Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) occupy the seventh spot in IPL 2023 points table after their narrow loss over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), at home, on Monday evening (April 17). Bowling first, RCB was in for a leather hunt as they conceded 226/6 and while they were on course to chase down the target, they lost by eight runs after being restricted to 218 for 8.

RCB are expected to make a strong comeback in the season and will rely on their captain Faf du Plessis. Du Plessis has hit the ground running in IPL 2023 and is the current Orange Cap holder (259 runs) after his splendid 33-ball 62 versus CSK. Ever since the former South African captain joined the RCB camp, he has been one of their top performers and is expected to revamp his side's campaign in this year's IPL season.

In IPL 2022, Du Plessis represented the RCB franchise for the first time -- after they bought him for INR 70 million (INR 7 crore) -- and he didn't disappoint; leading the side to the playoffs and also ending as RCB's highest run-scorer. Recently, RCB's Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson explained why the veteran cricketer was chosen as the RCB captain ahead of IPL 2022.

Speaking on the RCB podcast, Hesson said, "I guess it’s really difficult coming into a group when the previous captain (Virat Kohli) is still there. So we needed somebody that could come in, would have respect within the group instantly because if he comes in a lot of people can be intimidated by the ex-captain being near and potentially aren’t confident enough to make your own decisions."

The New Zealander further opined, “So we wanted somebody who had captained at an international level before ideally, somebody that had respect from amongst the Indian players and the international players. That was really important that it wasn’t just somebody that would take a year to be in. We felt that at RCB we needed someone to hit the ground running."

He added, "We wanted a player who we knew could plug and play from a performance point of view. So somebody that had a really good record in the IPL in recent years and Faf clearly had that. And also would work well with the coach and the coaching group because we wanted that inclusive style. Somebody that we had a lot of good senior players Virat, Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) DK (Dinesh Karthik) that we were looking to either bring in or retain. So we needed to use those skills rather than just be an authoritarian-style captain. We want someone who will actually come and work with that group. And Faf ticked all those boxes."

IPL 2023: REVEALED! Mike Hesson explains why Faf du Plessis was made RCB captain after Virat Kohli

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by eight runs in match 24 of the IPL 2023 edition on Monday evening (April 18). Being asked to bat first, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, MS Dhoni & Co. rode on Devon Conway's 83 (45), Ajinkya Rahane's 20-ball 37 and Shivam Dube's 27-ball 52 to post a mammoth 226 for 6 in 20 overs. In response, RCB managed 218/8 -- with electrifying fifties from Glenn Maxwell (36-ball 76) and Faf du Plessis (33-ball 62) with some tidy overs towards the end to win by a whisker.

At the post-match presentation, Dhoni reviewed CSK's death-bowling performance and said, " It is a difficult one for the youngsters, specially at this time of the year with the dew around. But they are working hard. Bravo is one of the specialists. Under him, the bowlers will gain confidence. It's a team game. The coach, the bowling coach and the senior players guide them."

Virender Sehwag, India's former cricketer, spoke at length on CSK's bowling performance. The Yellow Army bowlers had leaked runs left, right and centre in the first half of RCB's run-chase. After ten overs, RCB was well-placed 121 for 2. They somehow pulled things back with regular wickets towards the end overs and leaked only 37 runs in the last four overs (with 46 required from 24 balls). Nonetheless, they once again conceded plenty of extras -- which has been their Achilles heels this season -- in the high-scorer (11; including six wides).

Sehwag said on Cricbuzz, "Dhoni was not looking happy because he has mentioned it before that he wants the bowlers to reduce the number of no-balls and wides. CSK had bowled two-three years of extra and against RCB, they bowled another extra over. It shouldn't go to a stage where Dhoni gets banned and CSK has to take the field without their captain."

He added, "With the kind of knee injury he has, it appears he might play only a handful of matches more anyway. He is constantly pushing himself but if his bowlers are bowling so many wides and no-balls, then Dhoni will have to take rest."

Dhoni-led CSK have won three out of their five fixtures in IPL 2023. They occupy the third spot in the points table. While their batting has looked very good, their bowlers need to be more disciplined whereas their fielding has also been ordinary so far.

