India beat Australia by 99 runs, via DLS method, to win the second and penultimate ODI on Sunday evening (September 24). With this win, KL Rahul-led Men in Blue have taken an unassailable lead in the three ODIs with the final game to be held on Wednesday (September 27) in Rajkot.

After India won the series, former England captain Michael Vaughan has made a big claim on Rohit Sharma's team ahead of the forthcoming CWC 2023 edition in India.

Vaughan took to X and wrote, “It’s quite clear to me... Whoever beats #India will win the WC... India’s batting line up on Indian pitches is ridiculous... Plus they have all the bowling options covered... it’s the only the pressure of the burden that could stop them.”

Talking about the penultimate ODI, Shreyas Iyer's 105 and Shubman Gill's 104 propelled India to a mammoth 399 for 5 in 50 overs; their highest score versus the Aussies in the 50-over format.

Stand-in captain Rahul (52) and Suryakumar Yadav (37-ball 72*) also made significant contributions before Australia's target was revised to 317 in 33 overs, thanks to a rain break.

The visitors never got going and only managed 217 in 28.2 overs to lose by 99 runs. R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja accounted for three scalps each whereas Prasidh Krishna also claimed two wickets at the beginning of Australia's run-chase.&nbsp;

With this win, India are set to enter the forthcoming CWC 2023 edition as the No. 1 ranked side. The last two editions have been won by the No. 1 ranked team whereas the last three titles have been clinched&nbsp;by the home team (India in 2011, Australia in 2015, England in 2019).

'Whoever beats India will win CWC '23': Vaughan's BOLD claim after KL Rahul & Co. win ODI series vs Australia

Team India thrashed Australia by 99 runs (DLS method) in the second and penultimate ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Sunday (September 24) in Mohali. Asked to bat first, India rode on centuries from Shubman Gill (104), Shreyas Iyer (105). Stand-in captain KL Rahul's 52 and Suryakumar Yadav's 72* propelled the Men in Blue to 399/5.

In reply, Australia were bundled out for 217 in 28.2 overs after a rain break revised the target to 317 in 33 overs.

With this win, India are set to enter the forthcoming ODI World Cup, at home, as the No. 1 ranked side in the format. Their preparations are going great with the middle-order looking in good form whereas regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah will also join the squad for the third ODI.

There were concerns over Shreyas Iyer -- who returned to international cricket after a long injury layoff during Asia Cup 2023 -- also booked his CWC spot with a fine 105 on Sunday evening.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra lauded Iyer for his fluent knock, laced with 11 fours and 3 sixes at 116.67.&nbsp;

"He was under pressure. But the team was convinced that Shreyas is our main player and we are going to stick with him. The way he hit a shot over covers at the start and then played those drives, he was brilliant. He was in total control."

"It was not like there were edges or catches were being dropped. There was nothing of that sort. He batted very well. For some time at the start, it seemed like Shreyas Iyer was Shubman Gill and Shubman Gill is Shreyas Iyer, who is coming back from injury,"&nbsp;Chopra&nbsp;opined.

Further, Chopra was in awe of Suryakumar Yadav following his belligerent 37-ball 72, including 6 fours and equal number of sixes at 194.59. "I am not going to call him Suryakumar Yadav, but Sixer Kumar Yadav. He hits so many sixes. Everyone was saying, go Green. He said we need to go Green near the boundary line. It was an amazing innings. He is a 360-degree player and has validated the management’s decision to back him for the World Cup. This is something to admire," added Chopra.

A lot of questions have also been raised on Surya's CWC spot. While he is the final 15, his form remained a cause of concern for Team India. With two successive fifties in the ongoing Australia series, he has also cemented his position and will look to score a big in the final ODI.

'He was in total control': Aakash Chopra lauds 'brilliant' Shreyas Iyer after his 105 vs Australia

Axar Patel has been ruled out of the third and final ODI between India and Australia to be held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). The spin-bowling all-rounder,&nbsp;who's dealing with a left quadriceps strain, missed the Asia Cup 2023 final after&nbsp;getting&nbsp;injured&nbsp;during the Super Four game versus Bangladesh. However, he is expected to return for the CWC 2023 warm-up games.&nbsp;

With Axar remaining unfit, R Ashwin's hopes of entering the CWC squad has increased further. Ashwin&nbsp;made a comeback in the ODI format after a long gap during the Australia series. His last ODI appearance was in early 2022, but the wily off-spinner has claimed four wickets in two games and thus, voices continue to grow for his late inclusion.

Nonetheless, as per a report in Cricbuzz, Axar is expected to return for the World Cup warm-up games. This could put Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee&nbsp;in a serious dilemma as they have to name the final 15-player World Cup squad by September 27.

As of now, no replacement has been announced for Axar for the third and final ODI. The final encounter will see the return of regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah whereas the likes of Shubman Gill and all-rounder Shardul Thakur have been rested.&nbsp;

<section itemprop="articleBody">
It remains to be seen if Axar retains his spot or if Ashwin will make the cut eventually. The India-Australia three&nbsp;ODIs is led by the home side after they achieved an unassailable lead with a 99-run win (DLS method) in the second game&nbsp;on Sunday (September 24) in Indore.&nbsp;

Talking about the CWC warm-up games, India will play England (on September 30 in Guwahati) and the Netherlands (on October 03 in&nbsp;Thiruvananthapuram) before their tournament opener versus Australia in October 08 in Chennai. The upcoming ICC event begins on October 05 in Ahmedabad with defending champions England taking on New Zealand.

Axar Patel ruled out of third ODI vs Australia, to return for CWC '23 warm-up ties: Report

Former India opener and 2011 World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir knows what it takes to lift the coveted trophy. Having tasted success at the top level during his decorated career, Gautam said for India to win the CWC this time, they would need to overcome the Aussie challenge for that.&nbsp;

Australia is the most successful team, having won five 50-over World Cups.&nbsp;

Although India defeated them by five wickets in the first of the three ODIs in this dress rehearsal series for the CWC, Gambhir warned the hosts of the mighty Australian side.

