Rajasthan Royals batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has come of age in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-hander, who was first picked by Rajasthan Royals after his exploits at the U-19 World Cup 2020 for India, has taken the 2023 season by storm and is on third place on the most run-getters list.

Jaiswal has 575 runs in 13 games he has played so far which is just one run shy of second-placed Shubman Gill. Had Jaiswal not gotten out on a duck in his last innings and had scored runs equal to his average this season - 47.9 (~48), he would have been near top-placed Faf du Plessis, who has hit 631 runs this season.

However, it is not just the amount of runs Jaiswal has scored but the pace at which he has done as well that has surprised everyone. Jaiswal has scored his runs in 2023 at a strike rate of 166.2 while his strike rate in previous two seasons were 132.99 and 148.21 in 2022 and 2021, respectively.

Jaiswal's average has also nearly doubled to 48 in 2023 from 25.8 in 2022 and 24.90 in 2021. Collectively, Jaiswal had scored 547 runs from his inaugural season in 2020 to 2022 at a strike rate of 134 and an average of mere 23.78. Clearly, Jaiswal in 2023 has found his rhythm and his dominance on the field has also led to the calls of including him the Indian side as soon as possible.

Breaking down Yashasvi Jaiswal's batting in IPL 2023

As mentioned above, Jaiswal has scored his runs at much higher pace this season than the previous three seasons. It's not like that he was batting slowly last couple of seasons but he wasn't able to accelerate after getting decent starts in the powerplay. This year though, Jaiswal has gone berserk not even in the first 10 balls but after that as well.

During the first 10 balls (or less) in all the matches Jaiswal has batted in, he has scored 221 runs collectively off 113 balls at a strike rate of 194.6! He has also hit 31 fours and 12 sixes during that time, which means one boundary every 2.5 balls.

Coming to the second part of his innings, that is, 11-25 balls, Jaiswal has managed to score 172 runs off 115 balls at a strike rate of 149 with 25 fours and five sixes. He also has been dismissed only twice between ball 11 to 25, which means once he gets to play 10 balls, he ensures that the innings is a big one and the opportunity does not go waste.

From balls 26 to 40, Jaiswal has scored 114 runs off 85 balls at a strike rate of 134 - his slowest phase and yet better than Virat Kohli's overall strike rate (133) this season. And once Jaiswal goes past 40 balls, done thrice this season, he has gone bonkers hitting 64 runs off just 25 balls at a strike rate of 256.

How has Yashasvi Jaiswal batted in Powerplay, middle and end overs?

A batsman's pace of innings truly can be judged by how he has batted in the middle overs when the field has been spread and there are less gaps to find the boundaries. Let's see how Jaiswal has fared in those situations:

Jaiswal comes as an opener which means that he always gets to play in the powerplay - the best batting conditions in the match - and he has taken full advantage of that, giving quickfire starts to his team.

Out of 13 times Jaiswal has batted, he has ensured to stay after the powerplay seven times, thus making sure there's least pressure on the next batsman to score quickly when he comes in to bat. The southpaw has scored 338 runs off 189 balls in the powerplay at a whopping strike rate of 178 and an average of 56.33.

Jaiswal has also hit 52 fours and 14 sixes in the powerplay which translates to one boundary (either four or six) every 2.86 balls.

After powerplay, Jaiswal has scored 190 runs off 136 balls at a strike rate of 139 and an average of 38. The numbers are clearly less than the powerplay ones, but any team would happily take the runs at the strike of 140 if offered an opportunity. In terms of boundaries, Jaiswal has hit 25 of them - 17 fours and eight sixes - which means one boundary every ~6 balls.

Now, there's no team in the world, let alone IPL, that will get one boundary every over from 7 to 15. In the final five overs, Jaiswal has batted only once - during his 124 off 62 against MI - and has scored 47 runs in 18 balls at a strike rate of 261 with the help of five fours and four sixes.

Conclusion

Clearly, Jaiswal has become matured in his approach season by season and in the current one, he has ensured that once there's a start, he doesn't let it go and turns it into a big innings.

