"In high-scoring encounters, there are always decisive moments that shape the outcome, and Shubman's exceptional acceleration from the 12th over onwards propelled @gujarat_titans to a monumental total. Likewise, Mumbai briefly got back into the game with @TilakV9’s blistering 24 runs against @MdShami11 and were alive till @surya_14kumar got out."

"Gujarat are a formidable side and the wickets of @ShubmanGill, @hardikpandya7 & @DavidMillerSA12 will be key for Chennai tonight. @ChennaiIPL also bat deep with @msdhoni coming in as low as number 8, hence it could be a case of one team out-batting the other.

Sachin Tendulkar terms as 'unforgettable' IPL 2023 season of Shubman Gill, who led GT to back-to-back finals

Yashasvi Jaiswal has moved one step closer to his first international cap after he was named as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad as a reserve in the World Test Championship (WTC) squad on Sunday. Jaiswal was in great form in the IPL and scored the most runs by an uncapped Indian in the season while Gaikwad won’t be available until June 5 as he will be getting married. While a place in the Playing XI looks hard to come by, Jaiswal will be optimistic about his debut in the WTC final against Australia.

WTC Final: RR sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal to take Ruturaj Gaikwad's place after impressive IPL 2023 season

MS Dhoni is one of the legends of the game. Despite retiring from international cricket in August 2020, he remains one of the superstars of modern-day cricket and a huge name in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni's craze has been immense in the IPL over the years. In this season, his presence has led to fans flocking in large numbers to witness him play in what is likely his last IPL edition.

In IPL 2023, Dhoni has led from the front and taken the four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to another final in the cash-rich league (Chennai's tenth overall). He has marshalled his troops brilliantly and also come up with small yet impactful knocks down the order. So far, he has 104 runs in 56 balls at a strike rate of 185.71.

Speaking of Dhoni, IPL 2023 final will be his 11th appearance in an IPL summit clash; the most by any player. He has won the IPL on four occasions, all as a captain (for CSK). Ahead of CSK's face-off versus Gujarat Titans (GT), in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening (May 28), here's a look at all the opposition skippers Captain Cool Dhoni faced in nine IPL finals:

After guiding CSK to this season's final, with a 15-run win over GT in Qualifier 1, Dhoni also opened up on his IPL future. As speculations are rife that IPL 2023 will be his last ever, he reacted to all the rumours in the post-match presentation and said, "I have 8-9 months to decide. Why take that headache now? IPL Eliminator: MI book Q2 berth after stunning one-sided win over LSG; to face GT on Friday

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) entered Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023 with a splendid 81-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator on Wednesday (May 24) in Chennai. Opting to bat first, the five-time winners rode on Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera's quickfire knocks to post a challenging 182-8 before dismissing Lucknow for a paltry 101 in 16.3 overs.

With this win, Mumbai have booked a place in Qualifier 2 and will now fight it out with defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) to enter the final, where Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have already qualified. After guiding MI to the top three, Rohit earned praise from Little Master Sunil Gavaskar and claimed that his captaincy is underrated. Gavaskar pointed out that Rohit's captaincy isn't credited enough, unlike CSK skipper MS Dhoni.

'Rohit Sharma is underrated'

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said, "Of course, he is underrated. The man has won five titles for Mumbai Indians. Let me give you an example. (Akash) Madhwal got Ayush Badoni, bowling over the wicket. He then went round the wicket to the left-hander Nicholas Pooran."

"Not a lot of bowlers necessarily do that because if they get their rhythm going bowling over the wicket, they will stick to over the wicket even it's a left-hander, trying to leave the left-hander. But he went around the wicket and produced an absolute gem of a delivery and got the man out."

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reached their tenth IPL final as they went past defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) by 15 runs in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday (May 23).
After the clash, the Chennai fans stayed back in the stadium as they wanted to hear their beloved Thala Dhoni in the post-match presentation. As IPL 2023 is widely speculated to be Dhoni's last season, the Chennai fans were emotional as he might have played his last at the venue, with the final to be held in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 28). Dhoni was asked whether he played his last game in Chennai and if he plans to return for IPL 2024 and the 41-year-old remained tight lipped as he will take a call closer to the upcoming mini auction, later this year.

