Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) found the right balance with their well thought out acquisitions at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 player Auction held in Mumbai on Saturday. RCB’s seven bids to fill the vacant spots and form a bold squad for the upcoming season were the result of extensive planning and strategy by the proficient backroom staff — which includes head coach Luke Williams, assistant head coach and head of scouting Malolan Rangarajan — with some crucial tactical inputs from skipper Smriti Mandhana.

Mandhana expressed her delight over auction picks and said the planning for the auction began after the first season only and they were keen to focus more on experienced bowlers who have bowled in Indian conditions.

The team secured one of the country’s most experienced spinners and Khel Ratna awardee Ekta Bisht (₹60 lakh), who is the first Indian woman to take a hat-trick in the T20 Internationals. They further added pace to their attack by picking England’s Kate Cross (₹30 lakh) and young Indian all-rounder Simran Bahadur (₹30 lakh).

As part of RCB’s commitment to provide a platform for local young talents, they picked a promising domestic all-rounder Shubha Satheesh (₹10 lakh) from Bengaluru before adding 2016 Women’s Asia Cup-winner S Meghana (₹30 lakh) into the squad. Australian spin all-rounders Georgia Wareham (₹40 lakh) and Sophie Molineux (₹30 lakh) were the other two foreign acquisitions of the franchise to complete a strong 18-member squad.

Talking about the auction and the selection of players, Rajesh V Menon, VP and Head of RCB, said: “There are no shortcuts to building a team. You make the foundation brick by brick every season. We had lots of learnings from last year, and our main objective was to take those learnings into the auction, plug those gaps, and build a squad that would give us outstanding balance and flexibility to play in any conditions”

RCB, known for its Play Bold philosophy, not only snatched players who are good with the ball but also those who are skillful with the bat as well.

“Bowling is definitely very important in T20s and a good bowling side wins you competition and this year we were looking to strengthen our spin unit and also look for overseas pacers who can complement Renuka [Singh] well. We have Kate Cross now and I think she will complement Renuka well in the power play with both swinging the other way. And with Molineux and Wareham, the bowling looks very experienced. Plus we have the likes of Shreyanka [Patil] and also [Sophie] Devine and [Ellyse] Perry,” Mandhana said.

Further explaining RCB’s approach and strategy behind the auction, the assistant head coach and head of scouting, Malolan said: “One of the things RCB did really well is to have strong Indian domestic core in Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, Renuka Singh, Kanika Ahuja and Shreyanka Patil, who form potentially your top five starters in the playing eleven, we have of a very good Indian core. Now, you add to that Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry and Heather Knight, you have one half of the puzzle already sorted. We had a very focused approach to our auction as to how we can better this team with the options available out there. Our focus was to get a well-balanced bowling unit that can perform under any conditions we may encounter.”

Former India opener and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has opened up on his feuds with Virat Kohli and Sreesanth as he continues to lure the attention of the cricketing fraternity. Gambhir, recently in the news for his latest row with former speedster&nbsp;Sreesanth stated that he backs his players and no one can walk over them. Earlier this year during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Gambhir was involved in a spat with former India captain Virat Kohli when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) met Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

<h2>Gambhir defends action</h2>

"As a mentor, no one can come and walk over my players, and I have a very different belief. Until the game was on, I had no right to interfere. Once the game is over and someone still gets into a heated argument with my players, I have all the right to defend them," Gambhir said on the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash.

On Monday (Dec 4), Sreesanth alleged that Gambhir called him a fixer during the Legends League Cricket (LLC) eliminator clash. He then took to his social media handles to call out Gambhir for his actions.

On the field, both Gambhir and Sreesanth were separated by the on-field umpires. The LLC management has now moved swiftly and has launched an investigation into&nbsp;the incident. They have also stated that there will be swift action taken if either player is found guilty.

The LLC also issued a legal notice to Sreesanth on Friday as they continue to resolve the issue ahead of Saturday’s final.

'He already told...': CSK CEO on MS Dhoni turning up for 2024 season

In a sensational development on Sunday (Nov 26) evening, Hardik Pandya returned to record five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians. On the trade deadline day, the Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper swapped the 2022 champions for MI as he returned to the team where he started his journey. Pandya, a five-time champion himself will don the blue colours of MI in the 2024 season with eyes now cast on the IPL auctions happening on December 19 in Dubai.

<h2>Hardik Pandya returns</h2>

“The feeling of coming back to Mumbai is very special for a lot of reasons. How my cricketing journey started in 2015 with MI with them noticing me in 2013, you know when I look back and how my span of 10 years has been something very special. It has not sunk in yet that I am finally back where my whole cricketing journey started. I have achieved all the possible things they have been the most important part of my life. I have special bonds with Aakash and the whole family as they have been with me in my thick and thin and it is more emotional,” Hardik added in his first interview after his return to Mumbai Indians.

