Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) lost to bottom-ranked Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 44 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 02). Opting to bat first, David Warner-led Gujarat restricted Delhi to 130 for 8 with Mohammed Shami returning with 4 for 11. In reply, GT was tottering at 32 for 4 but came back in the contest with three successive sixes off Rahul Tewatia in the penultimate over before Ishant Sharma held his nerves and used all his experience to stun GT by five runs.

Tewatia, who has been going for the big shots from ball one this season, came out to bat in the 18th over with GT reduced to 94 for 5. He had a stern task in hand and was up for it as he came all guns blazing. The left-hander blasted three successive sixes off Anrich Nortje, in the 19th over, to bring down the equation to 12 off the last six deliveries, when it was 33 needed off the final 12 balls. Here's the video of Tewatia setting the stage on fire in the 19th over with his big hits:

Legendary India cricketer and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni came up with a cheeky reply on his retirement plans before the Indian Premier League (IPL) contest against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
What did Dhoni say?

Danny Morrison asked during the toss, "Clearly, This wonderful swansong tour, your last. How are you enjoying it?” To which Dhoni, after winning the toss had opted to field against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, replied, "You have decided it is my last IPL, not me."

The smiling India captain quickly dismissed any rumours of his retirement plans while still keeping options open for the future.

Dhoni has a rich legacy in IPL, he has scored 5052 runs in his 243 matches with an average of 39.47. Batting down the order, he has bagged 24 half-centuries, 348 fours and 237 sixes. His best individual score is 84*.

Dhoni is associated with CSK since the opening season of the rich-cash league, besides a two-season stint with now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant from 2016-17. He has a massive yellow army supporting him in every match, which breaks into cheers every time he walks onto the crease.

Starting the day with 13 wickets, Shami was seen in great touch with the new ball and got the better of Philip Salt (0) on the first ball of the innings. A calamity of the mixture also saw skipper David Warner (2) depart in the next over leaving DC in a vulnerable situation.

However, it was not before the partnership of Shami and Wriddhiman Saha started a nightmare for DC. Shami got the better of Rilee Rossouw (8) on the fifth ball of the third over while dismissing Manish Pandey on the first ball of the fourth over. Things only went better for the Indian star as he followed up with Priyam Garg’s dismissal on the final of the same over.

Interestingly, all three latter dismissals were caught behind as Shami and Saha were at the top of the game. The veteran star ended with figures of 11/4 which saw DC reduced to 23/5.

Shami now has 17 wickets in the IPL 2023 and went level with Tushar Deshpande of CSK while Punjab Kings (PBKS) star Arshdeep Singh, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) man Mohammed Siraj and Shami’s teammate Rashid Khan have 15 wickets each.

With GT sitting in pole position to make the Playoffs, Shami and Rashid will stand a better chance to improve their numbers and thereby stand a better chance of winning the Purple Cap this season. A win for GT will see them go on 14 points which will see them get closer to the last four spot.

IPL 2023: Mohammed Shami rips apart DC batting line-up to gain control of Purple Cap with four-fer

KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lost to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 43 of the IPL 2023 edition on Monday evening (May 01). Hosting the RCB franchise in Lucknow, LSG failed to chase down 127 and got bundled out for a paltry 108 in 19.5 overs. During the first half of the match, when RCB opted to bat first, Rahul injured himself while stopping a boundary. He was in severe pain and was taken off the field courtesy of the LSG support staff.

After the game, stand-in captain Krunal Pandya reflected on LSG captain's injury and said at the post-match presentation, "It is such a sad thing he pulled his hip-flexor. I don't know how bad it is, the medical team will assess it." While Rahul left the field during RCB's second over but came to bat at No. 11 during his side's unsuccessful chase. Thus, former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody opined on Rahul's batting slot after the LSG-RCB tie, which saw Lucknow lose by 18 runs.

“I can’t really understand. If he was going to go in, he was supposed to go in during the middle of the game and see if he can hopefully hit you know three or four boundaries. Get a quick 12, 20, whatever it might be and hopefully cause no further damage to his injury," Moody said after the match on ESPNcricinfo.

IPL 2023: 'Don't understand why KL Rahul...': Moody opines on injured LSG skipper's batting slot vs RCB

Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq were engaged in a heated exchange during Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)'s win over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow in match 43 of the IPL 2023 edition on Monday (May 01). During LSG's 127-run chase, Kohli and Lucknow pacer Naveen exchanged some words and were seen having an argument during the post-match handshake as well. Afterwards, Kohli and LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir also clashed and were separated by players from both camps.

Kohli and LSG captain KL Rahul were seen having a chat after the match when Naveen crossed by and once again the duo had an animated discussion. Later on, the crowd chanted Kohli's name when the Afghanistan pacer went to receive an award during the presentation ceremony. Kohli was at his aggressive best during his side's defence of 127 and RCB skipper Faf du Plessis opined on Kohli's aggression post the LSG encounter.

"Aggression is the best version of Virat, isn't it? To see him pumped up like that, that's when he is at his very best. So it is really awesome to be a part of it and my job is to keep things calm on the field, which I thought that I did really well," Faf chuckled during the interview shared on RCB's official Twitter handle.

Du Plessis added, "The plan was to take the seamers on because we felt that hitting spin would be really difficult. It was a tough wicket, so we had to adapt and that was the most important thing. MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to defend a 201-run target versus Shikhar Dhawan's Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 41, in Chennai, of the IPL 2023 edition on Sunday (April 30). Opting to bat first, CSK rode on Devon Conway's 92, Ruturaj Gaikwad's 37, Shivam Dube's 28, and Dhoni's 4-ball 13* to post 200/4. In reply, Punjab chased down the total with contributions from the top six and Sikandar Raza's unbeaten cameo (7-ball 13*).