However, CSK bowling coach and former all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is confident that Dhoni will feature in IPL 2024 and claimed that the Impact Player rule can prolong his career.

CSK at top of their game

IPL Qualifier 1: MS Dhoni's CSK beat GT by 15 runs to reach record 10th final

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) by 15 runs in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 23). After finishing the league stage at the second spot, four-time winners CSK faced defending champions GT in defence of 172-7 as they dismissed Hardik Pandya & Co. for 157 runs in 20 overs. With the win, Chennai entered their tenth IPL final and will now await the winner of Qualifier 2 -- where GT will face the winner of Wednesday's Eliminator -- to lock horns in the summit clash on Sunday evening (May 28) in Ahmedabad.

CSK become the first team to bowl out GT

By defeating GT for the first time, after three straight defeats, CSK achieved a unique feat on Tuesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. MS Dhoni’s men became the first team to bowl out GT, who had played 30 games over the last two seasons. Interestingly, the last wicket also fell on the last ball of the contest with Mohammed Shami being dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana with Deepak Chahar taking a brilliant catch.

Talking about Qualifier 1, GT won the toss and opted to bowl first. Chennai rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 44-ball 60 and cameos from Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja to post a challenging 172 for 7. In reply, GT were all-out for 157 with Shubman Gill (42) and Rashid Khan (30) fighting hard amid regular fall of wickets.

At the post-match presentation, winning captain Dhoni said, "IPL is too big to say it's just another final. Used to be 8 top teams, now it's 10. I won't say it's just another final. It's hard work of 2 months. Everybody has contributed. Yes, middle-order has not got ample opportunity. GT are a fantastic team and they've chased very well, so the thought was to get them in. But it was a good toss to lose."

On his IPL future, Dhoni added, "I don't know - I have 8-9 months to decide. Why take that headache now. I'll always be there for CSK, where it's playing or something outside."

CSK become the first team to bowl out GT By defeating GT for the first time, after three straight defeats, CSK achieved a unique feat on Tuesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Also Read: IPL 2023: MS Dhoni can prolong his career with Impact Player rule, opines CSK bowling coach Dwayne Bravo Talking about Qualifier 1, GT won the toss and opted to bowl first. But it was a good toss to lose." On his IPL future, Dhoni added, "I don't know - I have 8-9 months to decide. Why take that headache now. I'll always be there for CSK, where it's playing or something outside." WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. IPL 2023: MS Dhoni's CSK achieve unique feat after beating defending champions GT in Qualifier 1

Decoding PBKS' run in IPL 2023: Another season where inconsistency haunted Punjab Kings

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was full of praise for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni after a glittering career in Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni, 41, is likely playing in his final season of the IPL is one of the most decorated players and the second-most successful captain in the league history with four titles. While Vaughan is full of praise for him, MS Dhoni is bidding to take CSK into their record 10th IPL final as they play Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Vaughan in awe of Dhoni

"MS Dhoni has run this operation with Stephen Fleming from day dot. One or two of the simple procedures that they go through. They create a strong atmosphere and they are very consistent.

"We don't even talk about the team, because we know that the team is going to be the same as the last one. With that, you create a culture of players knowing that once they get the opportunity in the side, you're pretty much going to stay in the side. The captain and the coach back you. They have a very family atmosphere," said Vaughan.

Dhoni has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in the league history having reached the final on nine occasions with CSK and once with Rising Pune Supergiants. He also won the now-abolished Champions League and he is also reckoned as the best Indian captain having won the ODI and T20I World Cup.

“I don't think there has been a better captain than MS Dhoni ever in T20 cricket across the board. You can argue MS Dhoni's captaincy of spin is best across all formats," said Vaughan.

IPL 2023: Michael Vaughan in awe of MS Dhoni, says 'MS Dhoni is the best ever captain in T20 cricket'

In pics: Reliving Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL 2023 campaign

After a miserable run in IPL 2022, where they finished ninth, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) qualified for the playoffs in IPL 2023. They ended the league stage with 17 points -- eight wins from 14 games -- to finish at the second spot. In Qualifier 1, they will take on the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), who once again dominated the league stage and topped the overall standings with ten victories from 14 matches.

