Rohit Sharma-led India are on a roll in the home ODI World Cup 2023 edition. They are the only unbeaten team so far, with eight back-to-back teams and became the first-ever to book a semi-final berth. Ahead of India's last league game versus the Netherlands, on Sunday (Nov 12) in Bengaluru, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly revealed that Rohit wasn't keen to take over as the all-format skipper, after Virat Kohli, but was later on convinced by Ganguly, the then BCCI chief.

"Rohit Sharma wasn't keen (on taking up India's captaincy in all three formats). It had gone to a stage where I told him 'you'll have to say yes otherwise I'll make the announcement.' Because he is an outstanding captain. And after Virat Kohli left, he was the best man to lead India. I am not surprised by what I am seeing," Ganguly said in a chat with Kolkata TV.

Ganguly explained the reason behind Hitman's reluctance and said, "Lot of cricket; Tests, ODIs, T20, IPL – he was already a captain there, lot of pressure. So he had a lot of his plate. But nothing can be bigger than being an India captain. I am happy that he took it and it makes me glad seeing the results."

Rohit became the T20I skipper in late 2021 after Virat Kohli's resignation, which came before that year's T20 World Cup in the UAE. Later that year, Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain with Rohit succeeding him as the white-ball skipper. Ultimately, Hitman became the all-format captain in early 2022 with Kohli's resignation from the top post in Tests, which came soon after the series loss to hosts South Africa.

While Rohit's full-time captaincy has had a lot of bumps, the national side is on a roll at the moment and only some distance away from winning the home ODI WC. Under him, India reached the 2022 T20 WC semi-finals and ended as runners-up in the 2023 WTC final.&nbsp;

Ganguly also revealed that head coach Rahul Dravid was also not keen to take the top post, which became vacant after Ravi Shastri's exit in late 2021. However, he agreed for the betterment of Indian cricket.&nbsp;

"It's a lot of time on the road. He has a young family, two young kids. Plus, he played cricket all his life. So it's not easy coaching but he agreed thinking about Indian cricket and I wish he does it in the future too. A coach needs to be given time; it isn't magic for a coach to produce instant results in 3-4 months. He needs time to turn things around which he has now, second year in his tenure," Ganguly said as he hailed Dravid.

Indians continue to lead the ICC ODI ranking charts in batting and bowling, with seamer Mohammed Siraj and opener Shubman Gill taking the top spots. Siraj, who shocked the cricket world with his exploits in the Asia Cup 2023 final (against Sri Lanka) by picking his maiden six-wicket haul, is once again rewarded with the number one position in the ODI rankings for his consistency in the World Cup 2023.

Although he is not among the wickets compared to his compatriots (Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami), Siraj's impact with the new ball has kept every opposition quiet throughout the tournament thus far.&nbsp;

Speaking on bcci.tv, following the updated ICC rankings, Siraj said though he acknowledges his position on the table, such things mean nothing to him as his ultimate goal is something else.

"To be honest, I was No.1 for some time in between, then I went down. The number doesn't matter to me. The goal is that India win the World Cup. That is the team and my goal," Siraj said in a video posted by the Indian Cricket Team on social media.&nbsp;

"I hope my performance is good for India. This is all that matters," the right-arm seamer added.

Perhaps, for the first time in World Cup history, India's bowling has caused mayhem than the batting. Bumrah, Siraj, Shami and Kuldeep Yadav have wreaked havoc in each CWC game, dismissing Sri Lanka and South Africa under 100 in back-to-back matches.&nbsp;

With this pace-bowling trio bringing their A-games to the table, Siraj admits being proud of this unit, which many tipped as favourites to win the World Cup 2023.

'Proud' Siraj care less about No.1 ODI ranking, reveals ultimate goal as India prepare for CWC'23 semis

India have been on a roll in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue are on a winning spree, with eight wins on the trot, and sitting pretty at the top of the points table. They were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals and will play one of Pakistan, New Zealand and Afghanistan. The hosts have beaten the likes of five-time winners Australia, Afghanistan, arch-rivals Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka and South Africa without much discomfort and look a solid contender to win the title.

Ahead of their last league game, versus the Netherlands on Sunday (Nov 12) in Bengaluru, the Indian team is making headlines as they are the No. 1 ranked side across formats. Shubman Gill is the No. 1 ranked ODI batter whereas Mohammed Siraj tops the bowling charts. Thus, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra lauded India's recent run and feels 'they are not letting anyone come close and playing like legitimate champions'.

“The Indian team is at No. 1 in every ranking - No. 1 in ODIs, Tests and T20Is. No. 1 ODI batter - Shubman Gill, No. 1 T20I batter - Suryakumar Yadav, No. 1 ODI bowler - Mohammed Siraj, No. 1 Test all-rounder - Ravindra Jadeja, all are ours,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has hit back at former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza for his bizarre comments that recently went viral on social media. Shami took to his Instagram handle to post a message where he called out Raza and suggested him to focus on the matches, instead of inane talk.&nbsp;

Raza during one of the TV programmes alleged that&nbsp;India were being provided with a different set of balls by the ICC and BCCI which allowed them to better utilise the conditions than anyone else at the ongoing ODI World Cup 20233.

"Please have some shame. Focus on the game rather than talking rubbish. For a change, enjoy other's success," said Shami on his Instagram handle in Hindi.&nbsp;

"This is the ICC Cricket World Cup, not a local tournament. Wasim Akram explained, but still, hahahaha. You do not trust your own Wasim Akram. This person is busy praising himself," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>What did Raza say?</h2>

After Indian dismantled the Sri Lankan side on a paltry total of 55 to complete a 302-run demolition job, Raza came up with his dubious theory.&nbsp;

“The way Siraj and Shami were swinging the ball, it seemed like the ICC or the BCCI were giving them different and suspicious balls in the second innings. There needs to be an inspection done on the ball. There could also be an extra layer of coating on the ball for swing," Raza said.

