Rohit Sharma-led India beat Australia in match 5 of ICC ODI World Cup 2023, on Sunday (October 8), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first, India bundled out the Aussies for 199 in 49.3 overs and chased down the score with six wickets courtesy of Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 97. At one stage, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Kohli-Rahul's 165-run fourth-wicket stand propelled the home team to a convincing victory over the five-time World Cup winners.&nbsp;

After the match, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag hailed Kohli and KL Rahul. He, in particular, praised the No. 3 batter and stated that Kohli always performs on the big stage for the Men in Blue.&nbsp;

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag stated, "Both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul played exceptionally well. Their partnership was fantastic. Both of them scored hundreds together against Pakistan as well and stitched together a great partnership. But this time, it came under a lot of pressure and was in a crunch situation."

The former cricketer further opined on Kohli, "What can I say about Virat Kohli? Jahan matter bade hote hain, wahan King Kohli khade hote hain (Virat Kohli always performs on the big stage). Virat likes to perform on the big stage. His hunger to score increases in World Cups. I was quite surprised to see him get out at 85. He likes to stay till the end. He will be quite disappointed."

Sehwag added, "A 34-year-old Virat told Rahul to play like Test cricket here. However, Kohli used to tell me the same in 2008. He would ask me to play a bit slowly, like Test cricket. That is his nature. He likes to take his time before going for big shots. This has made him such a big player. He plays according to the situation and knows that even if he takes a few balls, he can cover up later in the innings."

For India, Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 42) and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 35) led the charge with the ball and restricted the Aussies for a below-par total. During their run-chase, India were tested but would be happy to emerge out victorious. They will now face Afghanistan on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi, India.&nbsp;

Kohli always performs on the big stage - Sehwag LAUDS star batter after India's CWC '23 win over Australia

Ravindra Jadeja-starrer India thrashed Australia by six wickets in both teams' CWC 2023 opener on Sunday (Oct&nbsp;8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first, India rode on Jadeja's 3 for 28 and two wickets each from Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav as the Pat Cummins-led Aussies only managed 199 in 49.3 overs. In reply, Rohit Sharma-led India were 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) propelled the Men in Blue to an easy six-wicket win as the home side are off the mark in the showpiece event.

In a recent interaction with Dinesh Karthik and host Brian Murgatroyd -- for the latest episode of The ICC Review podcast -- Jadeja is hopeful that India will win the mega event in front of the devoted home fans and lauded them as they always turn up to cheer the side in large numbers.

On the World Cup being held in India, the 34-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder said, "It is very special because this is my first World Cup in India. The fans are very excited because our team is balanced in all areas. There is nothing that we are weak in any particular area."

'Their unwavering faith in us...': Ravindra Jadeja lauds Indian fans, hopeful to win CWC 2023 at home

On Friday (Oct&nbsp;6), Rohit Sharma-led India dealt with a major blow after reports confirmed that in-form opener Shubman Gill is down with dengue and very likely to miss India's CWC '23 opener, where they face Australia on Sunday (Oct 8) in Chennai. It is possible that Gill will also miss the following game, where India host Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). In this scenario, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is set to replace Gill at the top and open with captain Rohit.&nbsp;

On India's big potential setback with no Gill for Australia clash, former Aussie captain Aaron Finch shared a brutal assessment. He shared that while India remain in a good stead even if they play without Gill, his absence will be surely felt due to the 'fear factor'.

He said while speaking to Star Sports, "What's going to stand out in this World Cup is the depth of these squads. Most teams are going with an idea what their ideal XI is but that doesn't always go to plan. There are injuries, fatigue as it's a long tournament. Still, India would be pretty comfortable. The difference will be the fear factor Shubman Gill puts into the Australian team."

<h2>'Australia will be a little more comfortable bowling to Ishan Kishan'</h2>

Lauding the 24-year-old Gill, Finch further opined, "He is someone who Australia at times really struggle to bowl to in any format because he has no weaknesses. He is somebody who can hit your best balls. He dominates spin, left-arm pacer, right-arm pace so I think that will be the only difference."

Finch feels Ishan, on the other hand, is slightly vulnerable at the start and has technical faults, which the Aussie pacers would like to exploit on Sunday.

In this regard, he added, "Australia will be a little more comfortable bowling to Ishan Kishan in the Powerplay. Starc and Hazelwood. I would go with that selection if I have to bowl to the left-hander. The outswing to Ishan because I still think he has a few technical faults he still hasn't quite ironed out over the last while. His front foot closes up quite a bit so if he can swing it early, they can get him. Once he gets in, he moves beautifully. But just those initial balls though, he tends to get vulnerable."

No official statement has come regarding Gill's unavailability for the Australia encounter, with head coach Rahul Dravid not ruling him out yet.&nbsp;

Sources within the team have disclosed to Cricbuzz that the right-hander showed symptoms of dengue while India were in Guwahati for the warm-up games.&nbsp;

At present, the severity of his illness is being assessed, however, team sources have suggested that he is not experiencing extreme weakness&nbsp;or discomfort.

Gill puts fear into Australia, Ishan has...: Aaron Finch on India's potential setback before CWC '23 opener

England were thrashed by New Zealand by nine wickets in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition's opening game on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad. While many believed the defending champions would start with a win, the Kane Williamson-less New Zealanders put up a clinical show to chase down 283 by nine wickets with 82 balls to spare. The Kiwis rode on Devon Conway's 152 not out and Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten 123 to claim a win without breaking much sweat.&nbsp;

Tom Latham-led Black Caps won the toss and opted to bowl first. England were off to a good start and were 94 for 2 before being reduced to 188 for 5. At 221 for 5, England still had a lot of batting to come but they only managed 282/9 when they could have crossed the 300-run mark with ease. Matt Henry's 3 for 48 and two wickets each from Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips. In the run-chase, NZ lost opener Will Young for 0 (1) but nothing worked from there on for the English side as Conway-Rachin's unbeaten 273-run second-wicket stand ended the game in a flash.&nbsp;

Speaking on Cricbuzz after the match, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag removed Jos Buttler-led England from his top four following their crushing defeat in the CWC '23 opener. He said, "I had kept England in my top four, but I think I need to change my prediction now. Yes, they can lose two matches and still make it to the semi-finals. However, their net run rate has taken a massive hit. So, they will need to beat another team by a big margin."

Reviewing the match, Sehwag opined, "The wicket didn't change; New Zealand just batted better. The England batters' shot selection was poor. New Zealand, on the other hand, lost just one wicket. The two batters remained till the end because their shot selection was very good. That made a big difference. I'd say that we have already seen one upset in this World Cup, and they (NZ) also took revenge for the 2019 World Cup final."