<h2>Deadline day drama</h2>

Sunday proved to be a crucial day for IPL teams where eyes were firmly cast on making the deadline day switch. Pandya along with Cameron Green was on the hotlist of players who were rumoured to be released. However, as the deadline neared, the move looked off by 5 pm on Sunday with GT set to retain their priced asset. However, at the 11th hour, MI managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat as they acquired Pandya while Green was traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

The move turned out to be a blockbuster affair as the teams are now intended to focus on the auctions which take place on December 19. With players being released, the teams will have a significant amount to spend in the auctions as host players are set to enter the market.

RR retained and released list: The inaugural winner of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals (RR), is another star-studded team in the tournament. Led by keeper-batter Sanju Samson, and with several match-winners in the squad, they have the potential to fight for their second IPL trophy come the 17th edition.&nbsp;

Finishing fifth in IPL 2023 and failing to qualify for the playoffs would further boost the RR franchise to make the best bids at the IPL 2024 mini-auction. With all eyes on the D-Day, scheduled in Dubai on Tuesday (Dec 19), Rajasthan Royals’ think tank will have a lot of homework to do.&nbsp;

RR also became the first team to complete a trade ahead of the IPL 2024 mini-auction, with batter Devdutt Padikkal joining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and&nbsp;while their seamer Avesh Khan coming into the Rajasthan-based franchise.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, RR retained the core but let go of players who either failed to leave a mark last season or don’t fit in their setup moving forward. Outside of Padikkal, who didn't get regular games in the IPL 2023 due to overcrowded top-order, RR let go of some top foreign names, including Joe Root and Jason Holder.

Besides, the Indian spin-bowling pair of KC Cariappa and Murugan Ashwin are also released.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is set to be released by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a little more than a year after acquiring his services at the mini-auction, according to Crizbuzz. Stokes was bought by the five-time champions for a hefty fee of $1.98 million (Rs 16.25 crore).&nbsp;

Stokes' exclusion from the CSK squad is likely based on his unavailability for the 2024 season. After the end of a disastrous World Cup campaign with England, Stokes revealed that he will have to undergo surgery on his left knee which will require at least a two-month recovery period.&nbsp;

The CSK hierarchy is unwilling to take chances of Stokes turning up fine for the league, scheduled for March-May 2024. Notably, communication between CSK and Stokes' camp has been inconclusive even after the South Indian side approached the former England captain.&nbsp;

"We would not consider releasing Stokes if he could be available because he is a big match player, and we hold him in the highest regard. But if he can't make it to the season, we will have blocked Rs 16 crore with which we could acquire some quality players," a CSK official was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;

<h2>Stokes' CSK inclusion&nbsp;</h2>

At the time of the auction, Stokes' inclusion in the CSK squad was seen as a future move with many pundits naming him as the successor of MS Dhoni. There were widespread rumours that Dhoni would hang up his boots at the end of the campaign last year. However, after CSK won the trophy, it appears that Dhoni would give another year of his services to CSK.

While CSK won the title, Stokes only played two games in the season&nbsp;which was marred by injuries. While any other team would have felt Stokes' absence, CSK went on to lift another title, beating Gujarat Titans in the final.&nbsp;

Having shared the dressing room with most of the current and former players (associated in some capacity with MI), Malinga knows the environment and is excited to resume in his new role come IPL 2024.&nbsp;

Outside of joining hands with the Mumbai Indians IPL franchise, Malinga is already coaching the MI Cape Town team in the SA20 league, South Africa, and MI New York in Major League Cricket, USA.

In a statement released on Friday, Malinga expressed his gratitude for being appointed MI’s new bowling coach and staying connected with the franchise where it all started for him in this league in 2009.

“It is truly an honour for me to be appointed Bowling Coach of Mumbai Indians, and my journey in the OneFamily continues, following MI New York and MI Cape Town,” said Malinga.&nbsp;

“I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Paltan.”

A veteran of the Indian Premier League, Malinga is a four-time IPL winner, having won two now-discarded Champions League trophies before. Upon leaving MI after spending 13 seasons, Malinga joined the inaugural IPL winners, Rajasthan Royals, in 2022, guiding them to their first final in many years.&nbsp;

<h2>Malinga replaces Bond</h2>

Shane Bond, another veteran of world cricket, had bid adieu to the Mumbai Indians family after spending nine years with the franchise. On Wednesday, he announced his separation from MI, thanking the owners and the franchise for everything.

"I would like to thank the Ambani family for the opportunity to be part of MI One Family for the last nine seasons. It has been an incredible experience with so many great memories on and off the field. I have been lucky enough to work with and have strong relationships with so many great people, both players and staff. I will miss them all and wish them all the best for the future. Finally, thanks to the MI Paltan for their support as well,” Bond said in a statement.