GT and CSK met each other in the opening encounter of IPL 2023 where Gujarat won by five wickets in Ahmedabad. So far, both sides have faced each other thrice with Gujarat emerging on top on each occasion. Thus, Hardik Pandya & Co. will have the edge but the game will be held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Ahead of Qualifier 1, former CSK spinner Harbhajan Singh opined on the game and feels that Chennai will have advantage of playing at home but their performance has not been foolproof this year at the Chepauk.

To back Harbhajan's claims, Dhoni & Co. have lost as many as three home games in IPL 2023 -- versus Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In the recent past, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has admitted that the team is still trying to figure out the conditions and pitches on offer on home soil.

'CSK have home advantage but....'

Bhajji was quoted as saying on Star Sports Live, "The contest between CSK and GT will be intense as both teams know how to win big games. CSK playing at home is a big advantage. They know the conditions well, but somewhere their performance at home hasn't been foolproof this year."

"So this makes things interesting, but CSK looks a completely different side when it plays in the playoffs. I am really looking forward to this match," Harbhajan asserted.

The former Indian spinner, however, added, "Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway come to the ground with full preparation. They have been complimenting each other very well this season. They have given good starts to CSK and scored runs in abundance and entertained the spectators. The team whose openers play well, tend to score well and that is why CSK are in a good position today."

'CSK playing at home is big advantage but...': Harbhajan opines on MS Dhoni & Co.'s Qualifier 1 tie vs GT

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lost to defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) by six wickets in match 70 of IPL 2023 as they failed to make it to the playoffs. The Faf du Plessis-led Bengaluru franchise won and lost seven games each and finished in the sixth position. A win would have taken them to the playoffs, however, they failed to defend 197 for 5, despite Virat Kohli's 61-ball 101*, as Gujarat opener Shubman Gill's unbeaten 104 took his side to a stunning six-wicket win in the last over.

After yet another failed IPL season, RCB's ardent fans were left heartbroken whereas captain Faf reflected on his side's overall campaign and admitted that they didn't deserve to end the league stage in the top-four.

'RCB didn't deserve to be in IPL 2023 playoffs': Faf du Plessis on Bengaluru's elimination

Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) dream of lifting their maiden IPL title ended on Sunday evening (May 21) as the Faf du Plessis-led Bengaluru franchise bowed out of the 2023 edition with a loss in their last league stage game.
While there were a lot of positives for RCB, Dinesh Karthik had a miserable season. 'Wonder whether...' - Former SRH coach opines on RCB star Dinesh Karthik's future after IPL 2023

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had to win their face-off versus defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the last league stage game of IPL 2023 on Sunday evening (May 21) to book the vacant fourth spot in the playoffs. Despite a sublime 61-ball 101 not out from Kohli, three-time runners-up RCB failed to defend 198 in the must-win game. Riding on the back of Shubman Gill's 104 not out, GT beat RCB by six wickets in Bengaluru.

Thus, RCB faltered once again in an IPL season. In 16 editions, the Bengaluru-based franchise has played the final thrice (in 2009, 2011 and 2016) and featured in the top four in eight seasons. They remain one of the three franchises -- part of the IPL since its inception in 2008 -- to have not won the elusive trophy. Kohli, who has been part of the RCB franchise since 2008, has time and again revealed that he has no intentions of leaving the Bengaluru camp, but former England captain Kevin Pietersen shared a bold suggestion for the ex-Indian captain. He wants Kohli to play for his home franchise, i.e. the Delhi Capitals (DC).

"Time for VIRAT to make the move to the capital city! #IPL," Pietersen tweeted.

'Time for...': Kevin Pietersen suggests Virat Kohli to join THIS franchise after RCB's IPL 2023 ouster

Virat Kohli scored his second straight ton during match 70 of IPL 2023, on Sunday (May 21), as the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in Bengaluru with an aim to win and enter the playoffs. Despite Kohli's 61-ball 101 not out, RCB went down in a must-win clash to lose by six wickets in the final over courtesy of Gujarat opener Shubman Gill's unbeaten 104.