At the post-match presentation, a dejected England captain Buttler said, "Disappointing day, outplayed by New Zealand, tough to take that defeat. One loss, still a long tournament. Lot of guys in our team have played a lot of cricket. We have beaten teams this way before and we have been at the end of such results before. I thought we were well below par, not judging by the way New Zealand batted, because we were aiming for somewhere around 330. It was a good wicket to bat and I think it got even better in the second innings. Tough to build any pressure with the start they got. We lacked being clinical with our executions. Some of those dismissals, the right shots weren't quite executed. We will keep it positive, we'll keep playing our way, can't be too defensive but we weren't clinical in shot selection and execution."

England will now play Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday (October 10).&nbsp;

'Need to change my prediction': Sehwag removes England from his top 4 after their big loss in CWC '23 opener

The world’s biggest cricket gear manufacturer, Sanspareils Greenlands (SG), has sharply ramped up production anticipating a boom in demand coinciding with the Cricket World Cup 2023, and is betting on an even bigger uplift if two-time champions and hosts India lift the coveted trophy.

The tournament began on Thursday (October 5) in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, where defending champions England played the last tournament's runners-up New Zealand at the world's largest cricket stadium, named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the small town of Meerut, an hour’s drive from the Indian capital New Delhi, workers are furiously busy cutting, shaving and chiselling wooden logs to give shape to more than 1,500 cricket bats a day at the SG factory, which supplies cricket gear to dozens of Indian and global cricket stars.

Workers cut, glue, sand and bend hundreds of bats to the exact specifications of international superstars, who rely on their decades-old techniques.

In another hall, workers are hunched over their machines cutting, sewing and shaping cricket balls to meet the scaled-up demand ahead of the World Cup.

Shop floors at family businesses like SG, which have traditionally dominated the cricket gear manufacturing for generations in India, are buzzing with activity before the start of the quadrennial tournament.

SG also manufactures pads and gloves, dispatching them around the world to be used by other brands.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-2023-new-zealand-outplay-reigning-champions-england-win-by-9-wickets-643017">Also read |&nbsp;World Cup 2023: New Zealand outplay reigning champions England, win by 9 wickets</a>

Paras Anand, a third-generation entrepreneur at SG, the firm that his grandfather started in 1931 in Lahore, says they are hoping for an encore to the 2011 World Cup when India last hosted the 50 overs tournament and won the trophy – sparking a frenzy of celebrations.

Over the years, SG has transformed into a manufacturing company that churns out every item related to the game of cricket, from English Willow and Kashmir Willow cricket bats, hand-stitched leather balls, protective equipment, cricket whites, kit bags to cricket footwear and accessories.

SG sponsors almost half the current Indian team, including the likes of K.L Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Anand said the cricket equipment market in India was worth between US$200-250 million with an annual growth ranging between 5-10 per cent but if India wins the World Cup then the market would surge past US$300 million.

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and his men head into the 50-overs showpiece event as the world's top-ranked ODI team with the hopes of a cricket-mad country of 1.4 billion on their shoulders.

Despite their huge financial muscle, India have not won a global title since lifting the 2013 Champions Trophy but their smooth run-up to the World Cup has given fans optimism that Rohit's side are set to put that right.

India won the Asia Cup last month, beating former world champions Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the tournament, and have all their frontline players available after welcoming back Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer from injury.

CWC '23: Shikhar Dhawan shares heartfelt post for Team India ahead of opener vs Australia

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed Team India to win the CWC 2023 edition, which kicked off on Thursday (October 5) with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. In the last three editions, the home side has&nbsp;won the mega title. In the previous two World Cups, the team who entered the marquee event as the No. 1 ranked side went on to win the prestigious trophy. With India hosting the event and entering the competition as the No. 1 ranked side, they have everything going for them to win their third title in tournament history.&nbsp;

"It's hard to look beyond India. They're ranked No. 1 in the world, plus history tells you that playing at home is a huge advantage. England won it four years ago, Australia in 2015 when hosting, and India themselves back in 2011. They're also just a very good side with basically all bases covered. They'll be very hard to beat," Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports.

India are No.1 ODI side, hard to look beyond them: Nasser Hussain puts his money on hosts to win CWC '23

Axar Patel's injury opened the doors for R Ashwin's comeback in the ODI setup recently. After Axar suffered an injury during Asia Cup 2023, Ashwin was recalled in the ODI setup -- for the first time since early 2022 -- during the home ODIs versus Australia in the run-up to the 50-over World Cup, which starts on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

After the three ODIs, which India won 2-1, Ashwin replaced Axar in the CWC '23 final 15 as the latter is still recovering after&nbsp;the quadriceps strain. Now, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the decision and feels Ashwin is the right choice to replace Axar.

Talking to India Today, Ganguly said, "He is an outstanding spinner. He is probably the best off-spinner in the world. And also, he is the best spinner in India. I always think that in this format specialist is very important in this format. It’s a very good decision. Maybe it is a coincidence as Axar Patel was out for injury. But I think it's a very good decision."

Ashwin was impressive in the opening two ODIs versus Australia, claiming four wickets. He will look to start the upcoming ODI World Cup with a bang as India take on the Aussies in both sides' respective openers on October 8 (Sunday) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Ashwin is a veteran of 115 ODIs and has accounted for 155 wickets. He was part of India's victorious run in the 2011 ODI World Cup, co-hosted by India. Thus, his experience will come in handy for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. as they look to replicate the 2011 success and also end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought.

Notoriously infamous for having brainfade moments in the field, the Pakistan men's cricket team had another one during a warmup game, ahead of the start of the 50-over World Cup. Playing against Australia on Tuesday (October 3) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Pakistan's&nbsp;Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Mohammad Nawaz were involved in the gaffe that is now going viral on social media platforms.&nbsp;

Notably, during the 23rd over of Australia's innings, Marnus Labuschagne, standing on the backfoot, punched the ball&nbsp;towards the deep square leg region where both&nbsp;Wasim and Nawaz converged from opposite sides. However, instead of loudly calling and alerting the other fielder to step out of the way, both engaged in ball-watching.&nbsp;

Consequently, they both saw each other at the last moment and bailed out of picking the ball. The lapse in concentration was enough for the ball to roll&nbsp;over the boundary line, leaving bowler Haris Rauf angry while other players including Shaheen Afridi, looked in disbelief.&nbsp;

As soon as the video of the incident went viral, netizens had a field day trolling the Pakistan team. Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan also lapped up the opportunity and had fun at the expense of the Pakistani cricketers.