Rajasthan, thanks to Jaiswal to some extent, has won its six games - and every single one when Jaiswal has hit a fifty - four times this season. The Royals, however, had lost when Jaiswal turned his fifth fifty into a hundred, but that's not the batsman because he had done all he could to take his team past 200 but MI were just too good on the day.

Explained: From powerplay basher to able enforcer! Yashasvi Jaiswal's IPL 2023 success decoded

Match 63 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Supr Giants (LSG) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by five runs in a crucial clash with the race for the playoffs getting intense with each passing game. Lucknow, who were asked to bat first, were off to a poor start as they were reduced to 12 for 2, and further to 35 for 3, before Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis blasted an impressive 47-ball 89 not out to take his side to a competitive 177 for 3.

In reply, Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise were scoring briskly and their openers Ishan Kishan (59) and Hitman (37) added 90 runs for the first wicket before LSG bowlers -- spinners Ravi Bishnoi (2 for 26) and skipper Krunal (1 for 27) -- put a brake on the scoring rate and twin strikes from Yash Thakur and a brilliant last over from Mohsin Khan enabled LSG to a stunning five-run win in Lucknow.

During the game, Stoinis entertained the Lucknow fans with his big hits and even got a standing ovation from LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir for his onslaught versus the five-time champions. He tore apart Chris Jordan as he slammed the English pacer for 24 runs -- with three fours and two sixes -- to light up the atmosphere and earn applause from the LSG dugout.

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Stoinis said, "Great moment. He hasn't played here from a long time, a big moment for Mohsin, especially bowling the final over after being injured. It was very close, there are a lot of things not going your way. IPL 2023: Marcus Stoinis gets standing ovation from LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir during onslaught vs MI - Watch

Suryakumar Yadav had a slow start to IPL 2023 edition but has rapidly shifted gears since then. He started the season with scores of 15, 1, 0, 43, 7 before coming to his own and has hit strokeful knocks of 57, 23, 55, 66, 26, 83 and 103* as he sits at the fifth position in the list of batters with most runs in IPL 2023, with 479 runs at a strike rate of 190.84 along with one century and four fifties. He has been one of the main reasons for MI's comeback as Rohit Sharma & Co. occupy the third spot in the points table and have a real chance of ending in the top two.

Ahead of MI's crucial face-off versus the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), in match 63 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday (May 16), dashing former Indian opener Virender Sehwag urged MI to make in-form SKY a permanent at No. 3 spot in the batting order. Surya started the season at No. 4 before taking the No. 3 spot in MI's seven-wicket win versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at home, in match 22 (where he was the stand-in captain). He batted at No. 4 in the following game before once again coming one down since the last two fixtures.

"SKY can be the permanent No. 3 for Mumbai Indians because he's a good player of pace and spin. Although it all boils down to the team management (when it comes to taking such decisions), but I strongly believe he should get to face more balls," Sehwag said on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

Since SKY has returned with 83 (35) and 103* (49) in his last two outings at No. 3, he seems likely to continue in the same position in the upcoming games.

People weren't counting this MI after it was on a losing streak in the first phase of the competition, but once it returned to the winning ways, there was no stopping this side. It can also finish the league stage among the top two. If MI wins the remaining two games, it will get 18 points. IPL 2023: Virender Sehwag urges MI to make Suryakumar Yadav permanent at No. 3

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost match 61 of the IPL 2023 edition as the four-time winners went down to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets, at home, on Sunday evening (May 14). Despite the loss, the Yellow Army remain at the second spot -- with 15 points from 13 games -- and are expected to reach the playoffs. After the loss, CSK took a lap at the ground to acknowledge their ardent fans for their constant support as it was their last league game at home.

After the lap taken by Dhoni & Co., talks regarding the 41-year-old's IPL future once again commenced in the cricketing world. The CSK skipper has not said anything about his IPL future but it is widely believed that he is playing his last season. Thus, former England captain-turned-commentator Kevin Pietersen joined the bandwagon and spoke at length on Dhoni's IPL future. He believes that he will be extremely surprised if Dhoni retires after the 2023 edition.

"I was there for Dhoni’s lap of honour on Sunday, and it was incredible to see how the stadium stayed completely full. I'd be extremely surprised if this is his last season. I think this impact player rule actually helps him tremendously, where he can keep for 20 overs and bat wherever he wants to bat,” Pietersen wrote in his column for Betway.