CSK paid the price for not bowling well in the powerplays and while they bounced back in the middle overs, their pacers -- especially Tushar Deshpande -- went for plenty in the death overs as they couldn't defend 201. This became the first time that a visiting side prevailed on top in a 200-plus chase at the Chepauk in the IPL. While the end result didn't favour Dhoni's troops, the Yellow Army captain achieved a massive feat during his 4-ball 13*.

Courtesy of his cameo, filled with two sixes, Dhoni completed 1,000 runs in just the 20th over of a T20 inning. Thus, he became only the second player to achieve the historic feat after Mumbai Indians' (MI) Kieron Pollard. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans' (GT) David Miller is a distant third in the list of batters with most runs in the 20th over of a T20 inning.

Dhoni also holds the record for most runs in the 20th over of an IPL innings. The 41-year-old has 709 runs in the 20th over whereas MI's former all-rounder Pollard comes next, with 405 runs.

IPL 2023: Another day, another milestone! MS Dhoni joins MI legend in elite list during CSK-PBKS tie

MI vs RR, 1000th IPL game: Listing milestone matches in cash-rich league

April 24, 2023 was a special day for India but it was doubly special for Mumbai Indians. The day not just marked the great Sachin Tendulkar turning 50, it also marked the 10-year anniversary of Rohit Sharma captaining Mumbai Indians for the first time ever.

As the Mumbai Indians return to the Wankhede Stadium to take on Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, the team and coaching staff spoke about captain Hitman Rohit Sharma’s decade at the helm.

Kieron Pollard, the team’s batting coach and one of the players in the MI setup, when Rohit took over captaincy in the middle of the season in 2013, said, “He’s grown as a leader. I mean he’s grown into leadership. Obviously, it was entrusted onto him in 2013 in the middle of a season. He was still pretty young at that point in time.”

Pollard said that in spite of being young when he first took charge, Rohit was a quick learner and always showed leadership potential. “That shows you that a person has a great acumen of what he can accomplish and we are lucky to have him as a leader. He has a wealth of experience, so it’s a matter of tapping into that and continuing to see him grow.”

Terming Rohit’s career so far as “incredible”, bowling coach Shane Bond emphasised the impact that Rohit has had as a personality. “He’s such a big personality around our group, on and off the field and particularly in leading this team to where we are now, he has done a brilliant job.”

Suryakumar Yadav, said that Rohit’s numbers as captain speak for themselves and his journey with MI has been an incredible story. “Here we are in his 10th year as captain. So obviously 10 years as captain, that too for a franchise like Mumbai Indians. I think it is a very, very big achievement. It’s a story in itself. He’s brought so much glory for the franchise, winning five trophies under his captaincy.”

Ishan Kishan highlighted Rohit’s contribution to the team as captain, “Winning the Championship five times as a Captain is a great achievement. I know how he is as a captain, he’s done so much for the team.”

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green credited Rohit as a key factor in the team’s legacy, saying, “The success that Mumbai have had, a lot of that is to do with him.”

Rohit’s way of dealing with youngsters and the way he conducts himself in a team environment make him a great leader, feels fielding coach James Pamment. “A great strength of his is that he encourages the young Indian players very well. Captains just know how to pull the strings and that’s one of the things Rohit has done extremely well from being a very young captain when he first won the championship to maturing in the job. In a big competition like this, he’s got a nice manner about him,” Pamment said.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were at their fluent best on Friday, April 28 after they beat hosts Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 56 runs in match 38 of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The LSG batters were at the top of their game after they recorded the highest total of the season, which also turned out to be the second-highest in the tournament’s history. LSG put on 257/5 in their 20 overs before PBKS were bowled out for 201 and lost the contest by 56 runs at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

PBKS never in contest

Chasing 258, was always a tall order for Punjab Kings (PBKS) despite having returning skipper Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone in the team. It was not a good start for them as the skipper was dismissed in the first over which made the task vulnerable. Atharva Taide then took the initiative into his own hands as he turned the screws with a well-made 66 off 36. His innings consisted of 8 fours and 2 sixes but could take the hosts any closer to the win.

Although there were useful contributions by the middle-order batters, PBKS could only reach the 201-run mark. The likes of Sikandar Raza (36), Liam Livingstone 23), Sam Curran (21) and Jitesh Sharma all got starts but could help their side to the win.

Yash Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for LSG as he ended with four wickets while Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets. Ravi Bishnoi and two and Marcus Stoinis were also amongst the wickets that saw PBKS get bowled out and therefore handed LSG a 56-run win.

LSG demolish PBKS bowling

Put into bat first, LSG were at their fluent best as openers Kyle Mayers and KL Rahul (12) took the attack on PBKS as they put together an opening partnership of 41. Mayers scored the third-highest fifty in the IPL 2023 after it took only 20 balls for him which also saw him score 4 sixes and 7 fours. Mayers was hitting the ball all over the park as he took on Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada and Gurnoor Brar.

After Mayers was dismissed in the sixth over, it was Ayush Badoni (43 off 24) and Stoinis who took charge of the innings. They both put together an 89-run stand for the third wicket where Badoni scored 3 sixes and 3 fours. Stoinis also scored 5 sixes and 6 fours in his marathon innings that took LSG over 200.

This was also the second time in the history of IPL that a team has scored 250 plus with Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) total of 263 still the highest in the competition’s history.

Lucknow Super Giants will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at home in Lucknow as they keep pace with other teams to make the playoffs as league leaders. The contest will take place on Monday, 1 May while they will also face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the same venue on Wednesday. On the flip side, Punjab will look to return back to winning ways when they take on Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 30.