Speaking with Star Sports on Friday, Gambhir said despite Australia not being on the top of the rankings, discounting them in big tournaments, especially during the 50-over World Cups, would be the biggest mistake any team could make. Known to deliver on the bigger stages when it counts the most, Australia always enters the marquee events among the favourites.

Citing examples from the past, Gambhir admitted how India cashed in on the momentum and won the 50-over CWC for the first time since 1983 after beating Australia in the QFs of the 2011 edition.

"Look, I have always said this, and there is no doubt in this, that if you want to win the World Cup, then you have to beat Australia. In 2007, when we won the World Cup, we defeated Australia in the semifinal. In 2011, when we won the World Cup, we beat Australia in the quarterfinal. Australia is the strongest team in any ICC tournament. Remove the ranking, the ranking does not matter," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

<h2>Discount Aussies at your peril</h2>

Over the years, the Australian Team had several match-winners, making them the most daunting side to face in a mega event. Aware of what challenge the side from Down Under will pose, Gambhir warned India not to take them lightly, as they would remain the biggest threat during the CWC 2023.

"You can be in any position in the rankings, but Australia, when it comes to those big tournaments, the World Cups, I think Australia has got the players, they have got the self-belief, Australia has the ability to play those big moments really well.&nbsp;

“And you can see this, the two World Cups that India won, we had to beat Australia in the knockout stage two times. And the World Cups that we have lost, in 2015 we lost to Australia.”

“So, I believe that if we have to win the World Cup this year, Australia is going to be the most important game, and we start against Australia, so there is nothing better than that. So, beating Australia is very, very important," Gambhir added.

Meanwhile, the second ODI between India and Australia will take place on Sunday, September 24, in Indore.

India will also open its CWC 2023 campaign against Aussies in Chennai on October 8.

Gautam Gambhir reveals India’s ultimate challenge at CWC 2023, picks THIS team as toughest opponent

On Friday (September 22), India kick off the three-match ODI series versus Australia with the opening game at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. With regular captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli and Kuldeep Yadav rested for the opening two encounters, head coach Rahul Dravid explained the rationale behind resting the two senior pros, Rohit and Kohli, in what is India's last series before CWC 2023's commencement (on October 05) in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, on Thursday (September 21), Dravid explained, "The team wants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma fresh, both physically and mentally, for the World Cup. hence they were rested for the first two ODIs." In Rohit's absence, KL Rahul will lead&nbsp;in the first two ODIs.

In the recent past, Kohli and Rohit have been rested at regular intervals in a bid to manage their workload and keep them fit for the upcoming home ODI World Cup. The duo was part of the three-match ODI series opener versus hosts West Indies, on July 27, but promoted the middle and lower-order batters in a low-run chase before skipping the final two games altogether. They&nbsp;were part of India's Asia Cup 2023 win with both&nbsp;being among the runs. The two, along with Hardik and in-form spinner Kuldeep, will return for the third and final ODI versus Australia on Wednesday (September 27) in Rajkot.&nbsp;

After the series opener, the second and penultimate ODI will take place on Sunday (September 24) in Indore before the action shifts to Rajkot. Both sides locked horns in three ODIs, in India, early this year when the Men in Yellow won 2-1.&nbsp;

This is the final ODI series for both India and Australia before the World Cup kicks off early next month. They will meet each other in their respective openers on October 08, in Chennai.&nbsp;

India vs Australia: Rahul Dravid reveals why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are rested for first two ODIs

CWC 2023: How Team India has fared in last six editions

Jasprit Bumrah made an international comeback after 11 months during the Ireland T20Is in Dublin last month. His comeback was eagerly waited as India is gearing up for the ODI World Cup at home, which kicks off on October 05. Having suffered from back issues, Bumrah missed the entire T20 World Cup last year,&nbsp;the Bangladesh tour, Australia home series, WTC final and IPL 2023. However, he looked in fine form during the Ireland series.

Bumrah ended the Ireland T20Is with four wickets from two games to end with the Player-of-the-Series award. Following this, the 29-year-old was right on the money with the ball in the Asia Cup 2023 edition as well. He ended with four wickets in as many matches at an average of 17.75. He made the ball move in the early overs and kept it tight to account for key wickets in India's title run. Now, the speedster is involved in India's three ODIs, at home, versus Australia with the series opener on Friday (September 22) in Mohali.

Ahead of KL Rahul-led India's Mohali ODI versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co., Suresh Raina -- India's former all-rounder and 2011 World Cup winner -- heaped praise on Bumrah and feels the pacer has worked on his run-up and increased it as well. In addition, he feels Bumrah is close to returning to his very best with the CWC 2023 edition only few weeks away.&nbsp;

Speaking on JioCinema, Raina said, "He has just bowled about 5 or 6 overs till now. Rohit Sharma is with him and monitoring how effective he can be with the new ball. If we want to dismiss Australia's top order, we have Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for that. The line and speed with which he's bowling, it's swinging fully round the wicket. Even in his run-up, you can see, he has increased it a little bit, but the swing in his finishing line is praiseworthy. He's worked very hard especially with his injuries to his back and knee, after his run-up, the extra four or five yards he's getting for recovery, his speed and swing have come back. "

He added, "The quickness he's gotten with the length of his deliveries is very important. Australia's batting lineup is strong, but they'll prioritize eating up Bumrah's overs because he maintains his pace of 140-145. We can see that he has worked really hard and is enjoying it. It looks like he's about to become 'Boom Boom Bumrah' once again."

Ind vs Aus: 'Looks like he is about to...' - Suresh Raina all praise for Jasprit Bumrah ahead of 1st ODI

India will take on Australia in the series opener of the three ODIs on Friday (September 22) at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. India will be without regular captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Hardik Pandya, hence, KL Rahul will take charge of the national side for the first two games. The home side will rely on Mohammed Siraj, their in-form pacer who wreaked havoc in the Asia Cup final with 6 for 21, versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co.