He further asserted, "He makes the team better with the decisions he makes as a captain, and his keeping has been tremendous. It’s not like he takes a batting position up, because he tends to come in at seven, eight or nine to whack a few deliveries."

Pietersen added, "He’ll have the opportunity for eight or nine months of rest, sort his knee out, and get himself fit and ready for another season. I hope it's not the last we see of Dhoni, and I know everybody in the country would want him to play another season."

CSK will now travel to the national capital to take on the hosts Delhi Capitals (DC) in their last league game. They will aim for a win to ensure a top-two finish in the points table. Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator will take place in Chennai whereas Ahmedabad will host Qualifier 2 and the final, on May 28.

IPL 2023: 'Would be extremely surprised' - Kevin Pietersen shares his take on MS Dhoni's future

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost their last home game of IPL 2023 to two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match 61 on Sunday evening (May 14), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. With a win, CSK would have qualified for the playoffs but will now have to wait for another game, their last league stage encounter, to book a slot in the top four.

After CSK's last home game in the league stage, Dhoni & Co. took a lap around the ground for their ardent fans who have turned up in large numbers at the Chepauk this season. The main reason for CSK fans coming to the stadium was that they believe this will be Dhoni's last IPL season.

In this regard, former Indian batter Mohammed Kaif feels the ex-Indian captain is surely playing his last IPL edition and he has dropped enough hints as well.

"I think MSD has given enough hints that this is his last IPL. He's keeping the world guessing and that's been his nature. But I have this intuition that Dhoni will not be playing the IPL next year," Kaif said while speaking on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

On the other hand, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan believes Dhoni will return in IPL 2024. In a video shared by CSK's official Twitter handle, he said, "We believe MS Dhoni is going to play next season as well, so I hope fans will continue to support us like every time."

At present, CSK occupy the second spot in the IPL 2023 points table with 15 points from 13 games. They will now take on the bottom-ranked, and already-eliminated, Delhi Capitals (DC), in the national capital on May 20 (Saturday) in a bid to enter the playoffs with a top-two finish.

PBKS deliver KO to DC’s playoff hopes

Chasing 168 runs, DC made a perfect start before a titanic collapse saw them restricted to 136/8. Openers David Warner (54) and Philip Salt (21) stitched an opening partnership of 69 runs, but after that, there was not much joy for the hosts. The collapse saw them score 67 runs in the remainder of the contest and ultimately lose the contest by 31 runs.

The likes of Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw, Axar Patel and Manish Pandey were big failures in the middle order which led to the debacle of DC and ended on the losing side. Harpreet Brar was the pick of the bowlers as he ended with 30/4 in his four overs, while Nathan Ellis and Rahul Chahar both ended with two wickets each in the contest.

IPL 2023: Suryakumar Yadav's impressive ton powers MI to third in standings, beat GT by 27 runs

Virat Kohli remains the face of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In IPL history, Kohli is the only player to have played for a single franchise. He was part of the RCB camp in the inaugural edition, in 2008, after his heroics with the U-19 team. Since then, he has remained loyal to the franchise and represented them with several memorable performances over the years.

In a recent chat, Kohli stated that he feels fortunate to have been playing for one franchise from day one of the cash-rich league. "I feel really fortunate to have played for one franchise from day one," Kohli told RCB. He further asserted, "It's been a constant relationship based on trust from both ends that we are working for the same thing and the value that I have seen fans connecting with me very organically is because of the fact that we play the game for the right reasons."

IPL 2023: Yuzvendra Chahal leapfrogs Dwayne Bravo to become highest wicket-taker in IPL history

Delhi Capitals (DC) lost by 27 runs to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 55 of the IPL 2023 edition. With this loss, David Warner & Co. have now lost seven games in this year's season and continue to remain at the bottom, with eight points from 11 games. With defeat to CSK, DC are near an early elimination and former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra made a big prediction on Delhi camp's future.

Chopra feels some big changes are on the cards in the DC camp post their disappointing run in IPL 2023. As they are nearing elimination, and can well end at the bottom, the former Indian cricketer believes the one-time runners-up might have to change their coaching staff and captain for next season.