During GT's run-chase, they were going strong courtesy of a splendid 123-run second-wicket stand between Gill and Vijay Shankar (35-ball 53). Vijaykumar Vyshak got rid of Shankar in the 16th over with Kohli completing the catch at the deep. While Kohli took the catch with ease, he hurt his knee and went out of the field. He never returned and watched his team bottle the must-win game in the end overs. Thus, RCB head coach Sanjay Bangar gave a massive update on Kohli's injury status after his team's elimination from IPL 2023.

IPL 2023: RCB head coach Sanjay Bangar provides injury update for Virat Kohli ahead of WTC final

With just two matches to go in the Indian Premier League (IPL) league phase, all eyes are focussed upon the playoff scenario as five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lead the scramble for one place. Currently, RCB stand in pole position to make the playoffs but will have to be at their fluent best against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday, May 21.

What is on offer for Sunday?

Mumbai, Bangalore and Rajasthan will have a decisive day on Sunday as they all could make the playoffs with a certain set of results achieved. In the early start, five-time champions Mumbai will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium while RCB will play GT at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in the final league match of the IPL 2023 season.

Currently, all three – MI, RCB and RR are on 14 points and their net run rates are -0.128, 0.180 and 0.148 respectively.

What needs to happen for MI?

Rohit Sharma’s side will have to win at any cost on Sunday evening to stand a chance to make the playoffs. A defeat will see an end to their campaign while a washout remains out of reckoning as there is no rain expected in the city of dreams. MI’s win will be academic if RCB win their contest against GT meaning they will be out of the IPL.

MI need to win by 79 runs or more and hope RCB lose to GT, this will help them boost their NRR and go better than Faf du Plessis’s side.

What will propel RCB into playoffs?

As things stand, a win will see RCB through to the playoffs with no burden of margin of win as they will end up with better NRR than MI, even if they win the earlier match against SRH. RCB can still go through with a defeat if they lose by five or fewer runs or with three balls to spare against GT; this is coupled with a small-margin win for MI.

A defeat for RCB by five runs or more will see their NRR worsen and finish fifth, so in probability RCB will have to win.

What will prevent RR's exit?

RR still have a realistic chance of making the playoffs but will need help from defending champions GT. A defeat for RCB by more than five runs or with more than three balls to spare will see RR end with better NRR but will also need MI to lose to SRH.

Rinku Singh almost pulls off another comeback

Chasing 177, KKR made a good start to their innings with Jason Roy (45) and Venkatesh Iyer (24) stitching 61 runs for the opening wicket. However, KKR lost wickets at regular intervals after powerplay and were reduced to 120/5. KKR’s season hero Rinku Singh then took matters into his own hands and almost pulled another dramatic comeback.

Needing 41 runs to win in the final two overs, Rinku smashed Naveen-ul-Haq for three consecutive sixes while also hitting a six to bring the equation to 21 runs off the final over. However, some accurate bowling by Yash Thakur denied Rinku any realistic chance of opening big opportunities despite being hit for two sixes. Needing eight runs of the final ball, Rinku hit a six but could not prevent another defeat for KKR.

Thakur and Ravi Bishnoi both ended with two wickets each for LSG while Krunal Pandya and Krishnappa Gowtham ended with one success each.

Fiery spells from Vaibhav Arora, Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine helped KKR restrict LSG to 176/8. Nicholas Pooran scored the highest for LSG with 58 off 30 while Quinton de Kock played a knock of 28 runs. For KKR, Vaibhav, Shardul and Narine bagged two wickets each.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ruturaj Gaikwad was at his fluent best on Saturday, May 20 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against Delhi Capitals (DC) as he smashed the opposition bowlers left, right and center in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gaikwad, 2021 IPL Orange Cap winner smashed five sixes for CSK as they look to secure a top-two finish to play in the Qualifier One of the Playoffs next week.

Gaikwad and Co run riot in Delhi

Coming into the contest, CSK were in danger of not only missing out on the top two finish but also entirely from the top four, so they needed to make sure of a positive start. Gaikwad and Conway were at their fluent best as they started on a positive note and scored 52 runs for no wickets.

