The forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to commence on March 31 at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. The opening game will see the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) take on MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK).&nbsp;

Just like every other season, the upcoming IPL edition is also keenly awaited. It will be the 16th edition of the tournament, which kicked off in 2008. Several records have been broken in the tournament since it's inception. Many captains have led the existing and now-defunct teams whereas only a handful of them have tasted success by winning the IPL championship.&nbsp;

Apart from only one top franchise, every other team -- including only those who have been a part of the tournament since 2008 or more than five seasons -- have had an overseas captain for a brief or significant period. However, CSK is the only team to not have had a foreign captain in their rich history.

IPL 2023: ARCH-RIVALS to face-off in HISTORIC TIE! CSK to host MI in 1000th game of mega event

Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a winless run in their first five games in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 before they beat Uttar Pradesh Warriorz (UPW) by five wickets on Wednesday (March 15). While Mandhana &amp; Co. remain alive in the race to enter the playoffs, they only have a slim chance. Nonetheless, they will be much relieved having earned their maiden win in WPL 2023.&nbsp;

Ahead of their clash versus UPW, the RCB camp's mood was uplifted by Indian star Virat Kohli. Kohli, who represents the RCB in IPL, is in Mumbai -- where WPL is being held -- to take part in Hardik Pandya-led India's first ODI versus Australia, on March 17. Thus, he took some time out of his schedule and gave a pep talk to the Mandhana-led RCB.&nbsp;

In a video shared by the RCB’s official Twitter handle, on Thursday (March 16), Virat shared some words of wisdom and said, "I’ve been playing IPL for 15 years. And I haven’t won it yet. But that doesn’t stop me from being excited every year. That’s all I can do. That’s the effort I can put into every game and every tournament that I play. If we win, great. If we don’t, then I am not going to go to my grave thinking that if only I had won an IPL, I would be a happy man. It doesn’t happen like that. So always think about the opportunity that you have rather than how bad it is right now."

He added, "There is always a flip side to it, and it could always be worse than this. And the fact that we haven’t won the IPL, but I still feel that we have the best fans in the world. Only because we were always committed to every game that we played for RCB. That has been the most special thing for our fans. There’s no guarantee of giving you a cup every year, but there’s a guarantee of giving your 110% every year, and that’s all you can strive to do."

Kohli's talk motivated the entire bunch as Mandhana-led RCB defeated UPW on Wednesday evening in a low-scoring game at the&nbsp;Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai. Opting to bowl first, Bengaluru dismissed UPW for 135 in 19.3 overs with&nbsp;Ellyse Perry (3 for 16), Sophie Devine (2 for 23) and Asha Shobana (2 for 27) shining with the ball. For UP, Grace Harris top-scored with a 32-ball 46 before RCB rode on Kanika Ahuja's 30-ball 46 and Richa Ghosh's 32-ball 31* to win by five wickets with two overs to spare.

RCB remain alive to end in the top three (although they can, at maximum, only settle for the third position) and enter the knockouts. They need to win their remaining two games and also hope for other results to favour them.

The team took to their official Twitter handle to reveal the jersey through a photoshoot featuring Indian international stars like batter Mayank Agarwal, pace sensation Umran Malik and all-rounder Washington Sundar.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will start their IPL 2023 campaign on April 2 against Rajasthan Royals at their home ground, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Last season, SRH finished in the eighth position in the points table with six wins and eight losses and a total of 12 points. They failed to qualify for playoffs.

Recently, South Africa batter Aiden Markram was named the captain for Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2023.
The 28-year-old Protea is not new to the leadership role having led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural SA20 title earlier this month. He played a crucial role in the side's SA20 triumph, ending the season as the third-highest run-scorer.

Sunrisers had to decide on the leadership role after releasing New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson prior to the IPL mini-auction in December last year. The batter struggled for form in the 2022 IPL and scored 216 runs in his 13 innings.

However, the Sunrisers Hyderabad management went ahead with Markram given his success in the SA20 league.

In December last year, the management named West Indies legend Brian Lara as the head coach ahead of the IPL auction. They made some big purchases in the auction with Harry Brook being the heftiest buy.

IPL 2023: Aiden Markram's Sunrisers Hyderabad unveil new kit for upcoming season - Watch video

Cricket fans are gearing up for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31. The opening game will see defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) take on MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. The forthcoming edition will have all the eyes on Dhoni who might be playing his last IPL season. After CSK ended at the ninth spot in the points table in IPL 2022, they will be desperate to turn the tides this time around in what can be the last season of Dhoni in IPL history.