“It is truly an honour for me to be appointed Bowling Coach of Mumbai Indians, and my journey in the OneFamily continues, following MI New York and MI Cape Town,” said Malinga. “I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Paltan.” A veteran of the Indian Premier League, Malinga is a four-time IPL winner, having won two now-discarded Champions League trophies before. Upon leaving MI after spending 13 seasons, Malinga joined the inaugural IPL winners, Rajasthan Royals, in 2022, guiding them to their first final in many years. Malinga replaces Bond Shane Bond, another veteran of world cricket, had bid adieu to the Mumbai Indians family after spending nine years with the franchise. 🫡 From Legends to Youngsters, everyone attended Bondy’s class 💙#OneFamily #MumbaiIndians #MumbaiMeriJaan pic.twitter.com/370qLED0vv — Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) October 18, 2023 × WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Mitchell Starc has intended to return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after an eight-year exile. Starc, who was last seen in IPL action in 2015, confirmed his plans for the 2024 edition on Thursday, September 7. Starc was named in Australia’s ODI World Cup squad on Wednesday as they bid for their sixth title in the 50-over format. Starc was also on the cards of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the past but never played a single game.

<h2>Starc open to IPL return</h2>

"I'm definitely going back in (next) year," Starc told the Willow Talk cricket podcast.

"Amongst other things, it's a great lead up to the T20 World Cup.

"So a good opportunity to see if anyone's interested in the IPL, then lead into the T20 World Cup.

"And it's somewhat of a quiet winter next year … in comparison to this winter, so I think a perfect opportunity to put my name in,” Starc said on his stance on the IPL.

If Starc does make his comeback to the most lucrative cricket league in the world, it will be his first appearance at the marquee tournament since 2015. He last appeared for RCB in the 2015 edition where he scalped 20 wickets having also enjoyed a stellar ODI World Cup that year. He was named Player of the Tournament at the World Cup. In 27 IPL appearances, Starc has scalped 34 wickets with a best of 15/4 while also scoring 96 runs in that period.

<h2>Starc’s row with KKR</h2>

Over the years, Starc has been skipping the mega-rich IPL format for several reasons including injuries, COVID-19, and national team duties. His engagement with KKR in 2018 sparked a big brawl as he did not play for the franchise despite them splashing A$1.8 million. He had a legal battle with an insurance firm that was settled in 2020.

The veteran pacer is one of the seven players from the 2015 ODI World Cup winning squad that will board the flight for India. Australia will have eyes on their sixth ODI World Cup having won the tournament in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015. The contingent will be led by Pat Cummins along with experienced players like Steve Smith, David Warner, and Josh Hazlewood among others.

Former RCB pacer Mitchell Starc to end IPL exile, confirms return plans for 2024 edition

England’s Ashes 2023 hero Zak Crawley is eyeing a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season as he continues his purple patch. The English opener had stellar Ashes where he was England’s top scorer in the series and also played the best individual innings with 189 runs in the Manchester Test. He now eyes a long run in the white-ball format while also trying to attract a host of teams in the IPL for his signature.

<h2>Crawley eyes white-ball breakthrough</h2>

"I'd love to go on that tour. We'll have to see how selection goes but the Caribbean is an awesome place to play - and I haven't had the chance to go on a white ball tour for England yet, so any opportunity I get would be awesome. If they want me for that tour, I'd absolutely love to go," Crawley told ESPNcricinfo.

The star England batter, now 25, has been capped three times in the ODI format for the national side with no caps in T20Is. However, he has been part of the team furniture in the red-ball format and has amassed more than 2000 runs for the national side.

<h2>Crawley opens up on IPL stint</h2>

Speaking on a possible stint in the IPL, he thinks the experience could be awesome and something he would like to cherish. He thinks it is a big league where he can play his best cricket in the white-ball format.

"It's the biggest franchise tournament in the world. It's the only place to see all the best playing against each other. It's great cricket and to be able to test yourself in that tournament would be awesome.

"We'll see how I go. If I score some runs and it looks like I've half a chance then, then potentially I will [put my name forward]. I'm a realistic guy though, so if I feel like there's no chance then I won't… If I was good enough one day to play in the IPL and someone wanted me, then I'd absolutely love to go."

Crawley is currently engaged in The Hundred’s third season and was seen taking part for Manchester Originals five days after the conclusion of the Ashes 2023. England will soon announce their squad for the ODI World Cup, but there remains a very remote chance of him making the squad of the defending World Champions.

