IPL 2023: Updated squads of all 10 teams and their captains

The 16th season of the Indian Premier League is just a day away and the fans are geared up for the latest edition of India's cricket carnival. The 2023 IPL has some new rules - one of them is - the organisers have introduced the concept of impact player. Watch the video to know more such rules.

IPL 2023: India's cricket carnival is here & it begins on Friday in Ahmedabad | WION Sports

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 (Friday) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. The opening game will see the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) take on the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The season is keenly awaited as it marks the return of home-and-away format, after a four-year-hiatus, and all eyes are on the big and marquee players in the mega event.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, David Warner, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya and many other top players are expected to set the stage on fire. On the other hand, many ardent fans are desperate to see how some debutant and young players will perform in the upcoming edition. Amid all this, former England pacer Steve Harmison has predicted that Harry Brook could end up with the Player of the Tournament award in IPL 2023.

Brook has been in sensational form ever since his international debut for England since January 2022. He has represented England in six Tests, three ODIs and 20 T20Is and already has four hundreds in whites and strikes at over 135 (137.77) in the shortest format. He has impressed with his ability to hit big as well as remain consistent across formats. Thus, Harmison believes the 24-year-old, who will represent the Aiden Markram-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), can win the Player of the Tournament award.

"I think he might start with an orange cap as well. I think Harry Brooke is going to be the best player. I think he could get Player of the Tournament," Steve Harmison was quoted as saying by givemesport.

"When you're on a wave like he's on, things just seem to fall into place. Sometimes they sort of nosedive and dive-bomb, but I don't see it with Harry. For me, I think he might start with an orange cap because he's in an orange kit. I've got a funny feeling if he's around for the whole series. The Sunrisers, I think they've done some decent business. I think they've got some decent business over the line. I think Brooke could be the icing on the cake for them and I think he might just score the runs," Harmison added.

While Brook's Test numbers outshadow his white-ball performances, he has the ability to switch his game as per the situation and is expected to go big with the willow for the Orange Army. The 2016 champions will kick off their campaign versus the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 2 (Sunday) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

IPL 2023: Not Kohli, SKY or Stokes! Ex-Eng pacer says THIS SRH debutant could win Player of the Tournament

Chennai Super Kings’ could be handed a major blow for their Indian Premier League (IPL) curtain-raiser clash against Gujarat Titans on Friday, March 31. Dhoni, 41, did not take the batting sessions on Thursday evening which has created a buzz about his availability for the Gujarat Titans clash.

Is Dhoni out?

Although there is no official word from the franchise, Dhoni did not take the net sessions for batting on Thursday and is now reported to miss the opening clash. IPL 2023: MS Dhoni likely to sit out of CSK's curtain-raiser clash against GT due to THIS reason - Reports

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will have another captaincy twist in their opening Indian Premier League (IPL) contest on Sunday, April 2 against Rajasthan Royals. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be seen donning the captain’s armband for the opening clash against Rajasthan Royals with new permanent skipper Aiden Markram not available for the contest.

Why is Markram not available for IPL opener?

Currently, the newly appointed SRH skipper is on international duty with South Africa and will arrive in India on Monday, April 3. South Africa are currently engaged in a two-match ODI series and will have to win the series to secure an automatic spot in the ODI World Cup later in the year. South Africa need to win the series 2-0 while also hoping for Bangladesh to make them a favour.

If Ireland lose one of their matches against Bangladesh in May and South Africa win the series against the Dutch they will book their place in the ODI World Cup and will not need to play in the match.

Markram had a productive IPL 2022 and scored 381 runs with a strike rate near 140 while he was also part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape side that won the inaugural season of the SA20. Markram amassed 366 runs at a strike rate of 127.97 while also scalping 11 wickets.

Bhuvneshwar gets captaincy nod

In Markram’s absence, SRH’s long-standing man Bhuvneshwar Kumar will take over the nods of captaincy. The Indian pacer has been with the franchise since 2013 and was part of the IPL-winning side in 2016 under David Warner. Bhuvneshwar was also India’s vice-captain in the Ireland tour of 2022 when Hardik Pandya led the side.