Ahead of the IPL season opener, CSK's former star player Suresh Raina picked his choice as Dhoni's successor. While many believe Ben Stokes is likely to take over from Dhoni ever since he was roped in by the Yellow Army in the last auction, Raina named Ruturaj Gaikwad as Dhoni's successor.&nbsp;

In an interaction with Jio Cinema, Raina said, "Abhi Mahi bhai hain, I really want Ruturaj Gaikwad to nurture around him. I think Mahi bhai has a good brain. Definitely, he is around the boys. So yeah, I would say, hopefully, Ruturaj Gaikwad. He has done really well this season and I want him to do well for the country as well as Chennai Super Kings. Rutu, good luck for your captaincy brother!"

Gaikwad has been part of CSK since IPL 2020 and has amassed&nbsp;1,207 runs with 1 ton and 11 half-centuries at a strike rate of&nbsp;130.35.

Speaking on the sidelines of Legends League Cricket (LLC) 2023, Raina also spoke at length on Dhoni's IPL future. While he wants Dhoni to take part in the LLC as well, Chinna Thala Raina feels the former Indian captain can play in IPL 2024 as well.&nbsp;"I wish he could, but we’ll have to see what his commitments are. He can play the IPL next year as well, you never know."

Raina reflected on CSK's chance and added, "It may be a little challenging since him (Dhoni)&nbsp;and (Ambati) Rayudu haven’t played the tournament for one year. I think the team is quite strong, a lot of young players are coming through the ranks. (Ruturaj) Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja), (Ben) Stokes, Deepak Chahar…and there are more young and dynamic players on that side. Let’s see how they play."

I think the team is quite strong, a lot of young players are coming through the ranks. (Ruturaj) Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja), (Ben) Stokes, Deepak Chahar…and there are more young and dynamic players on that side. Let’s see how they play." CSK squad for IPL 2023 MS Dhoni (c), Ravindra Jadeja, Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Subhranshu Senapati, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Dwaine Pretorius, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Simarjeet Singh, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana, Ajinkya Rahane, Ben Stokes, Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Kyle Jamieson, Ajay Mandal, Bhagath Varma

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 with the four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to face the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT)&nbsp; in the season opener in Ahmedabad. Talking about the Delhi Capitals (DC), they dealt with a huge blow when their regular skipper Rishabh Pant got involved in a horrific car crash last year. As the star Indian keeper-batter is out of action for quite some time, the Delhi camp recently named David Warner as their captain for IPL 2023.

On March 16 (Thursday), the official Twitter handle of the DC franchise shared a tweet to share the news with one and all. While the Aussie opener Warner was named the captain, India's star all-rounder Axar Patel will serve as his deputy for the forthcoming edition. DC captioned the tweet, "David Warner (c), Axar Patel (vc)

While many would have expected Prithvi Shaw to be named as Warner's deputy, Axar pipped Shaw to claim the post. The star Indian spin-bowling all-rounder has been in superb form with the bat of late. In the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23, he ended as the third-highest run-getter (264 runs with three half-centuries) and claimed three wickets overall. He has been part of the DC camp since IPL 2019 and is now an integral part of their line-up, performing in all departments. Axar has 1,135 runs and 101 scalps overall.

Shaw, on the other hand, is also with the Delhi unit since his debut season, in 2018, and has the experience of leading Mumbai in the domestic circuit. He also led the India U-19 team to the World Cup title in 2018. The swashbuckling opener has amassed&nbsp;1,588 runs in 63 games.

Meanwhile, DC fans will pin their hopes on Warner in the upcoming season. He has led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the championship in IPL 2016 and reads the game very well.&nbsp;

IPL 2023: Not Prithvi Shaw! Star Indian all-rounder named David Warner's deputy for Delhi Capitals

Virat Kohli became the full-time Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain in IPL 2013. He served as the RCB skipper till IPL 2021. He had announced that he will step down as the captain at the halfway stage of&nbsp;IPL 2021, where RCB eventually bowed out in the Eliminator. Recently, the 34-year-old star player met with the Smriti Mandhana-led RCB camp to motivate them after their five-match winless run in Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 edition. During his pep talk, Kohli reflected on his RCB captaincy tenure and made a big claim.

Kohli was quoted as saying in RCB Bold Diaries, “When my captaincy tenure was coming to an end, I was left with no belief, to be very honest. I was gone. The tank was absolutely empty. But that was my own perspective. That was just me as an individual saying that ‘I have seen so much of this, I just can’t manage it, I just can’t handle it anymore."

He opined, "But the next season, new people came in, they had new ideas, there was another opportunity. They were excited. Maybe as an individual, I wasn’t that excited, but they created the energy and we reached the playoffs three years in a row. And now we start every season with the excitement that there was before. I feel excited now."