Zak Crawley targets IPL 2024 after resounding Ashes for England - I'd love to go on that tour

MS Dhoni shares a great rapport with several current Indian players. Often, the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and the likes have expressed their gratitude towards the former Indian captain for guiding them during their early days. Since 2018, Dhoni's relationship with Deepak Chahar has also been talked about. The two have been playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since their readmission in the Indian Premier League in 2018 and share a great camaraderie on and outside the field.&nbsp;

While Chahar is Dhoni's go-to-bowler, especially, in the early overs, he has improved bowling at the death as well under his Chennai captain's guidance. Nonetheless, Chahar has also been scolded by the former Indian captain on the field. Recently, Dhoni shed light on his relationship with Chahar in a hilarious manner.&nbsp;

<h2>'In my lifetime, I won't see him mature'</h2>

"Deepak Chahar is like a drug, if he is not there, you would think, where is he - if he is around, you would think, why he is here - good part is that he is maturing but he takes time and that is the problem, in my lifetime, I won't see him matured (smiles)," Dhoni said during the launch of Tamil film Lets Get Married, under his own&nbsp;production company called the Dhoni Entertainment.

During IPL 2023, Chahar claimed 13 wickets in 10 games and played a pivotal role in Dhoni-led Chennai's fifth IPL title. Talking about the skipper, Thala Dhoni marshalled his troops brilliantly, kept well behind the stumps and smacked as many as 10 sixes while playing several vital cameos throughout the season.&nbsp;

At present, Chahar is not part of India's squads for the upcoming West Indies tour, where the national side will play two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. Meanwhile, the 42-year-old Dhoni is busy with his non-cricketing assignments and not much his known whether he will return for IPL 2024. After leading his side to the IPL 2023 triumph, he stated that he will try to come back but nothing is official.

The Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) had their moments in the last two IPL seasons, in 2022 and 2023, but failed to get hold of the trophy. Riyan Parag, who debuted in IPL during RR's campaign in 2019, has been a part of the one-time winners and been given a long rope despite his poor returns.

So far, Parag has 600 runs in 54 games at 123.97 and a woeful average of 16.22. However, he enjoyed a long rope in the playing XI after sitting out on a few games during IPL 2023. Amid his below-par returns, many former cricketers and experts of the game have slammed the 21-year-old as he has immense potential but fails to get going.

Recently, RR's official Twitter account shared a video with the caption: “Trolled and tested but tough as ever. This is Riyan Parag: Raw and real.” The clip opens&nbsp;with cricket analyst and pundit Joy Bhattacharjya taking a dig at the Assam all-rounder, claiming Rajasthan have played with five bowlers, five batters, and Parag during an old video from Cricbuzz live.

<h2>'Hey, I know this is how you play cricket, but if you do this....'</h2>

To this, Parag has now responded to all his critics and asked former cricketers and commentators to message him directly rather than taking a dig on social media or other platforms. He started by saying, "People pay their hard-earned money to come and watch us perform, not play. Us not performing, them hating, I understand."

“But verified accounts, ex-cricketers, commentators, when they are posting about this on social media when they are taking out time to tweet about me, you can just text me. I would honestly just love that, because if anyone can just DM me and say ‘Hey, I know this is how you play cricket, but if you do this, you might have a better chance of performing,’"&nbsp;highlighted Parag.

Parag went on to add that he was disappointed sitting out during RR's games versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2023. "There were two games I was really looking forward to this year, one was Mumbai, and one was RCB, and I didn’t play both," he revealed.

Parag added, "Everything was sorted, I was fully ready, I was preparing very hard before the game. I was very very disappointed not to go to Bangalore, cause that’s a team I love playing against. I look up to Virat so much and sharing the field with him is obviously very big for me. Beating them is a joy for me. But then you have to go back to the hotel, look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I’ve been left out."

In the video, R Ashwin was seen praising Parag.&nbsp;The Indian spinner&nbsp;said the youngster is one who is 'exceptionally skilled and is only a matter of time before he turns a corner.' With criticism from all corners for his poor form, Parag will be determined to prove Ashwin right,&nbsp;perform in the domestic circuit as well as make a mark in next year's IPL.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) parted ways with first-team coaching staff Shane Watson and Ajit Agarkar on Thursday, June 29 after suffering a turbulent campaign. DC finished ninth in the IPL 2023 standings and were bottom of the league for the first half of the season. While Agarkar and Watson have departed, there was no word on the future of Ricky Ponting, and Sourav Ganguly who are also associated with the team.

<h2>Delhi waves&nbsp;goodbye to Agarkar, Watson</h2>

A social media post was put by the DC team thanking the duo of Watson and Agrakar.&nbsp;“You’ll always have a place to call home here. Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavours,” the post read.

DC haven’t enjoyed a great deal of success in recent times and have failed to build on the few successes, having finished runners-up in the IPL 2020. The team lost five consecutive matches at the start of the season which cost them a place in the playoffs despite bringing their campaign back on route.

"Obviously, nothing will happen mid-season but the poor result for two successive seasons will have its share of repercussions when JSW and GMR, the two co-owners sit back and take stock of the season," an IPL source tracking the franchise told PTI.

"So you will certainly not have this jumbo coaching staff next season for sure. There will be a few heads that might roll," the source added.

In the 2023 campaign, DC missed the services of skipper Rishabh Pant, who suffered serious injuries in a car accident in December 2022. In Pant’s absence, legendary Australian cricketer David Warner led the Delhi franchise.