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition gets underway on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led India will open their campaign on October 8 (Sunday) when they face Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. With the mega event less than two days away from commencement, many former and active cricketers have shared their predictions. England's Test specialist James Anderson has also joined the bandwagon and made a bold claim.&nbsp;

Anderson feels England, India, Australia and South Africa will be in the four semi-finals whereas England and India will proceed to the final, on November 19 in Ahmedabad. The 41-year-old added that he feels the defending champions England will go past India in a tight final.

Speaking to the BBC Test Match Special, Anderson stated, "The semi-finalists will be England, India, Australia and South Africa. I like how South Africa turned it around in their series against Australia. Their batting is strong and they have nice options with the ball. Pakistan will be close, as will New Zealand, but both will miss out. I can see England beating India in a tight final."

On the other hand, recently-retired England pacer Steven Finn feels England, India, Pakistan and New Zealand will end at the top four but has backed Rohit &amp; Co. to win the coveted title. Finn has backed India as the home team have won the last three editions.&nbsp;

Finn opined, "This World Cup is the most open there has been in a long time. The lack of 50-over cricket in the build-up will mean some teams will go in slightly muddled about how they approach this format. The four that will reach the semis are England, New Zealand, India and Pakistan. They have the most balanced squads."

"The last three World Cups have been won by hosts - India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England four years ago. With that in mind, India will win it again this year. They have played significantly more one-dayers than anyone else and home support will be a big advantage," he added.

England squad:&nbsp;Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition gets underway on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led India will open their campaign on October 8 (Sunday) when they face Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. With the mega event less than two days away from commencement, many former and active cricketers have shared their predictions. England's Test specialist James Anderson has also joined the bandwagon and made a bold claim. I can see England beating India in a tight final." Also Read: CWC 2023: Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Ravindra Jadeja's batting woes, points out 'little things' in his support On the other hand, recently-retired England pacer Steven Finn feels England, India, Pakistan and New Zealand will end at the top four but has backed Rohit & Co. to win the coveted title. Finn has backed India as the home team have won the last three editions. Finn opined, "This World Cup is the most open there has been in a long time. The lack of 50-over cricket in the build-up will mean some teams will go in slightly muddled about how they approach this format. The four that will reach the semis are England, New Zealand, India and Pakistan. They have the most balanced squads." "The last three World Cups have been won by hosts - India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England four years ago. With that in mind, India will win it again this year. They have played significantly more one-dayers than anyone else and home support will be a big advantage," he added. England squad: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes. India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav. 'I can see England beating India in a tight CWC 2023 final': James Anderson shares BOLD prediction

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India opened their campaign in Asian Games 2023 with a 23-run win over Nepal on Tuesday (October 3). Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden T20I ton (49-ball 100) and Rinku Singh's 15-ball 37 not out, India posted 202 for 4 and restricted the opposition to 179 for 9. With the win, India have progressed to the semi-finals. Jaiswal continued his rich form and scored his first-ever T20I century. In addition, he surpassed Shubman Gill to achieve a major Indian record.&nbsp;

Jaiswal, at the age of 21 years and 279 days, went past Gill's T20I record of being India's youngest-ever centurion in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the right-hander scored his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand early this year. The 24-year-old Gill&nbsp;had smashed an impressive 126 not out, the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Back then, Gill was 23 years old.

Talking about Jaiswal, the left-hander has been in sublime form this year. He ended IPL 2023 as the fifth-highest run-getter (with 625 runs in 14 games, including a best of 124). He carried his form during India's all-format tour of West Indies, slamming an impressive 171 on his Test debut and was among the runs in the five T20Is as well. Now, the youngster has started the Asian Games with a bang. Hence, he will be desperate to carry on with the momentum and take India to gold at the games -- where he also became the country's first-ever centurion on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jaiswal is surely ticking all the boxes at the moment and is emerging as a strong contender to open for India in the next year's T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. However, the mega event is still far away, hence, he would like to maintain consistency in the upcoming months.

India vs Nepal, Asian Games: Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks Shubman Gill's India record after maiden T20I ton

India will start their campaign in the CWC 2023 edition on October 8 (Sunday) when they face Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. While India ticked most of the boxes in the Asia Cup and home ODIs versus Australia, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. would be concerned with Ravindra Jadeja's batting struggles. Jadeja has not made a solid impression in the limited opportunities in recent times&nbsp;while batting down the order. He has not scored a half-century in the ODI format since 2020. However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar isn't concerned with Jadeja's low returns and mentions a key aspect of Jadeja.&nbsp;

In response to a question from Hindustan Times, Gavaskar stated, "Not really. With the kind of experience that he has, it's not a worry. The important thing is that he is such a fast runner between the wickets. Often, we overlook it… the fact that from the non-striker end, he helps the batter convert ones into twos. So, I think those are the little things that are important. So yeah, I am not worried after Ravindra Jadeja at all. He is a top player, a wonderful player… rockstar, like Shane Warne once said."

Batting mostly at No. 7 or 8, Jadeja has played some vital knocks down the order but has not made a significant contribution. In the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot on September 27, the 34-year-old all-rounder had a chance to get some runs under his belt and regain confidence, given India were out of the contest reeling at 249 for 6 in pursuit of a mammoth 353. However, the left-hander was seen struggling to get momentum and returned for a 36-ball 35.

The star all-rounder will be vital for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup at home. Not only with the ball, Jadeja will be needed with the bat as well -- down the order -- as Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management has often preferred batting depth.&nbsp;

The CWC 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

CWC 2023: Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Ravindra Jadeja's batting woes, points out 'little things' in his support

Rohit Sharma-led India open their campaign in CWC 2023 on October 8 (Sunday) when they face Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Ahead of India's tournament opener, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar feels the Indian captain can play the accumulator role, rather than being the aggressor at the top, in the mega event as it will help him score daddy hundreds he is known for. In the recent past, especially since taking over as the Indian captain, Rohit has often tried to go hard at the top to help India start aggressively. However, he has often paid the price for losing his wicket after getting starts.&nbsp;

Thus, Bangar feels Rohit should play the accumulator's role in the upcoming marquee event, which kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand.&nbsp;

"I feel the one of an accumulator (on what role should he play?). He is someone who has had phenomenal success as an ODI player. And many times that he has scored his hundred, it's around the 30th over. All those 3 double hundreds that we speak of and rave of so much, the acceleration came toward the last 10-12 overs where he just toys with the bowling," Bangar told Star Sports in response to a question from India Today.