Ahead of the Mohali ODI, Australian skipper Cummins was asked whether the Men in Yellow have a special plan to tackle in-form Siraj. To this, the 30-year-old had an epic one-word reply. Cummins replied with a firm "No"&nbsp;in the pre-match press conference on Thursday (September 21). Australia have faced a lot of Siraj in the recent past -- the last two editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, three ODIs and WTC final early this year -- and, hence, won't be too stressed while facing him once again. However, his fine form will keep them on their toes especially during the powerplays.

Speaking of Siraj, he ended with 10 wickets in Asia Cup 2023, second overall&nbsp;(most by an Indian), and will look to replicate his splendid form in the Australia series, which will be followed by CWC 2023 (starting on October 05).

For the visitors, they have a lot of regulars coming back -- from injury concerns -- during the forthcoming ODIs versus Team India. Cummins has not played an ODI since November 2022 whereas Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are also returning after injury layoffs. They, however, have a well-oiled unit to challenge Rohit, Virat Kohli-less India in the first two ODIs.

Australia have already announced that they will&nbsp;be without pacer&nbsp;Starc and all-rounder&nbsp;Maxwell for the series opener in Mohali.&nbsp;

Both India and Australia will meet in their CWC 2023 openers in Chennai on October 08 after the three ODIs. The World Cup kicks off on October 05 in Ahmedabad&nbsp;with defending champions England taking on New Zealand.

The squad sees the return of R Ashwin.&nbsp;The series opener will be held on Friday (September 22) in at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali.

Meanwhile, Rohit, regular vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and&nbsp;Kohli will come back for the third and final ODI. In Hardik's absence, Ravindra Jadeja has been named as Rahul's deputy.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav will be eager to make the most of their chances in the upcoming 50-over games, with main focus on the former's fitness. Meanwhile, Ashwin and Sundar will also be desperate to force the Indian team management to make some last-minute changes in the CWC 2023 squad -- which can be done by all teams until September 28 -- with Axar injured. The latter has, however, been added for the third ODI (subject to fitness).&nbsp;

Mohali and Indore will host the first two games&nbsp;on September 22 and 24,&nbsp;respectively. The series finale will take place in Rajkot&nbsp;on September 27 (Wednesday).

BCCI announces India squad for Australia ODIs: Rohit, Kohli to feature in series finale, R Ashwin returns

R Ashwin is set to make his ODI return, after a long time, during the India-Australia home series, which gets underway on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. With Axar Patel injured during the Asia Cup, it has opened the doors for Ashwin's ODI comeback in India's last series before the CWC 2023 edition at home, starting on October 05 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Not only Ashwin, Washington Sundar has also been included in the India squad for the three ODIs versus the Aussies. Ashwin last played an ODI in early 2022 during India's tour of South Africa. Kuldeep Yadav-Yuzvendra Chahal's rise since mid-2017, when Ashwin wasn't at his best in white-ball formats, along with India stressing for a left-hander down the order, with good hitting prowess, led to Ashwin being sidelined.&nbsp;However, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra feels Ashwin's fielding also kept him away from the shorter formats in recent years.&nbsp;

Mishra said while discussing India's team selection for the Australia series, on Jio Cinema, "Ashwin is undoubtedly a quality bowler and a wicket-taker, but remember this is not a 20-over game. It is of 50 overs. The only reason he has been picked is because if a spinner gets injured, then the team needs to have a wicket-taking option, which Ashwin brings. Ashwin has got an edge as an off-spin option, as India already has two left-arm spinners and a wrist-spinner in Kuldeep Yadav."

<h2>'Why he is not in the team is for&nbsp;his fielding and right-handed batting ability'</h2>

"The Indian team will be looking at how Ashwin will be bowling against Australia, and to assess if he still has the wicket-taking abilities in this format. The only reason why he is not in the team is because of his fielding and right-handed batting ability. Jadeja and Axar are both lefties. Washington is a young player and has shown wicket-taking abilities apart from being a batting option. Plus, he provides an advantage with his fielding, something which holds importance in ODIs," he further added.

Ashwin, a veteran of 113 ODIs with 151 scalps, will be desperate to prove his fitness and wicket-taking abilities versus Australia. If Axar -- who has been included for the final ODI subject to fitness -- doesn't recover in time, the wily off-spinner will have a strong chance to enter India's squad for the upcoming home World Cup.

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. R Ashwin not in Indian team because of his fielding, says Amit Mishra ahead of India-Australia ODIs

From Nicholas Pooran to Jos Buttler: Five batters with most sixes in ODIs since CWC '19

Indian&nbsp;pacer Mohammed Siraj will enter the upcoming India-Australia ODIs&nbsp;at home&nbsp;as the No. 1 bowler after the latest update in the ICC ODI Rankings&nbsp;on Wednesday (September 20). Siraj has been rewarded for his spectacular run with the ball, chipping in with regular wickets in the powerplays, including a magnificent 6 for 21 in the recently-held Asia Cup final between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo on September 17 (Sunday). In the continental tournament's summit clash, Siraj broke the back of the Lankan batting line-up. His career-best figures not only propelled India to the title but also&nbsp;took&nbsp;him to the numero uno position in the overall standings for bowlers.

Siraj had 637 points before the Asia Cup final. However, his splendid spell -- the fourth-best bowling figures by an Indian in ODIs -- sealed his spot at&nbsp;the top, propelling him from the No. 9 position. His tally now reads 694 points. He has 16 more points than Josh Hazlewood, who lost the top spot after the South Africa ODIs in the African nation.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that this is the second time Siraj has taken the top spot. Earlier, the 29-year-old held the spot in January 2023 after a fine show against Sri Lanka at home.