Apart from questioning the balls, Raza has also alleged that BCCI was rigging the Decision Review System (DRS) to get calls in Team India's favour.&nbsp;

“Jadeja picked up five wickets and finished with career-best figures. We were talking about technology where DRS was being taken. Van de Dussen was the batter and the ball was hitting the middle stump after pitching on leg stump. How is that possible?" Raza was heard as saying.&nbsp;

However, the netizens and even former Pakistan cricketers tore into Raza for his&nbsp;ludicrous statements. Asked about Raza's absurd allegations, Pakistan great Wasim Akram said he wanted the "same thing" that Raza was having.&nbsp;&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: 'Have some shame...', Mohammed Shami blasts former Pakistan cricketer for absurd claims

Shubman Gill scripted history on Wednesday (Nov 8) by becoming the no.1 ranked ODI batter in the world, ending Pakistan captain Babar Azam's nearly two-year reign over the position.

Shubman Gill scripted history on Wednesday (Nov 8) by becoming the no.1 ranked ODI batter in the world, ending Pakistan captain Babar Azam's nearly two-year reign over the position. While Gill took over the top spot in batting, his teammate Mohammed Siraj also reclaimed the No.1 ranking among ODI bowlers in the latest ICC rankings Gill became just the fourth player from India, behind Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to join the exclusive no.1 ranked ODI batter club. Babar slipped to the second spot with a drop of six rating points to 824 after having a relatively subdued World Cup campaign so far where he has totalled only 282 runs in eight innings. Gill's rise to the top was accentuated by his solid start to the World Cup campaign where he has contributed scores of 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa over the last week and amassed a total of 219 runs from six innings in the tournament. Notably, Gill missed the early stages of the tournament due to dengue. He was also chosen as the ICC Men's Player of the Month for September. Other big gainers Gill rises to the top for the first time in his short but impressive career, while Kohli jumps three places to fourth - and within one rating point of third-placed South African Quinton de Kock - courtesy of his 543 runs at the World Cup. Meanwhile, Siraj improved two spots to take the first position. His teammates Kuldeep Yadav (up three places to fourth), Jasprit Bumrah (up three spots to eighth) and Mohammed Shami (up seven places to 10th) are all nestled within the top 10. 'I believe his USP is...': Former Indian batter all praise for Rohit Sharma as India remain unbeaten in ODI WC

‘Everything happens for a reason’ – a quote that fits well in Virat Kohli’s case. After leading India to an Under-19 World Cup win in 2008, Virat debuted against Sri Lanka in ODIs in August of the same year. Fifteen years later, he stands on the same page as veteran Sachin Tendulkar with the most ODI centuries (49*). Recalling Virat's selection at that time, former legend and chief selector, Dilip Vengsarkar shared his views.

Vengsarkar said despite the general narrative around Kohli for how he reacts while celebrating, the India great is a humble man and often acknowledges Dilip for selecting him at the right time in his career.&nbsp;

Throughout his glorious career, Virat has broken countless records and is already considered the best ODI batter.&nbsp;

“...What I also find admirable about him is his humble nature, which, again, is a hallmark of great sportspersons around the world. He may appear aggressive on the field, but he's pretty down-to-earth off it. He has always acknowledged the fact that I picked him at the right time for India,” Vengsarkar told Times of India (TOI).

Elaborating on Kohli’s early career path, wherein he didn’t start well, failing on his maiden tour and also had a poor IPL, his willingness to learn, adapt, grow and deliver pushed Vengsarkar to stick with the Delhi boy. Dilip said the way Kohli re-launched himself turned the tide for him and Indian cricket, which grew immensely with time.

“Early on in his career, in the summer of 2008, Virat had a very poor IPL. How he rejuvenated himself and re-launched his cricket, is absolutely amazing,” Dilip said.&nbsp;

“He completely sort of 're-launched' himself, worked hard on his game and his fitness, focused hard, and became an outstanding cricketer,” the ex-India batter said. &nbsp;

<h2>'He brought in the fitness culture'</h2>

Dilip said Kohli brought the ‘fitness culture’ into the Indian Cricket that changed the way the game is played or perceived in this part of the world.&nbsp;

“The expectations from him are so high, and we are so used to seeing him score a century, that when he scores a 70 or 80, it seems as if he has failed! His biggest legacy to Indian cricket is the 'culture of fitness' he has introduced into the Indian team, and the whole system,” Dilip added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in the ongoing World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli is the second-highest run-getter, with 543 runs from eight contested matches thus far.&nbsp;

“Early on in his career, in the summer of 2008, Virat had a very poor IPL. How he rejuvenated himself and re-launched his cricket, is absolutely amazing,” Dilip said. “He completely sort of 're-launched' himself, worked hard on his game and his fitness, focused hard, and became an outstanding cricketer,” the ex-India batter said. 'He brought in the fitness culture' Dilip said Kohli brought the ‘fitness culture’ into the Indian Cricket that changed the way the game is played or perceived in this part of the world. “The expectations from him are so high, and we are so used to seeing him score a century, that when he scores a 70 or 80, it seems as if he has failed! His biggest legacy to Indian cricket is the 'culture of fitness' he has introduced into the Indian team, and the whole system,” Dilip added. Meanwhile, in the ongoing World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli is the second-highest run-getter, with 543 runs from eight contested matches thus far.

Ex-selector calls Virat Kohli humble, says ace batter always acknowledges him for India call-up in 2008

India rode on Virat Kohli's 101 not out, captain Rohit Sharma's quickfire 40, Shreyas Iyer's 77, Ravindra Jadeja's 15-ball 29* and 5 for 33 to beat South Africa by 243 runs in match 37 of the home ODI World Cup on Sunday (Nov 5). Batting first, at the Eden Gardens stadium in the east Indian city of Kolkata, Rohit set the tone before Shreyas-Kohli batted with caution. Jadeja provided the final flourish whereas early breakthroughs from Mohammed Shami and Siraj pushed the Proteas on the back foot before Jadeja-Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 7) took over.&nbsp;

During his unbeaten 101, birthday boy Kohli equaled Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar with most ODI tons (49).