Bangar further pointed out, "So a dangerous Rohit Sharma, if he gets to that 35-over mark, then India is assured of a score of around 350. If he sticks to that sort of a template&nbsp;I know he is trying to do certain other things, maybe take the game away from the bowlers, but he has got a phenomenal, fearless Shubman Gill, he can afford to play the accumulator which will guarantee that India will get a big total. Everyone wants to bat long and score those 150s and 170s. I still want to do that, but it is always nice to do something that you have not done. It only adds up to your list of batting abilities. Unless you do it, you won't know it.

''I know if I play high-risk shots, I will get out a few times but I didn't bother. This was communicated by me to the management that this is how I want to play," the former Indian opener added.&nbsp;

It will be interesting to see if Rohit takes on the bowlers from the word go in the World Cup or starts cautiously before going berserk. Having led India to the Asia Cup title last month, he will be confident leading India in the ICC event. India will look to win their third ODI World Cup and also end their ten-year-long ICC title drought.&nbsp;

CWC '23: Rohit can afford to play the accumulator role and score big hundreds, feels former India batter

Former Pakistan seamer Mohammed Amir feels Jasprit Bumrah would again hold the keys to success for his team at the World Cup 2023. Although Amir backs the ace Indian pacer to make early inroads in every match he plays in, he still feels someone else in the Indian bowling attack will be the bowler to look out for in this marquee event.&nbsp;

Once a thorn in the flesh of the Indian batting unit during his playing days, Amir is highly impressed with the rise and success of Bumrah's new-ball partner, Mohammed Siraj.&nbsp;

Hailing the newly-ranked number one bowler (Siraj) in the ODIs, Amir said no one really took&nbsp; Siraj seriously when the lanky seamer stepped into white-ball cricket. However, with time, Siraj has emerged as the most lethal weapon in that star-studded bowling unit.

"I am really impressed with him (Mohammed Siraj). No one took him seriously or rated him highly when he stepped into white-ball cricket. The way he has progressed and performed in white ball cricket is just amazing and outstanding. He is improving by leaps and bounds. He is a captain's man. He is phenomenal with both the red and white ball," Mohammed Amir told the Times of India (TOI).

While Siraj got preferred over Mohammed Shami as Bumrah's new-ball partner in the lead-up to the World Cup, the Indian seamer showcased his skill when his team needed him the most.&nbsp;

Against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final, Siraj picked his career-best figures of six for 21, including four wickets in just his second over in the first innings. Because of his spell, India dismissed Sri Lanka for a mere 50 and chased the target with ten wickets.

<h2>'Credit to RCB and Virat</h2>

Crediting India's former captain and veteran Virat Kohli behind Siraj's rise in world cricket across formats, Amir said, "I would give credit to RCB. They have played a big role in his development. Virat Kohli has played a big role in his career. In fact, Siraj has said this many times that Virat supports him a lot."

"He is doing well for India in all formats. India were totally dependent and stuck on Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah in the last 3-4 years. But now their boys and new bowlers have started chipping in, which is a brilliant sign for the team," Amir added.

The much-talked-about India-Pakistan clash will get underway in Ahmedabad on October 14.&nbsp;

Not Bumrah, but THIS Indian bowler to wreak havoc in World Cup: Mohammed Amir

Indian Men's Cricket Team is ready for its historic debut at the Asian Games 2023, with opener Ruturaj Gaikwad set to lead the second-string side in Hangzhou, China. Ahead of a potential gold medal campaign, Ruturaj opened up on picking MS Dhoni's brains while playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL but admitted having his ways of leading&nbsp;the Men in Blue in this competition.

Having shared the dressing room with MS Dhoni for a few years, Ruturaj knows a bit about Dhoni's captaincy style and how he manages to keep his cool in crunch situations.

When asked if he's going to go the Dhoni way in leading his team at the Asian Games, Ruturaj said, "I got to learn a lot of things from him (Dhoni), but every person has a different style."&nbsp;

Gaikwad added, "His style is different, his personality is different, and my personality is a bit different. I will try to be myself and not really look at what he usually does."&nbsp;

On being unique in his way of captaining India, Ruturaj said,&nbsp;"Obviously, yes, you have to pick out some things which he does really well, how he handles situations and how he handles particular players during a match."

"Obviously, these are (a) few things I really took from him, but I would like to lead the way I want to," the Indian skipper for the Asian Games said.

<h2>Great chance for the entire team</h2>

With the women's cricket team winning their maiden gold medal at the Asian Games earlier, it's time for the men's team to repeat the heroics. The coach for this assignment, VVS Laxman, also expressed his excitement over Indian players getting an opportunity to play in China and go for the top prize.

"It is a much different setup. We (would) have not even thought that we would come and play cricket in China. It is a great opportunity for the entire team. Participating in the Asian Games is a big opportunity and a matter of great pride for all these players," VVS Laxman told media in Hangzhou.

Speaking on the same lines, Ruturaj said, "Coming to the Asian Games, everyone is eager to win the gold for the country and stand up on the podium."

Great chance for the entire team With the women's cricket team winning their maiden gold medal at the Asian Games earlier, it's time for the men's team to repeat the heroics. Speaking on the same lines, Ruturaj said, "Coming to the Asian Games, everyone is eager to win the gold for the country and stand up on the podium." I picked MS Dhoni's brains, but will lead the team my way: Ruturaj Gaikwad on captaining in Asian Games

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 gets underway on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the tournament-opener, many former cricketers and experts have shared their predictions for the upcoming marquee event in India. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has also made a bold claim by stating that the World Cup could belong to India's in-form batter Shubman Gill.

Shubman has been in exceptional form in 2023, especially in the ODI format. He has so far scored 1,230 runs in 20 innings along with as many as five centuries. Overall, he is the No. 2 ranked ODI batter (after Babar Azam) and ended as the Player-of-the-Series in the recent India-Australia ODIs, at home. Thus, all eyes are on the 24-year-old as one waits to see&nbsp;how he will respond to the World Cup pressure.

Chopra believes Gill will do exceptionally well and this could be his World Cup, with at least two or three hundreds.

<h2>'Gill is a quality player and this World Cup could be his'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "This tournament could be Shubman Gill’s. In all fairness, the tournament will belong to the top three batters. The good ones will make a lot of records. Shubman Gill will score a lot of runs. I feel he will score at least two hundreds; I won’t be surprised if he hits three as well. One of them could be a daddy hundred if he doesn’t get tired. Gill is a quality player and this World Cup could be his."

“At one point of time, it seemed like he gets stuck against left-arm spin. But he showed he can take that on as well during his last hundred in the Asia Cup. It was his best ODI knock in my opinion,"&nbsp;Chopra added.