2. Josh Hazlewood - 678

India's Mohammed Siraj becomes No. 1 ODI bowler after 6 for 21 in Asia Cup final

A master of swing bowling, Indian seamer Deepak Chahar is ready for a national comeback after recovering from hamstring and back injuries. The right-hand pacer last appeared for India in December 2022 and has been marred by multiple injuries ever since. Even during the IPL 2023, he missed as many as six games for Chennai Super Kings with a hamstring injury.

Known for delivering peaches with the shining new ball, Deepak missed IPL 2022 because of a back injury and remained out of India’s T20 World Cup campaign in October-November.&nbsp;

Talking to PTI on the sidelines of a promotional event in India’s capital city, Chahar said he was not disappointed by his array of injuries as they were not in his hand, adding he went through a bad time last year but now is fully fit and happy with how he is bowling.&nbsp;

"A player should not get disappointed by injuries. These things are not in a player's hand. My priority right now is to remain fit and be available for the team. I will give my 100% for the team whenever I get a chance," Chahar told PTI.

"In my case, it can also be said that I was having a bad time. Last year I suffered a back injury, which is serious for a fast bowler, but now I am completely fit. I am very happy with my bowling at the moment,” the seamer added.

Having missed out on a lot of action in the blue jersey already, Chahar said he took part in the Rajasthan Premier League (RPL) recently and was training the Asian Games-bound squad in Bengaluru until Sunday.&nbsp;

"I am trying to make a comeback into the national team. I recently played in the RPL (Rajasthan Premier League) tournament. Till Sunday, I was at the National Cricket Academy. I was practising with the Indian team, which is going to China for the Asian Games," the seamer added.

<h2>‘World Cup on my wish list'</h2>

Playing a World Cup is every cricketer’s dream, and Chahar is no different. The 31-year-old pacer said his aim remains to stay fit and contribute towards the team’s success while trying his best to make it to the squad for one World Cup at least.

Banking on his accolades, Deepak said if and when given a chance, he would want to cash on it and do it for his country on the most important stage.

"A cricketer's dream is to play the World Cup and win it for the country. I will try to complete it whenever I get a chance," Deepak said.

"I have won many tournaments in my first appearance. It was my first Asia Cup when India won it in 2018. I have played five finals in the last six IPL seasons and have become champions thrice.

"I have not played the World Cup yet, and whenever I get a chance, I want to contribute to the team's victory," the Indian pacer added.

Playing World Cup still on Deepak Chahar’s wish list as seamer gets ready for India comeback

On Monday (September 18), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India's squads for the upcoming Australia ODIs, which kicks off on Friday (September 22). There were two squads announced as KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with regular captain Rohit Sharma, along with vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli and Kuldeep Yadav,&nbsp;returning for the final ODI. While R Ashwin's return has made heads turn, Yuzvendra Chahal continues to miss out and this has not been well-received by former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh.&nbsp;

Axar Patel's injury, during the just-concluded Asia Cup, led to the return of Ashwin and Washington Sundar in the ODI squad.

However, Chahal's omission has left Harbhajan Singh baffled.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said, “Yuzvendra Chahal should have been here. He has not been given an opportunity. It is beyond my understanding. Either he has fought with someone or he has said something to someone, I don't know. If we talk only about skill, his name should have been there in this team because a lot of Team India players are resting."

With his World Cup dreams looking bleak, Chahal has been busy representing Kent in County Cricket. Meanwhile, Ashwin and Sundar have a wonderful opportunity to perform well in the upcoming three ODIs and stake a claim in the CWC squad.

Talking about Axar, he is expected to recover and, hence, is&nbsp;part of the squad for the final ODI (subject to fitness).

Further, Bhajji opened up on the Australia series. He stated, "Team India have to continue the winning habit they developed in the Asia Cup. They have the ability to beat Australia as well. The team is slightly weak for the first two matches but I believe this slightly weak team can also come out on top against them."

“Australia were playing against South Africa and India were playing against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. Australia are a different team. You will have to be at your best to beat Australia because they have decent batting till No. 7 or No. 8 and they have solid hitters,” Harbhajan further added.&nbsp;

India will enter the Australia ODIs on a positive note following the Asia Cup 2023 win. Australia, on the other hand, will look to build up strongly for the forthcoming ODI World Cup -- which starts on October 5 in India -- after a 2-3 series loss to South Africa, in the African nation.&nbsp;

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. 'Either he has fought with someone or...': Harbhajan baffled by Chahal's omission from Australia ODIs

Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar opened up on India's star batter Virat Kohli during a recent interaction. Manjrekar feels that Kohli isn't one who wants leadership or power and doesn't have any scope of an unfulfilled dream when it comes to leadership after having led India for a long time across formats before Rohit Sharma's current tenure. Kohli was recently seen in action during Asia Cup 2023, where Rohit Sharma-led India beat Sri Lanka in the final by ten wickets. He will feature in the third and final ODI between India and Australia with the series opener to be held on Friday (September 22).

While talking to journalist&nbsp;Vimal Kumar on his Youtube channel, Manjrekar spoke at length about similarities between Kohli and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and opined on the former not wanting power or leadership in the current Indian setup.&nbsp;

Manjrekar said, "The one similarity between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar is that both of them enjoy playing cricket. They want to be on the field. He was not part of the team for the game against Bangladesh but was still on the field. I don't think Virat Kohli wants power or leadership." He further opined, "He just wants to play and it looks like he enjoys being a part of the team. He captained the team for a very long time, so there is no scope for an unfulfilled dream. Being with the team, travelling with players, going to the ground, and being part of winning moments are more important to him than having power."

<h2>'It will be very difficult for Kohli to reach SRT's 51 Test centuries'</h2>

Further, Manjrekar made a big claim whether Kohli can surpass Tendulkar's Test century tally and added, "Sachin Tendulkar has 51 hundreds, 17 more than what Sunil Gavaskar finished with. For a good player, accumulating runs in ODIs is comparatively easy, as bowlers don't always try to take a wicket. Tendulkar and Kohli are special because they also have a lot of Test hundreds. However, I believe it will be very difficult for Kohli to reach 51 Test centuries."