<h2>Agarkar linked with vacant selectors post</h2>

However,&nbsp;not all has gone wrong for Agarkar. The former Mumbai bowling all-rounder could soon apply his trade as the head of the selection committee. Few reports on Thursday, June 29 have linked Agarkar with the vacant post as he is one of the ideal candidates to succeed Chetan Sharma. The former India bowler resigned from his post as the selector at the start of the year and since then no permanent appointment has been made.

If Agarkar does become the head of the selection committee, he will face a stern challenge to put up a team capable of winning the World Cup in October and November.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR) are set to make their first move for the 2024 season as they look to bolster the side. While the attention of the world is on the ODI World Cup and the qualifiers, RR have secretly turned their attention to Jos Buttler as they plan to keep him for another four years with the team. According to a report, the franchise is set to offer a four-year lucrative deal to Buttler having shined for the side in the IPL.

<h2>Buttler set for big contract</h2>

"England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to be offered a landmark four-year deal by his Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals," a report from The Telegraph said.

"It is understood that the offer to Buttler is yet to be formally tabled, and its unclear whether the T20 World Cup winning captain intends to accept the deal,” the report added.

Buttler, 32, led England to their second T20 World Cup success in 2022 and had a stellar year with the IPL franchise as well. Buttler won the Orange Cap in the 2022 season and led the franchise to their first final in 14 years of the IPL in 2022. He scored a whopping 863 runs in the season that time in 17 matches but failed to deliver RR’s second IPL title.

<h2>Buttler’s IPL heroics</h2>

Astonishingly, he scored four IPL hundreds in 2022 along with four fifties with a best of 116. However, the 2023 IPL season was below-par for him as he ended with just 392 runs from 14 matches while scoring four fifties. RR also failed to reach the playoffs of the IPL having faced elimination after the final league game.

Away from the spotlight of the Ashes 2023, Buttler will be a key member of the England squad for the ODI World Cup. He will lead the side in the championship&nbsp;in India and could become just the second captain to win both the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup after MS Dhoni of India. England, under Buttler, will enter the ODI World Cup in India as the defending champions, having got the better of New Zealand in the 2019 showdown.

Rajasthan Royals to offer multi-year contract to THIS World Cup-winning star after shining in IPL - Reports

The Indian Cricket team last won an ICC trophy in the year 2013, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. The Men in Blue have time and again failed at the knockout stages of ICC but legendary West Indies captain Clive Lloyd still thinks the team has got the firepower to add some silverware.&nbsp;

“I think the future of the Indian team is very good and all because of IPL. There is every reason to believe you will have a very good 50 overside. You have got a terrific Test side, and it's just a matter of time before you win a big tournament. Things go in cycles and it will happen in the future, I am sure," Clive Lloyd explained while talking to RevSportz.

A lot has been said about the Indian Premier League (IPL), following Team India’s defeat against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Many experts and former cricketers stated that Indian cricketers should not solely focus on T20 competition. Clive Lloyd shared his take on the importance of the IPL. "Indian players now know what they are worth. But I think that if Indian Premier League is such an important part of their lives, just give them a window so that they can play IPL. Yes, a window would be excellent, I think, because they are earning a good living. And do not forget, you are giving your best part, the best days of your life to this sport. So why not be paid for it?" the World Cup-winning West Indies skipper said.

<h2>Team India’s lack of major titles</h2>

After the 2013 Champions Trophy victory, the Indian team managed to reach the finals of ICC tournaments on four occasions. The side had to face defeat in all those four matches. In their next assignment, Indian cricket team will be taking on West Indies in a two-match Test series, scheduled to start from July 12.

Clive Lloyd has this to say on Team India’s poor run in ICC tournaments

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri never shies away from speaking his mind. While exclusively speaking to The Week, the 61-year-old shed light on the need of having a smooth transition in different formats of the game. Shastri also talked about adding youngsters to the T20 team as the Indian Premier League has shown the abundance of talent in the country. “There are seniors ready to be phased out and there are youngsters ready, no question about it when it comes to T20 cricket. Lesser in 50-over cricket and even fewer in Test match cricket. Due to the IPL, there are a lot of high-quality youngsters available,” Shastri said.

<h2>The Australian example</h2>

Citing the example of the Australian cricket team and Adam Gilchrist, Ravi Shastri also explained why it is important to effortlessly pass the baton from one skipper to the other. Addressing the fact that a lot has been said and written about the Indian team in different formats, Shastri explained the case of Australia. He said that during the time of Ian Healy, Australia also took a tough but positive call at the right time. Healy was in good form and could have played more but Australian team management saw potential in Adam Gilchrist.

While talking about Team India, Ravi Shastri talked about the importance of creating a perfect mix of youth and experience. The former head coach believes that young crickets should not be just injected into the team for the sake of it. They should be good enough to compete and be on the heels of the experienced player. He further added that young talent is being nurtured through the IPL.