IPL 2023: 'Shouldn't go to a stage where MS Dhoni...: Virender Sehwag's STERN WARNING to CSK after RCB win

Recently, Simon Doull -- former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator -- made heads turn with his alleged controversial statement on Pakistan. In a recent statement that went viral, it was believed that the New Zealander, who is popular for his commentary stints worldwide, opened up on his experience in Pakistan and said 'living in Pakistan is like being in a jail'.

While Doull's alleged statement spread like wildfire on social media platforms, he recently opened up on the claims and slammed the fake remark. The fake quote was attributed to Geo News which stated, "Living in Pakistan is like living in jail. I was not allowed to go out as Babar Azam fans were waiting for me. And I stayed in Pakistan without food for many days. Even I was mentally tortured, but by the grace of God, I somehow escaped from Pakistan."

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is producing thrilling contests with each passing day.
Both KKR and SRH are coming into this fixture on the back of impressive wins. While KKR pulled off a hiest to beat Gujarat Titans, chasing 29 off the last six balls in Ahmedabad, SRH finally managed to open their account with a home victory over Punjab. KKR will depend on their spinners but need more from their batters. Similarly, SRH have one of the most balanced squads but need to take the pressure off Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi with the bat. Will Harry Brooks finally get going? Will Andre Russell put on a show? Only time will tell...

IPL 2023: Mohit Sharma reflects on happy return to action, says 'It's not a bad thing to be a net bowler'

Punjab Kings (PBKS) lost their second game in a row when they hosted the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in match 18 of the IPL 2023 edition, on Thursday evening (April 13). Being asked to bat first, Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab managed a moderate 153 for 8 and while they gave it all with the ball, stretching the game till the last over, the hosts eventually lost by six wickets on the penultimate ball of the contest.

However, Punjab pacer Kagiso Rabada had something to cheer for as he became the fastest bowler to enter the 100-wicket club in IPL history. He surpassed IPL legend and former Mumbai Indians (MI) speedster Lasith Malinga in the list. The premier South African pacer reached the milestone in just 64 innings, leaving behind Malinga who attained the feat in 70 innings.

PBKS vs GT: Rabada goes past Malinga to become fastest bowler to enter 100-wicket club in IPL

Gujarat Titans (GT) edged past Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 18 of the IPL 2023 edition on Thursday evening (April 13), at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Opting to bowl first, GT restricted Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab for 153 for 8 courtesy of Mohit Sharma's 2 for 18. In reply, GT dominated the run-chase for a large part but Punjab bowlers stretched the game till the final over where Rahul Tewatia's timely hit (5 not out off 2 balls) propelled the defending champions to a six-wicket win with a ball to spare.

From GT, opener Shubman Gill top-scored with a 49-ball 67. While he continues to grow in stature with his consistency, questions still arise on his ability to finish a run-chase and strike big towards the latter stage of the innings. He reached 35 off 22 balls but slowed down considerably, with GT losing Sai Sudharshan and captain Hardik Pandya, during the fag end of the run-chase. As a result, Gill took another 18 balls to get to his fifty. Holding one end, he was expected to complete the run-chase but got dismissed in the final over, by Sam Curran, with GT still requiring six off four balls.

Thus, former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has schooled Gill and asked him to take a leaf out of MS Dhoni, one of the greatest finishers of all-time.

Manjrekar, in conversation with ESPNCricinfo, said, "Champion teams are those who are mindful of their weak areas even when winning matches and tackle the same. Against KKR, there was a clear lesson for Gujarat that on the good pitch don’t play with only five bowlers."

Sai Sudharsan scored at a strike rate of around 100. David Miller was also rather quiet."

Gill, too, spoke about his innings and said after the match, "It got slower with the old ball. So we needed to get off to a good start in the powerplay. We lost a bit of momentum when Hardik bhai got out. It wasn't a big score but it was important to rotate the strike and not have dot balls."

At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... It would have been a tough pill to swallow if the game had gone the other side. I would like to finish the game earlier, not a big fan of taking it to the last over."

