Australia should mind their own business and not interfere in India's cricketing matters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been targeted by many of late over the potential clash of the schedules of the UAE and the South Africa T20 leagues with Australia's Big Bash League and England's The Hundred. BCCI is at the centre of criticism as several IPL owners have bought teams in both the UAE and the South African T20 leagues.

Three teams that will be part of the UAE's ILT20 league have been bought by the owners of IPL franchises, while all six teams that will participate in the South Africa T20 league have also been purchased by IPL team owners. With IPL's influence growing globally, the league has been blamed for disrupting the cricket calendar.

Gavaskar has slammed those criticising the Indian Premier League and said the likes of Australia and England should look after their own cricketing interests and not interfere in India's matters as both have Big Bash and The Hundred have their own separate windows in the annual cricket calendar.

"So, by all means, look after your cricket interests but hey please don’t interfere in ours and tell us what to do. We will look after our interests and do it better than what you tell us to do," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar slamming Australia and England.

Gavaskar suggested both England and Australia cricket boards are unhappy that the clash of schedules of the various T20 leagues will see some top players from around the globe opting to play in UAE and South Africa instead of heading to the Big Bash or The Hundred.

"It’s been amusing to read that the Indian Premier League is once again seen as a disruptor of the cricketing calendar of other international teams. The moment the news about the South African T20 league and the UAE T20 league came out, the ‘old powers’ started squirming and got their apologists to have a go at the IPL," Gavaskar wrote in his column.

"The IPL has got a 75-day window in the international calendar and that’s simply because, thankfully, there are some administrators who can read the tea leaves and know it’s better to let their players play in the cricket world’s richest league than hold them back with some international commitments. The England & Wales Cricket Board has created a window for its showpiece event The Hundred when the England team don’t play any international matches."

"The Australians, too, have scheduled their Big Bash when their contracted players will be available to play. But it’s worrying them that the UAE and the South African T20 leagues are scheduled around the same time and there’s the danger of some of their players opting to play there instead of the Big Bash," he added.

"Some overseas former players have said that the Indian players should be allowed to play the Big Bash or the Hundred. Basically, they want their leagues to have more sponsorship etc. They are concerned about their cricket, which is totally understandable," Gavaskar wrote.

"But when Indian cricket looks to protect its cricket by ensuring that their players stay fresh for their matches and thus restricting them from playing overseas, that is not acceptable to the guys from the ‘old powers’," the former India captain added.

IPL is currently the biggest and the most expensive T20 league in the world. It is arguably the best domestic cricket tournament in the world attracting top talent from across the globe. The cash-rich league also is the strongest financially and offers players the highest salary among the top T20 leagues in the world.

'Don't tell us what to do': Sunil Gavaskar lashes out at 'old powers' England, Australia for IPL criticism

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore has revealed Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are open to the idea of tying down the best T20 players around the world on an annual 12-month contract. IPL currently has ten teams and a number of franchises have their presence in T20 leagues outside of India as well.

While IPL teams currently offer contracts to the players for only a certain amount of time for the season, they are exploring the idea of contracting players for full 12 months in a year. KKR is one of the IPL franchises with a global presence as the Knight Riders currently have four teams under their belt.

The Shah Rukh Khan co-owned KKR also owns the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and a team each in the International League T20 (UAE), and Major League Cricket (USA) which are set to be launched next year. Contracting players for 12 months will allow the franchises to use them in their teams across different leagues around the globe.

Mysore believes it will be 'nirvana' for IPL franchises if they can have a certain amount of contracted players who they can use for their teams in different leagues as it will help them enhance their brand and further increase their fan base across the globe.

While KKR have 4 franchises under their umbrella, recently, the owners of six different IPL teams purchased a franchise each in South Africa's upcoming T20 league to expand their presence globally. Mysore believes offering annual contracts will also provide more opportunities to top cricketers.

"If it happened that way at some point in the future, that'd be great. What we want to create is a common platform, a system, and a culture that allows us to participate around the year - enhancing our brand, building our fan base, and providing opportunities for cricketers around the world. And in the process, you build hopefully a successful business around it," Mysore told Telegraph.co.uk in an interview.