Nonetheless, some still slammed the Indian batter for batting slowly in the middle overs, when the ball was holding on and there was spin on offer, and going at a run-a-ball in the limited strike he got during the final 10 overs. Now, former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad has slammed Kohli's critics in style, who labelled him 'selfish'.

Prasad took to X and wrote, “Hearing funny arguments about Virat Kohli being Selfish and obsessed with personal milestone. Yes Kohli is selfish, selfish enough to follow the dream of a billion people, selfish enough to strive for excellence even after achieving so much, selfish enough to set new benchmarks, selfish enough to ensure his team wins. Yes, Kohli is selfish.”

Kohli has been in fine form in the 10-team tournament, with 543 runs (second-most), including two centuries and four fifties.

At times, his critics have taken a shot at him for trying to go for his hundred against Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand despite the game being very much in India's favour.

At the post-match presentation, Kohli opined on his knock and equalling Tendulkar. He said, "It was a big game, probably playing the toughest team in the tournament. There was a motivation to do well. Because it happened on my birthday, it becomes special and the people made it more special for me. I did wake up with that excitement that today is not just another game. "

He added, "I’m just happy that God has blessed me with that enjoyment. I’m just happy that I’m being able to do what I have done over all these years. Ind vs SA, CWC: 'Yes Virat Kohli is selfish enough to...' - Venkatesh Prasad silences Indian batter's critics

The Indian Captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first in the top-of-the-table clash against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. While the Indian Team will enter the World Cup 2023 contest with the same XI, South African skipper Temba Bavuma announced one change, bringing in Tabraiz Shamsi.

Here are the playing XIs of both teams –

India - Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj

South Africa - Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi

<h2>Batting first has more to do with team – Rohit</h2>

The crowd erupted into joy after Rohit won the toss at this favourite venue and elected to bat first.

Being the only unbeaten team thus far in this World Cup, Rohit’s call to bat first had more to do with the team doing well than anything else.&nbsp;

Although both teams have qualified for the semis, this match will be for who stays on top in this high-octane game.

“Looks like a good pitch, and honestly, it's more to do with what we want to do as a team. I think it's going to be a good game with two teams at the top of the table. I love playing here, and the Indian team loves playing at this historic ground. We're playing the same team,” Rohit said at the toss.

Much like India, South Africa also wanted to bat first, given how well they have done by batting first in this tournament.&nbsp;

The most ruthless team (having crossed 350 several times in seven contested matches), South Africa lost their only game while chasing against the Netherlands at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala.

“Looking at the wicket, we would've batted first, but it will be a nice challenge for us to chase. Chasing in an area where we need to get a lot more confidence. One change: Shamsi comes in for Coetzee,” Bavuma said at the toss.

World Cup: India bat first against South Africa at Eden Gardens; hosts unchanged, Shamsi returns to XI for SA

Right then, one month into the World Cup campaign and only two teams have made it out of the league stage so far - India and South Africa. Imposing themselves in the seven-odd games they each have played, the two teams will be locking horns on Sunday (Nov 5) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata to earn the bragging rights of finishing on top of the points table.&nbsp;

India come into the match as the only unbeaten side of the tournament while South Africa only have an aberration of a defeat against the Netherlands on their otherwise, glowing CV. While India have played an all-round game through the World Cup, South Africa have majorly relied on outmuscling the opponents in the first half of the game by batting first and putting mountainous targets.&nbsp;

That's not to say the bowling had underfired for the Proteas. Marco Jansen has been breathing fire in the powerplay overs while Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj have provided adequate help in the middle overs.&nbsp;

As for the 2011 World Cup champions,&nbsp;with Hardik Pandya out of the tournament, they will be forced to revert to their six-batters and five-bowlers formula, which, up until now, has served them well. The batting will rely on captain Rohit Sharma to provide the early impetus with Virat Kohli aiming to go big on what would be his 35th birthday.&nbsp;

<h2>Result prediction:&nbsp;</h2>

Predicting a top-of-the-table clash is never an easy proposition but given the way the Indian side has gone about its business in the tournament so far, it wouldn't be a wild call to assume that the hosts have the advantage.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the teams say?</h2>

Quizzed about the lack of a sixth bowling option on the eve of the match, Indian head coach Rahul Dravid had a tongue-in-cheek reply, suggesting that Virat Kohli will be up to roll his arms if the situation demands.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"Yes, we don't have the sixth bowling option&nbsp;but we have a wrong-footed inswinger menace whom we can back for a few overs," said Dravid.&nbsp;

"He was close to bowling in the last game with the crowd pushing him to&nbsp;do so. The response of the team and the players has&nbsp;been really good," he added.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: India take on South Africa in top-of-the-table clash - Preview and result prediction

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished Sri Lanka by 302 runs in match 33 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition, on Thursday (Nov 2) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Shubman Gill's 92, Virat Kohli's 88 and Shreyas Iyer's 82 to post a mammoth 357 for 8. In reply, the Lankans bundled out for 55 in 19.4 overs.

While the Indian seamers were on top of their game, especially with Mohammed Shami returning with 5 for 18, Kohli, Iyer and Gill also stood tall in the first innings. Kohli and Gill stitched an impressive 189-run second-wicket stand but none of them touched the 100-run mark. For Kohli, he missed out on his 49th ODI ton which would have seen him equal with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar for most tons in the format.

Sensing a lot of noise on Kohli's much-awaited 49th ODI hundred, former England captain Nasser Hussain hopes&nbsp;the star India batter&nbsp;manages to shut&nbsp;the outside noise&nbsp;in the upcoming weeks as there is a World Cup to be won. He cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar, revealing how much pressure the former batter was feeling when he was on the verge of getting to his 100th international century.

Hussain said on Star Sports, "Anything I would say about it&nbsp;winning the World Cup is the most important thing. He will get the 49, he will get the 50th. He will probably get a 100 international hundreds, he is that good. But the more important thing is winning the World Cup. India must not build it up to be about his 49th."