IPL 2023: GT skipper Hardik Pandya fined for slow over-rate in PBKS win; joins Sanju Samson in offence

After leading Rajasthan Royals (RR) to a three-run win over his former franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2023, on Wednesday (April 12), R Ashwin was fined 25 per cent of his match fees for breaching IPL Code of Conduct. Ashwin, who was awarded the Player-of-the-Match for his 30 (22) and 2 for 25 (4) in Chennai, criticised select decisions made by the umpires in the ongoing season and, thus, paid a heavy price for it.

'Some of the decisions have left me a little flummoxed'

After the match, Ashwin said, "I'm quite surprised the umpires changed the ball for dew on their own. It's never happened before and I'm quite surprised." He added, "Some of the decisions in this year's IPL on the field have left me a little flummoxed, to be honest. It left me flummoxed in a good or bad way because what you need is a little bit of balance. We're going as a bowling team and we're not asking for the ball to be changed. But the ball was changed on the umpire's accord. What reason - I did ask the umpire but he said we can change it.

“So I hope every time there's dew they can change it - every single time going forward in this IPL. You can do whatever you want but you need to be standard," Ashwin concluded.

IPL 2023: CSK fans, look away! MS Dhoni walks in pain after Chennai's RR loss - Watch

Match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) hold their nerves to beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three runs in front of their home crowd, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday (April 12). In a game that went down to the wire, RR pacer Sandeep Sharma defended five off the last ball, with a perfect yorker to MS Dhoni as CSK fell short by a whisker.

Being asked to bat first, RR rode on Jos Buttler's 52, Devdutt Padikkal's 38, and 30 apiece from R Ashwin and Shimron Hetymer to post 175 for 8. In reply, CSK looked down and out needing 54 off the last 18 deliveries with Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. The duo hit the second gear in style to bring down the equation to 21 off 6 balls.

He was later taken to the cleaners by Dhoni, who slammed two sixes as the equation read seven off the last three balls. However, Sandeep bowled a couple of toe-crushing yorkers to take his side past the finish line.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will play host to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 17 of the IPL 2023 on Wednesday (April 12), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Chennai have so far won twice and lost a game after three complete encounters and occupy the fifth spot in the points table. They will aim for their third win on the trot, after losing the season-opener, on home ground and give a memorable gift to their legendary captain MS Dhoni.

It is to be noted that 41-year-old Dhoni will be playing his 200th game as CSK captain in the IPL. Dhoni has led in 213 matches (leading the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in 13 matches in IPL 2016) overall in the IPL, winning 125 and losing 87 with a win percentage of 58.96. No other captain has even touched the 150-mark with Mumbai Indians' (MI) Rohit Sharma -- the most successful IPL captain with five titles -- coming second (146 games). Thus, the Yellow Army will be desperate to win the face-off versus Sanju Samson-led RR, who occupy the second spot in the overall standings, for Thala Dhoni.

IPL 2023: MS Dhoni given special 'Guard of Honour' to mark 200th appearance as CSK skipper | WATCH

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) great Chris Gayle has fired a warning at Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner despite his 51-run knock against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner was accused of slow batting by Gayle while also highlighting that he is putting pressure on him and the other batters due to his approach. Delhi failed to register their first win of the IPL 2023 after they lost on the last ball of the contest against Mumbai on Tuesday, April 11.

"In the first six overs, he showed a bit of intent and tried to be positive there. The wicket was very good to bat on in the powerplay. But he is putting a lot of pressure on himself and the other players as well. Players feel they have to come while he is not getting to ball away, they pretty much have to go from ball one and that is causing Delhi a lot of problems in the middle," Gayle told the digital broadcasters.

According to Gayle, Warner needs to go all guns blazing while attacking from the start. Warner scored a fifty on Tuesday but was not enough for his side as they lost on the final ball of the match.

"So that’s something he needs to work on. He is experienced enough to know what to do. He spoke about it in the previous game," he added.

While Warner has been far from his best, vice-captain for the season, Axar Patel came in defense of Warner and highlighted how he is working on his approach.
"Even when he is trying, it's not coming off. Everyone spoke to him - Ricky, (Shane) Watson, Dada. The conversation about his strike rate also came up. They looked at his videos and he's working on it," Axar said.