"In an ideal world, sure—because that gives us the opportunity to make our vision and our strategy even stronger. If we were able to have X number of contracted players and were able to use them all in different leagues, I think that would be nirvana. Hopefully, someday it will happen. I wouldn't be surprised if it did," he added.

BCCI open to the idea of players paying in overseas T20 leagues: Mysore

While IPL franchises are aiming to expand their presence globally and own franchises in different T20 leagues overseas, there lies a major hurdle in their way. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still doesn't allow active Indian players to take part in overseas leagues. Only retired Indian cricketers or those not active in either domestic or international cricket are allowed to play in the leagues overseas.

However, Mysore revealed that BCCI is open to the idea of letting Indian players ply their trade in T20 leagues outside the country. The KKR CEO said BCCI is working to figure out what will work in the best interest of Indian cricket.

"Certainly, we're hoping that will happen at some point in the future. When we broach this topic, the BCCI say, 'Yeah, we have to figure out how to do something'," said Mysore.

"I think they have an open mind. But they need to figure out what's best for Indian cricket and for Indian players. That's how they would be thinking about it, which is fair enough. Some very good minds would be applying their minds to this idea. If it all comes together, it'd be terrific," he added.

The growing popularity of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the debate over the future of bilateral ODI cricket make former India head coach Ravi Shastri believe there is room for two IPL seasons in a year. Shastri feels IPL can be expanded two seasons in a year and the number of teams in the competition can be increased if there is a demand for more matches.

Shastri had recently said the overs in the ODI format should be reduced from 50 to 40 to make the format interesting. The debate over reducing bilateral cricket is intensifying and the issue has caught the attention of many ever since England all-rounder Ben Stokes' shock retirement from ODI cricket.

Several former cricketers and experts believe the future of ODI cricket is bleak and the format is losing its sheen. Many believe bilateral cricket should also be reduced keeping the packed schedule in mind as it has become difficult for three-format players to manage their workload.

BCCI has already approved a 10-week window from ICC for the IPL and is in discussion with the international body to have an exclusive window for the league. Shastri said he won't be surprised at all if bilateral cricket is reduced to have two seasons of IPL in a year.

"I think you might have two (IPL) seasons. I wouldn't be surprised at all. If bilateral cricket is reduced, you might well have a shorter format of the IPL in the latter half of the year, more like a World Cup format with a knockout that decides the winner," Shastri said on the Vaughany and Tuffers Cricket Club Podcast.

"The full competition with 10 teams could go to 12 teams in the future with the schedule stretching from one-and-a-half to two months," he added.

The former India head coach believes IPL's rise is proof that T20 cricket is the way forward and the expansion of the league will only result in the betterment of the game as IPL is now an industry in itself. Shastri feels franchise cricket should be encouraged over bilaterals as far as T20s are concerned with emphasis on having World Cup as the major event.

"I would be a little careful of the number of bilateral splits, especially in T20 cricket. There's a lot of franchise cricket that can be encouraged, whichever country it's in - India, West Indies, or Pakistan. You play fewer bilaterals and then you get together for the World Cups. So the emphasis on ICC World Cup events has become paramount. Then people look forward to them," said Shastri.

'I wouldn't be surprised': Former India head coach Ravi Shastri on two IPL seasons in a year

India's current head coach Rahul Dravid remains a big name in world cricket. The legendary cricketer had a highly successful career as one of India's main batters during his playing days, from 1996-2021. Dravid amassed 13,288 Test and 10,889 ODI runs and is now being looked upon as a coach who can change India's fortunes and help them end their ICC-title drought since 2013.

During Dravid's playing days, he was known to be a stylish batter who strived hard for his runs in the middle. The former Indian captain could also play the aggressor's role and, hence, was a versatile batter. His on-field demeanour was that of a calm and composed player, who didn't lose his cool very often on the 22-yard cricket strip. Nonetheless, whenever Dravid got angry, it made heads turn. During IPL 2013's Qualifier 2 match, between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Dravid gave an earful to Mitchell Johnson.