He further opined, "I remember Sachin had spoken about it, the only time he really felt the enormity of who he was when going from 99 to 100, the person in the room service before he hung up asked him 'are you going to get your 100th today?.

"He hid himself from the noise, he shut out the noise and the only time he could hear the noise was from 99 to 100. So, I just hope that Virat can hide away from that noise, just for a few weeks longer," Hussain added.

During the 2011 ODI World Cup, at home, Tendulkar reached his 99th international ton with a majestic 111 in MS Dhoni-led India's group stage clash versus South Africa, in Nagpur. However, he took over an year to get to the elusive 100th international century due to the excessive pressure mounted&nbsp;by media and fans. CWC 2023: 'Hope Virat Kohli can shut out noise around his 49th ODI ton...' - Former England captain

India raced past Sri Lanka by 302 runs in match 33 of the ODI World Cup, on Thursday (Nov 2) in Mumbai&nbsp;to book a place in the semi-finals. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Shubman Gill's 92, Virat Kohli's 88 and Shreyas Iyer's 82 to post a mammoth 357 for 8. In reply, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 55 as Mohammed Shami (5 for 18) and Mohammed Siraj (3 for 16) wreaked havoc with the ball.

The swing and seam rattled the Sri Lankan batters as India pacers made light work of the Islanders at a jam-packed Wankhede Stadium. However, their brilliant bowling display wasn't well received by former Pakistani player Hasan&nbsp;Raza, who feels the International Cricket Council (ICC) is helping India by giving them a&nbsp;different set of balls.

“The balls given to Indian bowlers should be checked. They are getting more swing and seam. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are bowling like Allan Donald and Makhaya Ntini. Even Mathews was surprised to see the amount of swing Shami’s ball got in Mumbai. Either ICC is helping them, or BCCI is coming to help their bowlers. There could be an involvement of the third umpire as well,” Hasan said while speaking on a Pakistani TV show.

Now, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has reacted to Hasan's absurd claims. "Is it a serious cricket show? If not, please mention ‘satire’ ‘comedy’ in English somewhere. It&nbsp;might be written in Urdu already but unfortunately, I can’t read/understand it," Chopra tweeted.

ODI WC: Former India opener BLASTS Pakistani show for RIDICULOUS claims on Team India after SL tie

Indian opener Shubman Gill has been in superb form in 2023. Even in the ODI World Cup, he missed the opening two games but has looked in good touch despite not getting a big score. On Thursday (Nov 2), Gill scored his second fifty of the 10-team tournament when India locked horns with Sri Lanka at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in match 33. Being asked to bat first, India lost captain Rohit Sharma (4) early but Gill and Virat Kohli (88) revived the innings with a mammoth 189-run second-wicket stand and posted 357 for 8, with Shreyas Iyer also chipping in with an attacking 82. Gill top-scored with a fine 92 and surpassed 1,400 runs in the ODI format in 2023.

'We strive to keep improving and not get carried away': Rohit Sharma on India's unbeaten run in ODI WC

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has hailed Rohit Sharma's sublime 87 in India's 100-run win over England in match 29 of the ODI World Cup in Lucknow on Oct 29. Asked to bat first, India didn't get off to a great start and were soon reduced to 40 for 3 but captain Rohit stitched an impressive 91-run fourth-wicket stand with KL Rahul (39) before getting out for a classy 87 as India managed a below-par 229 for 9 with Suryakumar Yadav (49) also chipping in with the bat. In reply, England were dismissed for 129 as Mohammed Shami (4 for 22) and Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 32) wreaked havoc with the ball.

Gavaskar has lauded Rohit for playing a top knock amid a difficult situation to take India past the 200-run mark and believes his knock was worth more than a hundred. "Rohit Sharma's innings against England was a captain's innings worth more than a hundred as he tailored his approach according to the needs of the situation," Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Khaleej Times.

Rohit has been India's top run-getter in the ten-team competition. He has 402 runs (fourth-most) including a best of 131, versus Afghanistan, and will look to continue his good run going forward.&nbsp;

India have been on a roll in the home ODI World Cup. They have won six games on the trot and Gavaskar wants the hosts to continue their dominance and not loosen up. "India must not loosen up and keep the winning tempo going as it sends a message to the opposition that they are determined to win the trophy at home," Gavaskar added.

World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma's 87 vs England was worth more than hundred, feels Sunil Gavaskar

England captain Jos Buttler was highly disappointed after his team squandered a golden opportunity to win the World Cup game against India after restricting the hosts to a below-par total of 229. England lost the match by 100 runs as the batting lineup folded for a timid total of 129.&nbsp;

Speaking at the post-match ceremony, Buttler reflected on the poor performance by the defending champions and said the batters did not put their hands up today.

"Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, chasing 230 seeing how well we bowled as well, we should have fancied ourselves.&nbsp;Same old story," said Buttler.&nbsp;

"I wasn't sure if the dew would come or not. Just the gut feel said that we had to chase. I think we've bowled this tournament to create pressure for wickets. If we were given 230 at the halfway stage we'd have been happy with that," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Were 20 runs short: Rohit Sharma&nbsp;</h2>

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant 87-run inning and astute captaincy. With the pitch playing a bit slow, the Indian skipper curbed his natural game and soaked in the pressure when the team lost early wickets.&nbsp;

"It was a challenging pitch, it got better to bat on as the game progressed, but happy with that win. I have got experience, it's not only about going out there and playing my shots (got to assess the conditions and situation) as well. It was necessary for me to create that partnership with KL," said Sharma.&nbsp;

Sharma added that India were 20 runs short despite the win as a few players, including him, threw their wickets at the end.&nbsp;

"A couple of guys threw it away at the end including myself. All I was thinking of was to be positive and put away the ball in my area. But yeah we were a few runs short. It's not something you see every day when you have a total like that."&nbsp;

With the win, India have climbed to the top of the points table and have one foot in the knockouts. Meanwhile, England continue to languish at the bottom and have all but crashed out of the tournament.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: 'Same old story...', Captain Jos Buttler seethes after England fumble in chase against India