Further, Kohli also recalled IPL 2019 when RCB lost their first six games and were reeling at the bottom. Although they put up a much-improved show from thereon, winning five of their last eight games, but still ended at the bottom in the overall standings.

Recalling that, Kohli said, "In 2019, we lost 6 matches in a row. I clearly remember after we lost the sixth game, we had a get-together in the evening. I walked in, I was the captain. I was completely gone. I couldn’t feel anything. I didn’t recognise myself and I was like I had no belief left whatsoever."

“When I walked into the post-match get together, the first person I saw was AB. He walked to me and we stood face to face and we were doing is like we had never lost six games in a row in our lives and we played 15 years of international cricket almost together,"&nbsp;he added.

Kohli talked about how players should give their 110 per cent in every game as that is all one can strive for as there is no guarantee of results. His words of wisdom surely helped Mandhana &amp; Co. as they earned their maiden win in WPL 2023, on Wednesday evening (March 15), beating Uttar Pradesh Warriorz (UPW) by five wickets.

MS Dhoni is gearing up for the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. The upcoming season will kick off on March 31 with the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) set to host the Dhoni-led CSK franchise on the opening day in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the tournament-opener, Dhoni is sweating it out at the nets.

Recently, the official Twitter handle of the CSK franchise shared a video of Dhoni's batting at the nets. The former Indian captain, who is known for his power-hitting, hit&nbsp;a no-look big shot and the video went viral in no time. The Yellow Army captioned the post saying, "Nonchalant"

Dhoni has not had the best of runs as a batter in the last three editions. While he did put up a much-improved show in IPL 2022, he still managed only 232 runs in 14 games, at a strike rate of 123.40. However, he gave something to cheer for his ardent fans by turning back the clock courtesy of his match-finishing knock versus Mumbai Indians (MI), played a few rapid cameos, and struck one&nbsp;fifty during&nbsp;the tournament opener, versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Dhoni's loyalists will hope for a memorable season for the legendary cricketer who might step away from the game completely after this year's IPL.

Ahead of the tournament-opener, Dhoni is sweating it out at the nets. Recently, the official Twitter handle of the CSK franchise shared a video of Dhoni's batting at the nets. The former Indian captain, who is known for his power-hitting, hit a no-look big shot and the video went viral in no time. The Yellow Army captioned the post saying, "Nonchalant" Here's the viral tweet: “Nonchalant!” 🚁💥#WhistlePodu #Yellove 🦁💛 pic.twitter.com/glafNLF1gk — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) March 14, 2023 × Also read: 'Any tips sir?': When Dhoni hilariously responded to a Twitter user who advised him to concentrate on batting Dhoni has not had the best of runs as a batter in the last three editions. While he did put up a much-improved show in IPL 2022, he still managed only 232 runs in 14 games, at a strike rate of 123.40. However, he gave something to cheer for his ardent fans by turning back the clock courtesy of his match-finishing knock versus Mumbai Indians (MI), played a few rapid cameos, and struck one fifty during the tournament opener, versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Dhoni's loyalists will hope for a memorable season for the legendary cricketer who might step away from the game completely after this year's IPL. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition will kick off on March 31 with the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) on their home ground, in Ahmedabad. The Yellow Army will be eager to start off on a winning note after their disastrous run in the IPL 2022 season, where they finished in the ninth spot. It is likely that the upcoming season will be Dhoni's last and, hence, the four-time winners will be desperate to give him a fitting farewell with another title win.

In IPL 2020, CSK failed to enter the playoffs for the first time ever in their rich history. In the next season, they bounced back in style and won the trophy. In IPL 2022, they once again fell flat and, hence, many hope for them to make a strong statement in this year's edition. They have already included England's star all-rounder Ben Stokes in their setup&nbsp;who will definitely provide more depth and balance to the side.

Ahead of IPL 2023, former Indian and CSK off-spinner Harbhajan Singh mentioned the player who can be Chennai's X-factor. Bhajji feels Ravindra Jadeja will be their trump card in the forthcoming season.

"The one person who everyone should keep an eye on is Ravindra Jadeja, especially how he bats for CSK. He may be promoted up the order plus he has his four overs," Harbhajan said on Star Sports.

"If you look at it from a world cricket perspective, I don't think there's a better all-rounder than him. So I’m looking forward to seeing Ravindra Jadeja in the IPL. The X factor for me will be Ravindra Jadeja because he has been very successful in these conditions as a bowler and a batsman, he’s been playing there for so many years. So for me, he is definitely going to be the X factor for the side," the veteran off-spinner further added.