'They will be lifting IPL 2023 trophy': Michael Vaughan's MASSIVE PREDICTION ahead of season-opener

Virat Kohli is the only player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to play for the same team -- i.e. the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) -- in all seasons so far starting from 2008, when the cash-rich league came into the picture. He is also one of the few big players to have not won the IPL so far. However, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar feels IPL 2023 could be the season where Kohli's trophy-drought might get over.

Ahead of the IPL 2023 opener, where the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) will take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad on Friday (March 31), Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo, "Yes, I feel Virat Kohli's dream of winning the trophy will come true this time. They have a wonderful bowling attack. If Faf du Plessis scores runs, they will have a great chance."

Kohli has scored most runs in the IPL (6,624) in 223 matches at a strike rate of 129.14 along with five hundreds and 44 half-centuries. The 34-year-old had a dismal run in IPL 2022 where he only managed 341 runs in 16 games at an average of 22.73 and a below-par strike rate of 115.99. Last year, the Faf du Plessis-led RCB franchise reached the playoffs and won the Eliminator, versus the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), before they bowed out with a loss to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2.

Thus, Kohli will be desperate to get going with the bat this time around and guide his side to their maiden title. They have a strong squad at their disposal comprising the likes of Du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Kohli, Harshal Patel, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dinesh Karthik, Rajat Patidar, Md Siraj, David Willey, Reece Topley, Michael Bracewell, etc.

Virat Kohli's dream of winning the trophy will come true: Manjrekar's MASSIVE claim ahead of IPL 2023

Rohit Sharma is geaing up for the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31 in Ahmedabad. In IPL 2022, the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) had a forgettable run where they ended at the bottom in the ten-team tournament. It was the first time that the star-studded MI line-up ended at the bottom in the tournament history. Thus, they will be aiming for a big turnaround in IPL 2023, where they will open their campaign versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 02 in Bengaluru.

Ahead of the IPL 2023 edition, former Indian and MI spinner Pragyan Ojha recalled his first interaction with Rohit. The duo have played a lot of cricket together since the U-15 days and even shared the dressing room for India and the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in the initial years of the IPL, before also playing together in the MI camp. Thus, Ojha recalled his early days with Hitman and revealed that Rohit showed a lot of aggression towards him.

In IPL 2022, he had a dismal run where he only managed 268 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 120.18. 'Was surprised to see why he was so aggressive with me': Former India spinner on MI skipper Rohit Sharma

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 in Ahmedabad. The forthcoming season might be MS Dhoni's last appearance. Although no official confirmation has been made, speculations are rife that IPL 2023 will be the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain's farwell season and, thus, his ardent fans will come in large numbers to watch his on-field heroics. Ahead of the tournament opener, on Friday, Rajasthan Royals (RR)'s young star Riyan Parag heaped praise on Dhoni.

Parag has taken over as Rajasthan's finisher in the past few seasons. In IPL 2022, the right-hander amassed 183 runs at a strike rate of 138.64 with a best of 56 versus the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He will aim to have a breakthrough season this time around and try to improve significantly as a finisher for the Royals. Prior to his side's season opener, versus Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday (April 02), Parag hailed Dhoni the finisher and stated that no one has 'mastered the finishing art' like the former Indian captain.

"I have been doing the finishing role for the last three years now. There is just one name that comes to my mind which I also have said before, MS Dhoni. I do not think anyone else has mastered that art. Going into that role, I always look up to him, how he finishes games or how he takes the game deep," Parag told news agency PTI.

Parag opened up on where he wishes to bat for the IPL 2022 runners-up in the upcoming edition. "If they (Royals) were to ask me where I want to bat, I would say No. 4. But, then, like always, I am open to bat wherever the team needs me and wherever they think I fit the best. It is a team game; whichever way the combinations match up, I am happy to contribute," the 21-year-old added.

IPL 2023: 'Don't think anyone else has mastered the finishing art' - RR star hails CSK captain MS Dhoni

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is all set for the latest season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the predations are in the final stage. While Mumbai will look to put behind a disappointing 2022 season, their main aim will be to conquer the glorious title for the sixth time. However, ahead of the start he was disappointed to miss out on the services of star man Jasprit Bumrah and says those are big shoes to fill in.