Yuvraj Singh also heaped praise on Gill during his recent interaction with The Week. He stated, "Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. The guy works hard. Since he was 19-20, his attitude has always been like that. He works four times harder than a normal guy since he was a kid. Whatever I have worked with him, he can be the player of this era."

"He (Gill) scored 91 in a Test match which India won (versus Australia in Gabba). He scored two fifties as well on his first tour to Australia which I don't know how many players have done. I am sure he will score runs in Australia, South Africa as well as England," Yuvraj opined.

The former all-rounder added, "He (Gill) is in such a stage right now that he is fearless. He can be a game-changer for India in the World Cup. He opened up the game against Pakistan and put the bowlers under pressure."

Overall, Gill has played 35 ODIs since his debut in 2019. He has&nbsp;scored a remarkable 1,917 runs with six hundreds, at an average of 66.10, with a best of 213.

CWC '23 could belong to THIS Indian batter: Aakash Chopra's bold claim, says 'he will score at least...'

With ODI World Cup just around the corner, Indian fans are hoping for another trophy in the tournament which is happing in their backyard this time. Over the years, India have had many memorable victories in the marquee event but the most iconic wins still remain the ones in 1983 and 2011 finals.

With ODI World Cup nearing, here's India's famous wins at the previous editions

Retired England seamer Stuart Broad feels if England manage to retain the World Cup, it would be a phenomenal effort, but it's the host nation India who are ahead in the race for the title. As the cricket showdown has already begun with practice matches, Broad feels England has the right team to reclaim the glory amidst putting out challenges that could hamper their hopes during this tournament.

In the lead-up to this World Cup, India won the Asia Cup 2023 final, beating Sri Lanka by ten wickets in one of the most one-sided contests in recent history. Having claimed a 2-1 over Australia in the dress rehearsal series for this marquee event, India entered the tournament as the ranked number one side in the world.

With history also suggesting that host nations have benefited during the past three World Cups, chances of India following the same path are high, provided they play their cards well in this competition. Speaking on the same lines, Broad said though he backs England to do an Australia and West Indies (by winning back-to-back World Cups), discounting India in their conditions would be hard.

“If England manage to retain their World Cup title, it will be a phenomenal effort, but my overriding feeling is that if India play their perfect tournament, they are going to be very difficult to stop,” wrote Broad in his column for the Daily Mail on Sunday.&nbsp;

“Jos Buttler certainly has the team to challenge, one with the ability to post high totals, but I just think India, as hosts and the top-ranked ODI side, will be a hugely difficult proposition to get past.

“Recent history shows you that home teams tend to prosper in 50-over World Cups: it was in India in 2011, and India won; the final was in Australia in 2015, Australia won the trophy; England won in 2019. So, on that basis alone, India would have to be huge favourites,” the seamer wrote.

<h2>Challenges, not excuses</h2>

Pointing out one big challenge that awaits England during this World Cup, Broad noted the world champions might be exhausted owing to regular travelling, as unlike other teams, they are not playing at the same venue twice.

"Contrast to England. Without sounding like I am giving them excuses, they have got a pretty tough draw, to be honest. They do not play two games in the same location, instead travelling from city to city,” Broad wrote.

“Others have the luxury of being able to book somewhere for a week and play two games. They do not. But the fact every team plays everyone else in the round-robin stage means England would be absolutely distraught not to make the semis and final,” he added.

Meanwhile, England will open its CWC campaign against Bangladesh on October 10 in Dharamsala and against India on October 29 in Lucknow.

England retaining World Cup would be phenomenal but India still ahead in race for title: Stuart Broad

Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form in 2023. The right-hander has had a dream run across formats, slamming his maiden T20I ton as well, but his form in ODIs made heads turn. The opener has so far slammed as many as five centuries this year and enters the forthcoming ODI World Cup as the No. 2 ranked batter in ICC ODI Rankings. The star opener ended as the Player-of-the-Series in India's three ODIs versus Australia, which ended on Wednesday (September 27), and will start the 50-over mega event on a positive note.

Ahead of India's CWC 2023 opener, where they lock horns with Australia on October 8 in Chennai, former Indian all-rounder and 2011 World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh has made a bold claim on his statesman. Yuvraj feels Gill has it in him to become the 'best player of this generation'.

Speaking to The Week, Yuvraj was all praise for the talented opener and said, "Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. The guy works hard. Shubman Gill has potential to become best player of this generation: Yuvraj Singh's BIG claim ahead of CWC '23

Rohit Sharma-led India Team has delivered on every step in the lead-up to the home World Cup, starting next week. Be it winning the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka or beating Australia in the three-match ODI series, India has done their best to prepare itself for the marquee event.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same, former captain and trailblazer in Indian Cricket, Sourav Ganguly, said the Men in Blue must continue playing the same kind of cricket for the next 45 days if they were to realise their dream of winning the World Cup for the third time.

On the day when India's final 15 was picked, with Ravi Ashwin replacing injured Axar Patel in the squad, Ganguly said he is elated with how the Indian Team has performed lately and wishes to see them tick off all boxes during the World Cup.

"This is going to be a big World Cup. The World Cup is a big tournament. The team has been playing very well, so it is a matter of delight. We hope that they continue to play the same good cricket for the next 45 days," Ganguly told the reporters in Kolkata.

<h2>All bases covered</h2>

Unlike how it felt in the lead-up to the Asia Cup, with several first-team players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah missing out on action due to injuries, the Men in Blue turned the tables around with star performances in the six-team tournament.

A massive win over Pakistan in the Super Four stage boosted India's confidence, which included twin hundreds from returning Rahul and Virat Kohli. The bowlers picked up the pace during the business end, with Mohammed Siraj bowling his best in the final, picking six for 21 against Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

A ten-wicket win in the Asia Cup final had India on cloud nine, and they carried the winning momentum in the ODI series against Australia by winning the first two matches. While Mohammed Shami impressed all with a five-for in Mohali, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer hitting tons made the batting line-up look daunting.

Ravi Ashwin's shrewdness in the second innings gave India some hope as to who could solve the number eight dilemma. Though India lost the final One-Dayer in Rajkot, they look set to take the World Cup by storm.