IPL 2023 updated points table: Latest standings after DC vs MI match, orange cap and purple cap holders

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have so far played three games and won two of them in IPL 2023. The MS Dhoni-led Yellow Army occupy the fifth spot at present and will host the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in match 17 on Wednesday evening (April 12). While CSK have got off to a decent start, there are many injury concerns for the Dhoni-led franchise. While Moeen Ali was unwell and missed their previous game, versus Mumbai Indians (MI), Ben Stokes is also not fully fit and set to miss a few more games.

In addition, Deepak Chahar somehow managed to bowl just one over in CSK's seven-wicket win over MI on April 08, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. He suffered a hamstring injury and is set to miss CSK's upcoming games. In IPL 2022, he missed the entire season due to back injury and has been out of action for Team India as well since December 2022. Injuries -- mainly back and hamstring issues -- have dented Chahar's run in the past few years and former India head coach Ravi Shastri blasted the CSK pacer.

Ahead of CSK versus RR, in Chennai, Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo's T20 Time Out, "Let us put it this way: There are quite a few players who have become permanent residents of the NCA. Soon they will get a residence permit there, allowing them to walk in any time they want. And it is not a good thing. It's unreal. I mean, you are not playing that much cricket to be injured again and again. You can't even play four matches on the trot. Then why are you going to NCA for? I mean you come back and after three matches you are back there."

I mean, it's just four overs, and in three hours the game is over. It's ridiculous."

While nothing is known about Chahar's injury right now, he is set to miss more than a couple of games for CSK and is participation in the remainder of IPL 2023 is also under dark clouds.

Match 15 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by one wicket, on the final ball of a contest that went down to the wire. Opting to bowl, KL Rahul & Co. were in for the leather hunt courtesy of Virat Kohli's 61 (44), Faf du Plessis' 79* off 46 and Glenn Maxwell's 29-ball 59 as RCB posted a mammoth 212 for 2. In reply, LSG rode on fifties from Marcus Stoinis 65 (30) and Nicholas Pooran's 62 (19) to take their side home in a thrilling clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

The clash saw a 115-metre six, fifties from all the big hitters, a last-over finish, a hit-wicket, failed attempt at running the non-striker out for backing too far. There was sheer chaos at the iconic ground, in front of a jam-packed stadium, with emotions flying high among players and fans. Gautam Gambhir, LSG's team mentor, was at his aggressive best after his side's favourable result and even silenced the Chinnaswamy crowd with a finger-on-lips gesture. After the match, Gambhir even shared an intense handshake with Kohli but the duo shared a warm hug when they met each other in the dressing room.

IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians win final-over thriller to clinch first win of season, beat DC by six wickets

Former India coach Ravi Shastri predicted that Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill might surpass Virat Kohli's mark of 973 runs scored in a single Indian Premier League season.

Kohli achieved the milestone in IPL 2016, where he slammed 973 runs at an average of 81.08. Gill completed 2,000 runs in IPL on Sunday. He accomplished this milestone during his side's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In the match, Shubman played a handy knock of 39 runs in 31 balls. His knock consisted of five boundaries. His runs came at a strike rate of 125.81. In his 77 matches in IPL career, which has seen him represent Gujarat and formerly Kolkata Knight Riders, Gill has scored 2,016 runs at an average of 32.52. He has scored his runs at a strike rate of 126.24. Fifteen half-centuries have come out of his bat in IPL with the best score of 96.

Gill's best season came last year when he played a key role in Gujarat Titans' triumph in their maiden IPL 2022 season. Last season, he scored 483 runs in 16 innings at an average of 34.50. He scored four half-centuries last season, with the best score of 96.

"If we look at what's happened till now, then the two left-handers, Tilak Varma and Sudharshan, one is 20 years old, the other is 21, they have been a lot of fun to watch. Because they seem to have a future, their temperament and maturity which we can see shows the potential they have to be good players," Shastri told Star Sports.

Tilak Varma was the find of the season for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022. He scored 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of over 36 and SR of over 131 with two fifties and the best score of 61. In the first game of IPL 2023, he scored an unbeaten 84* off 46 balls against RCB in a losing cause, carrying the entire MI batting line-up on his back.