“It will be a big miss," the India skipper said.

"It is sad, but we do understand how big his (Jasprit) shoes are to fill."

While MI are yet to find a suitable replacement for Jasprit, the franchise is looking to close in on a replacement as the IPL season is set for a kickoff in less than 48 hours. Mumbai will have the luxury of getting an experienced player but replacing Bumrah will be a big headache.

"Yes, we have been discussing a few options and hopefully we can close it in the next couple of days and let you know about it," Rohit said on Wednesday.

"There is an opportunity that is up for grabs, to fill that place. A lot of young players will get an opportunity and this is a platform for them to come out and express themselves. There are a couple of guys who have been with this team for the last two years and they are very much ready to step up,” Rohit added.

MI’s head coach Mark Boucher also highlighted Bumrah’s absence but insisted there is an opportunity up for grabs. According to him, some young players that can come in and make an impact with their bench strength also a feasible option. There are talks of Arjun Tendulkar’s potential debut for the franchise after he was bought for Rs 30 lakh in the 2022 auctions.

"We will see tonight (in a practice match). He's playing tonight. One of the things about international players is that they need the freedom to move around a bit. All of them have been playing cricket. Jofra obviously is coming off a major injury, he has been playing quite a bit of cricket lately, which is good. He's in a good space. He's ready to get up there and perform, which, for us, is a good place to be in. We will see tonight how he goes," Boucher said while addressing Bumrah’s potential replacement headache.

Mumbai will bid to win their sixth IPL title in the upcoming season and will start their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The contest will take place at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, April 2 when the entire nation also celebrates the 12th anniversary of India’s 2011 World Cup campaign.

IPL 2023: Punjab Kings handed setback ahead of season kickoff, THIS key star to miss opening clash against KKR

MS Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket despite retiring from the international level on August 15, 2020. The former Indian captain remains active in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 41-year-old is set to lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) once again during the forthcoming 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31 with the four-time champions Yellow Army taking on the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT). While no official confirmation has come, many believe the upcoming season will be Dhoni's last.

Ahead of the season opener, Shane Watson -- former Australian all-rounder and CSK opener -- opined on Dhoni's IPL future and Chennai's possible comeback after a disastrous run in IPL 2022, where they ended at the ninth spot. "CSK will definitely bounce back. They always do. They have got too many great players and are led so incredibly well by MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming. They will absolutely turn it around, there is no doubt in my mind, knowing how they work. Right at the back end of my career, to be able to play with CSK and for us to perform as a team in two of the three years was great. The CSK fans, for sure, are something very special,” Watson told Sportstar.

Watson then shifted his focus on Dhoni and claimed, "He can keep playing for as long as he wants. He is still very fit and it looks like he has put in more work in the lead-up to this tournament. He has a big point to prove that you can play and lead incredibly well as a 42 (41)-year-old. He’s the man."

Dhoni has amassed 4,978 runs -- seventh-most overall -- in 234 games in the IPL, representing the CSK and now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). Since IPL 2020, he has not had a great run as captain and batter. Hence, he will be eager to sign off -- if he wishes to retire from the IPL after the 2023 edition -- on a high with a roaring success with the bat and also taking the CSK franchise to their fifth title overall.

Kumble while speaking on Jio Cinema said, "There are plenty of them; it’s difficult to pick just one. I can certainly look back and say probably a Chris Gayle, someone who is larger than life. The left-handed batter scored a total of 4,965 runs in his IPL career, featuring in as many as 142 matches at a strike rate of 148.96. He remains the eighth-highest run-getter to date and has most centuries (six) under his belt in the tournament as well.

The forthcoming edition is much hyped as it can be CSK captain MS Dhoni's last season. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach Sanjay Bangar also opined on Dhoni's successor at CSK and said, "As far as his successor is concerned, that's something the team management and his himself would have thought about. Smith was last seen in the IPL in 2021 when Delhi Capitals signed him for Rs 2.20 crore and will now handle the microphone rather than the bat.