Dravid had hit Johnson for a four, as RR opted to bat first, when the Aussie speedster said something to 'The Wall'. While the Indian star batter hit him for another four, on the very next delivery, Dravid responded to Johnson and their verbal spat caught everyone's attention. Here's the throwback video:

While Dravid started the innings on fire, he departed for a 37-ball 43. Stuart Binny's quickfire 17-ball 27 propelled the one-time winners to a decent score, i.e. 165 for 6. However, it wasn't enough as Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai chased down the target on the penultimate ball with four wickets in hand. Dwayne Smith top-scored for MI, with a 44-ball 62, but Harbhajan Singh ended as the Player-of-the-Match for his 3 for 23.

Indian players might finally get a chance to play in overseas T20 leagues as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly open to the idea of letting players take part in tournaments abroad. Over the years, BCCI has maintained a strict policy of not allowing active Indian players to take part in overseas leagues. However, their firm stance is expected to change.

As per a report in Insidesport, several IPL teams have urged the BCCI to consider the idea of letting Indian players ply their trade in overseas leagues amid IPL's increasing influence in other countries. Recently, the existing owners of IPL franchises purchased all six teams in the South Africa T20 league.

The owners of IPL franchises Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have reportedly bought six teams in the South Africa T20 league. Some of these teams have requested the BCCI to allow Indian players to be part of overseas leagues in order to strengthen their respective squads in the future.

While BCCI is now open to the idea, the Indian cricket board will take the final decision on the matter in its upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).

"Few IPL teams with a presence in leagues abroad have requested the BCCI to allow Indian players. But we have to discuss this at the AGM before coming to any conclusion. It is a contentious issue as IPL is successful because of the exclusivity it provides. Definitely, we won’t lose that. As for Indian players playing abroad, it may happen due to growing number of franchise leagues," a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.

While there is pressure on the BCCI from IPL teams, the board is aware of the exclusivity popular Indian cricketers provide to the IPL. As no active Indian cricketers are allowed to take part in overseas leagues, fans only get to witness them in action during the IPL season.

As per the report, even if BCCI allows Indian players to play in overseas leagues, the board is certain to keep the popular and high-profile names exclusive for the IPL. The BCCI official said the board will provide relaxation to those players who aren't popular or are in the reckoning for Team India.

"It’s good to see the growing footprints of IPL all over the world. But we should not forget that it is because of the Indian players that the IPL is so popular. It is the only league where fans can watch them play. If they start playing in other leagues, it will only increase the viewers’ fatigue. It won’t be exclusive anymore. But there is room for relaxation when it comes to not so popular players or cricketers who are not in the reckoning," the BCCI official added.

Indian players might finally get a chance to play in overseas T20 leagues as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly open to the idea of letting players take part in tournaments abroad.

Also Read: From Dhawan to Bumrah: 7 captains Rahul Dravid has worked with as India's head coach While BCCI is now open to the idea, the Indian cricket board will take the final decision on the matter in its upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). The RP Sanjeev Goenka group, which paid a record sum of Rs 7090 crore to buy the Lucknow IPL franchise late last year, picked up the Durban team, while Rajasthan Royals bought the Paarl team. Pretoria has been taken by Jindal South West Sports, which is headed by Parth Jindal, co-owner of the Delhi Capitals in IPL.

The league will be run by Cricket South Africa in partnership with television broadcaster SuperSport. The board is expected to make a formal announcement of the new owners and the cities they will represent once the paperwork is completed.

Notably, this new tournament is CSA`s third attempt to start a sustainable franchise-based T20 league after the failure of Global League T20 and the Mzansi Super League due to various reasons.

The new T20 league was set up as "top priority" by the CSA, which has risked South Africa`s direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup after they forfeit a three-match ODI series in Australia, last week.

As per CSA, it had made the radical move for the "long-term sustainability of the game" in South Africa. Going ahead, the board will not organise any international cricket in South Africa after the New Year Test to create a window for the T20 league.

"This new league promises to make a significant investment into both professional cricket and development in South Africa, along with a positive socio-economic and tourism injection into the country," CSA`s chief executive officer Pholetsi Moseki said.