Tendulkar ended his illustrious career with over 34,000 international runs and 100 tons overall. Kohli, at present, has&nbsp;amassed 13,027 runs in 280 ODIs, 8,676 runs in 111 Tests, and 4,008 runs in 115 T20Is for India. He is just two centuries away from equalling Tendulkar's tally in ODIs (49) but remains far behind in Tests (with 29 hundreds).

Kohli will soon take part in his fourth ODI World Cup when the marquee event kicks off in India on October 05.&nbsp;

'Don't think Virat Kohli wants power or leadership': Sanjay Manjrekar opines on India's star batter

S Sreesanth, India's 2011 ODI World Cup winner, feels KL Rahul -- who returned to international cricket during Asia Cup 2023&nbsp;after a lengthy break -- should play all three ODIs versus Australia, which gets underway on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. Rahul has been named as the India captain for the first two games before regular captain Rohit Sharma will return for the series finale.&nbsp;

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Sreesanth opined that the Indian team management can opt to rest ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah -- who also made his international comeback last month after an 11-month break -- if there is a niggle.

Bumrah has been named in both the ODI squad for the Australia series -- for the opening two encounters and final ODI.

Sreesanth said, “It will be interesting to see the kind of pitches they offer to Australia in the series. But I want Bumrah to be rested if there is a niggle. Let him decide how his body is feeling. He deserves to make that decision and choose his priority. The use of fast bowlers would be crucial. They should rotate them and the fast bowlers should focus on bowling in partnerships."

He shifted focus on Rahul and added, “I would ask the likes of KL Rahul to play all the games and maintain the consistency that we spoke about. Show Australia that it will be worse for them in the World Cup. Just demoralize them and make sure we don’t lose."

The likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, regular vice-captain Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav will only feature for the third ODI whereas the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna will look to make a mark if they get a chance during the first two games.

The biggest news from the squad announcement was the return of R Ashwin.

Both Washington Sundar and Ashwin have been added for the entire series with Axar Patel being injured.

S Sreesanth, India's 2011 ODI World Cup winner, feels KL Rahul -- who returned to international cricket during Asia Cup 2023 after a lengthy break -- should play all three ODIs versus Australia, which gets underway on Friday (September 22) in Mohali.

S Sreesanth, India's 2011 ODI World Cup winner, feels KL Rahul -- who returned to international cricket during Asia Cup 2023 after a lengthy break -- should play all three ODIs versus Australia, which gets underway on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. Rahul has been named as the India captain for the first two games before regular captain Rohit Sharma will return for the series finale. They should rotate them and the fast bowlers should focus on bowling in partnerships." India vs Australia: KL Rahul should play all games and maintain consistency, says 2011 ODI WC winner

On Monday (September 18), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India's squads for the upcoming Australia home ODIs -- which gets underway on Friday (September 22).

The selection committee have finalised two squads -- one for the first two games and the series finale with KL Rahul to lead the former and Rohit Sharma to take charge of the side for the final ODI.

While R Ashwin's return made heads turn, Sanju Samson's name was missing from the two squads with Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad getting the nod ahead of him.

Following Samson's shocking omission, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan took to his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, to react to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper's non-selection.&nbsp;

"If I’m in place of Sanju Samson right now I will be very disappointed," Pathan wrote on Twitter.

Samson's has been a curious case. While he has never got a long rope in the white-ball setup, he has done reasonably well in ODIs.

In 13 ODIs, he has 390 runs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 along with three half-centuries.

Many might say that he has done much better than Suryakumar Yadav, who continues to be backed in the ODI squad, but Samson has often thrown away his wicket after getting starts or scoring a fifty.

Moreover, the Indian team management has kept faith in Surya due to his T20I heroics and hopes for him to turn the tides in the shorter format as well.&nbsp;

However, Samson will feel unlucky to have not made it to the India squad, for the Australia ODIs, with Varma and Gaikwad -- who is set to lead India in the Asian Games 2023 -- to have got the nod ahead of him.&nbsp;

Ind vs Aus ODIs: 'Would be disappointed if...' - Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan on Sanju Samson's omission

All eyes are now on the upcoming CWC 2023 edition, which gets underway in India on October 05 in Ahmedabad. All the participating teams are working hard to finalise their team combination and keep their players fit, and former cricketers and experts are busy making predictions for the marquee event.

Former Australia stumper Adam Gilchrist has joined the bandwagon and shared his semi-finalists. Gilchrist, part of Australia's 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Cup winning campaigns, feels India, Australia, England and Pakistan will make the top four.

"I think India and Pakistan could feature, Australia and England are another two teams," Gilchrist told the press in a promotional event at Ahmedabad.

Recently, a second-stringed Australian side lost a five-match ODI series (2-3) to host South Africa despite leading 2-0.

Gilchrist, however, isn't concerned and stated, "Australia will learn a lot from their efforts in South Africa when they come to India. They have got three games before the World Cup against India. So, they will have a bit more of a full-strength squad there, that might tell us a bit about where they are at."

He further opined on Adam Zampa -- who was taken to the cleaners versus the Proteas and ended with 10-0-113-0 in the fourth ODI -- and added, "Adam Zampa, in South Africa, was at the receiving end a little bit but it's different conditions out here in India with different pitches and he is a world-class spin bowler, and he has shown that particularly across T20 cricket, and now he gets his chance in the 50-over World Cup. So it's a very knowledgeable group and they are going to have to use all that experience against batting line-ups across the globe and play without fear."