"Steve Smith has joined the expert panel for the marquee tournament. Smith will be making his broadcast debut with Star Sports, adding his invaluable insights and expertise to Star Sports' already impressive roster of panelists," the broadcaster said in a statement.

Smith, 33, announced his return to the tournament on Twitter on Monday, saying in a teaser video: "Namaste, India. I've got some exciting news for you: I'm joining IPL 2023.”

The Aussie star first came into the spotlight in 2012, when he was snapped by the Pune Warriors India and would then play for the Rising Pune Supergiants. With the latter, Smith reached the final of the IPL in 2017 before failing to take his team over the line in the final over of the season finale. Smith then signed for Rajasthan Royals and led the side before being released ahead of the 2021 season.

"DON'T blink if you're being held at gunpoint," one Twitter user quipped.

The former Australia captain was recently seen leading the ODI side as regular skipper Pat Cummins was absent due to the death of his ill mother. Smith’s Aussie side came from behind to win 2-1 while condemning India to their first home ODI series defeat in four years.

Till now he has played 103 matches in his IPL career. He has scored 2485 runs, with an average of 34.51. He has also slammed one century and 11 half-centuries, with his highest IPL score being 101 runs.

The IPL 2023 season will start on Friday, March 31 when defending champions Gujarat Titans take on four-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad.

IPL 2023: Former Australia skipper Steve Smith back in spotlight, set to feature in THIS role

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) remain only one of the three teams, from the initial eight franchises, to have not won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title to date. The RCB franchise have come close to winning the title on three occasions, reaching the final in 2009, 2011 and 2016, but have never tasted success as yet. Over the years, the fan-following has just grown for the RCB camp who have had some big marquee players such as Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Kevin Pietersen, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, etc.

The trio of Kohli, ABD and Gayle have entertained fans over the years. Recently, the former South African captain De Villiers recalled the first impression he had of Kohli to which Gayle gave an epic reply. During a conversation with Universe Boss Gayle, in the video posted by RCB on their YouTube channel, De Villiers said, "Oh my goodness...I have had this question before and I had given this answer before as well. I think he was quite cocky and arrogant when I met him the first time. With that hairstyle and he had bit of a strut going..."

To this, the West Indies legend Gayle burst out laughing and asked, “Flamboyant, was he?”

ABD replied, “Yes absolutely. But the minute I got to know him a bit better and watched him play I mean I've got as much respect for him but I got to know him better as a human being. I think he had a barrier around him when I met him the first time and that barrier opened up and I got to know the person. I didn't not like him but you know what I'm saying. He's a top person now but first impression was ufff...he's got to come down to earth a bit.”

Over the years, the camaraderie between Gayle, Kohli and ABD have mesmerised RCB fans. The trio were seen together during an event where the new jersey of the Bengaluru franchise was unveiled for the upcoming IPL 2023 edition. RCB will open their campaign versus five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 02 at their home ground M Chinnaswammy Stadium, Bengaluru.

'He was cocky, arrogant': Ex-RCB star De Villiers shares first impression of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle reacts

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has backed the Chennai Super Kings to reach the playoffs in IPL 2023. The former four-time IPL champions stood second-last on the points table in 2022, and now, with the inclusion of World Cup winner in Ben Stokes, Chopra believes CSK will better their previous result.

Speaking on AakashVani on Jio Cinema, Chopra said the Chennai team revolves around MS Dhoni and a plethora of all-rounders they have at their disposal, and that, their success will be defined by these two only.

"Apart from Dhoni, Chennai is defined by all-rounders. When you look at this team, there are two wicketkeepers - one is Dhoni, and the other is Devon Conway. Devon Conway is a class player," Chopra said as quoted by Sportskeeda. "If we talk about all-rounders - Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwaine Pretorius, Mitchell Santner and Ben Stokes in bold letters, and then two or three more Indian names," Aakash added.

Sharing his thoughts on Chennai’s chances this season, Chopra opines they look strong on paper, and with matches scheduled to take place at Chepauk, the team can prosper. The former Kolkata Knight Riders opener added that knowing MS Dhoni is back leading the team and that this could potentially be his last season in IPL, wonders are expected to happen.