"Delhi - I feel the season is over now because you will be able to reach 14 points and your net run rate is very ordinary in any case. It is probably the time for churning there. Delhi might have to change their coaching staff and captain in the coming year," said Chopra on his Youtube channel.

He further opined, "If they don't do that, I will be extremely surprised. This is just my personal opinion. Nothing against anyone to be very honest, but this year's strategies have been slightly beyond my understanding. When Delhi look back and see, they should definitely ask the question that what their players did was on one side, but what is your think tank doing? You don't use Axar Patel properly. You played Sarfaraz Khan, then dropped him and after that, he was in and out."

"You played Priyam Garg an odd match. Aman Khan plays well and you dropped him down the order. You played Lalit Yadav but you kept him down the order and sent Ripal Patel ahead of them. What are you doing? Sometimes it just defies logic," added Chopra.

Ricky Ponting-coached DC, who had fair success from IPL 2019 to 2022, have never looked their part this season. While they have bounced back of late, with four wins from their last six encounters, they are at the bottom for their poor start and poor tactics (in terms of usage of players, team combination, etc.)

DC will now face the Punjab Kings (PBKS), at home, on Saturday (May 13).

Mumbai Indians (MI) chased down another score in excess of 200, third overall, in this year's IPL in match 54 when they hosted the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (May 09). Suryakumar Yadav's 35-ball 83 and Nehal Wadhera's 34-ball 52 not out propelled the five-time winners to a stunning six-wicket win, in pursuit of 200, as they now jump to the third spot in the points table.

While MI are slowly but surely coming to their best as the playoffs nears, they are sweating over captain Rohit Sharma's poor form. He has so far only managed 191 runs in 11 games, at a strike rate of 124.83. He failed to cross the single-digit mark for the fifth time in a row after his eight-ball seven in the MI-RCB clash on Tuesday evening.

During his impressive 140-run second-wicket stand with Nehal, SKY dominated proceedings as his inning was laced with 7 fours and 6 sixes at a whopping strike rate of 237.14.

After his dismissal, Sourav Ganguly -- former Indian captain and BCCI chief -- lauded SKY and tweeted, ""Surya Kumar yadav the best T20 player in the world .. it seems he bats on a computer .. @surya_14kumar @mipaltan"

Match 53 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Monday evening (May 08). Opting to bat first, Shikhar Dhawan & Co. rode on the captain's 47-ball 57 and cameos from Harpreet Brar, Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan to post 179/7.

In reply, Nitish Rana's KKR started well courtesy of Jason Roy's 24-ball 38 and were kept in the hunt courtesy of the skipper's 38-ball 51 before the finishing acts provided by Rinku Singh (21* off 10) and Andre Russell's 23-ball 42. With this win, KKR remain alive in the playoffs race and join as many as four more teams with ten points each.

Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) remain atop followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but there are many teams with ten points apiece whereas the bottom-two sides -- with eight points each -- are also not out of contention for the playoffs spot.

They miss their lengths and we could swing it around. Needing 30 off the final two, it was very gettable. I flicked one into the stands without really swinging at it. And that six over point put the icing on the cake. I wanted to finish the game off, but we have a finisher this year in Rinku. (On Rinku) He had told me what if the ball beats you, should we go for the run? I said for sure, I have faith in him to finish it last ball."

Will CSK captain MS Dhoni retire from IPL after 2023 edition? Suresh Raina gives massive update

Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson was saddened after the anti-climax end to the Indian Premier League (IPL) contest against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday. Samson, whose side was winning until the penultimate ball had to face a catastrophic defeat when Abdul Samad hit a six on a free hit, a consequence of a no-ball on the previous delivery. The defeat left RR in a vulnerable position, as they will now sit out of the top four by the time they take the field in their next encounter on Sunday, May 14.

"I was very confident with Sandeep. He has won us a game with almost a similar situation. He did it again today but that no-ball actually ruined our result," Samson said after the match while he spoke to the broadcasters.

"To be very honest, we all know that that's what IPL gives you. Matches like these, that's what makes IPL so special. You can never never never feel like you've won the game," added Samson.