Australia have now shifted their focus to the three ODIs versus hosts India, which kicks off on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. For the upcoming series, the likes of regular captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith have returned.&nbsp;

Australia squad:&nbsp;Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa

CWC 2023: Team India make the cut as former Aussie stumper Adam Gilchrist predicts semi-finalists

On Monday evening (September 18), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced two squads for India's upcoming three ODIs versus Australia at home, starting on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. In what will be India's last series before the commencement of CWC 2023, on October 05 in India, KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with Rohit Sharma to return for the series finale. However, R Ashwin's comeback has made heads turn.&nbsp;

Ashwin, who has not played an ODI since early 2022, has rejoined the 50-over setup after a long gap. Many reports claimed&nbsp;that his inclusion was on the cards ever since Rohit hinted at his comeback post Asia Cup 2023 final, where India beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets in Colombo on Sunday (September 17), following Axar Patel's injury. For the Asia Cup final, India recalled Washington Sundar as a like-for-like replacement for Axar, but now the senior pro Ashwin has also been&nbsp;included. Meanwhile, Axar is&nbsp;part of the squad only for the third ODI, subject to fitness.

During a virtual press conference, Rohit opened up on Ashwin's ODI comeback so close to the World Cup. There are now strong possibilities of him making a late entry in the WC squad, especially if Axar&nbsp;remains unfit.&nbsp;

<h2>'It is&nbsp;all in the head more than the body'</h2>

Rohit told, "With guys like Ashwin, game-time and time on the ground is not so much of a concern. Which is why we thought if he is an option for us, we need to get him in. With the kind of experience he has, for guys like him, it's all in the head more than the body. I thought getting him in could give is a chance to understand where he is at, how his body is and stuff like that."

"It's not like he has not been playing cricket for the last year or so. Yes, he hasn't played in this [ODI] format, but he played Test cricket recently in the West Indies, and if I'm not wrong, in the TNPL as well. Of course, there's no comparison but he has had some cricket there. The games against Australia will give us a chance to look at where he's at," he added.

Meanwhile, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "We're hoping Axar will be fit. Washy was already part of the squad for the final. Ashwin brings experience, so it gives us options in case there is a need at some stage for us to look at those guys."

As reported by Cricbuzz, Ashwin&nbsp;is scheduled to play a 50-over match in Chennai on Tuesday (September 19),&nbsp;in the local league of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Thus, the 37-year-old spinner is sincerely preparing himself for&nbsp;any potential scenarios ahead of CWC&nbsp;'23&nbsp;in India.

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj.

Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya have also been rested for the first two ODIs, along with Rohit, but will return for the final game.

The Australia ODIs kick&nbsp;off in Mohali on Friday, followed by the second and penultimate tie in Indore on&nbsp;September 24 (Sunday)&nbsp;and the series finale on September 27 (Wednesday).&nbsp;

Kapil Dev, India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain, has backed Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.&nbsp;to win the upcoming ODI World Cup at home, which kicks off on October 05 in Ahmedabad. On Sunday (September 17), in Colombo, Team India thrashed Sri Lanka by ten wickets -- chasing a paltry 51&nbsp;-- to win the Asia Cup 2023 edition (eighth title overall) to strengthen their preparations for CWC 2023. "We can't say right now that we are favourites, of course our team is very good. Heart says something else, mind says no we have to work very hard. I know our team, I don't know about other teams, so I would say it is unfair for me to give a blank answer," Kapil opined.

India is ready to win ODI World Cup: Kapil Dev urges Rohit & Co. to 'play passionately'

Rohit Sharma-led India thrashed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup 2023 final, on Sunday (September 17), in Colombo to win their eighth title in the continental tournament history. With this, India are preparing well for the upcoming home ODI World Cup. Before the mega event kicks off on October 5 in Ahmedabad, India, former Pakistan great Wasim Akram has named the player who can be India's main weapon in the 50-over marquee event.

<h2>'Hardik Pandya is India's main weapon'</h2>

Akram was quoted as saying to Star Sports, "He (Hardik Pandya) is their main weapon in the upcoming World Cup and India are one of the favourite teams to win it. For starters, they are playing at home and we have seen what they can do with the ball."

To back the Pakistan great's claim, Hardik does provide a good balance to the Indian side.

With him bowling very well (he ended with six scalps in Asia Cup 2023) and being India's crisis man lower down the order, his performance will be very crucial to India's chances in the 50-over World Cup.

Further, Akram opined on India's overall run in Asia Cup and how nicely the squad is building up for the World Cup at home.

“Kuldeep got wickets as well against the big sides in the Asia Cup. So, it’s a complete side. So, well done to the Indian think tank, which has been supporting these boys and making sure that they have the proper squad before the World Cup,” he added.

India will now shift focus on the three-match ODI series versus Australia at home, which begins on September 22 (Friday) in IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

After the series, India will play two warm-up games before their CWC 2023 opener, versus Australia in Chennai on October 8.&nbsp;

Not Kohli or Bumrah! Pak great Wasim Akram names who will be Rohit-led India's main weapon in CWC 2023

Following India’s greatest Asia Cup win in Colombo, Captain Rohit Sharma provided the latest update on the injury status of Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. While Iyer remained out of contention since appearing in the first game against Pakistan on September 2 due to back spasms, all-rounder Patel got ruled out of the final after he tore his quadriceps during the Bangladesh tie in Super Four.

Talking about Iyer, Rohit revealed the middle-order batter is 99% fit, but because he didn't tick off some parameters ahead of the final, he wasn’t included in the XI for the summit clash. Rohit added Iyer has recovered and will return to the side for the Australia series beginning September 22.

"I know what's happening with Shreyas. He was not available for this game [the final]. There were certain parameters that were kept for him to tick off. I think today he completed most of it. I would say 99% he should be okay as of now. But he looks good. He batted, he fielded for long hours before we came today, and he was on the ground. So he's looking good at this point in time. So I don't think it's a worry for us," Rohit said during the post-match presentation.

When asked about Axar Patel, Rohit said it's a matter of ten days or so before he attains full fitness. With September 28 kept as a deadline date for all teams to list out their final CWC 2023 squad, India has about 11 days to take a call on Patel’s future.

Rohit also confirmed for at least the first two ODIs against Australia, Axar will remain out of contention for selection.

"Axar... I'm not sure. You know he had a small tear. Looks like maybe a week or 10 days, I don't know," Rohit said.