"They are looking like a very decent team on paper. Where can this team reach? They should reach the playoffs if they play to their potential. Dhoni is the captain, there is an emotional connect, it is the last season, and the matches are going to be played in Chennai, which is their fortress," Chopra said.

Elaborating on whom he thinks would top the charts in both departments – batting and bowling, given the firepower CSK have, Chopra said the returning Deepak Chahar could be Chennai’s stand-out bowler while New Zealand’s Devon Conway is sure to make headlines with heaps of runs throughout the tournament. While Chahar missed out on playing last year’s IPL due to an injury, he is likely to remain fit and available for this season. Conway, on the other hand, was among the runs for CSK in 2022, hitting 252 runs at an impressive strike rate of 145.67.

IPL 2023: Apart from MS Dhoni, Chennai team is defined by all-rounders, says Aakash Chopra

After Shreyas Iyer's back injury during the India-Australia Tests, his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 became doubtful. Amid such uncertainty, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were left with a huge concern; to get an additional batter and a new skipper for IPL 2023. On Monday (March 27), the two-time winners KKR named Nitish Rana as their captain for the forthcoming season while they remain hopeful of Iyer's return in the latter stage of the tournament.

The IPL 2023 edition kicks off on March 31 with the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) taking on the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad.
Stokes arrives in style

Stokes and CSK posted a video of the England Test captain arriving at the team hotel as he received a royal welcome. Stokes has been in great form for the national side and has produced a remarkable show as a skipper for England. However, he will now be charged to help CSK claim a fifth IPL title this season as they try to go level with Mumbai Indians for the most titles won.

Potential CSK captain?

Now 31, Stokes still has a chunk of top-quality cricket left ahead of him. With MS Dhoni potentially playing in his final season with the Chennai-based franchise, Stokes is being looked at as a viable option to succeed him. The England all-rounder has been a pivotal feature in the English side recently and played a crucial role in their pursuit of ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup wins in 2019 and 2022 respectively.

Stokes' rich vein of form

While limited-overs cricket has already seen the best out of the former Rajasthan Royals man, he has excelled in the red-ball format for England. Stokes is yet to lose a Test series as England skipper and has led them to series wins against New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan.

Stokes also guided England in the Birmingham Test, where his side beat India in July 2022. Most recently he was seen in action in the Test series against New Zealand, where his side was on the receiving end. New Zealand's win against England saw them become just the third nation to have won a Test match despite following-on.

Stokes on the horizon will be a key feature for the CSK side as they try to capture the glory, having finished ninth in IPL 2022 with just four wins.

IPL 2023: CSK's record purchase Ben Stokes makes grand entrance at team hotel ahead of season kickoff | WATCH

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set for a major overhaul after the latest change in rule. The IPL 2023 season all set for kick-off on Friday, March 31 will see a new rule that will see the teams name their Playing XI after the toss has taken place. The move was in contemplation for a long time and will now be part of the men’s setup, having previously been in use at the recently concluded SA20 in South Africa.

Change in rule for latest season

"Currently the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss," a note, seen by ESPNcricinfo, read.

"This has been changed to exchange of teams immediately post the toss, to enable teams to choose the best XI depending on whether they are batting or bowling first. It will also assist the teams to plan for the impact player,” the note further added.

The new rule change is supposed to reduce the impact of toss with teams now having the luxury to name a Playing XI more adaptable to the role. If a certain team is tasked to bowl second, that is later in the day in dew conditions, and then the team line-up could be tweaked accordingly. While the toss will still play an important role in the overall outcome of the match, the new rule could deliver the flexibility needed for the teams after taking the playing conditions into context.

Other changes to the IPL playing conditions

Over-rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for every over not completed in the allocated time.

Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper will result in a dead ball and five penalty runs.

Unfair movement by a fielder will result in a dead ball and five penalty runs.

The latest season will also see a few more rule changes with over-rate penalties and unfair movement of wicketkeepers resulting in five-run penalties and dead-ball. The latter rule applies to the unfair movement of the fielder as well.