RR were defending a target of 215 and thought they had won the contest when Sandeep Sharma bowled a dot ball on the final delivery of the innings when SRH needed five runs to win. However, in an extraordinary turn of events, the dot ball was deemed as a no-ball which left RR in a state of vulnerability. With four needed off the final ball, Sandeep got his proposed yorker wrong and was hit for six to hand a famous win to SRH at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

"It's a no-ball, you have to bowl it again, as simple as that. You don't think about it too much," Samson said when quizzed about how he reacted to having to regroup his troops.

"And I think Sandeep knows what to do. But definitely in the mindset there might be a small change for few seconds when you think the job is done. Almost everyone was celebrating.

"But that's the nature of the game. You can't step the line at that time in the game."

The defeat has increased pressure on RR as they will sit out of the top four with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in action on Monday against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). A win for PBKS will see RR drop out while a win for either Mumbai Indians (MI) or Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday could see them drop as low as sixth in the standings.

RR will take on RCB on Sunday as the business end of the IPL takes center stage as points will matter more than the performances.

IPL 2023: Samson brought to knees after Abdul Samad cameo, says 'that no-ball actually ruined our result'

Ravi Shastri advised Virat Kohli to not slow down once he gets his eye in during the ongoing IPL 2023 edition. Kohli has been one of Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) top performers with the bat, scoring 419 runs in 10 games (fifth-most overall), but his strike rate has not impressed many. He has struck at 135.16, but in his side's encounter versus the Delhi Capitals (DC), he slowed down considerably as his inning progressed and returned with a 46-ball 55 striking at 119.57. While he has hit six half-centuries this season, he has often been criticised for slowing down in the middle overs.

Addressing Kohli's strike rate concerns in IPL 2023, former India head coach Ravi Shastri told ESPNCricinfo, "Once you get in the tempo, don't worry about the others. That will be my message to Virat. In a T20 game, you don't need that many batsmen. If you are hot keep that going. If you get going, don't change your tempo; try and up the ante."

Shastri cited DC opener Philip Salt's example and said, "Prime example was Phil Salt. Once he got into the groove, he didn't let go. That is something that could be looked at from Virat's point of view."

In the RCB-DC clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Saturday (May 06), Faf du Plessis & Co. opted to bat first and posted 181-5 riding on Mahipal Lomror's 29-ball 54* and Kohli's 55. In reply, David Warner-led DC chased down the score in 16.4 overs with six wickets in hand. Salt led the charge with a solid 45-ball 87 along with cameos from Mitchell Marsh, Warner and Rilee Rossouw.

On the entire match, Shastri opined, "Delhi's combination was good. I guess the extra batter (Rilee Roussow ) coming in made a big difference. It allowed the batsman to go hammer and tong; they lost an early wicket. They also bowled well on that surface to restrict RCB. I think they were 20 short."

"Players like Dhoni, Kohli, they know that there's a camera on them all the time. And you deserve it for what you have done and achieved in the game. So you can get a lot of brownie points by just being smart on camera," Shastri added.

Kohli-starrer RCB occupy the fifth spot in the points table with ten points from as many games. They next face Mumbai Indians (MI), at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Tuesday evening (May 09).

I guess the extra batter (Rilee Roussow ) coming in made a big difference. It allowed the batsman to go hammer and tong; they lost an early wicket. They also bowled well on that surface to restrict RCB. I think they were 20 short." "Players like Dhoni, Kohli, they know that there's a camera on them all the time.

IPL 2023: Ravi Shastri shares words of wisdom for Virat Kohli over his strike rate concerns

In match 52 of the IPL 2023 edition, on Sunday (May 07), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. In the afternoon game, stand-in captain Krunal Pandya surprised many by opting to bat first. His bowlers were in for a leather hunt as Wriddhiman Saha's 43-ball 81 and Shubman Gill's 94 (51) propelled Gujarat to 227-2 in 20 overs. In reply, LSG only managed 171-7 to lose by a whopping 56-run margin.

During the run-chase, LSG were 102 for 1 at the halfway mark, courtesy of a rapid start from in-form opener Kyle Mayers (32-ball 48) and Quinton de Kock's 41-ball 70. However, they only managed 69 runs in the last ten overs. Many experts and former cricketers were left puzzled with LSG as they promoted Deepak Hooda at No. 3 instead of their in-form duo Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran. Thus, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag slammed the LSG think tank.