"We just have to wait and see how that injury progresses. Because every individual is different, some guys recover quickly. I'm hoping with Axar that's the case. We'll wait and see what happens with him. I'm not too sure whether he'll be okay to play against Australia in the first two games at home. But we'll wait and see,” the Indian captain added.

Meanwhile, for the final, Washington Sundar joined the Indian Team, travelling straight from Bengaluru, where he was attending the camp for the Asian Games. Sundar was straightaway roped into the XI in place of Patel, given the history of Colombo pitch assisting the spinners.

"Honestly, that injury to Axar happened very late in the night, and then we had to call a few guys to see where they're at. Washy was available, so we had to get him to come in and play the role and perform the job for us. Luckily, he was with the squad for the Asian Games in Bangalore. He was training, he was bowling. He was cricket-fit, he was spending a lot of time on the field. So we had to get him,” Rohit added.

Rohit Sharma drops latest update on Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel as India get ready for Aussie series

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels India will need Axar Patel's batting at No. 8 in the forthcoming ODI World Cup, which kicks off in India on October 5. Axar is currently out of action&nbsp;after suffering a left quadriceps strain during the just-concluded Asia Cup 2023 edition, won by Rohit Sharma-led India on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo.

India had a good run in Asia Cup 2023. They were tested on many occasions but romped past Sri Lanka in the final to win by 10&nbsp;wickets after Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 demolished the Lankans for a mere 50 in 15.2 overs. Later, India chased down the score with 10 wickets and 263&nbsp;balls to spare.

While there were&nbsp;plenty of positives for Team India, some injury concerns remain in their preparations for CWC 2023. With Shreyas Iyer's back issues persisting, Axar's injury is also a cause of concern.

Irfan feels Axar will be vital to India's chances as his batting is needed at No. 8.

"He got hit in two or three places, so we don't know how serious it is. However, he is an extremely fit guy, which means he might recover quicker and it's not that he is a very aged player. It is extremely necessary for the Indian team to get him fit and come back. I feel India will need his batting at No. 8 because he has shown form on Sri Lankan pitches where it is slightly difficult to bat," Pathan said during a discussion on Star Sports.

Axar suffered the injury during India's close loss to Bangladesh in the Super Four stage on Friday (September 15).

During India's tricky 266-run chase versus the Bangla Tigers, Axar kept India's hopes alive -- after centurion Shubman Gill's departure (121) -- with a fine 42 before falling in the penultimate over. His batting has improved significantly, across formats, in the last one year and, hence, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will hope for his quick recovery.

Asked about Axar's&nbsp;likely replacement if the spin-bowling all-rounder fails to recover before CWC 2023's commencement, Piyush Chawla -- also part of the same discussion -- made his choice known.&nbsp;"If Axar Patel doesn't get fit, we see Washington Sundar only in his place because once he came, he straightaway played in the final of the Asia Cup. Axar is likely to remain out of India's upcoming three-match ODI series versus Australia, at home, which starts on September 22 (Friday) in Mohali.

If not all the games, he is expected to be out for the opening two encounters.

Team India will need Axar Patel's batting at No. 8 in CWC 2023, feels Irfan Pathan

India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup final on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo to clinch their eighth title in the tournament history. Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 to dismiss the islanders for 50 in 15.2 overs before chasing down the paltry total in 6.1 overs.

During their entire campaign, Team India were tested on several grounds before coming to their own in the summit clash. There were a lot of individual brilliance throughout the tournament for the Men in Blue, with the likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav doing well.

Talking about Ravindra Jadeja, the spin-bowling all-rounder also claimed six wickets but didn't do anything significant with the bat.&nbsp;

Ahead of the India-Australia home ODIs, which kicks off on Friday (September 22) in Mohali followed by CWC 2023, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined that Jadeja will have to come good with the bat in the upcoming 50-over mega event.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir -- the 2011 ODI World Cup winner -- said, "If Ishan Kishan plays at No. 5, there are question marks there as well. So Ravindra Jadeja will have to win matches with his batting ability because you might have a situation where you need 80 or 90 runs in 10 overs and the No. 6 and No. 7 batters might be playing together."

"Ravindra Jadeja has the ability but it is still debatable against top-quality bowling. The way he has contributed, no doubt he will fit in any playing XI, but India will be happy if Ravindra Jadeja is seen in good hitting form. There is a massive difference between good batting form and good hitting form," Gambhir further added.

Gambhir stressed that the ability to form partnerships down the order was something which was missing for India during Asia Cup 2023. Jadeja only managed&nbsp;25 runs in three innings in the just-concluded continental tournament. Thus, he will be looking forward to the India-Australia ODIs to get some runs under his belt before the&nbsp;World Cup gets underway.

After the Australia home ODIs, India will play two warm-up games -- on September 30 and October 03 -- before their CWC 2023 campaign gets off the mark on October 08, where they play Australia in Chennai. The World Cup commences on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Jadeja only managed 25 runs in three innings in the just-concluded continental tournament. Thus, he will be looking forward to the India-Australia ODIs to get some runs under his belt before the World Cup gets underway. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. He will have to win matches with his batting ability: Gambhir wants Jadeja the batter to stand tall in CWC '23

MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are India’s greatest match-winners in white-ball cricket. Having played together and winning two World Cups in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI), both helped India gain enormous success at the top level. An opener in the first place, Gambhir was instrumental in India&nbsp;tasting success on the bigger stages, while Dhoni led his team to all ICC white-ball trophies, becoming the first-ever captain in the game’s history to achieve this feat.&nbsp;

Speaking to the host broadcaster for the World Cup - Star Sports, Gambhir acknowledged Dhoni’s contribution to Indian cricket as a batter and a captain. Commenting on what he brought to the table with his power-hitting and brilliant game-reading ability, Gambhir said Dhoni was the first Indian keeper-batter who could change the game with his batting, unlike the previous ones, who were keepers first and then batters.