India faced England in match 29 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Sunday (Oct 29) in Lucknow. After five back-to-back wins, Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with the defending champions in a bid to regain the top spot in the points table with their sixth victory on the trot. Being asked to bat first, the home side were in a spot of bother at 40 for 3, further reduced to 164 for 5, before posting 229 for 9. In the second innings, Rohit &amp; Co. rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 3 for 32, Kuldeep Yadav's 2 for 24 and Mohammed Shami's 4 for 22 to dismiss the 2019 winners for a paltry 129 in 34.5 overs.&nbsp;

With another convincing win, India have regained the top spot in the points table -- moving past South Africa -- and remain the only unbeaten side in the 10-team tournament. While India have one foot in the semi-finals, here is how the home side can still NOT qualify for the next round:

India have been the best side in the tournament but Sri Lanka and Afghanistan can spoil their party. Both the Asian sides have four points from five games. This means one or both of them can match India's current tally (12 points) if India lose their remaining three games by a convincing margin. Thus, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka -- both of whom have locked horns in Pune on Monday (Oct 30) in match 30 -- will need to win all their four games at any cost.&nbsp;

At the same time, just one more point -- or if the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka clash is washed out -- will secure a place for India in the top four. They will now gear up to lock horns with Sri Lanka in their next outing, i.e. match 33 of the mega event which will be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.&nbsp;

After the England win, captain Rohit said at the post-match presentation, "This was the game, a lot of character&nbsp;in the squad. When the times were tough, all our experienced players stood up at the right time and got the game for us."

ODI World Cup 2023: India can still MISS out on SEMI-FINAL berth despite big win over England - Here's how

The Indian Team is bashing everyone left, right and centre in this World Cup 2023. With the win over England in Lucknow, they have almost sealed their place in the semis, but India still have&nbsp;Hardik Pandya’s injury to worry about. The ace all-rounder tore his ligament in his left knee during the Bangladesh game and has been out since. Although his return date remains uncertain, the team is said to receive an update in a couple of days.

Following India’s 100-run win over England the other night, the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey informed everyone about Pandya’s injury status, saying the management is in touch with Hardik and the staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), expecting an update in a couple of days.

"The medical team is looking at that and are very much in touch with Hardik and the NCA [National Cricket Academy] as well," Paras Mhambrey told media following India’s win over England. "We're hoping to get an update in a couple of days. But we'll see."

With Pandya ruled out with an ankle injury, India made two changes to their XI for the then-next game against New Zealand, bringing in Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami while sitting out Shardul Thakur. That combination has done wonders for the team, with Shami picking nine wickets in the two contested matches (five vs NZ and four against England).&nbsp;

Suryakumar got out cheaply against New Zealand but scored a gritty 49 against England on the two-paced pitch in Lucknow, helping India put a fighting total on board.&nbsp;

Courtesy of a collective bowling show, India defended a mediocre target of 230, wrapping up England for 129. With this, India now have one foot inside the World Cup semis.

<h2>Who goes out when Hardik returns?</h2>

No captain likes tinkering with the winning combination, but given what value Pandya adds to the team, his inclusion is certain when declared fit. So, who goes out when Hardik returns to the side?

Considering how well Shami has bowled, India will go ahead with the same attack in the remaining matches, leaving either Suryakumar or Shreyas Iyer to choose from.&nbsp;

Surya was among the runs and showed composure during the England outing, while Iyer got exposed playing the pull shot and getting out in the same manner. Even though SKY’s knock looked convincing, considering the backing Iyer got in the lead-up to the World Cup, he is likely to get an extended run.

So, if Hardik returns to the playing XI, he will likely replace Suryakumar Yadav.&nbsp;

That combination has done wonders for the team, with Shami picking nine wickets in the two contested matches (five vs NZ and four against England). Suryakumar got out cheaply against New Zealand but scored a gritty 49 against England on the two-paced pitch in Lucknow, helping India put a fighting total on board. Courtesy of a collective bowling show, India defended a mediocre target of 230, wrapping up England for 129. With this, India now have one foot inside the World Cup semis. Who goes out when Hardik returns? No captain likes tinkering with the winning combination, but given what value Pandya adds to the team, his inclusion is certain when declared fit. So, who goes out when Hardik returns to the side? Considering how well Shami has bowled, India will go ahead with the same attack in the remaining matches, leaving either Suryakumar or Shreyas Iyer to choose from. Surya was among the runs and showed composure during the England outing, while Iyer got exposed playing the pull shot and getting out in the same manner. Even though SKY’s knock looked convincing, considering the backing Iyer got in the lead-up to the World Cup, he is likely to get an extended run. So, if Hardik returns to the playing XI, he will likely replace Suryakumar Yadav. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. World Cup: With one foot in semis, India seek update on Hardik Pandya’s injury

The ‘Sultan of swing’ Wasim Akram cannot stop praising ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah following India’s statement-making win over England in Lucknow in World Cup 2023. While Mohammed Shami starred with the ball, picking four wickets for 22 in seven overs, it was Bumrah’s new-ball spell that set the tone for India as they thrashed England by 100 runs to go on top of the points table.

Talking on a TV show in Pakistan, Akram hailed India’s premier bowler, Bumrah, the best of this generation, even going to the extent of calling him someone with better control of the new ball than himself.

“He is the best in the world right now. Top of the ladder! The control, the pace, the variations, just a complete bowler. A treat to watch,” Akram told&nbsp;A Sports.&nbsp;

“With the new ball, to get this kind of movement on this kind of pitch … pace, carry, follow-through… you name it he’s a complete bowler,” Akram added.

Chasing a mediocre total of 230, England reached 30 in no time, with both openers finding gaps at will. Just when it looked like England would walk away with their second win in this tournament, Bumrah picked up two wickets in successive balls, removing David Malan and Joe Root.&nbsp;

That was the beginning of the end of the England innings, as they got reduced to 52 for five soon after. Shami removed Moeen Ali, while Kuldeep Yadav trapped Liam Livingstone in the middle to end England’s hopes of making any comeback in the match.