<h2>
Ravi Shastri on clear communication</h2>

Ravi Shastri wants the selectors and team management to have a clear line of communication with the team. This will not only help the players in understanding their roles well but will help in a smooth transition between the squads.

Team India failed to win their maiden World Test Championship (WTC) after suffering a defeat at the hands of Australia earlier this month. The Rohit Sharma-led side will kick off the new WTC cycle with a two-match series against West Indies. The Test series between India and West Indies is scheduled to start from July 12.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition got over in the early hours of Tuesday (May 30) with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edging past defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in an emphatic run-chase of 171, in 15 overs, after rain halted proceedings at the start of the second innings. Earlier, MS Dhoni won the toss and CSK invited GT to bat first. Gujarat rode on Shubman Gill's 20-ball 39, Wriddhiman Saha's 39-ball 54 and Sai Sudharsan's 47-ball 96 to post 214/4 before the Yellow Army got a revised target thanks to the rain break.

CSK rode on quickfire knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and unbeaten innings from Shivam Dube (21-ball 32*) and Ravindra Jadeja (6-ball 15 not out) to chase down the score on the last ball as GT were prevented from lifting their second title on the trot in as many seasons. Despite them finishing second, Gujarat had plenty of positives. Gill ended with 890 runs in 17 matches, including three tons and four fifties, to win the Orange Cap. Recently, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra lauded Gill and compared his season with Virat Kohli's unreal run in IPL 2016.&nbsp;

In IPL 2016, the then-Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Kohli scored 973 runs with four centuries and seven fifties at an average of&nbsp;81.08. His tally remains the most runs scored by any batter in an IPL. However, Gill came close to Kohli's tally (second-most in a season)&nbsp;-- still falling short by 83 runs -- and Chopra lauded the youngster.

<h2>'This was a proper king-type season, similar to Virat Kohli's 2016&nbsp;run'</h2>

"Gill is absolutely thrilling. The last season was good but this was a wow season. He used to be called prince earlier, but he is no longer a prince, this was a proper king-type season. The domination we saw from Virat Kohli in 2016, this was that kind of a season," said Chopra on his Youtube channel.

"He just kept growing. In fact, that innings against Mumbai (129 off 60 balls in Qualifier 2), it was like a man possessed, that he cannot do anything wrong now. He was telling people where to bowl. The Narendra Modi Stadium is a huge stadium and the guy hit sixes there," Chopra added.

Gill has now shifted his focus to India's upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they take on Australia on June 07&nbsp;at The Oval, London. He will hope to replicate his fine form in the marquee clash. In 2023, the 23-year-old has already scored a double ton in ODIs, a century in Tests and T20Is along with three in IPL 2023.

Shubman Gill's IPL 2023 was similar to Virat Kohli's 2016 run: Aakash Chopra heaps praise on GT opener

After a washout on Sunday (May 28), the IPL 2023 final kicked off on the reserve day on Monday evening (May 29) in Ahmedabad. With rain predicted for sometime in the latter stage, MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the toss and opted to bowl first versus defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT). The home side rode on in-form Shubman Gill's 20-ball 39, Wriddhiman Saha's 54 (39), and Sai Sudharsan's breathtaking 47-ball 96 to post 214/4. In reply, CSK got a revised target of 171 in 15 overs and won it on the last ball with five wickets in hand.

The game started with two tight overs from Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande before Gill and Saha took their chances. Gill was dropped off Tushar, by Chahar, and the in-form youngster made the most of his chances with some sublime strokes whereas Saha quietly upped the ante while the duo also ran hard between wickets. Against the run of play, Gill was stumped courtesy of MS Dhoni's brilliance but GT were off to a flier, being 67 for 1 in 7 overs.&nbsp;

Sudarshan came in at No. 3 and rotated strike as Saha continued to score runs before falling for a 39-ball 54. The left-hander took over from thereon and smashed every bowler in the death overs with some superb shots along with some innovation from time to time. The uncapped Indian batter returned with a 47-ball 96 along with Hardik ending with a 12-ball 21*.&nbsp;

CSK's run-chase started with Ruturaj Gaikwad's well-timed cover drive before rain played its presence felt. After a lengthy delay due to rain and wet outfield, the match resumed at 12:10 AM IST with a revised target; 171 in 15-over contest.&nbsp;Both Ruturaj and Devon Conway started off on a positive note, slamming the pacers while also attacking Rashid Khan in his first over.

Ruturaj fell for a 16-ball 26 before Conway followed suit (for a 25-ball 47) but struck some flawless boundaries prior to his fall. Noor Ahmad (2 for 17 in three&nbsp;overs) removed both the openers but Ajinkya Rahane announced his arrival with two sublime sixes.