Jadeja had a poor run in IPL 2022, where he led in the first eight games after being appointed the new captain ahead of the season. Under him, CSK only managed two wins whereas his own form remained a cause of concern. He ended with 116 runs at a strike rate of 118.37 and only claimed five wickets before a rib injury ruled him out after ten games.

Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket despite retiring from the international level in mid-2020. He had a glorious run at the highest level, amassing 17,266 runs -- despite mostly batting lower order the order -- for Team India along with accounting for 634 catches, 195 stumpings, 359 sixes and leading the national side to all three major ICC titles. He ended with 16 tons and as many as 108 half-centuries across formats. In the IPL, he has featured for the CSK franchise in 13 out of 15 editions, leading them to four titles and nine finals overall. In addition, he led them to two Champions League (CLT20) titles.&nbsp;

Overall, Dhoni has 4,978 IPL runs with 24 fifties. He will be eager to have a memorable run in IPL 2023. In the previous edition, Dhoni's CSK finished at the ninth spot, thus, he will be desperate to fire on all cylinders for the popular franchise and take them to another title.

IPL 2023: MS Dhoni turns back the clock with MAGNANIMOUS sixes in CSK practice session - WATCH

Glenn Maxwell has been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since the 2013 edition. He has represented the likes of Mumbai Indians (MI), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) -- now known as Punjab Kings (PBKS) -- Delhi Daredevils (DD) -- now renamed as Delhi Capitals (DC) -- before moving to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise in IPL 2021. While Maxwell had a disastrous run for PBKS in IPL 2020, he was roped in by the RCB franchise ahead of IPL 2021. The Australian star all-rounder repaid the faith shown by the RCB team management with a stellar season.

In IPL 2021, Maxwell&nbsp;scored 513 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of&nbsp;144.10; one of the reasons for RCB reaching the playoffs. After such an impressive run, there were little doubts in anyone's mind that he won't be retained by the franchise. However, there were limited slots and abundance of talents in RCB's ranks ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. Nonetheless, he was one of the three players retained -- along with Virat Kohli and Md Siraj -- before the auction. The all-rounder recently recalled his reaction on being retained by the RCB setup.

"You never know what’s gonna happen because it’s a big auction. And like, with how many people they were going to retain and we had, obviously, a couple of bowlers — Siraj, Harshal, Yuzi (Chahal), then AB, Virat, and those young Indian players, and all could have been retained at some stage. So to retain an overseas batter, sometimes isn’t the smartest move," Maxwell said on the RCB Podcast.

Maxwell added, "It seems straightforward, but in my head, there was obviously a lot more I had to go through. When I got the phone call that I was gonna be retained, I was pumped and couldn’t wait to stick around."

Having been bought by the franchise for INR 14.25 crore, in 2021,&nbsp;Maxwell has now become a vital part of RCB. In the previous edition, he returned with 301 runs in 13 games as RCB once again made it to the playoffs. He will aim for another memorable run in IPL 2023, starting on March 31.

MS Dhoni will be seen in action on the 22-yard cricket strip in the forthcoming IPL 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31. Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket despite hanging up his boots at the highest level in mid-2020, with a stellar career with over 10,000 runs in ODIs, close to 5,000 Test runs, 634 catches, 195 stumpings and leading India to all three major ICC titles.

Dhoni will lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 16. CSK is a huge brand and a major credit of the franchise's success goes to the former Indian captain. He has been associated with the Yellow Army since the inaugural season, in 2008, and remains their poster boy. Dhoni-CSK's story is one-for-the-ages as the former is from Jharkhand but got accepted in a jiffy from the Chennai crowd ever since he got roped in by the team owners in inaugural IPL auction.

However, Dhoni wasn't CSK's first-choice.&nbsp; In the past, while speaking on his Youtube channel, former CSK batsman Subramaniam Badrinath&nbsp;revealed that the franchise had initially zeroed in on&nbsp;buying Virender Sehwag and not Dhoni.

"The CSK management had decided (before IPL 2008) on picking Sehwag, but Sehwag himself said that he was brought up in Delhi, so he would have a better connection (with Delhi Daredevils). The management agreed for him (Sehwag) to play in Delhi, thinking it would be better. Then came the auctions, and they saw who was the better player. Before that India won the 2007 World T20. And only then did they decide to sign Dhoni,” Badrinath said.

Dhoni has led CSK to four IPL and two Champions League (CLT20) titles. Under Dhoni, the Chennai franchise reached the playoffs in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 before missing out on the last-four in 2020 and 2022 (with Ravindra Jadeja leading in the first eight games). He has scored 4,978 runs in the IPL, with 4,404 coming for CSK with 22 fifties (out of 24 overall).