IPL 2023: LSG down PBKS by 56 runs on home turf after milestone performance with bat

Gujarat Titans (GT) are going strong in the IPL 2023 edition. After the end of half of their league games, the defending champions have five wins from seven games and occupy the second spot in the points table following their 55-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at home on Tuesday (April 25). So far, the likes of Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Sai Sudharsan, Md Shami, Rashid Khan, etc. have done well with some contributions from others as well.

Yash Dayal, one of their top performers in IPL 2022 campaign where he ended with 11 scalps in nine games, has been out of the playing XI ever since Rinku Singh slammed him for five successive sixes in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)'s stunning win over Gujarat early this season. Requiring 29 off the last six balls in pursuit of 205, Rinku smashed five straight sixes off Yash to dent the pacer's confidence. Since then, he has lost his place in the playing XI and captain Hardik revealed that he is not doing well, with his return unlikely in the remainder of the season.

“I can’t confirm that (on his chances of Yash Dayal playing again this season)," Hardik said when enquired about Dayal, after GT-MI tie, on Star Sports. "He fell ill and lost 7-8 kilos after that match. There was a spread of viral infection during that period and also due to the pressure he had faced, his condition is presently not good enough to take the field. Someone’s loss is someone’s gain at the end of the day. It is going to take a long time before we see him on the field,” Hardik added.

Yash ended with match figures of 4-0-69-0 during GT's loss versus KKR. He will hope to recover from illness at the earliest and stage a comeback in the business end of the ongoing tournament. At present, Gujarat have quite a lot of boxes ticked and look set to enter the playoffs. Nonetheless, they will need to retain the winning momentum in the second half of the league.

Yash lost 7-8 kilos after Rinku's onslaught, reveals Hardik Pandya; GT pacer's return unlikely in IPL 2023

In what comes as a new or rather a shocking news, a few of the IPL teams have reached out to several overseas cricketers- six unnamed English players to be precise, to quit international cricket and instead join them and play in their teams in franchise-based T20 leagues across the world. As reported by Times first, informal conversations between undisclosed entities over the same have been going on in England, Australia, and New Zealand and even in South Africa.

The reports suggest that given the IPL owners now hold stakes in other T20-based league across world in UAE, South Africa and the USA, to name the latest ones; they are seeking players who could remain available to feature in those tournaments, even if this means quitting international cricket.

According to Heath Mills, executive chairman of FICA, the global players' body, such a report shouldn’t surprise anyone as players would like to opt for this option in years to come.

"There have been informal conversations between some franchises and players about being available to play in multiple tournaments. That can take a different shape and form for different players. But it should come as no surprise to anyone in cricket that these conversations are happening and that players will have these sorts of options in the future,” Mills said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Elaborating further on this, Mills, who without naming anyone or any team, added such talks are already underway.

"Without going into the specifics of individual conversations, they are about a player being available to play for a franchise in different T20 leagues. A franchise might have three or four teams globally, so they might want the player in multiple competitions - as opposed to just the IPL. It's not necessarily about signing a player up for all competitions exclusively but rather additional ones to their IPL team," Mills added.

However, with the Indian players being the biggest draw and knowing they are unlikely to get the NOC from the BCCI to appear in any other league other than the IPL, the owners had no choice but to reach out to foreign players. It comes on a back of a few instances in the past where a major player in a team decided not to sign a central contract just to remain available for these T20 leagues – the biggest example of which is of New Zealand’s Trent Boult, who decided against signing the central contact with the BlackCaps.

On the contrary, the ECB’s managing director, Robert Key, while speaking on BBC’s Test Match Special Podcast earlier this week, said for England players, Test cricket is still the priority, and for them to fall into this bracket, it would take a few years and will not be easy.

"Test cricket is still the hold for English players, I don't see any time in the near future certainly where one of the Test players, certainly the centrally contracted players, is going to say 'by the way I'm going off to America for three weeks," Key said. "I just don't think that's going to happen. That is not a threat at the moment. Obviously it is different for white-ball cricketers," Rob Key said.

Is IPL asking foreign players to quit international cricket and play franchise-based T20 leagues?

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are at the top of the points table at the halfway mark of the IPL 2023 edition. The Yellow Army, who finished at the ninth position in IPL 2022, have found their rhythm and have won five out of their seven games. Hence, Harbhajan Singh -- former Indian and CSK off-spinner -- lavished huge praise on Dhoni's leadership and decoded the reason behind his staggering success as captain.

Under Dhoni, CSK have won the IPL championship on four occasions (in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021), ended as the runners-up in five seasons (2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2019) and have reached the playoffs for a record 11 times. Thus, Bhajji lauded Dhoni as captain and revealed that he backs players to the hilt, which is a reasno for the franchise's success and envious record.

The players need to have that belief and faith in the management and captain. Only then they perform and MS and CSK team management understands it."

Dhoni's CSK have had injury concerns with the likes of Ben Stokes, Deepak Chahar, Sisanda Magala, etc. being on the bench. However, Dhoni-led team management have backed their available resources and got performances from the likes of inexperienced Akash Singh, inconsistent campaigners such as Tushar Deshpande and Shivam Dube and veterans Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja (who had a dismal run in 2022) and Moeen Ali.

Even Dhoni has struck at 196.77, scoring 61 runs off 31 balls faced so far. CSK will take on RR on Thursday evening and aim to strengthen their position at the top with another win.

IPL 2023: 'The winning mantra of MS Dhoni is....' - Harbhajan Singh decodes CSK captain's success

Match 36 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat the hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Wednesday (April 26). Being asked to bat first, KKR rode on Jason Roy's 56, quickfire knock from captain Nitish Rana and cameos from Rinku Singh and David Weise to post 200 for 5.