In the 12th over, Ruturaj took his game to another level and scored three consecutive sixes after scoring his latest fifty. The Maharashtra batter looked unstoppable and looked destined for another hundred before he was scalped by Chetan Sakariya on the third ball of the 15th over. However, he did make an impression with a 79-run knock which consisted of 3 fours and 7 sixes and was scoring at a strike rate of 158.

On the flip side he was well supported by his partner in crime Devon Conway, he was in fluent form as well. Conway ended with 87 runs off 52 deliveries and scored 11 fours and 3 sixes and struck at 167.

CSK playoff berth

Coming into the contest, CSK needed a win to have a chance of qualifying for the Qualifier 1 and they did their first job with perfection after putting up 223/3 in their 20 overs. A top-two finish will guarantee two opportunities for teams to make the final of the IPL 2023 which takes place on May 28 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Yashasvi Jaiswal (50) and Devdutt Padikkal (51) were the heroes of the match for RR while Shimron Hetmyer (46) played an important knock to take the visitors home. RR will now require a helping hand from Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to make the playoffs at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) expense.

RR make keep playoff hopes alive

For the second evening in a row, a score of 188 was chased successfully as RR needed some final over-thrills. The visiting side at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala started poorly after Jos Buttler was dismissed for a third consecutive duck in the second over. Jaiswal and Padikkal then played a useful knock as they stitched together a partnership of 73 runs to guide RR to a good chase.

However, quick-fire wickets for PBKS saw the home side come back into the contest with Sanju Samson (2) and Padikkal departing quickly. On the fourth ball of the last over RR won the contest and kept their narrow hopes alive. The defeat also saw PBKS end the campaign on 12 points from 14 matches and were officially eliminated from the playoff race.

IPL 2023: Chris Gayle comes up with special praise for Virat after 6th ton, says 'I was lonely and bored'

Virat Kohli headlined Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) 187-run chase versus bottom-ranked Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 65 of IPL 2023 edition on Thursday (May 18) in Hyderabad. After Heinrich Klaasen's 104, off 51 balls, propelled SRH to 186 for 5, RCB rode on an impressive 172-run opening stand between centurion Kohli (63-ball 100) and skipper Faf du Plessis (47-ball 71) to win by eight wickets in 19.2 overs.

After the match, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar -- who remains quite active on social media platforms -- shared a tweet for Kohli and lauded the former Indian and RCB skipper for his splendid knock, laced with 12 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 158.73. This was Kohli's 6th IPL hundred and first since the 2019 edition.

"It was evident that this would be Virat’s day from the very first ball when he played that cover drive. Virat and Faf both looked in total control, they not only played many big shots but also ran rather well between the wickets to build a successful partnership. 186 wasn’t a big enough total for the way they both batted," said Tendulkar in his tweet.

'It was evident...': Sachin Tendulkar lauds Virat Kohli after his 6th IPL ton during RCB-SRH tie

Early this month, Mumbai Indians (MI) were dealt with a major blow as speedster Jofra Archer got ruled out of the IPL 2023 edition. Archer featured in only five games for the Rohit Sharma-led franchise and accounted for a mere two wickets at an economy rate of 9.50. With the recurrence of stress fracture in his right elbow, he is now also out of the upcoming English summer, to miss Ashes 2023.

A lot was expected from Archer in the MI jersey. Having returned to international cricket, early this year, after almost 24 months, the 28-year-old never looked in his elements in IPL 2023, not bowling quick and looking threatening with the ball. After his return home, as the England Cricket Board (ECB) is monitoring his recovery, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Archer left, right and centre.

'MI paid big money for him and what has he given in return?'

Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "What has been Mumbai Indians experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season. They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn't seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realised when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace. "

He further opined, "In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country's cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit, but still came over. If he was committed to the franchise, who probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn't going to play and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK."

'This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted'

Gavaskar added, "A day later, a story appears that he is going to get a multi-million-pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play for their team in the various leagues in the world. This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted. Mumbai Indians are not fools to sign a lame horse for any future race. Make no mistake, Mumbai Indians won't be amused at the turn of events and now that they have come back well in the tournament without his presence, he will be lucky if he gets his full fee for the IPL and if he does then he would do well to give half to his favourite charity."