Dhoni-led CSK will play the IPL 2023 opener, where they will face defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 31.

In the past, while speaking on his Youtube channel, former CSK batsman Subramaniam Badrinath revealed that the franchise had initially zeroed in on buying Virender Sehwag and not Dhoni. Also read: WPL 2023 Point Table: Women's Premier League, upcoming matches schedule & live streaming details "The CSK management had decided (before IPL 2008) on picking Sehwag, but Sehwag himself said that he was brought up in Delhi, so he would have a better connection (with Delhi Daredevils).

LSG became the newest participant in the IPL fold in 2016 after Sanjeev Goenka-owned RPSG group bought them for a whopping Rs. 7,090 crores. Gautam Gambhir was adjourned as the mentor of the side and was seen in the dugout of the side. KL Rahul was bought up for an astonishing price tag of Rs 17 crores ahead of the first season in 2022.

Rahul finished second to Jos Buttler in the Orange Cap race and ended with 616 runs in the IPL 2022 season. On the flip side, the team won 11 of the 16 IPL matches in the process qualifying for the playoffs, where they eventually lost to RCB.

Skipper Rahul will look at the season as an opportunity to revive his career as he looks to regain his form. He was recently dropped in favour of Shubman Gill in the Indian Test side for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

IPL 2023: 30 Days To Go, Check full schedule, teams, squads, captains, venue, tickets & all you need to know

Indian cricket has had many heroes, champions, demigods —&nbsp;someone like Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Anil Kumble among others;&nbsp;and then comes MS Dhoni. One name that had a generation growing up fall for his wonders, his persona and what not. Other than being the most successful Indian captain having won three different ICC trophies – T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup and the Champions Trophy — and being the only captain ever to do so, Dhoni also tasted tremendous success as the leader of the pack at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.

To begin with, it’s fair to say the introduction of the IPL to the world changed the way how cricket is looked up to and played today. The commencement of the now second-richest league in the world in terms of value across all sports paved a new path for the shortest format to thrive and succeed. Chennai Super Kings, also globally known as CSK, is led by MS Dhoni from season 1 and up until the 16th edition of the IPL that begins on March 31&nbsp;this year, this franchise happens to start as out-right favourites for the nth time.

Be it for the biggest or perhaps the loudest fan base in franchise cricket in this country, or for its history that literally gets richer with each passing season, Chennai Super Kings know how to make the most of the moment. Talking of living in the moment, who is better in doing it than the man himself, MS Dhoni. Having captained more than hundreds of players since 2008, Dhoni’s CSK has the privilege of being called the best IPL team in the tournament’s history. And why wouldn’t it be!

CSK, barring the two seasons when get got banned in the spot-fixing episode alongside Rajasthan Royals, have made it to the playoffs on 11 occasions in addition to reaching the finals on record nine times – the most by any team in IPL history. Not only this, they also have the highest win percentage of matches among all IPL teams.

In the inaugural season, they made it to the finals without a star-studded squad in comparison to others, where they lost to Rajasthan Royals. Come 2010, they won their maiden&nbsp;IPL trophy alongside winning the now-scrapped Champions League title the same year. Team Yellow then tasted success the next year as well before going down in the summit clash on several occasions in the following seasons.

Upon making a superlative return to the Indian Premier League following the ban, Chennai Super Kings again lifted the trophy in 2018 and achieved the same feat three years later in 2021. To put all of this in perspective, CSK claimed all these laurels under one captain only – MS Dhoni. The ageing MS held the fortress and didn’t let it fall despite numerous obstacles every year. No wonder he is regarded as the greatest captain ever – let alone for his IPL franchise or for the Indian team.

So, the question here arises that who takes over the reins when MS says goodbye to IPL?

Looking at the Chennai Super Kings’ current setup, we might take a look at the few options. While CSK tried Ravindra Jadeja as the captain for the early half of last year’s IPL, he couldn’t deliver – more so, his performance was getting affected by the burden of captaincy, as MS Dhoni had said before renouncing captaincy&nbsp;himself for the remainder of the season. &nbsp;

However, for the IPL upcoming season as well, which in hindsight is looking like MS Dhoni’s final season as a CSK player, someone has to be bestowed upon with the responsibility of not only leading this franchise but also carrying forward Dhoni’s legacy.

So, what are the options?