In reply, RCB only managed 179 for 8 in 20 overs to lose by 21 runs. With this loss, RCB's two-match winning streak came to an end. They had a chance to reach 10 points along with table-toppers Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) but missed a great opportunity. For KKR, they ended their four-match losing streak and finally earned their third win this year.

Earlier, Roy slammed an impressive 29-ball 56 as he took on the RCB attack in the powerplay overs. While his opening partner N Jagadeesan struggled, making a 27-ball 29, the England opener's knock featured with 4 fours and 5 sixes at 193.10.

Nitish's 21-ball 48 along with timely hits from Rinku (10-ball 18*) and Weise's 3-ball 12* ensured KKR did fall behind as they posted 200-5.

RCB's run-chase started with in-form openers Faf du Plessis and Kohli attacking from the word go. In-form spinner Suyash Sharma was brought into the attack in the third over and he instantly removed Faf. The regular captain continued to play as an impact player, with Kohli leading the side, but fell for 17 (7).

Kohli looked in sublime touch. He found the boundaries and the gaps amid the regular fall of wickets. He eventually fell for a 37-ball 54 as KKR came on top. Mahipal Lamror (34) and Dinesh Karthik (22) got starts but the writing was on the wall once Kohli departed.

From KKR, Suyash (2 for 30), Varun Chakaravarthy (3 for 27), and Andre Russell (2 for 29) contributed with regular breakthroughs to dent RCB's chase and halt their mini-winning run.

RCB remain in the fifth spot with eight points. KKR move to the seventh position, replacing Mumbai Indians (MI), after this win.

IPL 2023: All-round KKR end four-match losing streak with 21-run win over Virat Kohli's RCB

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are improving with each passing game in the IPL 2023 edition. At the halfway mark of the league stage, RCB are placed in the fifth position with four wins from seven encounters. Ahead of their home game versus the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh shared some advice for Virat Kohli.

Kohli has had a good run in IPL 2023, with 279 runs in seven matches including four half-centuries. While he has been impressive in the powerplays, he tends to slow down in the middle overs with the spinners operating in tandem. Ahead of the RCB-KKR face-off, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday (April 26), Bhajji feels the onus is on Kohli, who has been the stand-in captain in the past two encounters with Faf du Plessis playing only as an impact player, to deliver the goods for Bengaluru.

"Virat Kohli will have to take the responsibility to keep RCB up. His partnership with Faf will be crucial. Virat and Faf are in good form and this will always give relief to RCB," Harbhajan told Star Sports.

Kohli has struck at 141.62 in IPL 2023. He has struck at 171 versus pacers, averaging 75, but struggled against spin -- striking at 103 with an average of 22.25 along with four dismissals. Thus, it has been one of the reasons for RCB slowing down in the end overs -- managing only 37 in the last four overs versus Punjab Kings (PBKS) and 27 during the same period versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their previous tie.

Will Kohli go bonkers and also progress ahead at a healthy strike rate versus KKR this evening? Only time will tell...

IPL 2023: 'He will have to...' - Harbhajan Singh shares advice for Virat Kohli before RCB vs KKR clash

After playing half their games in the league stage of IPL 2023, Rajasthan Royals (RR) occupy the third spot with four wins from seven outings. It isn't a bad start by any means for the one-time winners. Under Sanju Samson, who became their captain since IPL 2021, the Royals have become a formidable force and are eyeing to play their second final on the trot, with a hope to get past the finish line this time around.

In the inaugural edition, in 2008, the Royals ended as the eventual champions when no one gave them a chance. The franchise roped in superstar Shane Warne, serving as the captain-cum-coach, who inspired an inexperienced squad to win the championship. The late Aussie leg-spinner had some international stars, such as Graeme Smith, Mohammed Kaif, etc., but a plethora of unknown names rose to the occasion in his influence.

After Warne-led RR's initial success, there was a period of lull for the Jaipur-based franchise till IPL 2012. In the 2013 edition, the 2008 winners made it to the playoffs, finished third, and even played the final of that year's Champions League (CLT20), a now-defunct tournament. Back then, RR was led by Rahul Dravid, an equally inspiring figure like Warne.

Post Dravid and Warne, the team was led by able readers of the game, such as Shane Watson, Steve Smith, and Ajinkya Rahane, as they enjoyed sporadic success but never came close to winning the title. From the Dravid-era till IPL 2020, Samson remained a part of the Royals' dugout -- barring 2015 and 2016 when the franchise was serving a spot-fixing ban -- and was silently groomed by several eminent leaders in the camp.

While Samson's batting credentials made heads turn in his debut IPL season in 2013, not much was known about his leadership skills. After a dismal IPL 2020, RR team management appointed Samson as their new captain before the 2021 edition. While his team ended seventh that year, Samson didn't look like a fish out of the water. He improved in IPL 2022 and by now, RR certainly looks like a unit controlled by Samson.

Ingredients of a fabulous leader

Recently, Ravi Shastri -- former India head coach -- said on ESPNCricinfo, "You say you stamp your personality as a leader. You see that with Hardik, he calls the shots, and takes the decisions. You see that with Dhoni. He takes the decisions, there is no two ways about it, he might be right or wrong. Sanju has improved a lot. You can see that quiet confidence in his own ability and he understands his game a lot better."

Leading superstars such as Jos Buttler, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult, etc., can be intimidating. However, Samson has always looked his part and been assertive as captain. He remains calm behind the stumps, uses his bowlers judiciously, and does not shy away from changing plans when required. In addition, he does not overcommunicate; passing too many unnecessary suggestions from behind the stumps.