World Cup 2023: Playing good cricket for next 45 days will determine Team India's fate: Sourav Ganguly

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has backed KL Rahul to bat at No. 4 during the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup at home. Rahul has been in superb form ever since he returned to international cricket during Asia Cup 2023 following a lengthy injury layoff. He scored a brilliant 111 not out versus Pakistan in the Super Four round, followed by a vital 39 versus Sri Lanka. In the recently-concluded India-Australia ODIs, Rahul returned with 58 not out, 52 and 26. He has batted at No. 4 in four out of the last seven games and Yuvraj has backed him to bat at the crucial spot in the mega event.&nbsp;

Speaking to the Week, Yuvraj suggested that India should make Rahul bat at No. 4 and give him 15-20 games at that position. “India want K.L. Rahul to bat at No. 4 now. They have to give him 15-20 games in that position. In the Asia Cup, coming back from injury, he scored a 100. On a spinning track [in Colombo, against Sri Lanka] he scored a vital 39 runs. He is looking good right now, so they need to stick with him at No. 4," the 2011 ODI World Cup winner said.

Yuvraj highlighted the important of the No. 4 spot, which has been India's Achilles heel since the last edition of the 50-over World Cup. He added, "No. 4 is a crucial position, especially if the openers get out cheaply. No. 4 batsman needs to have the technique to leave the ball, play the short ball well, and try and build partnerships.”

The 41-year-old batted at No. 4 in 108 matches during his illustrious career and understands the importance of the position. Speaking about India's batting order, it might be tough for Rahul to bat at No. 4 as Shreyas Iyer has been looked upon to fulfill the role at the said spot. Rahul, meanwhile, will most likely bat at No. 5 throughout the upcoming ODI World Cup. He has fared brilliantly at No. 4 and 5.&nbsp;

At No. 4, Rahul averages an exceptional 60 and 50 at No. 5. Such has been his performance&nbsp;at both the positions that he effortlessly fits in the middle-order. Thus, he will be an important player for India in the upcoming showpiece event.

Rohit Sharma-led India kick off their run in CWC 2023 on October 08, versus Australia in Chennai. The tournament gets underway on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has backed KL Rahul to bat at No. 4 during the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup at home. Rahul has been in superb form ever since he returned to international cricket during Asia Cup 2023 following a lengthy injury layoff. He scored a brilliant 111 not out versus Pakistan in the Super Four round, followed by a vital 39 versus Sri Lanka. In the recently-concluded India-Australia ODIs, Rahul returned with 58 not out, 52 and 26. He has batted at No. 4 in four out of the last seven games and Yuvraj has backed him to bat at the crucial spot in the mega event. Also read: 'We need to stop...': Yuvraj Singh recalls Sachin Tendulkar's advice after SA loss during CWC '11 Yuvraj highlighted the important of the No. 4 spot, which has been India's Achilles heel since the last edition of the 50-over World Cup. He added, "No. 4 is a crucial position, especially if the openers get out cheaply. No. 4 batsman needs to have the technique to leave the ball, play the short ball well, and try and build partnerships.” The 41-year-old batted at No. 4 in 108 matches during his illustrious career and understands the importance of the position. Speaking about India's batting order, it might be tough for Rahul to bat at No. 4 as Shreyas Iyer has been looked upon to fulfill the role at the said spot. Rahul, meanwhile, will most likely bat at No. 5 throughout the upcoming ODI World Cup. He has fared brilliantly at No. 4 and 5. At No. 4, Rahul averages an exceptional 60 and 50 at No. 5. Such has been his performance at both the positions that he effortlessly fits in the middle-order. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. World Cup 2023: India need to stick with KL Rahul at No. 4, feels 2011 WC winner Yuvraj Singh

India and Pakistan will face off at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14 in the World Cup 2023. As the world would be watching another chapter in cricket's greatest rivalry unfolding, players from both teams would be under pressure to deliver on the D-day. Former Pakistan captain and legend Waqar Younis feels for the Pakistani side to overturn the records, they must weather Ahmedabad's crowd pressure, with more than 100,000 cheering for the Indian Team.

Speaking to Star Sports, Waqar said controlling the nerves would mean everything, rather crucial for Pakistan as they are the weaker team than India in their conditions.&nbsp;

These remarks have, however, come on the back of India's star performance against the arch-rivals in the Asia Cup 2023, where India not only beat Pakistan in a one-sided rain-hit clash in Colombo but also won the trophy for the record eighth time.

"As we all know, it (India vs Pakistan) will be the biggest game, mother of all the games. So, when you play in Ahmedabad, you will have to control your nerves, and not only Pakistan will be under pressure since it is a weaker team as compared to India."&nbsp;

"But India will also be under pressure because the crowd in the stadium will create pressure on both the teams," Waqar Younis told Star Sports.

Shedding light on the impact it would have on Pakistan's bowling lineup with Naseem&nbsp;Shah unavailable for the tournament, Waqar noted that India is a better team on merit and holds an advantage over Pakistan in the high-octane clash.

"However, if we judge purely based on the team's performance, India definitely will be a better team," he added.&nbsp;

"If I talk about Pakistan, they are a miss and hit this time. The absence of Naseem Shah will be a big disadvantage because Naseem and Shaheen (Afridi) used to complement each other with new ball," the former seamer added.

<h2>Bench strength keeps India ahead of all</h2>

Noting what makes the host team - India, a potent side to beat in this World Cup, Waqar said the strong bench strength keeps them ahead of everyone.&nbsp;

"If we only talk about ticking the boxes, then we will see no other team can match India right now because they have good spinners who are playing right now in the starting XI, such as Kuldeep and Jadeja. But they also have strong bench strength," Waqar added.

World Cup: Pakistan Team must weather Ahmedabad pressure, India better team on merit - Waqar Younis

Despite losing the third and final ODI, on Wednesday (September 27),&nbsp;India had a lot of positives coming out from their just-concluded three ODIs versus Australia at home. In their last series prior to the CWC 2023 edition, which starts on October 05, India tested their benched players once again and also gave two games to R Ashwin, who returned to the ODI setup after a long gap -- having played his last in early 2022 -- with Axar Patel being injured during the Asia Cup.

Ashwin replaced Axar -- who is dealing with&nbsp;a left quadriceps strain -- and played the opening two encounters to account for four wickets. He looked in good rhythm&nbsp;but suspense persists regarding his World Cup spot as no official update has come on Axar's fitness. All teams have to announce their final 15 prior to September 28 and any changes after that date would need&nbsp;approval from the ICC. With suspense continuing on Ashwin's place, head coach Rahul Dravid revealed there are 'no changes' as of now on the final 15, which was announced early this month.&nbsp;

“We have to wait for an official confirmation or a decision on that. The NCA is in touch with the selectors and Ajit (Agarkar) so I will not make any comments on that. If there is any change you will get to hear about it officially, as of now there are no changes,"&nbsp;Dravid said in a press conference after the India-Australia ODIs on Wednesday.