The chase was on. While Dube struggled, Rahane got the boundaries to keep a check on the required run rate. His cameo, 13-ball 27, ended with Mohit Sharma outfoxing him with CSK in need of 54 off 25 balls. With Dube not connecting it well, he finally got going with two big sixes off Rashid and managed to keep CSK alive.&nbsp;

Rayudu, playing his last IPL match, attacked Mohit from the word go. Bringing the equation down to 22 off 14, Rayudu (8-ball 19) fell caught and bowled with Dhoni coming out to bat.&nbsp;He fell for a first-ball duck as Mohit's twin strikes dented CSK in the 13th over.

Eventually, CSK needed 13 off 6 and Mohit made it 10 off two for them before Jadeja struck a six and four to take his side to an emphatic five-wicket win (DLS method) on the last ball. Thus, the Yellow Army ended the season on top and also&nbsp;came at par with MI in terms of most IPL titles (five).

Bringing the equation down to 22 off 14, Rayudu (8-ball 19) fell caught and bowled with Dhoni coming out to bat. He fell for a first-ball duck as Mohit's twin strikes dented CSK in the 13th over. Eventually, CSK needed 13 off 6 and Mohit made it 10 off two for them before Jadeja struck a six and four to take his side to an emphatic five-wicket win (DLS method) on the last ball. Thus, the Yellow Army ended the season on top and also came at par with MI in terms of most IPL titles (five). WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. IPL 2023 Final: MS Dhoni's CSK beat defenders GT on last ball of rain-marred contest to win fifth title

In the wee hours of Tuesday (May 30),&nbsp;Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edged past defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in IPL 2023 final. Chasing 171 in 15 overs in a rain-marred contest, CSK needed 13 off six balls before the equation became 10 off the last two deliveries. Gujarat's Mohit Sharma was exceptional at the death but Ravindra Jadeja smashed two boundaries to take his side to an emphatic five-wicket win and a fifth IPL title.&nbsp;

Earlier in the contest, MS Dhoni-led Chennai opted to bowl first as the home side Gujarat posted a mammoth 214 for 4 riding on Shubman Gill's 39, Wriddhiman Saha's 54 (39) and Sai Sudharsan's 47-ball 96. At the start of CSK's run-chase, rain made its presence felt. CSK was given a revised target, 171 in 15 overs, and they completed the run-chase on the final ball courtesy of Ruturaj Gaikwad's 16-ball 26, Devon Conway's 25-ball 47, Ajinkya Rahane's 13-ball 27, Ambati Rayudu's 9-ball 18, Shivam Dube's 32* and Jadeja's 6-ball unbeaten 15.

After the game, former India head coach Ravi Shastri lauded Dhoni for his inspiring leadership all throughout IPL 2023, sharp keeping and big-hitting skills.&nbsp;

<h2>'No one can match the kind of legacy MS Dhoni is going to leave behind in IPL'</h2>

"250 IPL matches is a tribute to MS Dhoni's fitness. No one can match the kind of legacy Dhoni is going to leave behind in this tournament. He is called Thala by the whole of Chennai and Tamil Nadu. The love and adulation a guy from Jharkhand receives down south from fans of CSK is testimony to the greatness of this cricketer," Shastri told&nbsp;Star Sports.

Dhoni ended with 104 balls in 57 balls in IPL 2023, striking at&nbsp;182.45, along with ten dismissals in IPL 2023. At the post-match presentation, Dhoni opined on his IPL future and said, "Thank you very much", but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another 9 months and come back and play at least 1 more season of IPL. A lot depends on the body, I have 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side, it's not easy for me but that's a gift. The way they've shown their love and affection, I think that's something I need to do for them."

'No one can match MS Dhoni's legacy in IPL': Ravi Shastri lauds CSK skipper after Yellow Army win 5th title

The IPL 2023 final got pushed to the reserve day, that is Monday evening (May 29), after persistent rain on Sunday (May 28). MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opted to bowl first and the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) rode on Wriddhiman Saha's 39-ball 54 and Sai Sudharsan's 47-ball 96 to post a mammoth 214/4 in 20 overs. CSK's chase started with a lengthy rain break which led to a revised target, 171 off 15 overs. The Yellow Army rode on quickfire knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja's last-over heroics to win their fifth IPL title.

With 13 needed off the last six deliveries, GT's Mohit Sharma -- their best bowler who ended with 3 for 36 -- made the equation tougher for Chennai. On the last two deliveries, CSK needed ten for a win when Jadeja showed his worth, hitting a six and a four to help his side lift a memorable fifth IPL title -- joint-most along with Mumbai Indians (MI). After CSK's emphatic five-wicket win, Jadeja said he 'wants to dedicate this victory to MS Dhoni'.

<h2>'Want to dedicate this win to one of the special members of our team - MS Dhoni'</h2>

At the post-match presentation, Jadeja said, "Feeling amazing winning fifth title in front of my home crowd. They've come in big numbers to support CSK. This crowd has been amazing. They were waiting for the rain to stop till late at night. Want to say big congratulations to CSK fans. Want to dedicate this win to one of the special members of our team - MS Dhoni."