During RR's clash vs Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in Chennai, Sandeep Sharma was taken to the cleaners by MS Dhoni in the last over. With seven required off three balls, Samson raced from his wicketkeeping spot to just ask Sandeep about his plans.

"After I was hit for two sixes in the last over, Sanju and I discussed the plans on how to bowl the next 3 balls. Sanju is very calm as captain. He did not give any suggestions to me. He simply asked me about my plans for the next ball. I told him about my instincts and he backed me to bowl that. This quality is very rare in a captain in such a pressure situation," said the RR pacer.

Thus, Samson backed his experienced bowler and did not give suggestions. Rather, he just looked for ideas from his bowler and backed him to the hilt.

You will win some, you will lose some but remain unfazed

After RR's loss versus RCB, their second loss on the trot, Samson said in the dressing room, "I think it's very normal in this tournament when you have these couple of losses or you have those couple of wins, you go up and down. But the pattern and the style of our team, the style of our franchise is to stay humble when we're going high, and when we're going low, we believe in ourselves, as simple as that."

He added, "We believe in each and every one of us, believe in yourself and there is no pointing fingers, that's the rule we need to follow. In my experience, from what I've understood, the reason you end up on the losing or the winning side only is because how hungry are you there to win. How badly do you want it? Is it only because of you, is it only because you want to do it or do you want to do it for the team."

Not bogged down by responsibility

Many captains get bogged down by extra responsibility or get too cautious in their primary role. However, this has not been the case with Samson. Ever since he took over as RR skipper, he has amassed over 400 runs every season. In 2021, he made 484 runs, including a ton, at 136.72. His strike rate did dip as compared to the previous edition (where he struck at 158.89) but it was still acceptable. It shot up considerably in 2022, where he scored 458 runs at 146.79. After seven games this year, he is striking at over 150 (158.77).

One does not know what fate has in store for RR in IPL 2023. Irrespective of the outcome, the Royals should be lauded for identifying a rare talent like Samson, grooming him amid several leaders, retaining him, and making him the leader in his late 20s; when a cricketer has matured with enough experience and past mistakes. The right-hander has shown glimpses of his captaincy skills and will only grow leaps and bounds if given a longer rope, which seems likely at this point.

In his book 'Coaching Beyond - My Days with the Indian Cricket Team', R Sridhar -- former India fielding coach -- revealed it was Samson (who was on the bench) who suggested Chahal feature in India's XI as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja in a T20I versus Australia in Canberra, in late 2020. Chahal ended as the Player-of-the-Match (3 for 25) in India's win.

Thus, Samson always had a knack for reading the game and being tactical. Now, he is only growing with each passing day and is destined for a bright run as captain. Is India captaincy in the reckoning? Well, only time will tell. For now, he certainly looks like a long-serving captain in the IPL.

After playing half their games in the league stage of IPL 2023, Rajasthan Royals (RR) occupy the third spot with four wins from seven outings. It isn't a bad start by any means for the one-time winners.

Also Read: IPL 2023: 'As soon as he...': Brett Lee's advice to MI's Arjun Tendulkar to bowl at 140kmph While Samson's batting credentials made heads turn in his debut IPL season in 2013, not much was known about his leadership skills. After a dismal IPL 2020, RR team management appointed Samson as their new captain before the 2021 edition. While his team ended seventh that year, Samson didn't look like a fish out of the water. He improved in IPL 2022 and by now, RR certainly looks like a unit controlled by Samson. Ingredients of a fabulous leader Recently, Ravi Shastri -- former India head coach -- said on ESPNCricinfo, "You say you stamp your personality as a leader. You see that with Hardik, he calls the shots, and takes the decisions. You see that with Dhoni. He takes the decisions, there is no two ways about it, he might be right or wrong. Sanju has improved a lot. You can see that quiet confidence in his own ability and he understands his game a lot better." Leading superstars such as Jos Buttler, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult, etc., can be intimidating. You will win some, you will lose some but remain unfazed After RR's loss versus RCB, their second loss on the trot, Samson said in the dressing room, "I think it's very normal in this tournament when you have these couple of losses or you have those couple of wins, you go up and down. Explained | IPL 2023: Why Sanju Samson is a great captain in making

Shubman Gill was hit with the commentator’s curse on Saturday, April 22 after he was dismissed for a duck in the Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Playing for Gujarat Titans (GT), Gill who has been in sensational form in 2023 was dismissed for a duck, which was predicted by former India Test opener Akash Chopra.

"In batting, Wriddhiman Saha gives starts but doesn't make a big score. There will be pressure on Shubman Gill because this pitch will not be that flat. [B] Sai Sudharsan has been very, very good but a run-a-ball. David Miller is brilliant and is more effective in a run chase,” Akash had predicted early.

Deciding to bat first, Gujarat Titans (GT) openers Gill and Wriddhiman Saha walked out to bat and looked to continue their impressive run. Before the match started, Gill scored 228 runs in the five IPL matches with a best of 67 and has scored two fifties. But like Akash predicted the pitch was not flat and won’t be helpful for the India batter to stamp his authority.

On the second ball of the second over, Gill did not judge Krunal Pandya’s delivery and ended up handing a simple catch to Ravi Bishnoi. The dismissal paved way for LSG to strike an early blow and establish an early advantage in the contest.

Akash also spoke fondly about the GT bowling and thinks they have all the tools in the arsenal to succeed in the contest.

"Gujarat have a very good bowling attack. They have Mohammad Shami, Alzarri Joseph, Mohit Sharma and Joshua Little. Then they have got Rashid Khan and Hardik Pandya is bowling his full quota of overs."