<h2>Special Bumrah amazes Akram</h2>

Besides delivering perfect Yorkers, Bumrah is as lethal with the new ball as any in modern-day cricket. His ability to make the new ball talk both ways, mostly while bowling from around the wicket to the left-handers, makes it almost impossible for them to play him, let alone attack.&nbsp;

Comparing himself to Bumrah, Akram noted, even he didn’t have the same control as Bumrah.

“When I used to bowl outswingers like that to right-handed batters with the new ball, sometimes I couldn’t control the ball also. But Bumrah definitely has better control with the new ball than myself,” Wasim said with a smile.

“The length where he bowls with the new ball is what creates uncertainty for the batters,” he added.

With the win in Lucknow, India have assured themselves of a place in the semis, while England, with five losses in six matches, is ruled out of the race for the semis.

World Cup - He has better control with new ball than myself: Wasim Akram lauds ‘best in the world’ Bumrah

A collective bowling effort from England restricted the high-flying Indian Team to 229 for nine in 50 overs in Lucknow. David Willey was the star for the defending champions, picking two wickets, while Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid also returned with two wickets each. For India, captain Rohit Sharma stood out, hitting a gritty 87 off 101 balls, and Suryakumar Yadav impressed everyone with his fighting 49.

England need 230 runs to win this match.

England won the toss and sent India out to bat first for the first time in this tournament. Willey and Woakes kept it tight with the new ball, as Woakes removed Shubman Gill, clean bowled on nine. A few balls later, Willey removed veteran Virat Kohli on a duck and reduced India to 27 for two inside eight overs.

In-form Rohit showed intent and, alongside Shreyas Iyer, tried stitching a stand; however, a rising delivery from Woakes caught Iyer off-guard, as he mistimed one to the mid-on area.

<h2>India bat first for the first time in CWC 2023</h2>

Having successfully chased five totals in as many contested games in this World Cup edition, India will be batting first for the first time. Admitting to be doing the same had he won the toss, India's captain said,

“We wanted to bat first; we have had a good time batting second. Looks like a good pitch, it's a new surface which has been relayed here. It has played well for the 100 overs.&nbsp;

“I mean it's quite important to think like that, but it's important to get the two points. We have played some good cricket. It's always good to have a break. It's nice to come back here and get back into business. We are playing the same team we played in the last game,” the India captain added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a win in Lucknow will seal India’s spot in the CWC semis, becoming the first team to do so, whereas, England would like to spoil their party after being pressed against the wall with four losses thus far.

The underperforming England side will aim to turn the tables around and push for an unlikely case of reaching the semis.&nbsp;

At the toss, captain Buttler said, “We are going to bowl first today.”&nbsp;

“Not anything in particular, it's a gut decision. It's a great occasion, and hopefully, today we bring our best. Today, we want to put up a good show. We haven't done ourselves justice, today we want to put up a show and play for pride. Playing in front of a full crowd and against India, it's a great occasion. We are going with the same team,” Buttler added.

World Cup 2023: England win toss and bowl first in Lucknow; both teams unchanged

The two former winners, India and England, will lock horns in the marquee World Cup 2023 clash in Lucknow on Super Sunday (Oct 29). Sitting on the contrasting ends of the points table, with India in the top two with five wins in as many matches, while England in the bottom half with just one win in five games, both teams have a lot to play for as the fight for semis spots continues. Here is the match preview and result prediction of the India vs England World Cup 2023 match.

<h2>Unbeaten India ready for England challenge</h2>

Given how the Men in Blue are performing on this World Cup stage, they don’t look like doing anything wrong. Across all departments, be it batting, bowling and fielding, this Indian unit is getting better with each game. Although there are a few flaws that need to be ironed out, India will walk into this contest as absolute favourites.

Having won their last match against New Zealand by four wickets in Dharamsala, courtesy of Mohammed Shami’s five-for and Virat Kohli’s match-winning 95, India will likely go ahead with the winning combination.

In Hardik Pandya’s absence, the management is reported to have tried several options as backup bowlers in the training sessions earlier, with Kohli, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav being the ones.&nbsp;

<h3>England to play for&nbsp;pride</h3>

An unlike England performance from the defending champions has them on the mat in this tournament thus far. Apart from beating Bangladesh in a one-sided contest earlier, England failed to click as a unit against all other teams.&nbsp;

From losing the curtain-raiser against the Kiwis by eight wickets to going down against under-performing Sri Lanka in their last match, this England side has looked out of sorts.

With nothing seeming to work in tandem for England, it’d be interesting to see what approach they would deploy against India in this marquee tie.&nbsp;

<h3>Result Prediction</h3>

Although England is hurt and their chances of sealing the semis spot look bleak, given their standings on the points table, they can still, on the day, cause upset and hand India its first defeat of this World Cup.&nbsp;

Predicted XIs of both teams –

India - Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj

World Cup 2023, India vs England: Match preview and result prediction

Former India captain MS Dhoni announcing his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020, broke a billion hearts. While the country was celebrating Independence Day, Dhoni’s shock retirement call paused time and had the world talking. Speaking at an event held in Bengaluru, India’s greatest ODI skipper revealed under what circumstances he decided to retire from international cricket.

After losing the 2019 World Cup semifinal to New Zealand in Manchester, England, India got knocked out. It was then that MS Dhoni, in his mind and heart, decided to hang his boots from international cricket for good. Although Dhoni announced it officially around 13 months after the event, MS admitted he didn’t do it then, as he didn’t feel it was the right moment or time for the same.

India bowled first, and with rain forcing the game to get finished on the reserve day, they tumbled under pressure and failed to cross the line eventually. Chasing 240, India got reduced to 92 for six at one stage, with MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease.

The pair stitched 116 runs for the seventh wicket before Trent Boult removed Jadeja to put India’s back against the wall. Dhoni, with his Midas touch, tried his best, but couldn’t do the job, as India got all out on 221.