The new season of the IPL will see 10 teams in action as they try to clinch glory with Gujarat Titans being the defending champions. They will kick start the season against Chennai Super Kings on Friday, March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad.

IPL 2023 New Promo: 11 days to go, Check new promo of Indian Premier League featuring Kohli, Sharma & Pandya

From KING Virat Kohli to MS Dhoni's protégé, Rishabh Pant: Most runs in an IPL season

Virat Kohli is regarded as a modern-day great and will easily sign off as one of the legends of the gentlemen's game. Kohli recently slammed his first-ever Test century since late 2019 and 75th ton overall; second most after Sachin Tendulkar (100 centuries in total). While Kohli has the knack to adapt in every format, much credit for his success also goes to him being extremely fit.

Kohli has raised the fitness standards in Indian cricket. He is known to be a calculative batter, especially in white-ball formats, and one who thrives in finding the gaps and keeping the scoreboard ticking with some quick runs between the wickets. Recently, the former Indian captain revealed the fastest runner between wickets.

Kohli has had memorable partnerships with many, with MS Dhoni and AB de Villiers topping the list. The reason why he has enjoyed so much success batting alongside Dhoni and ABD is because they run hard between wickets. Thus, Kohli named the former South African and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) superstar de Villiers as the fastest runner between wickets, followed by Dhoni.

"AB de Villiers has been by far the fastest I've run with between wickets. The only other guy I had so much co- ordination and understanding with was MS Dhoni. Now I don't know about the speeds, but him and MS I did not have to even call. We hardly called for runs," Kohli said on the latest edition of the 360 Show, hosted by De Villiers on his YouTube channel. Meanwhile, ABD mentioned his former teammate Faf du Plessis as the fastest between wickets.

Kohli also opened up on ending his Test-century drought in the India-Australia Ahmedabad Test, where he slammed a majestic 186 in the drawn encounter.

"Playing Test cricket and scoring hundred in red ball is the most special feeling for me. The hundred in Ahmedabad has given me the calmness, got that old feeling back," the star Indian batter added.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to kick off on March 31 in Ahmedabad. Over the years, IPL has become a big success as it allows fans to see Indian players compete with one another and also share as well as rub shoulders with some uncapped and big international cricketers.

The IPL started in 2008 and has become a huge brand nationwide. But before IPL became a revelation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) used to conduct the Challengers Trophy. It was a tournament that began in 1993-94 and was held till the 2013-14 season (not played in 2002-03), every October before the Ranji Trophy with an aim to give young and domestic players a chance to showcase their skills while playing with, and against, the senior Team India players.

During the 2006 edition of the Challengers Trophy, India's famed trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sourav Ganguly -- in the last phase of their respective careers -- were divided among two teams. The then national captains Dravid and Tendulkar were part of the India Blues whereas Ganguly was in Mohammed Kaif-led India Greens. Venugopal Rao led the India Reds with Dravid leading India Blues.

In the second game of the competition, Dravid-led India Blues squared off with India Greens. Here's a throwback video of when Ganguly bowled to Dravid and Tendulkar:

Talking about the contest, Dravid-led India Blues thrashed India Greens by a whopping 266-run margin courtesy of Tendulkar's 139 and half-centuries from Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Irfan Pathan. Chasing 382, India Greens fell for 115 with Parthiv Patel (43) and Ganguly (24) being the top run-getters. The tournament was held in Chennai, which eventually saw India Blues and India Reds share the trophy after a rain-abandoned finale.

When IPL kicked off, Dravid went on to lead Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) whereas Ganguly represented the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and now-defunct Pune Warriors (PWI). Meanwhile, Tendulkar was part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) and remains their team mentor while Ganguly has rejoined Delhi Capitals (DC) as the Director of Cricket Operations for IPL 2023. Dravid isn't part of the IPL at present as he is India's head coach.

MS Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket despite retiring from the international level on August 15, 2020. The former Indian captain remains active in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is gearing up to lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the forthcoming 2023 edition.