On his thinking when the equation read ten off two balls, CSK all-rounder added, "I was just thinking that I need to swing hard no matter what. Yeah, anything can happen. I was looking to hit straight because Mohit can bowl slower ones. Want to say congratulations to each and every fan of CSK. Just keep cheering the way you've been cheering."

Jadeja ended a superb run in IPL 2023 with 190 runs at 142.85 along with 20 wickets (second-most by a CSK player). He will now shift his focus to India's upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final where they take on Australia on June 07. "I had decided that if I am bowling against SKY, I won't experiment much. We had a meeting where we discussed that we mustn't try too much against Surya, it makes things easier for him. So the idea was to bowl length balls. Even if we get hit for six sixes it doesn't matter, because we felt that is the length most difficult for him to play his shots,” Mohit said on his performance against MI.

“The match wasn't over at that stage, but that wicket (Surya's wicket) meant that we were in the game. There was a big relief to take that wicket. I felt we can visualize the final only after that last wicket, we here at GT have won and lost games from baffling situations before, so it is never over till it is over." Mohit added.

<h2>What happened on Sunday?</h2>

The IPL final supposed to start at 7:30 PM IST, saw rain play a consistent role with no toss taking place on the scheduled day. There were frequent pitch inspections by the umpires as on occasions rain stopped to give relief to the fans. But at 11:00 PM IST, the IPL Twitter handle posted the postponement of the contest which will now take place on Monday.

This will also be the first time an IPL match has taken place on reserve day with still good chances that the match could be called off if rain again is the party-popper.

<h2>What were the scenarios?</h2>

The relevant teams were to compete in a Super Over and, if necessary, additional Super Overs to determine which team will win the match. A 20-over match must be completed by 11.40 PM IST. The start time for a 5-over-per-side game is 12:06 AM, before which the contest was called off.

IPL Final: Rain plays spoilsport in Ahmedabad as CSK vs GT clash moves to reserve day

On Sunday (May 28), IPL 2023 final got washed out and the game will now be played on the reserve day, on Monday (May 29). Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will lock horns in the summit clash at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad in what can be MS Dhoni's last IPL match.&nbsp;

Dhoni, who likes to keep his cards close to his chest, has not said anything about his IPL future. After taking CSK to their tenth IPL final, Dhoni opened up on his IPL future and revealed he is not thinking about it at the moment and will take a call before the next auction. At 41, he has done reasonably well in IPL 2023 -- leading from the front, keeping wickets well and hitting the big sixes -- but he has played this&nbsp;season with a knee injury.&nbsp;

Thus, IPL 2023 finale is expected to be the former Indian captain's last appearance. On Sunday, when CSK versus GT finale was delayed due to persistent rain, Kapil Dev -- India's 1983 World Cup-winning skipper -- asked Dhoni's ardent fans to let go of him.

<h2>'What more do we want from him? Do we want him to play all his life?'</h2>

"He has been playing IPL for 15 years. Why is it that we are only talking about Dhoni? He has done his work. What more do we want from him? Do we want him to play all his life? That is not going to happen. We should instead be thankful that he played for 15 years. Whether he plays next year or not, before departing he has played impressively. He may not have scored big runs but he led the team to the final and it shows what is the importance of a skipper in the game of cricket,"&nbsp;Kapil Dev told ABP News.

After CSK's 15-run win over defending champions GT, Dhoni told Harsha Bhogle, "I don't know. I have 8-9 months to decide. The small auction will be around December. So why take that headache right now? I have ample time to decide. But, I will always be there for CSK, whether it's in the playing form or sitting somewhere outside."

Dhoni will play his 250th IPL match during this year's final on Monday evening. Will this be his last appearance in the cash-rich league? Only time will tell...

On Sunday (May 28), IPL 2023 final got washed out and the game will now be played on the reserve day, on Monday (May 29). Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will lock horns in the summit clash at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad in what can be MS Dhoni's last IPL match. Dhoni, who likes to keep his cards close to his chest, has not said anything about his IPL future. After taking CSK to their tenth IPL final, Dhoni opened up on his IPL future and revealed he is not thinking about it at the moment and will take a call before the next auction. At 41, he has done reasonably well in IPL 2023 -- leading from the front, keeping wickets well and hitting the big sixes -- but he has played this season with a knee injury. 'What more do we want from him? Do we want him to play all his life?' "He has been playing IPL for 15 years. Why is it that we are only talking about Dhoni? He has done his work. What more do we want from him? Do we want him to play all his life? That is not going to happen. We should instead be thankful that he played for 15 years. Whether he plays next year or not, before departing he has played impressively. He may not have scored big runs but he led the team to the final and it shows what is the importance of a skipper in the game of cricket," Kapil Dev told ABP News.