The easiest go-to-option is none other than CSK’s latest and the most-expensive recruit ever (INR 16.25 crores), England’s Ben Stokes. The English Test captain has had super success since taking over the leadership hat from Joe Root in the longest format. Given his credentials as an all-format batter and considering he has&nbsp;played alongside MS Dhoni in the past – in Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni along with the management could be tempted to hand over the captaincy to him.&nbsp; Now with Stokes lately announcing that he would&nbsp;be leaving the IPL 2023 a bit early in order to get ready in time for the long home summer, the CSK management could pick someone else, looking at the long-term option.

So then, who’s next? Ideal answer is Ruturaj Gaikwad

The Tami Nadu opener won IPL 2021 with CSK and is one of their most dependable batters at the top of the order. With age on his side, and having the experience of rubbing shoulders with the biggies in Chennai’s dressing room, Ruturaj looks like the&nbsp;perfect fit. Although all will depend on MS and the management and how and who they approach for the same role.

Explained: What future holds for Chennai Super Kings after Dhoni? Who will take forward his legacy?

On Wednesday (February 22), England Test captain Ben Stokes indicated that he will leave IPL 2023 early to prepare for the one-off Test versus Ireland and Ashes 2023, both on home soil. Addressing the press ahead of England's second and final Test versus hosts New Zealand, Stokes revealed that he is ready to skip the latter stage of the forthcoming IPL season, where he will represent the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for national duty. It is to be noted that the Ireland Test begins only four days after IPL 2023. Hence, his absence will be a massive blow for Dhoni &amp; Co. if they remain alive in the tournament till then.&nbsp;

"Yes, I'll play," Stokes told the reporters for the Ireland Test. "I'll be making sure that I give myself enough time to get back and play that [Ireland] game," he added. After his statement, former Indian opener has questioned CSK's captaincy plans.&nbsp;Speaking on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Chopra reacted to Stokes' claims and opined that&nbsp;Dhoni would be unable to hand over the reins to the Englishman if he wishes to at any stage of this year's IPL.

Chopra told, "Some people were saying that the Chennai Super Kings gave so much money to Ben Stokes because they want to groom him for captaincy. If you want to groom him for captaincy and the heir apparent leaves in the last phase, even if Chennai have made up their mind, they will not be able to do the hand-holding."

"As they say pass on the baton - how will that happen because MS Dhoni will be captaining and halfway through if he says that he will give it to Stokes, he is not going to be available in the end. So that cannot happen.," he asserted.

The former Indian opener further added, "It will be interesting to see Chennai's plan - does he (Stokes) even feature in their captaincy scheme of things or whether either Moeen Ali or Ruturaj Gaikwad could be their next captain? We shall find out. This will be in everyone's mind that you have to be a little careful with the money you invest in England and Australian players in an Ashes year - how you distribute your resources because there are chances of them leaving."

CSK will play the tournament opener&nbsp;versus the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT)&nbsp;on March 31 in Ahmedabad.

Success of WPL, IPL auction

This comes as a big move by the BCCI, who recently held the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) player auction in Mumbai – a tournament that is setup on the same lines as that of IPL, and its first edition will be played from March 4th to 26th in Mumbai. At the auction, Indian women’s team opener Smriti Mandhana created history by becoming the most-expensive player as she was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 3.4 crores.

On the other hand, the IPL 2023 mega-auction was held on December 23rd last year where England players like Sam Curran and Ben Stokes made headlines for their price tags. While Punjab Kings broke the bank for young Curran, purchasing him for INR 18.5 crores, four-time champions Chennai Super Kings bagged the services of Ben Stokes for INR 16.25 crores.

Mumbai Indians, who bought the Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur for INR 1.8 crores at the WPL player auction, purchased Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a whopping INR 17.5 crores.

Mumbai Indians, who bought the Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur for INR 1.8 crores at the WPL player auction, purchased Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a whopping INR 17.5 crores.

Shikhar Dhawan's stocks have gone down considerably following his poor run of form and the emergence of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. Hence, Dhawan was last seen in action during India-Bangladesh ODIs and hasn't played a single international match in 2023. While many have written him off for the 2023 ODI World Cup, the senior batter hasn't lost hope and remains optimistic about featuring in Team India's squad for the showpiece event, to be held later this year in India. At present, the 37-year-old is focused on IPL 2023 where he will be leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Speaking on his ouster from the national side, Dhawan was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI, "They (ups and downs) are part of life. With time, with experience, you learn how to handle them with ease. I find a lot of strength in them. I did my best. If somebody is doing better than my best, that is fine. That is why that person is there and I am not there. I am very happy and content wherever I am. I make sure my process goes on strong. Of course, there is always a chance of me coming back to the side."