"They were 102/1 after 10 overs. They shouldn't have lost with this much of a margin after that. After that first wicket, I believe an in-form batter should've come; it could be Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya himself, or Ayush Badoni, who scored some very quick runs in the previous game against Chennai. And who came? Hooda," said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.

He further asserted, "They lost that match at that moment. It was a blunder from LSG. If Nicholas Pooran had come there, the way he plays, he could've probably scored a 20-ball 50 and changed the game. If you need 100 runs in five overs, you are not going to win."

“Ayush Badoni scored 21 off 11 balls. If he had arrived at the time, he could've increased the pace of scoring as well. Whose decision was that? Captain? Coach? or the management? Who sent Hooda at 3? It should've been an in-form batter there,” Sehwag added.

LSG occupy the third spot with 11 points from as many games. They next face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium on May 13.

Mumbai Indians' (MI) captain Rohit Sharma has been off colours in IPL 2023. He has so far only managed 184 runs in ten games at a strike rate of 126.89, along with one half-century (65). During commentary, Srikkanth took a jibe at the Indian captain Rohit and said, ‘No hit Sharma’." A lot has been said and written about Rohit. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody feels the Rohit looks 'mentally fatigued' and the scheduling of the tournament is probably catching up with him. On the other hand, after Jos Buttler's sublime 59-ball 95 in Rajasthan Royas (RR) home game versus SRH in match 52 of IPL 2023 on Sunday (May 07), formeer New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris asked Rohit to take a leaf out of Buttler's books.

Styris said on Jio Cinema on Sunday, "When you think about Jos Buttler, he is a player who knows he has the power game to comeback (after a slow start). We have been talking about it for a few games that Rohit Sharma needs to take a leaf out of that book. Exactly the innings that he should look to play. Take 20 balls and then go through the gears because Rohit Sharma is a talented man like Jos Buttler. Buttler showed maturity for Rajasthan."

Rohit-led MI occupy the sixth spot in the points table and will host Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 54 on Tuesday evening (May 09).

IPL 2023: 'Rohit should change his name to ‘NO HIT SHARMA’ - Srikkanth slams MI skipper amid his poor form

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has opened up on Mumbai Indians and India skipper Rohit Sharma’s form after the latter has been going through a tough phase of form. Rohit, who is yet to fire in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season has been at the gunpoint of several critics with Shastri mentioning different reasons for his debacle of form. Despite criticism, Rohit continues to take charge of the MI side while he will also lead India in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.

"The resources that you had two or three years ago isn't quite the same. The challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago when everything was nice, set - go out there and do the job," Shastri said about Rohit's captaincy while he spoke on ESPNcricinfo.

So far in the IPL 2023, Rohit has scored 184 runs with only fifty to his name and clearly has been a shadow of himself. He has averaged 18.40 so far in the IPL 2023 and has been striking at 127.

Interestingly, not since 2020 has Rohit hit multiple fifties in his IPL which is another major concern for the franchise and the India skipper.

"And then comes the challenge of how do you get them [the team] going, how do you motivate that bunch, how do you create a combination, how do you see who is the best in that lot to fit in and deliver at a certain stage of the game,” added Shastri.

Commentating at IPL, Shastri also believes the dip in form has taken its toll on the captaincy of Rohit. Mumbai Indians finished bottom of the IPL in 2022 standings while the current season is an upgrade but with ups and downs. They have not been in the top four of the IPL for the entire season and will need to finish strongly to claim a playoff berth.

"If you start getting on a purple patch where you are scoring runs, the job as a captain becomes much easier, the body language on the field changes, that energy on the field is different as opposed to when you are not getting runs. You can go flat no matter who you are," Shastri said.

Mumbai Indians and Rohit will next take the field on Tuesday against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium with a win for either side firing them to the top four.

IPL 2023: 'Challenges as a captain might have doubled' - Ravi Shastri points major reason for Rohit's debacle

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will face a tough prospect to make the playoff race after skipper KL Rahul was ruled out for the rest of the season from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra believes that Rahul’s injury could come as a blessing in disguise for South African star Quinton de Kock, who could be back in the Playing XI. According to Chopra, LSG might use the Protea as an option in the clash against Gujarat Titans to fill the void left by Rahul.