“MS (Dhoni) was the first wicketkeeper of India who could change the game with his batting. Earlier, they were keepers first and batters later, but MS was batter first and then was a wicketkeeper,” Gambhir said in a show on Star Sports. “It was a blessing for Indian cricket that in MS Dhoni, we got a wicketkeeper-batter who can win you matches from No 7 because he had that power game,” Gambhir added.

<h2>‘Dhoni sacrificed the batter in him for the team'</h2>

Dhoni’s earliest exploits in white-ball cricket earned him the reputation of a power-hitter at number six and seven, while his accolades as a captain gave him the name of Captain Cool.

Ex-India captain Sourav Ganguly promoting Dhoni to the number three slot in ODIs early in his career proved to be a masterstroke as MSD came off as a dynamite batter, hitting 148 against Pakistan in Vizag. Later, he broke his previous best record, hitting a marvellous 183 against Sri Lanka in Jaipur, batting at the same position.

Talking along the same lines, Gambhir said Dhoni sacrificed the batter in him to help his team win trophies at the international level.

“If MS would have batted at No 3, I am sure he could have broken several ODI records,” Gambhir said. “People always talk about MS Dhoni and his achievements as a captain, which is absolutely true. But I feel due to captaincy, he sacrificed the batter in him, and he could have achieved much more with his bat, which he didn’t. And this happens when you are a captain because then you put the team ahead, and you forget about yourself.”

“He started batting at No 6 or 7. If he had not been captain, he would have been India’s No. 3, and I think he could have scored more than what he has scored and could have scored more hundreds also. People always see MS with the trophies but in my opinion, he sacrificed his international runs for the team’s trophies,” the former India opener concluded.

Massive support can be seriously encouraging: WI great Viv Richards backs India ‘to do well’ in CWC 2023

Rohit Sharma has had an inspiring run in international cricket. Touted to be a big name since his early days, he took time to get going after making his India debut after the 2007 ODI World Cup. He, however, produced sporadic performances and was the fourth-slowest Indian to 2,000 ODI runs (by innings). As a result of his inconsistency, Rohit wasn't part of&nbsp;India's victorious 2011&nbsp;World Cup campaign, jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

However, Rohit has redeemed himself in style. During India's Super Four game versus Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, on Tuesday (September 12), Hitman became the second-fastest ever to enter the 10,000-run club in the 50-over format. In less than a month, the 36-year-old will also be leading India in the forthcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held entirely at home, after missing out on the 2011 edition. In addition, he has revived his Test career emphatically since his promotion as an opener in late 2019.

Thus, Rohit is hailed across the cricketing fraternity. Recently, South Africa great AB de Villiers also joined the bandwagon and lauded the Indian captain's incredible 'fighting spirit'.

<h2>'I have a lot of respect for him'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, De Villiers said, “Rohit was fourth slowest to 2000 runs, but the second fastest to 10000. How’s that for a comeback? I have a lot of respect for him. The first time I watched him play, I thought this guy has got something special to offer. What I like most about him - from a very young age, he’s always had a fighting spirit. He would not back down to anyone."

He further recalled, "I think of a Test match in Durban where he just wouldn’t stand back to Dale Steyn or Morne Morkel or any of our fast bowlers. He would make eye contact. If anyone chirped him. He would right in their face, chest out. I always liked that. At that time, I didn’t enjoy it because he was there to beat us. But thinking back, he always had this incredible fighting spirit."

De Villiers spoke on Rohit-Shubman Gill's lethal opening pair (in ODIs) as well. He added, "Very interestingly, he has had an incredible partnership with Shubman Gill. Two fighters at the crease is always a dangerous thing for the opposition. As an opening pair, they are averaging 87-odd (95) with a strike rate of 110. If they can do that for India in the World Cup."

Rohit-starrer India will face Bangladesh on Friday afternoon (September 15) in their last Super Four game of Asia Cup&nbsp;before meeting hosts Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday (September 17). Both the games will be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Now, ahead of India's last Asia Cup Super-Four tie against Bangladesh on Friday in Colombo, Iyer looked comfortable in the optional training session for selected players, indicating his much-anticipated return to the XI.

Given injuries to several top players in the lead-up to two multi-team tournaments, be it Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah, India couldn't field its best XI yet. Now, with Iyer showing no signs of discomfort while playing in the nets, chances of him returning for the Bangladesh game and the final are high and will give India an edge over their opponents.

Iyer was among the few players - Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, alongside the coaching staff that organised an additional training camp in Colombo on the eve of the India-Bangladesh match.&nbsp;

After doing jogging and stretching earlier, Iyer faced underarm and quick throwdowns in the nets before taking on the net bowlers. From hitting soothing drives to playing backfoot shots, Iyer sweated hard and made the most of this session.&nbsp;

Batting coach Vikram Rathore also applauded Iyer as he inched closer to sealing his spot in the XI with each shot in the nets.

<h2>India preparing surprise factor for crucial ties</h2>

Meanwhile, considering how well spinners have fared in Colombo, having an additional option under the sleeve would not be a bad option for any captain. Also, with India already qualifying for the Asia Cup final, they can rest some players and bring in newcomers like Tilak Varma, who can bat and offer off-spin bowling for the Bangladesh game.

Speaking on the same lines, the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who worked with Tilak since the Under-19 days, said with him bowling some spin in this additional training session, the decision makers can look into playing him at some point if required.

"We have been working with Tilak since the Under-19 days," Mhambrey said after training. "I felt that when we had gone to South Africa for Under-19 (World Cup), he had a bowling skill that we could definitely use, and so we have been working on that consistently."

"We are looking to see if he plays and manages to get a chance to bowl even one over, we'll start from there. If we can look at that and gain confidence from his bowling, the captain will have an option."

"In case we need an extra spinner given the circumstances - based on conditions or opposition batters - especially if there are left-handers and you need an offspinner, we need an option to go to. So, we are working with him on his bowling," the bowling coach added.