The left-hander further opined, "If it comes (comeback) it is good, if it doesn't come that is also good. I have achieved a lot and I am happy with that. Whatever has to come will come. I don't get desperate about it." Dhawan, who has represented India in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, added, "My IPL preparation is going on well. I was in Bangalore for 10 days. The focus was on fitness. With the IPL coming up, I will join the camp in Mohali on February 24 and then we regroup again later on and get going. I am in a very good state of mind and looking forward to leading from the front."

In IPL 2022, Dhawan became a part of the Punjab outfit and returned as the eighth-highest run-getter. He ended with 460 runs but had an ordinary strike rate of 122.66. This time around, Dhawan will be desperate to score more freely and make a big statement with ODI WC spot up for grabs.&nbsp;

Shikhar Dhawan not 'desperate' about national comeback, focused on leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2023

The craze for the forthcoming inaugural Women's IPL is at an all-time high. With the continuous rise of the women's cricket in India, the BCCI is set to host the first-ever Women's IPL in March, 2023. Ahead of the showpiece event, the Manchester United owners, who had tried their hand to acquire an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in 2021, confirmed their interest in the forthcoming women's tournament.

On the sidelines of the ongoing ILT20 in Dubai, where Man United&nbsp;owns the Desert Vipers team, a representative for the owners told Cricbuzz that the Avaram Glazer is&nbsp;looking at the WIPL.

"Having bought into the ILT20, it is natural for us to look into other cricket opportunities around the world, including Women's IPL," Phil Oliver, the CEO of Desert Vipers, told the cricket portal on Friday (January 13). As per reports, the BCCI is set&nbsp;to&nbsp;conduct the&nbsp;auction for the WIPL franchises later this month, on January 25. Meanwhile, the media rights auction will take place on January 16.

Oliver, however,&nbsp;didn't&nbsp;reveal if the club has&nbsp;bought the Invitation To Tender (ITT) document, which is a prerequisite for buying a side in WIPL. "I can't reveal the details of how far we are in that process but I am happy to say that we are looking into all opportunities, including the WIPL. The India market is of interest to us. A lot of Indian cricket fans will be watching this tournament and will see what the Desert Vipers will bring to that. If anything, we want to bring an exciting brand of cricket to the Indian fans, just as to our fans all around the world," Oliver asserted. It is to be noted the ITT will be up for purchase till January 21.

It is believed that Man United were keen to buy one of the two new IPL teams, i.e. the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) -- eventually bought by Sanjiv Goenka group -- and Gujarat Titans (now owned by&nbsp;CVC Capital Group) in late 2021. Nonetheless, Oliver was quick to point out that not Man United but&nbsp;Avaram Glazer, of Lancer Capital, had bid for an IPL team.&nbsp;

Hence, Oliver clarified, "Just to draw the initial distinction, it was not Manchester United which was looking at an IPL team. The distinction is important. Avaram Glazer of Lancer Capital bid for an IPL team when it expanded last year. That company has bought a franchise in ILT20, Desert Viper, and Manchester United is not represented here."

Manchester United to own a franchise in WIPL? Owners confirm interest

2022 ended on a disappointing note for Team India as Rishabh Pant suffered injuries during a freak car accident on December 30. Pant was invovled in a horrific accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway&nbsp;and immediately taken to the Max Hospital, Dehradun. He was recently&nbsp;airlifted, on BCCI orders, to Mumbai and is undergoing treatment at the Kokilaben&nbsp;Hospital. The wicketkeeper-batter is on the road to recovery and his ligament injury is expected to heal in three to four months. While his return to the Indian team can take longer than expected, Sourav Ganguly -- former BCCI chief and Delhi Capitals' Director of Cricket -- has confirmed that Pant will miss IPL 2023.

"It will take time to heal. We cannot do anything. It's an accident. He is just 23. He has got a lot of time. Rishabh Pant will not be available for the IPL. I am in connection with DC. It will be a great IPL. We will do well. Pant's injury will affect DC," Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, in a recent statement released by the BCCI, it was mentioned, "Rishabh has two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and has suffered abrasion injuries on his back." No tentative period has been marked for Pant's return to the national team.&nbsp;

In Pant's absence, Delhi's squad will be jolted and they will have to appoint a new captain. David Warner, who joined the DC franchise last year, is a frontrunner to lead the side. Under him, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had won its maiden IPL championship in 2016. Here's DC squad for IPL 2023:

Wicketkeepers: Rishabh Pant (now ruled out), Phil Salt (ENG)

Batters: Yash Dhull, Sarfaraz Khan, Ripal Patel, Rovman Powell (WI), Prithvi Shaw, David Warner (AUS), Rilee Rossouw (SA), Manish Pandey.