After the Rajkot ODI, Dravid stated that he is 'really happy' with how things have shaped up for Team India with regard to their CWC 2023 preparations. "Jasprit got a couple of games, and bowled his quota of 10 overs. Siraj suffered from a bug but got back and was able to bowl today. It was good to see how Ashwin bowled in the first two games. KL and his keeping through 50 overs, returning after 6 months, has been great. Shreyas has got some good knocks in the last couple of games. Really happy with how things are going and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the World Cup."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
Dravid added, "There are always areas you want to improve on, and we have ticked a lot of boxes. It's nice to see that the guys who have been out with injury, been away from a while, from our perspective, they've been able to get some good cricket, been able to spend time in the middle, get some runs, take some wickets, but there are always little things that you can improve."

"It's going to be a long, tough tournament. We're constantly looking to improve as a team, even when we have results going our way."

India have reached Guwahati on Thursday evening (September 28), with Ashwin in the squad, for the two warm-up games -- on September 30 (versus England) and October 03 (versus the Netherlands in Trivandrum).

The final 15 players are set to be announced by the BCCI on Thursday evening.

'As of now....': Rahul Dravid on whether R Ashwin will be part of India's CWC '23 squad

After an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three ODIs versus Australia, India entered the third and final match&nbsp;in Rajkot with an aim to inflict a clean sweep on Wednesday (September 27). However, Rohit Sharma-led India conceded the game by 66 runs in what was both the sides' last international outing before the CWC 2023 edition, which starts on October 05.

Being asked to bowl, India conceded 352 for 5 as Australia rode on Mitchell Marsh's 96, Steve Smith's 74, Marnus Labuschagne's 72 and David Warner's 56. In reply, India started off on a positive note with fifties from Rohit (81) and Virat Kohli (56) before losing their way to get all-out for 286 in 49.4 overs. After the game, India's head coach Rahul Dravid summed up India's CWC '23 preparations and feels 'really happy' with how things have been for the home side heading into the marquee event.

Ind vs Aus: Rahul Dravid 'really happy' with Team India's CWC'23 preparations despite 3rd ODI loss

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa heaped praise on Shreyas Iyer and feels the middle-order batter has it in him to lead India in the future. Iyer returned to international cricket after a long time, due to back issues, during the Asia Cup 2023 edition. However, he batted only once and missed the Super Four stage and the final, won by Rohit Sharma-led India by ten wickets, as his back issues resurfaced, putting his ODI World Cup spot in danger. Thus, the ongoing three ODIs between India and Australia, at home, became more important for Iyer to prove his form and fitness.

After being dismissed for 3 in the series opener, won by India by five wickets in Mohali, Iyer came into his own in the second and penultimate ODI, in Indore, and slammed a brilliant 105. After Iyer's third ODI century, Uthappa lavished huge praise on the talented Indian batter and backed him as a potential captain for the future. On his YouTube channel, he said,&nbsp;"Shreyas Iyer, what a relief! It's been a long time coming. We've always known that he is a high-class player. In my books, he is someone who can go on to lead India as well in the future. Shreyas is a solid player and he showed us why in that hundred against Australia."

Uthappa further stated,&nbsp;"Just the pace at which he batted, the control, and the connection. To have a couple of low scores and then have a freak kind of spasm that keeps him out of action for some time. To come back like that, especially after the injury, is not easy and takes a lot of character."

On the other hand, Uthappa -- who was part of India's terrible run in 2007 ODI World Cup and emphatic win in the inaugural T20 World Cup later that year -- also lauded in-form Indian opener Shubman Gill. Gill scored an impressive 104 in the Indore ODI. He has already slammed five hundreds in the format so far this year and will enter the forthcoming ODI World Cup, at home, as the No. 1 ranked Indian batter (second overall after Babar Azam). Uthappa feels he is the next big thing in Indian cricket and certain to take over from Virat Kohli as the upcoming batting star of the country.&nbsp;

"If you have to look at a few things leading into the World Cup, one would be Shubman Gill's form. He is in such wonderful form that you want to protect that a little bit. You want to make sure that you save all those runs for an important tournament like the World Cup. All signs lead to Shubman Gill being the next big thing in Indian cricket. It certainly seems like he is going to take over from Virat Kohli as the next big Indian batting star. Here's hoping that he continues his good form, goes into the World Cup feeling exceptionally good, and scores lots and lots of runs for India. Hopefully, he sets high standards for himself and could very well be the Man of the Series."

Gill has been rested for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, being held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). Iyer, however, will hope to replicate his recent performance in the final encounter to help India whitewash the three ODIs. India won the first two games by five wickets and 99 runs (DLS method), respectively.

'Someone who can lead India in the future as well' - Robin Uthappa's BIG claim on Shreyas Iyer

Shubman Gill has been in terrific form in 2023, especially in the ODI format. The right-hander has already slammed as many as five centuries in the 50-over format and will be entering the forthcoming ODI World Cup as the No. 1 ranked Indian batter (second overall, behind Pakistan's Babar Azam). Ahead of the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27), Gill spoke at length about Indian captain Rohit Sharma and mentioned the best quality of Hitman as a player and captain.

In an interview with Jio Cinema, Shubman hailed the 36-year-old Indian captain Rohit and stated, "He gives a lot of freedom to players to express themselves. He tells the coaches as well to let the players make their own decisions on the field and that the player should be the best judge, and that is his best quality as a player and captain."

Talking about Gill, the 24-year-old has already amassed over 1,200 ODI runs in 2023 and averages a solid&nbsp;71. On his own form, Gill said, "Yes, this year has been great for me. The preparation for the World Cup has been good. We have gotten good momentum from the Asia Cup as well. I think peaking at the right time is crucial ahead of a big tournament with so many matches."