"There's simply no point paying even one rupee for a player, however big a name he may be, if he is not going to be available for the entire tournament. It's got to be the player's choice to pick playing for an IPL franchise or his country. Now, Archer is running against time to fully recover and stage a comeback in the English line-up for their ODI WC defence, later this year in India.

'MI paid big money for him and what has he given in return?' Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "What has been Mumbai Indians experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season. They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn't seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realised when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace. " He further opined, "In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country's cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit, but still came over. If he was committed to the franchise, who probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn't going to play and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK." Also Read: SA will be missing a trick if they don't take Faf du Plessis to ODI World Cup, opines RCB star Dinesh Karthik 'This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted' Gavaskar added, "A day later, a story appears that he is going to get a multi-million-pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play for their team in the various leagues in the world. This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted. Mumbai Indians are not fools to sign a lame horse for any future race. Make no mistake, Mumbai Indians won't be amused at the turn of events and now that they have come back well in the tournament without his presence, he will be lucky if he gets his full fee for the IPL and if he does then he would do well to give half to his favourite charity." "There's simply no point paying even one rupee for a player, however big a name he may be, if he is not going to be available for the entire tournament. It's got to be the player's choice to pick playing for an IPL franchise or his country. Full marks to him if he chooses country over IPL, but if he chooses IPL then he has to fulfil his commitments totally and not make some excuse and leave early, especially towards the time when qualifying for the Playoffs becomes crucial."
Virat’s keeps RCB in playoff hunt

Asked to chase 187 runs after a quickfire ton from Heinrich Klaasen, it was Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis who did the trick for RCB as they dominated from the first ball. Virat brought his first IPL ton in four years after he smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six on the fourth ball of the 18th over. While he was dismissed on the very next ball, the job was already done for the away side as Virat’s innings consisted of 4 sixes and 12 fours as scored at a strike rate of 159.

Faf du Plessis soon followed Virat, but he too had done his job and departed on 73 which consisted of 2 sixes and 7 fours. The duo put together an opening stand of 172 runs and paved the way for RCB to go fourth in the IPL standings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natrajan both ended with a wicket but had a relatively off day against Virat and Faf. Glenn Maxwell (5) and Michael Bracewell (4) then saw RCB home for a comfortable win.

RCB end their league campaign against leaders Gujarat Titans (GT) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, May 21.
Why change in kits for LSG?

Krunal Pandya’s side so far has been in great form and have scalped 15 points from 13 matches and will be in the hunt for a place in Qualifier 1. Kolkata is the home of defending Indian Super League (ISL) champions Mohun Bagan, partially owned by LSG’s owner Sanjiv Goenka and have close ties with the city. To pay tribute to them LSG will don green and maroon colour kits at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

LSG’s Twitter handle shared pictures of Kolkata's iconic places like Eden Gardens, Howrah Bridge, Mohun Bagan's iconic Salt Lake Stadium and College Street, Asia's largest book street.

IPL 2023: Krunal Pandya's Lucknow Super Giants to change kit colours vs KKR for THIS reason | Know More

Shubman Gill's glorious run at the highest level continues. Ever since he slammed his maiden international hundred, in August 2022, he has been unstoppable. Gill came into the IPL 2023 edition on the back of twin tons in Tests, a double hundred in ODIs, maiden T20I century and scored his first-ever IPL century in Gujarat Titans' (GT) 34-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 62 on Monday (May 15).

Gill occupies the second spot in the list of batters with most runs in IPL 2023 -- with 576 runs in 13 games at an average of 48 and strike rate close to 150 (146.19) with four fifties and a ton. The right-hander is displaying his class and has certainly grown in stature in recent times. Thus, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim on Gill.

'As big as Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar'

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Uthappa -- IPL winner with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) -- said, “I definitely see him having the potential of becoming someone as big as Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar. I certainly think he has got the stuff. He is a phenomenal player who is in exceptional form and is playing some exceptional cricket at the moment."