"It gets difficult to control your emotions when you have lost a close game. And inside, I had made my entire plan. To me, that was the last day I played cricket for India. I took retirement a year later, but the fact is that that day I had retired," MS Dhoni said in Bengaluru.

<h2>Retirement an emotional call – Dhoni</h2>

For someone who remains as cool on the field as MS Dhoni, losing the semis clash to New Zealand brought tears to his eyes. Dhoni admitted the emotional baggage of that loss was too much to take, and he decided to step aside.

"You are high on emotions. The only thing you've done in the last 12-15 years is play cricket. And then there is no more chance of you representing the country. There are so many people, but only a few get that opportunity. Sportspersons have that. Irrespective of which sport you play, you are representing your country," the former India captain added.

MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings to its joint-most fifth IPL title this season, beating Gujarat Titans in the finals. Although there is no confirmation whether Dhoni will play next year, the indications suggest the veteran keeper-batter will again grace the field with his presence in IPL 2024.

MS Dhoni reveals how and when he decided to retire from international cricket

India's men's cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to miss the upcoming two World Cup league matches after suffering an ankle injury in the Bangladesh game, according to a report in The Indian Express. Pandya will only be available for the last two games against South Africa and the Netherlands as the team management does not want to rush him into the playing XI.&nbsp;

The report stated that Pandya had not started to bowl after the injury and the match against England on the weekend would be too early for him to return to action. The medical team is expected to wait a few more days as Pandya continues his recovery at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

Notably, it was during the ninth over of the Bangladesh innings in Pune that Pandya suffered the injury. On the third ball of the over, Pandya attempted to stop a powerful shot by the Bangladeshi batter but slipped in his follow-through and landed awkwardly on his ankle, twisting it in the process. After the team physio examined the injury, it was decided as a precautionary move to take Pandya off the field.&nbsp;

India's men's cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to miss the upcoming two World Cup league matches after suffering an ankle injury in the Bangladesh game, according to a report in The Indian Express.

India's men's cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to miss the upcoming two World Cup league matches after suffering an ankle injury in the Bangladesh game, according to a report in The Indian Express. Pandya will only be available for the last two games against South Africa and the Netherlands as the team management does not want to rush him into the playing XI. The report stated that Pandya had not started to bowl after the injury and the match against England on the weekend would be too early for him to return to action. The medical team is expected to wait a few more days as Pandya continues his recovery at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. World Cup 2023: Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya likely to miss games against England, Sri Lanka

Mohammed Shami grabbed the limelight with his five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Sunday. But, he was benched for four straight games in this World Cup as team management decided against playing four front-line bowlers. However, following an injury to Hardik Pandya, Shami got roped in. Courtesy of his second CWC five-for, India defeated the Kiwis in this tournament for the first time since 2003.

Considering India opted for a different template of playing an all-rounder at number eight instead of their usual seven-four combination, Shami’s exclusion from the playing XI from day one raised quite a few eyebrows. Although India kept winning with the new formation, many pundits asked for Shami’s inclusion, given his incredible World Cup record.

The wish came true in the marquee clash against New Zealand, as he sealed his moment with a match-winning performance.

Speaking to the media after India’s fifth straight win in World Cup 2023, Shami opened up on being benched for four games, saying the team must come first. He added if, with him sitting out, India is finding the right balance that helps them beat their opposition, then he is okay with it.

"When you come back after a long time to the XI, it is important to get confidence early. That first game helped me get that confidence. It's not too hard (waiting by the sidelines) if your team is doing well. They are your teammates, and if they are doing well then you should be supporting them. If it's in the team's interest, I'm okay with it," Shami said after the match.

<h2>Shami acknowledges Dharamsala's milestone</h2>

With Shami becoming the first-ever bowler from the country to pick two five-wicket hauls in World Cups (previously picking one against England during the 2019 edition), the India veteran acknowledged the milestone.

"The wickets are important because we were the top 2 teams of the World Cup," Shami added.

Meanwhile, after dismissing New Zealand on 273, India chased down the target with four wickets in hand.&nbsp;

Legendary Virat Kohli was the architect of the chase for the nth time, coming close to equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI hundreds record, but got out five shy of the three-digit mark. His 95 off 104 balls had kept India in the run-chase, while others also chipped in with crucial 30s and 40s.&nbsp;

With one foot inside the semis, India’s next challenge is against the defending champions England, on Sunday (Oct 29) in Lucknow.

World Cup - If it’s in team’s interest, I am okay: Dharamsala star Shami on being benched for four games

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has asked Babar Azam to be more aggressive with the bat as Pakistan seek a turnaround in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup in India. At present, Pakistan are outside the top four, at the fifth spot, with two wins and equal number of defeats. Ahead of their ongoing clash versus Afghanistan, Gambhir schooled Babar to lead the charge for Pakistan with some aggressive batting.&nbsp;

Talking on Star Sports, Gambhir said, "Babar Azam is under pressure, the entire team is under pressure. Babar has to deliver, because he has the reputation, he has class, he has ability. I picked Babar Azam in the top 5, I backed him to score 3-4 centuries on the pitches in India. Babar has the ability to do it even now."

<h2>'The way he played against India, it&nbsp;put more pressure on other batters'</h2>

Gambhir further opined, "He has to score runs and make his team win because if he scored 50 off 60 or 70 balls or scored 80 off 120 balls, there is no use. The way he played against India, it gave me an impression that he put more pressure on the rest of the batting unit and he did not release the pressure." He added, "If you want the team to play aggressive cricket, you have to lead from the front. Babar has to play freely, he has to play out-of-the-box cricket, and even out-of-the-box captaincy if Pakistan is to make the semi-final."

So far, Babar has had a mixed run in the ODI World Cup. He has two fifties in five outings, including the 74 versus Afghanistan, but has often been criticised for his strike rate. He is striking at&nbsp;79.69 in the current ten-team tournament with two half-centuries under his belt. It will be interesting to see if he tweaks his batting method and bats more aggressively in the upcoming games.