Gill has been rested for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot. The opener will now shift his focus on India's two upcoming CWC 2023 warm-up games, on September 30 and October 03, before they kick off their World Cup campaign versus Australia on October 08 in Chennai. He tells the coaches as well to let the players make their own decisions on the field and that the player should be the best judge, and that is his best quality as a player and captain." On his own form, Gill said, "Yes, this year has been great for me. The preparation for the World Cup has been good. We have gotten good momentum from the Asia Cup as well. I think peaking at the right time is crucial ahead of a big tournament with so many matches." Gill has been rested for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot. The opener will now shift his focus on India's two upcoming CWC 2023 warm-up games, on September 30 and October 03, before they kick off their World Cup campaign versus Australia on October 08 in Chennai. Ind vs Aus: Team India star Shubman Gill mentions Rohit Sharma's best quality as player and captain

R Ashwin's ODI comeback during the ongoing Australia home series has&nbsp;made heads turn. Ever since India lost the services of Axar Patel due to injury concerns during the Asia Cup, India recalled the senior off-spinner back into the ODI setup just before the ODI World Cup at home, which kicks off on October 5. Ashwin has impressed in the opening two games, with four wickets, and former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels the wily off-spinner has sealed his World Cup spot.&nbsp;

Sharing his thoughts on the Ashwin versus Axar debate, Little Master Gavaskar said,&nbsp;"The way he has bowled in the last two matches, I think he has made the cut for the World Cup squad. If there is even a hint of doubt on Axar Patel's fitness, whether he'll be completely fit for the entire World Cup; because any injury can be a recurring one and he needs to be careful. If the team management think they can't take that chance with Axar because it is the World Cup and everyone wants their squad to be 100 percent fit; so if there are any doubts then Ashwin could make a comeback."

“He has bowled exceptionally well in the last 3-4 overs he bowled in Mohali, then the way he utilised the carrom ball in Indore. So if there are any doubts on Axar, Ashwin will come back into the team," Gavaskar added.

It is to be noted that all the participating teams have to announce their final 15 players for the CWC '23 edition before September 28 (Thursday).

Ashwin, 37, isn't part of Rohit Sharma-led India's playing XI in the third and final ODI versus Australia in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27).

Axar, the spin-bowling all-rounder, has not been completely ruled out of the World Cup. Axar, who is dealing with&nbsp;a left quadriceps strain, is expected to return for the CWC '23 warm-up games.&nbsp;

After the Australia series, India play two warm-up games -- on September 30 and October 3 respectively -- before their World Cup opener versus Australia in Chennai on October 8.

‘He has made the cut’: Sunil Gavaskar backs R Ashwin in India's CWC '23 squad, with Axar Patel unfit

During the Asia Cup 2023 edition, Virat Kohli slammed his 47th ODI hundred and took his overall century tally to 77, only 23 behind Sachin Tendulkar (with most international tons). Over the years, Kohli has broken several records achieved by Tendulkar, however, question remains if he will be able to go past the Master Blaster's century record. In this regard, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers -- who has shared the dressing room with Kohli for a long time in the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) camp -- has made a bold statement.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, De Villiers claimed, "I don't think that is his focus. That is not his main drive. He has never been all about myself kind of a guy. He wants to win World Cups for his team and be part of a successful unit in all formats of the game. He is a team player, and that's what you see on the field (with) all those emotions coming out. Especially when he is fielding, there is nothing really to gain for him, but you could see that emotion, which tells you how much it means to him to win."

At present, the 34-year-old is gearing up for India's third and final ODI versus Australia in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). He was rested for the opening two games with the ODI World Cup just a few days away.

Kohli will be desperate to make a mark for India in the forthcoming ODI World Cup at home. At 34, and just few months away from turning 35, the former Indian skipper might be playing his last 50-over World Cup. Thus, the right-hander will be adamant in making the most of the opportunities in the CWC 2023 edition.&nbsp;

'That is not his main drive': De Villiers says Kohli not 'focused' on breaking Tendulkar's century record

Virat Kohli is gearing up for the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot, on Wednesday (Sep&nbsp;28). This will be India's last international game before their CWC 2023 opener, on October 8, where they meet Australia in Chennai. The showpiece event kicks off on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Kohli will turn 35 during the forthcoming World Cup. Not much has been revealed by Kohli in terms of his future in international cricket. However, AB de Villiers -- South Africa and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legend -- feels it might be a good time for Kohli to call it quits from the 50-over format if India win the CWC 2023 edition at home.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers said, "I know he loves travelling to South Africa (for the 2027 World Cup), but it's very difficult to say. It is a long time away. Let's focus on this one first, I think that's what Virat Kohli would tell you. I think if they win this World Cup, it might not be a bad time to say, 'Thank you very much. I am maybe just going to play Test cricket for the next few years and a little bit of IPL, enjoy the last bit of my career, have enough family time, and say goodbye to everyone'."

"But he is in incredible shape and is mentally still there. He has been rested from time to time, which I think is a great move. So, I think the hunger and the fire will still be there," De Villiers added.

Kohli has had a great run at the international level. He has&nbsp;featured in 111 Tests, 280 ODIs, 115 T20Is. It will be interesting to see if Kohli steps aside from one of his most-loved formats if India win the forthcoming ODI World Cup at home.&nbsp;

Talking about India's run in CWC '23, they will open their campaign versus Australia in Chennai on October 8. Irrespective of what is in Kohli's mind with regard to his ODI future, he will be desperate to give his all and help India win their second 50-over World Cup win at home and also end their ten-year-long ICC title drought.

Virat Kohli might say 'thank you very much' if India win CWC '23: SA legend AB de Villiers' BOLD remark

India beat Australia by 99 runs (DLS method) to win the second and penultimate ODI and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three ODIs, with the final game on Wednesday (September 28) in Rajkot. R Ashwin, who returned to the ODI format after his last ODI in early 2022, has made a strong case to be included in India's final 15 for the upcoming CWC '23 edition.&nbsp;However, former Australia captain Aaron Finch has made a bold statement. Finch believes Ashwin -- who has a strong chance to replace an unfit Axar Patel from the World Cup squad -- won't make the cut and might be there as a mentor for the current group.&nbsp;

Ashwin last played an ODI in early 2022 during India's tour of South Africa. However, an injury to spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel during Asia Cup 2023, reopened the doors for Ashwin in the shorter format. In the two ODIs versus Australia, he has accounted for four wickets so far and, thus, has made a strong statement with Axar ruled out of the third and final game in Rajkot. Axar, who is dealing with a left quadriceps strain, is expected to return for the CWC '23 warm-up games. If he returns, it will be interesting to see if Ashwin remains part of India's World Cup plans.

Nonetheless, Finch doesn't think Ashwin will be part of the upcoming ICC event. Speaking on Star Sports, he said, "I think he (Ashwin) might struggle to make it to the final 15, but as somebody who has played so much cricket, I think the rest of the group that is with the Indian team for this current series against Australia, they could learn so much about big gameplay."

<h2>'Wouldn't be surprised if he's there as a mentor'</h2>

"Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it's a Test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don't see him making that last 15, unfortunately," Finch, who led Australia to T20 World Cup glory in 2021, further added.

India and Australia will lock horns in the third and final ODI in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). All CWC '23 participating teams need to announce their final 15 prior to September 28. Hence, it will be interesting to see if Axar regains fitness and what the future has in store for Ashwin in the format.&nbsp;