Definitely see Gill becoming as big as Kohli or Tendulkar: Former CSK opener lavishes huge praise on GT star

The IPL 2023 edition has been a huge hit. Every year, the league stage goes down to the wire. Often, teams are seen fighting hard for one, or more, remaining playoffs spots till the last day of the league games. This year, the defending champions, Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), remain the only side to have booked a slot in the playoffs, having ensured a top-two finish as well. However, as many as seven franchises remain in the fray to end with the remaining three spots with only four days left in the league stage.

To date, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) remain the only two teams out of this year's edition. So far, 64 out of the 70 league games have been done and dusted -- i.e. 91.42% -- but Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are still competing to enter the last four.

On Wednesday (May 17), David Warner-led DC franchise defeated PBKS by 15 runs, in match 64, to not only take Shikhar Dhawan & Co. closer to early elimination but further complicate the playoffs race.

Here's what remaining seven teams have to do to grab the three available playoff tickets and join Hardik-led GT -

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni's Yellow Army will confirm a place in the last four with a win over DC in their last league game on Saturday (May 20) in New Delhi. They can even progress ahead without adding to their points tally (15) if RCB or MI lose at least one of their remaining games.

Lucknow Super Giants: Krunal Pandya's LSG won a crucial home game, on Tuesday (May 17), versus MI. Thus, they are also in a safe position compared to other teams. A win will confirm a playoff berth for them and they can even go ahead with a loss but will need MI or RCB to lose one game, at least.

Mumbai Indians: The five-time champions will secure a berth in the last four with a win over SRH in their last match and if RCB lose at least one of their last two league fixtures.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: The Virat Kohli-starrer RCB can go ahead with wins in their remaining two games. If the three-time runners-up lose one, it will help CSK and LSG -- as stated above -- but the Bengaluru-based team will have to depend on how MI, KKR, RR, and PBKS fare in their last match. As of now, they have a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) than MI, RR, KKR and PBKS at +0.166.

Also Read: IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals hurt Punjab Kings' playoff chances with 15-run win

Rajasthan Royals: The Sanju Samson-led Royals have certainly lost the plot after a brilliant start (with four wins from their first five fixtures). They are left with one more game, versus PBKS on Friday (May 19) in Dharamshala. If they earn a massive victory and MI, RCB and KKR lose their remaining games, they can still enter the playoffs.

Kolkata Knight Riders: The two-time winners still have an outside chance to feature in the last four. If they get the better of LSG by a handsome margin, they can move past MI and then hope for MI and RCB to lose their remaining encounters. Their journey to the playoffs is more complicated as they will still have to rely on the outcome of the PBKS-RR face-off. For Rana & Co.'s progression, they will pray for Punjab's close win over the Royals or for the game to end in a draw.

Punjab Kings: Punjab have made life much difficult for them with a loss to Warner & Co. in Dharamshala. They, however, remain alive in the playoffs race by the barest of margins. They need to beat RR convincingly and hope for the likes of MI, RCB, and KKR to concede their remaining games.

Also Read: Explained: From powerplay basher to able enforcer! Yashasvi Jaiswal's IPL 2023 success decoded

If this happens, MI and PBKS will end at 14 points each whereas RCB, KKR, and RR will finish dozen points apiece. Thus, NRR will come into play between Mumbai and Punjab for one to join the playoffs.

Currently, GT are set to play the Qualifier 1, in Chennai. The likes of CSK and Lucknow have a great chance to join the last four whereas one among MI and RCB is likely to make the cut as well. Nonetheless, IPL 2023 has pulled off some big surprises already and, hence, anything is possible in the remaining four days of the league games.

On Thursday (May 18), the Faf du Plessis-led Bengaluru franchise will lock horns with the bottom-ranked SRH in Hyderabad in match 65.

Needless to say, all other teams will also have an eye on the encounter.

Here's what remaining seven teams have to do to grab the three available playoff tickets and join Hardik-led GT - Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni's Yellow Army will confirm a place in the last four with a win over DC in their last league game on Saturday (May 20) in New Delhi. Yashasvi Jaiswal's IPL 2023 success decoded If this happens, MI and PBKS will end at 14 points each whereas RCB, KKR, and RR will finish dozen points apiece.