In 37 T20s, he has scored 1,159 runs at an average of 38.63 with a strike rate of over 139.30. His best score in the format is 84*. He has 10 half-centuries in the format.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also gave his opinion on who has impressed him the most in the IPL 2023.

"One is definitely Tilak Varma, he has impressed us a lot. He batted well last year and has performed this year as well. Even his attitude is very good. He looks like he can be a leader in the future. And the second is Jurel, the way Jurel has batted from his first innings, I couldn't even imagine the quality of his shots under pressure. So that is one boy who has impressed, even though it's still in the early stages, but these are promising signs."

Shastri was asked what was special about Vijay Shankar that got him selected for the 2019 ICC Men's ODI World Cup.

He said the player was picked up both for his bowling and batting abilities.

"In my opinion, the selectors thinking was such that, just like his innings that we have seen in this year's IPL, that kind of innings plus his bowling is a big factor in his getting selected. When he got injured during the 2019 World Cup, he got a fracture on his toe and was out for a long time. He has the talent, he has worked hard to get back to his best, and you know, at that time even Hardik was facing a lot of injury issues, so India was looking for a player who could replace Hardik and give at least two or three overs to the team and bat well, so it was always to keep Shankar ready in case Hardik got injured so that there was a quality replacement."

Shastri also spoke on who may break Virat Kohli's record for the most runs in a single season.

Shastri said it has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs.

"I feel it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point in time only he will already have 300-400 runs. According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900 plus runs is huge but one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so opening batsmen can only break this record if it is possible."

IPL 2023: Ravi Shastri picks THIS batter to break Virat's long-standing run record, says 'he is in good form'

Virat Kohli has so far scored two fifties in three games for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023. The three-time runners-up will rely on Kohli throughout the season as they look to end their IPL-trophy drought this time around in IPL 2023. In 2016 edition, the then RCB skipper Kohli was in sublime form as he ended with a whopping 973 runs in 16 games -- including four centuries - as he took his franchise to the final, where they lost to the eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Kohli's 973 runs remains the most scored by a batter in any IPL season. Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri named India's young star Shubman Gill, who represents the one-time winners Gujarat Titans (GT), to break Kohli's massive IPL record.

Speaking during a Q/A session on Star Sports, Shastri said, "He has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel it is Shubman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays at the top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs."

Gill has so far scored 116 runs, including a fifty, at a strike rate of 145. Meanwhile, Gill-starrer GT have won twice and lost a game after three encounters as they occupy the fourth spot in the points table.

Will in-form Gill break Kohli's record in IPL 2023 or the upcoming seasons? Only time will tell...

What was the controversy?

In the 11th over of the RCB innings, Mishra took over the initiative as LSG struggled for wickets as the hosts were 96/0. While Virat and Faf du Plessis looked nailed on for a 100-run stand, the former India skipper was dismissed by Mishra on 61 runs. However, in a video that has surfaced on the internet, Mishra was seen making use of the saliva on the ball in the same over.

According to the latest rules, with effect from October 1, 2022, the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to permanently ban the use of saliva to polish the ball. The prohibition has been in place in international cricket for over two years as a preventive measure against the spread of Covid-19. While announcing several changes to its Playing Conditions, the ICC considered it "appropriate for the ban to be made permanent.”

So if Amit Mishra is found to have made use of saliva to gain an unfair advantage, the IPL disciplinary committee could take action against him. However, at this point, there is no complaint to the match referee and the officials and Mishra could escape punishment.

IPL 2023: Amit Mishra caught using saliva on ball in RCB vs LSG contest; dismisses Virat Kohli 2 balls later

KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 15 of the IPL 2023 on Monday (April 10) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Opting to bowl first, LSG were in for the leather hunt as fifties from Faf du Plessis (79*), Virat Kohli (61) and Glenn Maxwell (59) took RCB to 212 for 2. In reply, LSG rode on Marcus Stoinis' 65 (30), Nicholas Pooran's 62 (19) and Ayush Badoni's 30 (24) to chase down the total on the last ball of the contest with one wicket to spare.