"KL Rahul is not there. I feel an amazing team will be fielded here. It is a day game and it might be a red-soil pitch, so they might want to play Mark Wood. We might see Quinton de Kock playing,” Chopra said while he spoke on his Youtube channel.

De Kock was an integral member of the LSG team in the 2022 season that saw them make the playoffs before bowing out against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator clash in Kolkata. De Kock amassed 508 runs in the 2022 edition which consisted of a hundred and three fifties with a best of unbeaten 140.

“I feel you should play Quinton de Kock and make your batting stronger because other than Ayush Badoni, the might has not been seen in Indian batting till now. Karun Nair has come in this team but the batting is weak. Marcus Stoinis, Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran have done well whenever they have gone away from home but there is no KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda hasn't fired yet,” said Chopra.

This season De Kock has found it hard to make the Playing XI after the rise of Caribbean star Kyle Mayers, who has been in excellent touch. So far in 10 matches he has scored 311 runs with a best of 73-run knock and includes four fifties. However, with Rahul out, the team management might fancy using De Kock as a proven opening batter option when they take on Gujarat Titans on Sunday afternoon at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

IPL 2023: Aakash Chopra makes BOLD prediction for THIS star ahead of GT vs LSG, says 'We might see him play'

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have continued their impressive run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they beat five-time champions Mumbai Indians by six wickets and 14 balls to spare. In a one-sided contest played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, CSK dominated with both bat and ball and boosted their prospects of a playoff spot. MI on the flip side will look at the contest as an opportunity missed to cement their place in the top four.

MI pay for poor show

Asked to chase 140, CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (30) and Devon Conway (44) gave a good start to the side before the former was scalped by Piyush Chawla. With the required rate of less than seven, MI found it hard to sustain a formidable batting line-up of CSK as Ajinkya Rahane (21) and Ambati Rayudu (12) helped Conway on their way to a big win.

Piyush Chawla was the pick of the bowlers as he ended with two wickets while Tristan Stubbs ended with a solitary dismissal of Rayudu.

CSK bank on good bowling display

Brilliant performance by bowlers, led by Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande helped Chennai Super Kings (CSK) restrict Mumbai Indians (MI) to a modest 139/8 in their 20 overs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Nehal Wadhera was the lone warrior for MI with his maiden IPL half-century.

Wadhera brought up his maiden IPL fifty in 46 balls, consisting of five fours and a six. Stubbs-Wadhera brought up their fifty-run stand in 39 balls.

The 54-run partnership between the duo was over after Matheesha Pathirana castled Wadhera for a well-made 64 off 51 balls after the ball hit his middle stump. MI was at 123/5 in 17.4 overs and ended at 139/8.

CSK will next take on Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, May 10 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before they face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the same venue next Sunday. Mumbai on the horizon will look to bounce back when they take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai before hosting Gujarat Titans next Friday.

IPL 2023: CSK earn statement win in Chepauk, beat arch-rivals MI by six wickets to boost playoff prospects

In match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hosted last year's runners-up Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Asked to bat first, Sanju Samson's RR posted 175-8. CSK eventually managed 172-6 but skipper MS Dhoni (17-ball 32*) and Ravindra Jadeja (15-ball 25*) gave RR a huge scare -- despite needing 54 off 18 balls -- before Sandeep Sharma had the last laugh in the final over.

CSK were way behind in the run-chase, requiring 59 off last 24, before Dhoni-Jadeja lit up the atmosphere with some big hits. The equation was 21 off the last six and many would have still backed Samson & Co. Sandeep, who went for only 13 off his two overs and claimed a wicket, started with two wides on the trot and conceded as many sixes successively before he bounced back in the final three balls to take his side to a narrow three-run win.

R Ashwin -- who returned with the Player-of-the-Match award (22-ball 30 & 2/25) in RR's win over CSK -- recently recalled Sandeep's dramatic last over and revealed the 'riskiest idea' which worked wonders for the pacer.