Dhoni is one who likes to reveal nothing about his future plans. While he hasn't made it official that IPL 2023 will be his last season in the mega event, many believe he will be playing his final season. This, CSK fast-bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar spilled the beans on Thala Dhoni's future.

"No one has said that this would be his final year. At least, he hasn’t. Hopefully, he will play more. We don’t know any such thing; we want him to play as much as he can," Chahar told News India Sports.

"He knows when to retire; we saw it when he did in Tests and international cricket. No one else knows. I just hope he continues to play; it’s a privilege to play under him. It has been a dream to play with him. He’s in good touch as well; you will see that when he bats in the IPL this year," Chahar added.

Also read: IPL 2023: Not MS Dhoni! IPL 2023: The most awaited cricket T20 tournament, Indian Premier League, will begin on March 31, 2023. Gujarat Titans will lock horns with Chennai Super Kings in the first match of IPL 2023 at the Narendra Modi Crickey Stadium, Ahmedabad. Ten teams will participate in the extravagant cricket league launched by BCCI 16 years ago. However, for 2023, things are different as the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has made some amendments to the rules and format of IPL 2023. Firstly, BCCI has restored the home-and-away method of conducting league matches in the 16th edition of IPL. They have divided the two groups into two groups of five. Each team will play 14 league-stage matches, including seven home and seven away games. Furthermore, the IPL will continue for 52 days across 12 venues. Here are all the new rules and changes in the old ones introduced by BCCI in the Indian Premier League 2023. IPL 2023 Wide Ball Review Players can challenge the umpire's wide and no-ball decisions using the Decision Review System (DRS). The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 became the first tournament to introduce and implement the new rile. IPL will also practice the rule in their upcoming matches from March 31, 2023. Mumbai Indians-Women's captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, became the first player to challenge the umpire's wide call and benefit from it. IPL 2023 Impact Player Rule BCCI has added a new 'Impact Player' rule in Indian Premier League 2023. It allows every team to replace one of their on-field players with any of the four substitutes anytime during the match. However, the replaced player cannot participate in the game any further, not even as a substitute player. Furthermore, if a team names four foreign players in their playing eleven, the impact player can only be an Indian. IPL 2023 Venues Since the BCCI has changed the format of the league-stage matches to home-and-away matches, each team has a home venue. Thus, each team will play 14 league-stage matches, including seven home and seven away matches. The top four teams in the IPL points table will qualify for the semifinals. IPL 2023 New Rules: 12 days to go, Here's how Indian Premier League 2023 would be different from IPL 2022

The players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could have a lengthy time-out from their team if they are contracted with Covid-19 during the tournament. The IPL governing body is contemplating and insisting on seven days of isolation for players if they contract the novel virus. The Covid-19 policy is likely to attract a huge backlash from the players after last year has seen athletes compete in competitions despite testing positive for the virus.

Medical guidelines for IPL 2023

"While there has been a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases in India we still have to be careful of the emerging strains which are becoming a concern at regular intervals," the IPL's medical guidelines, which were distributed to franchises this week, say.

"Positive cases must be isolated for a maximum of seven days. Positive cases will not be allowed to participate in any match or any form of activity/event during the period of isolation.

There has been a slight change in the guidelines for the players if they are found asymptomatic in the next 24 hours. The players can undergo RT-PCR in the above case and thus can join the team at the earliest possible hour.

"From day five, they can undergo an RT-PCR, provided they must be must be asymptomatic without any medication for 24 hours. Once the first result is negative the 2nd test must be done 24 hours apart. Only after obtaining two negative RT-PCR tests 24 hours apart i.e. day five and day six, can they rejoin the group."

Backlash from players expected

Last year Tahila Mcgrath of Australia was allowed to play in the gold medal match of the Commonwealth Games despite contracting the ungodly virus. Novak Djokovic in tennis was allowed to play in the Australia Open despite not being vaccinated, which has raised concerns for players participating in the IPL as they could have to sit out for a longer spell of time.

The IPL 2023 season will start on March 31 with ten teams in action for the blockbuster event while this year the tournament will be played in multiple cities compared to last season’s protocols that restricted the tournament to just Mumbai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