IPL 2023: Shubman Gill hit with commentators curse, dismissed for duck after Akash Chopra's prediction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have continued their excellent start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Ravindra Jadeja and Devon Conway helped them register their fourth win of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). In a one-sided contest at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, CSK got the better of SRH by seven wickets with eight balls to spare while they chased a below-par 135-run target. The win sees CSK rise to eight points and are third in the standings.

Asked to chase 135, CSK openers Devon Conway (unbeaten 77) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (35) started to dominate from the start and put together an opening stand of 87 runs. The duo was in excellent touch as Conway hammered 12 fours and a six while Gaikwad was scoring at a slow rate. The 2021 Orange Cap winner, Gaikwad was unfortunate to have been run out at the non-striker's end when the ball came off the bowler and he was caught off guard.

Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayadu then followed soon as they were dismissed for nine runs while Moeen Ali (unbeaten 6) helped CSK home. The fifty from Conway was his third consecutive in the IPL and has been a good addition to the side. Mayank Markande scalped two wickets for 23 runs from his four overs and was the pick of the bowlers.

The right-handed batter Rahul Tripathi then came out to bat. Tripathi and Abhishek handled SRH's charge as they kept piling runs for their team, slamming boundaries regularly. However, their partnership was broken by Ravindra Jadeja who dismissed well-set batter Abhishek for 34 in the 10th over of the game.

CSK will next take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday at the Eden Gardens as they look to get into double figures for points. On the flip side, SRH will take on Delhi Capitals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

IPL 2023: Conway, Jadeja lead CSK to empathic seven-wicket win in one-sided contest

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will stage the Indian Premier League (IPL) final on Sunday, May 28 after the dates for the playoffs were revealed on Friday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Alongside Ahmedabad, Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium will host the Eliminator and the Qualifier -1 before the action heads to Gujarat. Ahmedabad will also host Qualifier 2 with a month to go before the start of the playoffs. This will be the second time in back-to-back years, Ahmedabad will stage the final with all teams still in the mix for the playoffs.

In a statement released by the BCCI, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will once again be the host of the IPL final (May 28) and will also stage Qualifier 2 (May 26). The iconic venue was also the host of the opening match of the IPL 2023 when hosts Gujarat Titans beat Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling contest.

Last Gujarat Titans beat Rajasthan Royals in the final of the IPL as they were crowned the champions for the first time in asking.

Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium will also be on the playoff calendars as it will stage Qualifier 1 on May 23 while the Eliminator clash will also take place at the venue on May 24. Last year, Kolkata’s Eden Gardens hosted the Qualifier 1 and Eliminator clash with Mumbai and Pune hosting the league phase of the IPL.

IPL 2023: Chennai to host Qualifier 1 and Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and final in Ahmedabad

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh lauded MS Dhoni. Dhoni remains a huge name in world cricket. He ended his glorious run at the international level on August 15, 2020. In his international career, he ended with 17,266 runs, 108 half-centuries, 16 tons, 634 catches, 359 sixes and 195 stumpings along with leading India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Dhoni has represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) -- his current franchise as well -- and now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). Dhoni has led CSK to the title on four occasions and also guided them to two Champions League (CLT20) trophies. In addition, Chennai have ended as runners-up on five instances and reached the playoffs in 11 out of their 13 appearances; all under MSD.

Dhoni has over 5,000 runs in the IPL and recently became the first-ever player to captain an IPL team (CSK) in 200 matches. Thus, he enjoys a humongous fan-following in world cricket, especially in India. As IPL 2023 could be his last season, many of his loyalists have gathered in large numbers in CSK's games so far.

Recently, Harbhajan -- former India and CSK spinner -- praised Dhoni and said on Star Sports, "Mahendra Singh Dhoni is only one. There cannot be a bigger cricketer than him in India. Someone could have scored more runs than him and someone could have taken more wickets than him, but no one has a bigger fanbase than him," Harbhajan said on Star Sports.

"Dhoni has accepted this fandom to heart and he respects his teammates as well. He walks with so much love and emotion that anyone else would go mad, but Dhoni has carried this love and emotion in his heart for 15 years and he still hasn't changed at all."

Dhoni-led CSK occupy the third spot in the points table after their first five games. On Friday evening (April 21), they will host the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in match 29 of this year's edition. CSK enjoy a 3-0 lead over SRH at the Chepauk.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) returned to winning ways as they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 24 runs in match 27 of the IPL 2023 edition on Thursday (April 20), in Mohali. Virat Kohli captained the franchise after a long time as regular captain Faf du Plessis only featured as an Impact Player, due to his hip injury.

Being asked to bat first, Kohli-Faf stitched an impressive 137-run opening stand as the duo continued their rich forms. Towards the end, RCB only managed 37 runs in the last four overs as they posted 174 for 4. In reply, Shikhar Dhawan-less Punjab only managed 150 all-out in 18.2 overs to lose by 24 runs. Kohli slammed a 47-ball 59 whereas Faf top-scored with a solid 56-ball 84 before Mohammed Siraj returned with 4-0-21-4.

Seeing RCB's batting, where they struggled for a late flourish, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar said, as quoted by India Today, "The start promised so much, but the score wasn’t what we expected. But the fact is that it’s an afternoon game. The pitch will become slower. That gives RCB hope. But, yes, they could have added maybe 25 runs more, considering the start that they had."

On Kohli slowing down after a fine start, Manjrekar opined, "It’s the same scenario with Virat Kohli that we have been seeing for a while. When the bowlers take the pace off, he struggles to get a move on. We saw that in the last IPL too. Once he gets into his 40s, he tends to slow down a little bit, I don’t know what the reason for that is."