While LSG eventually won the game, they were nowhere in the hunt being reduced to 23 for 3 in no time during the powerplay overs. Skipper Rahul didn't hog much of the strike but went at a very slow pace throughout the first ten overs. The right-hander was 17 (18) after the halfway mark of LSG's run-chase with Marcus Stoinis doing the bulk of the scoring. After Stoinis fell, Rahul also departed for an unimpressive 18 (20) and was slammed for his inning left, right and centre on social media platforms.

Dodda Ganesh, India's former pacer, also joined the bandwagon and slammed Rahul for his snail-paced knock in what was a high-scoring thriller in Bengaluru on Monday evening. Taking to his official Twitter handle, Ganesh wrote, "This innings from KL Rahul has to be the most hideous innings played in the history of IPL ever considering the context of the game. Man. What’s in his mind? Seriously. This can’t happen for so long at this level. It’s not school cricket."

He added, "Not one shot with intent from KL Rahul in the PP while chasing 213. Don’t know what’s in his mind. You simply can’t bat like this #IPL2023"

'Most HIDEOUS innings in IPL' - Ex-India pacer RIPS APART Rahul for his snail-paced knock in LSG-RCB tie

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will host the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 15 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, on Monday evening (April 10). The match will be held at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru as the home crowd will hope for the Virat Kohli-starrer to return to winning ways after a hammering received at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in their previous game.

RCB opened their campaign in IPL 2023 with an eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at home. On the road, they faced KKR who dismissed them for 123 in pursuit of 205. With the heavy loss, RCB are now languishing at the seventh spot -- with a poor Net Run Rate (NRR) of -1.256, and needs to stage a comeback at the earliest.

LSG, on the other hand, started with a 50-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Lucknow and lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 12 runs in Chennai. Returning to home conditions, they hammered SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) by five wickets. They occupy the third spot at present.

BCCI have made it at par with USA's NFL: Former Pak spinner slams Md Rizwan's comments on PSL vs IPL

Virat Kohli opened his campaign in IPL 2023 with a superb 49-ball 82 not out in Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) season-opener, versus the Mumbai Indians (MI) at home.
With KKR spinners, Varun Chakravarthy (4 for 15), Sunil Narine (2 for 16) and Suyash Sharma (3 for 30) shining with the ball, RCB folded for 123 in 17.4 overs to lose by 81 runs. After the clash, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif spoke about Kohli's failure and shared an unheard tale.

'I’m going to...': Md Kaif recalls when RCB star Virat Kohli threw his bat in anger after getting out cheaply

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by a whopping 81-run margin in their first home game of IPL 2023, on Thursday evening (April 06). After a seven-run loss (DLS method), to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their season-opener, Nitish Rana-led KKR made a spirited comeback from reeling at 89 for 5 to post 204/7 and dismissed RCB for a paltry 123 in 17.4 overs.

While KKR spinners -- Sunil Narine (2 for 16), Varun Chakaravarthy (4 for 15), and Suyash Sharma (3 for 30) -- starred with the ball by sharing nine scalps, it was pace-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur who set the game with a blistering 29-ball 68 and also returned with 1 for 15. After the flop show of KKR's top order, Shardul went bonkers from one end and stitched a match-winning 103-run stand with Rinku Singh (33-ball 46).

KKR eventually won by a huge margin with Nitish Rana marshalling his troops nicely, he was slammed by Little Master Sunil Gavaskar for his poor shot selection. The KKR stand-in captain managed a 5-ball 1 after he went for a reverse sweep, off Michael Bracewell, when his side was already reduced to 46 for 2 after six overs and was in need of a big partnership. Thus, Gavaskar slammed Rana and said on-air, "What kind of shot was that from KKR captain? He didn't connect at all. And as a captain, I think that shot was completely avoidable."

After winning his first game as an IPL skipper, Rana will breathe a sigh of relief. However, he will be wary of the fact that KKR needs big runs from him in order to keep going ahead in the tournament.

Credit should also be given to Rinku as he played second fiddle to Thakur and paced his innings well. Umesh and Southee started decently with the ball. Then, our spinners bowled really well.