How the 'riskiest ball bailed Sandeep out of crisis

During a chat on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed, "Sandeep Sharma bowled that last over to Dhoni and he smashed him for two sixes. When you are defending 20 runs and when a guy like Dhoni has smashed you for 2 sixes, the odds of you coming out on top of that battle from there are literally none."

He added, "What’s the highest risk ball at this point?", I asked Sandeep." To this, he replied, "Slower length ball."

"I said, ‘You try bowling that to him now’. At the end of the day, at that point in time, it is the riskiest ball that the batter won’t be expecting. Because he knows that the bowler is under immense pressure," the RR spinner added.

At present, RR occupy the fourth position in the points table -- with ten points from nine games -- and host the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in match 48 of IPL 2023 on Friday evening (May 05).

How the 'riskiest ball bailed Sandeep out of crisis During a chat on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed, "Sandeep Sharma bowled that last over to Dhoni and he smashed him for two sixes. When you are defending 20 runs and when a guy like Dhoni has smashed you for 2 sixes, the odds of you coming out on top of that battle from there are literally none." He added, "What’s the highest risk ball at this point?", I asked Sandeep." To this, he replied, "Slower length ball." At the end of the day, at that point in time, it is the riskiest ball that the batter won’t be expecting. Because he knows that the bowler is under immense pressure," the RR spinner added. At present, RR occupy the fourth position in the points table -- with ten points from nine games -- and host the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in match 48 of IPL 2023 on Friday evening (May 05).

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 45 of IPL 2023 edition. The match was abandoned due to persistent rain as both sides shared a point each. Only 19.2 overs were possible in the match which saw Lucknow managing 125 for 7 courtesy of Ayush Badoni's 33-ball 59*. Earlier, CSK spinners Maheesh Theekshana, Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja put a brake on the scoring charts for LSG and reduced them to 62/5 in 14 overs before some counterattack from Badoni.

Nonetheless, there was not much for the fans as the match got abandoned whereas they could not get to see MS Dhoni bat. At the coin toss, former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Danny Morrison asked the CSK skipper about his IPL future. Morrison asked in a cheeky manner, "This wonderful swansong tour, your last, how are you enjoying it?" To this, the former Indian captain said, "Well you have decided it’s my last". The 41-year-old Dhoni's response went viral in no time.

Apart from the game, former Indian batter-turned-commentator Mohammed Kaif opined on Dhoni and said he is not playing this season as a player but as a mentor.

"Mahi is no longer playing as a player but as a mentor. He chooses the team. Let's get on the field. He does not tease the seniors much but keeps on teaching the youth all the time. He wants every player, playing under him, to perform well as it will make the team's job easier," Kaif said on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

Meanwhile, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh said on Dhoni's IPL future, "Only MS Dhoni knows when Dhoni will retire. I said last year that will play this year. I don't know if he will play next year as well. Yes, if he plays next year, the fans will be happy to see him playing. Fans have always wanted to see him playing."

In IPL 2023, Dhoni has not batted for a long period but looked good whenever he has gone out in the middle. In 35 balls, he has struck 74 runs at a strike rate of 211.43 along with 8 sixes. While the CSK legend has not made any official announcement regarding his IPL career, it is widely speculated that the ongoing edition will be his last. Nonetheless, India's former opener Virender Sehwag expressed his displeasure over the repetitive questions being asked to Dhoni about his IPL future.

'Why do you have to ask?': Virender Sehwag reacts as MS Dhoni continues to be asked about his IPL future

MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are modern-day legends of Indian cricket. Over the years, the two have been part of some glorious wins for Team India. The duo have been playing together for a long time, since their India A days, even before they became a regular for the senior team. While there have been the occasional differences in the past, with several reports of a rift between the two, they do share mutual respect for each other to date.

Recently, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan recalled how Gambhir's on-field tactics against Dhoni rattled the latter a few years back in the IPL. During IPL 2016 and 2017, Dhoni was struggling for runs when he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). In IPL 2016, he led the Pune franchise and his side was on the mat, in match 45, after opting to bat first in their away game versus Gambhir's Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata.

When Dhoni came out to bat, at 74-4, KKR skipper Gambhir brought in the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Suryakumar Yadav and Yusuf Pathan in close-in positions and operated with his top spinners Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla.