"But, Faf du Plessis, how unselfish he was! He had an opportunity to get a hundred as well. But he was looking to hit a six every ball. He could have also maybe hang around and get a hundred. But he was looking to belt every ball for a six as he had a target in mind. That's the kind of batting that you really want to see," the ex-cricketer added.

Kohli-Faf added 59 runs in the powerplays but the former slowed down once the field restrictions were lifted. He failed to accelerate freely in the middle overs, which has been an issue for him for quite some time. Kohli slammed 43 off 26 deliveries against pacers, smashing a six and three fours but faced as many as nine dot balls to only manage 16 off 21 balls against the Punjab spinners.

RCB will hope for Kohli to sort out his middle-overs issue and dominate pace and spin equally as the tournament progresses ahead.

Match 28 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition will see the winless Delhi Capitals (DC) host the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Zealand on Thursday evening (April 20). The David Warner-led Delhi franchise have looked a pale shadow of themselves after five straight defeats and, hence, will be eager to get off the mark as the competition has already got intense between all other nine teams. Thus, DC will not like to be left behind and will aim to open their account versus KKR.

Talking about KKR, the Nitish Rana-led franchise have had a topsy-turvy ride. After five games, they have won two and lost three and, thus, need to pull up their socks. For them to become more consistent, they need the likes of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell -- two of their most experienced players -- to come good and deliver more often than not. They also need to fix their opening combination as the league stage is now nearing its halfway mark.

Match preview and result prediction of DC vs KKR: Match 28 is expected to go down to the wire as it will feature two sides who have not looked at their very best so far. Expect another 170-180-plus affair with chasing team to start as favourites. In head-to-head, DC have won 14 whereas KKR have emerged victorious on 16 occasions in 31 face-offs overall. Expect the tide to turn in DC's favour this evening.

Match 27 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat hosts Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 24 runs at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Thursday (April 20). While the match went down to the wire, RCB dominated the majority of the proceedings to emerge on top. With this triumph, RCB now occupy the fifth spot in the points table.

Being asked to bat first, Virat Kohli-led RCB came out all guns blazing. Kohli was the stand-in skipper as Faf du Plessis, the regular captain, played as an Impact Player due to his hip injury. The pair stitched a 137-run opening stand with Kohli slamming a 47-ball 59 whereas Faf continued his rich form and returned with an impressive 54-ball 86.

RCB managed only 37 runs in the last four overs as Punjab bowlers staged a comeback, with Harpreet Brar taking two successive wickets. The visitors, however, ended with a competitive score of 174-4.

In reply, PBKS were on the back foot from the word go. They lost Atharva Taide, Matthew Short and Liam Livingstone for cheap as Md Siraj struck twice. With regular skipper Shikhar Dhawan out of the playing XI due to injury concerns, Punjab once again failed to get going at the top.

Prabhsimran Singh (46) looked good and took on the RCB bowlers amid the regular fall of wickets. He lost captain Curran, with a superb throw from Hasaranga, and the chase was pretty much done and dusted there itself. Despite the regular fall of wickets, Punjab kept scoring at a good rate and got a partnership going between Jitesh Sharma, who hit some big shots, and Brar to stay alive.

Nonetheless, Siraj broke the partnership in his last over, bowling the 18th, to take RCB closer to the finish line (ending with 4-0-21-4). Eventually, Harshal Patel dismissed Jitesh (41) as PBKS managed 150 all-out in 18.2 overs to lose by 24 runs.

KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by ten runs in match 26 of IPL 2023 on Wednesday (April 19). Put into bat, LSG were slow in their approach, on a tricky two-paced wicket, to post 154 for 7 but restricted the home side for 144 for 6 to emerge on top at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur. While Rahul rotated his bowlers nicely and was praised for his captaincy, by former cricketers Shaun Pollock and Murali Karthik, he was slammed for his rusty 32-ball 39.

Opening the innings, Rahul and Kyle Mayers took some time to get going. While Mayers managed a 42-ball 51, Rahul was also unimpressive as he returned with 39 (32). Thus, former India pacer RP Singh opined on Rahul's sluggish knock and said 'he never used to play like this'.

Singh said on JioCinema, "KL Rahul never used to play like this, he used to always have a good strike rate, take the attack to the opposition and play good shots, but here he seemed to be stuck and under pressure."

He added, "I might be wrong, but he is probably thinking that his form might return after playing a big innings. His form is not bad, he is still playing his shots, but he is not being able to find those gaps in his shots, he should take those calculative risks which he is not taking."

At the post-match presentation, Rahul said, "We game in here yesterday and saw 180 would be a par score, but the first over from Boult, me and Kyle had a chat and realised this isn't a 180 wicket. The ball was keeping a bit low, so we gave ourselves time in the powerplay. Maybe if we played a bit better, we might have got 170 as well." However, he was also slammed by former India head coach Ravi Shastri for his defensive approach.

"Absolutely (needs to get the strike up). All that talk about 160, I don't buy it. When you have two chances, if you convert that 39 to 60 or 70, 160 becomes 175. You need someone in the top 3 to carry on and play that long innings," Shastri told Star Sports.

LSG are in the second spot in the points table, with eight points from six games, and will host defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Saturday afternoon (April 22).

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) won their third game in a row when they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 14 runs in match 25 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (April 18). Asked to bat first, MI rode on Cameron Green's 40-ball 64 and Tilak Verma's 37 to post a challenging 192 for 5. In reply, SRH were bundled out for 178 in 19.5 overs with Green, Cameron Bancroft and Riley Meredith taking two wickets each. Arjun Tendulkar also ended with a scalp, picking the last wicket, to take his maiden IPL scalp.