All-rounders: Lalit Yadav, Mitchell Marsh (AUS), Axar Patel.

Bowlers: Khaleel Ahmed, Aman Hakim Khan, Praveen Dubey, Kuldeep Yadav, Mustafizur Rahman (BAN), Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Lungi Ngidi (SA), Anrich Nortje (SA), Vicky Ostwal, Chetan Sakariya, Mukesh Kumar, Ishant Sharma.

All eyes are now on the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL, to be held early in March. With the stupendous rise of the women's cricket in India, the inaugural edition is expected to be a huge hit. Ahead of the first season, the media rights auction will be held on January 16. It has been postponed by four days, as it was to take place on January 12, whereas the sale of teams will be over by January end&nbsp;to allow&nbsp;new franchises to have at least a month before the commencement of the showpiece event.&nbsp;

The media rights sale will take place by mid-January but there are few conditions attached, as revealed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).&nbsp;"If for any reason, 5 (five) Teams are not constituted to play in the League in Season 2023 or the League is not organized in Season 2023, then all the Media Rights Agreements shall stand terminated," the BCCI&nbsp;mentioned in the Invitation To Tender (ITT) document.

There is, however, another clause in the ITT that can&nbsp;raise eyebrows. It reads, "It is important to note that once the 5 (five) Teams are selected, participation by a Team in the League is subject to various terms and conditions, and BCCI is not providing any assurance or guarantee regarding participation of all 5 (five) Teams."

Talking about the media rights auction, it&nbsp;will be a closed process with the best bidder, not necessarily&nbsp;the highest, to walk away with the rights.

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"Any interested party wishing to submit a bid is required to purchase the ITT. However, only those satisfying the eligibility criteria set out in the ITT and subject to the other terms and conditions set out therein, shall be eligible to bid. It is clarified that merely purchasing this ITT does not entitle any person to bid. The BCCI reserves the right to cancel or amend the bidding process at any stage in any manner at its discretion," the BCCI said

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI have confirmed that there is no base price for any team. Given the rise of women's cricket nationwide,&nbsp;IPL franchises such as Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are keen become a part of WIPL and own&nbsp;a&nbsp;team.&nbsp;

Following his stint as DC's mentor, Ganguly had to leave the franchise after he was appointed as the BCCI chief in September 2019. He held the post for more than three years before being succeeded by former cricketer Roger Binny. Ganguly was the President of the board during a tough period, which involved the advent of Covid-19. Under his tenure, the IPL was successfully held in IPL 2020 (entirely in UAE) and in the following two years amid the Covid scare. Meanwhile, domestic cricket also resumed slowly and steadily during this period.

Now, Ganguly is set to reunite with Ricky Ponting, the former Australian skipper and Delhi's head coach. His first major priority will be to name the franchise's captain with Rishabh Pant very much out of IPL 2023 following his car accident on December 30, 2022. At present, Pant is out of the ICU at the Max hospital, Dehradun but is expected to remain out of cricketing action for the first half of 2023.

Former BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly to return to Delhi Capitals as franchise's Director of Cricket: Reports

On Friday (December 23), the Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction was held in Kochi. The city hosted the 16th IPL auction for the first time ever and saw plenty of big names trigger a bidding war among the ten franchises. The likes of Sam Curran (INR 18.5 crore), Cameron Green (INR 17.5 crore), Ben Stokes (INR 16.25 crore) were the three to return with the biggest pay cheques.

After Stokes joined the four-time champions CSK, some believe that it will give MS Dhoni a chance to hand over the captaincy to the English all-rounder, who is off to a dream start as the England Test captain. Before IPL 2022, Dhoni had quit captaincy and asked Ravindra Jadeja to lead which didn't yield desirable results. Nonetheless, will Dhoni dare to repeat the same move with Stokes joining the Yellow Army? In this regard, Universe Boss Chris Gayle gave a fitting reply.

Gayle, during his discussion on Jio Cinemas, was asked to comment&nbsp;on the CSK captaincy debate. He replied saying, “Dhoni. Once you are playing, you lead a team, okay? Done.”

Gayle further asserted, "They are two fantastic minds in the dressing room, MSD and Ben Stokes. But I think Stokes will sit back and respect MSD and let him do his thing. The young players will also get to learn a lot from Stokes. It’s good to have him and he still has the likes of DJ Bravo in the CSK ranks."

"Fitting in the culture is important and I am sure without any doubt, with his experience, he will fit in amazingly with the Super Kings. As we all knock, they lack all-rounders and will accept Stokes with both hands," added the IPL legend.