At present, Pakistan is defending a challenging 282/7 versus Afghanistan in match 22 of the ODI World Cup in Chennai on Monday (Oct 23).&nbsp;

If he scored 50 off 60 balls, there is no use: Gambhir SLAMS Babar Azam's batting approach in ODI WC

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that pacer Mohammed Shami should have been a part of the playing XI from the beginning of the ODI World Cup.&nbsp;Shami was the pick of bowlers when India squared up against New Zealand in the top-of-the-table clash against New Zealand on Sunday (Oct 22).

The speedster picked up an impressive five-fer on his World Cup comeback and staked a claim for a permanent spot in the lineup.&nbsp;

“Shami has a different class. The Indian team management need to have a lot of might to keep him out. No doubt India have won four consecutive matches but despite that, Mohammed Shami should have been a part of this playing XI from the start,” Gambhir told host broadcaster Star Sports.&nbsp;

Despite his flawless performance, Gambhir said that Shami might have to sit out the next game when Hardik Pandya gets fit.&nbsp;

“India went with five bowlers on a Dharamsala ground, which is quite difficult for the bowlers, and despite that, if you give your team five wickets, you can understand the level of bowler he is. It needs to be seen how the team management will make him sit out going forward. Will you persist with him once Hardik Pandya comes back?,” Gambhir added.

World Cup 2023: Gautam Gambhir says this pacer should've been part of India playing XI from start

India continued their unbeaten run in the World Cup by defeating New Zealand&nbsp;in Sunday's (Oct 22) top-of-the-table clash. Chasing a challenging total of 274, India won the contest by four wickets, with Virat Kohli (95) once again anchoring a tricky chase which seemingly helped avenge the agonising loss suffered in the semifinal match on the same stage, four years ago.&nbsp;

Kohli dug in and followed his brilliant hundred against Bangladesh in the previous match by smashing another&nbsp;match-winning knock. The former Indian captain, however, missed out on what would have been his 49th ODI century&nbsp;by a whisker. He was adequately assisted by Ravindra Jadeja (39*) at the back end of the chase as the southpaw reminded his critics that he was still a handful with the bat in the 50-over format.&nbsp;

India were off the blocks in a brisk manner as Rohit Sharma pulverised the NZ&nbsp;bowlers in the first powerplay. The Indian skipper was particularly severe on Matt Henry and raced to 46 in 39 balls before Ferguson stormed in and got him to chop one back to the stumps.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill followed the suit in next over as he thumped the ball straight down the throat of Daryl Mitchell. Shreyas Iyer, in at no.4, once again could not capitalise on a start and compulsively pulled a nothing delivery straight to deep midwicket.&nbsp;

With the chase delicately balanced, India needed World Cup debutant Suryakumar Yadav to hold one end but a breakdown in communication between him and Kohli meant that the Mumbai batter had to depart cheaply.&nbsp;

New Zealand momentarily threatened to take away the game but the experience of Kohli-Jadeja ensured that India reached the victorious end without any other hiccup.&nbsp;

<h2>New Zealand posted a challenging total</h2>

Put into bat first on a sluggish pitch, New Zealand had a wobbly start as Devon Conway departed without troubling the scorers while Will Young was castled by a returning Mohammed Shami. From 19/2 inside the first 10 overs, New Zealand did well to reach 178/3 as Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell joined forces to take the attack back to the Indians.&nbsp;

While Mitchell slammed his fifth ODI century, Ravindra compiled a well-crafted half-century but not before both were given reprieves by the Indian fielders. The men-in-blue had a sorry day in the field as they dropped three catches and indulged in some loose overthrows.&nbsp;

Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja - India's linchpins in the middle overs were taken for plenty by the NZ batters who had a clear game plan. Mitchell took on Yadav from his first over and forced the wrist spinner to think of a different game plan.&nbsp;

When it looked like 2019 WC finalists would pull along to a 300+ total, Shami helped India stage a comeback in the final 10 overs as he returned figures of&nbsp;5-54 in his first appearance at the tournament.

Shami was on a hat-trick averted by Lockie Ferguson but he finally ended Mitchell's marathon knock on the penultimate ball of the innings for his second five-wicket haul in World Cups. New Zealand lost their final wicket on the last ball of the 50th over with Ferguson run out.

With the win, India have knocked New Zealand off the top of the points table and have put one foot in the semifinals. Meanwhile, New Zealand slip to the second spot but still remain firmly in contention of joining India in the knockouts.&nbsp;

'His contribution will be remembered forever': Cricket fraternity mourns death of legend Bishan Singh Bedi

IN PICS – Remembering legendary former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi

Indian cricketing legend Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday (Oct 23), aged 77 after prolonged illness. The former Indian captain was regarded as one of the greatest spinners to have ever graced the game.&nbsp;

Bedi, along with BS Chandrasekhar,&nbsp;S. Venkataraghavan and&nbsp;Erapalli Prasanna was considered as the most lethal spin quartet, that&nbsp;ignited a revolution in India's spin bowling.

They&nbsp;had such an impact&nbsp;that the art of spin bowling was transformed worldwide.&nbsp;

Bedi was an orthodox left-arm spinner who represented India in 67 Tests between 1967 and 1979, picking up 266 wickets at an enviable average of 28.71&nbsp;whilst also earning 10 caps in One Day Internationals (ODIs).&nbsp;

His bowling action was described by his peers as the most textbook one out there. Countless later cricketers after Bedi have described the influence the left-arm spinner had on their bowling.&nbsp;

He was appointed the Indian captain in 1976, succeeding the great Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi with his first test victory against the mighty West Indies coming at Port-of-Spain in the third Test of the 1976 series.&nbsp;

Away from the cricketing field, Bedi worked behind the scenes to produce the next crop of Indian cricketers and had a huge influence on the domestic circuit. Additionally, Bedi, with his larger-than-life personality, did not mince any words when it came to presenting his blunt opinions. He was conferred the Padma Shri award in 1970 and&nbsp;CK Nayadu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