SRH needed 20 off the last six deliveries when captain Rohit threw the ball to Arjun. The inexperienced campaigner executed the yorkers and bowled well to take his side to a close win as former cricketers and experts of the game shared their opinions on Sachin Tendulkar's son. Joining the bandwagon, former Pakistan captain and keeper-batter Rashid Latif claimed that Arjun is still a work-in-progress and made a big statement.

Latif said on his Youtube channel, "He's (Arjun) in his initial stage. He has to do a lot of hard work. His alignment isn't good, he won't be able to generate pace."

He further opined, "If a good biomechanical consultant guides him, maybe he can add some pace to his bowling. It's quite a touchy subject, coaching and changing a player. Sachin could've done that himself but he relied on domestic cricket for that." Latif added, "Your base has to be strong. When he lands, he goes out instead of coming in. MI occupy the sixth position in the points table after five encounters, winning three and losing two. They will host Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Saturday evening (April 22) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

IPL 2023: Arjun Tendulkar's alignment isn't good, won't be able to generate pace, claims former Pak captain

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) won their third game in a row when they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 14 runs, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, in match 25 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday (April 18). Asked to bat first, MI rode on Cameron Green's 64 and Tilak Verma's 37 to post 192-5. In return, SRH got bundled out for 178 in 19.5 overs to lose by 14 runs.

There were several big moments in the high-scoring game. However, Arjun Tendulkar ended the match on a high by picking his maiden IPL wicket. Bowling the last over, with 20 to defend, Arjun conceded only five runs and removed Bhuvneshwar Kumar -- who was the first bowler to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar for a duck in Ranji Trophy, at the same ground in Hyderabad -- and opened his wicket coloumn in IPL.

Mumbai Indians star Tim David has reflected on Cameron Green’s performance in the stellar win against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday as they registered their third consecutive win in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Green’s unbeaten fifty against SRH propelled MI to their third win while Tim David was involved in five dismissals that resulted in the 14-run win. The win saw Mumbai go on six points as they now look to mount a firm challenge for a playoff spot.

"Some of you might not know this, but Greeny (Cameron Green) and I actually went to the same school back in Australia. He was a few years younger than me, just a cheeky little bugger. He was not as tall as he is now and he just used to smack me everywhere, I had the side-arm throwing at him, I tried to bump him, but I just could not get him out. Very excited and proud of you mate," David said after playing a key role in MI’s win.

With the game reaching a pivotal point, David executed a perfect run out to dismiss Washington Sundar, which proved to be a match-turning moment. David was involved in four catches and a run out while Green scored 64 runs off 40 deliveries to help the side gain momentum in the season.

"I think the run-out actually was my favourite out of all things I did on the field today because I did not expect it to be out. I was disappointed when they went for the second run, but then Surya came running in from the boundary and said that is actually out," the Singapore national added.

IPL 2023: 'Green smacked me everywhere back in the schools'- MI star Tim David reveals after SRH win

The IPL 2023 edition is on a roll, churning out thrilling contests with each passing day. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), two of the most successful franchises in IPL history, are slowly coming to their own after a slow start and have three wins each after five encounters.

Recently, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar -- who is part of the commentary panel of IPL 2023 -- revealed he would have loved to play for MI, his home franchise. If not MI, Gavaskar stated that he would have loved to play for CSK, the four-time champions, for two reasons -- majorly to play under MS Dhoni.

Gavaskar in a Q&A session on Star Sports, Gavaskar was asked which team he would like to represent in the IPL. While his first choice was MI, he named CSK as his second preference due to the Dhoni factor.

"If not Mumbai Indians then I would like to play for Chennai Super Kings. Chennai Super Kings for two reasons, firstly, the Chennai owners are passionate about cricket, they have done so much for the sport. Srinivasan sir has done a lot for cricket. And the second big reason would be to sit in the dressing room with MS Dhoni and see how he captains the team. Is he as calm and composed in the dressing room as he is on the field? Does he lose his cool when someone has dropped a catch or somebody didn’t back up a fielder? That’s what I would like to know," Gavaskar said.

On being asked who he would like to see play in the cash-rich league from his era, Gavaskar mentione, "Look, a batsman I would like to see would be Sandeep Patil, there is only one all-rounder who I would choose – Kapil Dev, for the bowler, I would like to see BS Chandrashekhar play in the T20 format, because his bowling action was not suited only for test cricket, but one day cricket and T20 cricket would also be easy for him."

At present, CSK occupy the third position whereas Rohit Sharma's MI are in the sixth spot.

Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) hosted last year's runners-up Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 23 of IPL 2023 at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday (April 16). Asked to bat first, defending champions GT rode on contributions from Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya, David Miller and Abhinav Manohar to post a competitive 177 for 7.

In reply, Sanju Samson's RR were in a spot of bother and reduced to 55 for 4 before the captain's counterattacking 32-ball 60 and Shimron Hetymer's 26-ball 56*, along with timely hits from Dhruv Jurel and R Ashwin, took their side to a thrilling three-wicket win in the final over. During the end overs, GT's head coach Ashish Nehra was seen constantly talking to David Miller, stationed at the deep. Despite Nehra's valiant efforts, his suggestions didn't work as GT bowlers lost the plot in the end to lose the clash.

After the game, Nehra's former India teammate Virender Sehwag opined on the former's on-field tactics and said on Cricbuzz, "We know Ashish Nehra from childhood and so I feel he was just dealing with his anxiety by talking to the fielders on the boundary. But what that might do is sometimes it might put pressure on the players. He said something to Shami too when he was on the boundary, and then even Shami ended up getting hit for runs in his last over."