Mastermind behind fake IPL matches in Gujarat nabbed: Report

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the Indian players for opting for rest during national team duty and not considering taking a break while representing their respective franchises during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar's comments have come at a time when the Indian team management and the selectors have been facing the ire for constantly resting senior players who are struggling with their form.

There have also been reports that some senior players asked to be rested from the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies. Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli among others have already been rested for the ODI series against West Indies and it remains to be seen if they will feature in the T20 squad for the tour of the Caribbean.

Gavaskar has questioned players' commitment to playing for their country amid the resting policy. The Indian legend said he is absolutely against players taking a rest from international cricket and questioned why don't the senior Indian players take a break during the IPL instead of resting when playing for the country.

"I am absolutely against players taking rest. You can't rest in IPL, but you want to rest when you play for India? Test cricket takes a toll on your mind and body. But T20s is all about 20 overs of bowling and batting which shouldn't be difficult. If they want to take a rest, they can, but then all the guarantees should be taken away from them. The board needs to draw a line if they want to be professional," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

Both Kohli and Rohit have not enjoyed the best of form and have struggled to score runs consistently in the last few months. The duo had a shambolic campaign in IPL 2022 for their respective teams and are yet to notch up a big knock for the Indian team and have failed in the last few games.

With the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia just a few months away from getting underway, both Kohli and Rohit's form has become a huge concern for the Indian team. Many have even questioned Kohli's spot in India's T20I side suggesting that the senior batter should be dropped from the team.

You can't rest in IPL but want to rest when you play for India: Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India stars

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the best T20 tournaments in the world and enjoys massive popularity across the globe. While high-quality cricketing action on display attracts fans from across the globe, IPL also allows punters from around the world to place bets during matches. While there are several legal betting apps online, several fake betting rackets have been busted in India over the years.

The latest fake IPL betting racket was busted in Gujarat's Mehsana district where fake matches were staged at a remote farm in Molipur Village to dupe punters from Russia. HD cameras, fake crowd noise and umpires were used during the matches with players wearing the jerseys of IPL teams to pull off a near-perfect con job.

As per a report in the Times of India, the fake IPL had almost reached the quarter-finals stage before the racket was busted by the local police. The report further states that the matches used to be broadcast live on YouTube and bets were accepted from punters from three Russian cities - Moscow, Voronezh and Tver.

While the players reportedly worse jerseys worn by the actual IPL teams, walkie-talkies were also used during the matches to make it look like the real tournament. As per the report, a commentator was also hired to mimic famous cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle during the matches.

As per the Times of India, the Mehsana police arrested four people, who were involved in the fake IPL racket and are currently investigating the matter. As per Bhavesh Rathod, the SOG PI, Mehsana, a person named Shoeb Davda was helping in taking bets and running the fake IPL after returning to India from Russia where he worked at a pub famous for taking bets.

However, Shoeb claimed he was not the mastermind behind the whole racket and revealed he had met a person named Asif Mohammed while working in the Russian pub and it was Asif who executed the whole plan. Soheb helped Asif in staging the fake tournament in India by hiring 21 farm labours as players for Rs 400 per day. He also hired cameramen, and a commentator and bought IPL jerseys for the players to help Asif in pulling off the fake IPL.

"Shoeb hired the farm of Ghulam Masih and installed halogen lights there. He readied 21 farm labourers, promising them Rs 400 per match. Next, he hired cameramen and bought T-shirts of IPL teams. When the cops were tipped-off, they felt something was wrong," Rathod was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

"Shoeb would take bets. He would instruct Kolu, the umpire, to signal fours and sixes. Kolu would alert the batsman and the baller. Next, the baller would deliver a slow ball, enabling the batsman to hit it for a four or a six.

"The cameramen would pan the cameras towards the sky to show that the ball was nowhere in sight. Next, they would zoom into the umpire who would signal a six. The cameramen ensured there were no zoom-outs lest the farm became visible," he added.

As per the report, the first instalment of bets from Russia amounting to Rs 3 lakh (Around USD 3,778) had already been received by the group running the fake betting racket in the name of IPL. The fake IPL racket has been busted just weeks after the 15th edition of the tournament was concluded in India with Gujarat Titans lifting the title in their maiden season.
